In The Swim With The Lions Two of the wining teams at this year’s Lions Charity Swim have been presented with their medals by Lion President John Wilde. Tacolneston Tigers, of the village’s primary school, raised a magnificent £292, the most in the under 11 section, receiving their medals in a school assembly. Pictured are 5 of the team with Lion President John. A cheque of £50 was given to senior teacher Mrs Tina Douglas to go to a charity of the team’s choice. The Tigers have chosen Star Throwers of Wymondham to be the recipients. The 4th Wymondham Guides team won the trophy for swimming the furthest overall with a very impressive 172 lengths in their allotted 50 minutes. Their presentation took place at a guides meeting in their Kimberly Street headquarters. Their £50 cheque will go in the Guides Charity fund towards a new gazebo. Pictured with the 6 guides and Lion President John receiving

the cheque is Guide Leader Fran Young. Lion President John said that it is sad fact that youngsters today often receive a bad press so he is delighted that so many come together and work so hard in the charity swim each year to help others. This year’s swim is on course to raise £2,000 for NARS and SERV (who help the NHS in emergency

situations) and it has been local children who have raised a major part of that amount. Wymondham Lions can now be found on Twitter (@Wymondhamlions), Facebook and Linkedin (WymondhamLions), on the web at: http://www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/ wymondham/ and can be emailed at Wymondhamlions@Gmail.com.

They welcome visitors to their meetings and events and are always on the lookout for people to help out at their fund raising functions. Details can be found on their website.

Ball A Great Success

...recently held the first of a number of studio lighting workshops at Long Stratton Village Hall.

Over 50 people were wined and dined in style then danced until midnight in a charitable start to the festive season.

Wymondham Lions hosted a very successful Community Christmas Ball, sponsored by Fosters, in the function room of The Dell Bowls Club.

The workshops enable club members to learn how to set up and use professional lighting equipment and give them the opportunity to photograph a variety of models.

to supplement the club’s midweek meetings, with other recently covered subjects including image processing and audio visual presentations.

The lighting workshops have been made possible by the club’s recent acquisition of a new studio setup.

For more details about the club you can visit its website at www.bdcameraclub.co.uk.

Many of Wymondham’s businesses community attended along with a family of four who travelled all the way from Northampton to Wymondham for the dance having seen it advertised on the web.

These studio sessions form part of a wider programme of weekend workshops held throughout the year

Photographed below are club members James Armes and Ian Anderson with model Emma.

Lion President John Wilde said, “the ball was conceived as a community event in the run up to the town’s

January 2013

lights switch on and annual Christmas Fayre and had been a great success. Everyone enjoyed it and asked for the date of next year’s ball. Judging by their enthusiasm and promises to bring friends we may need to find a larger venue!” The event was organised by a small committee led by Fran Young and the catering was supervised by Tony Holden of JPs on Norwich Road. The evening raised over £500 for the Lions Charity Account and all of it will be used for good causes.

A Look At Buy To Lets.....

Norfolk & Suffolk Power Flushing

Making sure you have adequate Landlords Insurance is essential, as a buy to let property is a substantial investment.

Any of these symptoms in my advert could indicate that your central heating system has problems from internal corrosion, rust, sludge and scale.

Priory Insurance Brokers specialise in arranging insurance cover for all types of property from Blocks of Flats to standard Private Dwelling Houses. We deal with many leading UK Insurers and Lloyds Underwriters to provide the best possible quotation and cover for our clients, regardless of the risk. Being totally independent means we are not tied to a single provider and this allows us access to a range of insurance policies from our panel of carefully selected Insurers. Our trained and experienced staff members are able to find the most suitable policy for your specific requirements.

In addition to cover on Buildings, policies can be extended to include: • Property Owners Liability • Loss of Rent cover following an insured Peril • Accidental Damage Cover • Cover for Landlords Contents With no Call Centres, you can be assured of a personal and friendly approach by our fully trained staff.

