Anglia Computer Solutions

J & S Homeworks

Anglia Computer Solutions has branches in Swaffham, Downham Market and Wymondham. At Anglia Computer Solutions we cover everything and anything computer related.

The wintry weather can cause damage to your gutters, which in turn can cause damp patches on the external walls. Felt could also be damaged and water may be getting into your loft. If you detect any of these faults, give J & S Homeworks a call.

J & S Homeworks can bring your UPVC back to its original condition again. Our Fascia and Soffit Cleaning service really can make a difference to the look and feel of your property’s exterior and help to keep it in good condition.

Gutters can easily become blocked by leaves, feathers, dirt and debris blown into them. Once a gutter becomes blocked, rainwater will flow directly off the roof onto the walls and windows of your home, as well as onto access paths. Seriously neglected gutters often have weeds growing in them, adding to the problem.

Call Jason of J & S Homeworks on 01953 458087 or 07747 847606 for a free no obligation quote.

We are expecting another big shipment of reconditioned laptops from £149. We also have Factory Refurbished Windows 7 laptops coming in on a daily basis. This gives us a massive range of New, Factory Refurbished & Used PC’s, Laptops & Netbooks. FREE DATA TRANSFER FROM YOUR OLD PC \ LAPTOP TO NEW!! Unfortunately computers do go down, whether it’s due to viruses and spyware, old age or things like electrical storms. We are here to help! Often these kinds of problems can be solved quickly, either by replacing key components or solving any software problems - it’s always recommended to get a quote for a repair before just going out and buying a completely new unit. Laptops are becoming increasingly popular and although they are a bit more

6 Dispatch January 2011

of a challenge to repair we cover all aspects of them. Whether the unit won’t turn on right through to keyboard, power connector and screen replacements. If it’s a problem which cannot be fixed in store, or it’s just too inconvenient to bring in – then we will come to you. Our callouts are £39.99 which includes travelling and labour. We cover both homes and businesses whether it’s setting up wireless broadband for personal use or twenty computers in an office. We keep in a wide range of Ink cartridges, cables, hardware components and peripherals in stock all ready to go, and if we don’t have what you need then they can often be ordered for the next day.

Once the snow has thawed are your gutters blocked & overflowing? Check round your property for damage.

Water constantly overflowing from blocked gutters damages bricks and mortar and can cause extensive damp on the outside and mould on the inside of your house as it is absorbed by the bricks, making even the most beautiful of homes appear unsightly.

The cleaning products we use are specifically designed to effectively and thoroughly clean exterior surfaces.

Local History Brought To Life In New Play

Any of these symptoms in my advert could indicate that your central heating system had problems from internal corrosion, rust, sludge and scale.

The process involves connecting a power flushing pump to the existing central heating pump valves, or across the tails of a radiator.

The stormy relation between Sir John Boileau Bart of Ketteringham Hall and the Reverend William Wayte Andrew was explored in a brilliantly crafted play by Richard Crawley, called “Resurrection Jack”, which had its premiere in Wymondham at the end of November. Snow and ice did not deter audiences from attending the two-night event entitled “Ketteringham Kapers – A Victorian Saga” at the town’s Fairland Hall. This included some direct descendants of people who lived in the village during the period covered by the play (the mid-1800s). The original play was introduced by a scene-setting illustrated talk by Mary Parker, churchwarden at Ketteringham and an acknowledged authority on the Boileau family.

A spokesperson for Four by Four said: “Our group was set up to enable new plays to reach a wider audience and the colourful relationship between Sir John and the Reverend Andrew seemed an ideal topic to explore”. *The next Four by Four production will be four short plays under the collective title of “Cottage Cheese”. They will be performed on 18th and 19th March 2011 at Wymondham High School Studio Theatre. For more information about the group contact Tony Vale on 01953 605434.

How To Make Your New Unique Building Year’s Resolution Stick Supplies New Year’s resolutions can be both troublesome and rewarding. Coming up with your New Year’s resolutions is the easy part, and many people make them, but few make a real commitment to them.

Unique Building Supplies (Norfolk) Ltd are pleased to announce the opening of our new kitchen and bathroom showroom.

So What’s The Secret To Making And Keeping Your New Year’s Resolution?

