FIRST WORDS E-TECH ASIA May - June 2015
Welcome to the new issue of E-Tech Asia! As you would have noticed, our cover got a facelift and it was a collective effort from the team which we hope you like as much as we do! Let us know what you think by following us on Facebook and leaving a comment with your thoughts on the new look. We’ve also made subtle changes within the layout which I will leave you to discover on your own. Our main feature this issue, I’m not going to lie, was very intimidating. I’ve seen what goes into making someone else’s idea and vision come to life using your own creativity and skill and it looks far from easy. Speaking with experts in the field showed me that, even though I was right to be intimidated, projection mapping is a skill that we would all do well to learn. While it is definitely not a simple task, it is becoming a musthave at high-profile events all over Asia. From EDM concerts to art installations, every surface is becoming another projection platform. So if you’re unsure where to start, or if you wanna spruce up your arsenal, check out our second feature of the top brands in projection mapping technology and let them guide you. The main exhibition season is almost over, or it already is, depending on where your interests lie. With all the Prolight’s happening so close, did you manage to catch one? If not, don’t worry, we brought back the cream of the crop with us in our 19-page review of PL+S Frankfurt. A trend that could not be ignored was the combining of different moving heads into 1 fixture at this year’s Frankfurt show. Well, considering that less fixtures for more light is always a welcome sight on any technical rider or BQ list, it’s nice to see that manufacturers are really listening to what the industry wants and trying to make jobs easier without compromising on quality.

Danley Sound Appoints Master Distributors For S.E.A & Australia REGIONAL: In order to support the growing international demand for Tom Danley’s innovative loudspeaker and subwoofer solutions to age-old sound reinforcement challenges, Danley Sound Labs has appointed two master distributors for the region: Danley Asia, headed by Nicholas Loe in Singapore, and Danley Australia, headed by Steve Anderson in New South Wales. The master distributors provide Danley with the needed infrastructure to speed delivery, service, and support to all of its international customers. “In order to better serve our customers outside of the Americas, we have set up full sales, service, and support centers
in the form of master distributors,” explained Jonathan “JP” Parker, Danley’s director of sales. “While customers can always contact us directly here in the States, the master distributors will be able to respond more nimbly to their requests.” The master distributors’ locations are ideal. “Singapore is the perfect hub for supporting our dealer and distributor network in Southeast Asia,” said Loe. “Our network of distributors and their customers appreciate having easy access to us as a resource!” One of the primary jobs of the master distributors is to give potential
customers the opportunity to actually hear the Danley difference for themselves by way of demos. Audio professionals around the world are encouraged to contact Danley or a Danley master distributor for a demo. Danley Australia recently completed a five-city tour (Perth, Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane) that introduced the Danley line to contractors, consultants, and end-users. “We were very satisfied with the results of the tour,” said Anderson. “It has already stimulated projects and interest from dealers and consultants.” www.danleysoundlabs.com

ETC Conducts Regional Training Tour “The training was very helpful regarding console operation, especially for a user like me in theatre lighting,” said Boon Ann Goh, a Professor from the Taipei National University of the Arts School of Dance. “I found that the Eos Ti console is very user-friendly for lighting designers who work in the theatre. All the control buttons, trimming effects, Magic Sheets and softkeys are easy to learn and understand.”
Training conducted in Hong Kong
ASIA: In February, ETC conducted a regional training tour on the Eos Ti lighting control console for users and clients in Seoul and Hong Kong. Led by ETC trainer Matthias Strobel, and in collaboration with ETC’s authorized dealer C&C Lightway and ETC Asia, the training familiarized new users with the Eos console family’s programming and philosophy, and provided experienced programmers with additional training on advanced features. The Seoul training held by C&C included two sessions, a five-day seminar for their client, TKLS, an influential rental company in Korea that provides equipment for many theatrical shows and other events; and a two-day seminar for the Technical Service department staff of C&C. The TKLS event had 10 participants who were new to the Eos Ti console but experienced programmers on other manufacturers’ products. Strobel began the training with an introduction to the console’s hardware layout and its basic command-line syntax, and then moved on to sophisticated control features, such as show control, multiple cue lists, and all kind of effects. While the schedule at C&C mainly focused on recently added software features like the new workspace
tools and some advanced features, such as the virtual media server for pixelmapping and the console set-up menu. “The purpose of the Eos Ti training was to educate operators at TKLS,” said Hwan-Soo Chung, General Manager of C&C Lightway. “The result was very positive. They were impressed with the console and how it compares with those of other manufacturers.” In Hong Kong, Strobel offered a two-day session to two groups of experienced users from the surrounding area and Taiwan, enhancing their skills and explaining features like Magic Sheets and advanced capabilities in blind. Ten participants attended the training each day, including dealers, rental companies, lighting designers, console programmers, and a university professor.
Jit Lam from 3200K Productions, a rental company in Hong Kong, mentioned that the training covered how a newgeneration console could help his designs and programming, thanks to “not only its programming speed, but its philosophy,” explained Lam. “Being an expert on other consoles, I never thought I could easily control the tracking or selective record of anything. All these functions in Eos Ti are super awesome and helpful, letting the designer easily plot or design their lighting cues for the show.” Strobel explained that he always tries to keep his trainings related to real-world examples from his own experience working as a programmer for different lighting designers. He believes that this helps the trainees remember why and how a feature might be used. “For all of the trainings, we connected computers to the consoles running Capture visualization, so the trainees had a nice lighting rig to work and practice with,” described Strobel. www.etcconnect.com

HK Audio Extends Variable Curvature Options For CTA 208s INTERNATIONAL: CTA 208s ordered from the beginning of 2015 onwards will feature curvature options of 0°, 3° 6° and 9°, giving far more flexibility to the end user. Previous CTA 208s feature only 0° and 9° options. The special new rigging system facilitates deployment in both long-throw and near-field applications: when users opt for the 0° setting, the individual mid/high units are not articulated; instead they form a stable and remarkably coherent wave. This maximizes frequency bundling effects, thereby maximizing range. The improved rigging system, which allows the tops to also be tilted at 9°, 6° and 3° angles, enables ConTour Array to
deliver optimum sound dispersion over the entire audience area, whatever the size of the venue. An updated version of the EASE Focus 2 GLL files, a revised product manual and a rear view image of the new CTA 208s are available from the HK Audio website as free downloads. For customers who wish to upgrade their existing CTA 208s to the new specifications, an affordable “CTA 208 0°, 3°, 6°, 9° Upgrade Kit” is available now. The kit includes the two additional metal brackets required for the upgrade and a sticker with a graphic showing the two new angles. An upgrade kit is
required for each CTA 208 unit, but the conversion is simple and straightforward to make. www.hkaudio.com

The culmination of a 10-year R&D effort, Sennheiser's Digital 9000 is an alldigital wireless system that can transmit completely uncompressed audio, artifact-free and with superb dynamics. Designed for broadcasting professionals,
musical theatres and high-profile live audio events, the Digital 9000 sets a new benchmark in digital wireless transmission. The system has been meticulously designed for the highest channel counts and operation in dense frequency environments. Infrared (IR) synchronization between receivers and transmitters greatly aids setting up of the system. Commenting on the performance of the Digital 9000, Al Woods said, “Its not always easy with such high SPL band levels both on-stage monitoring and out front PA levels. For Drake the sonic quality of the vocals were absolutely full range. With PA, one normally puts up with the inputs that are available, not knowing the weak link, mix engineer, PA set up and the signal path . On this occasion it was easy to realise how transparent it can be with a full range, digital vocal reproduction. A testament to the capsule rejection and the true reproduction of the 9000 series.” www.sennheiser.com

Pacific Lighting Delighted With Unexpected Orders For Robert Juliat Solutions The 1000W RJ Lutin is a compact, 3-in1 fixture with a host of unique features that include a choice of 3 quickchange lenses that can transform it easily from a Fresnel, to a Pebble- or PC-lens lantern.

CHINA: “We have received several orders for Robert Juliat products over the past weeks, most of which have been totally unexpected,” said Pacific Lighting (HK) Ltd Director, Hugh Chinnick, linking this amiably to the good omen of the beginning of the “Year of the Goat”.
Taiden HCS-8000 Series
The Tai Po Civic Centre, managed by the Leisure & Cultural Service Department of the Government of Hong Kong, has recently added 30 x Robert Juliat Lutin Fresnels to their inventory. “Their requirements for the new fixtures were that they should deliver a good light output, be light weight, and have an absence of engineered plastic components,” explained Chinnick. “The Department reported they had experienced degradation of plastic parts on a number of Fresnels in their existing inventory, so a fixture without this material was preferred. The venue flying system also has a rather low weight limit, so the compact RJ Lutin fitted the bill well.”
Two orders from Hong Kong International Theme Parks Ltd, both for a pair of RJ Manon 1200W MSD followspots, also came as a complete surprise. “The Park maintains an impressive inventory of lighting equipment for events, and adds to it when necessary,” commented Chinnick. “One pair of the Manons is destined for the new event marquee, and the other pair with RJ custom flight cases is for the general pool.” HKITP already has three of the mighty Robert Juliat Lancelot 4000W HTI followspots for their long throw applications. TABOO, the playful cabaret experience at the City of Dreams in Macau, is preparing for its new season which necessitated the addition of another RJ Victor 1800W MSR followspot to their existing inventory. “This was another surprise that came out of the blue,” commented Chinnick. “The Victor was air-freighted as the venue needed it by the beginning of April. Luckily, Robert Juliat’s precise production schedule meant that one could be built and shipped in time for the rehearsals of the new show.” “We are very happy with such fantastic demand for Robert Juliat fixtures since Chinese New Year and, with plenty more in the pipeline, we are very optimistic for the rest of the year!” www.robertjuliat.com www.pacificlighting.net

CMA Treated With Primacoustic Solutions
Chrishan Pieris and Llyod Miranda heap praises on the Primacoustics sound absorption solutions
UAE: Melody House, sole distributor of Primacoustic in the Middle East, has recently supplied the Centre for Musical Arts (CMA) with a complete acoustic solution providing the school with four London 12 room kits and thirty 2-inch broadband panels. The London 12 room kit is designed for rooms that measure between 100 to 200 square-feet, the London 12 employs a variant of the popular live-end, dead-end LEDE concept whereby the source end of the room is fitted with increased absorption while the receiving end of the room is left more lively to retain a sense of air and space.

