Above: Paul’s picture - taken at Gooderstone Water Gardens Photography is something of a passion for Paul and the Breckland competition is an annual fixture on his calendar. He said: “I always look forward to a new challenge for the Breckland competition each year. This photo was taken in the morning

when the sun had just broken through. I photograph at Gooderstone Water Gardens quite often. I even dashed up there one Sunday last December after a heavy snowfall – needless to say I was the only person there!”

The Big Heart Bike Ride Nadine gets on her bike to fight heart disease Nadine Easter, 29, from Thetford is following her heart by taking part in a tough cycle ride through the East African country of Tanzania to raise funds to fight heart disease. Nadine, a local accounts assistant, is joining the fourth Big Heart Bike Ride – a unique cycling challenge to raise funds to help fight heart disease through the work of four UK charities. Men and women of all ages who are prepared to raise sponsorship, train and get fit are invited to take part. Nadine is doing the ride because heart disease runs in her family and she wanted to get fit and healthy so she wouldn’t be affected by it, and to raise money to help others along the way. Funds raised by the challenging 400m ride through Tanzania will be divided equally between The British Heart Foundation, CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young), Tiny Tickers and H.E.A.R.T UK. The charities’ work ranges from detecting heart problems in babies before they are born and supporting families coping with cardiac disease in young people through funding preventative work, providing specialist

facilities and equipment and funding life-saving research into the causes and treatment of heart disease. The Big Heart Bike Ride in Africa takes place from 18-26 June 2011 and will be an amazing five-day adventure. Starting in the port city of Dar es Salaam the route will take participants through nature reserves, wonderful countryside and local villages to the foot of the Ngura mountain range. Averaging 75 kilometres each day and dealing with dirt tracks and off road cycling conditions everyone will earn their sponsorship donations! This is a challenging ride and Nadine is already training hard to ensure she is fit enough to complete the cycle ride and to raise a minimum of £3,200 in sponsorship for the charities. To pledge your support for Nadine either send your donation, made payable to The Big Heart Bike Ride to Glazing Vision Ltd, 36 Wimbledon Avenue, Brandon, Suffolk, IP27 0NZ, or you can donate online at: www.justgiving.com/nadine-easter0

Discover Hair Celebrates Another Successful Girls Night Out In Aid Of St. Nicholas Hospice Wow, what a magnificent turn out, over 530 women dressed in pyjamas and flashing bunny ears turned out on a very cold Saturday night to walk the 11.2 miles around Bury St Edmunds to raise money for St. Nicholas Hospice. It was great to see all the bags and hair products donated by Matrix and Discover Hair being given out to all the well deserving women as they came over the finishing line. Working in a busy salon all year long it Above: Left to Right Kelly Brinkley and Julie Elder It was an honour and a privilege to walk alongside these women all doing this for their own special reason. The walk takes you past the hospice, which is an inspiration in itself. Last year I did the walk with my friend Kelly Brinkley who recently lost her husband to cancer. This year we beat our old time by 20 minutes and came in to finish in 2 hours and 45 minutes. I think the thought of the bacon roll and hot chocolate at the finishing line helped us towards the end.

is an inspirational evening that helps me understand what drives the people who make the hospice and all the fundraising done possible. I would like to thank them once again for all their hard work and dedication.

Community Impact Day, Thetford Officers from Norfolk Constabulary’s Road Policing team spoke to over 30 drivers in an enforcement day they conducted recently in Thetford. On Friday 10th September, officers were enforcing the 7.5 tonne weight restriction in Bury Road in the town and, working in partnership with colleagues from VOSA, also looked at all commercial vehicle issues. In the six hours of enforcement they issued nine Fixed Penalty Notices for the breach of the limit with a petrol tanker

even doing a three point turn to avoid a ticket. There were also three vehicle defects on commercial vehicles and a further eight were stopped to check on vehicle weights and driver hours. Two of the vehicles were sent to VOSA officers who gave immediate prohibitions for dangerous condition. A number of car drivers were

also spoken to and offences dealt with included seatbelt issues and illegal number plates. In total 36 drivers were contacted over the time period and officers not only underlined the weight restrictions in force on that road but also offered road safety advice to other drivers and public reassurance to local residents.

