FIRST WORDS

Systems Integration Asia June - July 2012

COVER: Qatar National Convention Centre

It’s mid year and the summer holidays are upon those who live in the west. And of course for those who are football (soccer) crazy like me, there is the Euro 2012 to look forward to. These “Happy Days” unfortunately have been tainted by the continuous bleak predictions of the world economy and financial state. But lets hope like in the

OUR TEAM PUBLISHER / EDITORIAL DIRECTOR Thomas Richard Prakasam thomas@spinworkz.com

past we will persevere. In the Asian front, the AV business still seems to be chugging along. The overwhelming increase of visitors to InfoComm China was a bright spark and my interview with the international players at the exhibition does clearly indicate that China as a country is contributing significantly to their AV business. Growth is forecast to slow down to 8.2% for China this year but what is relevant is that it is still growth. Many in the region are also hoping that the other Asian giant, India, will continue its momentum. Our

editor in India, Ram Bhavanashi, says that AV projects are still continuing across the country unabated. In South-east Asia, Myanmar’s tampering with democratic reforms is being seen in a positive light. Businesses from around the world are hoping to tap opportunities in the country and if Myanmar’s leaders stay the course, the AV industry should see potential business in the country. Kudos to some of the AV companies who have already ventured into Myanmar. The South East Asia games that are to be held in Myanmar in 2013 and Myanmar’s turn to Chair the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in 2014 do offer business possibilities. Lets not forget that Indonesia of late has been showing good economic growth as well. A recent report in The Straits Times (A Singapore Newspaper) indicates that Jakarta is ramping up efforts to improve railways, roads, airports and ports in the next 13 years on an estimated budget of USD88 billion. Good news for those in the control room business! On the exhibition front, there is of course InfoComm12 that will be held from June 13 to 15 at Las Vegas. From June 9 for those attending the various seminars and educational tracks. It is by far the largest showing of exhibits for the industry. Over 925 exhibitors with display integrated display, projection, audio, conferencing, lighting and staging, digital signage and communications system solutions. For those in Asia

New App by Bosch makes it easy for specifiers and installers INTERNATIONAL: The Bosch loudspeaker range currently consists of over 70 different products, and is steadily increasing. Not only are there many varied products, but also a large number of different features, making selection of the correct loudspeaker a daunting task. With the introduction of its new LSP Select app, Bosch makes it easy for specifiers and installers to make the right choice for their specific public address applications. As an innovative audio manufacturer, Bosch has a loudspeaker solution for any acoustic specification in a public environment. In order to select the appropriate speaker in each case, the installer has to consider such factors as acoustic performance, type of mounting, environmental and certification issues, as well as the accessories available. To simplify this task, Bosch introduced the Loudspeaker Selection Tool in July 2011, a catalogue in paper-fan form for quick and easy product comparison.

At Prolight + Sound 2012 the Tool was taken one step further with a launch of a free app. The LSP Select app combines all the information contained in the paper fan with the compactness and availability offered by a smartphone. The user interface is designed to be intuitive, taking straightforward customer requirements into account, all without the need for advanced technical knowledge of loudspeaker specifications. Initially available for the iPhone, the LSP Select will be further developed for the iPad, Android smartphones, and Android tablets. The app will be updated each year in line with additions to the Bosch loudspeaker range. It is also conceivable that it will be extended to other public address product lines. For further information and direct link to the AppStore a dedicated microsite is available at www.boschsecurity.com/ lspselect. The app can be downloaded from the AppStore in English.

Woori Investment and Securities is one of Korea’s leading financial investment institutions and has played a significant role in the development of the Korean capital markets over the past 40 years. With subsidiaries across the globe, including London, Hong Kong, New York, Beijing, Singapore, Jakarta and Hanoi,

Woori is expanding its operations and looking to strengthen its core businesses and global network to become Asia’s leading investment institution. The importance of network stability and security in the financial services industry – for the transmission of highly confidential financial data – cannot be overemphasised. The RealPresence Platform offers carrier-grade reliability, security and industry-leading scalability— up to 25,000 concurrent sessions and 75,000 device registrations on up to 64 video servers. Built on open standards, the RealPresence Platform interoperates with the industry’s broadest range of communications applications. This interoperability protects customers’ existing investments by ensuring backwards- and forwardscompatibility with existing as well as new and future communication and collaboration systems. Because of Polycom’s focus on interoperability, the RealPresence Platform transforms islands of employees and fragmented communications systems into a seamless video enterprise which makes enterprise-grade video easily and securely accessible to all authorised personnel whether they’re mobile, remote, or on-site. Woori also looked to Polycom to establish an enterprise video network that would use the least network bandwidth possible. In fact, because of Polycom’s many patented innovations

Woori has enhanced its meeting room experience with Polycom’s highdefinition quality for voice, video and content-sharing combined with easeof-use. This combination has created a new conferencing culture in which realtime video collaboration is considered an important tool across the company to improve meetings, enhance training and development, support product launches, and speed decision making. Woori is currently looking to expand Polycom’s video conferencing solutions to its overseas branches. In addition, Woori is now exploring ways to drive further competitive advantage with Polycom video, including innovative uses of the technology to improve customer service levels by offering private banking services to remote and mobile customers anytime, anywhere. In addition, Polycom video can provide greater product accessibility for customers and support more convenient customer consultation in compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). All financial institutions in Korea are required by the Financial Supervisory Service to follow the guidelines relating to the DDA and obtain appropriate certification. “Financial organisations are increasingly using Polycom’s collaboration solutions to facilitate greater interaction between dispersed teams for faster decision making, increased customer service levels and the ability to bring products to market sooner. We are pleased to be delivering these benefits to Woori through real-time collaboration,” said Dae-Jun Shin, Country Manager of Polycom Korea. www.polycom.asia

AMX launches Enova DXLink Boards, Transmitters and Receivers

DXLink HDMI Receiver

AMX®, ® has launched the Enova® ® DGX G DXLink Twisted Pair Input and Output Boards and DXLink HDMI Transmitters and Receivers. Developed for the Enova DGX Digital Media Switchers and Enova DVX All-In-One Presentation Switchers, DXLink transports Enova’s unified technologies - audio, video, control, Ethernet and power - over a single twisted pair cable. In addition, AMX-exclusive, intelligent-scaling SmartScale® and HDCP problem-solving InstaGate Pro™ technologies are also onboard. As end users increasingly want the “watch anywhere / listen anywhere / control anywhere” capability of all their digital multimedia source content, there’s never been a more applicable solution than Enova DXLink I/O Boards,

k Transmitters and Receivers. DXLink transmits 1080p high definition, HDCP compliant content up to 100 meters (330 feet) to and from the switcher. In addition, content is always perfectly scaled and switched without delays, hassles and limitations traditionally associated with HDCP signals.

up to 100 meters to either switcher, and then that content can be sent another 100 meters to DXLink Receivers located at the display point. This enables up to 200 meters (660 feet) of AV, control, power and Ethernet distribution, covering approximately 90 percent of most AV implementations.

DXLink provides a platform to deliver an integrated solution that can link together Enova DVX Presentation Switchers in individual meeting rooms with Enova DGX Digital Media Switchers used to distribute audio and video building-wide. This allows content such as an all hands meeting or emergency messaging to be distributed within specific rooms or to all displays throughout a facility. DXLink Transmitters enable content to be sent

To ease the installation process even further for AMX dealers and distributors, AMX has also just launched the new Enova DGX Configuration Tool. It’s incredibly handy in helping integrators design a DGX system as well as creating the module layout and related parts list. www.amx.com/enova

The new 4x4 HDMI Matrix Switcher by AV Toolbox

DIS introduces new ready-togo Camera and Microphone Control Package DIS is proud to introduce the CP7851, a new complete camera control package for easy implementation to the DCS6000 Digital Conference System. The package consists of a camera controller, a wireless router and an iPad.

