Kerry Butcher Accountancy Services With the beginning of March we all think about spring. At least we hope we can think about Spring if the weather lets us... We are fed up with the miserable cold dark weather that we have had and with the days becoming longer and lighter we are hoping that Spring is on its way after all. I don’t know about you but I usually think of spring as a time for new beginnings – whether that is new lambs and baby chicks, new leaves on the trees or in my case new spring clothes for my wardrobe (well a girl can dream!) Whatever it is – spring is a good time to start any new ideas and ventures. So you have a new idea and you decide that maybe now is the time to put your idea into practice. You really hope that it will take off and who knows you may even end up making a go of it. It could earn you some money eventually but think of all those costs that you are paying out at the moment, surely you don’t need to register as self employed, do you? Are you keeping track of what you have paid out so far?

March 2014

Have you kept the invoices? Can you claim them back? What else can you claim? Do you need to tell the tax office?

your mind at rest – tell you what you do need to be doing, what you need to keep and importantly – what is eligible to be claimed against tax.

There are so many questions when you start a new venture – it may not be a massive business that changes your life to start with – but you may still need to register as self employed with HMRC. So how do you do that? What does that mean and most importantly what is this going to cost?

If your new venture was a rental property then you could be at the stage where you need to complete your rental statement for the year. Did you know that rental properties are taxed under a different schedule to self employed businesses?

Here at KBA we can answer all of these questions and more – and in answer to the “how much will it cost” question – the answer is initially Absolutely Nothing! If you have questions that need answering or you are unsure of any aspect of your new venture or idea–why not book a free consultation with us? Here at KBA we offer a free initial consultation to any new client which can last up to an hour – just call us or email and we can arrange an appointment there and then. Hopefully we can put

One of the differences is that all rental income has to be prepared to 5 April each year. So if you have a rental property then your year end is almost upon you. Have you told the tax office about your property? Do you know what you can claim for? What are the rules regarding wear and tear allowance? To find out the answers to all these questions and more – why not come and talk to us – we are friendly, helpful and approachable and most of all we are on your side and want you to get the most out of your venture.

We can also help you to decide whether it is better to claim those big expenses now or whether it would be better to save for any capital gains tax when you come to sell the property. These are just a couple of the topics that we cover and there is lots more that we can help with. We don’t just to tax returns! We can help with VAT, our payroll service is great (even if we do say so ourselves!) and we offer so much more plus our prices are very reasonable. So why not give us a call 01953 457173 or email kerry@kerrybutcher.co.uk and see how we can help you. It doesn’t cost anything to ask and we hope that you will be glad you did.

New Media, New Markets – A Balanced Approach The Internet has enabled Norfolk companies to broaden their horizons, targeting customers nationally and globally. But is there a danger of them losing out by neglecting traditional markets and media? Local design company KSD Associates has the answer, with a balanced mix of online and offline marketing, as well as strong ties with the local community. The world is getting smaller. With online media providing cost-effective access to a national or global marketplace, small and medium-sized businesses are no longer confined to targeting local customers. However, traditional media and markets still have their place in the marketing mix. In a crowded digital arena, supporting websites and email marketing with printed materials can reinforce the message and deliver much better results. What’s more, staying in touch with your loyal local customer base is essential. “It’s a matter of planning a cohesive strategy that integrates online and offline media to target traditional and new markets,” says Kevin Smith, owner of Norfolk-based graphic design agency KSD Associates. “For many

small and medium-sized businesses, the Web remains something of an enigma, complicated by technospeak and buzzwords. We’re here to demystify the world of online marketing and provide straight-talking advice. We can help businesses take advantage of the opportunities and avoid the pitfalls that can be costly and non-productive.” New technology, Traditional values. Whether it’s websites and social media or brochures and mail shots, KSD applies similar fundamental principles: good design, clear messaging and a strong call to action. “New media are an evolution, not a revolution,” observes Kevin. “It’s not about reinventing the wheel. The way you communicate with customers hasn’t changed dramatically. They still respond to a good offer that inspires them, is clearly presented and makes it easy for them to respond. We’ve adapted our skills to embrace the possibilities of this new digital

