Our heritage
IH London is located in the heart of London, in beautiful Covent Garden, close to bus routes and the Northern, Piccadilly and Central Tube lines. The school has 9 floors and 51 classrooms with specialist training rooms. It has modern facilities, including super-fast Wi-Fi, Interactive Whiteboards, a lending library, computer access and a cafeteria. It also has a large ELT resource centre, with access to a plethora of teaching and training materials.
IH London introduced the world’s first practical qualification for English Language Teaching in 1962, which later became the CELTA. It is accredited by Cambridge English and is recognised internationally.
Why international House London International House London is the largest Cambridge English CELTA and Delta centre in the world. We have also developed a range of other specialist teacher training and development programmes and each year we welcome teachers from all over the world to participate in our courses. We also conduct training programmes in other countries (through government ministries, universities and private establishments) and have developed online professional development courses. Many of our alumni have gone on to have great careers in the industry, publishing leading textbooks, delivering training programmes all over the world and attending leading industry-related conferences.
IH London is a not-for-profit organisation and reinvests all funds into our facilities and staff and into funding scholarships and projects throughout the world. Our legacy is a network of trainers who have published leading text books and helped develop and shape the industry.

Life after CELTA Getting a job
What next?
With an internationally recognised and externally validated qualification and from a well-known school, it will be easier to secure a job. We help you prepare by including a session on what to expect in the job market, within the TEFL industry. We also post job opportunities on our job boards, with lots of opportunities to consider in the UK and abroad.
Gaining a CELTA qualification doesn’t only lead to a career in teaching English, but through it you will also acquire confidence and interpersonal skills that are transferable to many jobs where clear communication is vital. We can also guide you on further career options, such as specialising in Young Learners, Business English teaching or teaching English for Specific Purposes. Many candidates also go on to study the diploma-level qualification, the Delta and the Diploma in Academic Management, at IH London.

IH London CELTA graduate 1981
IH London CELTA graduate 2015
The teaching practice was really stimulating, because IH had classes of students who had signed up to be taught by trainees, so it was possible to interact with them in a fruitful way. The standards couldn’t have been higher and the trainers were really expert and totally dedicated. After the CELTA, you start to become an expert; life has more colour; your horizons are infinitely broader; you appreciate the richness of English more; your brain is more focused. What more could you want? I now run three language schools in Italy, where I still utilise the skills learnt during my CELTA course. I founded Shakespeare Studio Group SRL, a chain of schools opened in 1988, 2002 and 2005 in the areas of Montecchio Maggiore province of Vicenza, Noventa Vicentina province of Vicenza and San Bonifacio province of Verona.
A few months after completing IH’s part-time CELTA, I started volunteering with a number of charities in London and taught graded ESOL groups at each for a few hours a week . This built much needed confidence and classroom awareness. The structure and practices instilled from day one of the course were key to being able to independently conduct lessons and more importantly helped me to self-monitor and develop. Six months down the line and combining this experience with my corporate background, I am now employed to deliver in-company ESOL lessons which is exactly what I had hoped for when starting the course just over a year ago.

After you complete the CELTA, why not try an online course in Pronunciation and Teaching. (see page 22) 9

COURSE OUTLINE
This course explores current trends in the YL classroom, what teachers see as the main challenges in teaching English language and primary subjects through English (CLIL) as they prepare students for the outside world. You will come away with greater understanding of your own beliefs and approach as a teacher and new ideas to take back to your classroom.
This course will help you with practical and pedagogic considerations in creating materials which can be shared with other teachers or a wider audience. The input, discussions and tasks will give you practice in how to create materials which engage and challenge the learner and instructions which are clear to a teacher. Feedback will be offered on a task that will be set during the course.

MODULE 1 Understanding language, methodology and resources for teaching This module allows participants to extend their background in knowledge and understanding of language, methodology and teaching resources. It also allows candidates to accredit prior learning and knowledge gained through teaching and experience.
MODULE 2 Developing Professional Practice Module two looks at developing candidates further through focusing on classroom practice, deepening the understanding of language, skills, principles underlying methodologies and approaches. It also allows candidates with an MA in ELT/ESOL or Applied Linguistics to gain more practical experience.
MODULE 3 Extending practice and English language teaching specialisation This module focuses on specialisation. It is for candidates who already specialise but do not possess a formal qualification in the area of expertise or for candidates who want to develop an understanding of a specialist area but have no experience. It can also be used for candidates who already hold a Delta or a formal qualification in a specialism but wish to gain an understanding of a further specialism. Some of the specialisms could include: > Business English > Young Learners > English for Specific Purposes > English for Academic Purposes > Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) > Exam Classes

ACCOMMODATION One of the best things about studying in London is that you get to experience this amazing city whilst you learn. We have a range of options for your accommodation needs, whether in homestay, house share, student residence or even a hotel. We offer our accommodation service to our clients, no matter whether they are here for an English course, teacher training programme or even a short orientation course.
IH London is in Zone One, in central London, close to Covent Garden, Holborn and Tottenham Court Road underground (Tube) lines.

Zone One
Zone Two
Zone Three
Zone Four
In Zone One, we have a selection of student residence and hotel options. It means you can walk to the School, or take a quick bus or underground ride. However, the cost of accommodation in the central area is higher than other parts of London.
This Zone is where a lot of commuters that work in Central London live. An average commute time to the school is 20-30 minutes by bus or the underground. In this Zone, we can offer a house share option. We also have a number of homestay families in Zone Two.
Zone Three is where most commuters that work in central London live. It offers a quieter area to live in, but it is still easy to get to and from the city centre. We offer homestay families in this area.
This is the farthest zone in which we have accommodation. We occasionally place students in homestay in this area. It takes about 35-40 minutes to commute from this zone. In this area, people often live in houses and not apartments, have gardens and live near parks. The Tube and buses operate in this area throughout the day and night, so you can still get around London without a problem.
43
ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS
Homestay This is a great option if you want to experience the comforts of home while staying in London. It will give you a chance to practise English at home and discover more about London, whilst living in a safe, family environment. All our homestay families are vetted and many have been working with us for a long time. We can offer single or twin homestay options. All homestay packages include breakfast but you can also choose to have four or seven evening meals a week with your family. There is also homestay available with a private bathroom option.
House or flat share Many of our clients enjoy living in house share. It allows more independence than homestay and is a social way to live and practise English, sharing with people from other countries and cultures. Rooms are single, twin or dormitory style and all rooms have desks. There is a communal space with a TV and a wellequipped kitchen. This is a self-catering option although there are plenty of food shops close by and most supermarkets offer delivery to your home. Bedding is provided and there are free laundry facilities onsite.
Halls of residence This is a popular option as it is walking distance or a quick journey by bus or Tube to the School. We can offer an ensuite room or a studio apartment. The halls also have access to a gym, as well as communal areas. We have a number of options to suit different budgets. The best thing about this accommodation is that you get to live and study in central London, meaning all the city’s attractions are either within walking distance or just a short ride away. Wi-Fi is available free of charge.

The guest house also has a beautiful garden in which to relax and it is close to great transport links into central London.
