In Memory of Thelma Hrncir

SPJST mourns the loss of Honorary District Seven Director Thelma Hrncir, who passed away on Thursday, November 14, 2024. Sister Hrncir served as SPJST District Seven Director from 1981 to 1992. She was a member of SPJST Lodge 79, Corpus Christi. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sister Hrncir’s family. Her obituary appears here.

Thelma Jean Hrncir, age 92, died peacefully on Thursday, November 14, 2024, with her family at her side.

A celebration of life service was held on Saturday, November 23 at 2 p.m. at Jackson Woods Presbyterian Church in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Thelma was a believer in Christ and a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and piano teacher. She was also SPJST District Seven Director for 12 years.

Thelma was born in Robstown on December 7, 1931, to Anastazie Estelle (Stella) and Rudolph Mrazek. She had four older brothers. Thelma’s 10th birthday celebration on December 7, 1941, was memorable as it was interrupted with the news of Pearl Harbor.

All four of her older brothers served in the military during World War II and fortunately, all returned home safely. She was valedictorian of Robstown High School class of 1949. After attending Delmar College on a music scholarship, Thelma started her career as a lifelong piano teacher. On December 7, 1952, Thelma married Eugene Frank Hrncir after he returned home from the Korean War. The couple had four children - David, Connie, Brent, and Angieand were well-known around the Robstown area. Husband Eugene, better known as Gene, farmed cotton and grain with his brothers on family land northwest of Robstown.

Thelma had a very busy piano teaching career. She ventured into teaching group classes. And, she believed that learning piano could raise a child’s IQ.

Thelma and Gene were active members at First Presbyterian Church of Robstown and Jackson Woods Presbyterian Church. Thelma taught Sunday school and served as an elder of the church.

TA Time for Gratitude and Giving Thanks

his Thanksgiving, as we come together with family and friends, we have the opportunity to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for. While the year has brought its challenges, we can find comfort in the many blessings that surround us—whether it’s the love of family, the joy of good friends, or the support of our SPJST community. Thanksgiving offers a moment to pause and appreciate what truly matters.

At SPJST, we are grateful for our dedicated members and the shared spirit of service and generosity that defines our organization. As we give thanks, let’s also remember those who may need a helping hand. Whether through a kind word, a charitable donation, or offering time to others, we can make a difference in someone else’s life this season.

From our SPJST family to yours, we wish you a warm and joyful Thanksgiving filled with love, laughter, and gratitude.

Thank You, Troy Mills!

We would like to extend our thanks to Troy Mills, owner of Troy’s Auto Care on 57th Street in Temple, for his generous donation to the SPJST Float. Troy graciously donated a tire, which will play an important role in bringing our float to parades across Texas this holiday season. His support is a wonderful example of the community spirit that helps make our events so successful.

Troy’s dedication to the Temple community goes beyond his business,

and we are incredibly grateful for his kindness and willing ness to con tribute. It’s also worth noting that Troy is the son-in-law of the late Ed Mokry, who retired from the SPJST Home Office in 2004 after many years of dedicated service. This connection underscores the deep ties Troy and his family have with SPJST.

In Memory of Thelma Hrncir

Continued from Page 1.

In addition, Thelma led a very active role in SPJST youth work. The “Spejest” was a refurbished old school bus that became the youth club bus. Robstown youth have fond memories of riding that bus to the beach, camps, Astrodome, orchestra, concerts, and Easter sunrise services at the bay. In 1978, Thelma was elected SPJST District Seven Director. She was the first female elected as a district director in the organization.

In 1974, the family moved to the Tuloso Midway area where Thelma continued her piano-teaching career. In August 2000, Thelma and Gene pursued their lifelong dream of living in Estes Park, Colorado. They moved “out west” and enjoyed several years, both participating as volunteer tour guides for the area. In 2003, Thelma felt led to help in the care of a newborn granddaughter in Dyersburg, Tennessee. The couple moved to Dyersburg and became active members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Three years later, the couple returned to Estes Park. On February 1, 2008, Gene died of cancer in Colorado. Thelma returned to Dyersburg, where she lived close to daughter Connie and family. In her retirement, she continued to teach piano, play bridge, avidly read Christian literature, and write many encouraging letters to friends and family.