Since opening the new depot at Eleven Mile Lane, Suton in May our collection trade has grown tremendously. With the opening of the branch on a Saturday morning since early summer Unique has been a regular call for both trade and public who require anything in the building line from plumbing to DIY.

1. Be very specific about your resolution. Don’t say: “I want to lose weight.” Do say: “I want to lose 4 pounds a month.” Make realistic, measurable goals and write them down. 2. Limit the number of resolutions you make. It is better to do one thing well than several things poorly or not at all. 3. Post your list in a visible place to act as a reminder and encouragement to yourself. 4. Enlist the support of your friends and family. They may also have similar goals to you and you can work on your resolutions together. 5. Take action immediately.

10 Dispatch January 2011

6. Take things step by step. Your New Year’s resolutions will take time before you actually reach it. Rather than just focusing on your big goal, start working on smaller goals. It can work as a ladder that you will climb up so that you can reach it, the little successes will help to keep you motivated. 7. Substitute a good habit for the bad one you want to break. If your goal is to eat less junk food, find a healthy food you love. If running and keeping fit is part of your New Year’s resolution Wynsport.com have a wide range of running shoes and clothing to help get you started.

The opening of the showroom will further enhance our position as a one stop shop for all building needs and a warm welcome will be given to all customers, new and old. Managing Director, Andy Nicholls, explains “We have expanded again in 2010 with the developments at our Eleven Mile Lane site as well as opening of a new depot at Stalham, our turnover has increased to £6,500,000 which further enhances our position as South Norfolk’s fastest growing independent builders merchant;- being totally

independent means we care about our service, customers and reputation, all of which are key factors to our business.” “We wish all our customers, new and old, a healthy and prosperous New Year.”

Robert Kett School Children Honour Wymondham’s Local Hero On a freezing December day pupils from Robert Kett Junior School in Wymondham walked into town to perform a now traditional ceremony honouring the town’s local hero.

Above: Robert Kett Junior School pupils with flowers under the memorial plaque at Beckets Chapel In 1549 Robert Kett, a successful and respected Wymondham farmer and tanner, was hanged for his part in leading an uprising against social injustices. A major community event in 1999 was organised to celebrate the 450th anniversary of Kett’s rebellion, and each year since then children from Robert Kett School have marked the event

with a visit to lay flowers at Becket’s Chapel. Formerly the town library, the historic building was a Guild chapel in the Sixteenth Century and has strong associations with Robert Kett, who would have known it well. The building bears a plaque, erected as part of the Kett’99 celebrations, providing a permanent record of the tumultuous events of 1549.

social justice and reform.

Local historian Adrian Hoare reminded the children about the reason for the ceremony. He explained that Robert Kett with his brother William led a rebellion against land enclosures. After several weeks of struggle in which the rebels took and held the City of Norwich, the uprising was eventually put down by the King’s armies. 3,000 rebels were killed and Robert Kett and his brother were hanged as traitors.

Gardening In January! January is not a month for gardening but a month for planning. Spend your time looking through seed catalogues and plant books. Plan what you are going to grow in your garden this year and don’t forget to include some vegetables and herbs. You don’t need a garden to grow something edible, a patio or even a windowsill can produce herbs, chillies or cherry tomatoes. Prepare for the oncoming season by cleaning and sterilising greenhouses, polytunnels, cold frames etc. Clean pots and tools and get seed trays ready.

Come and see us for advice on growing potatoes, we are always happy to offer helpful hints.

At Wymondham Garden Centre we are stocked up with seed potatoes, onion sets, asparagus, garlic and seeds. This year we have a bigger than ever range of seed potatoes. First earlies are the new potatoes that we all love so much and the first to crop. Second earlies are also new potatoes or salad potatoes, slightly later than the ‘firsts’ Main crop are the larger general purpose potatoes. These produce a crop later in the season.

Experiment with different seed mixes, you will be amazed at how different birds are attracted to different ‘recipes’ To attract the beautiful green and gold finches fill your feeders with sunflower hearts and thistle seed. Place your feeder where it can be seen from a window, I promise you’ll love watching the birds coming and going.

Potatoes are not difficult to grow and many of the varieties are suitable for growing in pots, tubs and bags on the patio as well as in the ground in the traditional way.

