They say hindsight is 20/20, so as far as beach house design trends are concerned, 2021 is a year that is looking towards a beautifully styled future.

Mixing Styles

2021 is all about mixing which means you get to pick and choose all the best bits from all the different coastal styles. It gathers the iconic moments from seaside coastal, surf shack, Hamptons, nautical and tropical schemes and even modern boho.

Coastal Colours

Dulux’s colour of the year, Tranquil Dawn is a muted green hue is that is meant as a nod to elements of the natural landscape. A new decade heralds a new dawn and the hazy pale green tones of Tranquil Dawn are calming and comforting as a beach sunrise. Dusky blues and subtle champagne hues are also in our colour palette this year.

Bohemian Whites

This one will come as no surprise as the boho trend has made such a huge comeback in interiors. All-white bohemian style is huge right now and mixed with gorgeous rustic moments that make them a sublime choice for any modern beach house. The presence of wicker, jute and rattan will become commonplace, and rich textural expression will be the headline story.

The Tropical Island

Bird motifs will flutter everywhere in 2021 and tropical palm leaves, beautiful botanicals and patterns remain in style. Creating your own island paradise with soft neutrals and pops of island colour are bang on trend. 12

Seashells by the Seashore

Shell motifs were huge back in the ‘20s and saw a resurgence in the ‘80s before going out to sea again. But, our seafaring friend, the scallop-shaped shell has come ashore again and it decorates everything from plush headboards to dishes, throw pillows and eclectic vintage pieces.

Originality Matters

In 2021, a return to seeking out and investing in craftsmanship and originality in design and art will be important. Knowing where a piece was made, by who and the stories that surround that object make our décor decisions unique. Hermanus is brimming with talented, up-and-coming artists and craftspeople. Let’s support them.

Make it Sustainable

Sustainability is at the heart of anything that is being manufactured today. Recycling, repurposing, reinventing and reusing are all things that consumers are beginning to consider as fundamental when designing houses today. Think reclaimed shipwreck pieces and driftwood décor. The contemporary beach house draws from rich organic textures and from the natural beauty of its surroundings.