In October 2020, a stroke slowed Thelma down - though she remained happy and smiling throughout. In January 2024, her family moved Thelma to the SPJST skilled nursing facility in Taylor, Texas. This nursing facility had

a long history with the family as Gene had once been on the board of directors for the S.P.J.S.T. nursing homes for many years. In addition, Thelma’s mother had also been a resident of the Taylor care center. Thelma remained faithful with a beautiful spirit and a beautiful smile as her health declined. She died on November 14, 2024, with her children by her bedside.

She was preceded in death by her spouse of 65 years, Eugene Frank Hrncir; mother Anastazie Estelle Mrazek; father Rudolph Mrazek; brothers Raymond, Henry Joe, Jerome, and Lincoln Delfin; and stillborn grandbaby Casey Joe Smith.

Surviving family includes children and their spouses David Eugene Hrncir and spouse Judy, Constance Diane Smith and spouse Tim, Brent Rudolph Hrncir and spouse Pam, and Angela Jean Henderson and spouse Jason; grandchildren Daniel Brent Hrncir, Cole Timothy Smith and spouse Beth, Cory Eugene Smith, Chelsea Rose Varble and spouse Andrew, Cassidy Noel Smith, Matthew David Hrncir and spouse Cameron, Samuel Jacob Hrncir, Hannah Rose Hrncir, Abigail Grace Hrncir, Elizabeth Faith Hrncir, Taylor Layne Henderson, and Lauryn Grace Henderson; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

The family requests donations be made to Samaritan’s Purse Hurricane Helene Disaster Relief Fund; Jackson Woods Presbyterian Church; or Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements were with SawyerGeorge Funeral Home, Corpus Christi. —SPJST—

It’s Your Life

Give the Gift That Keeps on Giving

Everyone knows Christmas is the season of giving. We give to charity, to our friends, family, co-workers, and even strangers. The list goes on and on. Of all the gift-giving, though, I find that the hardest ones are for our children and grandchildren. They always want the latest and greatest things – electronics, movie characters, dinosaurs, Legos, and more. In just a month, they’ll have moved on to the next shiny object.

I love my grandchildren and I’ll spoil them to no end, but when I look back, I wonder how much money is spent on gifts that don’t last.

What if there was a way to spoil them and still give them something that would grow in value over time?

An annuity.

SPJST has received approval notice from the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) to begin issuing the new SPJST 501(c) Annuity Plan.

3. It grows faster than a savings account, and the gains aren’t taxed until they use it.

4. It helps them build a retirement account early. The longer it grows, the more they will have. It’s never early – or too late – to start saving for retirement.

5. It’s flexible – anyone can deposit into it. Grandma, Grandpa, mom, dad, aunts, uncles, friends . . . It’s an easy gift for those who don’t know what to give.

Here’s how it works: I can take some of the money I would spend on gifts and instead, deposit it into an annuity every year. I know what you’re thinking, “What’s wrong with this guy?” But consider this: if I start an annuity for my grandchildren, every year I can take one gift away and deposit that money into the annuity. They wouldn’t even notice the missing gift, but as they grow older, they’ll notice the gift that keeps growing.

Here are several advantages to starting an annuity for a child:

1. It helps them learn about saving. 2. It’s guaranteed to grow every year, and it can never lose money.

6. Once they have an annuity, they get SPJST member benefits, including scholarship opportunities, summer camp, youth showcases, community service hours for the resume, and more. We often think about savings accounts, gift cards, or cash, but what could be better than an annuity for a child? Many don’t realize that a child can have a non-IRA annuity started at any age. It doesn’t require a job or monthly payments. Once started (as little as $1,250), you can deposit as little as $25 anytime. Even if no more deposits are made, it will still continue to grow. This truly is a gift that just keeps on giving.

“Some gifts are big. Others are small. But the ones that come from the heart are the best gifts of all.” —Tinku Razoria

My door is always open, figuratively, and literally.

Stay blessed,

—SPJST—

“SPJST’s motivation in developing this plan was to provide non-profit organizations with a financially sound alternative to growing their surplus tax-deferred and taking advantage of compounding interest along the way,” says SPJST President/CEO Brian Vanicek.

“Additionally, management wanted to construct the annuity in such a way as to make it easy for non-profit leaders to periodically draw on their account without penalty.”

“Truly, the plan was constructed with the non-profit sector in mind,” says President/CEO Vanicek, acknowledging that many SPJST leaders throughout the state are also actively engaged in leadership positions within their own local non-profit organizations.

