How to Support Grieving Families If You Cannot Attend a Funeral

How can I support the family from a distance?

by Sabrina N. Young, CFSP SPJST Lodge 47, Seaton Member and Owner of Young’s Daughters Funeral Home and Bereavement Center

Funerals often come unexpectedly, and while many try to make these important events—some may not be able to travel or attend at short notice. In these cases, it is still important to acknowledge the loss of an individual and share support. Expressing condolences during such a difficult time can be a tough process for many, but there are many ways to show support aside from attending a funeral service.

Send Flowers and Cards

Flowers are a beautiful and common way to express sympathies for friends and family who have lost a loved one. After selecting a tasteful arrangement of flowers or plants, it is a good idea to have them delivered to the funeral home or place where the service will occur. If the service has passed, sending them di-

Visit the Family

Those who live nearby or are close to the family of the deceased may find that if they cannot attend a funeral, it is a good idea to visit the family’s home. Grieving will typically continue long after the service, and it is always nice to help show support during this process. When visiting, it may be helpful to offer home cooked meals, help with cleaning, watch children or simply have a conversation with those in mourning.

individuals to express thoughts, support and love after one has passed away. Signing a guestbook can be a great way to share your condolences, as loved ones of the deceased will likely look back on these messages time and time again to remember the deceased.

Some memorial sites allow guests to share pictures of the deceased—allowing all to look back on their life with fond memories. Funeral homes often help arrange these services and should be contacted for more information on where to access them.

These baskets are made out of a paper cone and filled with toys and treats. You can do whichever version you’d like, but it’s so much fun so make sure to participate this year. The kids will have such a blast running around the neighborhood and delivering goodies or visiting their friend’s house and surprising them. These are such an easy and fun activity to do that always makes great memories!

What is May Day?

First of all, it always occurs on May 1. In the United States, the tradition involves making May Day baskets to celebrate Spring. It can also include activities like a maypole dance and crowning a queen of May. May baskets are little baskets that are filled with flowers traditionally, but to make them kid friendly, fill them with treats and toys. Make your baskets then leave them

Scissors or exacto knife

Ribbon

Tissue paper

Treats/toys to fill basket

Instructions

If using two sheets of thin lightweight scrapbook paper, lay them back to back before making basket.

Start rolling a cone shape in the middle of one edge. Tape down the inside as you go to hold in place. Then tape the outside corner in place. If needed, add a little tape around the bottom of the cone for extra support - especially if you’re filling it with heavier items.

Cut 6 vertical slits around the top of the cone using scissors or exacto knife. Cut a piece of ribbon about 3 feet long and weave through the six holes.

Tie the two ends together and finish by curling the ribbon or tying in a bow. Fill the bottom of the cone with tissue paper and arrange the treats inside. https://kidsactivityzone.com/diy-may-day-baskets/