14 Dispatch January 2011

Please remember to feed the wild garden birds at this time of year, feed them as much as you can. Nature does not provide them with much during the winter, most berries have gone and it is far too early for insects. The list of wild bird food available is endless, peanuts, seed, sunflower seed, suet balls and snacks etc.

Finally, on behalf of everyone at Wymondham Garden Centre I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. Thank you for visiting us in 2010, we look forward to seeing you all in 2011.

Shed Security In South Norfolk Shed owners are being reminded to ensure their sheds are kept secure and that property within is security marked. This police warning comes after reports of a number of sheds in the Wymondham and Hingham areas were broken into in December.

• Secure the windows with a weld mesh or a crime shield product secured from the inside. Remove the window if it is not required.

Doors were forced open and locks damaged, but nothing was taken.

• Fit a security light and shed/garage alarm to deter potential thieves.

The break in’s happened in the allotments, Chapel lane, Wymondham and the allotments, Dereham Road, Hingham, where a total of 11 sheds were damaged.

• Use padlocks and chains to secure high value items including power tools, lawnmowers and cycles to an anchor and each other.

There was also one shed broken into in St Edmunds Close, Costessey. Top tips include: • Do not neglect the hinge either side and use security screws or bolts through their fixings. • Fit good quality mortice locks or padlocks 1/3 up and 1/3 down on the door to reduce the leverage available.

• Overtly security mark your property with your house number and postcode. Shed alarms are available to purchase from Wymondham Police Station or contact the Safer Neighbourhood Team on 0845 456 4567.

Lancaster University Volunteering unit, Creative Arts. Warwick Arts Centre (On behalf of the West Midlands Boys Dance Alliance), Boys Dancing. Josh Worley, 14 year old Station Manager, said “It was very tense when all the nominees pictures were shown on the big screen and their entries announced to the capacity audience. It was only at that stage that we heard how good the other shortlisted organisations were and I must admit to feeling a bit insecure as SPID was announced as a

highly commended application. However, this was short lived when SNYA Radio was announced as the winner. We all just jumped to our feet with joy; I’m not sure what happened after that, we just made our way through the cheering audience to receive our award from TV Presenter, Michael Underwood” Norfolk County Council is predicting a budget gap of at least £155 million over the next three years and it is recommending the closure of the youth service amongst a myriad of other provision to reduce the deficit. Become A Twitter And Follow Us: @dispatch_mag Something new has happened online and if you’re not part of it, you’re missing out. The new trend I’m referring to is Twitter and it’s getting bigger and bigger every single day. Twitter is a way of connecting with other people who share your interests or who might be interested in what you have to say, be-it socially or for businesses. Twitter is a free service available at twitter. com. It’s a combination of a microblogging tool and a social networking site. Twitter is a fantastic way to get more traffic to your website and build a relationship with your friends and customers. For Businesses Twitter is changing the way that many people connect and communicate online and should be an indispensable part of your overall marketing plan.

why some people call it a “microblogging” tool. You have to keep your messages brief and to the point. Sometimes it’s a real challenge to get the point across in the allotted space, but it also leaves room for a lot of creativity! Coming up with ways to say what you have to say in that small space is part of the fun of Twitter. It makes you think about the core aspects of the message you are trying to convey. You may also find that it helps you write shorter reports and emails generally!

Twitter has two main components. Just like social networking sites such as MySpace or Facebook, you can add “followers” and follow other people as well. They’ll receive your updates and you’ll receive theirs.

Dispatch Magazine has been playing around with Twitter for the past few months, seeing what all the fuss is about, and seeing if it has any real advantage as a business tool. The answer is a resounding Yes, and our following is growing every day.

What is unique is that your messages are limited just to 140 characters, which is

Of course we have a way to go yet, to catch up with the king of Twitter, Stephen

Fry, who now has over 2 Million followers. However, those people who are already following Dispatch Magazine are all local to the areas we cover, and for the 30 seconds or so that it takes to write a 140 character message, we can help promote local businesses, keep people up to date of events which are taking place in your area, and bring information which perhaps arrived after the magazine went to print. If you haven’t yet looked into Twitter, or if you have set up an account but not really done anything with it, I urge you to start using it right now. Follow Dispatch Magazine using @dispatch_mag and you will be kept up to date on all that we are up to in the office, what features we have planned for future issues and what news or competition will be appearing in the next publications.

