Planning Permission Approved For New Norfolk Children’s Hospice The possibility of a purpose-built children’s hospice in Norfolk to revolutionise the way children’s palliative care is delivered is a step closer after a planning application by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) was granted. Subject to a successful fundraising campaign, the new hospice will be built on a 5-acre woodland plot in Framingham Earl and will replace the charity’s current facility in Quidenham in the south of the county. Graham Butland, EACH Chief Executive, said: “The current Norfolk hospice in Quidenham has provided care and support for more than two decades and has been a home from home for families, but it’s very restricted in its facilities and development and a new hospice will bring the county in line with services we offer in Cambridgeshire, Essex and Suffolk. “We’d like to thank everyone involved in the project so far. We’re over the first hurdle in gaining planning permission, but we’ve now got the challenge of encouraging the good people of East Anglia to help us raise the funds needed to build and equip the new hospice.” Accessibility and flexibility is restricted at Quidenham and there isn’t room for expansion. Quidenham is in south Norfolk with many families travelling large distances to access care – often when time is vital. Benefits of the new hospice will include:

• More choice and flexibility for families. • Improved accessibility and specialist equipment across the whole building. • A hydrotherapy pool. • Far better dedicated facilities for play and music therapy, and more appropriate areas for older children and young people. • Better and more appropriate family accommodation. • Dedicated bathrooms for all bedrooms. • Improved facilities for on-site family support groups and activities. • Nearer to the centre of the county making it easier for many families to visit and with closer/easier access to the county’s hospitals.

EACH Fundraising, Suite 5, The Old Dairy, Elm Farm Business Park, Wymondham, NR18 0SW. Tel: 01953 666767 Email: norfolk@each.org.uk Twitter: @EACH_Norfolk To find out more visit: www.each.org.uk/norfolkhospice

With the purchase of land, building costs and professional fees, the appeal will need to raise in the region of £10 million, in addition to the voluntary funds still required to run EACH services during this time. EACH will continue to run Quidenham hospice to its current high standards until a new hospice is built. If you’d like to help the appeal to build a new children’s hospice for Norfolk, please contact the EACH Norfolk Fundraising team:

Suffolk & Norfolk Youth Action More Talk - More Action .... SNYA Ambassadors Suffolk and Norfolk Youth Action Ambassadors met up with likeminded young people from around the UK to attend the inaugural meeting of a UK Youth Alcohol Awareness Group. Matthew Dowse and Jamie Debenham travelled by train to arrive at their hotel in Newcastle before attending the Conference the following day. The group is the first of its kind in the UK and started off with a talk about the effects that excessive alcohol consumption has on the nation.

Callum and Branni The delegates then split into groups to focus on specific problems and to present possible solutions. After lunch, the group discussed how they would like to take the group forward and selected one of the members as a youth co-ordinator, with others opting for responsibilities, such as media, press or website design. The group intend to meet again for their second meeting in two months’ time in London. Closer to home, SNYA Ambassadors, Tom Ferguson and Catriona McKendrick, attended the second meeting of the Wymondham Youth Provision Group at Norfolk Constabulary’s Head Quarters. They joined five other young people, four police officers and three youth provision providers to discuss the present youth provision and highlight any shortfalls in youth activities provided in and around Wymondham. Our Ambassadors commended the youth bus that is situated on Browick Park each Friday evening. They particularly liked the presence of adults saying that it made them feel safe knowing that they could be called upon if needed. SNYA Ambassadors also liked the confidential nature of the discussion area that could be accessed on the upstairs of the bus. They suggested several activities, including a youth cinema, drama and acting opportunities, venues for young