A power flush can restore circulation and efficiency to your central heating system by removing these products. The process involves connecting a power flushing pump to the existing central heating pump valves, or across the tails of a radiator. Specialist chemicals are then pumped around the heating system to loosen and mobilise the unwanted debris.

Each radiator is then individually flushed until clean and on completion, an inhibitor is added to prevent further corrosion. The whole process is carried out with minimal disturbance and disruption. For more information or for a free no obligation quote, ring Paul on (01508) 532671 or 07879 414197. Or alternatively go to www.suffolkpowerflushing.co.uk.

We will help you to find the best policy at the best price for your individual needs. For more information or advice, please feel free to call in to our Wymondham Office.

Hearing Loss Treatment: Anglia Computer The Sooner the Better Solutions By Karen Finch, Audiologist and Managing Director of The Hearing Care Centre

Its Sale Season!

One in six people in the UK has a hearing loss. This doesn’t mean that the day we turn 60, we wake up in the morning and can’t hear. The process is usually gradual and progressive.

Here at Anglia Computer Solutions Ltd we have January offers and deals across our range. Looking for a new or reconditioned PC or laptop? We will have something for you.

a Free Black ink with a multipack and 3 for 2’s on selected ranges.

We have laptops spanning across the £129 - £699 price range.

We have lots of options to kick start your business from sprucing up your website to getting it higher on Google with our enhanced SEO package.

When it comes to age-related hearing loss, it may not always be preventable. However, not waiting too long before getting tested and - in case of need - getting fitted with hearing aids sooner rather than later, is a very smart move. Just like our joints and muscles, the use-it or lose-it principle applies to our hearing. Understanding hearing loss and treatment options, such as hearing aids, can assure you don’t lose it before it is too late. Even if you are one of those people who insist they hear just fine, thank you,

there is no harm (and a lot of benefit) in having your hearing checked. One of the many good reasons to get your hearing checked sooner rather than later is this: undetected and untreated hearing loss can diminish your quality of life by making it difficult to communicate and interact with people around you - be it at work or in family and social situations. On the other hand, treating hearing loss as early as possible, before it starts to impact your emotional, psychological and social well-being, can improve your communication and language skills, allowing you to fully participate in all the leisure and work activities.

Choose from Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8, our machines can be modified to your personal preference. Prefer a desktop PC? We have the same great offers on these, prices start from £49 and go up to £899 for the gaming enthusiasts.

So don’t wait until you have to cup your ear to hear people around you.

Again pick which operating system you prefer.

Book a hearing test and, if needed, treated with some of today’s fantastic digital hearing aids.

Stock up on your inks, throughout January we are doing offers on our Jettec range of ink cartridges, including

A Beautiful Garden

Is Your Adviser Independent?

In Time for Spring.

From 31st December 2012, there are changes afoot for the financial services industry that have been brought about by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) Retail Distribution Review (RDR) and every financial adviser will have to be classified as independent or restricted. Firms that provide independent advice must make recommendations based on a ‘comprehensive and fair analysis of the relevant market’ and provide ‘unbiased and unrestricted’ advice. Firms that cannot fully meet these requirements will be deemed to be offering restricted advice.

If you are considering having your garden professionally landscaped in time for Spring, why not choose a reputable company that has the widest range of landscaping materials available at their fingertips - and at the best prices. At Georgina Read Design & Landscaping we specialise in transforming gardens and our flexible approach means we can always meet your requirements for all aspects of hard- landscaping. As we are also the driving force behind Paving Superstore (www.pavingsuperstore.co.uk) and Anglian Garden & Building Supplies (www.gardenandbuilding.co.uk), both selling huge volumes of hard landscaping materials across the UK, including paving from Marshalls, Bradstone, Brett, Stonemarket, Pavestone, Global Stone, Strata and Natural Paving, decorative stone, sheds, summerhouses, log cabins, garden features, hot tubs, pergolas,

fencing, water features and lots more, you can be sure all our materials are at online prices, offering great savings AND the best choice! So why not let our RHS award-winning, fully qualified landscaping professionals encompass your needs by creating a garden to match your lifestyle - whether you prefer modern and contemporary or timeless and traditional, we can fulfil your requirements. Free Quotes Fully Insured References Available Contact us today on 01953 850802 to discuss your Landscaping Requirements See examples of our work at: www.georginaread.co.uk