world and help companies take full advantage of the opportunities that it creates.” Community spirit. KSD prides itself on having strong links with the local community and understanding its dynamic. “We share our experience and expertise from an informed viewpoint,” asserts Kevin. “It’s not just about having the creative and technical skills to produce eyecatching design solutions. We’re firmly rooted in Norfolk and committed to working with local companies to help them continue building a loyal local customer base while widening their reach to target new markets.” KSD has already begun helping to foster community spirit in its home base of Wymondham through membership of the town’s Business Group. This has led to sponsorship of the publicity for the annual carnival, which this year will include the grand

finale of Wymondham’s Got Talent, an opportunity for local residents to show off their entertaining skills to a live audience and a panel of judges, including professionals and local personalities. “We’re delighted to be able to offer our expertise to benefit the local community,” comments Kevin. “Having events such as the annual carnival not only bring the community together. They also attract visitors to the town and help boost the local economy.” There’s much talk about ‘globalisation’ these days. But the term on everyone’s lips could soon be ‘localisation’. In the Internet Age, marketing power is rapidly being devolved to local business communities. With the help of forward-thinking companies such as KSD, businesses large and small can harness that power and make the most of the opportunities. Tel - 01953 601757

Community Bookshop Opens A group of volunteers in Wymondham have formed a company to run a community bookshop for the town. From Saturday 1 February Kett’s Books has been trading in Whartons Court, in the town centre of Wymondham. It is a Community Interest Company, which means it is run by volunteers to direct profits back in to the community. The shop’s formal opening was held on Saturday 1 February at 11:00. All the community were invited to join them for light refreshments, a craft, and games. The team have delivered the shop against the odds: in only four short months they organised themselves to form a company, raise funds, and learn the trade to run the bookshop independently. Tracy Kenny, who is one of the Directors overseeing the shop, pointed out that the group wanted to pay tribute to the community values which Kett showed nearly 500 years ago. “We saw the importance of tying Wymondham’s

March 2014

heritage to what we are doing for its future. The support and interest have been breathtaking.” The shop has received start-up loans, but is offering a 10% discount until the end of 2015 to those who buy a Friends card for a £20 minimum donation. Chris Kutesko, the shop’s Finance Director, added “It’s a tangible way of demonstrating that support we’ve seen in the public’s good wishes, and it helps us build the start-up funds we need in these critical early days.” So that everyone could contribute to the celebration, the shop invited visitors to help make the celebratory bunting, by writing favourite author quotes, drawing pictures and bringing their own embellishments to add to one of the triangles. For more information ring the shop on 01953 603663.

Sound Sleep Beds Buying a new bed this month, look for the big tick logo. It’s March again and that means one thing, it’s National Bed Month!

that our mark of approval really meant something,” said Jessica Alexander, executive director of the NBF.

This National Bed Month, for the first time ever, consumers can now buy a new bed with the reassurance that it is ‘officially’ safe, clean and honest. The National Bed Federation’s ‘NBF Approved’ large tick logo means the manufacturer who made that bed has been independently audited to make sure they follow all the required procedures to produce safe, clean and hygienic mattresses. In short, that they are what they say they are. The move follows increasing mistrust among consumers about the products they are buying – particularly those where the contents are unseen and taken on trust, like beds and mattresses. The NBF is the UK trade association for British bed manufacturers. And to meet its new Code of Practice, member companies have had to go through rigorous and independent audits. “We wanted to ensure