CMA is a non-profit organization with a vision to develop and enhance the existing musical community initially in Dubai, but more importantly to make the musical experience available to the wider audience through its teaching programs, concerts, recitals and workshops. CMA is one of only 7 recognised examination centres in the UAE by the Associated Board for the Royal Schools of Music. Since the beginning of their retail business in 1993, Melody House has gradually grown into an experienced
Musical Instrument Company. Today the company has established itself as a distributor and reseller of the most reputable brands in the music industry. Based in Dubai, the company spans its operations across the Middle East. "The acoustic panels in my room have to deal with two drum kits and numerous guitars being played simultaneously. They still manage to absorb sound and manage all the acoustics in the room amazingly and to great effect,” said drum and guitar specialist Chrishan Peiris. “Their appearance has appealed to the students with many wanting them for their own rooms.” Lloyd Miranda, another drum and guitar specialist added, “I used to wear earplugs to protect my ears from being damaged as I teach drums. Having the acoustic panels in my room helps a lot in protecting our ears as it absorbs a good amount of excess frequencies, but not to the extent that it will make the sound too dry. My students now have more freedom in expressing themselves in the music they play.” www.melodyhousemi.com

Lighthouse Continues Robe Investment good as a Wash and a Beam fixture, it meant that we only had to rig half the amount of lights to get an exponential increase in effects and dynamics! The light weight also makes the MMX WashBeams extremely quick to rig.”
Lighthouse team
DUBAI: Multi-award winning company, Lighthouse is one of the most successful and prolific lighting and production design practices in Dubai. Headed by the charismatic Terry Miranda and his brother Steve, Lighthouse is continuously busy throughout the thriving events season in the UAE, and also works in other parts of the Middle East. The Mirandas founded the company 10 years ago in 2003, initially with Terry as an LD and since then, have evolved into a complete turnkey design and production house with a reputation for imagination and flair. Lighthouse invested in Robe products immediately after they set-up, and have stayed with the brand. They now have over 250 x Robe units of various types which are used almost exclusively to facilitate their own shows. The kit ranges from the CycFX 8s, MMX WashBeams, ROBIN Beam 300s and PARfects – to older products like the ColorMix 240, ColorSpot and ColorWash 575 and 1200E ATs and 2500 ATs. The vintage products, even those seeing their first decade of active service, are all still going strong. The appeal of MMX WashBeams is their multi-functionality, together with the light weight, explained Terry. “We are constantly up against time restraints when on site. When Robe produced this fixture that is equally
He added, “The colour and the gobos are great and they are generally really diverse lights which are perfect for the shows we are designing and producing”. “Going with one manufacturer that can offer all the functionality and quality you require, and understanding what those lights are capable of doing are key to the way we work. It also means that our crew and technicians learn how they are constructed and get familiar with new units much quicker because they know Robe’s build techniques,” explained Terry. “Our purchasing decisions come from a design and creative perspective rather than being price driven”. He added that they have a great relationship with Elie Battah, General Manager of Robe Middle East. “We look for a level of perfection in Robe and they deliver this time and time again”. Over an average year, Lighthouse lights and designs 25 to 30 shows and events, concentrating mainly on larger ones, which is an intense schedule. Terry confirms that in all that time none of their Robes have ever gone down on a show – not one single one of them! Terry recently visited the Robe factory and has seen the newest showroom demos in Valmez, and is now seriously looking at adding Pointes and more MMXs to Lighthouse choice of available creative tools. www.robe.cz

VOX Choose DPA Microphones For Live Performances SINGAPORE: VOX is rapidly establishing itself as one of the premier live bands from the island of Singapore. Founded by four classically-trained musicians, the group’s bold reinterpretations of rock classics from artists as diverse as Muse, The Rolling Stones and Adele have turned heads and earn them wild reviews at some major Singaporean events, including the Singapore Grand Prix, the Youth Olympic Games and the Singapore Yacht Show. Recently it has been experimenting with mash-ups, fusing classical and rock pieces together such as on the piece ‘Smoke Symphony’ that couples Deep Purple’s ‘Smoke on the Water’ together with Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. And concerts last year covered the entire gamut of musical styles from Electronica to Grunge Rock, Urban Funk to Hip Hop, all, according to the band, ‘sprinkled with a good amount of 90s cheese and power girl bands’. Finding the right mics to capture all that has been a difficult journey, but with DPA the band think that they have finally got to the destination they desire. "When we first got started, VOX was pretty much at the mercy of the
sound equipment that was used by the equipment hire company chosen by our clients. Instead of giving us wireless instrument microphones they would give us lapel mics that were more suitable for speech. Obviously, these were not suited to picking up the sound of our strings," commented cellist Tow Huiwen. "This caused our sound to be metallic and sharp and was not what we were looking for at all." Then, by chance, one of the venue's they were performing at fitted the band with DPA d:vote 4099 Instrument Microphones. "The ease of fitting the microphones to our instruments and the pick up was fantastic," said violinist Justine Loh. "We could finally hear the warmth and the natural acoustic of our instruments. After that gig, DPA was always at the top of our minds. We have had the opportunity afterwards to be fitted with many other instrument mics, but the DPA d:vote 4099 stands out from the rest." Violinist Lester Kong added that a mic has to do several things for VOX. "As our instruments are acoustic, a mic has to make us sound natural and not metallic and hard," he continued. “It has
to provide enough room for the strings and the instrument to vibrate freely. It needs to be easy to fit but we also need to ensure that the way the microphone is fitted does not cause any damage to our instrument, such as scratching the varnish. And lastly it must not get in our way during a performance." VOX was supplied with its DPA microphones by the company's Singaporean distributor Uni-DK. The close collaboration between VOX and DPA is win-win situation for both sides: VOX is now using mics that best reflect the acoustic qualities of their instruments, while DPA benefits because this group of incredibly talented musicians is highlighting the capabilities of the d:fine 4099s in a demanding live setting. "We are truly delighted to be using DPA," said violinist Melissa Liew. "This means that whatever musical direction we move in we can have the utmost confidence that the sound heard by the audience is exactly the one that we want to deliver." www.dpamicrophones.com

Epson Retains World's Number One Projector Brand Status INTERNATIONAL: On the 40th anniversary of the brand's creation, Epson, the world leader in projectors, has once again been named the world's number one projector brand. This is the 14th year in a row that Epson has received this accolade. This is according to the latest results for 2014 released by projector market research firm, Futuresource Consulting.
YOU´ VE GOT THE SKILLS. SKILLS WE´ VE GOT THE TOOLS.
Over the past 14 years, Epson has shown consistent steady growth in market share, year-on-year, increasing to 29.4% market share in 2014, over 28.1% in 2013. This means that almost one in three projectors purchased in 2014 was an Epson projector. “2015 is a very special year for us. Not only are we celebrating our 40th anniversary as a brand, but we are also celebrating our achievement in the projector market,” said Koichi Endo,
Managing Director of Epson Southeast Asia. “We have successfully made projectors more collaborative and interactive. It is no longer simply about projecting, but more about engaging with your audience. There is so much more you can do with projectors and we want to ensure that our projectors exceed our customer's expectations.” The strength of Epson's projectors lies in the revolutionary 3LCD technology. First introduced in 1989, Epson's 3LCD technology creates astoundingly beautiful images in bright, natural colour without dither noise or colour breakup. 3LCD projectors are also gentler on the eyes and offer smoother video playback as they utilize three separate liquid crystal panels to form a continuous image containing all colours. www.epson.com.sg

rolight + Sound Guangzhou continues to receive strong support from the pro audio and lighting industry with its 2015 show returning with a bigger space and bigger audience. This year's show was the biggest ever with 1,186 exhibitors flashing out their latest technologies across 12 halls totalling 130,000 sqm at Areas A & B, China Import and Export Fair Complex. John Paice, Marketing / Artist Relations of CELESTION explained the perks of joining the show, “This is the place to further develop our presence in China, and build connections with domestic Chinese brands and manufacturers, as well as being able to visit many potential customers in one place.” Jason Zeng, Sales Director of renowned German brand beyerdynamic shared, “beyerdynamic is a top audio brand with 90 years history and we have been supporting the Prolight + Sound shows for a long time because of their industry influence. Having good response from the last edition, we decided to showcase our full product range including the TG wired and wireless microphones, professional surveillance headphones and headsets, Quinta wireless

