WYMONDHAM Kerry Butcher Accountancy Services There is lots going on in the world of tax and finance at the moment It’s hard to believe that January is looming already. The Christmas lights will soon be packed away if they haven’t already been switched off and put back in their boxes and we will all be trying desperately to think of something cheerful to look forward to, knowing that it is a long haul until Easter with nothing much to look forward to before then. Did you know that the most popular day to book a holiday is usually 25 January? I reckon this is because finally we are getting paid again after the spending in the January sales and we all would love to see the sun – even if it is only online or in a brochure for now, we can dream. But how are you going to pay for this lovely holiday that you have booked? Can you even afford the deposit let alone the balance – it always seems that day when the balance of your payment is due comes around a lot quicker than the holiday itself. Can you even afford the deposit? Now if you are an employed and receive a nice regular wage every month or week, you are probably sitting there wondering what on earth I am wittering about. If you are self employed then you have probably gone very pale and feel ever so slightly sick because of course 31 January is PAY YOUR TAX DAY! Not only that but it is also the final day to file your self assessment tax return and avoid a £100 penalty – so make sure that your tax affairs are up to date. Now if you are kind enough to read these editorials on a regular basis you will know that I spend a lot of my time talking about self assessment and tax returns – but this time something different: I was very surprised to find just how many people don’t know that they can claim tax relief on www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

mileage from HMRC. If you use your car for business and you are employed, no doubt you claim expenses which your employer pays you at the rate that has been agreed.

place so don’t get caught out. Why not consider changing to a nice convenient payroll provider who can look after your payroll each week or month for surprisingly little cost!

Now for a lot of people this is the standard 45p per mile for the first 10,000 miles and 25p thereafter. But quite a lot of employers don’t pay this amount, they pay less, some as little as 14p per mile. If you are in this category, did you know that you can claim the tax relief on the difference between the mileage rate you receive and the HMRC recommended rate from HMRC.

Finally if you were busy over the Christmas period and business was booming, don’t forget to check your turnover value. Remember that you must always check that you are not exceeding the VAT registration threshold and this is calculated on a rolling basis. Don’t get caught out and forget to check this value – chances are if you had a really busy December then this could well have bumped your turnover right up. Don’t panic if you are nearing or have exceeded the VAT threshold, if this is a one off

To claim this you need to complete a Form P87 or ask a friendly accountancy firm to do this for you. You might be surprised just how much you can get back. It may be worth trying to backdate this if you qualify. For more details why not call us or email.

and is unlikely to happen in the future – you can apply to HMRC for an exception or it may be that being VAT registered is the right thing for you. Why not come and chat to us – we can discuss your business and help you to decide what is best for you. We can also help with the VAT registration process and claiming VAT back on prior registration purchases so don’t miss out on a boost to start you off. Finally whatever you are doing this January, I hope it is a healthy, happy and exciting new year for you. I hope that you can make 2016 a year to remember for all the right reasons! HAPPY NEW YEAR!

If you have made some New Year Resolutions, perhaps one of them might be to get your business payroll sorted out once and for all. Real time information or RTI has been around for quite some time now and is old hat – but there are still some employers out there who are receiving fines on a regular basis because they haven’t quite got to grips with the system and are late filing their returns each month. Remember HMRC have advised that you must submit a return each time you pay one or more employees and you must give details of their earnings and their deductions. This report must be filed on or before the date that you pay your employees. Lots of small businesses are still getting caught out and although the charging of penalties on late RTI submissions was delayed, these are now in 2016 January | 05

WYMONDHAM East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH)

If these options are all too much – make a simple resolution to make a donation to EACH:

Make a New Years’ Resolution to support your local children’s hospice East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is calling upon the people of Norfolk to make an extra special New Years’ resolution for 2015 - to support local lifethreatened children and young people. EACH provides care for children and young people with lifethreatening conditions and supports their families across East Anglia. For both families accessing care, and those who have been bereaved, EACH is a lifeline at an unimaginably difficult time. There are many ways in which you can make New Years’ resolutions which not only benefit

you as an individual, but these local families. Getting healthy is always top of the list, and there’s plenty of ways to do it and raise vital funds. You could get sponsored to go on a diet, give up smoking or drinking alcohol and donate the money you save to the charity too. As well as abstaining, you could get active by taking part in a challenge to improve your fitness, register for a 10km run near to you and raise money for your efforts. If you fancy a tougher challenge here are some suggestions - visit our website for lots more!

• Team EACH Skydive at Beccles Airfield, 24th April • Lands End to John O’Groats cycle ride, 10th May • RideLondon, 30th July

• Visit our website and click on donate – www.each.org.uk • Send a cheque to - East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), Suite 5, The Old Dairy, Elm Farm Business Park, Norwich Common, Wymondham, Norfolk, NR18 0SW

If you fancy something a little less active then why not have a collection pot at home and collect your loose change in aid of EACH or have a clear out and hold a car boot sale. Not all resolutions need to have a fundraising element however – you could pledge to donate your time as a volunteer, learn a new skill or help raise awareness of the cause.