August 2014

people to perform live music, and regular competitions for the users of the skateboard and BMX track. Our members thought that it would be a good idea for the provision of a sports co-ordinator that could deliver informal ‘street’ sports. They discussed the Leisure Centre facilities and the provision of uniformed youth activities that they attended in the town. Other young people talked about the improvement and expansion of the Skateboard and BMX track, whilst broken glass and rubbish was an apparent problem on one of the play areas. This group thought that the provision of a youth shelter was inadequate with discarded rubbish and glass being present and this should be upgraded. At the end of the meeting the group was tasked to research costs to provide some of the youth provision recommended. School Radio SNYA School Radio is where we take our portable radio station to work with students within their classrooms. One such annual excursion is to work with Year 6’s from Harleston Primary School. The students told me that they are really looking forward to moving up to high school and looked back fondly at the time they had spent, many since reception year, at their primary school. Year 6 is probably the first big milestone in your child’s life, as they move from being the biggest kid in their school to one of the smallest in the next. Children from Harleston Primary School usually go on to Archbishop Sancroft High School (ASHS) with a few going on to Bungay High and Stradbook High Schools. The thing is, all the High Schools do a great job preparing the Year 6’s for their first year at big school with several taster days and visits. The students tell me that the biggest problem is finding your way around; they are most afraid of getting lost but had been provided with maps. They are also looking forward to making new friends as there are several feeder schools around the Harleston area. Most did not expect to be in the same class as their mates at the next school, but felt reassured that their

existing friendship groups would be helpful in the early days in their new environment. The students were looking forward to their new lessons and thought that ASHS would have more sports equipment than they presently have and were most looking forward to the after school clubs and teams. Throughout the day the students told me how they had enjoyed their time at Harleston Primary School and would definitely miss the place. They said that the teachers were fantastic and the school was a loving environment. During Year 6 they had visited London where they participated in an acting master class at the Globe Theatre, visited Westminster, Tate Modern and the Museum of London. They had many highlights of the day, including all the students performing living art by forming a shape of an eye with some being the iris and others being the eye lashes. The most humorous time was travelling on the Underground and the most exciting was eating tea at McDonalds.

Lloyd Potter environment, probably making great friends who will remain loyal to you for the rest of your lives and who knows, some of you may even meet your life partners. Year 6 transition from Primary School to High School is not the only year group on the move at this time of year because of course, Year 11’s move on to employment, apprenticeships or their chosen further education establishments.

The students told me how they had enjoyed the MusicMix concert back in March at The Hippodrome, Great Yarmouth, hosted by CBBC’s Rebecca Keatley. The event consisted of a 60 piece BBC Concert Orchestra and performances by, friends of SNYA Radio, the rock band, The Rumble. The boys and girls looked back fondly at their performance of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and looked forward to the forthcoming residential at Hollowford Centre in Derbyshire. Consistently, the young people mentioned the clip- on- tie myth. There is not an epidemic of people being swung around by this garment. The clip- on- tie is held up as the best neck wear by Headteachers and Principals because it can only be worn when the top button is fastened, the tie length cannot be altered and it gives the school a better image in the community. As the time approaches for you to purchase your new school uniforms and shiny shoes, apprehension will continue to grow for both you and your parents. Rest assured, you are going to have a great time in your new learning

Jack and Oliver SNYA Radio worked at Archbishop Sancroft High School (ASHS) in Harleston at the ‘Cluster Arts Festival Event 2014’. This was an event that not only saw an exhibition of the students GCSE art work but also included performances by the School’s Orchestra, Steel Band and several rock-pop bands such as ‘Hell brothers’ and ‘Unicorn and the Voltage’. The cluster schools (Primary Schools whose pupils predominantly feed into the High Schools) also participated in the

@Dispatch_Mag

Order and/or disorder GCSE Art course work. Throughout the day, students from Harleston, Alburgh and Brockdish and Pulham St. Mary Primary Schools attended the event held at the Sancroft Centre. During the exhibition, the students, members of the public, guests and parents, selected Lloyd Potter’s work as the ‘Best in Show’, whilst Olivia Dey collected the award for the most creative piece. ASHS takeover of SNYA Radio was a great success with a mixture of music and chat. Yvette Tyler, station manager for the day, organised interviews, radio plays and the ‘French word on the hour - every hour’ as well as ‘thought for the day’ from teacher, Nigel Tuffnell. Students broadcast the weather report using data collected from their very own weather station.

