Residents With Long-Term Health Conditions To Benefit From Free Online Courses Launching In Norfolk Expert Patients Programme Community Interest Company (EPP CIC) commissioned by NHS Norfolk are delivering free online courses for people who live with a long-term health condition or chronic illness to help them manage their condition more effectively. said: “Living with a long-term health condition can cause depression, pain and low confidence – it can also affect relationships with friends and family – but this needn’t be the case. “The EPP online course is designed to improve quality of life, reduce feelings of isolation and depression, improve eating habits, improve relationships, reduce visits to health care professionals and help people learn to self-manage their illness.” With the cold weather set to remain, residents across Norfolk with long-term conditions – many of which can be exacerbated in cold weather - are being urged to resist the temptation to forget about their health over the festive period and act now to ensure they start their new year off on the right track. Derek Clarke, Norfolk Contract Manager at the Expert Patients Programme,

Dispatch February 2011

The free, internet-based course, which is running for the first time in Norfolk, runs with up to 20 people at a time, who log on 2-3 times a week for a total of two hours. The course runs for six weeks with an extra two weeks of time at the end to allow people time to revisit or update their sessions or use the many tools the course gives them access to. People accessing the course don’t need

to be online at the same time; they can log on at anytime, anywhere, during the course. Each week, they enter the online learning centre, which covers topics which will help them make plans and look at ways to solve problems they may have in relation to their long-term condition. Two trained online course tutors can offer support and advice and respond to posts that appear each week in the discussion area. Michaela Trett, Contract Manager - Third Sector at NHS Norfolk, said: “Supporting residents with long-term conditions and enabling people to take greater control of their own health is a priority for us, which is why we are so keen that local residents take up this opportunity. “At NHS Norfolk we’re offering the online course in order to give as many people as possible the opportunity to take part

in the Expert Patients Programme. With it being accessible online, not only is it flexible for those people who are out at work during the day to take part at a time convenient to them, it is also particularly useful for those people who are less mobile or have severe pain as they can take part in the comfort of their own home and still benefit from the tools and techniques that are on offer.” People living with long-term health conditions who feel they would benefit from taking part in online courses should call Freephone 0800 783 8944, email info@eppcic.co.uk or visit www.expertpatients.co.uk. Bookings are now being taken for courses starting in February 2011 and are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Welcome to...

Thetford Youth Council Kicks Off 2011 With A Bang Breckland Council received some fantastic news over the Christmas period in being shortlisted for yet another award, but this time it is the Youth Council that is being recognised. The Youth Council is delighted to have been shortlisted for a ‘Community Support’ Award in the Bernard Matthews Youth Awards 2011 which will be announced towards the end of February.

peers’ achievements, and a ‘Participatory Budget’ round where the Youth Councillors decided on grants to be given to youth projects in the district.

Made up of nine teenagers ranging from 15 – 19 years old Breckland Youth Council meets once a month to discuss issues and concerns of their fellow teenagers in the Breckland area and works towards improving the image, status and welfare of young people.

Furthermore they juggle their own study time to attend other schools to advise on other youth councils and have also organised a ‘Question Time’ and ‘Youth Select Committee Day’ which gave Youth Councillors and their peers an opportunity to question senior figures in local organisations regarding the local area and issues that affect them.

In addition to giving up their time for meetings, members of the Youth Council actively engage and organise events such as the ‘Pride in Breckland Youth Awards’ where they recognised their

Youth Councillors have recently undertaken a training day which was funded from ‘Take Part’ funding and delivered by the British Youth Council. This provided a great deal of inspiration

for the Youth Council and in turn has motivated them to start their first campaign. The ‘YESS’ (Young People Engaging to Stop Stereotypes) Campaign focuses on social stereotypes and breaking down barriers between the generations of youth and senior citizens.

The YESS campaign is also a very worthwhile project and on behalf of Breckland Council I would like to wish them every success for the awards and for the YESS campaign in 2011.”

This will cover a variety of areas such as Anti-Social Behaviour, Youth Activities and Social Inclusion. It is anticipated that this will change people’s attitudes and in turn will bring communities together. Diana Irving; Breckland Council’s Young People’s Champion said: “This is excellent news, our youth council members have worked very hard since

Lady Kay Fisher, Breckland Council Executive Member for Environmental Wellbeing and Communications said: “I know that there are lots of residents out there who are doing their bit to help the environment. This is an opportunity for one green family to lead by example and use their experience to inspire others - and win some fantastic prizes too!”