Particularly important to anyone buying a new bed is its safety and the reassurance that the mattress meets strict British flammability regulations. If it doesn’t - and recent publicity on BBC’s ‘Fake Britain’ programme which aired in January 2014 has highlighted the growing number of illegal mattresses being sold with counterfeit fire labels – then it could prove fatal if ignited. Silentnight Beds have released a video of flammability tests on mattresses undertaken in their laboratory, the results are shocking. A non-compliant mattress, which was purchased online, therefore on sale to the public, was on fire within two minutes and releasing significant amounts of toxic fumes within three minutes, by this time the fully compliant mattress had fully extinguished itself. Within six minutes, the room is fully consumed with smoke and fire, the

average response time for fire fighters in the UK is nine minutes. See it for yourself on our TV in store or on our YouTube page, search for Sound Sleep Beds. Less dramatic but still concerning are health and hygiene issues. We all want to think the nice new bed we are getting in to is clean and hygienic – and the NBF Approved logo means consumers can be sure that the bed they are buying comes from a manufacturer with all the right procedures in place to be sure it is just that. And lastly, we want to know that the mattress we are buying contains exactly what it says it does. Not to do so contravenes the Trades Descriptions Act – and again, the big tick logo means you can be assured the product you are buying is as described.

the NBF’s new mark of approval – it’s designed to keep people sleeping safe as well as sound.” Sound Sleep backs the National Bed Federation’s new code of practice and are committed to supplying clean and safe products, so you can have a sound sleep knowing that your bed is fully compliant to UK laws and regulations. NEW YEAR, NEW SMILE T h e I m p o r t a n c e o f O r a l H y g i e n e f o r Yo u r Pe t Imagine how your teeth would look and how your breath would smell if you didn’t brush your teeth regularly – it’s the same for your pet. Unless you’re regularly providing some form of dental care you are neglecting an important part of pet care. If plaque builds up and is left untreated your pet may develop the following symptoms; • Offensive breath • Red, swollen and painful gums, • Tartar • Loose teeth • Difficulty eating Periodontal disease can have serious consequences on your dogs general health such as effects on liver, kidney and heart. You will be surprised to read that by the time most dogs are 2 years old they have already developed dental problems. Regular plaque removal, at home, will prevent the start of periodontal disease and tooth-brushing is considered the single most effective method. It is best to begin brushing from a young age, usually when a puppy or kitten is between 8 and 12 weeks although it is never too late to start, even with geriatric pets. There are also several effective chews available on the market and one that we recommend is a Stag Bar which is a natural, long lasting antler chew that cleans the teeth whilst also being kind to sensitive stomachs. It is important to use products that are specifically designed for pets. Diet can also be a major factor in the development of plaque and tartar. Generally, dry food is best for the removal of plaque. It is thought that canned foods may actually contribute to plaque build-up and subsequent periodontal disease. If you are at all concerned that your pet may show signs of the symptoms relating to periodontal disease then the first step would be to consult your vet. The Old Golfhouse Veterinary Group are currently offering free dental checks with their nurses.

Time Is Free – Give It The Third Breckland Book Up For Lent Running throughout March at Watton Library

Cats Protection’s Norfolk is asking local cat lovers to consider giving up their time for Lent. Since the centre opened, volunteers and staff have worked tirelessly to find new homes for thousands of cats and neutered hundreds of felines in the area. However, with demand for their services growing on a daily basis, the charity says they really need extra help. “Instead of giving up the usual things for Lent, such as chocolate, we’d really appreciate it if people could give up some of their free time to help local cats”. “Working with Cats Protection is a fun and rewarding experience, particularly if you have a skill that would benefit the charity or would like to develop new skills by taking on a fresh challenge. Our volunteers gain a great deal of satisfaction helping cats get a second chance in life.”

Cats Protection’s Norfolk is part of the charity’s nationwide network of 257 volunteer-run branches and 30 adoption centres that together help over 218,000 cats each year. More than 8,500 volunteers across the UK fill a variety of roles including administration, transporting cats and fundraising, giving them the opportunity to help cats, meet like-minded people and be part of a worthwhile cause. If you are interested in helping Cats Protection Norfolk then please call 01362 687919 For further information, please contact Paul Hannant on 01362 687919 or dereham.deputy@cats.org.uk

Sarnies at Heart of British Diet Despite all the negatives of the recession, it seems that ready-to-eat sandwiches are now such a big part of our lives that we no longer see them as a luxury. New figures show that we chomped our way through 126 million more pre-packed sandwiches last year than in 2008, bringing the total consumed to a whopping three billion sarnies across the UK. And although another three billion lunch boxes were taken to work, more people bought ready-made sarnies from supermarkets to take home - an increase of eight per cent - to put into lunch boxes the next day.

