WYMONDHAM ABBEY

Wymondham Abbey appoints new Vicar ollowing the retirement in September of Revd Canon Christopher Davies, Wymondham Abbey has announced that Catherine Relf-Pennington is to be the next vicar of Wymondham. She will be the 60th Vicar of the church, which was founded in 1107. She is also the Abbey’s first woman Vicar.

F

Catherine was born in Australia, raised in Hong Kong and attended school there and later went to university in the UK. Before becoming a priest Catherine was a research scientist in the field of Ar tificial Intelligence. “It’s a skill I’m still looking to put to use in the church!” she joked. She was appointed to the role of Associate Vicar at Wymondham Abbey in 2013. Catherine said “the role of vicar of any church is an important and demanding post. In a parish the size of Wymondham that is particularly true. The heart of the job is loving and serving the people of Wymondham and Spooner Row, whether they come to church or not. There is a great team at the Abbey and a wonderful church family. It is a great blessing and huge honour to have been appointed to this historic church and serve this community.” “We are delighted with the appointment”, said head Churchwarden Bernard Douglass. “Although Catherine has been working at the church for over three years, she had to go through a full selection process, and she was clearly an outstanding candidate. We look forward to working closely with her as we embrace the challenging times ahead.”

The Bishop of Thetford, the Right Reverend Alan Winton was par t of the selection panel. “Catherine is a first rate priest, and we were impressed with her obvious capabilities and vision for the parish,” he said. Catherine will star t her new job immediately, and will be formally ‘collated’ into the post in due course in a special ceremony at the church.

SOUND SLEEP

An interview with Andrew Bright from Sound Sleep Beds ow do you know when its time to change your bed? Many of us don’t realise that our mattress has become uncomfor table over the year s. I find the best questions to ask your self are: Do you wake up feeling un-refreshed and aching? Have you slept better in another bed recently? Do you disturb your par tner when changing sleep positions? Do you roll together?

H

If you answer ‘yes’ to one or more of these questions, then I would cer tainly think about a new mattress or bed.

fillings, latex, geltex and even the brand new Slumberland Affinity Foam. What makes you a mattress specialist? As a family, we have had over 50 years in the bed trade and spent over 20 of those as manufacturers. We have designed dozens of mattresses through the years and work closely with manufacturers to have the best quality mattresses at great prices. We are also honest; as we know all about springs and mattress filings, we will advise what is suitable for you and what benefits different mattresses will have for you. I am also an accredited Sleep Council

“ Generally, it is said you need to change your bed every 7 years. Many people question the reasoning behind this, a good quality mattress has lost approximately 70% of its suppor t after this time and also hygiene reasons.”

How often should you change your bed? Generally, it is said you need to change your bed every 7 years. Many people question the reasoning behind this, a good quality mattress has lost approximately 70% of its suppor t after this time and also hygiene reasons. Our beds are a breading ground for bacteria and dust mites, our mattress is the one thing that we spend so much time in contact with that we cannot actually wash. If you have a good solid top divan base or slats, usually you can just change the mattress. If your base is sprung, you would need to think about changing the whole bed. What is the best kind of mattress to sleep on? This is a very difficult question to answer. Mattresses are very personal. Before you buy a mattress, its best to speak to one of our Dream Team who can help guide you. Pocket sprung mattresses offer great suppor t, but we offer so many different types topped with memory foam, natural 06 | Wymondham & Dereham

Sleep Advisor, in fact I was the UK’s first qualified one! What kind of mattress do you sleep on? I have just taken delivery of my new Slumberland Serene mattress, this mattress features Affinity Foam. The Slumberland Affinity Foam is the first completely open celled foam offering maximum suppor t and breathability. As someone who is into fitness and gym training six days a week, along with a day job of lifting and carrying beds, it is essential to have the best suppor ting mattress possible to help offer great pressure relief to aching muscles. A good night’s sleep is needed to allow our bodies rest and repair. I sleep in a superking size to ensure that I get a peaceful night’s sleep with minimum disturbance from my par tner. What’s the key to a good night’s sleep? Ever yone is different, but generally the number one factor is your bed. An uncomfor table bed will always will

