The Green Dragon Inn Managing to be coaxed away from our homes on a dreary Sunday would usually be considered as quite an achievement by anyone who knows either of us well. However last Sunday was a little different as Jayne and I had decided to venture out for a Sunday lunch. dessert we chose to share a starter, which with hindsight proved wise, as even for a person with a keen appetite the portion size was impressive. After polishing off a delicious take on one of my favourite starters we were presented with our main courses. A traditional Sunday Roast consisting of a couple of generously sliced pieces of beef full of flavour and covered in gravy, a large homemade Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, a bacon wrapped sausage and a side dish of seasonal vegetables. It was certainly a very tasty plateful of food which didn’t leave us regretting the decision to venture away from home. The Green Dragon is located in the heart of the market town of Wymondham literally just a stones throw from the Ancient Abbey. Once parked in a nearby space and after a brief walk we were greeted surprisingly, by a small queue of eager hungry diners who unlike us, had risked not booking a table. Once inside the historic building which really is a treat for those people who

appreciate a Public House with real character, we were warmly greeted by a member of staff who promptly showed us to our table. Now part of the reason for our foray to the Green Dragon was down to several positive recommendations, so we had already made a decision on a chosen Starter of Garlic Mushrooms. In an attempt to leave room for our main course and

I opted for a tarte au citron with clotted cream ice cream whilst Jayne choose a warm orange sponge with lashings of hot chocolate sauce. Both were delicious and perfectly rounded off our Meals.

Sunday lunch should be a small yet wellearned break away from home and with the choice of establishments on offer these days increasing rapidly picking a good one is getting harder. The Green dragon has a lot to offer the discerning diner and we both look forward to visiting again. Top Tips For Running Safely Running is a reasonably safe sport. However you should keep your wits about you and be aware of potential dangers to ensure your running remains as safe as possible. Carry ID - Especially important if you are out running on your own. Of course you should let your nearest and dearest know where you are going to and for roughly how long, but still take some form of identification with you just in case. Carry your Mobile - They are a valuable emergency tool, if ever the need arises. Stay Hydrated – Ensure you carry enough water with you and drink before you are thirsty. Stay Focused - Keep your wits about you. Look and listen to what is going on around you. Face Traffic - When running on or near roads always run so that you are facing the oncoming traffic, if they don’t see you, make sure you see them.

Think conditions and unpredictable weather - Don’t take unnecessary risks. Never ignore Mother Nature! Beware the Dark! - Make sure that you can be seen by wearing reflective clothing, LED lights etc. Run in groups or with a partner, run in areas you are familiar with. Be safe, be seen! Warm Up, Warm Down and Stretch Even if you are limited by time always make sure you prepare your body for your run. You can get away with some light stretches and a gentle walk to start off with if you are really limited, but do try to set aside some of your time to your warm up.

It follows an increase thefts from and of vehicles in the South Norfolk area in the past few weeks.

Inspector James Brown who leads the policing teams in Wymondham, Hethersett, Mulbarton, Poringland and Loddon said: “It is important that people remember to remove anything from view from their vehicle that might tempt a passing thief and that cars should always be locked and secure, with they keys removed from the ignition - even if only leaving the vehicle for a few moments.” Additional crime prevention advice offered by Norfolk Police includes: • Don’t leave anything on display in your car. • Take your belongings with you when you leave the car- if you can’t, lock them in the boot before you start your journey. • Fit an electronic immobiliser- this will prevent the car from starting. • Mechanical immobilisers, such as steering wheel locks, are a good alternative to electronic immobilisers.

Keystone Development Trust is delighted to announce that £2,200 worth of grants has been awarded to six community groups benefiting the Keystone area. This is the first of three rounds of funding allocated from the 2010 Keystone Community Grants scheme. Successful organisations include Community Spirit in Thetford, which has received £350 to host chill out sessions for young people who live on the Abbey Estate during the summer holidays. Others include summer after school music lessons from the Thetford Music Project, summer outings provided by Fulmerston Family Project and running costs for Thetford Community Ballpark. Thetford Community Association based on the Redcastle Estate will receive £300 to light the Thetford Community Ballpark enabling use in the evenings. The Ballpark offers local young people a place to play sports, stay healthy and socialise with their friends free of charge. Approximately 250 people, mostly aged 10-15, use the Ballpark each week. This funding will ensure use of the floodlights until March 2011. Town Councillor, Terry Jermy, on behalf of Thetford Community Association said: “We are delighted to receive this money which will ensure that we continue to provide a safe and accessible place for young people to take part in sporting activities free of charge on the Redcastle Estate.” Keystone’s experience shows that significant, innovative and valuable work can be achieved with a small grant (£500 or less).