Jeremy Burton, Club Chairman, told me that they were expecting about 120 people at the celebration event. “It has been another successful year for the Club and this evening is to say a big thank you by recognising the achievements of the lads and girls at the club. We have received £40,000 from the Lottery Award and an additional £20,000 from Breackland Council to extend the Gym and refurbish our existing facility. This will benefit the club immensely, as we will be able to simultaneously train two groups one in the classroom and the other in the gym. The support has been incredible throughout the season from both the squad and everyone involved with the club.” Karen Pettitt, Attleborough Town Mayor, said of the event, “that it recognises all the Club has achieved

motorbike in 2010. Ryan was a member of the Attleborough Boxing Club. Douglas Stratton told me that he was looking forward to receiving his certificate, as a squad member, and that the Award Ceremony evokes feelings of tension and awkwardness. “You don’t know who will be receiving the trophies as the winners are chosen by the coaches.” Santiago Weaver was presented with the Derek Barnard Cup- Junior Boxer of the Year Trophy and he told me that his last bout went all the way and he won on ‘points’. It is now closed season so the training is winding down but still intense; he runs just one and a half miles instead of three. Ben Clarke, Bronze Award winner, said that he was about to travel to Harlow in Essex to box in the Easton Counties Novice Championship. He said that it

The interviews were of a very high standard, including items on Creative Canapes, Forensic Science and hair, and Art and Mathematics. Richard Cranmer, Headteacher, participated in the broadcast, as well as many students.

Attleborough Amateur Boxing Club SNYA was invited to cover the 5th Annual Attleborough Amateur Boxing Club Awards 2014. It is always a great privilege to meet the squad and this year was no exception. The event was held at the Connaught Hall, where the great and the good, parents, friends, and relatives of the boxers, all gathered in anticipation of the outcome of the winners of each individual trophy.

Andy Durrant & Richard Caston He has just taken his assessments which test his boxing knowledge and how he performs tasks. Cinema This summer, we are launching SNYA Cinema in Wymondham. SNYA has been working with the Town Council and the youth provision providers that make up the ‘Wymondham Youth Project’ to complement the existing activities that are available to young people. The meetings are led by Inspector Carol Congreve from Norfolk Constabulary, in her capacity as chairman of the South Norfolk Youth Advisory Board. Our first meeting was to map out the aims of the group and for those present to explain the provision that they provide.

As part of the project SNYA established the ASHS Newsroom. Oliver Barnwell, former SNYA Member, took on the role as Editor and organised his team to post regular updates, photos and audio links to the event. You can visit his work at ASHS. SNYA.CO.UK Well done to all who were involved in the Cluster Arts Festival 2014! Your contribution was amazing and I hope that the experience has given you an insight into journalism and broadcasting. I know you will have a great time at your new schools or colleges.

Montage of the Attleborough Boxing Club Presentation Night to make Attleborough Boxing Club one of the best in the region.” She said, “That with the injection of new funds they would be able to help more young people to gain self-respect and become part of the team. From a Town’s point of view, it gives kids something to do so they are not ‘hanging around street corners’ and it will benefit children that need something to focus on.” Andy Durrant presented a cheque to the Club for £500, in memory of his son, Ryan, who died when he came off his

would be three- one and a half minute rounds and that he doesn’t look to score on points or to knock people out but to try to hit as hard and as fast as he can each time. Morgan Flynn was presented with the Lindenmayer/Loveday Cup for Clubman of the Year 2014. He told me that on his last time out he lost by just one point but was looking forward to a rematch at Kingfishers Boxing Club next season. Morgan has had three boxing matches, including a Skills Bout, a bout at Great Yarmouth and his last at Connaught Hall in March.

After visiting Wymondham High School Academy, for a discussion meeting with our SNYA members, we were able to establish an understanding of the existing activities and youth groups that are available. These included uniform groups, such as, fire cadets and scouts, martial arts and sports at the Wymondham Leisure Centre, drama groups, and the Youth Bus ‘drop in centre’ at Browick Park Recreation Ground. This park has youth shelters, a BMX track, a Skateboard Park, and sports areas. They described the groups of young people that would benefit from increased provision and some of the issues that affect the residents of Wymondham. SNYA members recommended an outdoor gym area, movie nights, drama workshops, a performance/ rehearsal venue for young bands, trips out and some way of engaging young people in sport where you do not have to buy all the kit. cont’d

10 WYMONDHAM cont’d We invited them and other Wymondham young people to the next meeting of the ‘Wymondham Youth Project’. Seven young people addressed the group, increasing the activities list to include a ‘Gaming Night’, (where young people compete against each other using Xbox and Play station), music nights and alterations to the existing skateboard park for the benefit of younger children. SNYA has joined Creative Arts East’s, Village Screen. They have provided projectionist training for us and some of our members have signed up for their ‘Somewhere to ……..’ project so they can benefit from marketing training. My team has visited community halls in Wymondham to check out the availability and to see if the premises are dark enough to show films. We have consulted with even more of Wymondham’s young people to establish where they are able to go to watch films and what films they would like to see.