Ensuring Rover’s Return Breckland Council has announced that free micro-chipping vouchers are on offer for the first 100 residents to apply who are in receipt of benefits. It is hoped that this new initiative will help reunite lost dogs with their owners and help tackle a problem which incurs a substantial cost to council tax payers. Acting on complaints from the public, Breckland Council’s dog warden service seizes and kennels around 100 stray and lost dogs every year. Sadly, in only half of these cases is the Council able to reunite dogs with their owners; the remainder are re-homed and some may have to be put down if a suitable place cannot be found. Paul Claussen Breckland Council Executive Member for Planning, Health and Housing explained how the scheme will help tackle this problem: “Breckland is promoting responsible dog ownership and we hope this initiative will encourage more people to get their dogs micro chipped. Once micro chipped with its own unique identification number registered on the national database, a dog can easily be scanned so that concerned

owners can be traced quickly and their pet returned safe and sound”. Free vouchers are limited to one per household, and a low-cost service at only £10 including VAT (subject to resources) is available to those who do not qualify for the free micro chipping. People can apply immediately and the micro chipping will take place during February. For more information about the free voucher scheme, or low cost micro chipping call Breckland’s Dog Warden Service on 01362 656870 or email envprotect@breckland.gov.uk.

Smiths Row We are happy to welcome Australian artists Tanya Schultz and Nicole Andrijevic to Smiths Row, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds in what is their first major British show. Schultz and Andrijevic have worked in collaboration since 2007 using the alias Pip & Pop and this is an exciting opportunity to see them in action. Sweet, sweet galaxy is a unique sculptural installation depicting a miniature psychedelic landscape. An amalgamation of numerous materials including coloured sugar, fine sand, cake decorations, origami, found objects and sound, this colourful sensory kingdom is being constructed directly in the gallery space in early January. The sugar used in this exhibition has been kindly donated by Silver Spoon. As the sole producers of home grown British sugar the company supports 1200 East Anglian Beet farmers. According to Dan Gough of Silver Spoon: “the granulated sugar used in this exhibition was grown an average of only 30 miles from this gallery”. Pip & Pop are influenced by a plethora of concepts and ideas and their work often looks to cultures that are beyond

their own, seeing that the utopian or paradisiacal often lies out of reach or in the other. The artists draw from a vast array of cultural inspirations such as Buddhist theories of enlightenment, Japanese video game design and German folk tales. Throughout cultural history there is a long tradition of depicting journeys through, and in search of utopian and fictitious/inventive worlds. Pip & Pop draw on the rich history of imaginary worlds, through mythology, creation stories, children’s literature, cinema and ancient cosmologies. The artists also draw parallels between the illusory nature of imagined worlds and the promise and allure of material culture. The indulgent, celebratory quality of their use of materials and lucid colours evokes this. Several workshops and events accompany the exhibition throughout February. Please check the website for details: www.smithsrow.org.

Keystone Development Trust Local projects receive funding boost from Keystone Community Grant Scheme speakers and creative activities that will help us engage with more visually impaired people and provide much needed social stimulation.”

Above: Sarah Williams, Keystone Development Trust (left), presents June Hughes, local organiser of Brandon V.I.Ps with Keystone Community grant cheque. Keystone Development Trust have announced their final grant allocation for this year with a total of £5,000 awarded to 16 voluntary and community organisations working in Thetford, Brandon, Mildenhall, Newmarket and the surrounding areas. One of the newly awarded projects is Brandon VIPs, a social club for blind and visually impaired people, who have been awarded £375 to run a programme of stimulating and creative activities for their members. With this funding they plan to encourage more visually impaired people, many of whom experience feelings of intense isolation, to leave their home and improve their quality of life. June Hughes, local organiser of the Brandon VIPs, said: “The Brandon VIPs are delighted to receive this funding. It is a fantastic Christmas present and means that we will be able to offer much more within our group next year. At the moment the club can only offer a place to meet twice a month, with a cup of tea and a cake. This Keystone Community Grant means that we will be able to provide a programme of interesting