Can I Have My Money Back? By W F Smith and Co Consultant Roger Sharp. clearly in the business of providing goods or services for a price even though there may still be a real problem in deciding what the “price” should be because noone has put anything in writing before the work was done.

Lawyers, more often than you may think, have to deal with situations where people have paid money (sometimes very large sums) to someone else and there is no signed document by them to show the reason why. It can happen between members of a family but it also occurs between people in business. Problems then arise when one of them demands the money back either as repayment of an alleged loan or because the receiver was supposed to have given something in return but did not. Obviously there is little difficulty in working out the relationship where the receiver is

Within family circles, incredible as it may sound, the law still discriminates between a husband and a wife. If the husband pays money to his wife the law presumes that it is an absolute gift to her. If the wife pays money to the husband the law presumes the wife is entitled to have it back. This is clearly discriminatory between husbands and wives. The same distinction does not arise between co-habitants or those in a civil partnership. The Equality Act 2010 is supposed to abolish that difference but the section is still not in force. The basic principle the court adopts, generally, is that whenever money is paid without the payer getting anything back, the receiver is presumed to be holding the money on trust and it is repayable to the payer. This assumption can be disproved by any evidence that something different was intended by the parties and

often there will be such evidence in a commercial setting. For example someone might hand over some money to another and, within a short time, that other has set up a business. There is still the difficulty of deciding whether the payment was a loan (to be repaid in full) or an investment where the payer runs the risk of losing all or part of his money if the business is not successful. The problem surfaces in relation to joint bank accounts either when the joint holders fall out or one of them dies. Who owns the account? On death, if the account was jointly owned the survivor does. If a falling out occurs they will be presumed to own equal shares. If both account holders are putting money in, it will be taken for granted that the account is jointly owned. If only one account holder pays in, that person is presumed to be the sole owner.

jointly) was still wholly hers on her death and therefore assessable to Inheritance Tax, or whether by survivorship the account was her son’s. Only the mother’s money went into the account. The court decided, partly (there was another, tax related reason), that it was held in trust for the mother. The solution is not to pay large sums of money over without making sure there is something in writing saying why. The best advice is to get a solicitor to help before payment is made!

Such a question arose in a recent case when it had to be decided whether an account (held by a mother and her son

Breckland Launches Norfolk Village Games Hundreds of Breckland residents of all ages turned up to enjoy the sunshine and have a go at the sports that will feature in Breckland’s first Norfolk Village Games, later in the year. The free, fun day for all the family was staged at Watton Sports and Social Club on Saturday 24th July to launch Breckland’s first Norfolk Village Games road-show. Organised by Breckland Council in partnership with Active Norfolk and the Wayland Chamber of Commerce, the launch formed part of the Wayland Celebration of Community and Culture. A five-a-side football tournament was hotly contested and saw Watton under 18’s (pictured) claim victory in a passionately, competitive final. There were free taster sessions in archery led by Under 12 national champion Joe Ground. A climbing wall also proved popular with children and adults alike as did tennis sessions and dance instruction. Another popular activity was short mat bowls which proved a surprise

hit with the youngsters including 5 year old Maddison Lurkin-Brown (pictured). For those that wanted to take a break from the energetic activities there were crafts sessions and a barbeque served up food all day. Norfolk Village Games is a three-year initiative, beginning with Breckland, Broadland, North Norfolk, and West Norfolk Councils holding inter-village games in each of their districts in 2010. Next year will see all Norfolk Local Authorities staging games within their districts, with the winners competing in the first Norfolk Village Games, with a Norfolk 2012 Olympic celebration event planned for the following year. Breckland Council and Active Norfolk are calling on villages in the district to sign up

and enter a team to participate in this years Games; set to be held at Watton Sports and Social Club on Sunday 19th September. Adrian Stasiak, Breckland Council Executive Member for Communities and Benefits said; “Taking part in the Village Games is less about winning, and more about being active, having fun and getting to know new people in your village. It’s a huge opportunity to bring people together and get more people playing sport in our rural communities. Everyone should have the chance to find a sport they really enjoy.” If you are interested in entering a team in the Norfolk Village games visit www.activenorfolk.org/villagegames or call Active Norfolk on 01603 697008.

