Are Your Gutters Blocked & Overflowing? Get your Fascia, Soffits & Gutters cleaned, inspected & maintained ready for the winter. The benefits of having UPVC fascias and Gutters installed is that, when maintained, they can provide years and years of service and can always be brought back to a like-new condition. Over time dirt, mould and mildew can build up on the exterior of your property which, in turn, can make UPVC look discoloured and unpleasant, this not only looks unsightly, but can also cause damage if not kept clean. Gutters can easily become blocked by leaves, feathers, dirt and debris blown into them. Once a gutter becomes blocked, rainwater will flow directly off the roof onto the walls and windows of your home, as well as onto access paths. Seriously neglected gutters often have
weeds growing in them, adding to the problem. Water constantly overflowing from blocked gutters damages bricks and mortar and can cause extensive damp on the outside and mould on the inside of your house as it is absorbed by the bricks, making even the most beautiful of homes appear unsightly. J & S Homeworks can bring your UPVC back to its original condition again. Our Fascia and Soffit Cleaning service really can make a difference to the look and feel of your properties exterior and help to keep it in good condition. The cleaning products we use are specifically designed to effectively and thoroughly clean exterior surfaces. Call Jason of J & S Homeworks on 01953 458087 or 07747 847606 for a free no obligation quote.

How To Be A Social Entrepreneur
December: what can we do this month after such changeable weather...
I’ve lived in Norfolk for more than 30 years...
First it was warm for November then we had lots of wind and rain with a bit of frost in-between, but even with all that what a wonderful autumn we are having, the leaves on the trees have been so beautiful.
Early on, I was an active Young Farmer. Then later, a school parent Governor. I’ve also been a Trustee of several local charities and am currently a Trustee of Norfolk Community Foundation. I guess you’d say I’m someone who gets involved.
Everything that is prone to get spoilt in the frost should by now be put in the green house or some-where, where they will go to sleep for the winter. A lot of my stuff had to wait as I still had a lot of tomatoes growing but they have now been cleared for my potted plants... I have started to go through the catalogues for next year, as I need to be getting things ordered and ready to plant when the time comes. I hope you have all of the produce you have grown stored for you to eat in the winter months. As usual my freezers are bursting and I still have winter veg in the ground. Now the parsnips and leeks have had a frost on them they will be
really sweet to eat with your roast on a Sunday. Please don’t forget our feathered friends as the weather gets colder we need to put some food out for them, some fat balls will help to keep the cold from them. Well, that’s all for this month. Have a very Happy Christmas and a really peaceful New Year, and I hope to speak to you all next year. Yvonne. yvonnerout@hotmail.co.uk
For most of those years I’ve worked locally too. Right now I describe myself as a social entrepreneur, starting things, connecting things and striving to make the world a better place. It’s good for me too, as I’m paid to write, speak or advise groups and organisations trying to become more enterprising, without sacrificing social, ethical and environmental ideals. I work nationally too, but local projects are by far the most rewarding. Helping people achieve for their community things they thought impossible is great fun. We usually start with a problem, often financial and then find a creative solution. It’s much more than fundraising because by helping people become more entrepreneurial, future funding becomes less of a
challenge. One thing I know from experience is that ‘Big Society’ is something people here have been doing quite nicely for generations. The new big idea of localism, community ownership of public assets and community delivery of public services suits Norfolk well. I’ve met countless people doing just that and now countless more face new opportunities to do the same. But not every community can find the money to pay someone like me to help. That’s why I wrote ‘How to be a Social Entrepreneur.’ It’s an easy to follow, step by step guide to making a difference by becoming more entrepreneurial. Now people can find out how to do this stuff themselves, from a book costing £14.99. What’s more I live in South Norfolk, so when the book prompts you to ask the author question, you don’t have to go far to find me!

CHRISTMAS Health, beauty & wellbeing Avoid Christmas Weight Gain The results are in. The average Briton gains one to two pounds during the festive season. That’s not so bad, right? Wrong! The problem isn’t just that the average Briton gains a couple of pounds, according to a study conducted by the US National Institute of Child Health and Human Services (NICHD) and the US National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), the real problem is that this weight is never lost. We gain weight each festive season, maintain that weight throughout the year, and then put on more pounds the next festive season. Gain two pounds every winter, and that equals 20 pounds in ten years. How do we stop the cycle? The first step is to be realistic. It’s not likely that you will lose a large amount of weight over Christmas. So, making drastic calorie cuts is probably not a viable solution. Instead, set a personal goal of maintaining your current weight through the end of the year. Make it your personal mission not to gain excess pounds.