and the business potential of Southern China.”
Spanish brand Beyma, a first time exhibitor of the show, was also present in the hope of raising their business profile in Asia. Lily Xiao, General Manager for Beyma China explained, “Chinese audio system manufacturers are becoming more advanced in audio product technology, leading to an increased demand for this technology to be used in European made speakers and compression drivers. A show like Prolight + Sound Guangzhou is a great opportunity for us to let our customers in Asia, especially in China, to learn more about our latest products.”
Buzzing At The Show Floor
This year, the Audio Brand Name Halls returned and expanded to four halls. Returning exhibitor AV Media, who was on site to showcase its range of products from KV2 Audio, Peavey, MEDIAMATRIX and its in-house lines for entertainment, performance and conference use, enthused, “The market has certainly a higher requirement for audio products. They have to be professional, comprehensive and user-friendly. Joining the Audio Brand Name Halls gives us good exposure to the Chinese market
Gathering a lot of hype at the Guangzhou Charming Lighting Co. Over at the HARMAN booth, the team kept it simple with its customary DJ Music Show featuring the Martin RUSH. Also on display were the JBL line of products, as well as the Martin MAC Quantum Profile, Wash and M6 console. In similar fashion, MIPRO decked out its range of solutions including the brand new wireless plug-on transmitter TA-80, the compact wireless receiver ACT-80 and the newly developed MES-100 bridge server, within a massive networking lounge stationed in plain sight. The MIPRO ACT-80 is a compact wireless receiver designed for professional camcorder applications. Matched with MIPRO ACT transmitters to achieve natural sound reproduction, the receiver eliminates the need for microphone cables during recording, ensuring safe and agile operation of camcorders. The ACT-80 is the ideal portable receiver, convenient for use in any wireless audio transmission system. Eastern Acoustic Development, who carries brands Xilica Audio, Ashly and Alcons, had again occupied a prime position in the audio hall, which drew several curious eyes with its elaborate showroom. The Alcons RR12, in particular, was on demo. The system features the purpose-designed Alcons-proprietary RBN602rsr 6" pro-ribbon driver and a custom-designed 12" woofer with 4" voice coil, dual-spider suspension with forced-venting; while both transducers have Neodymium motor structures, the RR12 has a very high performance-toweight ratio. Due to the pro-ribbon's all-natural cylindrical wavefront, no (distortion-increasing) adapters are needed to obtain perfect coupling for super precise directivity up to even the highest frequencies (to beyond 20kHz.). A step forward on the digital amplification era is SAE Audio, who donned its best suit at the show with its range of audio solutions including the TX series and improved versions of its PCM, PQM series.
The TX series power amplifiers are a very versatile and efficient yet affordable option for those requiring an all-purpose device. Implementing Power Factor Correction technology along with Universal Mains Regulated SMPS power supply and Class D power modules, the TX series combines in the same amplifier all the functional requirements found on most sound reinforcement applications. Verity Audio also showcased its latest two-way dual 8 compact line array modules IWAC208 and IWAC210, which are ideal for small to medium installations, along with its range of column

Adamson Keeps It Clean With S-Series S10 The S10 loudspeaker is part of the new S-Series by Adamson. It is a 2-way, full range, sub-compact line array is loaded with two newly designed 10” ND10LM Kevlar Neodymium LF drivers and an NH4TA2 1.5” exit HF compression driver mounted to a wave shaping sound chamber which produces a slightly curved wavefront with a nominal dispersion pattern of 110° x 10° (H x V). The overall sonic characteristic of the S10 enclosure is clean due to Adamson’s patent-pending Controlled Summation Technology– a design method that brings the LF drivers as close together as possible, while symmetrically outwardly splaying them. The end result increases usable frequency range while decreasing summation at the crossover point, reducing interference. The LF drivers are also recessed behind the exit of the HF
sound chamber, so as to not limit the size and shape. A small amount of delay aligns the lows to the high frequency energy, with some dynamic overlap control in place as well to diminish any remaining noticeable interference.
The full S-Series consists of the S10 line array enclosure, S119 subwoofer, Blueprint AV and the E-rack; Adamson’s new unified rack solution. www.adamsonsystems.com

CADAC Releases Gesture-Operated Audio Console On the first day of the show, the CADAC team unveiled the CDC six gestureoperation sound production console which it claims features the fastest and most intuitive user interface of any audio mixing console available. Based around further development of CADAC’s advanced, highly acclaimed gesture-operation user interface, the CDC six replaces traditional fixed physical controls with an intuitive “high agility” user interface, accessed via a widescreen 23.5'' touchscreen. The optically bonded 23.5'' 16:9 high definition LCD touch screen with digital encoders to the bottom and the right is the most advanced and visually
striking feature of the new console. A unique combination of touch screen and traditional encoders, for additional control of console features, naturally leads to an instinctive use of “touch and swipe”. The faders follow the swipe of
the screen or scrolling of the channels, ensuring full control at all time of any combination of inputs, outputs or VCAs displayed on the screen. www.cadac-sound.com

Clay Paky Adds New ‘Superhero’ To The PROJECTORS SCENIUS is the new moving head spotlight at the top of the Clay Paky range. Its advanced optical unit and the new 1400W OSRAM discharge lamp provide a much higher light output than with previous generation 1500W lamps. Thanks to its wide 8°-55° zoom, Scenius can be used in almost every scenario. A modern focus tracking system concentrates maximum luminous efficiency precisely on the effect you wish to project, and the focus may be set to be fully automatic. The lamp produces a 6000K colour temperature that does not
vary over time; also, Scenius can count on a CRI>90, which is extremely unusual for a metal halide light source. The colours cover a broad spectrum, even including pastel shades, thanks to a CMY system, a 7-colour wheel and a linear CTO filter. The fixture can also be used in wash mode by inserting a new design of frost filter. It can be run at 1400W or in energy saving mode at 1200W.

This allows large, multi-projector shows to be delivered with fewer machines and no downstream splitter devices. This drastically reduces cost, rack space, set-up time and complexity; all without adding any signal latency. Users can also swap to DisplayPort 1.2 to drive up to four 4K outputs per server.
VFC output cards are an industry first: no other media server on the market offers the ability to gracefully transition from HD to 4K as 4K proliferates. As new signal standards gain popularity, d3 Technologies will release new output cards to handle them. The d3 4x4pro can Push Every Pixel playing up to eight layers of 4K video, 32 layers of HD video (DVX/HAP codecs at 30fps) and up to eight layers of uncompressed HD video (Animation codec at 30fps), all with content up to 16K pixels across. Two 10Gb/s Ethernet
ports allow huge quantities of content to be transferred in just minutes – a real plus for high-pressure show environments.. www.d3technologies.com

d&b ArrayCalc Version 8 Offers Further Sophistication The d&b ArrayCalc simulation software is the simulation tool for d&b line arrays, column and point source loudspeakers as well as subwoofers. This is a comprehensive toolbox for all tasks associated with acoustic design, performance prediction, alignment, rigging and safety parameters. ArrayCalc is available as a native stand-alone application for both Microsoft Windows (Win7 or higher) and Mac OS X (10.6 or higher) operating systems. This can significantly reduce setup and tuning time in mobile applications and allows for precise initial simulations when planning installations. Listening planes can be defined in the venue tab, creating
a three dimensional representation of any audience area in a given venue. The optional ArrayProcessing function within the ArrayCalc simulation software V8 incorporates powerful filter algorithms that calculate and optimize the sonic performance of a d&b line array over an entire listening area. ArrayProcessing ensures that every member of the audience benefits from the same remarkable quality of sound by enhancing the spectral consistency, with a defined level distribution, to achieve a consistent tonal balance for each listener. The optimization intensifies the clarity and tonal balance of the J-Series,
V-Series or Y-Series line array solutions; taking existing d&b systems to dizzying heights. ArrayProcessing also applies a target frequency response to different loudspeaker columns, giving each array the same sonic character and coherence, regardless of Series, column length and splay settings. All of this is achieved with a software update, available to download from the d&b website. www.dbaudio.com
D.A.S. Audio Comes Out In Sound Force
Designed for today's high-level dance venues where exceptional sound, imposing power and impressive looks are key requisites, the new series presently offers four models.
The SF-112 is a powerful mid-high 3-way cabinet which allows for passive or bi-amp operation. The midrange is handled by the new D.A.S. 12HQ loudspeaker. High frequency reproduction is trusted to the D.A.S. M-75N neodymium compression driver used by D.A.S. on a number of their high-profile systems. Both components are mounted to fiberglass horns with a quality "polished" finish. The ultra-high frequencies are handled by twin "bullet" type tweeters mounted on supports. The SF-215 is a bass system comprising two DAS 15" loudspeakers in a fourth
order bass-reflex configuration. The bass cabinets can either be stacked, or flown on both sides of the SF-112 to form a 4-way array. Two subwoofer options are available in the Sound Force series. The SF-221, a double 21" subwoofer comprising twin 21LXN4 loudspeakers in "V" loaded configuration and the impressive SF-30A, a powered ultra-low system. DiGiCo Unveils S21 Console One of the most entertaining introductions by far, DiGiCo's Managing Director James Gordon took guests through a video presentation complete with Back To The Future movie references to unveil the new S21 console. The core of S21 is DiGiCo’s Stealth Digital Processing. With the same FPGA algorithms as the SD7 and the Mic Pre design lifted from the 192kHz SD-Rack, “the audio statistics on this console are very much high end; it should surprise a lot of new to DiGiCo engineers. Oh, and its 96kHz with no processing limitations
from day one like all the other DiGiCo consoles,” said James. S21 comes with dual DMI (DiGiCo MultiChannel Interface) option card slots, useful for expanding with industry formats (analogue, MADI, Dante, etc.). The compact dual screen design provides 10 channels strips per screen allowing for instant operator feedback and control on 20 channels, at the same time. The instant feedback offers reassurance when mixing large shows but the newly designed drag, swipe, and drop channel layout system makes it simple
for operators to move channels and busses across the surface to design your own custom fader layouts. www.digico.biz