Hethersett Old Hall School How to Prepare Your Child for Nursery School This September sees great change at Hethersett Old Hall School. After 72 years of successfully educating girls, boys are now staying on from the Pre-prep department, opened in 2001, to join the Junior department and continue their education in the nurturing and caring environment they are familiar with up to the age of 11. Headmaster Stephen Crump says: “It is a natural progression for our Pre-prep boys to continue to the Junior department; they already know the school, the teachers and their classmates, making the transition far easier than a move of school. This enables them to focus fully on their school work without the added pressures of making new friends and finding their way around.”

accessible and family-orientated education option; pupils are allowed to stay until 5.45pm in the Junior section of the school and 6pm in the Senior section to partake in extra curricular activities, while also having the resources and support available to complete their homework. This leaves the rest of the evening free for out of school activities! The next open day will be held on Saturday 9th October from 10am-12.30pm for Pre-Prep, Junior, Senior and Sixth Form. For a tour of our Sixth Form facilities and the opportunity to speak to specialist AS and A-Level subject teachers, join us for the sixth form open evening on Tuesday 12th October from 6.30pm-8.30pm.

Preparing your child for Nursery school may be a bit challenging for some and a breeze for others. Its all about the individual child. Listed are a few tips to help get you and your child started. Instructions 1. Separation: This may be especially challenging for some, parents and children alike. If your child is not already in a day care or other child care situation, it is important to practice separation. Leave the child with a trusted individual twice a week for an hour or two. 2. Following Directions: Nursery school is not especially difficult but if your child has difficulty following instructions it may be a bit challenging for your child. Practice by playing games such as “Simon Says”, “Freeze Tag”, “Chutes and Ladders” and “Candy Land”. 3. Arts and Crafts: Generally your child will come home with an arts and crafts project after each class. Start your child early with the basic skills by creating your own projects at home using glue sticks, crayons and pre cut paper. 4. Nap Time: If your child is still taking naps, it is a good idea to get them on a new nap schedule that will not interfere with their school schedule. If your child is cranky during school, he or she may not get the full experience of nursery school

18 Dispatch September 2010

that you would expect because they are too tired to learn. 5. Story Time: If you are not already reading to your child, you should start right now. Books are typically read in nursery school and your child will be expected to sit still and listen during this time. Some teachers will even ask the children to draw a picture about the story they just heard. Practice doing this at home. 6. Nursery Basics: Although your child will probably learn his or her alphabet and to count to 10 in Nursery School, it is really a good idea if you try to teach them before they get to school if you child doesn’t already know these basics. Many of the other children will already know how and many will not, do not worry if your child hasn’t learned them before school.

BUSINESS & THE WEB The Importance Of Having A Website For Business The importance or significance of an internet presence through a website to the rapid financial growth and success of an individual or a company cannot be over-emphasised. An advantage that readily comes to mind is the greater market that the internet affords to everyone who is wise enough to exploit it to one’s advantage, especially now that the world has become a global village, whereby anyone can get access to the internet even in the remotest of all villages. The benefits of having a website are numerous. The internet gives you a 24/7 (24hrs a day / 7 days a week), 365/6 (365 or 366 days a year) access to everyone anywhere around the globe. And that means that even while a website owner may be sleeping, eating, playing or attending to the needs of the family, the website is always open for business and automatically attending to the demands of the site’s visitors without fail every single second, every single minute, every single

hour, every single day of every single year. With all these benefits, you would expect someone to incur a huge monthly bill as running cost and overheads, wouldn’t you? But, what do you actually incur as your “office” overheads or running costs? Nothing! All you spend in many instances is the time and cost of Spider Solutions building the website and hosting it on the internet on your behalf. At Spider Solutions our experience over the years has brought to the fore some reasons why many small businesses, do not have a website. Many of them may not yet be fully exposed to the internet. Additionally, they may know virtually nothing about the internet and, as humans, we tend to fear what we do not understand and hate what we cannot conquer.