We believe that being independent should give our clients a better chance of getting the most suitable product for them, from the most suitable company. We are currently independent financial advisers and from next year we will remain independent financial advisers. One of the other changes brought about by RDR is that all advisers will have to have an enhanced minimum level of qualification. This higher level of qualification and the changes by RDR may result in several advisers leaving the industry and the high

street banks are having to rethink whether they will continue to offer financial advice to their customers. At ML Financial Associates all the advisers belong to the financial services professional body - the Personal Finance Society (PFS). We also adhere to the Chartered Insurance Institute code of ethics. Yes we are independent and will remain independent and all our advisers DO already have the enhanced qualifications. We feel these matters are important to give our clients the most suitable advice, with products from the entire market. Ask your adviser if they are ready with all the changes and enhanced qualifications, if not please talk to us. DEREHAM 13

Rights Of Way And Their Extent It is common for rights of way over property to be reserved if the seller retains other land in the vicinity of the sold land to which he wishes to gain access. A recent Court of Appeal case clarifies and restates the principle that such a right of way can only be exercised for the benefit of the land which it was originally stated to benefit and that it cannot be used to gain access to other land. The case in question concerned a long-running dispute between two neighbouring landowners in Northamptonshire. Mr Giles owned a farmhouse and buildings and a driveway leading to them. The fields on either side of the driveway, which were known as the Paddock, were owned by Mr Tarry, who had been granted a right of way over the driveway in order to gain access to them. Relations between Mr Giles and Mr Tarry were clearly always difficult and it was said that a state of virtual war

existed between the two men. Court proceedings were originally started in 1993 and there have been numerous disputes over the years, culminating in their appearance in the Court of Appeal in 2012. The cause of part of the present dispute was Mr Tarry’s wish to graze his sheep on land adjoining the Paddock. He was aware that he had no right of way over the driveway for the purpose of herding his sheep along it and into the Paddock in order to gain access to the adjacent grazing land. To do so would be unlawful as the right of way was not granted for the benefit of the adjacent land. Mr Tarry and his family decided to try to circumvent this difficulty by herding the sheep along the driveway, onto the Paddock and then out onto a public highway.

Then, after a brief pause, they drove the sheep from the public highway back onto the Paddock, whence the sheep were free to wander onto and graze on the adjoining land. Mr Tarry argued that as the sheep had not entered the grazing land via the driveway, such use of the right of way was permissible.

land other than the Paddock. Such use was not deemed permissible and he could no longer exercise the right of way in this manner. HV&A can assist you in resolving problems arising when neighbours misuse rights of way or abuse covenants attaching to your land.

His argument was upheld by the County Court. Mr Giles appealed and the Court of Appeal reversed the decision of the lower court, stating that what was important in cases of this nature was the substance and intention of the user of the right of way. Driving the sheep out onto the public highway before re-entering the Paddock was, in the Court’s view, ‘a somewhat artificial device’ and the true substance and intention was for Mr Tarry to use the right of way to access

Apprenticeship Scheme For Watton There are two reasons why 1966 was a memorable year for me. The first you can probably guess because it was the year that England won the World Cup. The second however is more personal; I failed the 11+ exam. It was an act of protest, intended to annoy a very pushy parent. But that act of rebellion meant I was written off by the education system and sent to a mediocre secondary modern school. From the moment I walked in the building I realised that this was a school for failures. We were there to be kept out of mischief, off the streets and prepared for a life of work. It was assumed that we would not achieve and so any ambition was quickly quelled. I only started learning when I started earning. I could see the relevance to learning things that would help me grow my career. Of course I also had to work hard to overcome the self-limiting beliefs and crushing lack of self-esteem my childhood had left me with. Now in middle age I am considered by many to be a high achiever.