Sandwiches are also highly fashion-led with constant changes in the 20 most popular fillings, although chicken salad remains at number one. In fact, chicken is the most popular filling, accounting for about 30% of all ready-made sandwiches, or 68,000 tonnes of the stuff The statistics from the British Sandwich Association show that the humble sandwich has come a long way from its origins as a snack for field labourers in

Ginger Cake Quick and simple recipe for a timeless classic INGREDIENTS • 250 g self-raising flour • 2 tsp ground ginger • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • pinchfine salt • 200 g golden syrup • 2 tbsp syrup from the jar of stem ginger • 125 g butter • 3 lumps preserved stem ginger, about 55g • 2 tbsp sultanas, heaped • 125 g dark muscovado sugar • 2 large eggs • 240 ml milk METHOD 1. You will need a square cake tin measuring approximately 20-22cm, lined on the bottom with baking parchment or greaseproof paper. 2. Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4. Sift the flour with the ground ginger, cinnamon, bicarbonate of soda and salt.

March 2014

3. Put the golden and ginger syrups and the butter into a small saucepan and warm over a low heat. Dice the stem ginger finely, then add it to the pan with the sultanas and sugar. Let the mixture bubble gently for a minute, giving it the occasional stir to stop the fruit sticking on the bottom. 4. Break the eggs into a bowl, pour in the milk and beat gently to break up the egg and mix it into the milk. 5. Remove the butter and sugar mixture from the heat and pour into the flour, stirring smoothly and firmly with a large metal spoon. Mix in the milk and eggs. The mixture should be sloppy, with no trace of flour. 6. Scoop the mixture into the lined cake tin and bake for 35-40 minutes, until a skewer inserted in the centre of the cake comes out clean. Unless you are serving it warm, leave the cake in its tin to cool, then tip it out on to a sheet of greaseproof paper. Wrap it up in foil and, if you can, leave it to mature for a day or two before eating.

the middle ages. However, it did not get its name until 1762 when the 4th Earl of Sandwich called for some cuts of beef to be placed between toasted slices of bread so that he could continue gambling while he ate. The Earl’s request elevated the humble sandwich from the fields to the tables of the aristocracy and it seems it hasn’t looked back since, becoming the snack of choice for lunches, parties and picnics in its 250-year history. In total British consumers managed to munch their way through over 11.5 billion sandwiches last year - with more than half of them made and eaten at home. While the average price of a sandwich is almost £1.91, the record for creating the most expensive sarnie ever is claimed by chef Tom Bridge whose Lancaster Cheese Sandwich which was sold on ebay in 2006 for £345. The creation included white Umbrian truffles at £1,700 per kilo - an ingredient unlikely to be found in most kitchens. The world’s largest pre-packed sandwich is believed to be one created by Roberts Bakery in Norwich that was 2.5 metres long, packed with Marmite, tuna and mayonnaise and weighing the same as 1,000 loaves. Britain’s biggest sandwich retailer is now the American franchise chain Subway

which shot ahead of Tesco, Greggs and Marks & Spencer to take the lead in 2006. But retailers would need to take note that many consumers buying sandwiches in busy spots refuse to queue for more than two minutes for their lunch or afternoon tea. Despite the huge variety of breads on offer today, nearly 60% of pre-packed sandwiches are made with traditional square sandwich bread while wraps account for just four per cent. Nearly 20% of all sandwiches are purchased in London with the Midlands just behind at 17% followed by Yorkshire on 12% and 11% in Lancashire while people in the North East and South West buy the fewest. Jim Winship, Director of the British Sandwich Association, says: “It seems that while some consumers reacted to all the negative publicity by making more sandwiches at home, this was short-lived. “The evidence suggests that people get bored with the limited choice of ingredients they have in the home for making up lunch boxes - the choice of fillings in sandwich outlets is generally much greater. “We suspect people also value that extra 10 minutes in bed each morning if they don’t have to make up a lunch box!”