affect the way you sleep. Other factor s which are equally impor tant are a dar k room, a room that is not too warm and peace and quiet. The one thing that disturbs sleep more than anything is your iPhone! Those late night sounds coming from your phone or the screen lighting up the room are disruptive – even on silent, those vibrations may wake you. Turn it off, facebook and instagram will still be there in the morning! Beds are expensive, is it better to buy a second hand one? No way. Firstly, there are beds and mattresses suitable for most price ranges. Not ever yone wants to spend hundreds of pounds on a bed, obviously you do get what you pay for but second hand beds are a big no. It’s not just the bed’s ability to provide proper suppor t that declines with age; A build up of moisture (we lose a half pint or more of fluid each night) and skin scales (we lose a pound of skin or more a year) makes beds a favourite breeding ground for the common dust mite: bad news for the nation’s 2-3 million asthma sufferers; and a grim thought for those sleeping on second-hand beds and other peoples’ sweat and skin scales! Not forgetting that many beds made before 1988 don’t even meet the UK’s basic fire safety regulations. At Sound Sleep we now offer 0% interest free credit, so that helps make more luxurious beds far more affordable. Plus we have a huge range of offers on throughout April for extra savings. There is lots of publicity about unsafe beds at the moment, how do I know where to get a safe bed? Anyone buying a new bed from Sound Sleep doesn’t have to worr y about that. All our beds are National Bed Federation approved, so they are safe, clean, hygienic and all meet trading standards requirements. We have informational videos on our website in the ‘Sleep Safe’ section of our website. We work closely with the Sleep Council and The National Bed Federation promoting the new code of practice. PARTNERSHIP FUELS NEW OIL BANKS

Look out for the new bright orange cooking oil recycling banks across South Norfolk.

S

outh Norfolk Council have teamed up with Anglian Water and Living Fuels to install the new banks at five locations across the district.

South Norfolk Councillor Kay Mason-Billig, Cabinet Member for Environment and Recycling, said: “You can’t miss our bright new banks, which are bigger and easier to empty. So far we have prevented 8,200 litres of oil going down the sink. That’s 7.55 tonnes of cooking oil that hasn’t had to be cleaned out of the drains. We hope to collect and recycle even more through the new banks.” The banks, provided by Anglian Water, are regularly emptied by Living Fuels who refine and recycle the oil at their site in Thetford. It is then used to generate carbon neutral electricity. Residents can dispose of their used vegetable and cooking oil, lard, roasting fats, BBQ fats, grill fats, margarine and butter at the banks. Once the cooking oil and other fats have cooled they can place them in a plastic bottle and put the whole bottle into the bank there is no need to empty the contents of the bottles. The new banks are at Bullock Fair Harleston, Ketts Park Wymondham, Co-op car park Long Stratton, Weavers Cour t Diss and Harford Bridge Tesco. Residents can also recycle cooking oil at Norfolk County Council’s Household Waste Recycling Centres.

SOUTH NORFOLK COUNCIL

A grand outcome for South Norfolk’s affordable housing. ver the last three year s South Norfolk Council has delivered over 1,000 affordable houses, more than any other authority in either Norfolk or Suffolk and is predicting to build another 1,000 over the next three year s.

O

This provision of affordable housing, through a combination of controlled growth and forward planning, in par tner ship with the government’s

Help to Buy Scheme has resulted in more than eleven hundred homes being bought or rented by people who would otherwise have str uggled to get onto the proper ty ladder. Yvonne Bendle, South Norfolk Council’s Cabinet member for Wellbeing and Ear ly Inter vention said. “Our record on delivering affordable homes and preventing homelessness is second to none and something in which we

take great pride. Ever y affordable home we’ve built is an oppor tunity for someone to have their own home and a chance for independence. We are keeping families close to each other, suppor ting our communities and providing local people with houses that they can afford.” You can find out more about affordable housing in South Norfolk by visiting the website www.south-norfolk.gov.uk

LONDON MARATHON

Arron Self, senior sales executive of Dispatch Magazine, takes a break from the office... smoother. And during the final weeks of training, the heavy workload gently eases off. Although I’ve completed a great part of the training, diligently racked up the miles, planned for fuelling, race pace, doubt, uncertainty and lethargy, not least of all, panic, is starting to creep in.

rron Self, senior sales executive of Dispatch Magazine, takes a break from the office to partake in the Virgin Money London Marathon. Here are his thoughts about his Big Day.