Set up a Twitter account, tweet from your mobile phone, or desktop, interact with it, and see the benefits first hand. If after a few weeks it’s not for you, stop using it, it’s that simple. If nothing else you get hear what your favourite celebrity is up to, and if you’re really lucky you can have a Twitter conversation with them. I know this to be true, as I’ve tweeted Duncan Bannatyne from Dragons’ Den, had a conversation and as a result, met with him to discuss some business. Twitter, it’s the next big thing! WELCOME TO

DEREHAM Cottage Windows Ltd

Norfolk Knitters

Cottage Windows Ltd is a small family business with a growing reputation in the Dereham area.

A couple of years ago I put an article in a local magazine about knitting for charity. That small item was the beginning of what has now become a vibrant organisation stretching right across the county.

Tony started the company in 2009 after working for a local firm for over 8 years and, with his son Robert, installs top quality doors, windows and conservatories to a high standard at competitive prices. We can also offer a wide range of composite doors and we fit ‘A’ rated glass as standard. Cottage Windows Ltd is a member of Network Veka, a voluntary organisation within the double glazing industry, which monitors members’ work and covers all guarantees. This means, that should a member cease trading, Network Veka will arrange for another firm with the same high standard of workmanship to carry out any repairs. So your guarantee is worth the paper it’s written on.

Because of our local building contacts, we are able to offer a complete service for conservatories or garden rooms. We can either put our customers in touch with local builders or deal with the builder on the customers’ behalf. If you are considering replacing your windows and doors or maybe adding a conservatory or garden room, please call Tony for a free, no obligation quote on: 01362 860331 or 07595 507244.

There are now nearly 400 knitters who make jumpers, hats, scarves and premature baby clothes, as well as squares which are made into colourful blankets. Every month we send many sacks full of knitting to charities for distribution in Eastern Europe and other parts of the world. Our members knit as much or as little as they like but everything they knit goes to help someone, somewhere. Most of our knitting goes with the International Aid Trust to help the needy in Eastern Europe and Asia but we also support a range of other projects. Currently we are knitting for the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoebox appeal, the premature baby unit at Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, the knitted Christmas tree project for John Grooms Court and decorations for our Christmas tree which will be in the Fakenham Christmas tree festival. We are part of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme and have grants from Norfolk Community Foundation and the John Jarrold Trust. This enables me to produce a quarterly newsletter which goes out to all our members and also means I can from time to time visit groups of knitters, picking up knitting and dropping off wool. We run a number of Knit and Natters

20 Dispatch January 2011

around the county which provide a chance for people to get together, see what other people are knitting, share patterns and enjoy each other’s company. A new Knit and Natter is about to start up in Dereham, so if you enjoy knitting or even if you are a lapsed knitter, do get out your needles and join in. It is to be held on the third Thursday of every month commencing 2pm at St Nicholas Bowls Club in Dereham. Give Jenny a ring on 01362 853092 if you’d like to find out more or just come along to the first session on 20th January. We are always on the look-out for wool as although many knitters buy their own there are many more who are elderly and on limited incomes and can’t afford to. We are grateful to generous people who have donated the wool they have no use for as well as those who have bought some for us. Any donations are welcome to help keep the needles clicking! If you would like to join our group and knit or crochet something just get in touch. I can help with wool, needles or patterns. If you would like to join Norfolk Knitters or have wool you can donate please contact Linda on 01603 872762

News from across your region

Is Your House Really Your Castle? We are all aware that we do not have complete freedom to do as we please in the grounds of our own properties. There are planning laws and building regulations and environmental laws covering public nuisances. These apply to everyone. There are also likely to be restrictions that apply specifically to our own properties. If your title is leasehold, the lease will almost certainly contain very specific obligations such as when to decorate, how to use certain parts of gardens, not to keep pets, prohibiting satellite dishes or even where to hang out washing. If your title is freehold it is also likely, particularly if it is a modern property, to contain provisions called “covenants” and “easements”. Covenants are terms that require you to do, or more commonly, not do certain things on your land. These might include not erecting any other building or adding an extension, to keep front gardens open plan, to decorate the outside in a certain way, to maintain some fences or walls, to pay towards the maintenance and repair of things enjoyed jointly with others (such as driveways or drains) and not to block accessways or pipes. Easements are rights attached to a property that enable the property owner to do something over a neighbour’s

