Living Technology

A few months ago, I had been to a hotel in Mumbai, which wasn’t a great luxury statement. While that made me undercut my appreciation for the place, the waiter near my table took me by wonderment. Even as I was looking at him in anticipation, he showed the iPAD already docked on the table, and advised me to choose my dish. Even as I struggled to keep pace with the gadget’s icons, he helped me find my choice and ‘placed the order through the device’ on my behalf. The food served was, of course, real. No virtual stuff that is. I, however, wondered if the gadget had the compatibility for a payment gateway too. Ironically, or not, it wasn’t. Just the previous week, I was sharing an idea or two with an SI friend of mine on the way ‘control mechanisms’ in the industry had been shaping up. That I was conceptualizing a feature on the subject, we ended up broaching on how these ‘new age gadgets’ have come to impact public life, and seemed to replace acknowledged high tech control systems in the professional domain. There have already been proven instances of these ‘smart gadgets’ elevating from mere entertainment/ presentation multimedia stuff to delivering professional functions in a business setting. For me, watching from outside, it is an interesting scenario. Even as established manufacturers are trying to better one another by innovating themselves to multiple levels, there’s a new species emerging with potentially impacting factors. Befittingly, keeping in with the law of natural progression, this new species is already getting smaller- to the size of an iPhone. With the tech environment around getting densely cast with IP and wireless, clouds, I’m tempted to visualize a scenario at a distance where the miniature gadgets take over the ‘control’ domain and accomplish the multitude of tasks on mere ‘finger tips.’ Sounds outrageous? Time is there to prove it- either way. My friend quipped: “For now, it’s just C++. Videology announces leadership for global expansion INTERNATIONAL: Videology— a digital advertising platform and solutions provider—has announced additions to its management team to power the rapid expansion of its global network in 2013. In 2012 the company took its marketleading video advertising platform—as well as its expanded capabilities in display, rich media and mobile— into eight new markets with further expansion planned this year. NEC establishes branch office in Myanmar

MYANMAR: NEC Corporation has established a branch office in Yangon, Myanmar, aiming to develop the country’s information and communications technology (ICT) and social infrastructure. The new officebegan operations in January 2013. Recently, Myanmar’s unique geography, abundance of natural resources and movement towards democracy are attracting the attention of businesses throughout the world. In order to support the rapid economic growth that

is expected in the future, the country is deeply in need of infrastructure improvement, where reports indicate that just 3% of the nation’s roughly 62 million people subscribe to fixed or mobile telephone lines. Christie MicroTiles used by SBS to broadcast election results “In the by-election held in April 2011, SBS used MicroTiles for the broadcasting of election results. They were rather satisfied with the flexibility of the MicroTiles to stack up to form different shapes as well as the image quality. The MicroTiles had significantly differentiated SBS’s appeal to the viewers against other broadcasting stations to achieve a viewer rating of 13 percent in the April 2011 election,” observed In Tae Kim, president, System Ray, one of the distributors for the provision, installation and technical support of the Christie MicroTiles.

SOUTH KOREA: Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS), a private South Korean television and radio network, selected Christie® MicroTiles® to broadcast the results of the 2012 presidential election held December 19, 2012. Live coverage of the 18th Republic of Korea presidential election on SBS commenced at 3:00 p.m. that day and ended at 12:30 a.m. the next morning. As one of the leading broadcasting stations in South Korea, SBS aimed to appeal to the TV viewers with a lively

telecast of the election results. To achieve the objective, SBS built a video wall within its studio using 140 Christie MicroTiles set in an array seven units tall by 20 units wide. Spectrum helps Galilee BP Church improve sound clarity SINGAPORE: The Galilee BiblePresbyterian Church has a long history in Singapore, having celebrated its 52nd Anniversary in June of 2012. The Church located in the west of Singapore features a worship hall with a balcony and a slopped ceiling. The various angles within the worship hall created a challenge for sound reinforcement. The Church nevertheless managed to minimise reverberations with its audio installation that featured a Soundcraft mixer and JBL speakers. However after the initial installation back in 2003, there was still some issues that the church faced. These included the lack of voice clarity when the preacher spoke as well as soft sound level at the balcony. Spectrum Audio Visual Pte Ltd, who were not the initial installers of the system, were called in to resolve the issues. Using a diagnostic programme, Spectrum spotted the problem areas and took immediate steps to resolve them. The first aspect included replacing the dbx Driverack 482 Legacy that was in the control room with the latest DBX Drive Rack 260 processor.

Spectrum's sound engineer was then able to tune the overall sound system on site. To solve the voice clarity issue, the correct frequency range was selected for

crossover settings of the speakers. Next, the gain for voice clarity was increased on certain frequency range. The overall gain of amplifier input for the balcony speaker was also increased to solve the balcony clarity issues. The speakers at the balcony were also enhanced by tuning the frequency response to give more high and mid high frequency. The church was very pleased with the outcome. “The processor has performed without trouble and we are happy with the overall sound quality. The sound clarity at the balcony is also much improved. Some members of the congregation were able to notice the improvement as well,” said Samuel Xie from the PA Team at the Galilee BiblePresbyterian Church. www.spectrum.com.sg

BSS Level 1 training

Extending the popular Soundweb London Level 1 Certified Training, Harman also conducted the Certified course on the modules of BSS Soundweb London with a series of BSS for System Integration companies in Bangalore, who were also joined by participants from the surrounding regions of Chennai and Kerala. The training was conducted by Ashish Bajaj, Manager Business Development, Harman India Professional, an experienced trainer for BSS Soundweb London & networked audio solutions covering about 15 participants from select cinema chains. learn to walk before running’ If the most accredited names from the ranks of InfoComm in Asia have to be picked up, the one that ranks first is Ranjit Singh Thaliwal. Head of Singapore-based RST Technologies, Ranjit’s first and foremost identity is being Asia’s first CTS-I from InfoComm. Having had his qualifying education from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Singapore, he started his first, world’s first telescopic projector lift manufacturing enterprise, en route to setting up his own pan-Asia AVSI consulting firm. An InfoComm Voluntary Trainer, Ranjit’s credentials have taken to the top echelons of AV training, installation and expertise. SIA caught up with the RST Technologies chief to grab his views on the Indian AVSI industry. Excerpts: SIA: What is your view of Indian AVSI industry today? Ranjit: Indian AVSI industry is doing good on many fronts. It’s very dynamic, with a fair amount of proactive tendency amongst the systems users. Their ability to harness cutting-edge technology of late has been commendable. AVSIs have been getting much more versatile in their approach; there is a fair amount of professionalism that is helping them think differently. With end users and clients evolving in mindset to invest for high quality solutions, I have to say the industry has been growing for the good. Having said that, it also has to be taken with a regret- the industry suffers from the death of skilled and certified professionals. The Indian industry appears extremely poor on this front. SIA: What technologies are driving the industry today? Ranjit: Just one word, one trend, and one technology- Cloud. I see that’s the most impacting technology, something that will bring about a paradigm shift

A game-changer!” in the way the AVSI operates and is perceived by users. A game-changer! SIA: What do you see as the biggest challenge facing the industry today? Ranjit: Thanks to Internet and other communication means, there is adequate awareness among the users about what a typical AVSI is about, and what it takes to have a meaningful set-up. In fact, in a good number of cases, it is the customers who are driving the design today. Five years ago, it was the AVSI who used to make decisions. Today, it’s the customer who calls the shots. Access to technology isn’t a concern too as the world is increasingly becoming flat. Budgets are neither a concern when the benefits of a particular technology or system is explained properly to the user. The customer is willing to invest in systems without bothering on budgets if the case is made clear. Having said all that, again, expertise is one big challenge, despite advancement on all other fronts. Enterprises and institutions have begun only in the last few years imparting training and/or education on the essentials of AV. So, the shortage is still very huge, and thus a remains a big challenge. SIA: Has the emergence of MNC establishments been a contributing factor to the growth of AVSI industry in the region? Ranjit: Not really. The ease of travelling, and communicating with distant entities for the desired systems and technologies has been making a significant difference. Also the returning NRIs with their exposure to the technology systems in advanced markets have been instrumental in bringing same or similar systems to Indian domain.

SIA: Would you associate ITES and AVSI in any aspect? If so, what areas you see as similar or overlapping? Ranjit: They both are different, though very important. One industry is managing the content flow, while the other is facilitating to hear and see the content. We, as AVSIs, share the same transport for sending our information from one area to the other. Now, what is overlapping is, interestingly, the area of business; they both are trying to do each others work- as a one-stop solution mindset. SIA: Would you be able to quantify the worth of Indian AVSI industry? Ranjit: According to InfoComm, this year (2012) the worth of the industry was supposed to be USD1.6 billion including Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. I believe it is much more than that, and it could have been even more if the industry players were not fighting with one another. SIA: Would the manufacturers' making their direct presence here help the cause of the industry? Ranjit: Yes, this helps the cause of the industry in many ways. One- better after sales service and support; two- ability to fine tune the products and related solutions to suit the region; threedirect and deeper interaction with the domestic industry to understand each other better; four- the educational programmes that some of the manufacturers have already been doing help increase the awareness levels and technological understanding of different product systems and concepts.

SIA: It is a chicken and egg situation between the industry and the administrative regimes in different States? Ranjit: I don’t think it is like that. If the potential in a particular region is properly exposed to the industry, the industry will come by itself. It looks like we do not share that, or are afraid to share. SIA: How has RST contributed to the cause of the industry in the region? Ranjit: I have to say I’m not sure if RST has contributed much to the cause of the industry in a way it wins applause all around. At my modest best, I can say some small contribution would be educating the industry, do it once, do it right for the installation part; do a design that can last at least five years. We always keep thinking ahead, and try to upgrade ourselves in the direction. SIA: What is the way forward for the industry? Ranjit: The way forward would be, to form an association in India, for the industry to mature holistically to be on par with the other regions/markets on the globe and work together. One simple line I like to use when I speak to my customers - ‘if you know your illness and also think you know the medication that can cure you, then do not bother going to the doctor.’ AVSIs should be leading the design, technology in the future and not the other way around. Lastly, we should all learn to walk before we run. The basics should be strengthened here, and then start to think beyond. www.rst.sg

Sennheiser’s guidePORT helps create immersive experience To make this happen the way they intended, the founders wanted a solutions provider who could act as single-point entity for a comprehensive and complete integration of all the solutions. A thorough scanning of the market and solution providers resulted in taking onboard New Delhi-based AV solutions provider Integrated Digital Solutions (IDS). Considering that while the exhibits would attract many, only a few of them would be really tech savvy to be able to use the audio guide system, it was decided to deploy only a three-language guide system for 150 visitors. The system would complete the tour in one hour, allowing for the second batch to continue.