HK Audio Expands Linear 5 Range Delighting visitors of the show, HK Audio added 2 new systems to their impressive Linear 5 range. The LTS A long-throw satellite pairs the concept of an integrated line array with the physical format of a classic compact point source. Either flown or deployed in ground stacks, LTS A’s special audio characteristics let you set up acoustically correct head stacks and horizontal clusters. The heart of the LTS A is the Multicell Transformer which offers three key benefits. Small apertures transform waves to boost SPL so that a miniature horn is able to deliver SPL gains much like those of big horns. Next, multi-cellular design eliminates distortion in the audible range up to 20 kHz, a common drawback of horns and nine horn cells’ varying lengths and surface areas of their exit apertures are configured so as to shape a + 5°/-30 ° curved wavefront similar to that of a full multi-component array. Equipped with DSP-controlled active electronics, the Linear 5 LTS A may be paired with the new L SUB 4000 A subwoofer that can serve as a sub-low add-on to the SUB L 2000 A and can be paired with all Linear fullrange and satellite speakers. www.hkaudio.com

Lab.gruppen Previews Lake Controller V6.4 The new Lake Controller v6.4 software program, scheduled for release later this spring, introduces a number of significant features to enable faster and more accurate optimization of complex, large-scale sound reinforcement systems. Currently in a beta version, v6.4 adds a new dimension to preset and EQ handling with the introduction of Recallable EQ Overlays. According to Product Manager Martin Andersson, “With this new feature, users can store and recall individual EQ overlays to modules and groups in Lake Controller.”
“Now any given speaker preset can consist of a single base preset which then can be augmented with EQ overlay additions. This allows fast modification of a preset to compensate for the number of boxes in an array or for variations in system throw distance.” Additionally, when an EQ Overlay is either stored or recalled to a Module or Group, the store/recall path also is stored in the actual Overlay for the module. This feature allows users to easily switch between different EQ Overlays with the same type of compensation. A speaker manufacturer
or rental company can pre-define these paths for distribution inside the Lake LoadLibrary. labgruppen.com

“This year, the major focus and the real emphasis will be on producing quality seminars and workshops that will be centred around discussions concerning lucrative opportunities of investing into the business. With this initiative introduced, we see some serious organisations and entrepreneurs join the bandwagon. Another important aspect that will be touched upon is the knowledge factor. A series of seminars are being planned to disseminate basic and crucial information on sound and light technology to a market segment that is, day in and day out, utilizing and hiring state-of-the-art AV technology for various events. This effort will bring about a change on how technology can be used and how different situations can be handled using the resources and gears available,” said Manuel Dias, Convenor of the INDIAN DJ Expo.
The INDIAN DJ Expo platform has had a successful run so far. With a genuine visitor footfall of 5530 in 2014, exhibitors have committed their participation with the firm belief that the platform is here to cater to their expectations. SPECIAL FEATURE E-TECH ASIA May - June 2015
A
s many of us know, the art of turning common objects into interactive displays is widely used now in advertising, concerts, theatre and just about anywhere with a surface. Originally known as ‘Spacial Augmented Reality’ or ‘Video Mapping’, today it is simply known as Projection Mapping.
Over in Australia, High Country Legends, a multi-million dollar production uses projection as a main component of the show. Big name brands such as coolux, Clay Paky, Barco and Martin Pro come together to create an immersive experience for guests as they travel through inspiring stories of Australian legends.
According to community resource, Projection Mapping Central, the first instance of projection onto a non-flat surface dates back to the opening of the Haunted Mansion ride in Disneyland, 1969. The ride featured a number of interesting optical illusions, including a disembodied head and 5 busts singing the theme song of the ride. These were accomplished by filming head-shots of the singers (with 16 mm film) and then projecting this film onto busts of their faces.1
These are just some of the examples on how Asia is jumping on the bandwagon of projection, and in no small scale. But where is it going and what do we need to get it there? Elissa Nadine spoke to experts in the field on what can be expected from this burgeoning artform, and here’s what she found out:
Since then, the expectations of clients and the creativity of content creators has grown leaps and bounds. At the end of 2014, one of the largest mapping events in the history of Japan took place using the famous Kanazawa castle in Ishikawa Prefecture as a projection background. Content combined with sound and light created an enchanting digital art fantasy that took countless hours and a three month preparation phase.

PROJECTION MAPPING IS GROWING IN ASIA
80% of respondents agreed that projection mapping is growing globally but a third said that content creators need to become more familiar with the technology before they can use it to their full potential.
As producers and show designers become more familiar with the technology and work flow we are seeing an increase of projection mapping and tracking influencing shows. From light festivals to architectural building projection, high end corporate events to exhibitions to award shows we see a lot of clients now embracing this sort of technology. - Olin Winton, Technical Manager at TDC - Technical Direction Company
FACTORS THAT FUEL GROWTH
Projection mapping creates many opportunities to turn any piece of architecture, set piece, or object into a canvas which can be "painted" with light. David Bajt, Director Of Video Consulting Studio, BAJT explained “I've been working on mappings on everything from huge buildings, rotating cars, flying cubes, opera sets to 1.5 egg-shapes and human models, and the list goes on. Because you can dynamically create and transform these shapes using projection it opens up huge possibilities regardless if the aim with the projection is for a product launch, a theatre set, or design installation. Being able to transform an object from one state to another can only really be done with projection mapping.
An exciting advancement in show technologies over the last few years has given both designers and engineers a new pallet of tools for conceptualizing and delivering projection mapping. Projectors have been getting brighter, lighter and more power efficient while media servers have streamlined the pre-visualisation and delivery of media. Both make delivering complex projects much easier and more accessible than it has ever been. - Richard Porter, Owner Of Creative Technology Consultancy, The Hive
The design process is becoming more familiar to producers, designers, content creators and technical teams. This has helped reduce some of the costs that may have made it prohibitive before. The audience attention spans are short, new methods of grabbing and holding their attention are needed to keep them interested while the story is being told, projection mapping helps keep the interest and breaks out of the more traditional methods. - Olin Winton, TDC
CONTENT VS TECHNOLOGY
To ensure dynamic projection mapping, Olin Winton of TDC in Australia shared that “having the creative team understand the limitations and benefits of a surface are a must.” However, the benefits provided by the right technology should not be ignored. “Regardless if you're a traditional "projectionist" or a modern software-oriented person like me there's always a need to truly understand how projectors work and how video signals flow from the source to the projector itself,” said David Bajt. “I work with software technologies which allows you to create a virtual 3D replica of the show you're working on. Using tools such as 3D AutCad, 3dsMax, Cinema4d, the Adobe Suite and d3 the entire show can be pre-simulated and pre-programmed months ahead of the actual show event. On-site the same 3D system will allow for very accurate mapping quality and the calibration and blending of the projectors will also be executed very quickly. But again, a show relies heavily on the people understanding the video hardware. For the shows I do, most of the content is produced using a combination of Cinema4D, After Effects, Flame, Nuke, Photoshop - the list goes on...Hardware-wise there's probably quite a few d3 servers involved, a big Lightware matrix, Barco/Christie/Panasonic projectors and lots and lots of other boxes that all have their function in the pipeline.
Formed over 30 years ago, TDC – Technical Direction Company is a wholly owned Australian company. Today they are at the forefront of the market as specialists in video equipment solutions. Their impressive resume includes the 2014 ARIA Awards, Sydney Festival 2014 and White Night Melbourne.

a huge role in the quality of the final result. Typically I build my models in Cinema 4d, then use the d3 Media Server to simulate the show. The more you can do in advance the better and d3 allows you to foresee potential issues and make design decisions early.
Where the requirement for projection capabilities are seen the most, 80% say that semi-permanent installations (such as shows in Las Vegas) are the jobs to focus on. Though to seems to be an increase in live events and retail.
Obviously the video content is the absolute focus of any projection project and working with a talented studio is as crucial to getting the desired results. When it comes to delivering the project onsite working with skilled technicians, especially a good projectionist can make all the difference.”
80% : Semi-Permanent Install 10% : Live 10% : Others (retail, guerilla advertising, artistic expression)
New projection technologies allow technicians to re-map projectors very quickly in case a projector has lost its alignment. I’d say that that is the biggest problem with a permanent projection mapping and that’s why you don’t see so many of them on a large scale or on a more complex canvas, but I think we will see more and more fixed installations in the future. - David Bajt, BAJT

According to Richard Porter, there are three stages to every projection project, all as important as each other. Project Set-up, Content Creation and On-site Delivery. “The foundation of every projection project occurs in the initial setup. Making an accurate model of your projection object, calculating projector locations and lensing and delivering a precise content template to your studio all play
IMPROVEMENTS FOR TECHNOLOGY
David Bajt feels that hardware manufacturers should “reduce the amount of features in their projectors!” A loyal user of d3 Technologies, he cites their d3 platform as an example. “Working with a very sophisticated tool such as d3 there is no need to have a warp card installed on the projectors, the alignment will be 100% done in the software. If I would put something on my wish list I'd just add even more brightness to the projectors!” In regards to the media servers, David adds, “I now work a lot with projection onto moving objects while keeping a perfect tracked projection. The new tracking technologies, such as Blacktrax, excite me and I'm hoping that the media servers workflow working with these extremely complicated shows will get even more streamlined.

WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD? I don’t ever see video mapping going away, it can be a big ballsy statement or it can be used more discreetly adding finesse to a lighting look that can not be currently achieved through standard lighting/ LED fixtures. - Olin Winton, TDC I think it's going to continue to grow for a long time moving forwards. Software and hardware manufaturers constantly come out with new exciting products for projection mapping that makes it cheaper and easier to use. The phrase “Projection Mapping” has become a bit of a buzz word with agencies in the last few years, which in so many ways has helped increase its popularity and prevalence in live events. However I’ve been working on projection projects for around 10 years already and I can’t see any signs of decline. I’ve every confidence that in the next 10 years we will be seeing even more exciting art created using projection. - Richard Porter, The Hive

SONY “Apart from the obvious challenges of mapping projections onto buildings or structures, another major constraint would be the positioning and alignment of the projectors involved. Set-up sites typically have varying ground conditions, space limitations or placement orientations. Sony’s laser projectors, like the VPL-FHZ55 and VPL-FHZ700L, help to overcome these challenges with flexibility of installation. Due to a tilt-angle-free design, Sony’s laser projector can be installed at any angle – even on its side or upside down. Other convenient features include built-in edge blending to seamlessly create super-sized displays, geometric correction, quick power on/off, and constant brightness mode for maintaining a consistent visual experience for the audience.”

Sheraton Doha Gets Refreshed
W
-DMX by Wireless Solution and lighting fixtures by Griven are now on display at one of Qatar’s premier 5-star hotels – the Sheraton Doha Hotel & Resort. The hotel structure has been a landmark in Doha for more than 30 years, so when it was time for renovation, every detail was considered to bring the building up to the highest technological standards while still maintaining its original look and charm. In addition to the interior, the upgrade involved the exterior lighting design of the hotel that would not only enhance the waterfront skyline but the unique 3-sided pyramid shape of the hotel as well. The close Al Majlis Congress Center, a secondary lower building with foursided pyramidal section, needed a complementary lighting scheme. Its
smooth, concrete surface proved to be quite difficult to be evenly lit up as the lighting fixtures could only be installed at a very short 4-metre maximum distances. In addition, to the need to not disturb hotel guests, both structures required an even colour distribution along with colour changing scenes.
roof of the hotel to sweep the sky of Doha at night. According to different occasions or needs, abstract patterns and various images can be projected on the front side of the concrete arm of the hotel with the help of powerful image projectors, such as GOBOSTORM PLUS MK2 and Zenith.
An assortment of Griven lighting fixtures were used for the exterior. The main façade of the hotel and the waterfront side are now equipped with Griven Powershine MK2 D RGBW, providing a tasteful wash effect. The waterfront side, as well as the lower part of the hotel terrace, have been enhanced by 43 units of Zaphir RGBW with wide and medium optics installed right onto the cornice of the roof.
All the LED fixtures are managed by a Wireless Solution W-DMX system directly from the control room. The DMX signal starts from the control room located on the ground floor of the hotel and is transmitted via 6 x W-DMX WhiteBox F-1 Transceivers to 10 x WhiteBox R-512 receivers, managing a total of more than 6 x DMX universes. 8 x WhiteBox F-2 repeaters are used to connect the fixtures of the Majlis Congress Center and other areas to the central wireless system.

project as it was necessary to manage and control lighting fixtures located in distant places and at a remarkable height. Moreover, the absence of cables and the possibility of controlling more than 5 DMX universes in a comfortable manner was a plus of the W-DMX system. In consideration of the top urgent completion schedule and of the peculiar architectural design of the Sheraton, all of the companies involved in this challenging project did a very good job.”
The user-friendly programming system is endowed with an array of different dynamic colour scenes that can be automatically or manually alternated according to festivities, occasions or daily settings.

Club kyo Gets Updated Version 2.0 Cranks Up The Watts With EAW And Powersoft

changed to give various liquor brands more prominence. There are also now rows of high tables facing the DJ booth for guests to stand and place their drinks. The tables also include space below for guests to place their bags. A simple gesture but one which is very much appreciated, especially by the ladies. There is an unpolished industrial look to the space which fits in nicely with its basement location. With the elimination of the dining aspect, the club is now able to accommodate up to 400 patrons.
C
lub kyo, a basement club located within the financial district, at Cecil Street, recently celebrated its 2nd anniversary with a refreshed approach. Standing on its own, it can be best described as a “destination venue”, as guests come for the sole purpose of patronising the club, unlike Boat Quay or Clarke Quay where a number of venues are literally beside each other, enabling one to venue hop. This means the owners of Club kyo, Singapore-based lifestyle group, Limited Edition Concepts Pte Ltd (LEC), had to ensure that guests form an indelible impression of the space, the ambience, the staff and other guests. Adjusting and transforming spaces, especially entertainment venues, is a given. Especially since patron profiles change, tastes change and sometimes you just need to update to keep up with changing demands. That is what Club Kyo has done.
What’s Changed?
Club kyo operates four days a week from Wednesdays to Saturdays. Version 1.0, had dining options in the evenings with the venue transforming into a dance club as the sun went down.
Version 2.0 sees the venue eliminating the food portion and dedicating early evenings to bar patrons while the later part of the operations sees the club metamorphosing into a fullfledged dance venue. Godwin Pereira, Co-Founder of LEC, commented, “Effectually we have changed the efficiency of the place to cater to more traffic.” Design wise, the change is subtle. The original bar, which is 29 metres, is three sided thus enabling staff to serve guests with ease. The Bar back design has been
One key and noticeable change is the DJ booth, which has been shifted but still maintains it whopping 7.8m in length. The booth now accommodates the operator for the visuals (a new element), the lighting operator, as well as the DJ. Godwin, ranked as one of the top DJs in Singapore and who still loves to spin once in a while, maintained the desktop set-up complete with a movable table top to accommodate the consoles. “The idea is to make it easy to plug and play the gears for the DJ.”
Making The Watts Count
The shift in focus also meant that the Club had to crank up its sound. “In

Godwin reinforces the fact that this ensures even distribution and the same dB whether you are in the standing space or seated. In addition, there are now a number of Samsung displays installed on one side of the wall that enables the venue to display announcements, offer graphics and visuals to stimulate the environment. 8 units of EAW SB1001 subwoofers provide the thumping sound at the dance floor
effect we have boosted the sound from 34,000 watts to 62,000 watts now,” said Godwin. Godwin decided to continue to keep faith with systems integrator and supplier, Electronics and Engineering Pte Ltd who offer EAW and Powersoft solutions. “We have basically complemented the sound system with more power. The EAW speakers and the Powersoft amplifiers have served us well and we knew that the solutions would help us achieve our objectives with ease. The increase in speakers and amplifiers enable us to have a lot more headroom, so that we do not need to drive the system full throttle. What this does is enable us to crank up the audio at the dance floor area but still maintain an even coverage across the space that allows for patrons to communicate without screaming at the top of their lungs.” The dance floor now vibrates to the tune of 4 x additional EAW SB1001 subwoofers, making a total of 8 x subwoofers. The original 4 x ceiling-
suspended 12-inch EAW QX596i three-way loudspeakers are now complemented with 2 x EAW QX396 full range loudspeakers. All the speakers and subs are driven with additional Powersoft DIGIAM M20D, DIGAM K6 and DIGAM K8 amplifiers complementing those that were already installed. As part of the upgrade, the 2 x EAW UX3600 digital system processors from the previous installation have been replaced by 3 x EAW UX8800 processors to accommodate the additional outputs. The DJ Booth now features 2 new units of EAW MW15, Micro-Wedge Stage monitors and 2 new EAW SB184Z single 18-inch subwoofers driven by Powersoft Digam K3 amplifiers. “The microwedges to be honest are delivering way beyond what I had expected,” said Godwin. “When I first saw them I was not convinced that they will be able to deliver but I have become a believer now. I like the volume but more importantly, I like the clarity. It offers the DJs a clear view of what is happening.” Godwin added, “This booth is not for amateurs. You need to be 100% focused on what you are doing. We’ve even had international guest DJs who felt slightly intimated by the sheer power and size of the booth. To put it bluntly, you need to be at a top level to handle the systems here.” The rest of the space maintains what was already installed, which is 10
The Response
According to Godwin the changes have been well received. “On average, guests stay 3 to 4 hours. Thus, it is important that the sound system does what it is meant to do but at the same time it should not create hearing fatigue for the guests as this would ruin their experience.” “I believe we have created more of a dance club environment with the dance floor providing the ultimate experience for our guests.” www.clubkyo.com www.enepl.com.sg Photos Credit: warrenwee.com (Warren Wee Photography)

