Farewell to an Iconic Landmark

Normally this month my mind would be occupied by one thing and one thing only—the impending Bay Bridge Boat Show. And while that does in fact take up residence in my brain, there’s something overshadowing it this year: the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

This event was nothing short of a tragedy—lives were lost, and Baltimore lost an iconic landmark (read more on the history of the bridge on page 43). And even though I, and we, say “Baltimore,” the bridge encompasses more than just the city. True, it is the gateway to Baltimore Harbor, but it also connected the neighborhoods of Dundalk and Sparrows Point with Anne Arundel County and points south. For many in those neighborhoods, it was a roadway they traversed to and from work every day and a looming presence out their home or business windows. For it to suddenly be gone is unimaginable; the utter void in the skyline.

Like most people, I couldn’t even fathom the news when I first heard. I woke up planning to drive to Annapolis and instead was met with footage that looked like something out of a fictional disaster movie. Over the course of that day, March 26, I was glued to the TV. The more I watched, the sadder I became. And I just kept repeating, “it doesn’t feel real.” I’m sure many people in the area could empathize with that sentiment.

I am lucky enough to work from home several days a week, but each day I drove to Annapolis from my home in Middle River, the Key Bridge was my route of choice. Always. I never much liked crossing under a body of water (through the I-95 or I-895 tunnels), but unfortunately that will become my new reality. I will miss driving over the bridge in the morning, the fog curling over the water, but I will miss even more the sunsets on the ride home where I could sneak a glance at Fort Carroll far below out my passenger-side window.

A few days after the collapse, I drove through the I-95 Baltimore tunnel, but just before, I could see far out in the distance the remains of the Key Bridge and the MV Dali amidst the wreckage.

I know there is a long road to recovery ahead of us and I applaud all those working diligently to reopen the port. My thoughts go out to the family and friends of the individuals who lost their lives that day.

It is both heartening and poignant seeing so many people share their photos of the Key Bridge on social media, especially when so many have said: “I never thought this would be the last photo I took of it.”

How PropTalk Stays Focused on Local Boating

There’s a reason I’m the publisher and not an editor. I’m not a writer. I love my boats, boating, and being part of the boating community. I love working with our advertisers on marketing ideas and working with the amazing team that puts together SpinSheet, PropTalk, FishTalk, and PortBook. I know what I want to say, but I’m struggling to get started. I just keep writing, “How did I get so lucky?”

I am so lucky to be part of this team. When my friend Dave Gendell and I started SpinSheet in 1995, we were determined to make a magazine that Chesapeake sailors would love. From issue number one, we knew we’d succeeded. The community welcomed us with cheers—in some cases literally when we dropped off the first bundles of magazines and placed them in show goers’ hands at our first Annapolis Sailboat Show booth. The Chesapeake needed its own sailing magazine. We delivered it. Our advertisers supported us from the start, some of them prepaying for ads before even the first issue was printed. They, too, needed a magazine dedicated to the customers who support them.

Skee-Craft Boats

In the April Boatshop Reports, Captain Rick Franke shared a story of a fascinating barn find: a 1958 14-foot Skee Craft boat. What’s really fascinating is the story of how the boat found its way to the builder’s grandson (Chuck Hoober) many years later. We shared the story and photos on our Facebook page and loved seeing the responses from some of our readers who were familiar with the brand.

Michael Hume shared two photos of his boat, a 14-foot Skee-Craft he uses for crabbing. He says, “The funny thing is, mine is fiberglass with fiberglassed wood floorboards. Says it’s from PA, too. Nothing fancy.”

Neil Nelson commented, “Once in a while you will see a Skee-Craft for sale in the DE, PA, NJ, area; it is usually the 16-foot model. Good looking boat with a lot of character.”

Danny Buckingham also shared a beautiful photo of his 61-foot Skee-Craft that he says his grandparents bought new.

Seven Things to Remember for Spring Boating Days

Ah, the first sunny spring day on the boat! Have you ever gone to smear sunblock on yourself on such a day and discovered that it had a 1999 expiration date and the consistency of cottage cheese? Don’t let that happen this year. Here are seven tips for outfitting yourself and your onboard carry-on items for the season:

1. Sunblock. Is that sunblock on the boat more than a year old? Or wait, two years? Or wait, was that from Covid? Check the expiration date. If it’s three or more years old, throw it away and buy new sunblock for the season. If it doesn’t have an expiration date, yet you can’t remember where it came from and it has likely been left in the sunshine, throw it away and buy new sunblock. Most boaters prefer non-oily sunscreen products that don’t mess up the deck or cabin sole; others prefer “reef-safe” brands such as Blue Lizard, Harken Derm, Head Hunter, Raw Elements, and Waxhead.

2. Protective shirts and hats. Some boaters prefer SPF protection shirts and hats, which have become popular and more widespread in recent years. Among popular brands with a good selection are Columbia, Huk, Pelagic, Lands End, and Patagonia. You can find nice SPF shirts, shorts, pants, and hats at any good chandlery or boat show.

3. First aid kit. Most chandleries offer a pre-packaged marine first aid kit outfitted for boat-related emergencies. You may also create your own kit. Make sure to include bandages of varying sizes, steristrips, an ace bandage, non-latex gloves, Neosporin, Benadryl cream, aloe vera gel, ibuprofen, Tylenol, aspirin, Benadryl, Pepcid, Pepto-Bismol, and Dramamine, Bonine, or some other motionsickness medication. 4. Extra light. Don’t just rely on your smarphone as a flashlight on your boat; you can do better. Boaters inevitably will need extra light to see into dark compartments or to make their way into their home creek at night. Make sure your flashlight and

headlamps are working and that you have extra batteries handy.

5. Coolers and coozies. Every year at boat show time, we at PropTalk wrestle with a broken cooler lid and say, “We need a new cooler.” Have you reached the same conclusion with your own cooler? Don’t be like us; get a new one. Your friends and family will thank you when they reach for a cold one. Stop by the PropTalk booth at the Bay Bridge Boat Show (April 12-14) for new PropTalk and FishTalk coozies for the boat.

6. Towels and toys. Where are your beach towels? Are they still functional or have they turned into dog bed liners, absorbent pads for your leaky cooler, or moldy rags? Wouldn’t it be nice to have some fresh towels for that first dip into the Bay? Does your favorite floaty chair still inflate? How about the floating island for the kids? Inspect your onboard toys and make any replacements or additions before launch day.

7. Boat shoes. If it’s been a while since you upgraded your boat footwear, have a look at your selection of boat or water shoes or flip flops. If the bottoms are worn out and slippery, find something with better grips on the bottom. This may prevent an unnecessary fall and use of your new first aid kit (see #3).

4 Critical Paperwork Tasks When Selling a Boat

Spring is often prime boat-buying season, but before you sell a boat, you must know that you are not in the free and clear until critical paperwork is done right. BoatUS has a helpful seller’s paperwork to-do list to make sure there are no surprises.

1 Cancel the boat insurance policy. This is the first thing most boat sellers do right. It’s super important to cancel a vessel’s insurance policy once the sale goes through. Not doing so potentially adds unnecessary risk and potential liability to the seller. Also don’t forget to cancel any automatic bank payments that were set up to pay policy premiums.

2 Release the DSC-VHF radio’s Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number. If you’re selling your boat, remember a key fact about MMSIs: Once issued, the MMSI number stays assigned

to the boat (installed VHF radios). The emergency contact information, among other data, requires updating. If a seller forgets to release the MMSI number to the buyer, a future mayday distress aboard the vessel could delay first responders. BoatUS members can release or update an MMSI for no cost at BoatUS.com/MMSI.