Khoj Gandhiji Ki, an exploratory museum set up by the Gandhi Research Foundation in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, is actually a journey through the life of Mahatma. While the exhibits in the world’s largest Gandhian research institution depict the value systems that the Founder of Nation lived, the systems are rendered telling and experiential by means of the unique technology by Sennheiser India. An SIA perspective: When the Gandhi Research Foundation – a Jalgoan, Maharashtra-based initiative devised and dedicated to the spread of Gandhian philosophy and ideology – wanted to create a speciality centre that could holistically act as an audiovisual medium to propagate Gandhian values, the institution came up with the unique idea of creating an exploratory entity. Thus came into being the Khoj Gandhiji Ki, a museum by name, but an ‘experience centre’ by its impact and preference of the founders. Shaped in the form of hands offering prayers, the centre disseminates value systems from Gandhi’s life and teachings

through interactive, multimedia and audio visual medium - along with conventional forms like paintings, murals and panels.

Multiple rounds of intense debates and discussions led the founders to decide on deploying a customized audio guide system with a view to creating an immersive experience: ‘guiding the visitor through the ideals of Gandhi’ explained by means of simple story telling thereby involving the visitor as if he or she was part of Gandhi’s real-life experiences.

“We opted for Sennheiser’s guidePORT for this task,” says Mukesh Bhargava, CEO of IDS, “for the multitude of functional and services requirements, besides the flexibility for upgrading and up-scaling at any time, without scrapping the old installations.” While configuring the hardware Sennheiser guidePORT, due consideration was made to include provision of usher-based team leader, with his/her own unit, so as to allow them the freedom to experience the audio tour at their own pace and convenience. Two other languages were to be loaded- which seemed an easy task, yet the expectations from the IDS team were suddenly very high, with the IDS itself adding to it quite a bit of its own thinking. The creative heads at the integrators began to ideate to somehow integrate the audio-visuals, 3D projections, and lighting with the audionot originally conceived and perceived by the Foundation.

authors other than Gandhi himself and, therefore, important to present the emotions rather than the expression. The creative team in Integrated Digital Solutions thus had to get into a passionate mood to first understand and then write the story board - an experience that made them go through with what Gandhi would have really liked to convey. It was not to be mere story telling - it was designed with parts said in the words of Gandhi, and the background score going with the mood of the enactment. At the end of the process, the base script was re-written three times, two languages re-recorded twice and the narrator selected, after a full version recording, from amongst four voice-overs. This merrily guzzled resources in terms of time. It left very little time for the inauguration, to be done by the President of India. “It’s not just the ease and quality of the experience,” says the IDS chief. “It’s also about what the visitor carries with him/her as a long-lasting impact and a continuous inspiration.” The passion, therefore, running from within the IDS team went into making an impactful presentation. The work in the mixing studio continued round-the-clock, and the audio tracks were loaded through FTP - with the IDS engineering team virtually building the whole audio tour block-by-block. However, having already got inspired by the cause, IDS team assiduously worked it out to be able to complete the task within the given specified in time.

In order to achieve a perfect synchronization, new hardware solutions were considered and the sound design re-done to provide seamless integration between the audio and video- with the lighting following it up. “It is only after initial interaction and brainstorming with the team and the client, we churned the list of optimal requirements in terms of hardware, logistics and the experience of the visitor,” explains Mukesh. Reports kept pouring in after all the three languages were set up with fully integrated audio and video design. There was constant flow of visitors and it was then perceived that a real hotline service would have to be maintained at bay for any support required by the Foundation. There was soon a reward - the Foundation’s toying with the idea of additional hand units and two more languages. Soon, IDS was rewarded

with an extension enquiry of 100 more personal units and two more languages. While the integration of guidePORT units and the seamless synchronization of the programme alignment came out impacting in such a way that it captivated the users like never before, making all that perfectly in sync was the way the whole task was approached with. Loop aerials and other cables were all embedded in the wall during the conversion work itself- making the installation virtually maintenance free and yet flexible for up-scaling and upgrading for more languages or new stations / exhibits. According to Anshuman Dubey, Senior Product Manager, Integrated Systems at Sennheiser India, the GRF Museum project was similar to the one recently installed at Khalsa Heritage Centre project in Punjab, which was the second largest guidePORT project in the world and first in India. The technology is catching up in India and museums and art galleries are realizing the rich experience guidePORT offers. Harman at Fairmont Jaipur An Ode to the Pink City

hotel dishes out a grandiose and indulgent experience in every respect - world class accommodations; variety dining savouries; exclusive services including a sparkling outdoor pool; and full service spa. India’s first Fairmont has thus dished out a new definition of luxury hospitality in the city that has stylized the living.

Jaipur- the very name of the historic capital city of Rajasthan spells magic with its awe inspiring architecture and décor of stunning palaces and forts – enlivened by the great Mughals and Royal Rajputs of yore. In an integrated manner, they met all our requirements of aesthetics, quality sound and guest experience.” The whole exercise and the groundwork actually began as early as 2008. With, the size and scale of the project requiring a thorough planning and architectural evaluation, comprising multiple rounds of discussions and revisions. The group had conceptualized a heritage property to be restored into world-class hospitality destination and thus, hired an international interior designer from Bangkok to bring to life the grandeur of the great Moghul era. The task of reliving all that involved procuring genuine antique artefacts from across the State which the designers and developers have painstakingly undertook. The accomplishment of the ambitious task gives a grand visibility in every aspect of the p(a)lace in that the guest feels like a part of the Royalty, reliving the old Royal times. The rooms are huge with spacious bathrooms to give a palace feel, accessorized with silver plated wares in the room and bathroom, alike. A Royal experience can only be complete with blending in the sights and sounds of the bygone era, hence invigorating all senses. The hotel has invested in state-of-the art AV equipment for all the common areas, well-equipped fitness centre, an outdoor swimming pool, four treatment rooms, and a unisex salon and business centre to cater to all business needs of guests.

Harman – creating harmony all over

The distributed-audio background music system at the property is impressive, with more than 250 Harman JBL Control Contractor Series ceiling and wall-mount loudspeakers installed throughout the property, along with appropriate Crown


amplifiers, dbx Audio processors and zone controllers complementing a variety of AKG by Harman microphones best suited for conferencing and live event requirements. These systems have been installed at various sections of this vast property, including two Junior Ballrooms, two Grand Ballrooms, seven Meeting Rooms, and all public areas such as restaurants, reception pool area, landscape, etc. For creating a balance of adequate sound and discreet appearance, the JBL Control Contractor Series was an ideal solution. And while the audio components are largely concealed and the audio experience itself is intangible, the JBL range showcases the versatility and functionality combined with audio quality that ensures unparalleled hospitality standards, throughout the hotel. The speakers were installed using custom mounting hardware and custom grilles that were painted in a wide variety of colours, to match the décor of a particular location and ensure that the speakers blended invisibly with the Moghul theme – consisting of chatris; sheesha; gold paint; and hand paintings on the ceiling and walls as in the old palaces. The calibre of the setting demanded an uninterrupted maintenance of the system which is handled by an exclusive UPS system as well as a generator backup. The biggest challenge for the System Integrator and the team working

on the installation was the nature of the heritage property and inherent architectural features with diverse kinds of ceilings in each area. The speakers had to be installed in a fashion that they would sync into the grandeur of the décor and not spoil the ‘heritage impact’ that the ornate wooden fixtures or the ceiling weaved in. While due emphasis on sound quality has been laid upon areas like Bars and Banquets using Control 26 Series, special weather resistant speakers were proposed for Pool and Terrace so that no matter what the mood of climate, the music would sooth the mood of the guests. Also, every corridor across the hotel has been embellished with background music from Control 24 CT Micro speakers with the flexibility of zone-wise control using dBX technology. Harman’s AKG microphones have found one of their best expressions in the conferencing rooms of the hotel. “We were sure of the expectations we had to deliver in the first ever property of Fairmont in India conforming to the international standards,” says Karan Kathuria, National Sales ManagerInstalled Sound, Harman Professional India. “A project such as the Fairmont, with its premium location and concept, typically has extensive and precise AV requirements. We wanted to provide the hotel operations staff with the most ‘easily managed’ AV systems possible offering the best solution and support,” Kathuria says, adding, “we believe we

have been able to achieve it with ease. Experiencing Technology in Education

Weaving technology into education may be nothing new today, with most academic institutions talking technology matters even as they speak about education. However, doing it in the most sophisticated manner to set a new benchmark – and charting new direction, nay, dimension in higher education – is novel in its own right. Indian School of Business (ISB) at Mohali, outside Chandigarh, is both a statement and testament to this. The second (and branch) campus of Hyderabad-headquartered premier business school ISB is truly an experience in management technology, and vice-versa. An SIA exclusive.

The Grounding

When the Indian School of Business (ISB) in Hyderabad – India’s premier business school – recently opened its new (second) campus in the Knowledge City at Mohali, outside the Punjab capital of Chandigarh, it was not merely opening a new seat of higher education in business/ management; it was rather opening a domain of “technology-assisted learning” in business management. For, the expanse of technology embraced to impart education is a never-beforeendeavour in entire Asia, if not outside as well. An entirely greenfield project that it is, the new ISB campus is also a ‘wireless campus in totality’ with the entire communication mechanism running on IP. More, a wireless network weaved to stream Full HD 1080p content from any device and compatibility

with both Windows and Apple-based presentation software at 25 FPS full frame rate! In what is considered to be probably the largest digital integration in higher education in the continent, and particularly for digital solutions major Wow Vision, the ISB Mohali campus sought to chart an altogether new direction and dimension in business/ management education. The Design Concept

Designed by Perkins Eastman with RSP as the local architect, the 70acre new campus consists of the Main Administration Building; Academic Building; Auditorium; Executive Education Centre; Hostel and Hotel Housing; Faculty Housing and Recreation Centre. The institution, as a whole, is designed for a total of 210 students for a two-year course.


Critical to the design and the technology within is the concept of ‘one schooltwo campuses’ which means the two campuses will operate as a unified entity, with top visiting and resident faculty imparting cutting-edge management insights and practices by effecting a seamless integration through inter-campus exchanges and virtual connectivity. The core curriculum is the same at both campuses with each of them offering varying elective options. The Academic Building – the central seat of learning on the campus – comprises four large (72-seat) classrooms and four medium-size (46-seat) classrooms with racked seating, besides a total of five tutorial rooms and meeting spaces. The classrooms have been designed to be flexible multi-purpose spaces which can be set up for discussions; role playing and general classroom layouts for maximising the use while the tutorial rooms are meant for smaller discussions and meant for focussed learning opportunities. In addition, the cylindrical building also houses four tutorial/meeting rooms as well as video conferencing facilities.