land. On modern developments there will almost certainly be easements of drainage to allow every owner to use shared drains and pipes otherwise every time the loo is flushed there would be a trespass on the land under which the sewer ran. If you are building a new house where drainage has to pass over someone else’s land you need to make sure you have at least three rights; to lay pipes, to use them and to enter the neighbouring land to carry out repairs The most well known easement is the right of way and as every lawyer knows this easement can often be the source of much expensive dispute. It is important to know the limits of the right of way that affects you. The right might only be on foot and not for cars. It might be limited to certain hours or uses. A right of way does not give rise to a right to park on the way. That would be a trespass, although halting to unload or for deliveries would generally be acceptable. Old easements referring to horses and carriages will include modern

equivalent transport. Landowners cannot obstruct a right nor can they insist on a diversion even if the alternative might have advantages.

as of right for his land (without seeking permission or making payment) for 20 years or more it becomes a right of way.

Problems often arise between neighbours on the question of repair and maintenance. Surprising as it may seem the owner of the land over which the way passes is not under any obligation to construct it. Nor does he have to maintain it. There may however be a requirement to do both set out in the deed creating the right. The person using the right may enter and make repairs and do work to create a way adequate for use. He cannot demand a contribution from the landowner for that work unless there is a deed that allows him to do so. If the landowner puts in repairs he may, however, be able to claim some contribution from all who use it. Easements and covenants are created by deeds (e.g. a purchase deed). Easements can also arise through long usage. If someone has (e.g.) used an access way

£30,000 Up For Grabs For Community Projects £30,000 is up for grabs for community projects in the Breckland area that will help increase confidence in safety or boost community participation and engagement. Building on the successful ‘Your Partnership Your Decision’ participatory budgeting project delivered by the Breckland Partnership in 2009/10, the partnership is releasing a second £30,000 tranche of funding to help create stronger and safer communities in the district. Under the scheme, £6,000 has been allocated to each of the 5 Breckland Community Panels in Attleborough, Dereham, Swaffham, Thetford and Watton. Panel members, who include local ward members, business people, representatives from the Police, faith groups and area partnerships will assess bids and award sums of between £250 - £2,000 to support community projects. Although there is no

22 Dispatch January 2011

requirement for match funding, bidders are encouraged to look for additional sources of funding. Breckland Council Executive Member for Communities and Benefits, Adrian Stasiak said: “The participatory budgeting process is all about empowering local people to determine their own priorities. They know best how money should be spent in their own area, and this process enables the panels to support and fund the projects they feel will give the greatest benefit to their community”. To assist bidders, a coordinator has been appointed for each area to discuss project ideas and provide advice and

support with applications.

The school’s head of P.E. commented: ‘Lilyella was awarded a scholarship because of her skills as a really talented all-rounder with the potential to go further’. Other scholars have gained recognition for high academic ability and for their artistic talents. ‘We are a high achieving school,’ stated Headmaster Mr Stephen Crump, ‘but we celebrate achievement in all areas of the curriculum. Our scholarships help us attract and retain talented girls’. As a parent remarked: ‘We are delighted that the school has recognised and supported our daughter by awarding a scholarship; with two daughters in the school, we appreciate the financial support an award gives to parents’.

AN INTERVIEW WITH...

HEIDI DOUGHTY FROM BUTTERFLY BARNS genius. We haven’t decided yet! Up until September this year the nursery has steadily grown, perhaps just slightly slower than we had originally hoped. However, I have always remained confident that we were doing the right things. We introduced new staff, new equipment, expanded our outdoor space and facilities, and worked really hard to create a friendly home from home environment. We also now take children from 18 months old. Above: Heidi Doughty 1. Welcome back, we last interviewed you before butterfly barns opened in may 2009, so did everything go according to plan? Absolutely! We opened Butterfly Barns at the beginning of May last year and had a good level of interest from day one. We had an open day for the nursery and a number of parents and children that looked around the nursery that day joined up straight away. 2. 18 Months later, how are things now? Opening the nursery on the brink of a recession was either shear madness or pure

3. You mentioned ‘september this year’, so what changed? We have always been conscious that new starters to nursery generally come around September/October each year, but this was the first year, of course, we have experienced it. In the last couple of months our nursery numbers have almost doubled! We have mainly our parents to thank. They have recommended us so highly and our reputation amongst the local playgroups is really positive. I think we have proved that our approach really works, the quality of care is high, our staff are wonderful and we have proved we are here to stay.