3 A seller will need to ensure an Emergency Position-Indicating Rescue Beacon (EPIRB) attached to the boat is updated with new owner contact information. To update an EPIRB go to NOAA’s Beacon Registration site and change the status to “Sold/Transferred.” Once this happens, the new owner can register the beacon in their name with their own emergency contact information.

4 Contact the state boat registration agency to advise them that the boat was sold. Sending a letter by mail or email to your state’s boat registration agency

acknowledging the boat has a new owner may help prevent future misdirected registration renewal notices. In some states it is a legal requirement to report any change in vessel ownership status within a certain number of days with the name of the purchaser, purchase price, and date of sale.

Donation of Holly Beach Farm

On March 13, the Maryland Board of Public Works approved the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) accepting the donation of Holly Beach Farm, a 293-acre waterfront property in Anne Arundel County, from the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF).

“This is a remarkable opportunity for all Marylanders to experience the Chesapeake Bay,” said Governor Wes Moore. “I offer my thanks to the many partners who helped make today’s transfer happen, including our friends at the National Park Service, the Conservation Fund, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and Mrs. Leonie Gately, who had the vision to protect this land for the future…”

Closing will be completed in the next several months after the DNR completes its due diligence. After the transfer process is complete, the department will maintain the property as a Natural Resources Management Area.

“Holly Beach Farm is a unique and sensitive natural resource of significant ecological value to the Chesapeake Bay,” said Maryland DNR secretary Josh Kurtz. “With more than 90 percent of the Bay’s shoreline in private ownership, it’s imperative that we offer new ways for people to enjoy the wonders of the Chesapeake…”

Public access is a critical element to the future of the property and the requirements of the acquisition. The department is planning to provide prescriptive and measured public access to Holly Beach Farm with a focus on unique water access opportunities as a featured component.

The property is served by a single lane road and consists of forested areas, open fields, a freshwater pond, and beaches along the Chesapeake Bay and Whitehall Bay. It will be managed by the Maryland Park Service with shared resources and vision from the department’s wildlife and Bay resilience experts, all with an eye toward conservation and limited, nature-based recreation.

The property was part of a 3000-acre estate and summer home of industrialist magnate Sylvester Labrot, who built a mansion there in 1908. It remained in private ownership until 2001, when the Conservation Fund acquired the

Holly Beach property and conveyed it to CBF to manage it for conservation and environmental education. The former owner, Leonie Gately, preserved the property and sold it for conservation purposes, despite more lucrative and regular requests from developers.

In October 2023, CBF issued a Request for Expressions of Interest seeking a new steward with a proven ability to manage

conserved lands in a way that honors the intent of the original landowner and funding sources. Following that process, the foundation announced that the DNR had been selected as the new owner of the 293-acre waterfront peninsula.

Fishing Is for Everyone

This spring, two Chesapeake Bay organizations plan to take anglers in wheelchairs and/or those with disabilities and their families out on the water.

Fish Redeemer has been taking wheelchair-bound anglers out fishing since 2021.

“The genesis of Fish Redeemer is the personal realization of the hardship of those that are wheelchair bound and

the sacrificial lives of the caregivers involved,” says Jo-Anne Kehmna, board member for the Maryland nonprofit.

Starting in April, Redeemer, a Composite Yacht (CY) 46 classic Chesapeake Bay deadrise-style boat, will depart from St. Jerome’s Creek in Ridge, MD, providing the opportunity for a disabled

person along with their family a day of fishing. The grounds and dock have been designed specifically for the needs and concerns of wheelchair-bound guests. Grades and paths are graded and maintained for easy mobility. There is a shaded arbor located at the edge of the parking lot to provide a reprieve from the sun.

Trips cost $200 for the entire day for veterans; $350 for non-veterans. Kehmna says that sometimes people think that the opportunity “sounds too good to be true.”

Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB) will offer its first fishing trips starting in June out of Annapolis. CRAB president Paul Bollinger admits that as a program providing the therapeutic benefits of sailing to people with disabilities, recovering warriors, and youth from underserved communities, he wasn’t so sure about fishing (and the fish smell). When a group came to CRAB’s Adaptive Boating Center from Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), they changed their minds.

Bollinger says, “We took them down the docks. They saw our sailboats, saw our (40-foot) Gemini powercat, and said, ‘We want to go out on that and go fishing.’ We said, “Okay, we’ll do that.’”

To outfit the powercat, the CRAB team has added rodholders and fishing gear to the boat.

Bollinger says, “More importantly, we recruited a fishing guide, George Turner, an avid fisherman and oysterman, to lead the groups.”

Starting in June, CRAB will take out groups of wheelchair-bound anglers and others with disabilities for bottom fishing (perch, spot, and croaker) in the shoals around Annapolis. To learn more, email Shannon Rohrer at shannon@crabsailing.org

Remembering the Francis Scott Key Bridge

On March 26, at approximately 1:30 a.m., a cargo ship leaving the Port of Baltimore struck the I-695 Francis Scott Key Bridge leading to its collapse.

Like most people, we were shocked and saddened by the news, not only because Baltimore had lost a great landmark, but more importantly, because lives were lost as well.

As the salvage operations are ongoing in order to reopen the port to vessel traffic, we wanted to take a moment to look back on the history of this iconic landmark.

The outer crossing of the Baltimore harbor opened in 1977 as the final link in the I-695 Baltimore Beltway. Including the Francis Scott Key Bridge and connecting roadways, the project was 10.9 miles in length and was the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore’s Harbor.

The bridge itself was a steel arch continuous truss-style bridge that extended over the lower Patapsco River and outer Baltimore Harbor. When planning began for a second harbor crossing, another tunnel was initially proposed as the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel, which opened in 1957, had reached its traffic capacity. When it appeared that costs would be too high, officials began drafting alternative plans which included a four-lane bridge, which was eventually approved. A bridge presented the best alternative because it allowed for more traffic lanes and carried lower operating and maintenance costs than a tunnel. And while vehicles transporting hazardous chemicals are prohibited in the harbor tunnels, a bridge would provide them with a route across the harbor. Construction began in 1972.

While the bridge was still being built, it was named in honor of Francis Scott

Key in 1976. After witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore on September 12, 1814, Key penned the poem “The Defense of Fort McHenry,” which later inspired our national anthem, “The Star Spangled Banner.” Key had been aboard a ship in Baltimore Harbor near Sollers Point, and it is believed that that location is just 100 yards from where the bridge was eventually built.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge officially opened to traffic on March 23, 1977, and it collapsed 47 years later on the week that it opened. While the road to recovery will be a long one, we know the city of Baltimore will persevere. We applaud all of the first responders, port workers, salvage operations crews, and all those who are working tirelessly to reopen the port. but the way this space is utilized makes it perfect for a multigenerational crowd. The bow cockpit converts between seating for five around a cocktail table to a triple-wide mega-lounger. The aft cockpit boasts L-shaped seating around a dinette table. The helm deck has three forward-facing seats. And belowdecks you’ll find a dinette (which converts into a V-berth) with a sunroof and opening hull side windows to create a crossbreeze. Between all these different social areas multiple age groups can enjoy their own place to converse, mix, and mingle.