For further information about the Lord Baker events for 2016 please visit the Lord Baker of Little Moulton web site - http:// norfolklord.co.uk

Although funding for the building has been secured, this does not include specialist outdoor learning resources needed outside the classrooms. We need to raise additional funding to set up exciting and innovative outdoor learning spaces across the school grounds. Our plans include special equipment for children with multi-sensory impairment such as sensory play equipment and

We would like to thank Lord Baker for his contribution, and look forward to working with him in 2016 when he plans to launch a community fund as part of his charitable giving to support local community projects.” The Lord Baker Community Fund will continue to grow in 2016 with some amazing events being planned. The Norwich Charity Darts Masters at Norwich City Football Club on Saturday 25th June has already been organised. GENERAL If YOU want more money, you NEED to read this! An opportunity you can’t afford to miss! I went to a job interview today and when the business owner asked what my remuneration expectations were, I replied; • First I would like to receive a brand new Car for helping my friends and family save money on their bills. • I expect you to provide me with the very best online training, plus unlimited access to high quality classroom training (and my own personal mentor for the times in between or when I can’t be bothered to log on to your free training sites or search your jam packed website). • I want you to pay for me and my partner to go for dinner once a month with wine/beer • I expect you to pay me every time a customer I introduce to your services pays their bill to you....forever. • I want in writing that I can earn

money while I am asleep through your company and if I don’t want to get out of my pyjamas for a month, you won’t sack me.... and in fact you will give me a pay raise. • I want you to reward me when I help other people succeed in your business and I want them to have the opportunity to earn more than I do if they wish (even though I introduced them and got a head start). • I want you to do all the maintenance on my personal hosted website, including videos with well known celebrities and updates on new products and services. • I want you to arrange for 4000 people to fill a room and clap and cheer while I walk across the stage. I want this to happen several times a year and the only reason you will do it is because I will have completed my ‘job’.

• I want you to send me and my family on a 5star luxury holiday. • The family holiday will be exhausting so you better send me and my partner away on a European city break too. • I want you to promise that if I work for you for 3-5 years for just 10 hours a week, you will give me complete financial and time freedom.

It’s FREE for you to get all the information you need so you can make an informed decision. This opportunity is open to everyone, and we will give you unlimited FREE training at a venue local to you, we will give you a FREE mentor to help you get started and FREE unlimited help and ongoing support. It’s up to you to make it happen, just call me now 07802 690589 (Jonathan).

So.....when can I start ??? After he recovered from shock, he threw his head back and laughed out loud “You can’t be serious! You’re dreaming … You will never find an opportunity like that... ANYWHERE ... And if you do, come back to me and I’ll work with you!” So I stood up, give him my business card and said ...”Call Me” You see, with Utility Warehouse you really can have all of the above. Just get in touch and I WILL show you how. It’s FREE to talk and/or meet with me.

MOTORING Jeep Renegade Italian job special report The Renegade is different. You see, it’s the first Jeep product to be produced exclusively outside of North America. It’s built in Melfi, Italy, alongside the related Fiat 500X, with which it shares its platform. Now, you’d think that might get some Jeep purists’ panties all bunched up. After all, one of the most notable reasons to buy a Jeep is the fact that it is designed, built, and created in the United States – and it has been since the 1940s. But it seems most people are pretty cool about the change. That’s because, while it may look different, the conventional quality associated with the brand hasn’t been diluted. Yes, it may be astonishing or even disliked by a minority, but the decision to make the Renegade in Italy has served the car well. Let me explain: The somewhat extraordinary Renegade is Jeep’s debut into the small sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment, and the Melfi Plant is, fittingly, no ordinary car factory. Over one billion Euros have been recently invested, making this one of Europe’s most innovative automotive manufacturing works. The highest production quality is achieved by implementing the technologies and best practices collected from parent company FCA, the Fiat-Chrysler amalgam. Indeed, the plant has been awarded a silver medal for World Class Manufacturing and currently has its eyes set on the gold. Inside, there is an eightthousand-strong workforce; five presses; two shearing machines and more robots than you can shake a stick at. There are 860 of them welding the basic bodywork together and fifty-four automatons in the paint shop. There are also 278 automatic screwing stations; and nearly four thousand workers in the final assembly shop.