4. What do you think makes the nursery so popular and what is it that parents like so much? The main reason is that we are different. It is strange because we have been saying from day one that we want to be different, but it is not until parents come and visit, or they hear it from one of our existing parents, that they truly believe it for themselves. Our nursery environment sets us apart in terms of availability of space and the quality of equipment, but it’s our child led approach that means the most to our parents and children. All our staff work in accordance with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), but with our shared ethos, that children, if supported, encouraged and given the opportunity, have the ability to learn independently. In the last 18 months the development of the children at Butterfly Barns has been outstanding. We often receive comments from our parents about how quickly their children are developing their language skills, confidence and interest in new things. 5. So the children are enjoying Butterfly Barns? The children love it! There is a real sense of community, it’s lovely to see them learning each other’s names so quickly, playing together and helping each other in a whole range of activities. They just all get on so well. One of their real loves is the food we provide. We cook everything from scratch, not just preparing ready-made meals, so the children get to see a whole variety of new ‘real’ foods. In some cases we cook with fruit and vegetables that we’ve grown at the nursery and the child help too. Not only do we believe this is better for health and development, but the children get to learn about where their food comes from and it often broadens their experiences of food. Gammon is a real favourite right now!! 6. You mentioned the recession and many businesses are struggling. How has Butterfly Barns coped being such a young business? As I said, I’m not sure whether the recession has helped or hindered. There are more parents going into work in these difficult times so it makes sense that demand for childcare would be high, but we have also done a number of things to compensate. We introduced and continue to offer half price fees for the first month, when parents enquire with one of our leaflets. We have also fixed our fees so

24 Dispatch January 2011

parents are paying the same level of fees they were paying last year. When we set up Butterfly Barns, we were always intent on setting up a sustainable business model, so we’ve been fortunate in that we have carefully managed the business from an early stage. 7. What problems have you faced in the last 18 months? Whilst the nursery numbers have grown steadily, we have had to deal with other issues. In particular, we have had to work closely with our staff in some cases to instil the child led approach. Most nurseries work with long term, medium term and short term planning and observations, which we feel gets in the way of interaction with the children. This strong emphasis on daily, weekly and long term planning and structured adult instigated activities which opportunities for children to expand on their natural interests and abilities can be limited. At Butterfly Barns we constantly evolved our approach to get the right balance. Whilst making sure we meet the requirements of EYFS, our flexible child-led approach means every child gets individual or tailored learning. The children literally speak for themselves! 8. So, do you have difficulties finding staff? Again we have been fortunate to have a fairly constant flow of applicants interested in working at the nursery. In fact at one point we had more staff applications than parent applications! Right now we are looking for a part time member of staff to do one-to-one with children with special needs. The recent rise in numbers of children means that we have to plan ahead, so we always welcome interest from qualified and experienced nursery staff. 9. Finally, what plans do you have for this year? For me personally, I have some more training to do as we work further towards our Forest School status. We also hope to expand the nursery further. Butterfly Barns has seen so many enquiries this past year for babies and children under 18 months old that we are now very keen to get on with building our baby rooms just opposite the existing nursery. With the development will come conference and meeting room facilities so who knows what services we might offer once we have the extra space? As ever I am always open to ideas!

of wrinkles using Botulinum Toxin injections – this is a chemical used frequently in medicine to effectively and safely treat a variety of conditions from cerebral palsy muscle spasticity to unstable bladders! It is particularly effective at paralysing certain facial muscles thus reducing the development of wrinkles especially in the forehead and crow’s feet area of the face.

How do the wrinkle reducing injections work? I offer treatments to reduce the appearance

Botox injections take around two weeks to take effect and the results last for around three months. I also use semi-permanent dermal fillers containing hyaluronic acid which is the body’s natural ‘skin plumper’. These can be used to fill out deep set wrinkles around the face and also to give lips a natural fuller appearance. The results of these fillers are instant and last for 6-12 months – a good investment!