August 2014

www.wymondhamonline.co.uk We are very excited about the project and hope to bring you the real cinema experience to rurally isolated towns and villages. We understand the needs of our young people and they have told us that they do not want a large plasma TV. Notwithstanding the limitations of a mobile Cinema project, I can assure you that we aim to bring you that ‘real cinema’ feel with a full screen, stereo sound and projection. You are able to purchase popcorn, pop and sweets but as community centres usually have those hard plastic chairs, we are encouraging all the young people to bring their own bean bags for extra comfort. SNYA is not competing with other cinemas but we are aiming to bring to you the latest films, after they have been shown at regular cinemas but before they are available on general release on DVD. Our target audience are those that have seen the movies before and want to enjoy them a second time with a different friendship group and those who are seeing the film for the first

time and want to take advantage of cheaper prices and do not want the additional cost of travelling to the City. Just like regular cinemas, we have a website that informs people what, where, and when the films are to be shown, booking in advance facilities to guarantee entry, and a loyalty card that entitles you to a 10% discount and a free portion of popcorn. Check out www.snyouthaction.org. uk/cinema for further information. SNYA are looking for other partners

How Do You Know If You Need To Replace Your Bed? Know the signs of an unhealthy matress and bedframe For most of us a third of our life is spent asleep, meaning the wear on our mattress over time is considerable, yet a staggering 25% of people wouldn’t consider changing their mattress – even after more than 10 years. It is hardly surprising then that 58% of the population complain of waking feeling stiff and achy. How do you know if you need to replace your bed? • Is your bed more than 7 years old? • Is it uncomfortable? Or when you sleep in someone else’s bed, does that feel better than your own? • Do you wake in the morning with a painful back or stiff limbs? • Can you feel the springs beneath the surface of the mattress? • Do you and your partner roll together? • Is your mattress just generally warn and discoloured? If you answered yes to one or more of these questions, then it could be time to invest in a new bed! The key with mattress buying is to try out as wide a variety of options as possible to find the most suitable mattress for you (and your partner). Given the amount of time you spend in bed, it is important to spend a reasonable amount of time in store trying out new ones, especially if you have been experiencing pains that could come from your existing mattress. It this instance, it may be worth having a chat with your chiropractor for some advice on what they advise is suitable for your back. At Sound Sleep, we stock a variety of brands and different types of mattresses, for example pocket sprung, memory foam, latex and so on. Each manufacturer has different mattresses that offer different levels of support and comfort. When mattress shopping, it is essential to ask for help. We are

August 2014

highly trained mattress specialists and are on hand to advise you, not to high pressure you in to buying something that may not be suitable. How do I know which one is right for me? A mattress that is supportive and comfortable is important, but remember, your requirement for support will differ depending on your weight and build. The best bed for your back is not always a firm one. You need a bed that will provide the right support and comfort for you. When laying on your side, ideally your spine should be parallel to the mattress and your spine should not sag down or bow up. Trying them out Give your self plenty of time and wear loose clothing, this helps you turn and get in and out of beds in store. Our Mattress Specialists will point you in the right direction. Try the advised mattresses for as long as possible to get a good ‘feel’ for them. Remember comfort is very subjective. Some people like the sensation of being cocooned in a bed; others prefer to lie on top of them. Back sleepers may like a firmer feel than those that like to sleep on their sides. There are lots of ‘feels’ in store, we are here to help you find what works best for you. If you sleep together, shop together Always shop with your partner, the bed must be suitable for both of you. As it is inevitable one of you may have to compromise! Size matters It is scientifically proven that couples sleep better in a bigger bed. The more space you have the freer you can move without disturbing your partner.

This is also a good idea if one or both of you get hot in bed. You should be able to lie side by side, with your arms behind your head and your elbows out, without touching each other. Did you know that two people sharing a standard sized double bed only have as much personal sleeping space as a baby in a cot?