As for spending extended time aboard, that forward V-berth is utterly huge, and you’ll have plenty of room for stretching out. There’s a private stateroom located amidships, carved out under the helm deck with a double berth plus another single. The head compartment is roomier than one might expect and has a separate stall shower. And

while there’s also a galley in the cabin, you won’t have to leave the abovedeck party in order to cook because there’s also an outdoor kitchen with an electric grill—burgers, anyone?— behind the helm seating. Jeanneau takes a page out of the center console playbook with the arrangement, mounting the kitchen unit behind the seats and mounting hard top supports to its sides. This allows them to provide a rather huge hard top, which has an extending sunshade running aft and can be extended forward over the bow cockpit with a convertible sunshade. In fact, you can shade this entire boat from stem to stern.

There are other boats in this size range that can check all the boxes we’ve addressed so far, but most offer performance that’s more depressing than dazzling. Not so, with the Leader 12.5. This boat can handle triple outboards across the

e’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: the Bay Bridge Boat Show is the unofficial kickoff to the boating season. So, you know what that means? It’s time to celebrate! The spring thaw has arrived, boats are being splashed, and we have another beautiful season on the Chesapeake to look forward to. We’ve compiled this show guide to help you plan your visit. Each course offers three hours on the water and is capped at three to four students (ages 18 and older). Courses cost $175 and include admission to the boat show. United States coast Guard auxiliary Boating Safety class

Join Lynn Disque of the USCG Auxiliary for a two-hour family friendly class for all ages introducing boating safety on the water. Topics include navigation, rules of the road, boat equipment including the VHF radio, emergency equipment, weather, trailering your boat, and much more. 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13. Outside the Show Gates

Coming to town for the Bay Bridge Boat Show? Why not make a weekend of it?

Here are three fun things to do in Queen anne’s County outside of the show gates. Find more ideas at visitqueenannes.com and at proptalk.com/see-bay-queen-annes-county.

1. Get outside.

The Chesapeake Bay Environmental Center (CBEC), just south of Kent Narrows, is situated on a 510-acre preserve. Visitors can explore native woodlands, tidal marshes, and meadows, all through specially designed self-guided experiences. CBEC is known as a birding hotspot, with over 240 species of birds found there throughout the year. There is no admission fee to explore the property on your own, but donations are appreciated to help maintain trails. Visit bayrestoration.org to learn more about various hiking trails and pick up a trail map from the Visitor Center. To bring your dog to CBEC, you must be a member and purchase a membership for your furry friend (memberships cost $35 for individuals and $20 per dog).

The Cross Island Trail offers a safe avenue for non-vehicular transportation. It is 6.5 miles long, spanning east to west from Terrapin Park to the Chesapeake Heritage and Visitor Center at Kent Narrows, with future plans for expansion. The trail wanders through farmlands, meadows, and woods accented with ornamental trees. Flanked by park benches, the trail crosses several creeks with wooden bridges, offering a spectacular view of waterfowl and wetlands. Portable toilets are available year-round. There is no entrance fee and dogs are allowed on leash.

Terrapin Nature Park is an award-winning 276-acre park that features a 3.25-mile oyster chaff walking trail which meanders through wildflower meadows, wetlands, tidal ponds, woodlands, and sandy shoreline. The trail provides a unique vantage point for viewing an incredible variety of waterfowl, wildlife, and plant species. A gazebo is located along the sandy shoreline providing a spectacular view of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Park benches are located along the trail, which also features several bridges and two observation blinds overlooking the tidal ponds. The trail connects to the County’s Cross Island Trail system. Nearby parking for the Cross Island Trail system is available at Old Love Point Park.

3. Try Your hand at Sporting clays

Situated on the banks of the Wye River, the Point at Pintail is nationally recognized as a premier location for sporting clay tournaments and outings. Sporting clays is often referred to as “golf with a gun.” Instead of sinking a ball into a hole, shooters aim to break targets along a designated course. Shooting options include 25 diverse shooting stations offering an exciting array of targets. A well-maintained golf cart and walking path meanders through 55 acres of picturesque landscape accented with natural vegetation, scenic river views, and an assortment of distinctive gazebos. Whether you’re experienced or a novice, this place offers something for everyone with a variety of packages and lessons. Reservations are highly recommended. 2. Play Golf.

If you would like to play golf waterside and arrive by boat, check out Queenstown Harbor Golf Course on Queenstown Creek (38 degrees 59.92 N, 76 degrees 09.75 W). Queenstown Harbor Golf is home to a world-class driving range and practice facilities that are open to the public and ideal for the amateur and pro golfer alike. The River Course is consistently rated as having some of the best golf in Maryland and the Washington, DC area. Reopened at the beginning of 2011 after a thoughtful and extensive renovation, several holes were moved closer to the Chester River, and all bunkering was updated to create a windswept design that mimics the natural landscape of the site, optimizes shot values, and ensures superior conditioning.

If arriving by boat, the entrance to the creek is located on the northeast shore of the Chester River between Coursey Point and Blakeford Point. The Boat House is just inside the creek behind Coursey Point. Upon entering the creek, the Boat House, consisting of two large white structures, is located directly starboard (right) of the #3 day marker (a green square sign on a pole with the number 3 painted on it). Be sure to check the tide level and the draft of your vessel before attempting to dock. Please tie up at the newly renovated docks; do not enter the Boat House. And be sure to call ahead to ensure a golf cart is waiting for you upon arrival. Water and electricity are available dockside, and if you are playing golf, there is no daytime docking fee. Swashbuckling pirates aplenty. Watermen roaring up the docks in a sea of foam. Lazy sunsets enjoyed from the deck of your boat. Easy music to enjoy at one of the Eastern Shore’s premier venues. Old time hospitality at a 90-year-old bar. Cutting edge cuisine or laid down home cooking at one of the town’s more than a dozen eateries.

Having survived storms, fishing regulations, and the shift from commercial to recreational fishing, Rock Hall residents have fought hard to retain the town’s traditional flavor.

A bit of history

A fishing settlement has existed near Rock Hall since the 1600s, and the town became a stopover for colonial travelers. George Washington passed through Rock Hall eight times, traveling there by boat from Annapolis and proceeding by horseback onto Philadelphia. Later, Rock Hall was a shipping center for agricultural products such as pears, peaches, and tomatoes.

Some say Rock Hall got its name from an unusually large “haul” of rockfish (striped bass). Indeed, as Kent County Commissioner and former commercial fisherman Ronnie Fithian says, “Without exaggeration, there was more tonnage of rockfish caught out of this little town than any one town on the entire East Coast of the United

States.” Recreational fishermen, who began traveling to Rock Hall around the 1880s, also caught rockfish.

The mid-1980s moratorium on commercial and recreational rockfish fishing affected many fishermen in Rock Hall. Some went into clamming, eeling, and crabbing; many others stopped fishing altogether. The commercial dock area of Rock Hall harbor called Hubbard’s Pier was sold, and the harbor was dredged to accommodate deep-draft recreational sailboats. The historic Rock Hall Mansion was torn down, and condominiums were built in its place. New, full-service marinas and businesses opened, and the town became a popular destination for recreational boaters.

Pirates, Fireworks, Music & More

During the Pirates and Wenches Festival, this year held August 9-11, there’s nonstop action as the town shows its wild side with bands of marauding pirates roaming the streets much to the delight of the more than 5000-plus visitors who crowd the town in search of grog and fun. A little sea chanty celebrating Rock Hall’s fictitious pirate history goes like this:

“Hail Rock Hall, Hail Rock Hall

Long live Graybeard—Pirates are we all Pirates are we all—pirates are we all Long live Graybeard—Hail Rock Hall”

And one of the Eastern Shore’s most ambitious Fourth of July Weekends unfolds across the little hamlet with food,

fireworks, and the not-to-be-missed Waterman’s Festival. (See sidebar for key events and dates.)