I have an IQ of 155 and currently writing my 17th book. I have started and sold companies, campaigned for the establishment of Norfolk Community Foundation, now the county’s largest local grant maker and speak at conferences around the UK. I describe myself today as an author and social entrepreneur.

This is how it works:

Which brings me to the purpose of this article: You see I know that not everybody is cut out for an academic education. Not everybody wants to go to University, incur significant debt and have no guarantee of job on graduation. I also know from working for more than 20 years in the small business world, that the most rewarding jobs are usually those with a small business.

• We find apprenticeship qualification that meet the needs of the businesses and match the interests of the youngsters - most will be 16-17yrs old;

So I have found a way to make it easy for small businesses and young people to connect and create those jobs. Apprenticeships have been around for a long time and have probably changed dramatically since you last thought about them.

NEW YEAR NEW YOU 15

Eye Brows… Do You Make The Most Of Them? Often a neglected area of many a woman’s beauty regime. Some have over-plucked for years and have little brow left – others just don’t bother tending to their brows and end up with a mono-brow. Then there’s the girls who simply ignore their brows, choosing instead to try and hide them under a thick fringe. With eyebrows being hot news, it’s time to tame, tease and tint to make the most of them. They are the focal point of your face and therefore should always be perfectly preened to accentuate your features. Ideally this should be done by the professionals for best possible results. HD Brows are latest ‘wow brow’ involves a seven-step procedure where, after a shape consultation, the therapist uses a mixture of techniques including threading, tweezing, plucking and tinting to perfect and define your brows. The results are incredible and instantly lift your face and highlight your cheekbones.

But what makes HD Brows so special and superior to other methods? “Having the right shape is everything, so it is important sometimes to take the time to nurture the brows into their ideal shape. “With the party season coming up, more people are asking for power brows - a darker, fuller, stronger, more defined look.” Of course, the full-on power brow isn’t for everyone, and may be a little too dark and bold for your colourings or taste, but the HD Brow service can be tailored to your needs. The therapist can use a lighter tint to suit paler complexions, or blondes who want a less extreme look. So you can still have the high-definition brow look, but with a more delicate finish. If you’re a blonde who likes to make a statement, go for the full-on bold brow. HD Brows last for about six weeks, depending on your hair growth.

Home maintenance is minimal, and there is little upkeep between visits to the salon.

Before

If you want to try it at home yourself, there are some basic rules you should follow to avoid a plucking disaster. Firstly, use a liner or brow shadow to fill in any gaps you may have from over plucking. Then lightly and delicately shade in the affected areas. Remember to do a little at a time and always soften and blend. Every now and then, step back and look at both eyebrows in a big mirror to ensure an even finish. You can try Benefit’s Instant Brow Pencil (£14.50), or Rimmel’s Professional Eyebrow Pencil (£2.99), or ‘Christian eyebrow’ £26.00 from Izabelle Hammond

16 ENERGY FEATURE

www.DispatchMagazine.co.uk

Did You Know, The Cost Of Energy Bills Have Soared By 140% In The Last Eight Years! The cost of household energy has risen seven times faster than household income since 2004, according to a recent study. The high costs are now the top household worry for Britons, ahead of the rising cost of food and mortgage payments. While the average UK household income has increased by 20% from £32,812 in 2004 to £39,468 today, the average energy bill has risen by 140%. Households were spending an average of £522 a year for their energy in 2004, but now pay £1,252 a year - 3.2% of income or double the 1.6% of eight years ago. The study found 83% of people believe that rising energy bills have had an impact on their disposable income, with 17% of these reporting that they no longer have any disposable income as a result and 27% saying energy bills have reduced their disposable income dramatically. Director of consumer policy at uSwitch.com Ann Robinson said: “This is the cold reality facing households today; in less than 10 years our energy bills have rocketed by 140%. The break-neck speed at which energy prices have sprinted upwards has caught many people unawares. Consumers are still playing catch-up. “Energy now accounts for a significant slice of household income which is why the numbers rationing their energy use have risen so steeply in recent years. But going cold or without is a short-term and potentially harmful fix and not a long-term solution.” So what can be done to reduce your household bills? You can control how much you spend on energy by making your home more energy-efficient and paying less for the energy you do use by moving to a competitively-priced energy plan. The Consumer magazine Which? has awarded Utility Warehouse with the best energy supplier award for the past 5 years. The survey looked at customer service, value for money and accuracy of bills, so perhaps this is a good starting point. The other great advantage of Utility Warehouse is they have a team of local authorised distributors who can conduct a FREE energy review. This will give you an immediate indication of what you are paying against what savings can be made, and as well as being completely free, it only takes around 15 mins. Savings can be made, you just need to put it into action. Call me now and let’s see how much you could reduce your energy bills by. Jonathan - 07802 690589