A

An ordinary Friday morning: 9am, a cup of tea, ready to tackle the day, preparing for the weekend. But this day was different to any other as I received an early-morning email to say that I had been confirmed as a participant in this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon. What an honour! What a challenge! To say I was excited and over the moon is an understatement. Three years had almost passed since I reminded myself not to run another marathon after undertaking a gruelling four-hour, ten-minute run round the beautiful surroundings of Brighton. But the London Marathon - one of the world’s most prestigious and well-loved marathons in the world - can’t be turned down. I did, however, commence training in the www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

hope that I would get a place but London Marathon, 23rd April, 2017 (St George’s Day), is now a reality. To prepare myself, I have three hard gruelling months ahead. I’m running for ‘Ambitious about Autism’, the national charity for children and young people with autism, a charity that I hold dear to my heart as my nephew is a sufferer of this terrible disease. And that’s an extra incentive for me to do well. Training takes it out me. Pains in places I didn’t know could hurt, Dr Salts in constant need. Finding motivation when I didn’t know I was able to provide myself with anymore. Early-morning runs compete with late-night runs, half marathons here, 10km runs there. Stretching every way possible, longing for that rest day, the chance to relax. Training for a marathon definitely takes over your life but good and regular training is certainly worth the effort. What you put in, you get out. As I become more accustomed to the training routine it becomes much

Reassuring myself is not easy either, especially when I have at least one conversation a day about finish times and brick walls. Do I put in extra training? Has my training plan been sufficient? Then I look at a picture of my nephew and realise that I’m doing the Marathon for him. Suddenly, my thinking becomes more focused, more positive and I feel much better within myself. Aged four, my nephew will always face discrimination towards him and will have to live with adverse experiences of being autistic for the rest of his life. But he’s aided by a wonderful charity that provides services, raises awareness and understanding and strongly campaigns for Wchange. I forgot the ‘Taper Training’ which means running smart, realising less is more when it really matters. Shorter workouts, some marathon-paced efforts but not over exerting myself but telling myself ‘I’ve got to do this’ within the four-hour time-limit I’ve set. I’ll give it my best shot. That’s for sure! Arron will be sharing his experiences of the race in Dispatch (June edition). Find out how he got on. In the meantime, if you wish to donate to the wonderful charity - ‘Ambitious about Autism’ - please visit Arron’s Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Arron-Self1 Wymondham & Dereham | 09

WYMONDHAM PLAYERS

April production of The Ladykillers by Graham Linehan ehear sals are well underway for Wymondham Player s April production of The Ladykiller s by Graham Linehan. The play, based on the 1950’s film of the same name , offer s many challenges for the director and cast. Not least in creating multiple rooms in a two storey house , all on one stage.

R

The stor y is based on a gang of bank robber s masquerading as a string quar tet, who are temporarily lodging with an elder ly lady while they plan the heist. The innocence of the old lady is a perfect foil against the scheming of the gang. Their imperfect, ad hoc planning of the robber y, leads to much confusion and mayhem, including an avant garde concer t, and all the time dear Mr s Wilberforce is in great danger. The fate of Mr s Wilberforce hangs on the success of the robber y ..... Nothing can go wrong .... Can it?? 10 | Wymondham & Dereham

A Brand New Tax Year!

t doesn’t seem possible but its true – already we are about to launch into another brand spanking new tax year – welcome 2017/18! It only seems a week or two ago that I was chasing up permissions to submit the stragglers in the “self assessment 16 swan song” as I like to call it! And now here we are ready to do it all over again!

I

If you are a keen reader of Dispatch then perhaps you have picked up your copy extra early (and why not it’s a great read, free and very informative, we love Dispatch!) then remember – not only is April the star t of the new self assessment tax year, it is also the beginning of the corporation tax year plus there is that all impor tant increase in minimum wage for over 25’s. Don’t forget if you are paying your staff after 31 March 2017 and they are over 25, you need to pay them £7.50 per hour and not a penny less!