Check your base It is always advisable to purchase a new mattress and divan base together, but not essential. Our mattress specialists will ask questions about your existing base, most bedsteads in good condition will be suitable for a new mattress. However, old divan bases, especially those that are sprung will more than likely need replacing as they could cause harm to your new mattress, in turn affecting the level of support that the new mattress will provide and could also invalidate manufacturers’ warranties and guarantees. Look for the NBF Mark of Approval For added reassurance that the bed you are buying is safe, clean and honest (meaning it is what it says it is) then look for the Approved logo which can be found on all beds at Sound Sleep. All members of the trade association, the National Bed Federation (NBF) must be independently audited to ensure they follow the procedures that comply with flammability, health

and hygiene and trade descriptions regulations. More info at www. bedfed.org.uk Now that you have chosen a new mattress, don’t forget that pillows are very important too. A cheap, unsupportive pillow can cause neck and back problems. These are just as important as your new mattress. For more help and advice, visit our in store Mattress Specialists who can talk you through all the pros and cons of various mattresses. We also pride ourselves on having the most up to date mattress technology as well as the old fashioned technology too!

Elmham Festival - August Bank Holiday Weekend 2014 Dereham has got it covered for your motorcyle needs If there was an awards ceremony for the friendliest of villages, then North Elmham in the heart of Norfolk would surely be amongst the nominations. The ruins have been there for over a millennium, there are woods and fields to wander round, two pubs offer you sustenance, and everyone says HELLO. It’s the kind of community that everyone yearns to be part of. And for all three days across the August Bank Holiday Weekend, you can be just that. For the last three decades, the residents of North Elmham have thrown open their village, so to speak. The community annual get-together is the traditional village festival. And there is an open invitation for everyone to come along and join in – the more the merrier. There is no admission charge and the ample car parking is free as well at NR20 5JU.

August 2014

The main attraction centres on the glorious flower arrangements in the magnificent St Mary’s parish church which draw thousands every year. This year’s theme is Saying it in Flowers…the art of communication’. Subjects from the telephone to pigeon post as well as naval flags, smoke signals and not forgetting the all-important weather forecast will be tackled by the team inventive and talented flower arrangers. Depending on the timing of your visit, you enjoy the bonus of being accompanied on your tour of the flowers by a gentle piano or organ recital. Accompanied climbs of the Church Tower are not for the faint-hearted. But it’s thoroughly recommended and well worth the effort for the fit and healthy who will be rewarded with spectacular views over rolling rural Norfolk. This year there is an opportunity for Teddy to try parachuting down.

This year’s memorabilia exhibition in the school concentrates on village life during the two world wars, and there is parking in the surgery car park opposite, so there is no need for that walk back up the hill. A huge tent jam-packed full of literary volumes rivals the best of that any major book shop can muster. Pick up the work that catches your eye and relax in a comfy armchair to flick the pages before making your offer to buy. Numerous craft and book stalls are run by villagers and their friends. A fair ground organ plays a repertoire of tunes old and new on Saturday afternoon. You can jump aboard the vintage bus for free rides on bank holiday Monday. Also on Monday morning, there is our massive annual Car Boot Sale. In between all those entertaining activities, you can rejuvenate yourselves

with a mouth-watering variety of refreshments served all day, every day. The homemade cakes are just too delicious to miss; but don’t take our word for it, come along and check them out for yourselves. So, drop in for an hour or stay all day. The choice is yours. It’s a truly community occasion and always a memorable weekend for all the villagers. And you can be part of the village too, no matter where you come from. All profits are used for the upkeep of our heritage church which is costly to maintain in good order, and to update its facilities to help keep it at the heart of the community where it belongs. All the exciting news will be posted at www.elmhamchurchgroupnorfolk. org.uk; for specific queries please call 01362 668435.

Unlike regular work surfaces, our material is made only a quarter of an inch (6.7mm) thick and is especially lightweight, so that it can be installed over existing worktops, without removing the original or needing extra underpinnings. That means it can also be laid over bathroom tiles or fitted onto walls as a shower liner or decorative finish.

We offer practical and affordable, luxury surfaces that look stunning and add style and value to your home. Around a million customers worldwide have put their faith in our products and taken advantage of our outstanding lifetime warranty on worktop materials. That is why ‘the top that fits on top’ continues to stay on top.

The diamond-polished surface needs no special cleaning or routine maintenance and can be kept sparkling clean, by wiping over with a damp cloth.