14 | January 2016

It’s only when the Renegade comes out at the end of the production process that you realise how funky it is. The car is obviously aimed at youthful and adventurous car buyers – and the colours back that up. The yellow, orange, blue, red and green models I saw at Melfi looked like a bunch of skittles (the sweets, not the game) with a wheel at each corner. Yet, the overall appearance is rugged and hip, thanks to a combination of the brand’s classic styling cues. Features such as the seven slot grille, round headlamps and trapezoidal wheel arches all blend with the fresh, modern look. Inside, the Jeep edges towards premium. Functional details crafted from high quality materials and innovative colours ensure the Renegade is likely to become a polished addition to your life. It’ll be a practical one too, courtesy of best-in-class interior space and clever, functional storage areas. Equipment has been designed to boost on-board comfort. Advanced tech includes a touchscreen for infotainment – and a range of options includes two lightweight panels known as ‘My Sky’. These can be easily removed and stowed in the boot for an open-air experience. There are different powertrain combinations, each of which offers a combination of efficiency and performance. The two MultiAir II petrol engines with a 1.6 and 1.4 capacity are nippy, then there’s a punchier pair of turbo diesels in either 1.6 or 2.0 litre guise.

The up-to-the-minute 4x4 gadgetry supplies the proper amount of torque for any driving situation, ensuring safety even in the slipperiest conditions. The rear axle disconnect system seamlessly switches between two and four-wheel-drive to guarantee traction.

There are also five and sixspeed manual gearboxes, a dual dry clutch transmission and a nine-speed automatic gearbox. Available with two or four-wheel drive the Renegade boasts two new, advanced 4x4 systems too: Jeep Active Drive and Jeep Active Drive Low.

The Jeep Renegade range has four trim levels: Sport, Longitude, Limited and Trailhawk. Although the Sport is the entry to the range, it features a high level of spec. Standard equipment includes a five-inch touchscreen with a DAB radio and Bluetooth plus auxiliary and USB

connectors, a 3.5-inch electronic vehicle information centre, airconditioning, electric parking brake and 16-inch aluminium wheels. The Longitude offers high levels of functionality and comfort. It does so by augmenting the Sport model’s features with optional four-wheel drive, plus large car equipment such as cruise control, ambient LED lighting, a leather wrapped steering wheel and satellite navigation, as well as 17-inch aluminium wheels. The Limited tops the range in terms of tech and has 18-inch

aluminium wheels, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats and steering wheel, leather upholstery, the segment leading seven-inch colour Thin Film Technology (TFT) electronic vehicle information centre, 6.5inch touchscreen with sat nav and Bluetooth, privacy glass, rear parking sensors and silver side roof rails, door mirrors and front grille. The Trailhawk is the model with the most ability off-road, thanks to the Jeep active drive low and selec-terrain system with hill descent control and rock mode. It has all the key equipment from

www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

the Limited model and stands out as being the most capable Renegade of the lot. All models have air-conditioning with Limited and above adding dual-zone climate control. The controls for this nestle in the lower part of the dashboard. Beneath it and directly below the USB, auxiliary inputs and 12-volt power outlet there’s a storage compartment complete with a mat moulded with the topography of Moab, a legendary off-road spot in Utah for Jeep enthusiasts. So, if you’re a bit bonkers; you’re addicted to merriment and you

like bright colours, then the Jeep Renegade could well be for you. What’s more, you can take your family with you. ‘What’? I hear you cry. Yes, that’s right; this Jeep is good for your kids too. So enjoy having them about while they’re young because they’ll always remember mum or dad with that crazy cool Jeep – the car that no other parent in the neighbourhood was canny enough to buy. Sure, it may not be the same visual image you’re used to, but the Jeep emblem doesn’t tell untruths, this Renegade is built to serve – and in the nicest and most welcoming way possible.

With the growth in house prices over the last few decades, many people find their estate is worth much more than £250,000, even though they may not consider themselves especially well off.

If you fail to have a valid Will in place when you die, then the law decides who will benefit from your estate.

If your estate is worth over this figure, then these rules mean that it can be shared with children, parents, siblings or in some cases, more distant relatives that you never knew existed!

This can result in people that you would not have chosen becoming beneficiaries. According to the law today, if you die without a Will, your spouse or civil partner will inherit everything, and if you have children, they inherit the first £250,000, plus your personal belongings and half of your estate on trust until they reach the age of 18.

entitlement to receive anything. Making a Will is often a much quicker, simpler process that costs far less than you might think. Best not to put things off and make a Will now!