But these two signature events are just part of the reasons boaters of all shapes and sizes traditionally give the little town of 1200 a “thumbs up” as a premier boating destination no matter the season.

“We do our best to put on a good show during our festivals,” says Mayor James Cook. “But a lot of visitors like our quiet weekends, too, where you can chill out by the water at one of our boater-friendly restaurants or bars or just sit back on your own boat and watch the sun meet the Bay in one of our spectacular sunsets.”

If music is your thing, be sure to check out the summer offerings at the venerable Mainstay. This funky music venue has something for every musical taste from rootsy rock to Appalachian folk… all served up in a 100-year-old storefront that has played host to jazz greats like guitarist Charlie Byrd in its storied history. The Mainstay is particularly renowned for its reputation for jazz excellence dating back to our earliest concerts and continuing to the present day with acclaimed jazz figures from all along the Eastern seaboard. One brand new fun music themed event is Porch Fest, May 26. Several notable properties around town host live music on porches, gazebos, and stages throughout the day.

Eateries

Wandering down Main Street with a dripping ice cream cone in your hand is one way to kick back and enjoy the small town feel of Rock Hall. Guests are encouraged to slow down, smell the roses, and partake of an ice cream cone or milkshake from one of Main Street’s two ice cream stores, the venerable Durdings and Get the Scoop.

Rock Hall has been busy adding new establishments to its already array of dining destinations, including:

! Blue Heron (great food with occasional “celebrity watermen” oyster shuckers who raise money for the Waterman’s Association; casual deck with games and music and more refined but still semi-casual indoor seating).

! The Rock (local seafood in a casual atmosphere; great weekend brunch).

! The Rock City Café (great spot for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Pizzas, too).

Add these to the Harbor Shack and Waterman’s Crab House for a great taste of the Shore and you can see Rock Hall has something to suit every taste. Both venues offer a view, plus plenty of fresh Eastern Shore seafood. For a little more upscale dining, the Inn at Osprey Point offers white-tablecloth service featuring creamy lobster bisque and its signature crab cakes. Wednesdays are burger nights. And for the morning caffeine fix, get your cup of Joe at Java Rock on Sharp Street.

No visit to Rock Hall would be complete without a stop at the nearly 100-year-old bar, Maggies. Maggie’s Tavern (established in 1932) is celebrating 92 years of continuous family ownership. channel leads to an anchorage basin at the west end of the harbor, then eastward paralleling the waterfront at Rock Hall to a basin at the east end of the harbor. There are a number of marinas in and around the Rock Hall area. They include:

Marinas fill up during special events. Be sure to make plans ahead of time. Have a great time. And don’t mind the muck. Pirates and Wenches Weekend, August 9-11

Now in its 17th year, the festival boasts a full measure of aarghing for mateys young and old (5000 of them last year). Highlights include a decorated dinghy contest, rum tasting, a Caribbean-style beach party, sea shanty sing-along, and enough Pirates and Wenches strolling around to make Captain Jack Sparrow proud (rockhallpirates.com).

Electronics Integration 101

Marine electronics have changed quite a bit over the past decade. Many boat owners are at that critical stage of: “Do I replace it all, or just the MFD, etc.?” With so many new devices on the market and such bright, beautiful displays, one can’t help but be starry eyed.

Once you’ve decided that the big ‘all in one package’ is not in the plans this year, you move towards replacing a portion of your vessel’s electronics system. Let’s say you are going to replace just the multi-function display (MFD)/chartplotter and try to leave the rest. The next big question is what’s going to work, and what’s not going to work? This is the important thing to think about: integration.

When it comes to integration, you can look at it in two parts. First is sharing simple data, like GPS coordinates or water temperature, across the system. Second is sharing complex data, like video or radar, across the system. # If

Simple Data

Let’s focus on simple data first. For many this will be the less challenging of the two. The National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) has been around for over five decades. Many years ago, they began developing a standardized protocol for marine electronics manufacturers to use. This protocol created a universal way for electronics to share information between different manufacturers. Since NMEA began they have had four iterations including NMEA 0180, 0182, 1083, and currently NMEA 2000. There is also work in place for

the next generation, ONE-NET, which should be here in a few years. The current Version, NMEA 2000, is used for moving simple data and has been around since around 2005. What this protocol does is allow marine electronics to both generate and receive simple data, such as numbers, to everyone on the network at once. Remember, no complex data (like video) can travel through this network. That’s very important to understand. What does that mean? Here is a list of some of the data that can travel through NMEA 2000:

• GPS Position

• Fuel levels

• AIS data

• Course over ground

• Engine RPM

• Outside temp

• Water depth

• Engine oil pressure

• Outside humidity

• Water temp

• Trim tab level

• Wind data

Consider everything as there are thousands of these data points. Each one is given a number, called a PGN, and each PGN is associated with a data point.

So now we know that if your boat currently has a NMEA 2000 system, 95 percent of the new marine electronics items you might be looking at will be NMEA capable. Everyone currently supports the NMEA protocol; a few might require a small box to generate it though. So, as I said earlier, the simple data side is the easy part. With NMEA the headache is taken care of. Build the NMEA network, make sure the devices can and are receiving or generating the correct PGNs you are looking for, and you are done. You can match a Garmin AIS to a Raymarine chartplotter. In the back of almost all marine electronics manuals and on most websites, you will find a list of supported PGNs.

The important part of this comes into play with autopilots. All the data

a functioning autopilot system needs is a few PGN codes, and it can work standalone. An autopilot does not need a chartplotter as it is built to function all on its own. It can get GPS location, heading, and rudder feedback all through NMEA.

One final note on NMEA: if your boat doesn’t currently have a NMEA 2000 system and is, say, still using the last generation NMEA 0183 system, it is still possible to upgrade. The trick is you need a NMEA 0183 to NMEA 2000 converter. This will take in the old 0183 data and convert it to 2000 for your new equipment to process. It works the other way as well. Now this is where things get tricky—it can sometimes take a lot of work to get all the devices communicating. This is where it might be time to get the system replaced, due to costs.

Complex Data

Now we get into the complex data side of things. Here is where things get sticky. Marine manufacturers seem to refuse to share video data with each

other. Each manufacturer has its own proprietary video network to share radar and sonar data. So therein lies the problem. You can’t replace the Raymarine chartplotter with a new Garmin and expect the radar portion to still function. The same applies to a system where it uses an external black box to process sonar data. These units are also processing

complex data and sending it along the manufacturer’s proprietary network.

Now most chartplotters have an HDMI or BNC connection on the back to take in complex data. That is not the type of data we are referring to. The data we are referring to allows us to not only view it but manipulate it, meaning control the radar and the sonar. With

HDMI and BNC, you can send in a picture, but you have no control over it.

Backwards Compatibility

The final part of this is backwards compatibility, which is the ability to connect to legacy or outdated equipment of the same manufacturer. Say you want to replace your old Garmin screen connected to an old radar. In this case you might be able to upgrade just the screen. This is where things look bright again. Most manufacturers at this point are supporting their older equipment from 10 years ago. Every manufacturer and part are different, but I find the average to be around seven to 10 years.