Of course, avoiding festive weight gain is often easier said than done, right? That’s why Jazzercise offers five simple questions to ask yourself this Christmas to keep weight gain at bay. 1. What is my plan? Before Christmas even begins, create a plan. Mark your calendar with pre-set appointments for your exercise sessions. Decide on your menus ahead of time, and head to the fresh produce section of your supermarket to stock-up on fruits and leafy greens. 2. How can I get my co-workers to help out? Office settings can be a catastrophe for nutritional eating. So, talk to your colleagues ahead of time. Ask everyone to agree that fattening desserts and sugary treats will be kept in one section of the office only. That way, you can easily
avoid the route of temptation. 3. Why am I attending this party? When you think about it, you generally don’t attend a party strictly for the food. You’re there to spend time with your friends and family. So, do exactly that! Focus on socialising. There’s no reason to make three trips to the buffet when you’re engrossed in calorie-free conversation. 4. Am I getting my five-a-day? Eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day. The fibre in these low-calorie foods will give your stomach a full sensation, so you’re less likely to chow-down on cakes, sweets, or crisps. 5. What are my favourite indulgences? It’s okay to have a tasty treat now and then. If you deprive yourself of everything,
you’re more likely to binge in a moment of weakness. So, pick your favourites, and allow yourself those indulgences this Christmas. Don’t waste calories on a bag of crisps when what you’re really craving is homemade Christmas cake. Jazzercise, created by Judi Sheppard Missett, is the world’s leading dance-fitness program with more than 7,800 instructors teaching 32,000 classes weekly in the world. Since 1969, millions of people of all ages and fitness levels have reaped the benefits of this comprehensive program, designed to enhance cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility. The aim of the Fair was to provide a one stop information shop to help older people understand what is available to them, stay fit, safe and independent for longer. Over 20 organisations such as St John’s Ambulance, Age Concern and Walking for Health had stands at the Fair held at East Harling Old School Hall. All were keen to speak directly with older people and let them know what help and support is available to them. Lynda Turner, Breckland Council Executive Support Member for Communities and Benefits said that the event had proved valuable: “For a very small outlay, the benefits of such an event are really worthwhile. An interview with...
Sarah Godbold of Manorcourt Homecare 2. What do you enjoy most about your work? I feel a great deal of satisfaction working as a carer because I know that I have made a difference to so many people. I help people live their every day lives, I enable them to live as independently as possible in their own homes, where they are comfortable and surrounded by their possessions and family.
Above: Sarah Godbold of Manorcourt Homecare 1. How did you get into caring for the elderly? I have been working in the care sector for the past 2 years; I was looking for a career change and chose care work because I had been looking after my Father for a while.
I think it’s a great job! I get to travel around, visiting different people and doing different things, I may be needed to assist someone with bathing , the next person may just need some help with medication, someone else may need some help with a meal so it really does vary. 3. What are the most challenging aspects of caring for the elderly? To be a good carer I believe you have to enjoy the job, enjoy being with people and have a caring outlook. You need to
be able to make the people you care for feel that they are not a nuisance and build their trust in you. You need to be able to cheer them up if they are having a bad day or maybe just something simple like listening to them! I want to care for people the way I would want to be cared for if I ever need help in the future. It would be good for the younger generation, the carers of the future, to see that it’s not just about looking after older people; we see lots of different people with different care needs of all ages. The care apprentices scheme that has started recently I hope will go a long way to raise the profile of social care work to younger people. 4. Would you recommend caring as a career? It’s a proper career choice nowadays; there are so many different career paths that can be taken within the field of social care. The training is very
thorough and has to meet the national standard and the range of training subjects is vast and covers every aspect of social care. The company I work for offers paid training and free NVQ’s and real career progression into the management team. The work is hard, the hours can be long but the overall satisfaction I get from my job more than makes up for it and I really sleep well at night!