In the event that no surviving family members can be traced, then your estate which may have taken a lifetime to accumulate could end up passing to the Government. Another thing to bear in mind is that under current law an unmarried partner has no

ELDERLY Prepare for Colder Weather Tips to stay safe this winter • Keep an eye on weather forecasts, particularly severe weather warnings from the Met Office. • Stock up on store cupboard basics such as soup, tinned fish and long life milk in case you can’t get out of your home for a couple of days. • Nominate a flu friend or neighbour who can collect essentials such as prescriptions on your behalf. • Keep a list of useful and emergency contacts by your phone and add local organisations and charities who support older people. • Know where your stopcock and gas meter are located. • Make sure your pipes are adequately lagged and your roof properly insulated. • Keep torches, a battery-

powered radio and spare batteries where they’re easy to find in the dark in case of power cuts. • Ensure that only Gas Safe registered engineers work on your gas appliances. Illegal gas fitters can put your life at risk. Always check the engineers’ Gas Safe Register ID card. • Make sure gas appliances have a regular service and a gas safety check every 12 months. • Look our for any warning signs that your gas appliances aren’t working correctly eg lazy yellow or orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room. • Know the signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning - headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse

and loss of consciousness. Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm. • Don’t take any risks in snow or icy conditions. If you have to go out, make sure you wear shoes with a good grip. • Have your flu jab – book your appointment now if you haven’t already done so. • Try to eat a balanced diet and eat small portions at regular intervals throughout the day. • Drink plenty of fluids. • If you can, get up and move around. If your mobility is more limited, do some chair exercises to help you stay warm and active. Good hand hygiene can prevent the spread of viruses. • If eligible, join the Priority Service Register of your energy distributor to ensure you receive support during prolonged power outages. • Have a hot drink regularly and if you find moving about difficult, have a flask handy. • Have your heating system checked every year and consider

installing thermostatic valves on radiators in the rooms you use the most. • Ask about any benefits, grants and discounts you might be entitled to such as pension credits, winter fuel payments and insulation. • Wear warm clothes in layers. • Make sure you know how to contact your neighbours by phone – it’s easy to lose touch in the winter when people aren’t out and about as much. • Sign up to a Royal Voluntary Service Good Neighbours or Befriending service to receive regular contact. • Continue to go to your social activities with friends or at the local community centre. If you can’t get out for any reason, call them to let them know and ask to keep in touch by phone.SGN • If you can, get a mobile phone (as it does not rely on your electricity supply) and keep it charged.

ELDERLY The Hearing Care Centre Treating hearing loss can help keep your New Year’s Resolutions Every New Year brings with it a sense of renewal. For many, this renewal may include New Year’s resolutions pledging that the next year will prove better than the last. The challenge is not making these resolutions, but making sure they do not melt away with the snow as winter turns to spring. Some common resolutions might include reducing stress levels, staying in touch more regularly with family and friends, and being more socially involved. For those who struggle with hearing loss, keeping these and other perennial resolutions may prove challenging. Here are a few examples of how treating your hearing loss in the New Year can help you achieve your resolutions and improve your life.

addressing your hearing concerns may be a step in the right direction. Being able to communicate with family and friends without worrying about what was said by a loved one over the phone, on Skype, or face-to-face is of the utmost importance. Not only does it put your mind at ease, it makes conversations with loved ones that much easier. Branching out Hearing loss may hinder you from branching out and meeting new people. If you are nervous to extend your social circle because of your hearing loss, addressing the issue in the New Year could be the push you need to make new friends and experience new adventures in the coming year.

Have you always wanted to volunteer with an organisation or join a club but have been too self-conscious about your hearing loss? Don’t let apprehension and worry keep you from meeting new people and enjoying all the sights and sounds that the world has to offer. Starting a new hobby Starting a new hobby, whether by yourself or in a group setting, can be both challenging and entertaining. If you would like to learn how to play a new instrument and want to better hear the notes, or if you are taking a class at your local college and want to be able to contribute to the discussion without feeling nervous, having the confidence to address your hearing issues can lead to new talents and friends. Taking action If any of the above scenarios

resonate with you, your hearing loss could be a barrier to accomplishing your resolutions. It may be time to add another resolution to the list: book a hearing assessment. Seeking help, advice and ultimately treating your hearing loss will benefit not only your physical health but your mental and social health as well. Placing priority on your hearing health will not only help you to achieve your New Year’s resolutions, but will give you a renewed confidence in your hearing and social life. Invest in your hearing. Invest in yourself. Karen Finch is the Managing Director and lead audiologist at The Hearing Care Centre. The multi-award winning, family-run company has 20 centres across Suffolk and Norfolk. For more information please call 0800 096 2637 or visit www. hearingcarecentre.co.uk

Reducing stress Staying stress free in the New Year may seem like an insurmountable task, but we can all do a few things to make sure stress doesn’t dominate our lives. Hearing-related stress can present itself in everyday situations with the potential to significantly increase your overall stress level. If you have become nervous to speak up when clarifying what was said in a conversation, or avoid loud places for fear of being cut from the conversation, it may be time to address your hearing issues. Finding a solution could help you reduce some of your daily stress. Staying in touch with family and friends Staying connected with family and friends is difficult whether loved ones are spread across the country or live just around the corner. If keeping in touch with the important people in your life tops your list of resolutions, 20 | January 2016