AVT-6544 4x4 HDMI Matrix Switcher

TV One’s AV Toolbox division adds the AVT-6544 4x4 HDMI Matrix Switcher to its product line. The AVT-6544 provides the capability to assign any of the four HDMI inputs to any of the four HDMI outputs and senses when a valid HDMI connection has been made to either the input or output. All inputs and outputs are HDMI V1.3 and HDCP compliant and the device can be controlled via an Infrared remote device or by use of a dedicated front panel push button. The AVT-6544 provides a large variety of bit rates and signal format processing. In addition, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby True-HD and SACD Embedded Audio are fully supported. “Hot Plug” signal detection technology is integral to the unit and an ergonomically friendly design is implemented throughout. An AC power adapter is provided. www.avtoolbox.com

The camera controller is, as the previous CP7801, preloaded with an algorithm for moving up to four cameras supported by the Visca protocol. The new iPad feature is not only preloaded with a camera control application that allows the user to easily pre-set up to 400 seats per camera, but makes it possible to assign delegate names to the seats. Video feedback makes it possible to pre-set camera positions by walking around in the meeting area by just using the wireless iPad. When operating the system, the camera controller controls the camera(s) as well as an optional video switcher. When a microphone turns on, the controller moves the first available camera to the specific seat. It is possible to set a delay before the camera switches to an active seat, to avoid pictures of camera movement. It is also possible to specify how many microphones have to be opened before the camera controller switches to an overview picture. www.dis.cc

Barco introduces ClickShare that enhances meeting room technology When you know that 30 million PowerPoint presentations are produced around the world every day, you can imagine how much time – and money – is lost waiting for technicians to get them working properly. ClickShare is Barco’s answer to this inefficiency, making connection to the meeting room’s video system a matter of clicking a button. A standard ClickShare set-up consists of four USB devices (the ‘ClickShare Buttons’), a storage basket (the ‘ClickShare Tray’) for neatly storing ClickShare Base the Buttons when they’re not in use button paired and a Base Unit. The Base Unit has a fixed connection to the meeting room’s AV system and handles all processing. Users who want to put their presentation on the large meeting room screen simply connect a Button to their PC or MAC, click it … and immediately their desktop is transferred wirelessly to the large visualization system. What’s more, ClickShare doesn’t interfere with the laptop’s resolution, and it automatically displays the screen content optimally. ClickShare also allows you to show video clips with frame rates of up to 20 fps. ClickShare also enables the other meeting attendees to participate more actively. When they too connect a ClickShare Button to their laptop, they can put their content on-screen as well. In total, four participants can be on-screen simultaneously. This saves people the hassle of disconnecting the video cable and passing it to a colleague. www.barco.com/en/static/clickshare

Elite launches the Airflex 5D Dual-Channel 3D Controller The Airflex 5D provides an affordable solution for a professional-grade passive 3D home theater experience. It features the latest in HDMI High Speed, 1.4a technology that achieves 1080P resolution with either 2D or 3D presentations. To make operation easy, its automatic 3D signal detection supports different 3D formats. In addition to the Airflex 5D’s DISP-5D5 capability to create immersive 3D images, it can also be configured to use as a stacking processor that nearly doubles the brightness of the projected image. This way, despite the superb contrast provided by the DISP-5D5’s active 3D processing, it will not dim the picture quality. In addition to active 3D glasses being expensive and bulky they are known to create a greater degree of physical discomfort to the eyes. The constant micro-flashing shutter effect that is created by the active 3D glasses is known to cause eyestrain and even nausea in viewers. Here is where a crucial advantage of passive 3D comes into play. Not only are the passive 3D glasses inexpensive, light-weight and comfortable to wear; they don’t flicker like active 3D glasses do. This eliminates the bulk of vision discomfort created in 3D glasses for a greater degree of physical comfort.

Lastly, its convenient self-contained design allows the user to connect with the audio/video source, power up and play without the assistance of any additional equipment or computer programming.

Elite Screens’ AirFlex 5D will be available in October 2012 through the retail and integrator sales channels. It comes with Elite’s two-year manufacturer’s limited warranty. www.elitescreens.com

Optocore develops network intercom for RTS Following the strategic partnership set up last year with intercom solutions provider Clear-Com, which saw the launch of the V3R-FX-INTERCOM and X6R-FX-INTERCOM, Optocore has taken a further step towards making the Optocore system more flexible with intercom transport by developing a similar network intercom solution for RTS. Based on Optocore’s well-known V3RFX / X6R-FX1U series architecture the devices are equipped with standard RJ45 interfaces, which make cabling simple and cost-efficient. As a result of creating an intercom version based on these converters, the new intercom devices are also Line-In and Line-Out converters. The V3R-FX-INTERCOM for RTS integrates seamlessly into the Optocore Optical Digital network system and intercom inputs can be routed to MADI, AES/EBU or Line outputs, with Intercom messages and control data from RTS user panels or matrix sent transparently through the optical network. Each single intercom channel can be routed to every INTERCOM device in the network via the Optocore Control software. The V3R-FX-INTERCOM device is equipped with eight RJ45 intercom interfaces — four ports for panels and

The new X6R-FX INTERCOM for RTS interfaces

four ports for matrix. The pin out of the connectors is compatible with all RTS devices, so there is no need to use special cables or adapters — a standard straight CAT5 can be used. The Word Clock IN and OUT enables the synchronisation of the units to an external source and is used to pass on the word clock from one unit to the next. For stand-alone applications, the devices are equipped with an internal word clock. One V3R-FX-INTERCOM can exchange up to 1024 intercom channels from the fibre network, 64 intercom channels from the SANE network and eight intercom channels from the I/O interfaces. The V3RFX INTERCOM units can be operated and controlled via the Optocore network with Optocore Control, without the necessity

of any external data cable. For control in stand-alone applications, USB, RS232 or LAN port on the front / rear panel can be used. The FPGA (field programmable gate array) based concept of the internal logic circuitry permits updating of the firmware ensuring a continual state-ofthe-art device. The X6R-FX-INTERCOM for RTS has similar architecture and features, but with eight ports (to Panel) and eight ports (to Matrix); one port can be used either to Panel or to Matrix — though not at the same time (for example Ports 1-4 may be connected to RTS panels and ports 5-8 to RTS Matrix). www.optocore.com

The Haivision IP video distribution system allows students, faculty, and staff to access the content and view the lectures either with Haivision’s “zero footprint” InStream™ soft player on their desktops and laptops, or via Haivision’s Stingray STBs on televisions. Moreover, the system requires very little effort from the university’s IT staff, providing ease of use for all users from anywhere on the new state-of-the-art campus. Once a recorded session is archived, all of its catalog references are published in HTML onto the university’s network in a simple, intuitive Web catalog, which staff and students can access at either high or low quality — depending on the user’s network connection — thanks to the Makito’s HiLo-Streaming™ feature.

“We’re excited to be a part of Zayed University’s modern, new campus project — helping bring lectures to students on such a massive scale,” said Mohammed Ghafari, vice president of Haivision for the Middle East. “This grand project is a prime example of what Haivision can supply to the education market in the Middle Eastern region.” In addition to providing flexible, secure, and easy-to-use video delivery of classroom lectures, Haivision’s equipment was easily integrated with a variety of other services that were deployed on the new campus. These include Zayed University’s new translation system, digital signage system, large format LED screens, and video conferencing/distance learning systems. www.haivision.com

Hansa meets AV challenge with aplomb at Ambedkar Dental College First Audiocom Communications installation in Bengaluru The Ambedkar Dental College in Bengaluru - one of the prestigious medical institutions in the silicon capital of the country - recently acquired a unique distinction - A dedicated auditorium with multi-purpose functionality of sophistication. The challenging task was taken up and executed with aplomb by the locally-based AV solutions provider Hansa Pictures. SIA presents an account. The Ambedkar Dental College in Bengaluru one of the premier seats of dental education in the State - recently completed 25 years of academic existence. To commemorate the milestone achievement the management wanted to create an iconic embellishment to the institution which could serve many generations to come. An ideal choice was to have a ‘dedicated’ auditorium with multiple functionalities to meet their growing needs. They created a shell space on the third floor of the college building and then pondered over what needed to be done. While they did have a set of ideas on how they should have the facility done, there were many issues to be addressed, and they scouted for an able solutions provider who could deliver exactly what they wanted.

They found one, after due diligence. Hansa Pictures, who have earned a name for executing many such projects. Thus came in Hansa, with a solution they thought was best.

“The brief wasn’t really one,” quips Gautam N Shah, Director of Hansa Pictures. “It was as sizeable as it could get.” According to him, the facility had to be a multi-purpose space to include dramatics, academics and other college events. It started with having an AV install to facilitate cultural performance with lighting, acoustics, seating design, motorized curtain systems etc. and went on to expand to electrical job;

control room design; stage design and commercial lighting set-up. “Their impression was that awarding extra work to the same vendor would ease their work and help in proper work co-ordination,” Gautam says, adding, “it was, however, a big challenge at our end as it meant that we had to go out of our domain and execute many other jobs. We took up the challenge.” According to him, the greatest challenge in a turnkey project is to see that everything works in tandem without criss-crossing or disturbing any other work. An important aspect of the challenge was that there was no specific acoustic consultant. “The minute we got the job, we broke down the task to nuts and bolts,” explains Gautam. “We took up the acoustics first. While we had finished with the grid, the client was still to finalize on the electrical contractor and the AC supplier. That we were tasked with extra jobs, we immediately replanned our schedule and drew up our strategy.” The Hansa team had 30dB-35dB in mind to be achieved in this auditorium. It was achievable as it was a grid type with

has always amazed me. The sound reproduction is simply superb. We have installed Tannoy in the past and it has always been my choice as the product, technology and quality are superior, especially the VX series speakers.”

Rockfon ceiling tiles with .9NRC sound absorption. Past that, the side walls and back walls were treated with slit plywood of 6mm gaps with poly-wadding behind it up to a height of five feet. The reason for slits in the design was to help in sound reflection and also to protect the walls from getting dirty. Past five feet from there on, the installer applied woodwool boards and fabric laid over it. Another potential challenge came up from the stage. While the stage itself was small, it had a wall on one side. To make the stage bigger, for facilitating flexible movement of performers, it had to be extended by four feet, and to do this, even the side wall had to be extended. “That this happened just a few days before the inauguration date, it was quite a big task,” admits Gautam.