12 | Wymondham & Dereham

Don’t get caught out with your payroll duties. The end of the tax year can be quite consuming for payroll departments. Not only do the March salaries need to be processed, but you need to be preparing the P60’s for

all staff and completing the final payment submissions for HMRC under real time. Make sure that the payments of PAYE that you have made tally with those that should have been paid and of course don’t forget to roll your

payroll scheme forward to the next tax year to start all over again. What with all of this and auto enrolment affecting more and more small businesses each month – maybe it is time to pass your payroll over and free up some much needed time. Our clients are usually surprised just how easy and relatively straight forward it is to switch their payroll over to us – no more hassles and trying to keep up with tax codes and HMRC submissions – just advise us of the dates you want you your employees to be paid and the rates and we will do the rest for you. (Well you do actually need to provide funds too!) So why not come and have a chat with us about payroll and whilst you are here we could talk about auto enrolment too! Auto enrolment can hold a real fear for small employers who have not yet reached their staging dates - not because they don’t want to support their loyal employees but because this is something else that they need to work

out and organise, more expenditure from the business at a time when every penny counts. Of course we at KBA are not allowed to sway you or suggest which pension company you choose for your scheme but once you have made that decision we at KBA would be really happy to work with you to establish if your employees are eligible or entitled to a pension scheme, plus help you with those all important letters and registering with the pension scheme of your choice. All this for a really good value price – so why not pick up the phone or send an email sooner rather than later. If you have been putting off Auto enrolment maybe now is the time to stop and come speak to us instead! Even if you have managed your own payroll up until now - pensions can take up valuable time so why not let us look after this side of your business so that you can concentrate on the part that you enjoy most. April 17 also heralds changes in tax relief for interest on rental properties plus of

www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

course there is the much publicised national insurance contribution increase for self employment which of course there has now been a U turn on! This may not be new news by the time you read this but it is definitely good news and therefore definitely worthy of mention! April is also the start of the new personal allowances - £11,500 personal allowance for each person with a transferable marriage allowance of £1150. The dividend allowance is also £5k but make the most of it as next year this reduces to £2k. If you are the proud owner of a limited company or are thinking of becoming incorporated then why not come and have a chat with us first here at KBA. Make sure that you know all the advantages (and disadvantages) before you go down the incorporation route. Also make sure that you have your timings right – we can help you with this to ensure that your accounting periods run concurrently for both company’s house and HMRC.

All in all – April is the star t of a whole new year in the world of finance so if you want to check anything out then now is the time to do it – don’t put it off any longer. Why not make an appointment come and see us ( we are friendly and hardly ever bite!!) then you can sit back and know that you are being tax efficient and reap the rewards. Finally we would like to take this oppor tunity to say a big thank you to all of you who came to see us during the last year. It was a busy but fantastic year at KBA – new employees, more office space and lots of lovely clients just like you. We are really grateful to all of you who use our services and do everything within our power to make KBA as efficient as possible in everything we do. So thank you and here’s to another fabulous year!

JASON AND HIS AMAZING MIDLIFE

Jason Donovan Announces 34-Date Uk Tour, An Evening Of Musings, Music And Mischief rom Neighbours to a char ttopping music career, from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to an appearance on I’m A Celebrity that sealed our affection, Jason Donovan has consistently captured the hear ts of his adopted country and enter tained us all along the way.

F

This Autumn, Donovan will take to the road on a 34-date UK tour for his autobiographical show ‘Jason and his Amazing Midlife Crisis’. The ‘in conversation’ style show will be filled with stories, laughter and music spanning Jason’s amazing career. Tickets for the tour are on sale on Friday the 24th March at 10am via www.jasondonovan.com The show will examine every aspect of Jason’s life, from where he began to where he is today as we revisit his past, present and future. Donovan’s self-effacing, mercurial story telling will shatter your illusions of the ‘teen hear t throb’ in a witty and enter taining show. Jason’s relentless enthusiasm and a refreshingly blunt compulsion towards honesty will reveal all about his rollercoaster life. The show will be a rare chance to get up close and personal with the star with an oppor tunity for the audience to ask questions. Jason will also perform some acoustic versions of his classic hits. Jason commented; “In the past I’ve either been too young, too busy or too dazed and confused to be able to make sense of my life. But now, on the eve of my fiftieth bir thday - and older and wiser, if a little more weathered - I believe that I am finally in a position to put my life into perspective. I’m in a great place, surrounded by good people and don’t feel like I need to prove myself any more”. Join Jason Donovan in conversation as he shares moments from the last four decades that he wasn’t able to tell us about on daytime television! Jason has many guises – star of stage and screen, radio DJ, actor, performer, friend, father, husband, brother, son and confirmed National Treasure. Here he tells us about the highlights and challenges, the oppor tunities and obstacles of being all of those things. He was the ultimate 80’s hear t-throb who commanded an audience of 22 million in ‘Neighbours’, dated Kylie and went on to score no fewer than 16 hit singles, sell over 30 million records worldwide and appear in 14 | Wymondham & Dereham