Electro-Voice Gives Alkaff Mansion A New Lease Of Life A building which has its own rich history has now been brought into the 21st century thanks to an installation of EV speakers and Bosch PLENA matrix system by Bosch Key Partner, Diesel Lee. Elissa Nadine explores the changes.
A
lkaff Mansion is a 19th-century colonial bungalow that became known in the 1930s for hosting high society parties. It has gone through many phases since its construction, serving as the headquarters of the World Buddhist Society for more than a decade before being converted into a restaurant and party venue in the 1990s. After being returned to the government in 2004, the mansion was left vacant for a number of years. However, it was given a new beginning in 2011 when the Singapore Land Authority took ownership and awarded the LHN Group the tender to convert the building into an authentic Italian restaurant. Fast forward to 2015, Alkaff Mansion is now a high profile restaurant that also
hosts weddings and corporate events on a regular basis. In order to keep up with the demands of clients and exceed the standards that come with its reputation, the Alkaff Mansion approached Diesel Lee for an intuitive sound upgrade that would enhance the experience of guests, both in design and quality. As a Bosch key partner, Diesel has trusted in the quality of Electro-Voice (EV) systems for more than 5 years. Therefore, it was only natural that he’d recommend EV and Bosch equipment to provide the venue with enough bang for their buck. “EV provides a complete range of audio products with excellent sound quality. Its wide range of speakers fit into the building's vibe naturally.”
Alkaff Mansion had an existing sound system which was installed since the opening of the restaurant. But with an increasing need for a good audio system to create the perfect ambience for their patrons, the management at Alkaff Mansion decided to work with professionals in the audio industry to assist them in bringing their sound system to the next level. To accommodate as many events as possible, Alkaff Mansion's function spaces have been loosely divided into 3 sections: The Gazebo, Grand Marquee and Main Ristorante.

providing full-range audio. In addition, the mounting point of the speakers is on a metal plate which can be easily replaced. The audio for the alfresco dining is covered by 2 x EVID 6.2, for the best dining experience. The sound system is controlled via 1 x Dynacord CMS 1000 mixer and further enhanced by 1 x DCONE 2-in/6-out processor for maximum quality.
Grand Marquee
For weddings or parties that need to accommodate up to 400 guests, the Mansion's Grand Marquee is the place to be. A function room that is used hand in hand with the Gazebo, it is a grand room of about 30ft-long/10ft-wide and was one of the most challenging areas to work with. “There should not be any speaker located on the ground of the Grand Marquee as the arrangement is very

The Gazebo
The Gazebo encompasses the outdoor terrace of the venue and is dotted with vintage rocking chairs, a pair of ornate fountains and a romantic roofed gazebo. It is the first section to greet guests when they arrive and it is also the most breathtaking as it is surrounded by lush greenery and a background of a 19-hectare park. The roofed gazebo is the main draw here and it is also a popular spot for couples to say 'I Do'. “We were not allowed to mount anything permanently onto the heritage structure” explained Diesel. “In fact, that was the most prominent guideline for this project for this area. Since Alkaff Mansion is a heritage building, there were a lot of restrictions such as, no mounting of speakers in the building, road excavation works for the cabling, etc. We had to explore ways to install the cables and mount the speakers without affecting the building and leaving them out of sight as much as possible.”
In order to match the scenery to the sound and with the other restrictions, Diesel chose 4 units of EV's elegant EVID 4.2TW Surface Mount Speakers. The white speakers blend in with the gazebo's metal structure while still

“We aimed to get a balanced SPL across the whole room. Each speaker in the Marquee is individually programmed and specifically EQ’d to meet different frequencies that resonate with the room structure and coverage area.” - Diesel Lee, Bosch Key Partner dynamic. The speaker must provide the best audio quality for all types of events. We hope not to see too many cables running around ” explained Diesel. “In fact, that was the simple minimum guideline for this area. With the design and audio specifications met, the ZX1s would have been enough for any regular function room. But this was no regular function room. “Sometimes there are parties held in the Grand Marquee that require that extra punch. The owners wanted the effect of sub-woofers but did not want them to be placed anywhere on the ground as the placement of stage and furniture in the room changes with every event. Most customers also do not like to sit near a subwoofer.” Working closely with Bosch, the team used their expertise and creativity to their full advantage and chose to mount 2 x EVF-1122S 12'' full-range loudspeakers to serve as the room's subwoofers. “Even though [the EVFs] are not meant to be used as subs, we programmed them so that they could add that extra punch while maintaining some mid and high.” Weighing nearly 30kg each, the 'subs' are mounted with metal chains to the structure's beams at the furthest point from the entrance of the room. To prevent any mishaps, the SPL of each individual speaker was limited to prevent anyone from driving the system too hard and causing the balance of the sound in the room to shift and high vibration of the structure. The tuning for the EVFs alone took about 3 hours and “one full day to get the
acoustics of the room to work correctly” as the structure is not “sound-friendly”. “We aimed to get a balanced SPL across the whole room. Each speaker in the Marquee is individually programmed and specifically EQ'd to meet different frequencies that resonate with the room structure and coverage area. All loudspeakers are strategically placed and aligned to provide an even sound level distribution across the whole of the audience coverage area.” Time delays and output levels were set on the DSP for the distribution of sound to the ZX1 speakers in reference to the Front-Of House EVF speakers as “one sound”. With this setup, the stage can be placed in any part of the Grand Marquee, with the system providing good sound distribution and audio quality response always. Driving the system is another Dynacord CMS 1000, chosen for its quick set-up and built-in discrete mic preamps, 1 x EV
Dx46 FIR-Drive system processor, 1 x EV Q1212 + Q99 power amplifiers, RE320 Wireless Microphone.
Main Ristorante
With its sophisticated décor, Alkaff Mansion's Main Ristorante has 2 levels and encompasses 2 main dining halls, 4 private dining rooms, a lobby reception and the exclusive Bar 1918. Here an audio design upgrade was not just a luxury, it was a necessity. Before the upgrade, the system was running on an audio design from the early 2000s. With 4 private dining rooms, a bar, a lobby reception and 2 levels full of customers with different tastes, staff members were up to their necks in volume control and had never been introduced to multiple zoning. There were only 2 volume controls, 1st level and 2nd level. Eric Goh, Alkaff Mansion's Assistant Catering and Events Operations Manager, explained, “In the past, we had to run up and down from the top level to the control room on the first level to get the volume right for all the customers. We communicated via walkie-talkies to ensure the sound was just high or low enough.” Once he was introduced to the project, Diesel immediately knew that zoning was needed to improve the quality of operations. once with ease, Diesel chose the Bosch PLENA matrix Digital Sound System that can be controlled remotely or with wallmount controllers. “The PLENA matrix was the hardest thing to get approval for, as the existing system was still working fine and the multiple zoning control concept was new to the management. Even though the management was nervous at first, they have now seen how much it benefits their day to day operations. During the day of commissioning, the PLENA matrix app brought great excitement to the management team.” said Diesel. Using either an iPhone/iPad, managers can now adjust the Ristorante's volume and even change music channels, right
in front of customers, ensuring they get it just right. No more trips to the control room! “With the new PLENA matrix, I can control the volume from anywhere so it has helped operations become a lot smoother and where it took two people before, it now only takes just one of us standing in the private room or at the head of main dining halls to gauge the sound level,” affirmed Eric. “The new system is much more reliable than the old one. So far, there have been no hiccups. The only time, I thought we had a problem was when I accidentally pressed the mute function on the controller. I called Diesel and he helped me sort it out in no time. We are very
satisfied with the new system and, of course, the service provided by Diesel.” Looking back on the 2-month long project, Diesel shared, “Migration/ upgrading of systems as well as sound tuning could only be done during the restaurant's small windows of 'low customer rates'. This made it difficult but also rewarding when we got it right. Overall, this was definitely a challenging yet rewarding project and I look forward to working with them in the future.” www.electrovoice.com www.boschcommunications.com www.alkaff.com.sg

EAW Provides Comprehensive Coverage To Integration And Production Company, The P.A. People Tasked Adelaide Oval Local To Cover Venue With A Seating Capacity Of 19,000
T
he Adelaide Oval, home to the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) and South Australian National Football League (SANFL) as well as one of the premier entertainment venues in the country, recently underwent a major expansion and upgrade that included the installation of a new sound reinforcement system featuring EAW QX Series loudspeakers.
QX564i loudspeakers. Ten clusters, consisting of 2 x QX564i and 1 x QX544i loudspeakers, covered the eastern grandstand seating area. The southern stands had a much higher roof to work with, which required only four clusters to cover the seating area. Two clusters were single QX566i cabinets, while the other two were made up of one QX566i and one QX544i loudspeakers.
“It was a good sized project,” explained Brett Steele, manager installed systems for The P.A. People. “All in all we installed 27 separate clusters of EAW QX 500 Series loudspeakers to cover the majority of the stand seating areas. The objective was to provide comprehensive coverage while keeping the PA as unobtrusive as possible.” The western grandstand is covered by 11 clusters, each made up of 3 x
The P.A. People created custom metal brackets that were used to fly the clusters from the lip of the overhangs with the assistance of a 150 foot boom. Managing Director of The P.A. Martin Pro Ups The Ante For The Mirror Lounge & Club
W
ith the opening of The Mirror Lounge & Club late last year, Seminyak, the international vacation hotspot on the west coast of Bali, has become an even more popular tourist destination. With a capacity of 1,000, the club is the latest, and one of the largest, high-profile additions to the Seminyak scene. To accentuate the club’s distinct layout and features, local integration firm Monalisa Tunggal Jaya (MJT) selected a wide array of HARMAN Martin Professional lighting fixtures, which they’ve been installing across Indonesia since 1996. Owned by Indonesian entertainment organization All In, Mirror caters to an eclectic mix of both local and foreign clubbers who are drawn to its unique layout design. Panelled mirrors are mounted in the corners of the club, which feature high ceilings and a
rectangular floor plan oriented around the DJ, dispersing the crowd to the sides of the stage. “Even with Mirror’s high ceilings and extended length, we were able to illuminate the whole area from top to bottom with Martin fixtures,” said MTJ’s Zandy Jong. “All In specifically requested the best products for its sophisticated clientele. Martin was the clear choice.” Jong considers Mirror one of Seminyak’s “most prestigious” clubs and believes it is unique not only in terms of construction, but also in concept. “Mirror’s symbol is a mythological owl and we designed the lighting environment around the club’s central massive owl statue, which is perched high above the crowd,” said Jong. “Together, the owl and the lights, especially the RUSH MH 3 beam, end up presenting a visual spectacle.”
The RUSH MH 3 is a powerful beam moving head that blasts an intense and narrow long-throw beam, capable of creating several effects including a dimmer, strobe effect, 8-facet prism and focus. Jong’s team deployed a comprehensive selection of Martin products not limited purely to lighting fixtures. All the lighting fixtures and the JEM Compact Hazer Pro units are controlled by the Martin Light Jockey lighting controller. “Martin products are consistently reliable and smooth so we’re always comfortable deploying them in clubs like Mirror,” said Jong. “The MAC 101s get a lot of attention, but it’s the combination of all the Martin gear including the RUSH MH 3s that creates such a visually dynamic atmosphere in Mirror’s distinct space.” www.martin.com