Home-Start Breckland & South Norfolk is another newly awarded project having received a grant of £340. This will pay for the production of resource packs equipping their home visiting volunteers with more materials to actively promote early years development, literacy and play to families experiencing difficulties, with children under the age of 5 living across Breckland. Other successful projects include a new initiative to support migrant workers living in Newmarket through Newmarket Muslim Cultural and Welfare Association; equipment to run emergency first aid training for St John Ambulance (Thetford), new maintenance equipment for those who use the Thetford Garden and Allotment Club, and a contribution to a community fun day being organised by Thetford Community First Responders. Neil Stott, Chief Executive of Keystone Development Trust, said: “I am really pleased that these projects, which will have a significant impact on the lives of people in the Keystone Area in the new year, have received the backing of a Keystone Community Grant. It is an important part of our work, especially in these times of economic austerity, to invest in the initiatives of local voluntary and community groups which deliver vital projects that improve people’s quality of life and benefit the wider community.”

New Year Bathroom Makeover

J & S Homeworks

Well another New Year has crept up on us and that all important home project you have been contemplating about for sometime has yet to be sorted.

Check Round Your Property For Damage. The wintry weather can cause damage to your gutters, which in turn can cause damp patches on the external walls. Felt could also be damaged and water may be getting into your loft.

Whether it’s that tired looking en-suite in need of a change or a complete newly designed and installed bathroom revamp that you have longed for over the years, Supreme Bathrooms at Wymondham is the place to visit. A local family business established since 1998 who are bigger enough to cope but smaller enough to care, means they can take care of everything under one roof. With an enormous array of bathrooms and showers on display for your perusal, experienced staff and their own car park does not take a lot to realise that Supreme is a safe bet to start the ball rolling and get something started. From the initial planning and design service through to the installation service with their own experienced bathroom fitters, means all aspects are covered from taps & tiles to suites and showers, even the final accessories can be supplied and fitted.

Dispatch February 2011

Supreme Bathrooms will carry out all plumbing and tiling work, flooring and electrical work to create that possibly once in a lifetime dream bathroom. Visit their showroom and ask for your free no obligation survey which will mean a short home visit to measure up and view all possibilties before drawing up a plan and quotation for you to view. You may also visit our website www.supremebathroomcentre.co.uk where you can view all products and pictures of bathrooms already fitted.

During this wet and windy season your gutters could be blocked & overflowing.

If you detect any of these faults, give J & S Homeworks a call. Gutters can easily become blocked by leaves, feathers, dirt and debris blown into them. Once a gutter becomes blocked, rainwater will flow directly off the roof onto the walls and windows of your home, as well as onto access paths. Seriously neglected gutters often have weeds growing in them, adding to the problem. Water constantly overflowing from blocked gutters

damages bricks and mortar and can cause extensive damp on the outside and mould on the inside of your house as it is absorbed by the bricks, making even the most beautiful of homes appear unsightly. J & S Homeworks can bring your UPVC back to its original condition again. Our Fascia and Soffit Cleaning service really can make a difference to the look and feel of your properties exterior and help to keep it in good condition. The cleaning products we use are specifically designed to effectively and thoroughly clean exterior surfaces. We offer a 3 stage payment scheme (T&Cs apply). Call Jason of J&S Homeworks on 01953 458087 or 07747 847606 for a free no obligation quote.

Health, beauty & wellbeing Ready, Set, Stretch! Running, cycling, swimming, dancing, aerobics, pumping iron, playing tennis, rowing, kickboxing, and weightlifting. These are what most of us think of when it comes to exercise. But, what about stretching? Do you see stretching as an important factor in your physical fitness? The Mayo Clinic in the US lists stretching as one of the basic components of a well-rounded fitness routine. Because cardiovascular and strength-training exercises typically cause muscles to contract and flex, it’s vital to stretch those muscles as part of a balanced fitness regimen. Stretching promotes better posture, improves the range of motion in your joints, and helps to reduce stress. Stretching increases blood circulation, maximizing the blood flow to your muscles. Regular stretching also makes it easier to perform everyday tasks, such as reaching up to grab a glass out of the cupboard or bending down to tie your shoelaces. Jazzercise choreographs stretch sequences that are used in

12 Dispatch February 2011

32,000 group fitness classes taught weekly around the world. Jazzercise offers these suggestions for safe and effective stretching. Warm Up Stretching cold muscles can lead to injury. Start with low-intensity movements for approximately five minutes before performing your stretches. Save deep stretches for the end of your exercise routine, when your muscles are warm. Focus On The Majors Target major muscle groups. Stretch your glutes, quads, hamstrings, calves, lower back, and shoulders. Pay particular attention to any muscles that you regularly use in your daily work or leisure activities.