A NEW YEAR, A NEW YOU... Steps To A Healthy New Year Whether it’s a resolution you set for January 1st, or a goal you start mid-year to reach, you can make the next year of your life a healthier one. The first step is to take a look at what your diet and health have been like for the last 12 months. Think about questions like these and write down your answers in a notebook so that you can look back them again a year from now: • How does your weight compare with a year ago? • Do you feel healthy and have a lot of energy or are you tired all the time? • Do you take vitamins or other nutritional supplements? • Do you eat at home most of the time? If so, what types of foods? Whole fresh foods, boxed foods or TV dinners? • If you eat in a restaurant, what types of restaurants do you go to and what types of foods do you choose? • How physically active are you? • Do you exercise regularly?

• Do you eat healthy size portions, or do you stuff yourself with every meal? • Do you smoke? • How much alcohol do you drink each week?

One good goal for your first month could be to resolve to take your lunch to work four days per week for each week this month instead of eating lunch in restaurants every day.

It is important to take an honest look at your health and dietary habits in order to set goals for your health and diet.

Another example of a monthly goal would be to resolve to walk for 30 minutes four days per week each week this month.

The Second Step Is To Set Goals • Do you want to lose weight? • Do you want to be able to run up and down your stairway without becoming winded? • Do you want to reduce cholesterol or lower your blood pressure?

Sometimes getting started with a new healthy diet and fitness plan is the easy part. Many of us hit occasional roadblocks due to busy schedules, loss of motivation and sometimes we hit weight loss plateaus.

Decide what you really want to achieve for your health and diet over the next month and over the next year.

Those weight loss plateaus are the times when we feel like we do everything right, but the scale

doesn’t seem to budge. When this happens, don’t give up, keep motivated to achieve the new you!

What Is Zumba Fitness®?... Spanish slang for “to move fast and have fun”, Zumba was created in the mid-90s by Colombian native Alberto “Beto” Perez. Dementia care at Buckingham Lodge is led by the Dignity Dementia Champions who are highly trained and skilled to deliver ‘person-centred’ care. News from across your region

Welcome To Winter! Snow, ice, and cold can be especially challenging to the body and mind, as well as your car. replaced, make certain that the wiper bay is free of debris. Ice and snow can freeze your wipers in place making them completely ineffective. Never pour hot water on a windshield to remove ice. You will remove ice all right...and crack the glass in the process!

Is Your Vehicle Ready For Winter? If not, there are some things you can do to help ensure that your car will start on cold mornings and survive even the nastiest winter weather. Check Under The Bonnet Make sure that your battery and all of its connections are clean and fastened; hoses and belts securely in place; your oil and oil filter changes up to date; your air filter clean; the radiator flushed and refilled; and your engine well tuned. One of the biggest contributors to a car not starting is the battery. If it is old and needs to be replaced, do it now! Look At The Windscreen Besides obvious cracks in your windscreen which you can have

Observe The Tyres Properly inflated all season tyres are usually all that you need for winter driving. Carry An Emergency Kit It doesn’t take much to get stranded during winter. Even the best maintained vehicle can get caught in a snow bank or stuck in a ditch. Carrying a fully charged mobile phone for emergency purposes is essential when driving anywhere uninhabited.

If you find yourself stuck in snow, make sure that the exhaust pipe is free of all snow if you run your car while idled. The following items should be a part of an emergency kit you have stored in your vehicle at all times: • Fully charged torch • Jump leads • Ice scraper / brush • Sand for traction • Candles • Matches • Distress sign • Medical kit • De-icer. If you frequently travel back roads and find yourself in remote areas, carrying an extra set of hats, gloves, and coats as well as several blankets is wise.

Keep a window cracked open to allow for air to circulate; turn the engine off every ten minutes for a half hour or more to prevent carbon monoxide build up inside of the car. You can survive the hazards of winter by taking a little extra care and caution. Properly equip your car today to ensure that your next trip is a safe one regardless of the prevailing road and weather conditions.

Some people carry chocolate with them at all times which can be a great and delicious! energy booster as well as fresh water (don’t leave it in the car as it will get frozen).