Further, the Executive Education building also comprises three classrooms which are similar to those in the Academic Building.

The Team

Bangalore-based technology design consulting major T2 Consulting – who had been on-board the project from day one – played central to what the ISB Mohali stands today in technology. The AV, acoustics, and auditorium stage lighting have all been designed by T2 while the campus lighting is designed by Linus Lopez. The task of integrating the audio-visual systems across the campus had been entrusted to Dubaiheadquartered Genesis Integration LLC. Mumbai-based Tata Group concern Tata Consulting Engineers has been tasked with M&E consultancy.

video conferencing, streaming and full integration with the learning management systems. “This was an unusual opportunity,” says Chandrashekar Naik, Director of Design and Deliverables at T2 Consulting. “The goal of having the whole campus as a completely wireless entity opened new opportunities for working out a new level of ingenuity for student-teacher interaction and communication with others as well.”

It allows for single or quad system display of computer content, and is able to audio record all the sessions in any classroom. Further, it provides access to the centralised content server for video content in full HD, as well as online multi-choice and full Q&A; student-tostudent and student-to-teacher chat, besides a range of other features that are being integrated over time into the classroom teaching environments.” According to the T2 Chief, the Wow system installed allows for full collaboration as the output can be sent over the internet to any display device registered on the system, and any computer/laptop that is logged into the system can be displayed - weather in Hyderabad, Mohali or from any other location registered with the system.

in each classroom layout and that they had sufficient space for all the AV provisions. Acoustics of all of the spaces has been carefully designed to ensure full sound proofing from external noise and cross talk between rooms; and high level speech intelligibility in classrooms.

The first decisions taken were in the design of the visual display systems in each of the classrooms and tutorial/ meeting rooms. It was decided to have HD Rear Projection in the 72-seat Classrooms, and Front Projection for the 42 seat Classrooms (due to their space constraints), and LCD displays sized to the viewing distances for the Tutorial/ Meeting Rooms. Christie HD Projectors were matched with RPV rear projection mirror systems and diffusion screens for all of the rear projection spaces, while Christie HD Projectors and Dalite Electric Screens were selected for the front projection solutions. Seating layouts were adjusted to provide the best visual viewing angles and to ensure all seating was optimised in the viewing cones. According to Naik, the design they evolved, allowed them to ensure sight lines and viewing angles were optimised

“One of our biggest challenge was how to provide the wireless connectivity that would ensure full HD 1080p streaming over the wireless from any device and compatibility with Windows and Apple based presentation software at 25 FPS full frame rate,” said Kelvin Ashby-King Principal Consultant at T2 Consulting. “We tested over 12 different products before settling on the WOW Vision system,” he said, adding, “WOW was the only system that could provide real time 1080p streaming and did not require a dongle or specialised software installed on machine.” According to him, in normal instances, the integration is often blocked for software upload or use of USB ports for security reasons, which was not the case with WOW. The virtual software feature was a major reason for selecting the WOW solution. Explains Kelvin: “The Wow system provides full integration for teacher and student interfacing to the presentation

Wow Mini Veos have been deployed in the Tutorial/Meeting spaces and Wow Veos systems took in all of the classrooms. All classrooms have been cabled ready for full HD Video Conferencing with two each of the 72-seat and 46-seat classrooms fully fitted out with Polycom HD VC Systems. All the video-conferencing is over IP and allows for Intranet connection within the ISB domain via an MPLS connectivity between the campuses and IP connectivity though the Internet. The system is fully set up for audio and video over Skype. Moreover, all the classrooms have been provided with table embedded microphone for audio and video conferencing and full speech reinforcement using Revolabs technology, and high quality FOH and ceiling speakers. audio processors have been tasked with audio processing and telephone interfaces via hybrid AES interface cards. All the Meeting/Tutorial Rooms and the VC rooms have been treated with LED displays and Wow Mini Veos interfaces. All the rooms have also been provided with custom developed graphic interfaces for system operation designed to make all functions of the classrooms intuitive and easy for the teacher to operate “all major room functions controlled from a single button press on the main screen” explains Niak. “This was an interface design priority for us.”

“We, from Genesis, and Crestroncertified programmers worked together to create a user interface that is both cost-effective for a roll out of this magnitude, and, most importantly, easy for end users to work with functionality,” explains Leo Joseph Thomas, Deputy Manager, Genesis Integrated Communications Technology Pvt. Ltd. The beauty of the work is that the user’s working with the system is simplified to the point of having just press buttons for each of the presentation systems' inputs, volume controls, and dedicated screen controls.”

Creston control systems have been used for all systems control including lighting and blinds and iPads have been roped in as the main interface due to the excellent graphics and control features provided through the Crestron Software. The complete campus is managed via Crestron Room View and this is being fully integrated with the Learning Management Systems (LMS) and the Campus Management Software. Room Booking and Reservations Displays are also provided outside each classroom and tutorial/meeting room and are used for both room reservation and information sharing if classrooms are changed or classes postponed. Meeting/ Tutorial Rooms can be directly booked from the display or via the Campus Management System.

Another notable feature- one each of the large and medium classrooms has been equipped with Wow Ripple Lecture Capture Systems, and a portable system has also been provided to enable any other classroom where this is may be required. According to the integrator, the long term plan is to provide this feature in all the classrooms. “Wow Ripple provides for recording or live streaming of 2 HD video feeds, computer input for PPT and Annotation as well as full audio from teacher or students,” explains the integrator. “This allows for capture and storage of any lecture on the LMS system in multiple formats and downloading via podcast as well as live streaming over the ISB intranet or over the internet

again enhancing the collaboration and distance learning features of the installed systems.” “This is nothing but essentially a technology-assisted learning where each of the classrooms is enabled with a variety of sophistication and means of interaction that befits the stature of the institution,” summerizes DNV Kumara Guru, Director-External Relations, at ISB (Mohali). “While we constantly endeavour to expand our faculty, what becomes more important is the mode and methodology of programme delivery.” (Read separate box). For Ayushman Sinha, Vice PresidentInformation Technology at ISB (Mohali), “it’s virtual presence for physical experience and benefit.” Besides the ‘virtual sophistication,’ an important part of the technology message from ISB is green AV. The entire AV set-up is and operational mechanism is eco-friendly. “Systems in earlier times needed air-coolers to cool down the extreme heat generated by them,” says Sinha, “today, we have pre-cooled chasis that eliminated the need for airconditioners.” (Read separate box)

The Auditorium

The visualisation that an institution of this scale requires a venue for large gatherings for lectures, presentations, panel discussions and cultural activities led to creating an exclusive auditorium building. The brief from ISB management for this venue was to design a “state of the art” facility with all of the same collaboration and distance learning features as the classrooms and was also to be a completely wireless environment. Plus, a high quality audio and excellent speech reinforcement and intelligibility as an underlying feature. Handling the audio job upfront are Tannoy VQ speakers paired with Crown amplification and BiAmp audio processing through a Flex system. This system was calibrated to provide high quality speech and programme content to every seat in the auditorium with less than 1.5dB variation between any two

Streaming is provided from Wow Ripple systems which can also provide full lecture capture as well via the installed and portable camera locations. Mixed audio and video signals can be sent via switcher/router to the Ripple for live or delayed streaming. Video conferencing has been provided as a fixed system in the auditorium, and also via switching/ routing with access to any camera or computer source either through fixed or portable channel providing a very flexible system.

Lighting the Auditorium

A complete microphone array including wireless lavalier, handheld and fixed microphones has been provided to meet all day-to-day requirements and also easy interfacing of hire equipment for bigger cultural events. According to the T2 executive who executed the acoustics, the auditorium speech intelligibility has been designed in conjunction with electro acoustic systems to allow the room to function at full efficiency weather fully or partially occupied.

Computer controlled Moving Head Wash and Profile Lighting has been mounted in the ceiling and is used to call up pre-set lighting states for any of the varied uses of the facility. It can also be custom set up for specific requirement. Martin Mac Aura and MAC 350 Entour have been roped in along with an Avolite Titan Mobile Control Desk. “The moving head lighting was selected to allow for the quick change overs in the auditorium between function types,” says Kelvin. “The system is simpler to set up and use than traditional stage lighting systems due to the presets,” he explains. “It requires less maintenance and access which is a common problem in auditoriums due to the ceiling heights.”

The AV system here features a full HD projection where a 9600 ANSI Lumens Christie HD Projection system has been interfaced with a Wow Pro Veos System for computer connectivity, and a full vision mixing system from a Sony-BRCZ700 ceiling mounted PTZ camera which are also used for Video Conferencing as well as local camera inputs. A 298-inch Da-lite screen has been integrated to project the content. The system has also been provided with full video fold back via LCD displays to allow presenters to see the content of the screens behind on the spot. It also allows for viewing far end and near end views when used for video conferencing.

The campus has been provided with a full Digital Signage System for internal communication, and background music has been provided in Public Areas such as the On-Site Hotel, Atrium etc. There are a range of additional meeting and conference rooms throughout the campus with LED Displays and Wow Mini Veos for connectivity. A high-tech Boardroom is located in the administration building and fitted with HD video Conferencing. Taking it to the next level “We are a kind of one-school-twocampuses syndrome,” continues the ISB Director. “We are looking at how to get our learning to students across the two campuses in an environment that integrates world’s best learning practices. We are looking at both the campuses having similar, if not the same, experience, and also take it to the next level.” The next level, according to him, is the deployment of technology for what they call ‘beyond-the classroom-activity.’

That’s just one part,” says DNV Kumara Guru, Director-External Relations, at ISB (Mohali). “While we constantly endeavour to expand our faculty, what becomes more important is the mode and methodology of programme delivery.”

ISB Mohali has a number of student clubs who invite faculties from around the world for sharing their expertise. While some come here personally, some would participate remotely- their lectures and interactive sessions take place through the technology medium created for the purpose. More, the clubs also often invite industry captains and management gurus to deliver lectures and share their acumen. If these programmes are happening on one campus, the technology medium created on the campus makes it possible to involve the other campus also in the programme live, to give the same experience as the one having it physically. A tertiary aspect of the technology in place at ISB Mohali, according to the ISB Director, is to sophisticate the recruitment processes. While enterprises are known to undertake campus recruitments, they cannot do it multiple rounds on the same campus for various reasons. More, that a campus will have

around 700 students to choose from, it is difficult to filter out the numbers, and select the final bunch of recruits on a single day. For, a lot of pre-processing and clearing of subsequent levels come into place requiring significant amount of time before the final recruitment is done. “This is one more area where our technology comes into play. Students are screened through via our technology medium before they meet the final recruiter.” Having come thus far, have there been any areas of compromise- was the obvious question. “Instead of starting the campus right up as an individually advanced set-up, we would have liked running classes from both the campuses simultaneously like a telepresence scenario. This we haven’t done,” admits the ISB Director. “However, the decision in this direction has been taken and we will have it implemented in our second phase of deployment.”

