debates surrounding the authenticity of the paranormal events that unfolded within the walls of the house at 112 Ocean Avenue. Skeptics have raised valid points regarding inconsistencies in the accounts provided by the Lutz family, who lived in the house after the tragic DeFeo murders. These skeptics suggest that financial motivations may have influenced the family’s decision to share their experiences, potentially leading them to embellish the haunting narrative for profit. The scrutiny directed toward the Lutz family’s claims highlights the tension between the allure of supernatural horror and the

need for verifiable evidence in a world fascinated by the unexplained. Critics have pointed out various elements that appear inconsistent within the accounts of the Lutz family’s experiences. These inconsistencies range from discrepancies in the timeline of events to the nature of the reported phenomena. Some skeptics

argue that the sheer intensity and frequency of the paranormal incidents described in the accounts strain credulity. The financial aspect of the controversy stems from the fact that the Lutz family’s story led to books, movies, and other commercial ventures that capitalized on the horror narrative. While this doesn’t automatically

invalidate their claims, it raises questions about the motivations behind sharing their experiences with the world. Despite the doubts and debates, the impact of The Amityville Horror on pop culture remains undeniable. The story’s fusion of reallife horror and supernatural intrigue has captivated audiences for decades,

making it a cornerstone of the horror genre. The tale’s resonance extends beyond the question of its authenticity, transcending into the realm of urban legends and shared cultural experiences. The power of The Amityville Horror lies not only in its ability to evoke fear and fascination but also in its influence on subsequent works of

fiction, film adaptations, and discussions about the paranormal. In the end, the debates surrounding The Amityville Horror serve as a testament to the enigmatic nature of the supernatural and humanity’s desire to explore the unknown. Whether one believes in the authenticity of the events or views them as a

blend of fact and fiction, the tale’s impact on pop culture and its enduring popularity cannot be denied. As long as the house at 112 Ocean Avenue stands as a symbol of both horror and intrigue, the legacy of The Amityville Horror will continue to shape conversations about the paranormal and the boundaries of belief.

THE HORROR ON-SCREEN

“The Amityville Horror” emerged from the depths of real-life horror to captivate audiences in the form of cinematic adaptations. The original 1979 film and its subsequent 2005 remake stand as testaments to the enduring fascination with the unsettling events that transpired within the walls of the infamous house at 112 Ocean Avenue. These movies demonstrated the power of storytelling to creatively transform reallife incidents into the realm of supernatural horror, effectively blurring the lines between reality and the inexplicable. The 1979 adaptation of “The Amityville Horror” marked the beginning of a cinematic journey that would thrill and terrify viewers for years to come. Directed by Stuart Rosenberg, the film took liberties with the actual events, emphasizing supernatural elements to heighten the sense of dread and fear. While the movie deviated from the exact details of the Lutz family’s experiences, it effectively captured the eerie atmosphere and inexplicable occurrences that had become synonymous with the Amityville house. This cinematic representation of the haunted house introduced audiences to a

potent blend of real-world horror and supernatural suspense, sparking intrigue among those unfamiliar with the story’s origins. In 2005, a remake of the film offered a contemporary take on the tale, reaffirming its place in popular culture. Directed by Andrew Douglas, the remake featured updated visuals and modern filmmaking techniques while staying true to the core narrative. This adaptation not only catered to new generations of horror enthusiasts but also appealed to those who had been captivated by the original film. The movies’ ability to encapsulate the unsettling nature of the events in the Amityville house and weave them into a compelling narrative showcases the enduring power of this chilling story, turning a reallife horror into a source of entertainment that resonates across different eras.

FILMING OF THE MOVIE

The production of the original “The Amityville Horror” movie took a chilling turn as the crew encountered a series of eerie incidents that some believed to be linked to the infamous “Amityville Curse.” Throughout filming, a sense of unease pervaded the set, with strange occurrences fueling the perception that the house’s haunting reputation

|Most Haunted Locations 2023

extended beyond the realm of fiction. Crew members reported inexplicable cold temperatures, technical glitches, and unsettling feelings that amplified the eerie atmosphere, mirroring the inexplicable events depicted in the film. These occurrences gave rise to speculation that the unsettling aura of the Amityville house had left its mark on the production, blurring the lines between reality and fiction in a manner reminiscent of the source material. Notably, James Brolin, the actor who portrayed George Lutz in the 1979 film, added a chilling layer of authenticity to the eerie atmosphere. In his pursuit of accurately portraying the character and the events, Brolin delved into the reallife occurrences that had transpired within the house at 112 Ocean Avenue. As he embarked on this research journey, he claimed to have experienced strange phenomena firsthand. Brolin’s accounts of encountering unexplained occurrences while immersing himself in the story he was portraying added an uncanny dimension to his performance. This convergence of on-set oddities and Brolin’s personal experiences further solidified the notion that the line between the fictional portrayal and the reality of the Amityville haunting was remarkably thin.

APPEALING TO DIE-HARD FANS

Die-hard comic book and sci-fi enthusiasts find themselves drawn to the allure of The Amityville Horror due to its unique amalgamation of supernatural intrigue and real-world horror. The genre-bending appeal of this tale resonates deeply with individuals who immerse themselves in fantastical realms and speculative fiction. For these enthusiasts, The Amityville Horror serves as a bridge between the supernatural and the tangible, mirroring the elements they cherish in fictional worlds. The house’s transformation from an ordinary abode into a breeding ground for eerie phenomena captures the essence of their favorite stories, where reality and the unexplained seamlessly intertwine to create an experience both thrilling and unsettling. The enigmatic history of the house at 112 Ocean Avenue evokes a sense of wonder and curiosity among die-hard fans. Much like the intricate lore woven into comic books and sci-fi narratives, The Amityville Horror beckons its audience to explore its mysteries and unravel the layers of its haunting legacy. The notion of a house itself being a character, concealing secrets and embodying a

chilling persona, mirrors the depth and complexity often found in beloved fictional worlds. For these enthusiasts, the blurred line between reality and the unexplained aligns with the essence of their chosen genres, where imagination has the power to transcend conventional boundaries.