UAV Celebrates Precise Sound With L-Acoustics Systems By Elissa Nadine
U
niversal AV Pte Ltd (UAV) has been helping a Global Top Life insurance company celebrate their staff's achievements for the past 3 years. During the company's recent Awards Night, held at the Marina Bay Sands Grand Ballroom in Singapore, the team from UAV deployed a full L-Acoustics system to provide just the right audio coverage for all 1,700 guests. Ruben James, Chief Operations Officer at UAV shared, “The client preferred not to have speakers clattered everywhere and the wide coverage of the speakers provided by L-Acoustics' systems were the perfect solution.” To avoid the clatter, 12 x L-Acoustics K2 loudspeakers were flown with 6 on each side of the stage.
“I have used the V-DOSC system before but I must admit the K2s have a much greater headroom and melodic warmth in them.” - Mohan, UAV Sound Engineer using the L-Acoustics' SOUNDVISION 2.2 Software which provides 3D acoustic and mechanical simulation. A popular software among users of L-Acoustics systems, SOUNDVISION “gives great flexibility to configure sound” as it allows designers to calculate SPL levels as well as delay coverage. The team used the software with ease and Vinod attributed it to helping the engineer “determine the height of the array to be flown and how the sound dispersion would be since this was an indoor event.”
“Due to the venue and the magnitude of the event, we decided to use LAcoustics K2 system. It’s smaller and more compact as compared to the K1 or V-DOSC. The K2 system is also advanced in its technology,” said Vinod Sivapillai, UAV’s Technical Director . The K2 system is a rescaled 12'' compact version of the K1 that is capable of adjustable horizontal directivity, operating from 35 Hz to 20 kHz.
Sharing his experience with the new system, Mohan said, “I have used the V-DOSC system before but I must admit the K2s have a much greater headroom and melodic warmth in them.”

the system and the team behind it. A spokesperson commented, “The sound was really comforting to the ears. There was a lot of body in the acoustics and it was just brilliant sound projection and coverage.” Since its inception, UAV has built a strong reputation based on technical expertise and has an impressive resume that encompasses exhibitions, seminars, conferences and even concerts. A company heavily involved in all aspects of the latest technology, UAV showcases creativity in the most demanding events and feel even more confident now with their new K2 system. On his experience with the K2s, Ruben James concluded ,“This was a big ballroom set-up and we managed to get top quality, clear and precise sound. We're already looking forward to using the K2's at our next event!” www.uav.com.sg www.l-acoustics.com

d&b Creates An Orchestra At Sea

the stereo image. At most, I did do some very conservative stereo panning.”
The Dubai-based company was so confident in the quality of d&b systems that they pushed the Y-Series straight into the public eye for the Abu Dhabi Volvo Ocean Yacht Race. A sporting event held at sea and surrounded by a 30-day series of concerts which featured rock, pop and Arabic music, plus prestige performances by the Dubai Orchestra and the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
“The stage was mounted directly to the sea floor on the shoreline, hence the distance to the first row,” explained eclipse’s Head of Audio, John Parkhouse. “Audience area overall was approximately 80m wide and 25 rows deep, so we covered an area some 25m deep front to back. We chose sound engineer Marc Lewis specifically for his expertise working with orchestras, though he mixed every concert bar the night of Arabic music. He was very focused and did excellent work. Simply put, from the day of its arrival, the Y-Series never ceased to amaze us on every event on which it was used.”
“In terms of imaging a symphonic performance, normally there are issues with achieving balance because part of the audience is in proximity to the horn section, while others are closer to the strings,” explained Sound Engineer, Marc Lewis, on one of the more unexpected aspects of this event. “But in this instance, the 15m from front of stage to audience worked in our favour. The longer the distance, the more balanced
“An open stage on the water meant it was about as anechoic as it could
be,” continued Lewis. “So I reached for some ‘hall’ EQ, again bleeding that in conservatively, otherwise the sound was too dry. We close mic’d every other instrument: nearly all Neumann. For the soloists, again, because of the throw distances involved, the need to work on localising the sound image to them was moderated.” Not that Lewis didn’t encounter some difficulties.“James Ehnes, the violinist with the Birmingham Symphony, did step slightly off his mark when he came to the front stage edge to solo. He has a ludicrously expensive violin so I mic’d it much as I would in a studio, using a stand from behind, leaning toward the F hole at about a foot to eighteen inches. When I saw he was off his mark I did have to request a tech go onstage and shift the mic. I had already instinctively reached for the gain so I didn’t lose
“The constant directive dispersion of the [d&b] M4 combined with its phenomenal SPL and response, allowed me to shoot exactly what I wanted where I wanted with zero to minor processing. It made my experience as enjoyable as mixing for my own ears.” - Wissam Shaheen, Monitor Engineer

him, here I was really helped by the rear rejection off the d&b system, it meant I could really up the gain more than I had expected. In that sense, the combination of the d&b system and that idealised mic position was the perfect combination.” There were other unexpected benefits from placing the stage at sea. “When John and I first looked at the job we imagined the subs would be a mono bloc on the dockside. So far in front of the flown main PA this was not ideal, and I foresaw all kinds of issues with delay and phase shift. But eclipse indulged us, putting the system in six days ahead of the rehearsals. That meant we had time to experiment. I’ve worked with John Parkhouse before and he and I decided it would be well worth trying the Y-SUBs flown above the main Y8 and Y12 line array. It would mean the whole system would be totally phase and time aligned and the crossover between the different elements within the system would be effectively invisible by the time they had reached the first rows of the audience.” “We had six or seven hours to play with this configuration, using a variety of program material, but we knew almost immediately it would work, we were just being thorough. And that’s how it proved, completely clear to mix off. The Y-Series was the closest I have ever come to mixing a live orchestral show off something that sounded like studio monitors.” Parkhouse also sought out a specialist engineer to handle monitor duties. “Putting an orchestra on an open stage with no concert hall acoustic to work from meant monitors would be mission critical to performance. I contacted d&b Germany and their Education and Application Support department recommended Wissam Shaheen from Seebeck Audio based in Lebanon. The Dubai Orchestra, drawn from musicians across the UAE performed
on this occasion as the ‘Blue Planet’ Orchestra. Conducted by composer George Fenton, this was a performance of Fenton’s compositions for the David Attenborough BBC television series of the same name. Fenton has toured and performed this work through Europe and further afield. Birmingham Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Michael Seal. They performed Benjamin Britten’s Four Sea Interludes, Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Bruch’s Violin Concerto No.1 - lead violinist James Ehnes. Knowing the impact of the Orchestra would be highly based off audio, Shaheen thought, “My mixes were based exactly on the question: ‘What would that section of the orchestra hear while performing in a concert hall?’ To achieve that, we placed 4 x d&b M4 wedges on the corners of the stage and 2 x M4s in 'house mode', stand mounted, with their horns rotated 90-degrees to get the 50° x 70° dispersion for the choir side fills. Each of the wedges had a separate mix and both of the side fills were linked together on a single mix.” “Musicians would typically hear the direct, dry sound of their instruments, mixed with a ‘wet’ mix of the total orchestra, with respect to the different dynamics of the different instruments and to their seating plan on stage,” he continued. “For example, downstage right wedge had a bigger portion of violas, cellos and double basses, a fair amount of the 'firsts’ and a hint of woodwinds. That, mixed with what was acoustically reaching that section, gave the ‘hall’ feel to that area. The constant directive dispersion of the M4 combined with its phenomenal SPL and response, allowed me to shoot exactly what I wanted
93
where I wanted with zero to minor processing. It made my experience as enjoyable as mixing for my own ears.” Parkhouse reported: “All I saw were musicians smiling and that's always good news for a monitor engineer.” Possibly one reason why Shaheen has recently moved to eclipse to take up a senior audio engineer appointment. “That said, I am still a member of the Seebeck Audio family and I will keep on flying in to work with them during their peak season. Fortunately it is the opposite of eclipse's peak season.” The series of concerts has now reached a successful conclusion. Chris Szuberla, the Technical Director for Blue Planet in Concert was impressed, “Our experience of working with eclipse and their team on this event was extremely enjoyable and the show sounded fantastic. Despite being outdoors, with the orchestra floating out on the water, the sound was so natural. Congratulations to John and his crew for making it happen in what was a technically challenging location.” Lewis was similarly enthused, “The shows were quite an emotional ride, especially the orchestral performances. John and the team he assembled from eclipse did a stunning job. This was my first live concert with the d&b Y-Series. I had used d&b before in corporate events, but not like this. My first time using them was mind blowing, in no small part due to flying the subs. For a concert of this magnitude it was as hi-fi as it’s possible to be.” eclipse.ae www.dbaudio.com