This backwards compatibility helps tremendously with integration. If you like your current manufacturer and your equipment is recent, there is a good chance you can connect the new Raymarine screen to your old Raymarine radar.

Transducers

Now on a final note, let’s talk transducers. Things can be a bit muddled here, but there is some logic.

Discover a career in

“Most” transducers found on older boats are going to be made by a company called Airmar. Some marine electronics companies over the past five to 10 years began coming out with their own versions, due to costs. This will generally be a small transducer mounted on a transom. More than likely this type of transducer will be part of your new MFD upgrade. So, I’ll focus on trying to keep the current Airmar transducer with your new MFD.

Over the years transducers have changed a bit, but their basic internal functioning is the same. The good thing about that is every manufacturer offers a “bare wire box” to splice your old transducer. If you have a Simrad system and want a Raymarine MFD, Raymarine offers a box—you can cut the Simrad connector off, connect it to the small weatherproof box with a terminal strip inside, and plug the pigtail coming out of it into the new Raymarine MFD. The manufacturers were smart enough to understand that changing the transducer is often the hardest part of an upgrade and they needed to make that easy. They preload Airmar’s transducer list into the MFD and will often even

allow you to manually program transducer configuration.

Now I’ll end the discussion with these four notes:

• The above discussion will apply to 90 percent of the applications. For boats that have rarer/more complicated systems and/or high-performance systems, the above generalizations might not always apply.

• If you are purchasing equipment for a DIY installation, make sure to seek out a reputable supplier that will be a phone call away. When you have complications or need to return something, you want them to support you.

• If you are performing a DIY installation, please review and adhere to the NMEA and ABYC guidelines. Assume nothing, and safety is a must with electricity on a vessel.

• If you are not performing a DIY install and working with a dedicated marine electronics installer, make sure you and the outfit you hire have the upgrade clearly outlined and that they are following the above guidelines.

Carolina o n My Mind

I’ll be honest, working at a boating publication for over a decade can certainly cause a serious case of boat envy. I’m grateful to have had plenty of opportunities to enjoy other people’s boats, and I have no problem hitting the water on my kayaks. But deep down I have long yearned for a boat of my own, and I knew that if I was patient that one day the right opportunity would present itself.

Well, this day turned out to be the Fourth of July in the summer of 2023. I was having a casual conversation about crabbing with my friend Sean at a backyard barbeque when he told me his dad Mike had an old boat just sitting unused in his driveway. He wasn’t looking for much, but rather he just wanted it to go

to someone who would use it. We soon set up a time to meet and I went to take a gander at his 2004 Carolina Skiff J16. To be honest, I was never particularly fond of the look of these boats in the past but after taking a closer look, I realized that being an avid kayaker, a skiff was the perfect boat for me. The J16 was sitting on a 1984 Sears bunk trailer and had a 1996 Johnson 48 SPL on the transom. I was told it ran strong when it last ran, which was an indeterminate number of years. The boat, motor, and trailer all needed some major attention. I knew I had my work cut out for me, but I was up for the challenge. We drew up a bill of sale and Mike signed the titles to me for such an unbelievable price I thought it was too good to be true.

This skiff had been sitting uncovered for several years and was badly weather stained by organic material, so the first step was to wash down the boat as best as possible. Several passes using Star Brite Ultimate Extreme Clean spray, Magic Sponges, and some elbow grease did an amazing job of cleaning up the interior of the boat, as well as the hull. I removed some of the hardware that the previous owner installed and stripped most of the boat down in preparation for reassembly, as most of the components on the center console were dismantled upon purchase.

The Outboard

Before working on anything else, I wanted to determine if the 1996 Johnson would even start up. Hooking up an old battery proved that the starter was working just fine; however, the motor didn’t even try to turn over. The fuel line and tank were very old and showed signs of deterioration at the seals, so I went ahead and replaced them with a new 12-gallon Moeller tank to start fresh. This old two-stroke has dual carburetors, so tearing these down and cleaning them out was the first thing to do. Luck would have it that my local marine store had two carb kits for this nearly 30-year-old motor in stock. I took my time to carefully remove the carburetors, to insure I did not lose any one of the dozens of screws, bolts, pins, or springs holding these together. The float bowls visibly had considerable build up, so I used a small wire brush along with several cans

of carb cleaner spray to thoroughly clean all jets and ports. The key components to install in the carb kits were the new seals to replace the old cracked and dry rotted ones. Before I reassembled, I made sure to adjust the angles of the carb floats per specifications. After the carburetors were reinstalled, I replaced the sparks plugs and gapped new ones to spec. I filled the fuel tank with standard 87 octane gasoline, mixed 50:1 with Quicksilver two-stroke synthetic blend oil, and treated with a small amount of marine Techron.

The motor fired right up, and despite it running about as rough and loud as you would expect a 1996 two-stroke would, IT WAS RUNNING! Unfortunately, there was no water circulating. So, I headed back to the marine store and believe it or not I was lucky again to find a water pump kit in stock for this old outboard. I spent some time researching YouTube on how to do the replacement process and I found that watching a few different videos on the same subject helped sift through the possible trials and errors one might encounter. I first removed the shift linkage and then the four bolts to disconnect the lower unit from the mid-section, being careful not to damage the spline end of the shaft as it dropped out. The shift linkage rod pulled out two rubber gaskets, which I’d have to figure how to reinstall later.

I dismantled the water pump and quickly discovered that the seals were badly deteriorated. The impeller was in okay shape but was due for replacement. All surfaces and cavities were thoroughly cleaned. The new kit included a new water pump housing, shaft key, impeller, and new seals. I applied gasket sealer liberally and placed the new seals before reinstalling the impeller and pump housing. I went ahead and replaced the lower unit gear oil while the lower unit was removed from the outboard. Then, I reinstalled the lower unit by carefully sliding the shaft and linkage rod back up into the mid-section. I slid the two rubber gaskets back on to the linkage rod prior to installation. The top gasket was a bit tricky to get seated back in its positions at the top of the shaft, but a long flathead screwdriver helped to pop it into place.

I started the motor, and it was running well; however, water was still not pumping out. The new water pump kit did not come with a new O-ring, and I neglected to reinstall the old one, so the impeller was not seated correctly. So, I repeated the process and reassembled the lower unit the correct way.

Moment of truth… I engaged the choke, turned the key, and the motor fired up in its true loud and obnoxious two-stroke form.

next Steps

Now that I had a functional outboard, I had to get the rest of the boat in order. This was a simple task compared to the motor rebuild, as all that was necessary was to reinstall the console and cable

steering. Or so I thought… The old steering cable had rusted and snapped off. Removing it was easy, but so much rust had built up inside the steering tube on the outboard that I had to MacGyver a tool to fix it. I wrapped heavy grit sandpaper around a plumbing snake and attached it to an electric drill. I inserted this device into the tube and worked on it for nearly half an hour before I opened it up enough to fit the new steering cable in correctly. I was lucky that my local marine store also had the proper steering cable in stock!

The next step was running the cable to the steering wheel on the console. Since the Carolina Skiff J16 does not have a bilge to channel cables through the hull, they are secured underneath an above deck fiberglass cable chase. I had to modify the steering column slightly and install a new helm bezel, but once that was complete the cable worked easily into the steering assembly. I installed a Humminbird Helix fish finder onto the console and ran the cables down the same route as the steering. I also replaced the light switches and tidied up the wiring somewhat.