Window Geeks “Replacing your steamed-up windows doesn’t mean you have to replace the whole window…Save thousands by changing only the glass”… It can be stressful when things break or go wrong, especially when it seems the only solution comes at great expense. Unexpected bills can hit households very hard at a time when every penny counts and it means that thousands of homeowners put off fixing their windows or doors for fear of the high costs usually associated with these types of products... Well now you can relax…because WindowGeeks, a national window, door and conservatory repair specialist, has expanded into Norwich and will service the whole of the Norfolk region, giving local home owners access to real money-saving options; one that can reduce what could be an alarming bill in the thousands to a far more acceptable one in the low hundreds - and in most cases even lower than that. The fact is that the average single repair or replacement undertaken by WindowGeeks, which includes locks, handles and hinges, as well as the usual replacement of steamed-up double glazed units is less

than £60...not surprising really when you consider that the replacement of a single steamed-up double glazed window starts from as low as £30 including VAT and fitting…which is why, at this point, many people take the opportunity to upgrade to energy efficient double glazed units. Our new local and experienced team, headed up by Steve Olley, join all of our other skilled craftsmen and women throughout the UK, each providing a professional and cost effective service to 1,000s of customers from Plymouth in the Southwest, through Norwich in the East, up to Preston in the North and all points in-between… “Lots of people have problems with their windows,” says Steve, “They get steamed-up and won’t clear, or the locks stick or the handles get loose…and it becomes even more of a problem at this time of year when cold draughts get through...but what’s really surprising is that most people don’t realise that all of these problems can be fixed quickly and without spending a fortune or having to

sell one or more of their children, unless they want to of course”… WindowGeeks has over 38 years’ experience in the glazing industry and it’s sad to think that there are still quite a few traditional window companies that either refuse or just don’t want to carryout repairs…now were not saying that all double glazing companies don’t carry out repairs, many do, and do a great job, but Steve adds, “In most cases they’re not really interested in the smaller jobs and that’s what’s so great about WindowGeeks, we offer a real cost-effective solution, which makes it a very easy decision for our customers to choose us...there’s no pressure sales from us because there’s no viable alternative, unless, that is, you want to spend 10, 20 or even 100 times more on replacing all your double glazing!” While the cost savings might be the biggest draw, there’s another reason customers should choose WindowGeeks and one that has inevitably convinced many customers throughout the UK to use us;

“It’s all about honesty and trust,” says Steve. “There’s integrity in what WindowGeeks do and that’s very important to me, we tell the truth, only charge for what needs doing and we always honour our promises…We run a very successful and ethical business based on good old fashioned customer service backed up with top quality products and support from our head office.” WindowGeeks provides free quotations with; • No call out charges • No credit card charges • No deposits • No minimum order values, • No high pressure sales men or women • No hidden extras • 10 year guarantee on all glazed products All our quotes include VAT and Fitting Call now for a FREE QUOTE on 0800 61 22 943 or visit us at www.windowgeeks.co.uk

Eagle New Energy Solar PV Progress – New Design Solutions The solar photovoltaic industry has boomed over the last few years. In the first quarter of 2014 Britain has the largest market for solar PV in all of Europe and at the beginning of January we reached a milestone of 500,000 installations under the feed-in tariff scheme. Investment in the solar industry is at an all-time high, proving that solar PV is and will continue to be a viable and sensible investment. Speaking at an event in Parliament in January, Minister of State for Climate Change Greg Barker predicted that the UK will pass the 3GW of installed capacity milestone in the near future – but we are still a long way from our target of 20GW by 2020. Solar PV is the most popular renewable energy solution and it was well documented last year just how much the British public support the renewable energy industry. Of those surveyed in DECC’s most recent public attitude tracker 85% expressed their support for solar in the UK.