Looking into the future… “We would want to do a lot more technology-assisted learning. Now, we are one-to-one or one-to-few in a classroom, and few more remotely in another classroom. What should ideally happen is one-to-many,” declares Kumara Guru. “Faculty could sit anywhere, and students could sit either in Mohali, in Hyderabad, or in their chosen place anywhere, and log-in into the programme/session.

Practising Green Technology in Teaching For Ayushman Sinha, Assistant DirectorInformation Technology, at ISB Mohali, the requirement of collaboration and technology deployment envisioned ISB Mohali is largely different from what it was when ISB Hyderabad was envisaged. “If I can recall the concept of virtual presence that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi is using to get his message across, that’s more or less what we are trying to leverage,” Sinha says,

trying to summarize the ideology at ISB. “Virtual presence for physical experience and benefit!” While virtual presence may be the order of any technology sophistication, an important part of the message from ISB is green AV initiative. While the entire AV set-up is the most sophisticated, the systems; their installation and operational mechanisms are eco-

According to Sinha, the effort was to adopt eco-


friendly means for as many interactions as possible. “In the current eco-sensitive world, people take the ‘e-way’ to do things virtually. People collaborate with one another,” he says. “That’s what we are trying to do too.” An astute IT honcho that he is, Sinha does admit that ten years down the line, the technology used at ISB Mohali may be obsolete. “That’s a constant endeavour,” he asserts.” Being an IT person-in-charge, his challenge was not implementing the technology, but making the faculty take it. Most of the faculty members, having been decades into their conventional methodologies were seemed uncomfortable to use the tools. “Making

them realize the need and use the technology was a big task,” he admits. There have been briefing sessions to the faculty on how the content delivery via wireless mode works and to use it to optimum experience. “Gladly for us, we succeeded, albeit gradually. Pleasantly for us, most foreign faculty got so much impressed with the processes here that they wanted to do the same at their home campuses too.” Sinha goes on to assert that the entire campus being on wireless / IP mode, technology interfacing human communication is taken to a new high; a new benchmark. It’s actually experiencing technology even as people learn and interact.

A VP-730 Kramer Switcher became the hub for all the VGA signal route and provided the output to the 4 inputs in the Board Room (i.e. Projector, 2 plasmas and 1 VC). Lighting control duties is handled by Crestron Control systems. V-TECH had incorporated the Crestron control programme onto an Apple iPad for mobile use. The configuration includes the Crestron DIN-AP2 2-series control processor integrated with a Crestron DIN 8SW8 light control and a Crestron DIN-DIMFLV4 channel lighting control module that supports dimming of 4 wire 0-10 volt fluorescent dimming ballasts. A wall mounted Crestron CNX-B12 keypad is also installed next to the

conference room door for easy control. All the equipment were well organized in wooden equipment racks. Smart and excellent wiring and cabling had been done on rack end by the V-TECH Project Team. Apart from the Board Room V-TECH also provided NEC NP-M230X projectors mounted on a ceiling fixed kit with high gain Remaco motorised screens for basic presentation along with a Polycom Audio Conferencing Units for Audio Calling for the 22 various rooms. Since its completion the AV infrastructure has been in use almost everyday. The installation provided Tata Capital a platform for discussion and business with their Indian and foreign clients in an advanced technology Board Room for development of their new upcoming investment projects and continuity of satisfying the financial needs of the customers. Screen Technology In this issue we take a look at the developments from screen technology manufacturers. We thank Da-Lite and Stewart Filmscreen for their input. In the face of display technologies such as LCD, LED, OLED, AMOLED and Plasma what are the competitive advantages that screen technologies offer? Da-Lite: The advantage of twopiece projection over any of these technologies is image size. Too often, a flat panel display is specified in a conference room when a larger display is needed. Once the depth of the room gets to be 15 feet or larger, an 80” flat panel display becomes much too small to see detail and read text. Stewart: Scale and product life cycle durability for starters. Projector and screen are the obvious choice for any image over 100” diagonal. Two piece systems still offer a good value when compared to the advances in flat panel displays. The recently concluded CES

show saw flat panel manufacturers offering 110” diagonal flat panel solutions but they are not yet ready for the mainstream buying public when considering cost and practicality. You can’t roll up a flat panel for a multipurpose room. You may be challenged to even get the panel into the room. A screen and projector can serve many, many years and a projector’s mode of failure, usually a lamp, is a digestible expense. One thing which may interest your readers is how high end projection screens do offer quite a bit of technology built right into the surface of the screen. For instance, we build our screen material from scratch and can offer highly uniform projection surfaces with the optical characteristics required for just about any particular viewing environment.

Screen technologies have evolved over time. In relation to your brand/ solutions, what are some of the more critical advancements that have been introduced? Da-Lite: Da-Lite has introduced several new advancements recently. Slim-Tab design and Smooth Roll Technology for our tab-tensioned screens to ensure the screen is flat upon first use and for the life of the product. The Tensioned Conference Electrol, which integrates a video conferencing camera shelf that is concealed in the ceiling when not in use. The IDEA Screen rigid front projection screen that doubles as a marker board. The IDEA Interactive Cart which includes a rigid rear projection surface that is also a writeable marker board, eliminating shadows. HD Progressive screen surfaces designed for use with 1080p and 4K or Ultra HD projection.


Stewart: Stewart Filmscreen sustains an effort of continuous improvement of our products, processes and service experience. There have been many advances throughout the history of Stewart Filmscreen in which we take pride, but to choose a very critical area, I would have to say our screen material. Constant improvements made with the formulation of our projection materials have resulted in materials that meet and exceed today’s world of hi tech imagery. Our screens have been formulated to offer superior performance when it comes to ultra hi resolution imagery, edge to edge uniformity, contrast enhanced fabrics with logical metrics and minimal artefacts, preservation of polarized projection for 3D, and edge blending excellence, to name a few characteristics. Our commitment to optimization drives the technology behind our screens meeting and exceeding today’s demanding requirements, providing the best image fidelity possible. Touch-screen technologies have seen great take-up in various environments with LCDs leading the pack - how do you see this affecting screen technology? Do you feel that projection technology combined with screens and offering IR would be able to compete in this segment? Da-Lite: Applications requiring a touchscreen are typically smaller in image size than most projection applications, so we do not see this affecting screen technology to a large degree. To address interactivity with regards to projection, Da-Lite has introduced rigid screen products that can be used in conjunction with a stylus to make the screen interactive. The IDEA Screen is a rigid front projection screen that can be combined with an interactive projector or a projector mount with built-in interactivity. The IDEA Interactive Cart includes a rigid rear projection surface, eliminating any shadows on the surface. The interactivity is built into the cart and will work with most ultra short throw projectors. Stewart: Stewart offers a very deep product offering in rear projection surfaces. We do not sell turn-Key touch

screens, but we sell many screens to companies who use optical touch screen framing, and projected capacitance type touch functionality, large scale tables and screen walls. Stewart is a screen company and integrated touch screens are a bit of a stray from our core, and would compete with some of our existing channels in the commercial/ corporate markets. For Stewart, the touch screen market is a collaborative environment with partnered companies.

Mystik is ideal as a storefront application, as well as in other retail and public venues when a 2-piece projection solution is desired. The Sabre, is a fixed frame front projection screen focusing on aesthetics with custom finishes available upon request. Colour matched frame and screen material options provide a “zero edge” appearance for those applications requiring an architectural approach to audio visual design. SI Asia felt that it would be apt to have an article about sound considerations for a mosque installation as there are different aspects that need to be taken into consideration when it comes to sound reinforcement for a mosque.

He has completed several mosques projects in Singapore and Malaysia, with the latest being Masjid Negara in Kuala Lumpur. SIA: How does a mosque sound installation differ from other types of installation?

whether the people are standing or sitting more often, and would have to tune accordingly. SIA: What would be some of the key challenges in relation to a sound installation in a mosque? Fadzil: Some of the key challenges of a sound installation in a mosque: • With many sources of sound in the mosque, the challenge is to make it seem that the sound is coming from a single source, the Imam (The preacher). • The Mosque’s overall structure is highly reverberant and thus is a great acoustical challenge. • Time delay, referring to the phenomenon that occurs when sound travels from different sources. • Clearer speech intelligibility.

Fadzil: When planning an installation for a Mosque, the first thing designers must take into account is the high priority on clear speech intelligibility in a challenging structural environment. A Mosque’s structure differs from other houses of worship as it follows an open concept, with many windows and open air places. The interior of the Mosque usually has hard walls with many pillars, and carpets that line the floors from end to end. Top that off with a large dome that is present and you will have a very reverberant venue that is capable of trimming the mid-low frequency, which results in drastically reducing the speech intelligibility. At the same time, speakers are usually hidden and this results to a low performance as the speakers are not optimally placed. In addition, the designer would have to consider the different positions of people attending prayers as there is a difference in standing and sitting. Thus the designer would have to take into consideration

• With designers preferring the speakers to be hidden, it is another challenge to find the best possible position for the speaker, without it being seen. • The best possible microphone for the Imam to use, which will increase unwanted sound rejection. • During the process of equalization, the prostration of the Imam is not taken into account, which results in a humming noise. This goes to show that there is poor equalization in Mosques. • A Mezzanine floor would be another acoustic challenge as the main speakers must be aimed at the main hall, while the Mezzanine speakers should only serve the Mezzanine area. However this is not the case in many Mosques.


SIA: From our understanding, for Prayer Calls it is generally broadcast over a system to enable followers to hear the call - this would require for a system that enables the call to reach out far and wide - are there any specific audio specifications that mosques follow for the prayer call?

SIA: Which areas would require sound reinforcement in a mosque (Prayer call / Preaching, other areas?) Fadzil: Main priority for sound reinforcement is inside the main prayer hall.

Fadzil: Generally in Singapore, new mosques are not allowed to broadcast/ throw the prayer call, due to the closed up environment. However with new audio transport technology, such as Dante, we are able to transport the sound up to 2km, over a Fibre Cable.