Once the windshield was installed, I was nearly complete. I used marine sealant to fill the screw holes in the deck and used new stainless screws to secure the fiberglass cable chase covering the wiring running to the stern of the boat. I secured the fuel tank using a cooler mounting kit and strapped down the batteries utilizing existing pad eyes on the deck below the bench seat. Finally, I was satisfied with the form and function of the boat. But before I

hit the water, I needed the trailer to be refitted to get it there.

The trailer was originally built in 1984, but the frame was still in great shape. I replaced the winch and strap as well as safety chains. The LED taillights worked but were sometimes intermittent. I rewired all corroded connections with heat shrink and replaced marker lights with LEDs. The most expensive components were the new tires, new hubs, and bearing kits. Learning how all these parts are assembled on the axle was rewarding and surely will come in handy should a roadside emergency occur. Once I popped on the bearing buddies and greased up, I was confident it would pass inspection. I’d also like to note that by way of online appointment, scheduling, titling, and tagging of the boat and trailer with both the DNR and MVA respectively was a breeze.

After a few months of use, I had some issues with the motor refusing to start. Upon inspection I found some small red plastic pieces in the fuel line that indicated that I needed to install an inline fuel filter to prevent any particles from the fuel tank passing up through the carburetor jets. I also removed the fuel pump and cleaned out the filter screen with carb cleaner. While I was at it, I noticed a few of the plastic connectors and hose clamps needed to be replaced to seal up the

fuel lines and did so with stainless hose clamps and zip ties where applicable.

Seldom is there a day where I am not thinking about the boat or what else I need to work on next. All in all, I estimate that I spent around 40 hours getting the boat into shape, but with far less than the price of some of the fancy fishing kayaks on the market. I now own a functional boat that cruises 30 mph to my favorite fishing grounds. In just a few months it has already assisted me in

catching and releasing some keeper-size rockfish, a whole mess of white perch, and a half bushel of crabs. Aside from a few fishing road trips adventures this year, my plans include upgrading to a modern and more efficient four-stroke outboard, adding an electric motor, and a new fish finder. But for now, I’m pretty sure you’ll hear me coming… glug glug glugga glug. #

Skin Cancer

test came back negative, he sewed up the incision and off I went. I was lucky; he got all the cancer in the first cut.

Chances are if you are reading this magazine, you own a boat, and if you have gotten this far in, you probably fish. Both activities require being out in the sun during the worst time of the day, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

I love the sun, although it has been cruel to my family. First, my son Ric had skin cancer and then my wife Barbara had it. Thankfully, both have survived. Then in 2023 I got a bump on my left cheek. At first, I thought it was a pimple, but it wouldn’t pop. Then I thought it was an ingrown hair, but when my dermatologist checked it and took a sample, the results came back—a melanoma.

When I read that word, I got scared. I had a very good friend, Paul Scarbough, who had skin cancer on one of his toes and even after they removed one of his legs, he still died. Those of us Parrotheads all know about Jimmy Buffett who died from skin cancer just last year.

My dermatologist made an appointment with a plastic surgeon who does skin cancer removal operations, and within a week I was sitting in his office having the offending lump taken out of my cheek. He removed layers of the skin, and each layer was tested for the presence of cancer. Once the

I have been seeing my dermatologist annually for many years. She checks me out from head to toe and usually finds some pre-cancerous spots that she freezes off with what I call the Torture Gun. While the discomfort is temporary, the fact that she is removing something that could become skin cancer and take my life makes the little bit of pain more than worthwhile. Since I have now had skin cancer, she has moved me up to every six months.

During my last visit, I asked her what the most important thing people who spend lots of time outside on the water can do to protect themselves from the harmful rays of the sun. She answered: wear protective clothing.

I know my son Ric wears those shirts and a face covering, and late last fall I received a shirt and face mask from Fieldshear that I plan to wear this spring and into the summer. Ric said these new materials are so well made they are actually cooler than short-sleeved shirts or even going shirtless.

I then asked her about lotion. She replied that SPF 30 was the minimum, so that is what I always use.

During the same visit, she found a growth she didn’t like on my left ear. Once again, she removed a piece of the thing and sent it out to the lab for testing. I was on pins and

needles for a few days until her office called with the results. This time no cancer. Boy, what a relief!

As I saw with my friend Paul, skin cancer can show up anywhere on your body. You are your own first line of defense. As you shower or bathe, check yourself out and if you find something unusual as I did on my left cheek, do not hesitate. Get to a dermatologist right away. I was already seeing mine on an annual basis, but when I found that lump on my cheek, I called and made an appointment.

There are all different types of skin cancer, and no matter what type you have, early detection is key to a successful outcome.

The Annapolis Boat Shows produce four boat shows a year: the Bay Bridge Boat Show (April 1214), Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show (April 26-28), Annapolis Powerboat Show (October 3-6), and the Annapolis Sailboat Show (October 10-14). With the spring shows right around the corner, we caught up with Peter Alexander to discuss his work in operations.

Could you please describe your work for us at the Annapolis Boat Shows. My job at the Annapolis Boat Shows is to handle the operations and logistics. I coordinate the installation of our four shows with our equipment, our employees, multiple contractors, and public officials who oversee where our shows are located. We have three days to move in, and during that installation we literally create a working marina and mini-mall filled with boats and vendors.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I have two things about my job that are just fantastic. The first is the people. I get to work with hundreds of people throughout the year who come together to help put on the shows. Many are regulars who come back year after year, some only come for a season, but all have wonderful stories to tell. Second is the move in. Planning takes months and months and can be very tedious. But when you start moving in there is a rush of adrenaline and I just love it.

What is the hardest part of your job?

The worst part of the job is something you can’t control and that’s Mother Nature. There is nothing more miserable than a nor’easter when you are moving into the show. You only have three days or so to move in and you can’t stop for bad weather.

What kind of boating do you do in your spare time?

Currently I’m boatless. I enjoy spending afternoons and evenings on friends’ boats. I’ve been fortunate to have been able to cruise from the Bahamas to Halifax over the years and truly enjoy deliveries. In the past I’ve

had a sportfisherman and a center console. I’m kind of in the market for another center console.

Did you grow up boating or take up the hobby later in life?

I didn’t grow up boating; I grew up on a horse. I didn’t discover boating until I came to work for the Annapolis Boat Shows in the late 80s. I was hooked the first night I went sailing under a full moon. It was an incredible experience.

What do you love most about living and working on the Chesapeake Bay? I live in Eastport, and I don’t think you could find a better place to live.

Surrounded by waters on three sides, it’s just heaven on earth. It’s a small little town where everyone knows you and you have everything you could possibly imagine within walking distance. I’ve been fortunate in my life to have lived from one side of this country to the other and several places in between, and life on the Chesapeake is truly remarkable.

Two Exciting Vintage Events in Southern Maryland

It’s that time of year again to make your plans to include a pleasant day in a St. Mary’s County tradition in Piney Point Maryland. The Southern Maryland Boat Club will once again wake up Saint George’s Creek with the exciting vintage series outboard raceboats on June 8 and 9. Plan on enjoying real race boats and a few past competition champion drivers show their fans how agile and fast around the historic racecourse their hulls truly are.

The club will also present a second event at Historic Leonardtown Wharf Park on July 27 and 28. Spectators will revel in the setting with Breton Bay’s awesome views. This event will be close to the downtown area of Leonardtown, MD, named after

Leonard Calvert, Lord Baltimore who was the first governor of Maryland.