Ever increasing investment in the solar industry means there are constantly new and innovative products on the market, rigorously checked under MCS (The Microgeneration Certification Scheme). Eagle New Energy based in Mildenhall and Attleborough, have seen a marked increase in enquiries for roof-integrated and building-integrated modules. Roof-integrated modules replace the tiles on your roof rather than sitting on top of the roofline – this means they are visually more appealing sitting flush in the roof and also guarantee water-proofing since they are part of the fabric of the roof. These are ideal for new build properties or commercial buildings – for example Eagle are currently installing them on a village school. However there is no reason why they are not suitable for older properties either. Gavin Bulmer, Business Manager at Eagle New Energy said ‘We recently had a customer who wanted to

re-roof a section at the back of his old farmhouse and use the original tiles on a new carport – so from the front of the house all the tiling matched. He employed Eagle New Energy to install a roof-integrated solar PV system which included the re-tiling of this section of the property, and the system looked fantastic when it was completed!’ The in-roof modules are available in a variety of sizes and designs making them suitable for slate, pantile or concrete tiled roofs. Eagle New Energy are also leading the way for companies and architects looking to integrate PV into the look of their building as a design feature, making it part of the fabric of the building.

light transmission and can also be provided in a range of colours and designs. At their showroom in Attleborough, Eagle New Energy have an example of a shimmering gold and green BIPV module which is currently being installed on a new apartment block in London. BIPV modules can be used vertically within the façade of a building to replace glass or act as cladding to the spandrel zones; it can also be used in pitched frames as an atria roof, canopy or walkway. If you would like any further information please contact Eagle New Energy on 01638 582111 Or visit their website www.eaglenewenergy.co.uk.

Building-Integrated PV is now the fastest growing sector in the PV market. Glass laminates encapsulate PV cells within and can be substituted for standard glass and other cladding materials so the building façade generates electricity. The modules are manufactured to the architect’s bespoke design with variable

Make The Most Of Your Retirement We are all living longer and planning to do more with our free time... ..But a changing economic climate and pension provisions mean many people don’t often have the money to realise their retirement dreams. Equity release is beginning to play an important role for home owners aged over 55 and in my experience the most important factors for people seeking advice is to demonstrate and be able to guarantee the following: • There must be a ‘no negative equity guarantee’ to safeguard your beneficiaries • You have the right to sell your home at any time to down-size or move into other accommodation, the amount owed is then repaid with any balance transferred to your bank account • No monthly payments are made, as interest is rolled up on a lifetime mortgage. If a Home Reversion plan is more suitable you would sell a proportion of your property and remain in your home for life with no roll up of interest on the percentage of the value retained.

• You are able to remain in your own home for as long as you wish • Money borrowed will be at a fixed rate of interest for life, is tax-free, and can be used for any purpose There are many reasons why people raise money using Equity Release: to repay an existing mortgage, home improvements, buy a motor home, travel abroad, help their children with house purchase or to enhance their own lifestyle. Before making any decisions you are advised to seek independent professional advice from a person qualified and approved by the FCA. This can be checked on the FCA Register: www.fca.org.uk/register or telephone 0800 111 6768.

you to discuss and reflect on the advice given. In my opinion you should not make any decision at the first meeting. This should be to establish whether the person giving you the advice is acceptable to you or not before asking him or her to obtain further information specific to your own needs. It is an FCA requirement that Keyfacts are given to you and thoroughly explained, this may be from two or three providers to assess the most suitable before making your decision to apply for either a lump

sum of money, income or to secure a facility that will allow you to draw down sums as and when required. There are many options available to you hence the reason why it is necessary to be fully informed. For further information please call me on 01508 483983 or visit my website: www.businessmattersifa.co.uk - My FCA number is 301141 Michael Boon Cert PFS CeMAP CeRER member of the Equity Release Council

Before deciding whether Equity Release is suitable for you, your questions should be answered to your total satisfaction, be prepared to take time over this, never be rushed into something if you are in any doubt. Energy Blog If your Electric or Gas is supplied by any of the BIG 6, you ARE paying to much – fact! It’s your high prices which are inflating the BIG 6 profits. British Gas for the last three years have charged the highest prices, and that’s why they have the most adverts on TV. This is the Government saying this not me! The prices and profits of British Gas have been questioned by the energy minister, who suggested it might have to be broken up.

prices to domestic customers in the past three years. If regulators found evidence of a monopoly, this could see a company being broken up.