What’s

the Difference?

Historically, annuities have been presented in the marketplace primarily as vehicles for individuals planning for retirement or for people who want to keep some of their money out of the market, protected from downside risk. “The fact of the matter is – in most cases – corporations, partnerships, trusts, and other entities can also own an annuity. This process works much like it would with individual ownership,” says President/CEO Vanicek. This summer, SPJST presented its proposal for the 501(c) Plan to the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) for review and approval. The proposal was approved by TDI in September 2024.

Whereas in most cases, the annuitant is also considered to be the owner of the annuity, in the case of the SPJST 501(c) Plan, the ownership is retained by the non-profit organization. Even so, the investment must be based on a living person. While this person – who has been designated by the non-profit organization – does not own the policy outright, the contract is based on their life. “Consequently, the 501(c) Plan guidelines –written in language applicable to nonprofit scenarios – have also been submitted to TDI,” says President/CEO Vanicek.

“As a practical matter, the non-profit organization will want to make sure that the individual who is listed as the annuitant, is a key individual within the framework of the organization. It will be up to the non-profit organization to make that designation and designate changes as deemed necessary,” explains Vice President of Sales and Marketing Delisle Doherty, whose department will market the new program.

“And unlike some insurance companies which offer annuities, there will be no annual fee for administering the 501(c) Plan.

The 501(c) Plan will enable the nonprofit organization to make up to four withdrawals annually for a maximum of 20 percent of its account value after each anniversary date of the certificate, with no penalty. And, as previously noted, should the officer designated as the annuitant change, the non-profit organiza-

tion is requested to notify the SPJST Home Office to make the change.

“To make this change, it will be necessary for the non-profit organization to submit a written request signed by two officers, along with a copy of the nonprofit organization’s minutes, indicating that the change was approved,” says Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doherty. “The withdrawal process will be similar,” he explains, “requiring two officers to submit a written withdrawal request”

How Can We Better Serve You?

SPJST members who hold leadership positions with local non-profit organizations are invited to share information on the new program within those organizations. “And of course – upon request –

we will be happy to provide to interested non-profit organizations with all of the information that they will need in order to make an informed decision with their organization’s surplus funds,” says Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doherty.

“I want to extend that offer to all of our existing SPJST annuitants,” says Vice President of Sales and Marketing Doherty. “Thank you for trusting SPJST with safeguarding your assets. If at any time you have a question about your plan or would like additional information regarding your options, please contact the SPJST Home Office. We look forward to providing you the best service available.”

As we neared the middle of November, our son and daughter-in-law gave Connie and me the best 30th wedding anniversary gift a couple could ever receive: our first grandchild, Leilani, who was born on November 11, a week and a half early. I’m happy to report that Jacob, Makayla, and Leilani are all doing well and adjusting to the new changes. Her birthday falls between her mom and dad’s November birthdays, and we’re excited for many special moments this Christmas and in the years to come.

SPJST Lodge 20, Granger Hall catches the eye of Texas-based photograph

“Photographs like this one of Granger’s 1909 SPJST Hall are among the reasons I don't like Daylight Savings Time. This is around 6:30 p.m. In July, it wouldn’t be possible before well after 9 p.m. With a handy tripod, I’m a big fan of evening light. Downtown Granger’s West Davilla Street is brick. It simply glows at night. These halls are a Czech fraternal group – SPJST –founded in La Grange, Texas, in 1897. The latest figures indicate there are 74 of them in Texas, with almost 40,000 members. If you’re wondering, the letters stand for Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas. In English - Slavonic Benevolent Order of the State of Texas. That’s a mouthful.” Editor’s Note: The photo and caption are from an Instagram post from Andy Sharp. Lodge 81, Needville elects 2025 officers

SPJST Lodge 81, Needville met Sunday, November 17, 2024, at 12 p.m. After a prayer of thanks by President Vincent Newman, everyone enjoyed a chicken-noodle lunch with crackers and plenty of desserts. Thanks to Bradley Stavinoha for picking up the soup from the Needville KC Fundraiser. Thanks also to Willie Mae Kuykendall and her kitchen committee for getting everything ready for us.

At 1 p.m., the youth led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. All officers answered the roll call except Bradley Stavinoha. Bradley had to leave to at-

tend another lodge meeting in Houston.

Since we didn’t have any departed members and no one on the sick list, we went straight to the secretary’s report.