“We had suggestions coming in from Krishna of Tannoy, so we were very confident of the product as well,” he continues, “the best part about the VX12 speaker is their sound dispersion. The speakers have a great throw and the sound is very clean.” Choosing to drive the speakers through Lab.gruppen amps was yet another intelligent move they made, explains the installer. That the amp was compact and powerful gave them multiple advantages. The four-channel amp was so powerful that it could power all the speakers in the auditorium. Its very compact size meant that it occupied much lesser space and helped conserve energy. They did not have to tweak too much, admits Gautam, thanks to the Biamp Nexia SP digital signal processor- just some basic delay setting, addition of

AV- the all important factor: The key feature of AV at this project is the use of Tannoy speakers and Lab.gruppen amplifiers. Says Gautam: “Tannoy’s dual concentric technology

While the whole install, despite challenges, had been completed as per the upgraded client requirements, Gautam admits having one regret. The balcony was not ready before the inauguration and the total number of seats available were only 190. If the balcony was ready, another 64 seats would have made the auditorium look complete. Having said that Gautam and his team are happy that they won the appreciation from the Chairman of the institution, Gurappaji. “It was a mission-critical operation accomplished with gust and determination,” Gautam conjures up. www.hansagroup.in www.tannoy.com www.lab.gruppen.com

Lighting was another important factor. The lighting grid was manufactured locally with MS pipes, and designed like a matrix keeping flexibility in mind. “The choice was clearly ETC (Electronic Theatre Controls),” affirms the installer, “the fixtures are very rugged, easy to use, aesthetically appealing and most importantly energy saving. Using a lesser intensity bulb like 575W Halogen, the brightness is equivalent to a 750W fixture of any other brand.” Another important aspect of the install was configuring the motorized curtains. While the grid was manufactured locally, the main screen curtain which opens sideways is controlled by a RF remote over a somfy motor.

which was installed for the first time in Bengaluru. As it is, two-way communication between the people on stage and the technical staff in the control room is imperative, explains the installer. Conventional modes like cellular phones and walkie-talkie have their own issues; the Audiocom conduit is the best in that it is a hotline system. The person wanting to communicate has to just press a button and start talking. It is seamless and reliable.

limiters and gains, and it is foolproof. No chance of tampering. “This was important since the venue is a college and multiples of people would try fiddling with it.” Complementing the audio was a meticulous video characterized by an NEC projector and a motorized screen. The chosen NEC M420X projector throws an image size up to 13ft x 10ft. Moreover, it has a host of inputs- two computers, two video inputs, one HD input, and one networking port for multiple connectivity. The display component was handled by installing a Fixed Frame Screen which acts as a projection surface as well as a cyclorama screen forming a backdrop.

Audiocom Communications installation: An interesting, unique feature of the install here is the choice of Audiocom system from Telex Communications,

terminations make up the reflective pool with a Pharos LED touch panel controller. In addition rated as one of the largest Strand lighting installations in the world, for the whole venue, the lighting control is based on a new software said to be specially designed for the QNCC venue. The cutting-edge facilities with the venue are all controlled from a central Control Room. Playing a central role in the control mechanism is a cleverly networked Peavey MediaMatrix which integrates the processes of a CobraNet and Crestron RoomView running through the facilities for audio while the video is controlled by means of the Evertz Broadcast System. The ceiling mounted speakers throughout the venue are from JBL, which are powered by amplifiers from Lab.gruppen.

AV at World’s first Green Technology Venue Techno Q weaves AV expertise into QNCC While there had been some incredible technology exploits across the Middle East in the recent past, some have really stood apart from the rest. The Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) ranks a slot among them. Playing an ingenious AV role in the world’s first green technology venue with LEED certification that the QNCC is, is Techno Q, the leading AV solutions provider from Qatar. SIA presents an account of what is said to be one of the largest AV projects in Qatar.

entrusted with the task of setting up the complete lighting control system and AV systems in the exhibition halls, meeting rooms, hospitality suites, VVIP lounges and administration rooms. The landmark project took approximately two years to complete and involved a team of 60 full-time personnel on the project site towards realising the client’s specifications.

The iconic Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha - arguably one of the most ambitious infrastructural projects in the entire Middle East - is unique for reasons more than one. It being the world’s first structure built to the Gold Certification of US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED) is just one. It’s incredible size and scaling in terms of offerings and technology harness are what make for all the rest. Generically, the project is characterized by 40, 000 square meters of exhibition space; Conference Hall for 4,000 delegates; 2,300-seat lyric style theatre; Three additional tiered auditoriums; Theatrestyle seating, banquet space for up to 10,000 in exhibition halls; A total of 52 meeting rooms; Luxurious lounges; hospitality suites; Business centre and media rooms. It also features one of the world’s largest lighting systems. While all this make up one set of features, the other set is that of the cutting edge technology, courtesy of the expertise of Doha-based AVSI major Techno Q, the result of which is the emergence of one the country’s largest AV projects. Involved during Phase-II of the multibillion dollar project, Techno Q was

Sheraton Hotel at Brigade Gateway, Bengaluru Scaling new high in AV integration The Hospitality segment in Bengaluru - the popular Garden City of India - is scaling new highs, audio-visually. While there have been many a site that have showcased ingenious AV integration, the one that came to the fore recently literally took the brilliance of AV to a fascinatingly new level. The Sheraton Hotel at the Brigade Gateway in the heart of the city plays host to this brilliance, while the honours of weaving it is taken by the locally head-quartered, pan-Asia AV major IAV India. The newest and, probably, the most pompous landmark of Bengaluru today, the Brigade Gateway is an expansive and luxurious lifestyle enclave comprising many unique, and grandiose featuresthe World Trade Centre Towers, the massive Orion Mall and multiplex, a landscaping green space, a man-made lake and more. The five-star Sheraton hotel, promoted by Starwood Group of Hotels, forms an important part of the whole big phenomenon that the project is. When IAV India was tasked with weaving an efficient and sophisticated audiovisual network across the premises of the hotel, it was nothing less than ambitious. For, the task involved integrating as

many as a dozen distinct spaces within the premises: Background Music for Passage Area, Elevators, Lobby etc; Function Halls; Divisible Banquet Halls; Board Room & Meeting Rooms; Spa Area; Health Club; Aerobics Centre; Gym Area; Open Swimming Pool Area; Executive Lounge; Bene, Feast, Persian Restaurants and Durbar the BAR Area. While a finely tuned background music system forms a backbone entertainment fare across the lobby, corridors, elevators, passage area spaces, a powerful audio system runs discretely across the Function Halls, divisible Banquet Halls, Meeting Rooms and Boardroom. The large banquet halls, which can be partitioned into two halves, are equipped with high-end audio, video and control systems. The unique feature of these spaces is that each half can play the same AV set-up as the large single hall. The audio system here is mainly by Speakercraft ceiling speakers which derive their power from the amplifiers installed in the AV Room Rack Area. The speech reinforcement is done by AKG wireless microphones which are

driven through a Biamp DSP. The video functions are handled by two ceiling mounted NEC high brightness projectors held by COMM projector lifts. The video display function is complemented by two Da-Lite projection screens. In the event of a business demand for one common presentation, either of the two projectors can be activated for content display, and if in a divisible mode, both the projectors can be commissioned simultaneously. All the audio, video and display systems are controlled by a Crestron control panel. The Board room, besides the regular AV, is equipped with both audio and video conferencing systems. The speech reinforcement functions are handled by Crown MB3 table embedded microphones. All the audio sources are powered through a Biamp DSP. The video component comprises ceiling-mounted NEC projectors, held by a COMM Projector Lift, and complemented by 84-inch projection screens and a 52-inch Samsung LCD. The video conferencing here is handled by a Tandberg VC system that is complimented by a Sony EVI-D100 camera. The controls are again held by the Crestron control system.

Function rooms

The Function Rooms are almost similar to that of the Banquet Hall in that the audio is entrusted to Speakercraft ceiling-mount speakers while the speech reinforcement is done by AKG wireless microphones. Both the audio sources are connected via a Biamp DSP, and powered by an amplifier. While the projection system is again like that of the banquet hall with two single- and dualoperable projectors, the one difference is the use of two Samsung 52-inch LCDs in place of the Da-Lite screen(s). While all the systems are controlled by a Crestron control panel, the systems can be used either for small requirement in divisible mode, or for large gatherings with both the projection systems coming into play simultaneously. The SPA, Health Club, Aerobics, and Gym are all equipped with independent audio systems which are also synchronised with the BGM of the premises for a generic centralized music. While the audio is the same combination of Speakercraft and BiAMP, what is unique here is that each of the locations sports a Source Selection and volume control. The video part is by basic displays incorporated for TV viewing / digital signage.