a series of hit West End musicals. But at the time, it didn’t make him happy… Pigeon-holed and marginalised as a teen hear t throb and family enter tainer, Donovan’s desire to shake-off his hear t throb image and be cool and credible resulted in him famously collapsing during a cocaine fuelled binge at Johnny Depp and Kate Moss’s par ty and passing out on top of Jack Nicholson. Meeting his wife and the subsequent birth of his children forced Donovan to re-evaluate his life. He reinvigorated his career on reality TV programmes I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! and Strictly Come Dancing. Eventually Jason re-found his love of performing with leading roles in Sweeney Todd, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Rocky Horror Show and Priscilla Queen of the Deser t, Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds, The Sound of Music, and Annie Get Your Gun. He also toured the UK in the highly acclaimed play The King’s Speech.

In the past I’ve either been too young, too busy or too dazed and confused to be able to make sense of my life.

Now aged 49 ½ and with a wealth of tantalising tales under his belt, Donovan’s autobiographical show takes the singer’s looming 50th birthday as its starting point and zigzags back and forth through a life in which becoming a heart-throb at 18 and falling from grace at 27 plays only a tiny part. Jason commented; “My dad always said to me, the secret to a long and happy life is not to take it all too seriously. I’ve been on the edge, pushed my life to the extreme and come back from it which has actually made me stronger and made me realise what I DON’T want to do with my life. I think perhaps the key to a good life is keeping a balance both physically and mentally and the realisation that success is not the key to happiness, happiness is the key to success” Tour Dates where Jason will be in Norfolk & Suffolk are; 09 October - Bury St Edmunds The Apex 03 November - Kings Lynn Corn Exchange 01 December - Lowestoft Marina Theatre

enough to just look at how you can change your life and earn an unlimited monthly income which grows and grows ever y month, take a look at our website and get instant access to see how simple it is to be in control of your own destiny. This is NOT a ‘Get Rich Quick Scheme’ but it is a ‘Get Rich Quicker System’ where you can earn a full time ‘residual’ income wor king just a few spare hour s each week, and change your life in a ver y shor t space of time. Why should you wor k 40 plus hour s a week for 40 plus year s of your life? So what is ‘Residual Income’? Residual income (also called passive income) is income that continues to be generated after the initial effor t has been made. Compare this to what most people focus on earning: linear income, which is “one-shot” compensation or payment in the form of a fee, wage, commission or salar y which is directly propor tional

to the number of hour s invested in it 40 hour s of pay for 40 hour s of wor k. Here’s an example of Residual Income; In 1998 my college spent 35 minutes showing a friend of his how this business wor ks. Last month he got paid for that conver sation for the 216th time for that 35 minute chat, 18 year s ago. So… how soon can you spare 10 minutes so I can answer all the questions I know you’ll have, and explain how you can get star ted immediately? CHARITY DARTS

World Dar ts Legends Return for The Annual Norwich Charity Dar ts Masters 2017 orwich City Football Club will be the venue for the popular annual Norwich Charity Darts Masters hosted by Lord Russell Baker on Saturday 24th June 2017. This event has been won in the previous two years by two former World Darts Champions with Keith Deller winning in 2015 and Steve Beaton the current reigning 2016 Norwich Charity Darts Masters champion.

N

On Saturday 24th June we will see Colin Lloyd (Jaws) former World No. 1 and World Match Play Champion in 2005 doing battle with the likes of Bob Anderson (The Limestone Cowboy) the former 1988 World Darts champion; the Winmau World Masters Champion in 1986, 1987 and 1988 – the first man to win the Masters in three successive years; PDC Semi-Finalist in 2004 & 2005; Captain of England and was ranked World No. 1 for over three years. Also current BDO darts power players Darryl Fitton (The Dazzler) The World Trophy Winner 2016 and current England player Tony O’Shea (Silverback) a seven times major finalist. All battling it out to win the Norwich Charity Darts Masters Trophy in 2017. Where the dar ts legends and BDO stars go into battle to win this coveted trophy. The trophy was donated by David Willimott of Carmichael’s in Magdalene Street back in 2015, and once again it will be a night to remember! Who will be the champion in June 2017? www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

