A sleepy actors’ party is disrupted by an uninvited guest. A drunken Russian officer comes to the bar to sell a canister of gas, but the business transaction quickly turns into a vodka drinking race. The Russian, interested in the striking Milada and entertained by the comedic cowardice of all the men present, wouldn’t leave. The atmosphere thickens and the Russian is having a grand old time. So grand that he pulls out a gun . . . The party, beating to the rhythm of the cosmically psychedelic music by Kill the Dandies!, spins out of control and the participants can’t keep up. The game becomes a trap, heroes become cowards, and cowards become heroes. There is only one way out of the occupied bar: a revolution! After this night, no one will be the same.

Czech Heritage Museum in Temple Quaint museum hides rich history Traveling Soldier Feature • By Brandy Cruz, Sentinel News Editor Fort Hood Sentinel • February 10, 2022
A group of marionettes is on display inside the city of Temple’s Czech Heritage Museum. The “creepy” puppets have been hand-carved with a lot of detail.
There’s a little place you may have never heard of called the Czech Heritage Museum, located a mere four blocks from downtown.
I discovered the museum when I first moved to Central Texas three and a half years ago, but this was my first opportunity to actually go inside and see all it has to offer. I had no idea I was stepping foot into a gold mine of information about Texas and the U.S. military, besides the wealth of information and relics regarding Czechoslovakia.
I was greeted by Kenny Lange, assistant to the director of the museum, who was very knowledgeable about the rich history of the Czech people. He told me all about the Czech and German migration into Texas in the mid-1800s. Of course, they fled their own countries to rid themselves of war, only to be thrown right into the American Civil War.
I thought it was interesting to learn that the first Texan to die during World War I was Czech-born Dominik Naplava, who wanted to do his part and had enlisted at the start of the war. After being rejected by the American military, he went to Canada to enlist. Naplava died on November 12, 1917. According to information in his display case, a bronze memorial tablet commemorating him now stands in front of the Houston City Hall.
There’s a short, but interesting film you can watch that will explain a bit of the Czech history and what brought them to Texas. I found it very informative, and it would be easy for children to follow along.
The next room has a lot of beautiful handmade designs, clothing and even a large display of handmade marionettes. I admit, those things are creepy and should probably be used in a horror movie, if that hasn’t already been done. Despite the creep-factor, I can appreciate the time and patience it must have taken to carve out those wooden puppets.
The museum also has a large library with genealogical information. They said they have helped many Czech people in the area research their family history.
The end of the tour brings you right back around to where you entered. The entire Museum seems larger than it looks from the outside. Before leaving, you can learn about the game of tarock, a card game that dates back to the 1700s. Tarock card playing and lessons take place at 7 p.m., every first and third Tuesday of each month.
The Czech Heritage Museum is located at 119 West French Avenue in Temple. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. For additional information, visit https://czechheritagemuseum.org, or call 254-899-2935. —SPJST—

Czech brass band sets May 25 performance at Lodge 47, Seaton
Pardubická Muzika will perform at SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Star Hall on Wednesday, May 25, 2022. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for the 7 to 9 p.m. performance. The event will be hosted by Lodge 47.
Bring out your family and friends to enjoy traditional Czech brass band music performed by this stellar ensemble of Conservatory of Music players from Pardubice, Czech Republic. The traditional Czech line-up includes two clarinets, two flugelhorns, two bass flugelhorns, two trumpets, trombone, tuba, drums, and two amazing singers!
Brass-band music has a long tradition at the Pardubice Conservatory. It has been a part of the Brass Department for almost as long as the Conservatory has existed, representing it at many events in the region. In 2012, the Banda di Feste ensemble was founded. In the beginning, it focused exclusively on classical Czech brass music. As time went on, it began to play dance and popular music, so there wasn't as much room for brass band music in the band's repertoire anymore. Therefore, Banda di Feste eventually split into two separate ensembles, a big band and a brass band bearing the name of “Pardubická muzika.”
The new band honors the traditional Czech line-up - two clarinets, two flugelhorns, two bass flugelhorns, two trumpets, trombone, tuba, and drums. The band also has two amazing singers. Although the band members are students of classical music, they play brass