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall read her report, and it was approved as read.

Secretary Willie Mae and President Vincent both went over the treasurer’s report that Bradley Stavinoha gave them.

We didn’t have any old business to discuss so we went to the new business. First on the agenda was the election of officers. After President Vincent Newman was elected by acclamation, the remaining officers were elected the same way. Officers for 2025 are:

President Vincent Newman

Vice President Jeanette Newman

Secretary Willie Mae Kuykendall

Treasurer/Special Funds Chair Bradley Stavinoha

Youth Leader Kristen Jones

Youth Leader Kristen Jones announced various activities and fundraisers the youth will be participating in, which includes a trip to Disneyland in the summer. They are also making strudels for sale in December. They will make Christmas bags for our December meeting for everyone. Their plan is to also go to the SPJST Senior Living in Needville to decorate windows and sidewalks and possibly sing Christmas carols, if permitted.

Door prize winners were Cathy Winsor, Shirley Meyers, Nathan Har-

graves, and Sidney Blinka. Congratulations to our lucky winners!

Christmas Meeting—December 15

For our Christmas meeting on Sunday, December 15, it was decided to have honey-baked ham which Bradley Stavinoha said he will pick up, and Willie Mae Kuykendall said she will get some sausage to go with that. Members, please bring a side dish and/or a dessert.

See you at the next meeting!

Hope for the Kirby Family: A Raffle for Recovery

In the wake of the devastating tornado that struck the Temple area on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, the William and Lisa Kirby family’s home in Zabcikville, Texas, was destroyed. After 27 years of calling the house their home, the Kirbys and five children were left without a roof over their heads. By the grace of God, they were unharmed, but their home and all of their belongings were torn apart, leaving them to rebuild their lives from the ground up.

and what is needed. I am thankful for all of the support coming their way.”

Christina Kirby Carubelli, the daughter of William and Lisa, shared her heartbreaking experience on Facebook after the storm:

“After 27 years of calling these walls home, Wednesday night’s tornado ripped my parents’ house from above them while they were inside. They were untouched and for that I’ll always be grateful, but their home, their comfort, was torn from them. With enormous efforts from family, our most precious memories, pictures, and mementos have been saved; however, the remainder of their necessities were destroyed and all seven of them have been displaced. At this time, we are assessing what was lost

Now, we have the opportunity to support the Kirbys in their journey to rebuild and recover. SPJST Lodge 246, Morgan’s Point is hosting a fundraising raffle to help raise much-needed funds for the Kirby family. The raffle will feature several amazing prizes, and 100 percent of the proceeds will go to assisting the Kirby family with their rebuilding efforts.

Lisa Kirby, who has been a dedicated employee at the SPJST Home Office for 31 years, currently serves as the Executive Assistant to the Controller. She has touched countless lives through her service, and now, it’s our chance to show our appreciation and support for her family as they face this difficult time. The lodge is stepping up to help Lisa and her family as they continue to rebuild their home and their lives following this tragic event.

Villages Resilience Fund donations topping $10,000 mark

Thanks to those of you who gave online through the Facebook account. Your generous gifts plus what we have received through other sources, including the Czech National Celebration held at Pivovar Waco on October 27 are now topping $10,000. The fund drive will continue through the end of the month of November.

Two months have passed now since the Czech Republic experienced one of the most catastrophic flooding events in its modern history. More than 200 rivers swelled beyond their banks, causing

widespread destruction, particularly in the northeastern section of the country.

The Olomouc Region was most severely impacted, where homes and crucial infrastructure were obliterated and approximately 15,000 residents were displaced. Many people lost everything.

The towns and villages nestled in the Jeseníky mountains of the Olomouc Region were hit hardest by the surging waters that transformed once-safe roads into turbulent rivers. In the town of Jeseník -- home to 11,000 residents -- some 1,500 households were adversely affected. Through our ongoing contact with local officials in the Czech Republic, we have identified two pressing projects in need of support: Jeseník Primary School and Primary Art School Jeseník, both of which were severely

damaged in the floods. Your generosity will help rebuild two schools and will also help to restore hope and resilience to a community in crisis. If you have any questions or would like to discuss how you can further assist, please contact me directly at 254-534-2902 or by email at vanicek@spjst.com. Thank you for your kind consideration of this urgent appeal. Together, we can help bring a measure of comfort and support to those facing severe challenges during this difficult time.