To fully appreciate the benefits of a Granite Transformations makeover and the quality of our craftsmanship, do come and visit our showroom in Stratton Strawless just outside Norwich. We are your local kitchen makeover experts, fitting bespoke worktops directly over your existing work surfaces, so there is no mess or hassle, and provide kitchen door replacement to complete the look.

Everyday spills and stains can be removed easily and there’s little risk of damage from knocks, cuts, abrasion and burns. All of our products undergo extensive performance testing and are produced to strict quality standards, using a high proportion of recycled raw materials.

As well as updating existing kitchens or bathrooms, we can also help you with new fitted layouts. We offer a no-obligation design service, where we will bring the full range of worktop and door colours for you to choose from, in the comfort of your own home.

How air source heat pumps work.. An ASHP works like an fridge in reverse, it takes heat from the air outside and concentrates it to create heat for your home. You then add this heat into your homes central heating system, or hot water system to provide a more economic source of heat than traditional boilers.

Air source heat pumps can also be used to power an under floor heating system. They should be very low maintenance once they are installed. Its similar idea to Ground Source Heat Pumps but simpler and cheaper to install. An ASHP will deliver a lower temperature than a traditional boiler but provide that heat constantly. There are two types of Air Source Heat Pumps • Air to air systems - Produces warm air that you distribute through your home with fans. • Air to water systems - Produces warm air that you distribute through the water in your central heating or hot water system.

The payback does vary, ASHP can be especially beneficial when replacing electrical or oil heating. it’s essential that your home is insulated and draughtproofed well for the heating system to be effective. It would be silly to install an ASHP system if have not sorted out excessive draughts. Its also important to match the heat pump to your home to make sure it has the capacity to cope across the range of temperature your home is likely to experience. You don’t want it to struggle in a cold snap whilst not over cycling in more normal conditions. Not sure if Air Source Heat Pumps are suitable for you? Gooderstone Water Gardens & Nature Trail A unique attraction for all garden lovers, naturalists, artists and photographers - or those who simply want a restful break What could be nicer than to stroll through an enchanting garden, explore the nature trail, perhaps spot a kingfisher and enjoy delicious home made cakes. Billy Knights, a retired farmer began designing and creating the Water Gardens in 1970 in his 70th year. The site was a damp meadow which became too wet for cattle to graze. Mr Knights’ son jokingly suggested he should have a water garden, which prompted him to draw out plans (on the back of a piece of wallpaper) and he soon had machines digging out the ponds and waterways. He worked on his garden with love and enthusiasm until he died aged 93. For over 20 years the gardens had been open to the public. Both Billy and his wife Florence loved their gardens and sharing them with others. With this in mind and as a tribute to her parents Coral Hoyos

Keeping Fit!

Manorcourt Daycare

Even in older age, fitness is very important. Check out a few ways that you can look after yourself.

...is a community based 7 hour care centre; it is set in a detached building within the village location of Griston close to the market town of Watton, in the Breckland district of Norfolk.

Looking to try a different way to keep fit, but don’t know your Gyrotonic from your Tai Chi? We lead you through some of the most popular exercise classes. Aerobic and step classes PRO: Great for beginners and the more advanced CON: Watch out for muscle strain. Warm up and down properly Aerobics classes, which are generally a high or low-impact workout to set music, allow you to exercise at your own level to improve your cardiovascular fitness and flexibility. Step classes burn calories quickly and help to tone the lower part of your body as you go up and down the step in front of you. The higher you have the step, the harder it is. Aqua aerobics is the same as aerobics, albeit in the shallow end of the pool. As your body weight is supported by the water, the impact is reduced, so it’s ideal for those with joint problems, exercise newcomers or those who are overweight. Pilates PRO: Increases flexibility, circulation and balance CON: Not for those with chronic injuries and no subsitiute for general cardiovascular exercise. Founded by Joseph Pilates in 1880 as a way to strengthen his body after a childhood beset by illness, Pilates is a form of strength and flexibility training open to anyone, no matter how fit they are. Helping to promote physical and mental wellbeing it’s also a huge aid for physical awareness, improving posture, circulation and balance. By training the core abdominal and back muscles, it helps to stabilise your torso and allows your entire body to move freely. For people who are more sedentary than most, Pilates is a gentle, non-impact exercise. Yoga PRO: A holistic workout, it benefits both your body and mind CON: To get maximum benefits you’ll need to be dedicated Most yoga styles are rooted in Hatha yoga, which focuses on developing