Similarly, many small business owners are skeptical about the internet because, not only do they not understand how it works, but they equally see some site owners who appear not to have made any remarkable progress with their sites. Spider Solutions not only has extensive experience when it comes to designing and building websites, but they also offer the complete package including hosting of the site once built, domain name registration, email account set up and hosting and full maintenance of the website once it is live. Conclusively, having analysed the underlying causes of business stagnation and apparent lack of growth for many small businesses, Spider Solutions have highlighted the dire need of having a website as a huge boost for rapid growth

and financial success for small businesses. In order for any small businesses to embark on the road to sustainable growth and financial success and be well-equipped with the requisite “road map” blue-print for business success, it is imperative for such business to have a website. Bottom Line? Every business owner who decides to have a website built, hosted and maintained with an expert website building and hosting company like Spider Solutions, is destined for success even during these times of global economic recession. It costs nothing to chat, so call us to discuss your requirements: 01953 456789 www.SpiderSolutions.co.uk

J&S Homeworks Garden patios and decking have never been more popular and are a great way to expand your living area into the garden Installing a deck or patio in your garden can be as rejuvenating to your house as building a new room. Similarly making improvements to your garden by laying new turf or revamping an existing patio area can open up your home, making it feel substantially larger, more social & accommodating. Solid structures give a garden a sense of both practicality and permanence. Whether you choose a deck or a patio

depends on your site & style. A deck is ideal if your yard is sloped or has poor drainage; it provides a solid, level surface above uneven or soggy soil. A patio, in contrast, requires a level site for the cement, stone or paving slabs. Edge your patio with brick, stone, metal or plastic. Whichever option you choose,

News from across your region

Driving Abroad Don’t drive abroad unprepared – here are some tips for being prepared: Before You Go • Familiarise yourself with the driving laws of the country you are visiting – including local speed limits and which side of the road they drive on! • You should be aware that provisional licences are a national document issued within the framework of driver training and do not entitle the holder to drive outside the territory of the issuing member state. • Check with your insurance company that you’re fully covered to drive abroad including breakdown recovery and any medical expenses resulting from an accident. • Check whether you need a Green Card for the country you’re visiting – this provides minimum insurance.

• Check whether you need an International Driving Permit. • Check you can comply with the vehicle requirements of the countries you’ll visit. Find Out What You Need To Take: The regulations of what you need to carry with you in your vehicle when you’re abroad can differ very much from the UK. One example is your proof of vehicle ownership (V5 log book). In the UK, you are advised not to carry this in your vehicle, however in many European countries if you don’t then you could be subject to a fine. Whilst You’re Away: • Drive defensively and expect the unexpected – the local driving style may be different to that of the UK. • Don’t drive when you’re tired and take regular breaks on long journeys. • Don’t drink and drive – the alcohol limit may be lower than in the UK and in some countries there is zero tolerance for drink driving. • Don’t use your mobile whilst driving. • If you’re involved in an accident, contact your insurer immediately and

take photographs of damage to your vehicle. Driving Your Own Car You should have a GB sticker clearly visible on the back of your car if your number plate doesn’t include this information. You’ll also need headlamp converters if you’re driving on the right-hand side of the road. Hiring A Vehicle • Hire from a reputable company – the cheapest deal may not always be the best! • Insurance cover is often limited to the legal minimum of the country or state you hire in. You could be held personally responsible for any claim for injury or damage over this limit. • Ask your tour operator or insurer if they can provide top-up insurance to increase your cover. This may be cheaper than buying it abroad. Motorbikes • Make sure your travel insurance covers you before you decide to drive or be a

passenger on a motorbike. • Travelling by motorcycle, scooter or moped is significantly more dangerous than by car - if you’re not accustomed to riding a motorcycle you should not attempt to ride one for the first time abroad on unfamiliar roads. • If you do decide to hire a motorcycle or scooter, make sure you use a reputable hire company – check that they are licensed to hire bikes to tourists. • Always wear a helmet and protective clothing, whether you’re the driver or a passenger. • Never ride the bike when you have been drinking alcohol. • If you hire quad bikes check your travel insurance covers you for their use. Only hire them from a reputable company and find out whether it’s legal to ride them on the public road. • Ensure your insurance includes third party cover.