SIA: Do you see any trends related to sound reinforcement in mosque recently, within the region? Are mosques paying more attention to sound reinforcement? Fadzil: It has been seen in other countries that the national or state mosques are normally equipped with higher end sound systems for better speech reinforcement and coverage. However, generally they are not adopting sound as fast as the other houses of worship. A good example of this would be churches who take sound reinforcement seriously due to the use of music during worship.

Hotel Indonesia Kempinski upgrades its Presidential Suite AMX system offers efficient and user-friendly operations for guests in the Suite PT Albeta also designed and implemented audio and lighting systems for this suite. Audio ambiance enhancement and distribution in the entire suite is handled by an AMX DAS MI-Series 4. This device functions as a 4 zone audio switcher and is engineered for future technologies so that upgrading to LCD keypads, and adding a tuner module or network interface card can be easily accommodated. Speaker duties in the Suite are handled by ElectroVoice EVID 4.2 compact full range loudspeakers. A Tascam CD player is also installed in the Suite together with a music server. The Suite's lighting system is backed by electronic dimmers from Philips Dynalite.

Throughout the world, Kempinski is a hotel brand that is recognised for its opulence, superior services and ultimate hospitality. luxurious presidential suite is not only the most expensive one in the entire nation, but also the only one equipped with complete amenities suitable for dignitaries from all over the world. This Presidential Suite is equipped with a wide variety of audio, visual, as well as lighting systems; each with its own controller. PT Albeta not only installed these systems, but also was responsible for the integration of these systems, thus allowing for the most efficient and userfriendly operation for guests in this Suite.

Solution

PT Albeta opted for an integration system powered by AMX. The heart of the system is the AMX processor NI-2100. Users receive feedback and give commands to the control system via a number of control system options within the Suite. KSL Properties Sdn Bhd is a property investment company, fully owned by KSL Holdings Berhad. It focuses mainly on township projects, which constitutes commercial buildings, gated residences, high-rise condominiums and shopping malls. The Telstra Experience Centre Australia’s largest Christie MicroTiles installation ‘Wow’ was the single word used by Shane Budak, Telstra Experience Centre (TEC) operations manager, to describe the 260 Christie MicroTiles installed in the Experience Labs in the Telstra Experience Centre (TEC) in Melbourne. Built at a cost of some $13 million, the TEC in Melbourne covers a total area of 3.055 square meters – double that of Telstra's TEC in Sydney – and was constructed over a 190 day period using more than 40 kilometres of cabling and 897 data points. Opened in July 2011, the TEC provides the opportunity for business and enterprise customers to interact with Telstra's health and education applications, home, entertainment and business solutions,


and discover the many ways that Telstra' products are used to make their lives simpler and easier. Telstra has split the TEC into four main zone. Each zone covers an element of Telstra's operations, including experience zones that allow the telecommunications company to demonstrate the latest technology to consumers and businesses and collaboration zones that allow customers and business to get hands-on with Telstra's products and services. The Experience Labs house Australia’s first Christie MicroTiles video wall. The labs are three dedicated rooms that support tailored and interactive demonstrations of Telstra products and solutions using state-of-the-art audio and video technology. The walls between the three labs can be opened up to form a large, multi-functional space. And, using a motorized track system, each lab’s video wall can come together to form a single, 20-metre-wide, digital media wall. From an engineering perspective, achieving this aspect came fraught with many challenges. For one, the building where the TEC was located was a very old building and the floor where the Experience Labs was located was uneven. According to Peter Wood, TEC's technical manager, Telstra wanted a multi-functional space with separate walls and when the walls between the two labs were opened, the video walls in these two labs can also move to merge with the wall in the middle to form a huge video wall, “This would only be possible if the video walls are placed on a motorized track systems.” “The sheer size of each wall, which weighs about 1.5 tonnes, definitely augmented the challenge we had. We needed to have the Christie MicroTiles installed with millimetre accuracy and the only available option was to re-level by adding a new layer of concrete. After the floor has been levelled and re-cemented, we had to lay down the tram tracks. The whole system is based on wheels with a hydraulic arm pushing the two walls at the sides towards the middle wall. So two walls can slide together to form a single video wall. After the video walls

dock together, they have to be pixel perfect, which is harder to achieve than leaving a one millimetre gap. Being able to achieve that was a big challenge, which we were able to overcome,” explains Chris Gauci, technical director of Corporate Initiatives, who supervised the Christie MicroTiles installation. The high-resolution of the Christie MicroTiles system meant the team was working with 30+ million pixels on each array. Only a powerful Christie Spyder

X20 image processor could manage that number of pixels. Corporate Initiatives used three Christie Spyder X20s — one for each array — for blending, windowing, transitions, mixing and scaling of all the source formats. With everything housed in one chassis, the Christie Spyder X20 reduces the wires, boxes and rack space traditionally needed, making the processor easy to install and use.

“For us, it was the first time we were using Christie MicroTiles and we needed a lot of guidance and technical support. It was fantastic dealing with both Christie and VR Solutions (now known as Christie Australia). Corporate Initiatives’ experience with the Christie MicroTiles has been excellent. The whole installation went off almost without a hitch,” says Gauci. “TEC is built so that when Telstra’s customers come in, we can show them the Telstra experience. Because the room can be opened up, if you have people seated at the back of the room, you need them to be able to see what’s on the screen. A lot of the time, we have PowerPoint presentations with wording that is quite small, so you need to make sure everything that’s on the screen is crystal clear. The images displayed on the Christie MicroTiles are perfect. When I first walked into the room, my experience was amazing — the clarity, the quality and the sharpness of the images. They are crystal clear and simply fantastic,” explains Budak. “Clarity from the video wall was our foremost consideration when we were building the Centre. I have been running the TEC for many years and we used to have the large screens and a problem with colour definition. If the colours vary

slightly, it’s not that bad. But on a larger scale, it becomes very noticeable. For example, you would have a presentation and the background was all white and you could see the difference between one screen and the other. With the Christie MicroTiles, such occurrences are very rare. The images and colour ratios are perfect and we haven’t had any problems with them for over a year,” Budak continues. Concurring, Wood remarks, “we love the Christie MicroTiles because they are bright, vibrant and offer clear images. Quite a lot of people have walked in and go ‘Wow’. The names of these three rooms are the Experience Labs but many people refer to it as the ‘MicroTiles room’. Telstra wants to be known as a cutting-edge technology company with state-of-the-art facilities … and by using such advanced products [as] the Christie MicroTiles, we can achieve that. Christie MicroTiles helped to add [to] the prestige of the TEC.” According to Budak, Christie MicroTiles have helped immensely in fulfilling everything they wanted to do with the company and what they wanted to do in this room. “The best thing about the Christie MicroTiles is their inherent versatility. If one Christie MicroTile malfunctions or breaks down, the

presentation or video can be moved slightly to the right or left side of the video wall. This would not be viable on large, 50-inch screens.“ Wood adds, “There is no comparison to the other audiovisual display systems that we’ve used before. The quality, reliability, clarity, brightness that Christie MicroTiles offer are unsurpassed. Reliving the Majesty of the Royal Palace at Malay Heritage Center Broadcast Professional integrates the multimedia experience at the Centre The Malay Heritage Centre (MHC) located at the Istana Kampong Gelam officially re-opened on 1 September 2012. The re-opening of this historic and iconic building was graced by Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong and Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, the former Minister for Information Communications and the Arts and Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs. For visitors, history came alive in MHC’s permanent galleries through the array of interactive and multimedia exhibits featuring audio-visual systems by Broadcast Professional. Believed to be designed by George Coleman, the 169 year-old Neo-Palladian style building is the former istana, a palace for the Sultanate of Singapore in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building was commissioned by the second Sultan – Sultan Ali Iskandar Shah, son of Sultan Hussein Shah. The original Istana Kampong Gelam built for Sultan Hussein was constructed in accordance to traditional Malay architectural style. Today, the new Malay Heritage Centre’s permanent galleries are laid out in

honour of the layout of the original traditional timber palace raised on stilts. The galleries begin on the upper level called the panggung which serves as the main living and sleeping quarters of the house and end on the ground level or kolong (traditionally, open spaces between the stilts) which is typically used as storage, work or service areas, or even as a children’s play area. There are a total of six permanent galleries spread over two levels of the Istana covering over 1,050 square metres. The upper-level galleries are curated based on the theme of Dagang, which means ‘trade’ and ‘journey’, while the lower-floor galleries are curated based on the theme of Budaya meaning ‘culture’. The permanent galleries house 337 artefacts, of which 289 are shown for the first time. The artefacts support the exhibition’s focus on Kampong Gelam’s historical significance as a trading site prior to Raffles’ arrival in 1819 and as a thriving port town in parallel with the developments at the Singapore River during the colonial period. The exhibition content also serves as

evidence of the urban and cosmopolitan nature of Singapore Malay society. Most importantly, the new permanent galleries are enlivened with multimedia and interactive exhibits which engage visitors and enhance the musem-going experience. According to John Paul Tan, Project Manager at Broadcast Professional Pte Ltd, who was involved in the project from the start: “We represented the heritage center’s interests making sure that the approach, the systems’ look and feel, and the integration all came together as planned.” “For the past 10 years, visitors expressed interest in having a more interactive museum experience. There was a need for change and the Malay Heritage Center felt that it was timely to implement such changes, scheduling it to be completed in time for Hari Raya (2012),” he explains. Broadcast Professional was appointed for the installation of all hardware while M’GO Films was appointed for


the design of the multimedia content. For the project, Broadcast Professional provided an audio-visual turnkey solution which included the supply and installation of Panasonic projectors for both tabletop and wall projections as well as Samsung Touchscreens which were employed as interfaces for interactive 3D walk throughs of various residences in Kampong Gelam at the turn of the 20th century. EAW speakers were selected to create immersive audio environments to enhance the viewing experience throughout the museum. The overall master control of this interactive solution is channelled through a Crestron touch panel interface. John further added, “We are proud to be tasked with ensuring the incorporation of multimedia technology and interactive elements into the galleries, which we hope will provide a more engaging experience for visitors.”