Breckland Winter Arts Festival Seeks Local Champions A new Winter Arts Festival will see live theatre, comedy, music, film and spoken word performances staged in village pubs, halls and libraries throughout Breckland. Now organisers have put a call out for volunteers to help organise and champion the various events and help ensure the Festival brightens up the dark winter months. Breckland Council, who are organising, funding and promoting the Breckland Winter Arts Festival in partnership with Creative Arts East, are calling on local groups and organisations to come forward and act as Festival Champions. As Champions, they would be responsible for finding a suitable venue in their village, promoting the event and selling tickets. Champions can choose their event from a menu of high quality productions provided through Creative Arts East, and would be given training and guidance on topics such as promotion, pricing and health and safety. Adrian Stasiak,

Breckland Council Executive Member for Communities and Benefits said: “We have already had two knock-out successes with the Breckland Film Festival and our recent Theatre Festival. It was evident at both Festivals that performances staged in local spaces such as village halls really bring communities together and we are keen to build on this. There will be a wide range of productions on offer, so Champions will be able to choose a performance that will suit their local community and ensure a good turnout”. The Festival will run throughout January and February 2011. For more information about the project, or to find out how to become a Festival Champion, contact Breckland Council Arts Officer Sam Dawson on 01362 656870.

J&S Homeworks Get your Fascia, Soffits & Gutters cleaned, inspected & maintained ready for the winter. gutters often have weeds growing in them, adding to the problem. Water constantly overflowing from blocked gutters damages bricks and mortar and can cause extensive damp on the outside and mould on the inside of your house as it is absorbed by the bricks, making even the most beautiful of homes appear unsightly. The benefits of having UPVC fascias and Gutters installed, is that when maintained, they can provide years and years of service and can always be brought back to a like-new condition. Over time dirt, mould and mildew can build up on the exterior of your property which, in turn, can make UPVC look discoloured and unpleasant, this not only looks unsightly, but can also cause damage if not kept clean. Gutters can easily become blocked by leaves, feathers, dirt and debris blown into them. Christmas Is Coming! Twinkling Star Cupcakes Prep time: 1 hr 0 min, plus 2 hrs drying. Cook time: 20 min. Serves: 12. Ingredients For the decorations • 250g ready-to-roll white icing • Claret and mint green edible paste food colouring • small silver coloured dragees • edible glitter, such as Disco white hologram by Edable Art For the cupcakes • 115g softened butter, cubed • 115g golden caster sugar • 2 large eggs • 125g self-raising flour • 25g ground almonds • ½ tsp almond extract For the icing • 250g fondant icing sugar • Claret and mint green edible paste food colouring

10 Dispatch November 2010

Method 1. For the decorations: slice off a quarter of the ready-to-roll icing (wrap the rest to prevent it drying out) then colour one half of it pastel pink and one half pastel green. Wrap both colours in cling film. 2. On a work surface lightly sprinkled with icing sugar, roll out the reserved white icing. Cut out 12 white stars using an 8cm diameter star cutter. (You will need to reroll the trimmings.) Place a 3.5-4cm star cutter in the centre of one star and cut out a smaller star, so you have a large cut-out star and a smaller star. Repeat to give 12 cut-out and 12 smaller white stars. Keep re-rolling the trimmings to give you enough white stars. 3. Press a few silver dragees into the smallest white stars and lay all the stars

on a large board lined with baking parchment. 4. Using a 5-5.5cm star cutter, roll out the pink and green icings and cut out 6 stars from each colour. Lay them by the white stars, brush each one with a little edible glitter, then leave them all to dry and firm up, about 1½-2 hrs. 5. For the cupcakes: preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line a 12-hole bun tin with silver paper cases. 6. Tip the butter, sugar, eggs, flour and baking powder into a large bowl and beat together with an electric hand mixer for 1½-2 minutes until the mixture is light and well mixed. Using a large metal spoon, lightly fold in the ground almonds and almond extract.