Lidice survivor

Jaroslava Skleničková leaves behind a legacy of strength and courage

from Radio Prague International

Authors: David Vaughan and Daniela Lazarová

Listen online at:

Her life story is a story of courage and survival. Jaroslava Skleničková was just 16 when she was sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp by the Nazis with her mother and older sister. Her father was executed, along with the other men from Lidice. Despite this terrible experience, which haunted her for the rest of her life, she found the strength to live a fulfilled life, marry, have children, and help anyone in need. She died on September 27, 2024, at the age of 98, surrounded by her family.

It was a tragedy that resounded the world over. On June 10, 1942, the small central Bohemian village of Lidice was brutally razed to the ground by the Nazis in retaliation for the assassination of Nazi governor Reinhard Heydrich. The men and young boys were rounded up and shot in the village, the women were interned in the concentration camp in Ravensbrück and all but a handful of children selected for Germanization, were gassed. Jaroslava herself survived only because she had just turned 16 and was sent with the adult women. This is how she remembers the hours leading up to the tragedy in her book titled “If I had been a boy, I would have been shot . . . ”

“On Tuesday, 9th of June 1942, at nine o’clock in the evening, the Germans surrounded the whole village. They let everyone enter but no one leave. I was sleeping, aware of nothing, until Mummy woke me up about half past three in the morning, holding my clothes in her hands and urging me to get dressed quickly, that we had to go for two days to the school for interrogation. I got dressed and then, in the kitchen, I saw three soldiers, one of whom spoke Czech. He told my parents to take with them all the money they had, their savings books and jewels. I told myself how polite they were, so perhaps we should not think that they wanted to steal something. Mummy asked what about the animals – for we had a pig, several hens, and ducks. He replied there was no need to worry. The animals would be looked after. So we left the house. At the gate, I stopped with Daddy. He kissed me and said: “God willing, we will see each other again Jaří, only never forget God.” His words were difficult for me to grasp, for we were definitely to return home in two days’ time.”

The reality was terrifyingly different. Her father was one of the 173 men and young boys who were rounded up and shot. All the houses in the village were

set on fire and burnt to the ground. In total, 340 Lidice residents died. After the end of the war, 143 Lidice women and 17 children returned home to face the extent of the disaster. In a 2010 interview for Radio Prague, Jaroslava says it took her a long time to come to terms with the fact that her father was dead.

“I was convinced that my father would survive – a cook, I thought, would always be useful in a camp. He was healthy and strong. I was sure he’d come back. It was only when we arrived back home that relatives told me that he had died. It was awfully difficult getting back to civilian life. In June 1945, I saw the mass grave where my father was bu-

ried, but in August, I was back at work in Prague, and found myself wandering around the streets in Prague, still looking for him. It was awful, the fact that he had gone.”

What she experienced in the camp left its mark on her wellbeing and physical health, but it did not break her. The presence of her mother and sister in the camp helped her to survive. Alongside the cruelty, hunger, and hard work, her book describes the many extraordinary acts of kindness among the prisoners. After the war, she often recalled the strength of that support network in the camp saying that the sacrifice and heroism of the women in the camp later shaped her own life. “Throughout my life, I have tried to behave as honestly, bravely, and selflessly as they did,” she said.

The beauty of Advent in the Czech Republic

December 19, 2022

Youth Journalism International

Editor’s note: This is the first of a twopart series about Christmas traditions in the Czech Republic.

Every country has its own Christmas traditions which is, when you think about it, extraordinary.

In the Czech Republic, Christmastime starts on the first Sunday in December.

The time from that moment on until Christmas Day is called Advent. People decorate their homes and bake sweets

and cookies. There are Christmas trees in almost every village, town, and city.

Smaller cities and towns are also nicely decorated.

As the tradition goes, people light one of the four candles on the Advent wreath so on the fourth Sunday, the last before Christmas, all four of the candles are lit.

I highly recommend that you visit Prague, the Czech capital, at least once during Advent. There are great Christmas markets, probably the biggest in the country, and everything is bright and glamorous.

When I visited December 14, the weather was very winter-tuned – snow and the temperature -5 °C (23 degrees Fahrenheit), which is unusually cold for

the Czech climate.

Advent is probably the most festive time in Czechia throughout the year. The majority of Czechs are not Christians, so everything is more about family, the Christmas atmosphere, and food.