In particular, the last section of the Kehidupan galleries titled “Coffee-shop Talk” is uniquely set up as a multimedia simulation of a coffee shop with tables covered with newspaper headlines from different periods. Primarily an immersive audio experience, historical footage of the transition from traditional kampung life to modern flats is played back as though one is watching the world pass by while sitting in a coffee-shop. At each table, visitors will be able to eavesdrop on various conversations focusing on the concerns and issues of the day as well as key historical events experienced by the local Malay community. The project, which commenced in early November 2011, went through three basic phases – cabling, hardware installation and multimedia content creation. John shares, “As it was an old and conserved building, running cables

at the designated points were quite a challenge. Overall, being involved in this project gave us a good insight to what the Malay community is really looking for to be truly proud of their culture and heritage.” Based on feedback received during the opening month, the interactive and multimedia exhibits were a hit. One visitor remarked that she enjoyed how technology has been employed in exhibits such as virtual book interfaces where one could turn the pages of and peek into the content of book artefacts on display. PT Smart Integrator Solution is an Indonesian based specialist in Audio-Visual, Automation, Security and Integration services. The company designs and implements solutions that seamlessly integrate the latest technologies into a wide range of environments such as corporate, retail, hotel, leisure and residential developments. Here we feature a few of their recent projects.

Astra International Board Room (Jakarta)

The board room features lighting that is shaped in the form of a boat. The client's requirement was that the lights be turned on/off in sequence rather than being turned on/off all at once. In order to do this, PT Smart Integrator Solution programmed the lights with the Helvar lighting system which was then integrated with the Crestron control system. The Helvar lighting system plays a role in ensuring the light can be turned on/off in sequence while Crestron plays a role in integrating the major scenario mode ensuring that all AV + lighting system are turned on /off according to their respective preset mode.


Risjedson Groups' Menara Batavia office (Jakarta)

The project involved supply and installation of audio, visual and control systems for the Board room, Lounge room and Meeting room of Risjedson Groups' Menara Batavia office. PT Smart Integrator Solution installed a Biamp Nexia Audio Conferencing system for sound distribution control to the three rooms. This enables the sound to be partitioned as 3 independent source or be played as a single source. Wireless EV PC satellite 10 microphones supported by Bohlender speakers and Grabbener sub-woofers are used for sound reinforcement purposes. Lighting is controlled via a Helvar lighting system. On the visual front JK screens are installed with projection from InFocus projectors. A stylish Crestron TPS6x touch screen controls all the different elements that are configured within a Crestron CP2E control system.

The project features one main hall which can be partitioned into four different rooms as well as another 20 smaller standard meeting rooms. PT Smart Integrator Solution was appointed to supply and install the audio, video and video-conferencing systems for the rooms. Solutions installed for the main hall included a Crestron Processor AV2 to integrate the multiple projectors, screens, video-conferencing systems and audio. An iPAD embedded with Crestron software was provided to control the AV equipment within each room. Video matrix switching is handled by a PTN MRG 32x8 unit. The room also featured

One of the challenges faced by PT Smart Integrator was the distance between some of the rooms that resulted in loss of video signal. In order to resolve the lost signal issue, the company linked the video signals via twisted pair through a PTN electronics TP200Pro transmitter and receiver with a built-in signal booster. This resolved their video signal loss issue. The 20 standard rooms feature a Crestron MPC-M5 as the standard controller for basic AV system in the rooms.

Martin Audio in Award-winning installation at Sydney Railway Terminus Omniline® conquers high reverberation issues at the Terminus A Martin Audio OmniLine® system has been specified and installed at Central Railway Station in Sydney, the largest in Australia, to conquer a speech intelligibility problem that has persisted for years. The Country Trains Concourse, measuring 110m x 60m x 10m, and with a challenging RT60 time of 5.5 seconds in the mid-band, has long defied attempts to get intelligible announcements heard by commuters. Over the years many brands have successively tried and failed to tame the inherent reverberation caused by a combination of terrazzo floors, sandstone and plate glass walls and a high arched steel roof. Last year Glenn Leembruggen, principal of Acoustic Directions, became the latest specialist to do battle with the acoustically hostile environment.

duly specified 120 steered elements — supplied by TAG, Martin Audio’s Australian distributors. Modular and scalable, this particular OmniLine installation used a special version of the Martin Audio Display software (operating under an FIR filtering regime that addressed every element in the array with its own processed channel). The intelligent software enabled the array to be configured to deliver sound precisely over the venue’s vertical profile without spillage. Furthermore, elimination of highfrequency side-lobes gives OmniLine an advantage over conventional DSP steered columns making it suitable for high quality speech and music reproduction even in reverberant spaces such as railway station concourses. Thus Acoustic Directions were able to simultaneously optimise the direct field over the listening area, keep the sound off reflective rear walls, and minimise reverberant sound power. The result is remarkably high intelligibility throughout the concourse, even at rush hour, when as many as 3,000 passengers are adding to the cacophony of noise resonating around this vast cavern.

Since acoustic treatment of the inside of the roof was ruled out as being financially untenable, two members of the Acoustic Directions team, David Connor and David Gilfillan, decided to trial several software-driven systems, and investigate different steerable line array solutions.

With the amps situated as much as 200m away from the speakers, a 100 Volt system was required, and Acoustic Directions worked with Harbuch Electronics to develop a 100V loudspeaker transformer that was ultraflat and with only 10 degrees of phase shift at 20kHz. The FIR filters that beam control the array are implemented in Nion processors with the loudspeakers being driven by 8-channel 2.4kW amplifiers (to provide 120 amp channels).

They ultimately concluded that a Martin Audio OmniLine system, with DSP processing, would produce the best quality and best speech clarity. They

The installation also picked up a coveted Rutledge AV Industry Award (an AVIA) with the judges commending Acoustic Directions’ meticulous implementation of the modelling, installation and commissioning of the system. As a result, for the first time not only can amplified speech be easily understood in any part of the concourse, but music and pre-recorded messages sound natural and clear — and roaming handheld wireless microphones can function without fear of feedback. Bread of Life Christian Church improves communication with digital signage system

CAYIN’s digital signage players empower 26 LCD screens in Bread of Life Christian Church in Shilin, Taiwan Using audio visual equipment in a church is not an entirely new thing. The unique part of this project is the perfect integration with digital signage and other existing AV, broadcast equipment. The administrator is able to switch between different signals immediately and show coherent content on all screens keeping pace with the flow of the activities. For example, LCD screens can show the handout and videos during a sermon. Contents can also be switched between lyrics and the live performance of the choir on the stage when songs are sung.

Bread of Life Christian Church in Shilin was founded in 1995. After 10 years of endeavour, the church has grown from 100 members to nearly 5000. Every year, about 500 people are baptised here and nearly 2,000 people are engaged in all kinds of volunteer activities every week. To better accommodate the growing congregation the church moved to a new building in 2012. The new building is able to accommodate around 1000 people for all kinds of activities, such as Sunday worship services, weddings, funerals and training camps. The church also decided to utilise the latest in audio visual technology so as to be able to effectively communicate messages to the congregation inside the church as well as to reach out to audiences outside the church building. This resulted in the church installing an array of LCD displays connected to two units of CAYIN SMP-WEB4, web-based digital signage players. A prominent 65” LCD display is hung above the main entrance towards the fellowship hall. The large fellowship hall itself features a total of 16 units of a mix

of 55” and 65” LCD screens. The screens in the hall enables the congregation to follow and be engaged with the proceedings at the pulpit, even if their line of sight is blocked. The church even broadcasts real-time services from the pulpit to a 3x3 TV wall that has been installed in the window facing the outside of the church. Composed of 9 units of 42” LCD displays people passing by the church can see the live services. The TV wall helps the church transmit messages to a wider audience in the community. All contents are also well prepared. The church has designed a beautiful layout template using the CAYIN Skin editor content creation programme to including videos, image slide shows, tickers, date and time. All screens can promote upcoming events, training camps, seminars, announcements, and pictures of past events in a dynamic way. Using digital signage system is the perfect method for the church to communicate with members. It also creates a contemporary image to attract and engage young people.

All live activities are broadcast through CAYIN’s digital signage player. The SMP-WEB4 is equipped with the AV-in function, that enables it to receive signals from digital cameras at the stage and transmit real-time full-screen video to all landscape and portrait displays. CAYIN’s digital signage solution has helped the church communicate messages in a simpler way via immediate and remote management of information. For many years, it was known as the New Plymouth Assembly of God church; however, the church was re-branded as citywestchurch in 2006. It was at around this time that Daniel Evans of TSH Audio and Video – a company that has worked with the venue for many years assisting with conferences and special events – held a meeting with the church to develop a 10-year plan for the staged upgrade of the main auditorium. The requirement was to be able to stage multimedia events ranging from regular Sunday church services to community group or youth events, and school or touring productions, none of which were readily achievable with the basic early-80s sound system the church had at the time. The church seats 675 people, but has a capacity of up to 1000 if additional seats are installed. Chris Hobby, Music and Creative Arts Pastor for citywestchurch comments: “The venue has many sound challenges. It is a large 675-seat Lockwood auditorium with a sloping floor and open ceiling space with wooden beams and walls.” The brief was to install a new FOH speaker system to provide even, full-

range sound coverage throughout the main auditorium. Good clarity of speech was the priority for this system, but it also had to be capable of reproducing pre-recorded and live music performances from a full band, including vocalists and a mic'ed acoustic drum kit. A flown system was the church's preference, for performance/coverage reasons and also for sight lines. Daniel Evans contacted Now Sound for design support, and after consultation with the client, a Left-Right array system was modelled, consisting of three Mid/High boxes flown each side and one subwoofer per side. Being able to introduce the church to the Now Sound sales team made it easy to work together to get the best outcome for the customer. Evans comments, “After tests, it became apparent that the QSC system was better suited for this type of application, and had the advantage of costing a bit less as well.” In the final system, six QSC KLA12 units with array frames were used for the mid-range/ high-frequency boxes, and two KL181s were used as the subwoofers. Evans continues, “Chris and Steve quickly noticed the more even coverage that the QSC boxes gave us throughout the room, particularly in the high frequencies. And this was straight out