August 2014

control through different poses. Viniyoga (also known as vinyasa) is probably the most gentle form of yoga, focusing on co-ordinating breathing with movement. Increasingly used for injury rehabilitation, it’s an excellent choice for beginners. A similarly gentle choice is Kundalini yoga. For those after a more rigorous workout there’s always Bikram yoga, in which the room is heated to anything between 85°F and 100°F. Be warned though, it’s hard work. The same goes for Ashtanga yoga, which offers a fast-paced series of sequential poses. Physically demanding, it builds strength, flexibility and stamina as you move from one posture to another in a continual flow, linking the movements to your breathing. Gyrotonic PRO: Excellent for injury rehab and those with back pain CON: Classes an be costly and hard to find A favourite of Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow, Gyrotonic is a cross between swimming, ballet, gymnastics, Pilates and yoga. The Gyrotonic Expansion system uses rotating discs and weighted pulleys to create variable resistance via ropes and straps. The machines work the muscles and ligaments in circular fluid movements and help to stretch and strengthen the muscles. Gyrotonic originated as a form of rehabilitation and the low-impact rhythmic movements can be beneficial for those with arthritis, back pain or those recovering from an injury. For more information on these methods of keeping fit and active, visit the Age UK website: www.ageuk.org.uk and follow the links through to the health and wellbeing section. This will give you a range of hintsand tips, not just about fitness, but healthy eating and much, much more.

South Norfolk Mobility Break In - Thieves Ransack Premises Leaving Owner Devastated Premises vandalised and valuable scooters stolen South Norfolk Mobility feature regularly in Dispatch Magazine’s advertising sections and we were shocked when we heard that they had been broken in to, so we would like you to help us help them. The premises at Snetterton were broken into on Wednesday 9th July between 9 and 11pm When business director Michael Lockwood arrived to open up the next day, he found that the back door had been smashed open and some of the mobility scooters in his stockroom had been stolen. The burglars had also managed to get into an office area where they vandalised the filing cabinets to find keys for the scooters. The CCTV system hard drive was stolen by the raiders to prevent evidence of their crime being retrieved. A van had been stolen from a business next-door to load up the scooters and make the getaway. MOTORING Review REVIEW 33

Hyundai Santa Fe Premium 4WD 7-Seat 2.2 CRDi An economical SUV with 4x4 credentials The South Koreans have become skilled at making you feel in safe hands when it comes to car production. From the satisfying ‘thunk’ the Santa Fe’s doors make when you close them to the muffled diesel rattle on start up, you soon realise the Hyundai is made of stern stuff.

downhill brake control and hill start assist. As well as the occasional dirt track excursion, the Santa Fe will help you out with, say, caravanning adventures for the whole family. It has an impressive towing capacity of 2,600kg (braked) and, to make life easier, trailer stability assist is part of the gadgetry get-up too.

For an SUV with 4x4 credentials it’s fairly economical, returning an average 41.5mpg. It’s an especially comfortable and spacious motor too; it’ll seat five adults and there’s room for two extra little people in the third row of fold-away seats. The sizeable boot is square and low, meaning it’s a doddle to load up. In fact, it’s a perfect family-cum-business vehicle. For a biggish car the latest Santa Fe is surprisingly easy to weave through city streets and it will happily tour at 70mph on the motorway all day. The steering is direct and well weighted at all speeds - and there’s only the slightest body roll on bends, but that’s acceptable, given its lofty structure. The gutsy 2.2-litre 194bhp turbo diesel engine comes with a smooth-changing six-speed automatic gearbox, which helps

PROS ‘N’ CONS • • • • • make the motor more than capable of punchy overtaking manoeuvres. In truth, you can have fun if you detour from the straights and take on the twisty country lanes. Of course, being able to cope with a bite of bona fide bucolic driving is how this Hyundai explains its steep price-tag. With its elevated height, four-wheel-drive and robust body, the handsome Santa Fe Premium has much in its favour to

handle the road less travelled. It’s no hardcore mud-plugger but it has the toehold of a traditional 4x4 and the manners of a normal car, while a high level of kit adds more than a splash of splendour.