The ‘Big 6’ meanwhile were roundly criticised in the report. Here’s how Utility Warehouse compare against the UK’s biggest energy companies:

British Gas currently has 41% of the domestic gas supply market, the largest share of any of the big six. It said the data highlighted by Mr Davey had already been fully disclosed.

PROVIDER Utility Warehouse EON EDF Scottish Power SSE British Gas Npower

So what is the alternative? In a letter to regulators, Ed Davey said profit margins made by the “big six” energy firms when supplying gas were higher than previously thought. He called on regulators to study the dominance of British Gas, which said it would participate in any discussions. The company’s owner, Centrica, saw its shares fall by 3% in early trading. Mr Davey wants a market investigation, pointing out that British Gas had charged among the highest

Once again, Utility Warehouse are in the enviable position of not just beating the ‘Big 6’ energy companies when it comes to customer satisfaction, but thrashing them! In its latest survey of consumers, Which? has once more named Utility Warehouse in the top three energy companies in the country, awarding them a fantastic 75% customer satisfaction score. What’s more, Utility Warehouse were awarded a Five-Star rating for customer service, value for money, and billing accuracy & clarity.

SCORE 75% 45% 44% 41% 41% 39% 31%

The latest annual Which? energy survey polled more than 8,000 consumers. It condemned the bigger companies for “falling short” of customers’ needs, while praising their challengers. Utility Warehouse is singled out for offering a “very attractive package” thanks to our Gold Bundles. This result means that Utility Warehouse is the only provider that has been in the top three energy companies according to Which? since

surveys began in 2008. And this is on top of the recommendation Utility Warehouse receive year in, year out from Which? for their Home Phone & Broadband services. All of this means you can confident that you’re in great hands when you switch to Utility Warehouse. You can be confident that you will receive Five-Star customer service and value for money... just ask Which?! Water Where You Need It It makes sense to save rainwater with a water butt, providing your plants with lots of water whenever they need it. This will help you beat the hosepipe bans and drought orders that have become common during the summer months. Water butts no longer need to be located next to the downpipe but can be located anywhere in the garden at the most convenient locations for watering. Traditional butts are easy to attach to any building that has a gutter and a downpipe. And if a building such as greenhouse doesn’t have any, then consider having them fitted - you could save many litres of water. It is estimated that around 24,000 litres can be saved from the average house roof every year.

some are more streamlined for fitting into tight spaces. The most useful ones have a tap for filling watering cans easily. Many come with stands so the tap is at the right height to fit a watering can underneath. How to fit a water butt There are two ways to fit a water butt. The easiest way is to sever a plastic downpipe with a hacksaw and place the butt directly underneath it - an overflow pipe can be attached to the butt to channel away excess water to a drain or into another butt. Alternatively, cut a notch out of the pipe and fit a rain trap and connecting pipe - this will transport water to your butt and allows you to put it in the most convenient place.

Choosing your water butt Water butts are available in lots of shapes and sizes, and can hold between 100 and 700 litres of water. They generally look like barrels, but

An alternative to a water butt is a rainwater-harvesting system. They look like water butts, but are more expensive, due to a powerful filter that cleans the water, and have an

internal pump in the tank which can drive water powerfully through a hose. Below-ground tanks can also be installed, which have a bigger storage capacity. These systems allow you to store your water almost anywhere in the garden. This can be ideal if you want to place them in discreet locations around the garden. Beat droughts and hosepipe bans With 40,000 litres of water falling on the roof of an average UK house each year, it makes sense to collect it where possible. With a collection of well-positioned water butts, you will be able to store enough rainwater to see you through even the driest of summer seasons, knowing that almost every drop of rainwater falling on the roof of your property can be effortlessly channelled to your water butts or other storage tanks.