Yehuda Poliker Shines With Robe BMFLs “You can build some very intricate cues [with the BMFLs] and that’s what I like – the ability to be really detailed and precise” - Eyal Tavori, Artist's LD Photos: Louise Stickland

P
opular Israeli singer, songwriter and musician Yehuda Poliker played a high profile concert at the 2,500 capacity Charles Bronfman Auditorium in Tel Aviv, a show that came alive with Robe BMFL Spots and a 90 per cent Robe lighting rig supplied by Argaman Systems. The lighting was designed by Eyal Tavori – the artist’s long term LD and operated by Lighting Director Tsafi Dagan, who has also worked with Poliker for several years. The artist is constantly busy engaging in live performances and reaching out to the many fans and followers of his amazing 30 year entertainment industry career. A 50 metre semi-circular truss was flown above and around the stage - opening at the front, with lighting rigged on this and on the auditorium’s house bars. Originally Robe’s ColorSpot 2500E ATs were spec’d on his ongoing tour, however as soon as BMFL Spots became available - part of a delivery of 60 received by Argaman making a very decisive investment in the product - they were replaced with these.
Due to Argaman’s early adoption of the BMFL Spot, many shows in Israel, which has an incredibly rich repertoire of live performances, have benefitted from the power and versatility of this fixture. At the Charles Bronfman Auditorium, the BMFL Spots were rigged on different house pipes to maximize the perception of depth in the space.
integrated into the show, explained Tsafi.
Approximately 4 metres off the stage was another semi-circle of truss – this one constructed from mini-beam - also arching around the stage and rigged on 10 x floor based stands. On this were 24 x LEDBeam 100s and 8 x MMX Spots.
The challenge in lighting the Yehuda show is always to ensure that Poliker remains the centre of attention onstage, and simultaneously offering the audience plenty of looks and scenes that are ‘easy on the eye’.
Hanging below the curved mini-beam truss were 90 x pixel mapped LED strips also curving around which, together with the truss itself, added a structural feel to the space. The BMFL Spots were used for intense and potent back light, cutting through to light the band, and with gobos added, creating atmosphere and ambience onstage.
From a technical viewpoint Tsafi, who also works as a technician, said he personally likes Robe products because of the light weight and the reliability which consequently means a slicker and more streamlined tool as compared to competitor products.
LD Eyal was delighted with the results and when they did the swap-out and he started using the BMFLs in situ, he realized the extent of its huge potential first hand. Now with several BMFL Spot shows behind them, they are still coming up with new and different ideas to be
He personally loves the BMFL Spot for its power, colour mixing and fast movement. “You can build some very intricate cues and that’s what I like – the ability to be really detailed and precise”.

Delta Sound Delivers Perfect Sound @ RedFest 2015 L-Acoustics Systems Fly High For 2nd Edition Of Middle East's Biggest Music Festival

This year, Delta had the same goal, as with any other project - to deliver the best sound production possible. Festival`s highlight were acts such as The Script, Iggy Azalea, Bastille, Kiesza, GRL, Jeremih or KidInk.
to try and keep the sound contained in the bowl. We had other stages in close proximity and Delta also made a conscious attempt to try and reduce the noise off-site. The K1 Subs gave the engineers extra sub in the air thus reducing the amount of sub needed from the floor SB28,” explained Al Woods of Delta Sound.
Contracted by promoters Done Events, Delta Sound were once again the main supplier of the full PA system and full production control for both main stage and the additional ‘Reebok Classic stage.’ RF, IEM and microphone package for the two-day event were supplied as per artists' requirements.
“As I arc the ground subs to widen the horizontal pattern by driving them less it reduced the off-site spill. The Kara outfills stacked on the stage gave me the ability to just fill a small pocket that the K1 main didn’t cover, again, without spilling out of the bowl as much as a large hang of K2 would, for example,” Al added. “Initially, I was concerned by the mix position being off to one side. But after walking the field I found the horizontal coverage to be very even and a very good representation of the whole system was achieved at FOH. You have to love the K1 for that!”
Due to the amount of control equipment required at FOH the areas had to be larger than usual. So to avoid unnecessary sight line issues the promoter split the positions from centre to 25m stage left for Audio and Stage Right Video and Lighting. “I took a slightly different approach with the system this year, the main system stayed as [L-Acoustics] K1 but I flew K1 Subs behind as an addition and reduced the outfills to Kara and ground stacked them. The reason for these changes was
On stage monitoring consisted of L-Acoustics 115XT speakers for floor monitors, Arcs wide and SB28 subs for side fills and a mixture of SB18 and SB28 subs for DJ fills and drum subs. The IEM and RF systems consisted of Sennheiser 5000 series and Shure UR4
radio microphones and Sennheiser 2050 and G3 IEM. The Patch for all the stage monitors, side fills and IEM was controlled electronically via 2x BSS Soundweb, a Galileo and LA Network Manager. Devised by Delta`s Engineer Mehdi Khelil it meant that no physical patch changes were needed from any console. At the push of a button, mixes were sent to the right IEM or amplifier input. The speaker preset was also changed to avoid unnecessary stage monitor patches. Consoles, the generic “flip flop” FOH and Monitor control used 4 x Digi Design Avid Profiles and a 60 way Delta Passive split system. The Script were supplied with a Digico SD7 at FOH and a Soundcraft VI6 at monitors, plus a Delta Sound 72 Way Split . Mics and stands were also supplied for all but two of the artistes. “It was a long meticulous process sifting through the artists riders, making sure that everything was exactly as per their requirements. As for our team, on stage we had Mehdi Khelil, Phil Down, Tom Gelissen and Glen The Mod did a fantastic job. Mehdi looking after RF coordination, Tom the consoles, and Phil and GTM running patch and mixing up. It was a long hard few days for all of us but the result was worth all the effort,” closed Al Woods. www.deltasound.ae
“I took a slightly different approach with the system this year, the main system stayed as [L-Acoustics] K1 but I flew K1 Subs behind as an addition..after walking the field I found the horizontal coverage to be very even and a very good representation of the whole system was achieved at FOH. You have to love the K1 for that!” - Al Woods, Delta Sound

Have U Met...? E-TECH ASIA May - June 2015
Sound Engineer - Philippines 27 years of running on passion is how we can best describe Angelo Rozul's involvement in the sound industry. Well respected and sought after, there is little doubt that Angelo's life revolves around consoles, music and artistes. Currently working as a freelancer, Angelo has also been involved in numerous album recordings. Adding to an already impressive resume, he also does live mixing for three local artists in Manila, Rico Blanco, Aiza Seguerra, and Hale.
What sparked your interest in the audio industry?
Angelo: I’ve been a fan of listening to music in a nice High Fidelity set-up since I was a kid. So when the opportunity to work inside a recording studio came by I grabbed it instantly. I got into the industry in 1988 or 89, when I was just 19. After almost two years in a studio as an assistant to the engineer, two of the studio’s regular clients gave me a break to mix. Those two songs became a hit. There was a tremendous sense of happiness and satisfaction every time their songs were played in the radio. I think that was also a strong catalyst where I became more serious with my work.
Did you go through any formal training?
Angelo: No, I did not receive formal training per se, but I had my mentors like Mike Pedero, Owner of Tracks Studios and Jofel Meimban Chief Engineer of Tracks at that time. I consider them as my foundation/core of what I’m doing now. Experience is a big part of how I learned.
How did you first get involved with the industry?
Angelo: I started when I was student of Don Bosco Technical School. On-the-job training was required before graduation
and I asked my mom for help because she worked in a radio station at that time. My mom introduced me to her friend who owned a recording studio. That’s Mike Pedero and that was the first time I entered the industry, with Tracks studios. After my on-the-job training and graduating from school, I was offered a technical maintenance and assistant post to a sound engineer of Tracks Studios. And that’s how it all started.
what happened at that time, to make the band sound as great as possible.
What was your first live sound involvement?
If you were not in this industry what would you be doing?
Angelo: That was almost 20 years ago. I can’t quite recall the exact date and year but it was for Rivermaya*, a band and a regular studio client. They asked me to mix front of house for them. It was for the Lotus Eaters concert – the famous English new wave band and Rivermaya was the opening act. (*Rivermaya is one of the most influential and critically acclaimed rock bands in the Philippines).
How was that experience?
Angelo: It was unforgettable. Cause I’m really used to mixing inside the studio and this was the first time I did a live mixing – it was definitely a memorable experience and I learned a lot. I felt nervous at first since it was live and I had to ensure that I did justice to the band's sound. I observed everything I did and
Who is your inspiration or role model? Angelo: A lot of them are in the recording industry. I like the hearing acuity of Mike Pedero. I also like the works of Bob Clearmountain, Bruce Swedein , Cris Lord Algae & Tom Lord Algae.
Angelo: It wouldn’t be all that different, because I love electronics and I love listening to music. I would probably be involved in something technical.
What advise do you have for those just coming into the industry?
Angelo: Follow your heart and you’ll never go wrong. Every experience is profitable.
What else would you like to achieve or hope to achieve?
Angelo: I’m really happy with what I’m doing now. I really love my work. And to know that a lot of people trust me is already a big achievement. I’m contented with my life now. I’ll just go with the flow.