Darbar the Bar features Tannoy speakers

So too are the restaurants AV set-up.While they all have independent AV set-up, all the sources have been synchronized with the centralized music system. The Darbar features Tannoy speakers and Yamaha subs complementing its audio. This also works as an Independent zone as per the business demand. “Audio in this space has been designed keeping in view a specific demand,” informs Avinash Nichani, Country Manager at IAV India, who had been involved in the project from start to finish. “The guest should experience higher sound quality here, compared to other areas of the premises,” he explained, “which is why we have Tannoy and Yamaha systems.” The space also has been equipped with a DJ mixer to contribute to increased entertainment. Giving video display to the guests is a 65-inch Samsung LFD panel. “For an effective and uniform Background Music across the premises, over 200 Speakercraft Speakers have been installed,” informs Avinash. “These speakers are made to derive their power from an eight-channel BiAMP amplifier using zone control methods.”

Bene Restaurant

According to him, even the Car Calling System has been meticulously designed as part of the AV integration. As many as over 100 wall-mountable speakers

All the AV equipment are controlled from a centralised AV Rack

have been installed across the space with wireless microphones for speech reinforcement. The unique feature of the install is that the AV functionalities of the entire premises are controlled from a centralized AV Rack which is placed in the third floor. Any command such as dimming the lights, switching on or off the projectors, rolling up or down the presentation screens etc. from the control panel in the particular space is sent to the AV Rack, and from there it is executed. This effectively eliminated the need for multiple AV racks at multiple spaces. “The Sheraton hotel project has been a very prestigious project for us,” conjures up the IAV executive. “We accomplished with a finesse to rave about.” www.iavindia. com

From Rock Music To Installed Sound — And Back The Ever-Developing Story Of QSC Audio We find out how an audio equipment manufacturer that started in a garage on the West Coast of the USA surfed the crest of California’s 1970’s tech boom to grow into one of the biggest names in professional sound reinforcement and audio networking systems — and how it made the transition from selling to American rock musicians to international contractors and integrators and back again. Although it predated the foundation of Messrs Jobs and Wozniak’s now-famous computer company by several years, QSC Audio Products, like Apple Computer, also began in a garage, and developed into a company that eventually exceeded the wildest dreams of its founders. From its late 1960’s, loose, fuzzy-haired beginnings as a hand-to-mouth builder and retailer of guitar amplifiers and small PA systems to its transformation into one of the international sound reinforcement industry’s biggest names in amplification, loudspeakers, cinema sound, signal processing and, more recently, digital audio networking and control, the Costa Mesa-based QSC — again, just like Apple Inc — has grown beyond the specialised market in which it began trading without ever losing its connection to it. And today, as the company continues to grow under the guidance of Joe Pham, its youthful CEO and President of two years’ standing, much of its business in the contractor market is coming from the Pacific Rim, and specifically China.

A Little History…

retail from a small shop, but by the late 1970’s, they had made the first of the big changes at the company, eschewing the higher but more transient profits of direct retail and focusing on making rack-mount power amps for the sound reinforcement market. By the end of the 1970’s, QSC had honed itself into a power amp company with a good reputation for quality, reliability and responsive service.

Company founders Pat Quilter and Barry Andrews in the 1970s

Amplifier designer and engineer Pat Quilter (the ‘Q’ in ‘QSC, trading in its early years as the Quilter Sound Company) met speaker cabinet builder Barry Andrews by chance in Costa Mesa in 1968, and they formed an amplifier business. Together with Barry’s brother John, the trio built a name for the fledgling QSC by targeting rock bassists and guitarists with their early amplifiers, including the splendidly named Quilter Sound Thing and the Big Bertha. In the early years, the trio combined somewhat ad hoc manufacture with end-user

In the early 1980’s, the company’s amplifiers were held in sufficiently high regard that Dolby Labs turned to QSC to produce a series of OEM power amps for their cinema sound systems. Before long, it had become known that the QSC designers were behind the Dolbybranded cinema amps, and the company had taken its next big step, launching its own brand cinema systems and processors. Cinema amplification, signal processing and now loudspeakers are integral parts of QSC cinema solutions to this day. During the 1990’s, as digital audio technologies began to supplant analogue

means of audio distribution and signal processing, QSC developed QSControl — a monitoring, processing and control system to manage and tie all of these products together. QSC was also the first company to license the CobraNet® audio-over-Ethernet interconnection protocol, providing an affordable means to network audio via IP-based Ethernet networks, which were fast becoming standard IT infrastructure everywhere at the time.

The company also began to emphasize a systems-oriented approach to product design and development. Although QSC subsequently continued to push the envelope over the next decade with amplifier designs such as the RMX and the PowerLight™ Series, the company’s reliance on amplifiers for so much of its revenue was put under scrutiny at this time, following the spread of competing lower-cost, active speaker systems that required no external amplification.

CEO and President Joe Pham

Around the turn of the Millennium, the QSC management began considering the company’s business plan for the next few years. The founders, Pat Quilter and the Andrews brothers, began to look towards transitioning out of the dayto-day operation of the company, and started to select team members who could one day assume a management role. In 2004, Joe Pham joined QSC from McKinsey & Company consulting as Chief Strategy & Technology Officer, and rose swiftly through the ranks of the QSC management with the blessing of the company founders, before being appointed to the position of President and CEO in 2010.

It was no accident that QSC began developing its own active speaker designs at around this time, returning to the design and sale of loudspeaker systems after many years away from that market, and creating low-cost, high performance active speakers for the PA market. From humble beginnings in 2001, the QSC loudspeaker range has now expanded to encompass the “House of K” active speakers (K, KW and KLA Series, equally popular with the portable PA market and contractors in the installed sound market), the ILA Series (a compact, passive line array system), and WideLine™ (a multifunctional, wide-dispersion, highoutput line array series). Also aimed at contractors and system integrators worldwide is the AcousticDesign™ range of installation loudspeakers, designed to combine discreet aesthetics with high performance.

Richard Zwiebel, head of the team behind CobraNet and now QSC Vice President of Systems Strategy

Providing a complete set of system solutions was also regarded as a logical next step by the management, reflecting install customers’ need for increasingly integrated systems. QSControl had been an early attempt at this — now research and development focused on making digital products whose functions could be controlled as part of a complete QSC system, bringing together digital signal processing and routing with system monitoring and control. As part of this emphasis on interconnection and control networks, the former Peak Audio team (the inventors of CobraNet® and MediaMatrix®), led by Peak’s founders, Richard Zwiebel and John Britton, was brought on board. With their help, the company developed Q-LAN, a proprietary implementation of audioover-Ethernet for use with standard Layer 3 IT networks. Q-LAN, which is based upon well established IT industry standards, allows audio to be passed via the existing IT infrastructure of modern buildings, venues and stadiums, and avoids the need for contractors to install dedicated audio networking systems at great extra cost. Under Joe Pham’s strategic direction, the company accelerated its move to a systems-based approach to product design, culminating in the launch of the Q-Sys™ integrated platform in 2009. Q-Sys can route, process and manage everything in the audio chain between the audio input and the loudspeakers, and can provide all the audio routing, processing, control and monitoring required for any facility.

“We had to do that,” comments Rich Zwiebel, now QSC Vice President of Systems Strategy, explaining the move to integrated, system-led product design. “Back in the 90’s, there were many separate companies that made amps, processors and speakers. Most of them have either amalgamated or disappeared. To achieve growth, we had to move towards integrated systems. And there are other advantages, too. Rather than have lots of poorly integrated teams working for separate companies all creating pieces of a system, at QSC there is one team designing pieces that work together. This gives us so much more control of the end result.”

Growth In The East Many companies based in the USA and Western Europe talk of the importance of Chinese markets for their future growth, but for QSC, it’s truer than it is for many of the wishful thinkers out there. State infrastructure — at airports, transport hubs, railway stations and legislative assemblies — is simply not being created or renewed in the West at the rate it is in China, where it is taking place on a grand scale even against the backdrop of the world economic downturn. And Q-Sys is an ideal solution for networked audio management as part of exactly this type of systems-led infrastructure project. In addition to many government infrastructure-related projects in China, QSC has installed Q-Sys or QSControl networks at Universal Studios’ Sentosa Island Theme Park in Singapore, at the famous Hong Kong Jockey Club, and at Terminal 3 of Hong Kong Airport, to name just a few recent installations. As a reflection of the importance of the Asia/Pacific Rim region to QSC, in 2010 the company opened its own office in Hong Kong. “In my opinion, our Asian distributors are amongst our most technically aware customers,” comments Rich Zwiebel. “They’re really good at getting the most out of what an open

system like Q-Sys can offer, and we’ve seen that in some of the projects we’ve done in China and Singapore, or in the state-of-the-art systems we created for the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou.” “The Hong Kong office shows a commitment by QSC to this region,” adds Shawn Watts, QSC Senior Director of International Sales and Global Education. “We now have a focal point in the correct time zone dedicated to supporting, training and educating our sales channels and end-users in the region, with a training and demo facility to support that. We have also brought in regional post-sales support, and translation capabilities so that we can have marketing materials in the key local languages. As a company, we’ve worked hard and put a lot of investment in recent years into creating infrastructure to provide good service and support, training and education programmes. The latest fruit of that approach is the web site www.qsctraining.com, aimed at dealers, contractors and end-users. It has just launched in English, but one of our major aims for it is that it will be in multiple languages before long; we’re actually working on the Chinese version now.”