Leonardtown was established in 1708 as the county seat. The town itself, which was established in 1660 as Seymour Town and changed to Leonardtown in 1708, is a destination walking town with many shops and eateries.

These non-competitive events still offer great opportunities to witness the speeds and sounds so many fans look forward to each year. Free admission, free parking, food trucks, ice cream trucks, and souvenirs will provide spectator pleasures, and the pits will be open for up close and personal observations, pictures, and conversations with

the drivers during the lunch hour. Both events will start the on-water activities at 9 a.m. on Saturdays and will end at 4 p.m. Sundays begin at 11 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Lunch breaks each day will be between noon and 1 p.m. Come enjoy the fun, food, and action! CA Winter Asphalt Cruise to St. Augustine

hesapeake Bay Grand Banks Owners Association (CBGBOA) held its Asphalt Cruise in St. Augustine, FL, February 25-28. St. George’s Inn, a boutique hotel located on an historic pedestrian street, was our base of operation. Everyone attended a group dinner in the historic area at Columbia Restaurant.

We toured the Castillo de San Marco, which was built between 1672-1695 by the Spanish to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route. The next event on our schedule was the “Cork and Fork” culinary tour.

Our tour guide led us through the town square to Athena’s Greek Restaurant. We were served saganaki, a flaming goat cheese, paired with red wine. Roosevelt House served prosecco with a salmon and bagel platter along with shrimp and grits. At Casa de Vino 57, we did wine tastings. Bourbon and Board served us desserts with a glass of chardonnay.

On Tuesday, we experienced the Fountain of Youth, an archaeological park where we saw presentations from a blacksmith and a firearm expert. We did get a sip from the Fountain of Youth.

The group toured Flagler College, the former Hotel Ponce de Leon. A sunset cruise aboard an Adventure Boat Tour turned out to be a pontoon boat named Gator with Captain Jimmy. He was great. He did all the narration and navigation, but we told him if he felt ill, we had eight other captains onboard—so no pressure!

Everyone enjoyed our winter get together in Florida. Wednesday, we packed up to “hit the asphalt!” Safe travels back to Chesapeake Bay and hope to see everyone this spring.

Full Season of Cruising

Members of the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the Marine Trawler Owners Association (MTOA) gathered recently for lunch at Schaefer’s Canal House on the C&D Canal. After lunch we learned about the history of Schaefer’s, the canal, and the local museum. We welcomed our newest members, the Schlectics.

We have a full season of cruising planned, from the Southern Bay to the Northern Bay. Club members will take a Spring Shakedown Cruise to North Point Marina in Rock Hall, MD, on the weekend of May 1719. Rock Hall is a cute little village with lots of fun things to see, and the marina has a shuttle to the village. On Saturday, the 18th, we will have free Vessel Safety Checks, a guest speaker, dinner, and live music. Please sign up on the website link.

Next up will be the Southern Bay Cruise from May 29 to June 2. We’ll start in Solomons, MD, and head to Reedville and Urbanna, VA.

The Rally/Cruise on the York River and Beyond will take place in July. We’ll spend five nights at York River Yacht Haven, explore the area, and cruise north for three to four nights. Plans are to proceed to Urbanna. This was a very successful event last year.

In August, we’ll cruise to the beautiful Sassafras River for a fun weekend to include a crab feast. We’ll visit other great spots around the Bay in the fall.

Classic Boats and Classic Cars Run Away With This Show

Although the St. Michaels Concours d’ Elegance is well-known for the signature classic cars it displays, an event on Kent Island in early June called the annual Chesapeake Bay Motoring Festival showcases both classic cars and classic boats. Last summer well over a dozen boats were on display— on land and in water—courtesy of the Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the Antique Classic Boat Society (ACBS) plus other folks.

A few pictures from last year’s event are shown here. The craftsmanship displayed in the wood boat named Kidd was amazing. The Switzer Craft, a rare boat, was eye opening. Also impressive was the 1959 wooden Chris-Craft (shown here in the water) with the original vinyl seats in her cockpit.

The location for this summertime event is the marina and the majestic waterfront lawn of the casually elegant Kent Island Yacht Club (KIYC) on the Kent Narrows.

Aluminum and Steel Cruisers

One manufacturer of steel cruisers was the Roamer Boat Company of Holland, MI. Well, how do Roamer steel cruisers connect to the Chesapeake? The answer is simple: one of their boats won the “Best Non-Wood” award at a past Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS) Chesapeake Bay Chapter’s Classic Boat Festival that is held each year in mid-June in St. Michaels, MD. This year’s dates are Friday through Sunday, June 14, 15, and 16, as in many other past years of that major Classic Boat Show (105 classics strong).

Most people have other family commitments that Father’s Day Sunday, so they come to this huge event on Saturday. Of course, if they want to take a free cruise in a classic boat, they come on Friday, in the afternoon. All tickets are sold as a fundraiser by the museum where the show is in the water and on land over 13 acres. Tickets are good for two days.

The Roamer Boat Company was founded in 1946 and built boats in sizes from 32 feet to about 75 feet. It was sold to Chris-Craft in 1956

and became their Roamer Steel Boats Division, (later the Roamer Yachts Division). They were then built and sold under the Chris-Craft name. I show here my photo of the awardwinning 37-foot Steel Chris-Caft boat running on a slow plane after the Antique and Classic Boat Festival. Chris-Craft had several divisions over their 150 years. They even became local to the Chesapeake Bay with their plant in Salisbury, MD, dedicated exclusively to the lapstrake

boat-building process. That 339,963 square-foot building was exclusively for Sea Skiffs Chris-Craft boats. They started making plywood Kit boats in 1951-1952 that smoothly evolved into finished boats from 1970 to until about 1972. This plywood line of boats was named Cavalier. I saw a top-of-the-line model called the Golden Arrow made over two years (1963 and 1964) on display at a past St. Michaels Classic Boat Show. Chris-Craft also had a sailboat

division that was in production from 1962 to 1976. Note, one of the principals involved with Chris-Craft after the corporate ownership in 1960 liked sailboats and influenced the company into the sailboat business.

Chris-Craft started the Corsair division in 1965 and continued that division until 1977. The Corsair was an upscale design like a Century Coronado. Many of these Corsair division models were named Lancer. Another popular model name was named the Cutlass. That division also made a few models named XL. Some of the early models were as short as 10 feet. It also made a Boston Whalerlooking model from 1966 to 1969. The gull wing Corsair boats models started in 1971 to circa 1977. Chris-Craft bought some molds from a company named Lake and Sea for their first fiberglass boat model. They made these boats in the Pompano plant.

The “winter that wasn’t” has finally come to an end, and the spring commissioning rush has started at area boatshops. The Bay Bridge Boat Show, on the second full weekend in April, followed by the Annapolis Spring Sailboat Show two weeks later, marks the unofficial start of the boating season. All indications are that it should be a good one.

Jake Glover from Ferry Point Marina in Trappe, MD, sends us this update. “We just completed a ton of paint work on the Grady White. Hull and engines are now in AwlCraft. The bottom has an Interlux barrier and bottom system. Our Yamaha master tech took care of the flywheel updates and services on her F350s. Other items included a fiberglass floor repair and custom hardtop supports with rod holders. As usual, we had a heavy winter workload going into 2024. We’re expecting another great season, particularly with our new above-ground fuel system coming this spring. Get those winter work orders in now for the 2024-2025 season. Winter slots fill fast.”