The evening will be a wonderful opportunity to meet with former World champion darts legends; former world No’1’s; BDO Heavyweights and World Finalists. Following tradition, we will be holding a raffle where eight lucky ticket holders will have the opportunity to compete against one of the professionals on the Oche in front of a buzzing crowd. Lord Russell Baker said, “I’m simply thrilled to be able to bring another top night of darts legends and BDO stars to Norwich for the 3rd year running. What an amazing opportunity for darts fanatics to meet these icons of the game and in doing so raising valuable funds for local charities”. Lord Russell Baker of Little Moulton has successfully organised and run the Norwich Charity Darts Masters for the past two years, all in aid of the ‘Lord Baker Community Fund’ managed by the Norfolk community foundation. The community fund aids other local charities through grants, with money raised from events such as this. Charities helped in the past and who will receive donations from the 2017 Norwich Charity Darts Masters include; Star Throwers Cancer care and support, Norfolk Accident Rescue Service’s (NARS) who’s patron is Lord Baker himself; Chapel Road School for physically and mentally handicapped children in Attleborough, and The Norfolk Community Foundation. In addition, funding is also provided to aid local community projects

where invitations are encouraged each year for grants of up to £1,000. In 2015 the Norwich Charity Darts Masters raised over £10k for these charities which was followed by whooping 12k in 2016. Raising over £22k in the last two years, we can’t wait to see how much we can raise in 2017. Megan Rooney who is working on an Internship at Amber Dew Events said, “I am proud to work for such a charitable company. Having just moved to the area for university I think the event gives an amazing community feel and the charity work Lord Baker has done is incredible. The charities involved in the event are all such vital services that bring Norfolk closer together, and I am really excited to be able to help raise money and look forward to being part of a great night” Not only will you have a wonderful night with a fantastic atmosphere, but you will be helping support and fund some incredible charities all in your local area; and with ticket prices reduced this year this event will make a perfect gift to treat yourself, a loved one, or team up with friends and work colleagues. Tickets available include VIP tables/Seats and standard entry with tickets starting at £20 each. BAT-HOUNDS SEEK THEIR SIDEKICKS

Superhero Canines From Dogs Trust Snetter ton Looking For Forever Homes n influx of hounds with Batman ears, dubbed ‘Bat-hounds’, have been handed over at Dogs Trust Snetterton, as if they have just arrived from Gotham City.

A

The team at the Norfolk rehoming centre are appealing for homes for Ben the crossbreed, Diego the Siberian Husky, Finn the Akita, Peggy the Greyhound and German Shepherds Sasha and Major, whose ears resemble the famous superhero. Searching for their sidekicks, the homeless hounds are sending Bat-signals into the sky to potential adopters in pursuit of their ‘furry tail’ ending. Diane McLelland-Taylor, Dogs Trust Snetterton Rehoming Centre Manager, said: “We’ve had a flurry of superhero activity at Dogs Trust Snetterton recently and now these adorable ‘Bat-hounds’ are looking for their special someone! Our four-legged friends are all ready to save the day and become the hero of your home and life.” When he isn’t catching villains, sweetheart Ben likes a fuss once he knows you. ‘Bat-Ben’ loves toys, treats and plenty of walks, as he needs lots of mental and physical stimulation. Beautiful Ben can get excitable in busy environments, so he would be best suited 22 | Wymondham & Dereham

to a calm home. The four-year-old requires positive reward-based training to bring out his best qualities, with a patient, adult-only family without any four-legged friends.

to call home, with a big comfy bed to relax in and someone to accompany her on daily walks. Peggy can live with another canine chum and children over 10 years old.

Next arriving in his Bat-mobile is dashing Diego. This loveable, lively boy has a real playful side. Active and alert, this chap enjoys exercise and will require plenty of activity in his new ‘furever’ home. Aside from lots of walks, Diego is looking for his adopters to continue his socialisation training and help improve his confidence. The two-year-old is happy to live with young people aged 16 and above, and he would like his owners to be around most of the time while he settles in.

Striking Sasha loves nothing more than to walk in quiet, rural areas. Sasha responds to gentle, positive handling and is looking forward to finding an adopter willing to boost her confidence. The two-year-old can be vocal upon seeing another four-legged friend and would benefit from further socialisation. This lovely fluffy girl is looking for a calm home with children over the age of 14.