What will the cost of childcare be and what does this include? For example nappies, meals, holiday charges etc.

Was it friendly, relaxed and informative? Did your child enjoy it? 2. Your local family information service will keep an up-to-date list of registered providers. The local authority switchboard will have the telephone number or visit www.childcarefinder. 3. Look for your nearest NDNA member nursery at www.ndna.org.uk. 4. Caring For A Loved One With Dementia... According to the Alzheimer’s Research Trust, there were about 820,000 people with dementia in the UK last year. The illness affects both men and women and while it mainly affects older people, there are 15,000 people in the UK under the age of 65 who have it. Dementia describes a range of symptoms including memory loss, problems with reasoning and communication skills and a reduction in a person’s ability to carry out daily activities. Types of dementia vary from mild cognitive impairment (where the person has memory problems) through Alzheimer’s disease (the most commonly diagnosed type of dementia) and vascular dementia, where the reduction in skills/abilities is more marked, to frontal lobe dementia (personality changes) and Lewy Bodies (hallucinatory experiences). Later stage dementia care is a particular area of care that is sadly lacking throughout many UK care homes.

Kingsley Healthcare are a mid-sized East Anglia-based organisation, providing quality Residential, Nursing, Respite and Learning Disabilities care support and they are now making this a specialism in their personcentred approach to dementia care, throughout their homes, for individuals in their twilight years. Mandy Masters is the Operations Director for Dementia Care & Specialist Services at Kingsley. She says, “Over the past two years we have been working tirelessly to make person-centred care a natural part of every day in our care homes and embed this into the culture. Our approach to dementia care has produced a huge improvement in people’s wellbeing across the Kingsley Healthcare Group.

support teams to go about their everyday work. The routine and task focus of the day is completely removed and every day we just let the day unfold, this creates a wonderful place for people to live and work together. We are really making a difference and seeing this work, by giving individuals the chance to thrive as well as giving the support teams the chance to develop the specialist skills they need.”

She continues, “Person-centred care can be achieved by changing the way we

Healthy Aging Tips How to feel young and live life to the fullest. Healthy aging is about much more than staying physically healthy-it’s about maintaining your sense of purpose and your zest for life.

If you’re not sure where to get started, try some of the following suggestions:

As we grow older, we experience an increasing number of major life changes, including retirement, the loss of loved ones, and physical changes. How we handle these changes, as well as regular dayto-day stresses, is the key to aging well. With these tips for healthy aging, you can live with meaning and joy throughout your senior years. A key ingredient in the recipe for healthy aging is the continuing ability to find meaning and joy in life. As you age, your life will change and you will lose things that previously occupied your time and gave your life purpose.

• Play with your grandchildren or a favorite pet

For example, you may retire from your career or your children may move far away. But this is not a time to stop moving forward. Later life can be a time of exciting new adventures if you let it. Everyone has different ways of experiencing meaning and joy, and the activities you enjoy may change over time.

• Pick up a long-neglected hobby

• Learn something new (an instrument, a foreign language, a new game) • Get involved in your community (volunteer or attend a local event) • Take a class or join a club • Go on a weekend trip to a place you’ve never visited • Spend time in nature (take a walk, go fishing, enjoy a scenic view) The possibilities are endless. The important thing is to find activities that are both meaningful and enjoyable. Whatever your preference, taking time to nourish your spirit is never wasted.