In the same way that Apple has grown out of all recognition from the company founded to sell breadboard-based kit computers assembled in a garage, but still owes much of its company image to the computer industry that spawned it, QSC has come a long way, but has remained true to its fundamentals. Despite all the changes in the products it makes, and the people running it, QSC is still a company run by passionate individuals that care about their workforce and are intent on making products and providing services that its customers can trust — whether said customers are fledgeling Costa Mesa-based garage bands with a few gigs under their belts, or major integrators handling the installation of PA/VA infrastructure across China’s rapidly developing cityscapes. The final word has to go to Rich Zwiebel, who has the following to say about what it’s like to work at the company 43 years after it was founded. “QSC still feels like an oldfashioned audio company. Everybody here has a passion for what they do. And the driving force is not just ‘what are this quarter’s figures going to look like’, but ‘how can we advance this market and make higher quality products for our customers.’ In my experience, no company ever made really good products just by thinking about the money they could make from them. The best results come when people are really fired up about what the products can do, when they’re dying to see the finished product they’ve designed, because they think it’s going to be so cool to have. If everyone is given the room to excel at what they do, and everyone loves what they’re doing — you can’t lose. And that’s what this company is like.” www.qscaudio.com

The Means Of Production In the mid-1990’s, QSC invested in a purpose-built, semi-automated production facility for the first time, and moved to its current site in Costa Mesa, Southern California. Today, the 51,000-square-foot company headquarters is situated alongside its 81,000-square-foot manufacturing facility. If required, the manufacturing systems at QSC can now produce a complete assembled product 45 minutes after electronic receipt of an order. This has revolutionised not only the business of manufacture but also product storage at the company — now relatively little space is required to store finished QSC products, as they can be manufactured to order and shipped almost immediately.

The enthusiastic response from exhibitors has prompted the organizer to increase the floor area available for InfoComm China next year. “We have asked for two more halls for InfoComm China 2013, to accommodate the overwhelming demand for more space from exhibitors as well as new requests from companies which missed this year’s show,” announced Richard Tan, General Manager of InfoCommAsia Pte Ltd. “The successful conclusion of the 2012 Show no doubt triggered this response, but from what I’ve gathered, participants – both exhibitors and visitors – were also highly optimistic of near-term business conditions in China. The feeling on the ground is that China will prevail over the current global economic challenges. Businesses in general are confident that conditions are improving. Already, China’s first quarter performance – at 8.1% - exceeds the 7.5% target set for 2012,” Richard continued. This optimism is in fact reflected by the recent IMF announcement of its upward revision of global growth forecasts, with China expecting to grow at 8.2% this year and 8.8% in 2013. Adder Technology exhibits Network DVI Extender ADDERLink INFINITY allows you to build a flexible infrastructure, the likes of which have not been possible before. Locate computers anywhere you like, share connections to computers, watch the interactions others have with computers, share, control, collaborate, switch computers, and so on. The ADDERLink INFINITY is also the first device of its kind to allow multicasting across the network. Optimized for both HID and Mass Storage devices, the ADDERLink INFINITY uses USB 2.0 technology to deliver reliable and flexible device support. ADDERLink INFINITY transmitter and receiver units allow multiple remote users to access host computers in a very flexible manner. Such flexibility requires management and coordination - that

is where A.I.M (ADDERLink INFINITY Manager) becomes vital. Joe Chang, North Asia manager of Adder Technology (Asia Pacific) informs that Adder has had a rep office in Shanghai since 2009. “Every year we are growing at about the rate of 15%. Our AV Extenders have gone beyond our traditional Industrial Automation workshop floors to the Broadcast, Air Traffic, Financial House and even Digital Signage segments. We continue to see huge potential in China as it is rapidly changing. For us our greatest challenge will be in keeping pace and competing with the local vendors solutions.” www.adder.com

AMX showcases Enova DVX and DGX for the first time in China Amongst its many solutions at the booth, taking pride of place were the Enova DVX and Enova DGX that were being showcased for the first time in China. Enova has been highlighted by AMX as being at the forefront of a revolution in AV technology. The Enova DVX All-InOne Presentation Switchers and Enova DGX 16/32 Digital Media Switchers combine all of the components you need to control/automate any environment into a simple, flexible, comprehensive solution including control, multi-format inputs, video switching, transcoding and scaling, local and remote distribution, plus audio mixing, and amplification - all in a single box.

China also continues to be a strong region for AMX with continued growth. “We have also added more resources into China with our service centres up and running in Beijing and Guangzhou and of course Shanghai to support our distributors and clients,” says Chris Yang, GM (North Asia region) of AMX. With their solutions being deployable in almost any environment, Chris and his team had also painstakingly created an Applications Guide in Mandarin for distribution at the exhibition. The Guide provides specifications, case studies and highlights about various connectivity options and even provides comparisons thus making it indispensable. “The case studies showcase AMX solutions being

used in various environments, which we feel will resonate with the visitors in better understanding our solutions,” says Chris Yang. www.amxasia.com

Blackmagic design continues its successful foray into the InfoComm market A strategic decision to participate at last year’s InfoComm International USA, has seen Blackmagic design continue with that strategy at ISE and at InfoComm China, achieving its objective of reaching out to a different market segment other than their traditional broadcast and production market segments. China has been a very good market for BMD. Cai Jin, the sales manager for China at BMD comments, “Our first quarter sales in 2012 has soared year-on-year. We offer high quality solutions but at affordable cost which is ideal for the AV market. We have seen our products being used in the Education and Government sectors.” Seeing the busy booth throughout the 3 days, BMD should continue to see increased interest in their solutions in China. www.blackmagic-design.com Qian Huaiyu of Oxygen Technologies with Cia Jin of BMD

China a major market for Dataton WATCHOUT Dataton WATCHOUT version 5.2 was demonstrated at InfoComm Asia. As well as having WATCHOUT in local Chinese language, Dataton’s 284-page English manual was also recently translated to Mandarin, in time for InfoComm China, to enable new comers to pick up all the features that Dataton’s WATCHOUT software offers. In addition, two days prior to the show, Dataton, working with local partner Audio Visual Technique conducted its first WATCHOUT Academy pilot training sessions, which saw a very encouraging response with 60 participants. The in-depth training was to widen the knowledge of participants for its WATCHOUT solution. Considering that China is the largest market in which it operates contributing to onethird of Dataton’s revenue globally, it is not surprising to the great lengths that

Dataton has gone to engage the industry in China. “Over the last 5-years we have noticed tremendous improvement of production work and design in China,” says Fredrik Svahnberg of Dataton. “The dynamics in China is just amazing. This is our largest individual market. The World Expo was the catalyst which created references for Dataton. We have continued to be engaged with the industry and have seen significant sales here. And on the first day of the exhibition, I can categorically state that it was the best day ever for any trade show in Asia that we have participated in and the success was enjoyed by ourselves and our Shanghai and Hong-Kong based partner Audio Visual Technique.”

Fredrik Svahnberg of Dataton

In addition to the trade show activities, Dataton hosted a guided tour at the Beijing Gets Moving Exhibition which uses WATCHOUT to warp and blend images on to a 228-meter screen. www.dataton.com

Digital Projection sees double digit sales growth in China

Bruce Xiong, National Manager, Digital Projection China with Nick Cottiss, International Sales and Marketing Director

Showcasing a full range of projectors covering every high-end market segments needs such as simulation, conferencing, medical research and events, Digital Projection had a busy time at InfoComm China. Bruce Xiong, National Manager, Digital Projection informs, “DP entered China in 2006 and six years later we have well established channels across China and sales has doubled every year.” There are three DP offices in China located at Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou that provide service support and training. “We conduct technical training every month

from April to September to enable our distributors to get the best out of our projectors. Formatted within a Road Show concept, this enables us to also train customers and system integrators. This is an important aspect of our business in China as China as a single country is third worldwide for us in terms of sales figures and is our fastest growing country. I expect China to climb up a spot to number two within two years,” says a pleased Bruce. www.dp-china.com.cn