Soppy Finn loves playing with soft toys. This bright boy loves his treats, and is keen to put in the effort into training and learning new tricks. Finn is looking for a breed-experienced home with adopters who are willing to continue his positive reward-based training. Three-year-old Finn can live with children aged 14 years or above, and he would like his new *superheroes (*family) to be at home for the majority of the time while he adjusts. Pretty Peggy is a loveable girl who enjoys long walks and tasty treats. This one-year-old is looking for a hero to offer her a new place

Majestic Major has a major intellect to match his name! This sparky and clever boy responds well to positive training, giving him opportunities to use his impressive brainpower. The two-year-old loves to exercise his body just as much as his mind. Major would benefit from an experienced, active home where he can continue his education. He is best suited to a rural home with a sizeable garden that he can call his own, and would prefer to be the only pet in an adult-only environment. If you think you could be the sidekick for any of these handsome hounds, please contact Dogs Trust Snetterton on 0300 303 0292 or visit www.dogstrust.org.uk. www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

ELDERLY

THE HEARING CARE CENTRE 8 Signs you may have hearing loss here are many different causes of hearing loss and even different types of hearing loss. The most common cause of hearing loss is ‘presbycusis’ or agerelated hearing loss. Typically, hearing loss due to age is influenced by genetics, exposure to loud sounds through your lifetime and general overall health. Although hearing loss due to age occurs at different rates and affects each person differently throughout their life, one thing is common for all – it occurs gradually. Like any medical condition, the sooner you address the hearing loss the better outcome you will have. The following are 10 common signs that you may have hearing loss. If you suspect you or a loved one is suffering from hearing loss, organise a visit to a local hearing care specialist.

T

1.You have trouble hearing people talking on the telephone. Most phones come with a volume control setting, so you might not have trouble hearing your friend or family. However if you need it at max volume, chances are you may have some level of hearing loss.

24 | Wymondham & Dereham

2.The family complains that the TV is too loud. When your kids or significant other complain that the TV is too loud, this is probably the best sign of a hearing problem. If you think this might only be an issue for older generations, think again. The fact is, hearing professionals like me are seeing younger and younger patients – who have experienced some degree of hearing loss due to long-term exposure to music.

that background noise makes it difficult to hear conversation at your table. People with hearing loss often have problems masking out background noise.

3.You strain to hear conversations. Ever have a headache at the end of the day? Feel completely exhausted after a simple day of conversing with friends or family? Chances are this fatigue is caused by constant straining to follow the conversation. Having to focus all day to clearly hear conversation is exhausting work and can lead to headaches, fatigue and exhaustion. Hearing aids will help you follow what is being said and make you feel better at the end of the day.

6. People don’t speak clearly. Sounds seem muffled, or when people are talking it sounds like they’re mumbling. This is because often (especially in age-related hearing loss) the high frequencies (those that make up the consonants) are the first to be affected by sensorineural hearing loss; and it’s these that give clarity to speech.

4. Trouble hearing in noisy environments. You’re out with some friends at a restaurant for dinner and it’s noisy. All of

5. You say ‘Pardon?’ a lot. If “what?” or “pardon?” is the most commonly used word in your vocabulary, you aren’t getting the sound signals you need to process sound correctly.

7. You misunderstand what people say. “Its 11o’clock” “No, John, I said, ‘What kind is it? Not what time is it!”. Misunderstanding people can be embarrassing, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Hearing aids can enable you to understand conversation

Breckland Windows and avoid the awkwardness of mishearing important directions, the punch line to a joke or the lyrics to your favourite song. 8. You have trouble hearing children and women. Hearing loss within a specific frequency is very common and with age, you are more likely to experience hearing loss within the higher frequencies. Since women and children speak at higher pitches or frequencies, it’s often more difficult to hear what your granddaughter or wife is saying to you than when your best friend with a big, booming, deep voice speaks to you. What’s the next step? If you recognise one or two of the above signs, please do not panic. We all experience times where we have trouble hearing. However seeking advice from a hearing care specialist would be recommended, just so you can establish where your hearing levels are at. If your hearing is within the expected limits, then brilliant. If it is not so good and you might need some help then at least you can find out what options are available to you. You might just be surprised!