Hold Steady When you engage in a stretch, hold a steady position and don’t bounce. Bouncing creates tears in your muscles that leave scar tissue, making you even less flexible. Use Caution Ease into your stretches slowly and take your time before going deeper. You should feel some tension with each stretch, but not excruciating pain. If your muscles are screaming for mercy, then you’ve gone too far. Breathe Many of us unconsciously hold our breath while stretching. This actually causes tension in the muscles, which is counterproductive to stretching. Focus

on breathing slowly and deeply, allowing the blood flow and the oxygen to seep into your muscles. Jazzercise, created by Judi Sheppard Missett, is the world’s leading dance-fitness program with more than 7,800 instructors teaching 32,000 classes weekly around the globe. Since 1969, millions of people of all ages and fitness levels have reaped the benefits of this comprehensive program, designed to enhance cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility. VW Group Specialist Combines With Italian Car Specialist Chequered Flag has been established since 1976 and is based in Attleborough, South Norfolk. We are a family run business with a strong local connection in the area. The managing director Felix Desira and the sales and service team are always on hand to deal with any enquiries in a professional but friendly manner. You can browse our approved used, request a test drive and even make a service or MOT booking. The Chequered Flag have been associated with Skoda for 28 years and have expanded to become a VW group specialist, we buy, sell, service, MOT and repair any vehicle from Skoda, Seat, VW and Audi. At Chequered Flag we believe that buying or selling a car should be a pleasure and hassle free. Even if it’s a cheap car or one that costs plenty, we’ll use our vehicle history checks to reduce the risk of nasty surprises before you even view the vehicle. The service and parts department has fully trained and qualified staffs who are VW group accredited so you know that the standard of work is of the highest

quality. The Chequered Flag are looking at expanding the workshops and putting in two class 7 ramps one of which will be an MOT ramp. Last month they combined their efforts with Felix’s Brother, Joe Desira and launched the South Norfolk’s Italian Car Specialist. Joe has been a car enthusiast since the age of 3, when he was allowed to hold the leadlight for his brother’s garage underneath the arches in London. Joe’s background has always been in Italian Cars, namely Fiats & Alfa Romeos where coincidently he served his apprenticeship with Norman’s of Westminster in Vauxhall, which was a Citroen and Fiat dealership. He then specialised with Fiat. This experience has stood him in good stead as he now has an in depth knowledge and training in the mechanical side of things, he then left Fiat and came to Norfolk to work with his brothers, John and Sam.

He started out in the workshop and moved to Service Reception after 4 years. Joe was known for his ‘chatty’ disposition and couldn’t help but talk to the customers about the new vehicles in the showroom, often persuading them to have a new car rather than get their car serviced! ‘Time to change’ - and very often they did. His brothers’ noticed his natural salesmanship and promptly moved him into the showroom. This has been his natural arena ever since. He was at the Diss branch for 2 years, Great Yarmouth for 7 years and finally Bury St Edmunds for the past 14 years. Even in his spare time he takes his 1982 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV 2.0 to rallies with the Alfa Romeo Owners Club (much to his wife’s annoyance!). Joe had always had ambitions of setting up on his own so when his brother Felix offered him a space next to his own garage The Chequered Flag, Attleborough, he jumped at the chance.

Offering nearly new and used Fiats & Alfa Romeos, with the backup of all the servicing, Mot’s and valeting from next door. The above opening launches the new independent business, Joe Desira Car Sales, as East Anglia’s ‘ITALIAN CAR SPECIALIST’. The launch weekend was a great success over Saturday and Sunday with over 100 people in attendance, there was food and drinks as well as special deals on all used cars that were on offer, they also offered free car washes all day and MOT’s at £35 for both days. If you would like any further information for car sales, servicing, MOT’s Valeting on all of the VW group or Fiat and Alfa Romeos please contact us on info@cf-cars.co.uk / info@joedesira.co.uk or telephone 01953 452588. All in all very exciting times ahead for Felix and Joe Desira.