DIS continues to engage the China market The DIS booth which was designed together with their distributor, Wincomn, depicted 60 years of DIS visually through its graphics, which was hard to miss. More importantly it subtly highlighted to the market that DIS has a long and proud tradition and is a trustworthy brand. “This year we have once again noticed a number of new China conference solutions companies attending and others also missing. They will find it very competitive and we will see if they can last the pace to make any impact,” says Kim Muurholm Jurgensen, Area Sales Manager of DIS. “As for ourselves we have over the years invested much time and resources getting our foot into the Chinese market and establishing ourselves. I would say that we are definitely within the top 5 brands for

conference solutions in China today even though we are not represented in the low end segments. Wincomn is a great company to work with. In fact at the end of this year we will be celebrating our 10th anniversary relationship with Wincomn. Our relationship is built on trust and long term commitment.” Kim is also fairly confident that China will once again prove to be a DIS top three market when their fiscal year comes to an end in May. Taking centre stage at the booth of course was the new DDS 5900 fully digital discussion system, which will be ready for shipment this summer! www.dis.cc www.wincomn.com.cn (L-R) Kim Jurgensen and Jon Nielsen of DIS

dnp exhibits prototype of its new Short Throw front projection screen dnp took the opportunity at InfoComm China to show for the first time ever a prototype of its new Short Throw front projection screen aptly named dnp ST screen. The prototype shown was an 80” 16:9 format. Targeted at the education and conference market,it is expected to be available from August, together with a 100” model. Another highlight was the Supernova Winflex which was showcased in a 120” 16:9 format. The Supernova Winflex combines revolutionary Supernova optical screen technology, as well as innovative, elegant, space-saving design, creating a flexible and scalable high-quality front projection screen. The screen’s high contrast filters can effectively absorb ambient light, to display crystal clear images even under bright lighting in meeting rooms and exhibition halls or any such environments. Combining excellent black and brightness levels, the screen can be viewed from any angle ensuring clear, vivid images that eliminates visual fatigue for viewers. Other than that, the booth also featured the Supernova Infinity, Supernova Panaroma, Supernova One, Supernova Core, Supernova Mobile and Zenith rear optical screens. Wincomn has represented dnp since 1997 in China and became its exclusive distributor in 2006. “The market in China is undergoing a change again,” says Anjum Pawaiz, Area Sales Manager, Asia. “There are now many big players in the flat panel segment. From the government to the military to private corporations and consumers there is demand for flat panels, which will drive down prices but will also help drive technologies like OLED. The private and corporate sector will become the driving force in China in coming years as people become more knowledgeable. It will become a challenge for the incumbent players in the AV segment as they have to become more updated to tackle new opportunities. Mindsets have to be changed and I am pleased that Wincomm is now investing in its people in terms of furthering their expertise and knowledge so that they can go into the different segments to grab the opportunities.” www.dnp-screens.com

TV One confident of continuous growth in China The past four years has seen a 45% sales growth every year for TV One in China and this year expectations are higher. With more offices coming online soon to complement the two other TV One offices in Shanghai and Beijing to provide service and sales support, and the appointment of one of China’s most established distributor, IPAV recently to specifically push TV One’s C3-340 product, the targets set seem reachable. “IPAV has very good connections and network in China and we just appointed them to specifically distribute our C3340 product. One of the reasons is that IPAV is also a SONY broadcast camera distributor and the C3-340 fits in well in a broadcast environment,” says Kent Li, who is responsible for sales in China. The C3-340 offers an industry first firmware based video routing, switching and video conversion platform. 16 AV universal module slots are available and the CORIO®matrix automatically recognizes the modules inserted as an input or output module. It can be configured up to 32 I/O combinations using 3G-SDI/DVI-U connection combinations and up to 62 I/O’s are possible utilizing only SDI modules. This flexibility allows end user configurations

to be based on their own needs instead of the router forcing a certain setup and limited configuration. Additional DVI-U or 3G-SDI modules can be added later in open slots and all AV modules are hot swappable.

One, there is ample opportunity to tap on opportunities in the AV segment. “We also have plans to conduct more regular training programmes and to do roadshows soon in China which should help further cement our brand in China.”

Kent is also confident that with the broadened product line offered by TV

EXHIBITION PREVIEW

Systems Integration Asia June - July 2012

Venue: Marina Bay Sands, Hall A, Singapore Dates: 17 – 19 August 2012 (Fri-Sun) Opening Hours: 11am on all three days Closing Hours: 8pm on first two days and 6pm on last day

Inaugural exhibition provides networking and knowledge platform for growing worship technologies segment Almost anyone involved in the audio, visual and lighting industry will agree that the “Houses of Worship” segment has seen significant growth over the last few years. Installing audio and lighting systems in a place of worship is not new but the sophistication of the systems that are being installed is. This phenomenon has also reached the shores of Southeast Asia. Effect lighting systems, fullfledged broadcasting capabilities, highly sophisticated audio systems as well as digital signage systems, LED screens, high-end projectors and projection screens are now being specified for worship venues. With so many distractions in the world today, capturing the attention of

worshippers has become even more critical. Worship venues are embracing audio, visual and lighting technologies to ensure that their message is being heard. There are also more practical reasons. For a smaller venue that may not have sufficient capacity to accommodate all worshippers or during special ceremonies where the overflow of worshippers has to be taken into consideration, audio and visual technologies play a critical role. The equipment by themselves only provide half the solution. Operating the system to get the best out of the system is the other half of the solution. In almost all instances operating of the audio, visual and lighting system in a worship

venue is handled by volunteers. Training and keeping them updated will ensure that the systems are operated optimally. Thus the inaugural Houses of Worship Technologies Asia conference and exhibition provides a platform for the introduction of technologies, knowledge upgrading opportunities through manufacturer training as well as independent seminars and networking opportunities. As a dedicated segment exhibition, visitors can be assured that the focus of the exhibitors, exhibits and the conferences are tailored to their needs. It is an opportunity not to be missed.

Bosch meets the press needs at the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit Panorama Media installs Bosch Integrus infrared Language Distribution System The 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit hosted over 4,000 journalists from home and abroad at the COEX venue. The centre consists of a 1,300seat main press centre, an international broadcasting centre with more than 100 booths, and a lounge area. A premium wireless language distribution system was required in the facility to deliver the speeches at the summit which were simultaneously being translated to 18 different languages. The system had to cover the main conference hall and the centre, which covered a large floor space of 10,400 m2. KT, one of the main Professional Convention Organizer for the event chose Bosch Congress Rental Network (CRN) partner, Panorama Media, without any hesitation to provide the Language Distribution System (LDS). Panorama has been a proven partner in various previous large international conferences. Panaroma’s scope was to install the wireless language distribution system in the Media Centre as well as deliver audio signals from the main conference hall to the centre. These included 16 languages to be delivered over a long distance covered by optical media converters and linked to 16 channel Integrus Transmitters. Besides the 16 languages, 2 other languages were to be translated within the Media Centre. Hence, Panaroma installed 2 separate systems. In total, the set up consisted of 14 infrared

radiators which were installed in specific positions after a sophisticated footprint simulation software system enabled Panorama to avoid problematic spots in the venue. Delay settings to avoid black spots caused by signal cancelling from multiple radiators were implemented and the software enabled Panorama to minimize shadow areas from several big columns inside the venue which blocked the infrared signals. In addition, they provided participating journalists with 1,400 infrared receivers. The Bosch Integrus infrared LDS offered an effective method of distributing the interpretations. Infrared means wireless, so delegates had total freedom of movement. It also gave them

information integrity, because distributed signals could not pass beyond the conference hall. Throughout the conference, the Bosch Integrus LDS delivered flawless speeches with excellent sound clarity and without interference to all 3,700 journalists and reporters. This contributed to the success of the event and allowed the news to be spread globally smoothly. www.pano-m.com www.boschsecurity.co.kr

Macau’s Colegio de Santa Rosa de Lima English School features BXB WMP application First BXB PA system installed in Macau SunriseTrading Co., the BXB distributor in Hong Kong, successfully installed the first BXB PA system in Macau in August of 2011. It was installed in Colegio de Santa Rosa de Lima English Secondary school by Peter Liu and Cecillia Tang from Sunrise Trading. Franciscan Missionaries of Mary (FMM) came to Macau in 1903 to take charge of Colegio de Santa Rosa de Lima, Portuguese Section, Rua de Santa Clara. In 1932, they answered the need for education through the medium of English by opening the English Section. The Chinese Section was added in 1933 and all three sections functioned together in the same building until 1975. Rosians are known, not only for their academic dedication and perseverance, but for their multi-faceted talents and skills as well. Students from various levels have received awards in Singing, Sports and the Arts from external organizations as well as from internal competitions. There were clear demands for the school to combine campus public address and classroom teaching system. The school also wanted the broadcast of announcements to be more flexible and specific. Peter therefore designated the BXB PA system with infrared microphones based on those needs. In this way, infrared microphones can be used in classrooms and when someone

at the PA controller broadcasts through the decoders the infrared microphones will be cut temporarily; when the broadcast is completed the infrared microphones can be used again. As for broadcasting to specific zones, the BXB DPS broadcast system’s unique regional operating panel facilitates such broadcasting needs. In this project, one WMP-2100 PA controller, 64 units of WMP-60D decoders, 4 units of PAB-5400C 400W power amplifiers and one WM-02/701 music microphone was installed. According to Sunrise Trading, the project was completed successfully, not only because BXB system met the school’s needs, but the great sound quality and easy operation satisfied the school users. BXB PA system is a complete all-in-one solution, not only can it broadcast by single zone and groups, it can also be connected to PSTN to make telephone broadcast. The system can also be expanded for emergency call, burglar control and two-way intercom; what’s more, it can be operated on a software platform. In addition the BXB PA system can be integrated to environmental control, infrared and monitoring equipment. As an open system the solutions can be designed to meet the customer’s needs.