There are a variety of cookies, sweets, and candy, and everybody bakes these according to their own family tradition.

Christmas cookies mark the Advent season in the Czech Republic.

I’ll share much more about Czech festive food and traditions in the second part of this series so look for that next!

This determination remained with her throughout her life. She never hesitated to raise her voice in public and remind people that human dignity, freedom, and democracy must be protected and nurtured.

Even in her old age, she retained an open, critical mind and an excellent memory, willingly participating in talks, giving interviews, and meeting with students, so that her experience and the lessons of the past would not be forgotten. However speaking to Radio Prague’s David Vaughan in 2010, she said it had

been a long time before she was able to talk about it.

“It wasn’t until I was 70 that I was

first able to write down my memories for my children and grandchildren, because when I first came back from the camp I didn’t want to talk about it. But later, when I was 80, I saw how fascism was growing again here in the Czech Republic, and also abroad, in Germany, maybe even England. I felt we had to do something about it. My husband had the idea of publishing my memories as a book.”

Jaroslava published two books “If I had been a boy, I would have been shot . . . ” and “Memories Still Weigh Me Down” which have become bestsellers

Lions are legendary for their strength, power, beauty, and courage. The Bible compares the lion with Jesus, who was born in a manger, suffered on the cross, and conquered the world, similar to a roaring lion taking vengeance on his enemies. The lion’s yellow fur once symbolized the sun, and like most sun symbols, the lion came to represent Christ, the light of the world. Referred to as the king of the beasts, the lion continues as a symbol of might, justice, protection and conquest.

Czech Philharmonic returns to Carnegie Hall for Year of Czech Music finale

from Radio Prague International

The Year of Czech Music will culminate in early December with five concerts at New York’s iconic Carnegie Hall. Returning to this renowned venue for the first time since 2018, the Czech Philharmonic, led by Chief Conductor and Music Director Semyon Bychkov, will present three programmes of Czech music. I spoke with David Mareček, the head of Czech Philharmonic, to find out more about this special event.

An invitation to perform three nights at Carnegie Hall is a privilege granted to only a handful of visiting orchestras. What do you think made it possible for the Czech Philharmonic to earn this opportunity?

“It’s true that it’s a great privilege and I think that what is behind that invitation is the long-term work of my colleagues at the Czech Philharmonic. It all started in 2014 when we were invited for one concert with Jiří Bělohlávek as music director and that one concert was very successful. It was sold out and that led to a re-invitation in 2018 with two concerts, this time already with our current music director Maestro Semyon Bychkov.

“After this small residency we immediately started working on 2024 which is the Year of Czech Music, with many Czech composers’ anniversaries. And also the relationships between Clive Gillinson the CEO of Carnegie Hall and his team and between the team of the Czech Philharmonic have been very good.

“It means that we have been discussing programs and trying to create programs that also sell very well, which applies not only to the repertoire, but also to the choice of soloists. So shortly, it has been

ten years of building the relationship itself and also gradually adding concerts that we perform in New York.”

Can you tell us a bit about what’s planned for each of the three concert programs?

“We call it Czech Music Week in New York, so it’s mostly Czech music, but not exclusively. There is a connection between the three concerts, and this connection is provided by concertos by Antonín Dvořák. So the first night will feature a cello concerto played by Yo-Yo Ma, the second night a violin concerto played by Gil Shaham, and the third night a piano concerto played by Daniil Trifonov. These are soloists that were agreed both by Carnegie Hall and us.

“And in the second part of each program, there will be a major work connected to the Czech Philharmonic. The first night will feature My Country by Smetana, exactly half of it, the first three

Monday, November 25, 2024 25 tone poems Vyšehrad, Vltava and Šárka. The second night will feature the Mahler Symphony No. 5. Of course Mahler is an Austrian composer, who was born in a small town that is now part of the Czech Republic, and we consider Mahler one of our main composers. And in Mahler's music, there are influences of Austrian, German, Jewish, Czech, and other types of Central European music.

“And the third night will feature the Glagolitic Mass by Leoš Janáček, and there the Czech Philharmonic will be joined by four soloists, and by the Prague Philharmonic Choir, that is also part of our organization. And the choir will also perform a separate concert on the 6th of December, with Czech choral works. And on top of this, they will sing on the 4th of December at 2 p.m. on Times Square, a short 20-minute program for the general public.”