Peugeot 208 Feline 1.6 THP 3dr By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist. “APART FROM track days where do you get as much fun”? That’s kind of what my brain kept repeating each time I got behind the wheel of this fun supermini. Everything about the new Peugeot 208 is so exciting - right from the tiny, sporty steering wheel to the grip the car has around corners. I really feel Peugeot is back on track with its contribution to the hot-hatch market. Way back in the 205 GTI days the French car maker had that particular market sewn up – and the 205 was, and still is, an icon in the motoring world. The 208 will become a legend too; no doubt about it. It has the looks, feel and performance of a true supermini as well as all the safety gadgetry you need for modern day motoring. My test car looked superb cloaked in a Spirit Grey paintjob combined with a black and grey leather effect interior trim. Its 17 inch alloys looked fat against its diminutive but muscular body and its rear spoiler and double chrome tailpipes looked ‘the dog’s’. On starting the engine, the 1598 cc engine sounds promising, and once you engage first gear and take off, you know this car is not your usual little motor. For a start,

the gearshifts feel precise and sporty and the car is eager - it’s like a dog straining at its leash until it can find an open stretch. Then, when you do find a suitable uncluttered bit of road, you can set the 208 free. That’s when it sits back on its haunches for a moment before launching into a blistering attack on the asphalt. The 156 bhp is certainly apparent and the 0-62 mph comes in 8.1 seconds, climbing where legal, (German autobahns calling?) to 134 mph. Available in both three and five door body style variants, the 208 is certainly the embodiment of an exciting new direction for Peugeot. No surprise then that there has been an incredible and positive response to the new 208, illustrated by over 7,500 orders so far. It really has been a tremendous start for the car, as it was also named ‘Best Supermini’ at the Auto Express Awards during the first week of launch. The 208 also obtained five stars from Euro NCAP, certifying its safety credentials, and was the first car in its segment to achieve this following the introduction of more demanding review criteria. So, if you still want hatchback practicality but you are also after a uniquely intuitive and pleasurable driving experience, stop off at your local Peugeot dealer and take a test drive. You won’t be disappointed.

Winter Family Car Safety Here is everything you need to know about travelling in the car with your little ones this winter: Getting Your Family Ready 1. Make sure your car seats are fitted correctly so that your children will be as safe and comfortable as possible. This should include checking that the harness and headrest is at the right height for your child. 2. Pack the car the night before, so if you are leaving early in the morning, you just have to pop in the kids, the change bag and a couple of favourite teddy bears and you are good to go! 3. Make sure you have extra drinks for the children and a flask of hot coffee / milk for unexpected delays. 4. Make sure your mobile is fully charged if you need to keep in touch with family or friends whilst on the move. 5. Have an empty plastic bag to store all the rubbish which accumulates during a long car journey - think banana skins, discarded chocolate wrappers, used baby wipes. A bag is also handy if there is an unexpected bout of travel sickness. 6. Best in-car munchies? Dried fruit, cheese sticks and the more chewy, less crumbly of the cereal bars. 7. Make sure you have a good collection of DVD’s that suit all the children for when they are allowed screen time! 8. If you have boys, make sure you have a couple of empty bottles if they need an emergency wee!

Make sure you have an ice scraper or de-icer, some extra windscreen washer fluid and plenty of fuel in the car! There is nothing worse than stopping 10 minutes into your journey with children to fill the car up, especially if you are travelling at night. Give your car a small maintenance check, looking at tyre pressure, windscreen washer fluid, water and oil levels. Make sure these are all topped up before you start your journey. 18. It is no myth, when children hit a certain age, rather than simply cry, they constantly moan ‘are we nearly there yet?’ Keep a mental note of some good ‘in car’ games to while away the boredom that always hits on long car journeys.

13. Pack some blankets and have hats and gloves ready should you need them at a moment’s notice. 14. If going on a journey that is likely to last longer than two hours, make sure you plan a stop as newborn babies should not be in car seats for longer than two hours at any one time. Research has proven that if in seated position for long periods of time it could lead to restrictions in airways and hinder spinal development.