Sunrise Trading was established in Hong Kong in 1976, specializing in PA and audio-visual systems. The services cover installation, system testing, repair, maintenance and consulting. www.bxb.tw www.sunrise-trading.com

Donam-dong Catholic church features RenkusHeinz Iconyx loudspeakers Dai Kyung Vascom installs the Iconxy as part of an overall audio system upgrade The full glazed Merewether Surfhouse

Ingenious idea for a sunny Australian installation dnp 100” Supernova One front projection screens installed Dai Kyung Vascom, Renkus-Heinz distributor for South Korea, recently installed a pair of Iconyx digitally steerable array loudspeakers as part of an overall audio system upgrade for the Donam-dong Catholic church in Donamdong, Seoul, South Korea. Used for both the spoken word and music, the system was designed to improve acoustic intelligibility and musical clarity in this 400-seat local church. Patrick Han of Dai Kyung Vascom comments: “The church wanted to upgrade their system, and after assessing the space and discussing their requirements in detail, we supplied two Renkus-Heinz IC8-R units with RHAON (Renkus-Heinz Audio Operations Network) and upgraded other aspects of their system to create a better system all around.” Also installed were an Allen & Heath ML3000-24 mixer, Apex dBQ-Zero and 104-10 Aural Exciter and a variety of Sennheiser microphones. Patrick Han adds: “The reaction from worshippers and the priests to the new system has been really good and representatives from another nearby Catholic church who also came by to listen to the system were very impressed.” www.renkus-heinz.com

The fully glazed, beach-side Merewether Surfhouse, in Newcastle, NSW, presented multiple challenges for an AV installation. For example, low ceilings and lots of natural light. However, Impact AV Australia came up with an innovative solution using dnp Supernova Screens. The Merewether Surfhouse overlooks the beach and is fully glazed, which means it gets a lot of ambient light. The installer, Impact AV Australia, overcame this – and the problem of low ceilings – by teaming up with dnp Authorised Distributor Screen Technics to design flipdown ceiling-mounted screen lifters. Used in Australia for the first time here, the lifters cleverly swing down the dnp 100” Supernova One front projection screens. Silas Creel, MD at Impact AV, wanted to use dnp’s 100” Supernova One

Screens because of their exceptional brightness and contrast in high levels of ambient light, but the low ceilings and huge glazed walls were an obstacle. By joining forces with Screen Technics (led by Greg Donovan) the two companies came up with a lifter system that would simply drop the screens in place when needed. When not in use, the dnp screens are stored horizontally in the ceiling, maximising the useful ceiling height in the centre without obscuring the visual impact of the fully glazed exterior walls. When needed, the screens swing down to a position facing the interior by the custom lifters. As a bonus, the very high gain dnp screens eliminate the need for block-out blinds. A total of 2 dnp 100” SuperNova projection screens were installed with projection provided by 2 Panasonic 6000 ANI lumens DLP projectors. www.impactav.com.au www.screentechnics. com.au www.dnp-screens.com

The value of maintenance services Sales: “I am bidding for this project and I feel our maintenance cost is high. Can we lower our maintenance cost so that I can win this project?” Sounds familiar? In my years in the AV industry, I have heard this numerous times from the sales team and it generally ends up with companies compromising on the service aspects. No doubt if there is quality work put in place in the initial phases to ensure that the design and solutions work, systems will be up and running without much need for the maintenance team to keep going to site to rectify issues due to poor installation or inadequate design. Having said that, we cannot defy Murphy’s Law, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” At the InfoComm Rountable held in March in Singapore,Reid Rasmussen, Director of Acclaro Growth Partners (Asia-Pacific) stated that the U.S market is about 55% services and 45% products. For every AV dollar spent, 55% goes to services. In the Asia-Pacific market, it’s 75% products and 25% services.“One of the biggest strategic challenges is that services in Asia are proportionately smaller as compared to other regions in the world. There is commoditization and a focus on price over value,” said Reid. “Customers do not understand AV. They tend to look at the price tags rather than the features or the value. There is a need to address and educate potential customers on this short-term mindset.” Understanding this challenge Jason Lim, CTS, VP of Services at ESCO Pte Ltd, Singapore, urges the industry to re-look at their business plan when it comes to maintenance and service contracts. One of the most frustrating challenges all companies face is equipment failure and without a reliable maintenance program, these mishaps can significantly affect the operations and raise the cost of running their business. We, in the AV industry, spend months of preparation going into a project from programming, designing, constructing, installation to commissioning phases, but how much time are we spending to really look into the service and maintenance program that goes on for years?

So what is maintenance services and why is it so important? It reduces the risk of costly downtime, and through regular preventive maintenance it reduces repair costs and lastly equipment performance will be optimum at all times. Businesses can spend millions of dollars investing in sophisticated and expensive equipment that is expected to last them for years. Some businesses invest in such system just so to reduce cost, an example is investment in Video Conference systems to help reduce travelling cost internally. For the system to meet ROI (return of investment) objectives, proper maintenance is important to prolong the lifespan of those equipment. Many in the AV business often look too fast into cutting the cost of the maintenance rather than understanding the expectations, needs and the sensitivity of their customer’s operations. It is important to “educate” customers about maintenance service and providing them an insight as to how their expectations can be met effectively. Let us look for example two operation scenarios. Operation A has a board room used by the board of directors on a daily basis with a sophisticated AV system and Operation B has a Operation Room that is used during emergency and which has not been used for the past 6 months. The Maintenance team will feel that the board room is important and there should be minimum or no downtime. However from my experience, these board rooms used only by the board of directors often have under-utilized AV system or we can call it white elephants.

This room is mainly used for meetings and presentation of statistics by the management who generally use only laptop/PC to display. How often do you see any director actually present or create their own presentations slide? Based on this usage, you might want to propose loaner for critical equipment like display and switches integrated with the display. Half yearly preventive maintenance should be good enough to keep the equipment in good shape. For supporting hours we can look into a time frame of 8am to 8pm only during business days. The hour before and the two hours after official business hours of 9am to 6pm shoud provide sufficient leeway for staff to carry out maintenance work that is required. When the room is used mainly for meetings, do not expect your maintenance team to walk in during business hour. As for Operation room, how about proposing a 24/7 support with loaner for all the equipment and quarterly preventive maintenance. You may wonder why, since the room has not been used for the past 6 months. We know the room is only used during emergency and we should be thankful that it has not been used, especially if this operation room is used to address natural disasters. Understanding the sensitivity of the operation is very important as that allows you to address the requirement of the business. In this case, none of the equipment can be down and on-site response has to be almost immediate. With an increase in demand by businesses for systems that contribute to most part of their operations, the importance of maintenance services should not be neglected. If we address the costing of maintenance too fast and go low, in the end, the service department in your set-up will not have enough revenue to justify its operation cost. Resources have to be decreased and engineers will not stay long enough due to low increment and remuneration may not be attractive enough to recruit skilled engineers which will result in poor delivery and SLA. No matter how many projects the company can bring in, we are sure to lose these businesses eventually. Maintenance is no longer just a quickfix with businesses pushing their pace in the realm of tough competition. It is important for us, as an industry, to think ahead and provide relevant maintenance service to suit customers unique operations, without compromising on the quality of the service. www.esco.com.sg

HDBaseT™ in the Commercial A/V World Chris Bundy, Marketing Director of Atlona is enthusiastic and impressed with HDBaseT technology. In fact Atlona was one of the first companies to manufacture solutions with HDBaseT connectivity.Though HDBaseT is a young technology as the HDBaseT Alliance was only incorporated in June of 2010, it has made great strides especially in the residential solutions market but Chris feels that it has much to offer to the commercial A/V world as well. HDBaseT™ is quickly changing the A/V world and every industry that it touches, allowing integrators to retrofit existing wire infrastructure to meet their needs. This breakthrough technology aligns with the growing trend of making better use of the resources we have built up over the last 20 years. This trend is becoming increasingly popular in commercial spaces, many of which have used Cat 5 universal twisted pair (UTP) cabling as standard fare in their wiring infrastructure. With so many commercial sites upgrading their networking infrastructure with Cat 6A UTP cabling to accommodate 10GBase-T requirements, commercial A/V integrators have an opportunity to step in using existing Cat 5 infrastructure for advanced media applications ranging from interactive kiosks to video walls. Unlike HDMI, DVI, or other digital standards, HDBaseT is designed to carry uncompressed video along with a host of other signals for audio, network data, and control. While we do not know where this technology will ultimately lead, HDBaseT currently serves as a conduit for HDMI and other formats to extend their transmission lengths. HDMI was designed as a standard for consumer electronics. Its proliferation throughout the commercial market was inevitable; however, its feature set is not geared to suit the demands of most commercial applications. One of the major hurdles for commercial applications is the specified length of HDMI. In the mid-2000s, many manufacturers developed a wide variety of video extenders based on analog predecessors as a quick, albeit somewhat unreliable, solution. Before HDBaseT, most digital video extenders relied on voltage/current translators. These “baluns,” or HDMI-to-UTP converters, turn the transition-minimized differential signaling (TMDS) data of the HDMI port into higher voltage 100-Ω balanced data. This method has its drawbacks, including its susceptibility to electromagnetic (EM) and radio frequency (RF) interference. When extending any high-frequency signal across long,