Fred Probst at Phipps Boat Works in Deale, MD, brings us up to date. “This winter was as busy as ever. We have been busy with boats in here with all kinds

of projects. We’ve done a lot of marine systems and brightwork. We’ve also done some small boats. This one is the second one we’ve done. We replaced all the mahogany on it including the gunnels. We did all the brightwork and we’re getting the rig sorted out. As far as spring goes, it’s seacock season. We’re getting all the boats ready to go in the water, so we’re checking all the seacocks for leaks. I’ve got a long list of seacocks to take care of before anything goes into the water. And of course, as the weather warms up, it’s commissioning time, and we start doing the brightwork refinishing outside of the shop. We’ve got a new hire working on the boat right now; it’s his first day. We are always looking for good technicians.”

From Herrington Harbour North in Tracys Landing, MD, J.J. Williams at Osprey Marine Restorations, their new

name as part of the Annapolis Gelcoat family, sends us this update. “Our winter has been very busy. We’ve had more than our share of boats to work on; a lot of collision work, a lot of re-core work, and lots of paint jobs. We have had a lot of paint work. We’ve been busy all winter and now we are gearing up to get all our winter projects done to get ready for spring launch. We are finishing up a fuel tank replacement on a boat right now, but not so many fuel tanks this winter; more recores and hull side painting.”

Hank Reiser of Marine Services, LLC at Pocohontas Marina in Edgewater, MD, checks in with another busy winter report. “We have been extremely busy this winter. Right now, our shop is full of paneling for a 52-foot Midnight Lace. We are cleaning, repairing, and varnishing all the interior paneling and replacing

some pieces that need to be cut, sealed, and varnished. We are also doing a lot of cockpit work, window repair, and trim work on our 34-foot Chris-Craft Commander we have been restoring. It is really nearing completion, and we should be finished with that job this year. That was a long restoration. In the next five days we have a 1945 Chris-Craft Sportsman coming into the shop. It’s going to get new cockpit linoleum and varnish on the decks. We already have had a number of calls for bottom paint work, hull waxing, commissioning work, and stuff like that. We have already started to do bottom prep work today, so it seems as if we are going into the early spring season full steam ahead.”

Smokey Glover brings us up to date from the Lake Assault Boats facility in Portsmouth, VA. “This month we

have the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) Vessel J. B. Baylor in for repower. The existing John Deere engine is being replaced with a new John Deere 6090FSM85 engine and Twin Disc MG5065A marine gear. While here there will be some other maintenance and repair items taken care of, taking advantage of the time out of the water.”

Andy Dize reports in from Baltimore’s Dundalk waterfront. “The spring workload is starting to fill up at Roudebush Yacht and Engine Works in Dundalk, MD. After recently completing the integral fuel tank and non-skid replacement on a C-Hawk 18, we picked up a complete deck gelcoat repair on a Larson 32. We also have scheduled two bottom paint projects: one for a 34-foot center console and the other for a 28foot Chris-Craft. We placed a 38-foot

aluminum workboat on the hard that is scheduled for maintenance repairs and upgrades. Although we don’t have a major project booked for this year, we are starting to see an increase in smaller projects. This suits us fine for the moment, as this gives us time to continue our marina floating dock upgrade.”

Laura Shackleford from Tiffany Yachts in Burgess, VA, checks in with the following update. “We completed the winter maintenance on the Jamestown Settlement’s replica ship, the Godspeed The only thing we had to do other than the routine work was to have her propellers rebuilt. She went back in the water during the last week in March. She will be returned to Jamestown, re-rigged, and she’ll be ready for the tourist season this summer. # Hickory shad are protected in adjoining states, but there are no restrictions on their harvest in Virginia.

Species of Interest

CCA Virginia announced in February that they were filing a formal petition for rulemaking to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) this winter, requesting that the Commission consider reasonable harvest regulations for hickory shad in Virginia waters under its jurisdiction. Unlike American shad, currently there are no conservation protections in place for hickory shad in Virginia waters of the Chesapeake Bay and its coastal rivers and their tributaries and no limits on the size or number of hickory shad an angler may take from these waters. There are also no restrictions on the type of gear one can use to catch them. Hickory shad, however, are fully protected in Maryland and DC waters and there is a 10-fish daily bag limit in North Carolina (though no size limit) and selected Virginia rivers beyond the Chesapeake Bay watershed. CCA-VA finds this concerning because unrestricted catches in Virginia’s coastal rivers threaten progress made to protect and restore both shad species.

new Flounder Regs

The ASMFC handed down a 28-percent cut for the 2024 season, with multiple options given for Delaware, Maryland, the Potomac River Fisheries Commission (PRFC), and Virginia to be regulated on the whole. As of the time of this printing Delaware and Maryland had confirmed and announced compliance, with a season opened year-round and a January 1 to May 31 minimum size of 16 inches, jumping to 17.5 inches from June 1 through December 31. Throughout the season a four fish per person bag limit will be in effect. Finalization of the rules for Virginia and the PRFC hadn’t been announced as we went to press but identical regulations are expected.

He clinched the title after catching a 24-inch pickerel in Loch Raven Reservoir, capping off an impressive list of trophies including a 45-inch striper, a 14-inch yellow perch, and a 34.5-inch snakehead.

Jean-Philippe Lartigue utterly demolished the Maryland state record for rainbow trout this winter, when he caught a monstrous 32 inch, 17.44-pound rainbow trout in Antietam Creek. Topping the old record (which has stood since 1987) by more than three pounds, the catch was even more impressive since Lartigue was fishing with eight-pound test, and after a 30-minute fight, was landed without a net. Congratulations Jean-Philippe, on catching the trout of a lifetime.

Stripers in the Spotlight

As we enter May with trophy striper season eliminated in the Chesapeake Bay, two new studies have brought new light to their spawning challenges. In one performed by fisheries biologist Jim Uphoff, the survival of larval striped bass was found to be a critical factor in year-class success. The study also showed that “Even though the decline of Atlantic coast striped bass has largely been attributed to overfishing, trends in EP (egg presence) and JIs (juvenile index) indicated that recruitment failure preceded overfishing and that stock recovery was enhanced by increased survival of eggs and larvae that reflected their habitat.” In a second study performed by fisheries biologist Angela Giuliano, it was found that changing water temperatures have not resulted in an earlier start to spawning in the Bay tributaries. However, a significant change was found in the timing of the end of spawning, suggesting that the spawning season has shortened.

Ricky’s Life – Not Defined by His Disability

I became disabled in August of 1980 at Sandy Point Beach diving off one of my cousin’s shoulders. We had been diving all day and I said I was going to take one more dive and that one was my last. I almost drowned because everyone thought I was joking. I became paralyzed from the neck down for about a year. I was told by doctors that I wouldn’t be able to feed myself again, but after that year they diagnosed me as an incomplete quadriplegic because I have some use in all four limbs after staying in the hospital for about a year getting therapy. I have been in and out of therapy for years. I heard of Fish Redeemer through one of my therapists, so I booked to have fun with my family, my cousins, one friend, and a nephew. We are all baby boys of each family. My cousin who is also in a wheelchair got hurt a year after I did and is a paraplegic and his sister approximately a year after that became a quadriplegic. We may have a disability, but we have the ability to still live laugh, and have fun. The fishing trip was a great experience for all of us. We never knew that there was an organization out there like yours that assists those with disabilities and veterans. The guys (Captain Greg, Tony, Curt, and Ray) were really nice and helpful. I pray God continues to bless this organization and everyone connected. Thanks so much. We look forward to the next trip.