Dr Joseph Kramer Kramer Electronics celebrates it 32nd anniversary this year. The company was founded by Dr Joseph Kramer, who started it with a clear vision, to enter the video era and change the world of Pro AV. With over 1000 innovative products, millions of Kramer Electronics products in use worldwide and offices all over the world and still growing, SIA meets Dr Joseph Kramer to learn about the present and the future for Kramer Electronics. SIA: Congratulations on winning the AV System Product of the Year Award for the Step-In system. What do such awards mean to Kramer, and personally to you? Dr Kramer: From a company perspective, naturally Kramer Electronics is proud and happy at winning the AV Systems Product of the Year Award. We invest so much in planning new products, and there is more than just money in that statement. We put our heart and soul in every project, therefore we are very pleased that the huge effort we put in planning the Step-in product family, paid off eventually. On a more personal level, I am happy for both my staff and myself, that this initiative which started from scratch, brainstorming in my office and trying to come up with a very smart and complicated new product has led to a truly revolutional, multi-possibility and user-friendly product in reality, and moreover, encountered such a success. SIA: Kramer is known to introduce new products faster than most - is this dynamism in response to the industry demand, or passion for giving new direction? Dr Kramer: The initiative to come up with new products in a very short interval usually originates from two sources. One is the strong belief, held by our friends and customers around the world that we can do almost anything. Over the years Kramer has gained trust from our clientèle, who tell us not only one desire but all their desires for products they would like to see on the shelves. Then there are those developments that are born during internal brainstorming sessions for products we think would be successful in the market. It is basically a

mix of the two that helps us introduce about a hundred new products each year. SIA: In 30 years since the inception, what do you think is the most important / impactful product innovation from Kramer? Dr Kramer: There are a number of very important products that I could name, and it is very hard to evaluate the order, but if I have to, I would go with the following: The VS-11 Image Processor in its analogue version, which was then followed by a digital model, the SP-11. The VS-11 was the first product where you could actually compare real-time picture processing, before and after, and get the exact skin-tone; the VP23 – Kramer’s first multi-standard presentation switcher, and the invention of Kramer TOOLS™, our line of smallsize products, featuring many required functions. Another substantial impact on the industry was the implementation of Twisted Pair technology across the board, for both analogue and digital video transmission, replacing expensive coax cables used until then, and of course, the VS-1616D, Kramer’s first digital router, announcing Kramer’s digital era. But the most extraordinary product that we have at the moment is the Digital Step-in system, designed to bring flexibility and versatility to any stateof-the-art boardroom, allowing an easy connection from any source with any major video interface, as well as the ability to take control of the main display. Obviously, winning the 2012 AV Systems Product of the Year Award proves that we are not the only ones to think that!

Dr Kramer: Each invention comes with its own value. The VS-11 for instance, was the first product to enable very accurate colours for video signals, especially in NTSC, the American method for broadcasting. The other products I mentioned were also highly influential, and I know that, because very quickly, exact copies of these products showed up in the stores. This tells me very clearly that we are doing something right. SIA: It’s been roughly over two years since Kramer introduced speakers as specialty products; nothing in line, after that- quite unlike the known Kramer tendency. Why? Dr Kramer: Unfortunately I cannot say much in this area, except that very shortly, we are going to shake the earth in this product group. We are deliberately keeping quiet on this, working very hard on a new project and I can’t say anything further. SIA: After the 2003 acquisition of Sierra Video, Kramer hasn’t made any significant acquisitions - any particular reason or was there no significant company that would bring further dynamism to Kramer’s portfolio of solutions? Dr Kramer: Since the Sierra Video acquisition, we continued to develop our product line together with Sierra Video’s line. We are free to look around for additional opportunities, and we make it a habit to feel the industry pulse all the time. At this point, I cannot say when we will make our next move in this direction. There is always room for speculation though...

SIA: The world of AV is increasingly getting video and touch-screen dominated. Being a primarily video focused enterprise, how do you look at this trend? Dr Kramer: The answer is very simple when it comes to touch-screen technologies; we are heading in the same direction. Our aim is to provide the best user experience solutions to our customers through any means or device and based on the most cutting-edge technologies. Mobile, touch-screen or any other means are just pieces in this puzzle. May I remind you that Kramer was the first company in the ProAV world to have made a strategic decision to open its control product protocol, allowing any knowledgeable developer to write room control applications for any user-interface device supporting bidirectional communication. Our Research and Development engineers are constantly working on new developments, current trends and future inventions. Even now. SIA: What’s your take on HDbaseT? What impact do you think HDbaseT will have on A/V switching? Dr Kramer: It is my belief that HDBaseT is an important technology and a very useful one, and it’s definitely here to stay. It is in the interest of most major manufacturers to support it and help it grow, which is precisely the reason why our R&D teams are developing many new products around our current existing line of high-quality transmitters and receivers with HDBaseT technology. Furthermore, the HDBaseT certification program matches our philosophy to provide installers with tools that ensure interoperability between different HDBaseT products. That is also the reason why Kramer is an active member in the official HDBaseT alliance.

SIA: What impact in particular to Kramer? In what way Kramer would leverage the concept? Dr Kramer: HDBaseT is a complementary product family that we offer in parallel to our existing DGKat renowned technology. HDBaseT is good for Kramer because it makes us in line with the industry, but at the same time, Kramer Electronics is able to offer a unique, inexpensive and reliable solution with the DGKat line of products. As far as HDBaseT is concerned, I can say that we joined the world revolution but for Kramer, these are complementary products. SIA: What according to you is/ are the most impactful “emerging” technology/ technologies in AV? What is Kramer’s role in its evolution? Dr Kramer: The emerging technologies in the AV market for several years now are Compression and IP based systems. From small companies to the biggest manufacturers, e-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y is accommodating to these new trends. Kramer is heading the same direction; we are developing appropriate products and adjusting our current product line in accordance with these emerging technologies. I believe that in the foreseeable future, most AV systems will be using the IP network for transmission, storage and production. SIA: Kramer has been an active contributor to AV education and training globally - which particular geography you feel as the most active/receptive? And which is most challenging? Dr Kramer: The most active geography in promoting AV education and training is undoubtedly the US. We have a large office in the US and we are very active in the local market in promoting training programs and executing seminars and road shows. This year (2012) in particular, I am very pleased with Malissa Dillman’s recent winning of the 2012 InfoComm International Women in AV Award. This market segment is growing very fast. SIA: Where would you want Kramer to be positioned in such a scenario?

InfoComm members. Malissa is the Training and Education Manager at Kramer USA and she is doing a great job in this field. The most challenging situation in AV education and training is what we see in the developed countries where broadcasters are unfortunately still using fully analogue equipment. SIA: What factors you see making it challenging? Dr Kramer: When broadcasters are still using analogue equipment, the change needs to go very deep in the way the local industry is operating. Only following deep investigation can we start exposing those geographies to the beauty of the digital world and the multi possibilities it brings with it. We are talking about a change of concept and this kind of a challenge needs to be supported by governments and major players such as big companies. I believe that training AV professionals on the digital domain in a fully detailed manner in those developed countries can start only after the above process takes place. SIA: Having said and taken many positives, AV is still not an academic stream in most countries/geographiesGiven Kramer’s proactive role in this domain, what is your take on this? Any specific initiative to help improve the situation?

Dr Kramer: You are right in the proactive role Kramer is taking throughout its many years of existence in educating others. We are turning many corners in the world, developing the Kramer Academy and teaching unconditionally in all the countries we are based in, each place with its own level of expertise. Whether in the old analogue world or in the most advanced areas, individually or in shows, our training sessions are everywhere and our aim remains to bring AV professionals forward. SIA: Where do you see the AV world heading in the next, say, five years? Dr Kramer: The AV world is changing rapidly. The future lies in 8K, fully supported and glassless 3D, new crystalbased storage devices, laser-based projectors, very small projectors and so on. We are also witnessing an interesting awakening which we are actually part of as we speak, with the adoption of streaming video, media players and fancy display devices in digital homes.

Dr Kramer: When it comes to 8K, glassless 3D and the technologies that I mentioned, we are going to be there, supporting all these technologies and be part of the future, from today, every day. As far as streaming video products, media players etc., this year (2012) we launched a new line of streaming video products and we are planning to expose more advanced products in the coming ISE show in January 2013. SIA: On a final note what has been your impression of the AV Industry in Asia over the last five years? Dr Kramer: A year ago I visited Thailand, Singapore, and then China for a 10-day tour in which I had the opportunity to meet integrators and professionals from Asia Pacific. I was deeply impressed by the awakening of the region and the high level of professionalism I had seen there. It is my belief that the Asian market has a tremendous potential and that our activity in Asia will be growing. This market is developing very fast, even creating new and unique technologies of its own, as we experienced with DIIVA for instance. Kramer is well prepared for an expansion within the region and we will definitely be part of it. RTI to put focus in Asia

Remote Technologies Inc. (RTI) has been in the remote control business for over 20 years now. Based out of Minnesota,USA, the company has weathered many challenges as well as competitors on its way to becoming an established name in the remote control segment. It had record sales in 2012 despite dour global economic situation over the two previous years. Now, RTI is training its sights on Asia to continue their momentum for the next decade and beyond. SIA caught up recently with John Demskie, President/CEO of RTI and Pete Baker, VP of Sales and Marketing, to get further insight into their plans. RTI started designing remote controls in 1992, and is considered a pioneer of affordable touchscreen controllers, way before Home Theatre became a buzz word. That soon expanded to solutions to control from single room to multirooms, to home theatres to whole house to multi-dwelling units and eventually to the commercial side of the business. “The commercial side of the business was a natural fit for our products,” says John Demskie, President/CEO of RTI Corp. “The housing crash was an impetus for us to put in more effort in the commercial sector. It has different distribution methods and required different sales strategy but we put in the effort to understand the sales chain and the commercial needs. Our involvement in the segment over the past six to seven years has been very rewarding for us.”

RTI's big push into the international market began about five years ago. Thus RTI's declaration that nearly 50 per cent of it’s business comes from international markets is an impressive feat. “We would like to eventually have a ratio of 40 per cent of sales from North America and 60 per cent from international markets,” says John. Currently Europe, South America and Australia-NZ provide the bulk of turnover from international segment. “In fact Australia has done very well for us. We are very strong, and hold one of the top market shares for remote control systems in Australia. Our success across the international market is also due to our excellent partners,” says Pete Baker, VP of Sales and Marketing, RTI. One of the ways RTI intends to achieve its objective of 60 per cent revenue from the international markets is through their intended emphasis in Asia. “Frankly Asia has been our weak spot. But we are currently in the process of changing that with a lot more effort. We are looking at marketing, additional staff and offices that we can open to support the region.” explains Pete. We left Asia to the last as it is a very diversified region which requires a proper strategy with a long term view. We believe that Asia will help us in our growth over the next 10 to 20 years.” RTI though is not a complete stranger to Asia. RTI Taiwan was set up 10 years ago as a support office for RTI HQ.

“The development, industrial design and engineering are all performed or managed directly by RTI at it’s headquarters in the USA. We started off with outputting 100 per cent of RTI product manufacturing in Taiwan but that has changed in the last few years. There is now a mix of manufacturing between Taiwan and China. Taiwan still oversees the tooling and QC processes. Shipping and logistics are also handled out of Taiwan,” says Pete. There are also multiple, established RTI distribution channels in Asia: Taiwan, China, Hong Kong with South-East Asian countries handled by Mojoworx Asia's offices, as well as Australia and New Zealand. John highlights that he is most pleased with how the company has grown at a steady pace. “I am proud of the fact that we have name recognition and are now one of the highest admired brand names in the industry. There has been much turmoil in the industry and our staying power is testament to the quality of our people, product and strategic focus. These, I am confident, will achieve our objectives in Asia as well.”