small-gauge copper conductors, you are bound to pick up a few stray electrons known as stray capacitance. In the consumer world, interference sources are usually obvious, such as power running with or across the video signal pathway. In the commercial world, however, EM and RF interference can come from a wide variety of sources, including florescent lights or the hundreds of thousands of wireless and cellular devices that occupy commercial and urban areas. When HDMI transport systems pick up stray electrons, the effects can range from sparkles in the picture to interruptions in the signal, which eliminate the picture

altogether. This is usually due to the inter-integrated circuit (I2C) used to transmit HDMI’s Display Data Channel (DDC). When enough stray capacitance builds up, it slows the rise time — or time taken for the signal to rise from the low level to the high level and back again. This is essentially how HDMI handles all the communications that occur when negotiating its connection or handshaking between a source and output device. HDBaseT Alliance, the cross-industry alliance formed to provide a technical standard for HDBaseT technology, took a very different approach to video extension, looking toward the computer industry for the solution. HDBaseT technology is inspired by 10GBase-T, utilizing similar but proprietary technology to code signals over UTP. This coding schema, called Pulse Amplitude Modulation, encodes and rapidly pulses

data at varying levels of voltage, and allows HDBaseT technology to encode display data and video over each set of twisted pair conductors. This method is basically utilizing the bandwidth of UTP more effectively and is also less susceptible to EM and RF interference, making it much more effective in commercial spaces. In the commercial world, audio and video are not always enough. Many commercial projects involve interactive media systems that allow users to not only passively consume media, but also provide some level of input. Digital signage is an industry area that is particularly prone to interactivity. From advertising kiosks in malls to informational signage throughout public transportation systems and airports, systems integrators are designing digital signage systems to allow greater input from users. This has changed the market requirements of every component in their system, including the transport technology that they use to get the signal to and from their users. Although HDBaseT was originally designed as a point-to-point solution, it has proven to be an effective means of media and data transport for digital signage due to its ability to not only transmit audio and video at a distance, but also control signals such as RS-232, serial IR, and USB, as well as networked data (100BaseT) and up to 100 W of power. Each signal pathway can be repeated dozens of times, allowing for a large series of mirrored displays across a great distance. This has provided commercial integrators with a singlecable solution that allows them to design even complex kiosk and signage systems with a remote head end. The result is a level of user interaction and control that has previously been either too costly or too complicated to deploy on retrofit projects due to the amount of additional cabling required. HDBaseT is young, even by digital video format standards, and is just starting to stretch its legs in the A/V market. HDBaseT Alliance will continue to evolve the standard to better accommodate commercial applications; however, as it stands, it has proven an effective means of transmitting a suite of digital signals across a commercial environment using a single low-cost and extremely prolific cable. www.atlona.com www.hdbaset.org

Diligent interaction with market key to Kramer’s success in India by Bhavanashi Ramakrishna segment for us - as many as five top global banks who are our customers have come from India. We also have a sizeable presence in corporate AV segment, with some of the top Indian brands having us onboard. TCS is one of our biggest clients in the country. That they all ask us to develop specific products to meet their precise requirement, it’s been a continuous endeavour for us to interact with them; know, analyse, design and develop products to those requirements. We, therefore undertake both generic and focused visits to these markets regularly which, we believe, is imperative.

SIA: What specific products has Kramer been developing in this direction?

Kramer Electronics – one of the most dynamic enterprises in global audiovisual and systems integration domain – is also known for its aggressive initiatives when it comes to product innovations, custom solutions, marketing and industry training. It perhaps, stands apart for its proactive approach in imparting technical expertise to both practicing and aspiring AV professionals. Ram Nahum, Vice-President, Strategic Alliances, and training think tank of the Tel Aviv-headquartered AV switcher MNC, recently made a whirlwind visit to India as part of his periodical market interactions in the country. SIA grabbed a tete-e-tete with Ram, and his Indian deputy Bharath Kumar to know what Kramer and its Indian business is all about. Excerpts:

SIA: What brings you to India, this time? RAM: India has been one of the fastest growing markets in the region, and one of the major markets for Kramer. It’s been particularly conspicuous in the financial

RAM: It’s a little difficult to be precise on this for the simple reason that at Kramer this is a spontaneous process due to which product upgrade, customization, if not new development happens regularly. Which is probably why Kramer releases new products more regularly than most. What is important here is that the product development is thoroughly focused on the market/client requirement. You would, anyway, very soon see a very revolutionary product system with a huge array of installer-friendly, and industry benefiting features. SIA: Having been familiar with the market dynamics here, how do you see the market changing over the years, and particularly in the recent past? RAM: Generically said, Indian market is an altogether different market, even within the region, not to speak of a global comparison. Unlike the other regional markets like Australia within the Asia Pacific or UK in Europe, Indian market is still largely corporate; while the education segment - particularly the e-learning segment - is growing

significantly, the residential segment hasn’t yet taken off as comparable to other geographies. You wouldn’t find an array of LCDs/plasmas, if not large videowalls in the living/drawing rooms, bedrooms, or other interior spaces of residences in India as they are routinely done in other markets. Nevertheless, this is a major market, and growing rather rapidly, and enthusing both product manufacturers and installers to come up with innovative solutions from time to time. However, one big particular change with the Indian market which is both a welcome and a challenge to the solution providers is that the system integrators and end customers have come of age towards sophisticated solutions. From a stage of reluctance towards high-quality, often expensive solutions, they have come to a stage of demanding superior, if not the best available solutions today. They boldly declare today: “We want this; do it for us.” This ups the ante enough to push up the dynamic of sophistication, which is why you see some of the AV installs in the country are simply incredible. While this is seen mostly happening in the financial segment driven by multinational banks, it is also seen gradually expanding to the corporate segment. We fondly hope it expands to other segments as well soon. SIA: Given the positive dynamic, what segment of the market in the region you think as the most promising? RAM: As it is, Kramer is very strongly positioned in the corporate segment. We are initiating some critical measures to get into the academic, particularly the e-learning, segment which, of late, is growing exponentially. The Queensland University in Australia is a case in a point to speak of Kramer’s dynamics in the segment. SIA: What has been your experience with the market in the direction? RAM: Fairly said, It’s been a learning curve for us. That we are in constant interaction with the customers as well as the consulting/integrating communities here, we take their views and ideas, and try to improvise further our offerings in that precise direction. That our R & D is fairly huge with significant time and money spent on developing focused solutions for different markets on time offers a good back-end support.

Systems Integration Asia June - July 2012

SIA: When it comes to technology, the AVSI domain is as rapidly changing as any other field, if not still faster, and the standards are more stringent too. Being a leader in the segment, what is Kramer’s contribution towards upping the standards? RAM: For professionals, Kramer had all along been one of the most aggressive campaigners of sophisticating the industry. It not only initiates its own training programmes on the everexpanding solution portfolios as well as the CTS certifications, but also supports most industry programmes taken up by the representative bodies. You would do well to acknowledge that Kramer had been a regular supporter of all InfoComm International training programmes. We will continue to do that, besides devising more innovative programmes. SIA: It’s a heavily competitive domain out there...How does Kramer manage to maintain its edge? What planning and strengths does it bring to place? RAM: A certain advantage that goes without saying is the ‘brand identity.’That Kramer stands for superior quality, keeps

it atop the chart. What distinguishes Kramer from the competition, is the flexibility that we approach the market with. This is in terms of people, products, price (or sales) and service etc. As I explained earlier, we constantly interact with the market players, understand their needs, and service them in a very flexible fashion paving for a high level of trust, reliability, and relationship. Complementing the approach is our seven-year warranty on all our product offerings. This is, of course, a big plus in the price-sensitive markets like India. SIA: Having been here for so many years, where does Kramer India find itself today? And where does it want to position itself in the near future? RAM: When we began our operations, we had 30 per cent annual growth which was pretty encouraging. Today, Kramer India operates with 70 per cent growth which is all the more encouraging. We do not, however, want to be content with this, and would want to continuously improvise to maintain our leadership. There have admittedly been some testing times but resilience and diligence have stood us strong to forge ahead.

Ram Nahum with Bharath Kumar of Kramer India.

That the market here has been showing some great signs of rising to new highs, we look forward to scale new highs too. www.kramerelectronics.com

“For professionals, Kramer had all along been one of the most aggressive campaigners of sophisticating the industry.” Indeed Kramer Electronics had entered into an agreement with InfoComm International last year to offer InfoComm license courses throughout the world. Under the umbrella of the Kramer Academy™ Kramer has been leveraging the incredible success which was gained with the licensed content from InfoComm in the United States, in order to roll out the curriculum on a global basis. One such content that Kramer has been presenting is the CTS Prep Course. According to Kramer those who have attended the Kramer led CTS Exam Prep class have a very high pass rate on the exam itself. In India, Kramer had set up its Kramer India AV Academy since 2009 featuring various seminars and training programs, Kramer India also conducted its first INS212 Installation Technician Training course in January 2011. This training course has since been held regularly to train the industry in India.