7. Divide the mixture between the paper cases and bake for 20 minutes until risen. Leave in the tin for a couple of minutes, then lift the cakes onto a wire rack and leave until cold. 8. For the icing: stir about 2 tablespoons of water into the fondant icing sugar to give a smooth, thickish icing. Remove half to a second bowl and colour one batch pastel pink and the other pastel green, using the edible food colourings. Spoon the icings over the cooled cakes so that the tops are almost covered and leave to set for a few minutes. 9. Arrange one large white star, one medium coloured star (using pink stars on the green iced cakes, and green stars on the pink iced ones) then one small white star on top of each cupcake, securing with a little of the fondant icing if necessary.

Health, beauty & wellbeing Safe Workouts During Pregnancy You’re pregnant. Congratulations! This is a wonderful time in your life. As you prepare and plan for a nursery, cot, car seat, and formula, there may be one plaguing question that continually crosses your mind: Is it okay to exercise while pregnant? Pregnant women are often hesitant about exercising, fearing that a fitness regimen will increase fatigue and morning sickness, or even put the baby at risk. But according to recent research, exercise can actually improve cardiovascular fitness and energy levels during pregnancy. In fact, the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends 30 minutes or more of moderate exercise on most days of the week, unless you have a highrisk pregnancy. Exercising can help to elevate mood and boost self-esteem, while decreasing fatigue and backaches. There’s even some evidence that exercising while pregnant can prevent gestational diabetes and build the stamina needed for labor and delivery.

Shanna Missett Nelson, President of Jazzercise, Inc., has exercised during both of her pregnancies. As creator of the Pregnancy and Post Pregnancy Workouts by Jazzercise, Shanna offers these suggestions for women who wish to participate in fitness activities while pregnant: • Exercise on a regular basis. Aim for three to five workouts per week. Regular, consistent workouts are more effective than intermittent ones.

• Do not exercise when you have a fever. • Avoid any exercises on your back after your first trimester. • Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout to avoid dehydration. • Modify any exercises that feel awkward or uncomfortable. • Lower your intensity level if you feel increased fatigue while exercising.

• Wear cool, comfortable clothing and a well-fitted, supportive bra.

• After performing floor exercises, get up slowly to prevent dizziness.

• Maintain good posture and alignment.

As always, consult your doctor and/or your midwife before beginning any exercise program.

Jazzercise, created by Judi Sheppard Missett, is the world’s leading dancefitness program with more than 7,800 instructors teaching 32,000 classes weekly around the globe. Since 1969, millions of people of all ages and fitness levels have reaped the benefits of this comprehensive program, designed to enhance cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility. For more information on Jazzercise go to tryjazzercise.com Or call 07971 449420

• Do not exercise in hot, humid weather.

Giveacar East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has turned old cars into thousands of pounds of much-needed funds after teaming up with not-for-profit organisation Giveacar. The scheme, in which donated cars are sold for scrap metal and the proceeds donated to charity, has raised £5,582 for EACH since they became affiliated with Giveacar in February this year. EACH cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions and offers support to their families across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk. They offer a range of care and support services including music therapy, short break care and bereavement support. To deliver their services, EACH needs to raise £4 million each year in voluntary donations.

“As a registered charity, we rely on public support and are thankful for the collaboration and support that the Giveacar scheme has provided us with.”

2. Pressures should be checked against the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended level. This can be found in the vehicle handbook and on a plate which is often located inside the fuel filler flap or on the driver’s door sill.

Giveacar has donated over £125,000 to charities across the UK since it was founded in January. The social enterprise arranges for old cars to be collected and taken to an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF), where they are dismantled according to strict environmental codes of practice. The money raised from the car’s scrap metal is then donated to a charity of the car owner’s choice.

3. Check the pressure when tyres are cold (i.e. when you have travelled less than two miles).

Lindsey Newton, EACH press and media officer, said: “The Giveacar scheme has proved to be hugely successful in turning metal to money for (EACH).