RTI can also be very proud of the fact that they are the only company to have their programming platform software inducted into the CEDIA Hall of Fame. The RTI Integration Designer programming software was inducted in 2011. “We are very well known for our programming platform. We have continuously focused on upgrading our software platform. Our programming software is unique. It does not require the dealer to write codes, and yet it gives you great power and flexibility to customise the system design and user interfaces. It is seamless, easy and efficient,” elaborates John. RTI’s award winning Integration Designer programming environment is a powerful, easy-to-use, Windows-based software package that allows the entire suite of RTI products to be programmed from any PC. John also highlights that barriers to entry is still very high for control systems. “It is not an easy thing to do. Many have tried to enter the space and have rarely been successful. It is the type of business that with just one small mistake it will cause you to fail. You need to get all your details right and it takes a lot of experience and knowledge. Consumers now have an appetite to integrate cool devices and technology into their (entertainment) system. The need is higher than ever now, for an intuitive interface and automation, to make the user experience enjoyable for the consumer,” says the RTI President. “At the end of the day, we want to simplify things by providing a logical interface that allows anyone to operate the

Recently, RTI further upped the ante with the announcement of their new control platform, APEX. “APEX is revolutionary. It allows dealers to use our current software, and on top of that there is going to be an application wizard builtin that basically allows integrators to auto-build the system very quickly. It will basically generate the programme for them in minutes, after entering the devices used in the system” explains Pete. In essence, amongst other features, the Apex platform supports remote programming and project management. Projects can be stored in the cloud- so anyone in the company can access the most current file from anywhere in the world. Programs then can be remotely downloaded to a customer’s devices including some handheld controllers, keypads, central processors and other RTI devices. RTI has also introduced their Pro Control line which is a separately branded line designed for the entry level. “We spent over two years developing the Pro Control line software. And we maintained our philosophy that our software should quickly automate the programming for you, whilst still allowing you to customise it. In fact we will transition some of the creative and successfully tools we developed for Pro Control Studio into our APEX platform. Of course the scope of capabilities is expanded with RTI,” elucidates Pete. Pro Control line enables RTI's partners expand their products offering and venture into different markets that may not have been possible before (with RTI) such as projects requiring more streamlined programming and an entry level priced control solution.

The recently launched 4x4 and 8x8 HDBase-T matrix switcher

Another new set of solutions RTI launched recently are the 4x4 and 8x8 HDBase-T matrix switchers thus marking RTI's expansion into video distribution. These are a natural compliment to their much earlier introduced Distributed Audio systems. “The audio systems were largely to do with our dealers’ request. They wanted us to add some sub systems that will make their life easier. We had constant query from our dealers as to what would be the best audio distribution system,” explains the RTI CEO. “We felt it would be worth our while if we produced our own distribution system and amps, and from day one it has been a great success. ”We are very excited about our success with our Distributed Audio products and will continue to expand the line. For dealers who want to go with a third party system that option is still open to them, due to the open architecture of all RTI products. With the addition of our matrix switchers we are offering our partners a complete solution.”

Zee Hakimoglu, the latest name in InfoComm ranks of fame. President, CEO and Chairperson of the Board at ClearOne, was recently honoured with the prestigious InfoComm International Women in AV for 2012 Award. Since coming onboard ClearOne roughly a decade ago, Zee has clearly stated her zest for AV excellence. She was named North American Audio Conferencing CEO of the Year by Frost & Sullivan in 2007, and in 2009, under her leadership, ClearOne was named one of America's fastest growing small public companies by Fortune Small Business magazine. SIA caught up with the ever busy ClearOne Chief to know what’s the audio (now video too) enterprise is up to. Excerpts: SIA: Congratulations on your winning the prestigious 2012 InfoComm International Women in AV Award. What does it mean to you, personally? ZEE: I am honoured by the InfoComm Award – as they represent the single, most influential global trade organization representing the audiovisual information, communications industries. The professional AV market is my passion, and it means a great deal to be recognized. SIA: What does it mean to ClearOne? ZEE: The professional AV market has been ClearOne’s foundation, and remains our focus. We continue to look ahead, intercepting the market with new

SIA: Having been a thoroughly audiofocused enterprise all along, ClearOne made the big video foray with the acquisition of VCON in early 2012. What specific benefits have you been able to reap since then? ZEE: The acquisition of VCON will bring us a wealth of knowledge, technology and experience in the growing video conferencing market to complement ClearOne's leadership in audio conferencing. VCON has established a comprehensive portfolio of industryleading HD video-conferencing solutions comprising feature-rich room systems and desktop video applications, as well as enhanced network management and infrastructure solutions. With the acquisition of VCON, ClearOne will offer a complete suite of audio and video conferencing and collaboration solutions. SIA: You also had MagicBox bringing in the digital signage portfolio earlier. How do you describe this late activism? What particular value addition has it brought to ClearOne brand proposition? ZEE: MagicBox is a very small company we purchased last September which makes small scale digital signage solutions. The key with digital signage is delivering the right message to the right audience at the right time- another mode for communication in enterprise. MagicBox provides the digital signage content development, scheduling, management software, and media players. Our MagicBox digital signage solutions are intended for applications used in education, healthcare, houses of worship, hospitality, and corporate communications. With the precipitous price drops for display technology, more businesses can easily and affordably migrate from fixed signage to programmable digital signage. What we have done at ClearOne is to consolidate these technologies such

that we can offer unified multimedia communication options for the enterprise. With ClearOne solutions, you can conference, stream audio and video, and create custom content on common platforms. As an example, we have the building blocks for an enterprise to conference, and when not conferencing, stream a corporate presentation as well as adding an overlay of custom content such as tickers, weather, or business data. The ROI to install a MagicBox digital signage system alone can be greater than continually printing new signage messaging in the enterprise.

SIA: Having brought many ‘firsts’ to industry, what do you think has been ClearOne’s biggest contribution so far, technologically? ZEE: The power of our audio remains our core value; but now, we have innovative, IP-based video streaming and software-based video conferencing solutions that complement our legacy audio solutions. The addition of these technologies extends the reach of our audio products in the Enterprise segment. These streaming, signage and video conferencing products are unique and innovative. SIA: How it has impacted the industry dynamics? ZEE: Despite being a smaller competitor, our future-proof technology means we can disrupt the industry; and, in fact, we maintain a viable position with strong products and solutions that demand attention. SIA: What technology or technologies you believe is/are driving the AV industry today? ZEE: Convergence and Collaboration. As the market rapidly evolves, with AV and IT network convergence on the infrastructure side, and audio, video and data convergence on the applications side, the opportunity for our industry practitioners and manufacturers will continue to grow. It’s convergence all over.


SIA: What technology initiative is driving ClearOne today? How it would impact the industry? ZEE: The core technology driving our solutions are software and IP-based on the video side, and DSP-based on the audio side. ClearOne will continue to design, develop and sell conferencing, collaboration, streaming and digital signage solutions for audio, video and data multimedia communication; offering unprecedented levels of functionality, reliability and scalability. SIA: With a good number of formidable players in the market, how does ClearOne distinguish itself from competition? ZEE: First of all, ClearOne has been in the audio business for a long, long time. We have global brand recognition when it comes to audio conferencing. Now that the overall conferencing and collaboration market has expanded significantly, our core audio strengths extend to satisfy emerging market needs for unified communications endpoints. We can leverage our well-known brand with new solutions in the channel to grow the business. As I mentioned earlier, the Audio Visual business continues to converge with the IT business. There are many big players. But our very strong brand opens doors and opportunities for us and our channel partners, as we introduce new products to customers. So that's very, very valuable. A second advantage that ClearOne has is something that money can't buy, that is a very broad, deep and loyal global channel. We don't retain and grow our channel because we're the biggest guys on the block. We retain and grow our channel because the channel knows if ClearOne introduces a product, it's going to be a solid product, it's going to have A-plus quality and work as advertised. The channel also knows that if they carry a ClearOne product, they are going to make money selling it based on our go-to-market channel strategies. The channel knows if they need help with new products and new technologies‌

that we will be here to support their continued investment in ClearOne. This is how we have retained and grown our channel. So again, we have something money can't buy, that's experience and reputation in the market. That's one of our core strengths. A third strength - hands-free audio is a core and fundamental component for all conferencing and collaboration applications but that hands-free audio is both an art and science. There have been a slew of killer products by some very large companies that tried but failed to compete in the market. We've been able to maintain our supremacy because it's a very difficult technology to master. Our technology keeps us ahead of the potential competitors. With both technology and channel strength, we feel we have a very good springboard to introduce these newer solutions into the market. SIA: Which market segment and geography does the company find challenging, and why? ZEE: The biggest challenge always is doing everything that we need to do while remaining profitable and providing good solutions in tough economic environment. Every region is slightly different but all regions require value and support for their equipment purchases. We deliver that. We're committed to be a strong financial company. While we are certainly a small company, we've managed over the years to retain good earnings. We were recently added to the Russell MicrocapToday, we are in what I call fantasy market of conferencing and collaboration. It is a global phenomenon. SIA: Any focused initiative(s) to expand/consolidate the company position in such areas? Please elaborate‌ ZEE: You've noticed we bought a few small companies we could afford and digest. These were not acquisitions to buy top-line revenue, but to bring new strategic core technologies that we would not be able to develop ourselves with the time and money available to us. It's a real challenge to watch the top and bottom line and have the discipline

We are in a very exciting market and it's easy to go over the top. But if you don't see focus, good execution, good financial management and profitability at the front-end, then you probably won't see it at the back end. It thus requires great discipline in managing your team as well as managing yourself. At this point, we want to help our partners capitalize on our acquisitions by growing revenue. We have what we need to do that. SIA: Where does ClearOne intend to position itself in the global market place? And within what time-frame? ZEE: ClearOne’s original market was quite small, a niche market, identified as installed professional audio conferencing. That market is forecast to be a sub-200 million dollar market in 2014. We continue to command nearly 50 per cent of that market as we've done so for many years. In the past few years, however, through organic route, we extended the reach of our products to personal and tabletop solutions which is a $300 million plus market. Most recently, through strategic technology acquisitions, we entered a $4 billion plus total available market for enterprise audio and video streaming & digital signage. That doesn't imply that we're going to get to 4 billion any time soon, but certainly we've significantly expanded our market revenue potential in these emerging markets.