HISTORICAL FACTS

The chilling narrative of The Amityville Horror takes its foundation from a tangible location - the ominous house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. This house, built during the 1920s, initially exuded an unassuming charm with its Dutch Colonial Revival-style architecture. However, it was destined to be forever etched into history as the epicenter of a terrifying legend that captivated the world. This unassuming structure’s transformation from a quaint abode to a source of haunting stories serves as a reminder that even the most innocuous surroundings can conceal unimaginable secrets and horrors. The historical significance of the house at 112 Ocean Avenue is undeniable. The Dutch Colonial Revival-style architecture prevalent in the early 20th century lent a distinctive character to the house. This architectural style, characterized by gambrel roofs, dormer windows, and symmetrical facades,

reflects the design trends of its era. Little did the builders know that their creation would transcend architectural relevance to become a prominent figure in the realm of supernatural tales. The house’s incorporation of these architectural elements, harkening back to a different time, adds an extra layer of intrigue for those who explore its eerie history. As a oncecharming dwelling turned symbol of unexplained phenomena, 112 Ocean Avenue has ingrained itself into the collective consciousness as a real-life house of horrors.

FAMOUS HAUNTS, SUICIDES, AND MURDERS

The dark history of the house at 112 Ocean Avenue is inextricably linked to the horrific event that unfolded within its walls in November 1974. Ronald DeFeo Jr.’s murder of six members of his family sent shockwaves through the community, forever associating the house with a chilling tragedy. Although the DeFeo murders are not directly connected to the subsequent paranormal events, they cast a shadow over the house’s history, serving as a haunting backdrop that adds an eerie layer to the unfolding narrative of The Amityville Horror.

The Lutz family, who purchased the house after the DeFeo murders, encountered an entirely different form of terror. Mere weeks after moving in, they abruptly fled the premises, citing a barrage of paranormal experiences that shook their very foundations. Reports of cold spots, levitating objects, and unsettling voices were just a few of the unnerving occurrences they claimed to have endured during their brief stay. The Lutz family’s swift departure resonated with the notion that the house itself held a malevolent presence, capable of manifesting inexplicable and terrifying phenomena. The traumatic history of the DeFeo murders, coupled with the Lutz family’s harrowing experiences, forged a connection between the realworld horror of the past and the supernatural terrors of the present. The juxtaposition of the DeFeo murders and the subsequent paranormal experiences highlights the unsettling duality that defines the house’s legacy. The violent tragedy perpetrated by Ronald DeFeo Jr. and the inexplicable encounters described by the Lutz family create an eerie tapestry of horror, where the boundaries between the rational and the otherworldly blur. This complex narrative serves as a reminder that the most haunting stories often emerge from the convergence of real-world darkness and supernatural intrigue, captivating the

imagination and chilling the spine.

CURRENT STATUS

The original house at 112 Ocean Avenue, which once stood as the eerie epicenter of The Amityville Horror, has undergone significant transformations since its infamous days. Renovations and alterations to its appearance have played a pivotal role in distancing the house from its chilling legacy. One noticeable change involved the removal of its distinctive “eye” windows, a feature that had become synonymous with the house due to its portrayal in the movie adaptations. This alteration not only served to modernize the house’s facade but also marked a deliberate effort to downplay its association with the paranormal, a choice that highlights the enduring impact of the story’s popularity on the property’s perception. Following the sensational attention drawn to the house due to the haunting narrative, subsequent owners faced the challenge of living in a location steeped in macabre history. As a result, the house changed ownership multiple times, with each new occupant attempting to reshape its image. The exterior modifications carried out by these owners reflect a desire to minimize unwanted attention and to carve a new identity for the house beyond its dark reputation.

|Most Haunted Locations 2023

The decision to alter the appearance of the house underscores the power of the horror tale’s influence on the real estate market, revealing how the narrative’s allure continues to shape the destiny of the very structure that once held its ominous secrets. The transformations that the house at 112 Ocean Avenue has undergone serve as a testament to the way in which a gripping story can impact not only the fictional world but also the tangible reality it touches. By shedding its former features and altering its exterior, the house attempts to break free from its association with the supernatural and reassert its place within the mundane world. Yet, no matter the changes, the legacy of The Amityville Horror lingers, a reminder of the enduring power of horror narratives to permeate every corner of our lives.

CONCLUSION

As the sun sets over Amityville, the legend of The Amityville Horror continues to cast a shadow over the quaint town. This enduring story’s impact on pop culture resonates with comic book and scifi enthusiasts, blending elements of the supernatural with the tangible. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a newcomer to the tale, the real-life mystery behind The Amityville Horror will leave you questioning the boundaries between the known and the unexplained.

THE MYERS FAMILY HOME Halloween (1978)

Location: Haddonfield, IL (Fictional) | South Pasadena, CA, USA (Real) The Scene: 17 year old Laurie Strode dutifully drops off a key at an old house her father is trying to sell, which has been abandoned for years. Escaped mental patient Michael Myers sees her through the window and becomes obsessed, kicking off the entire Halloween franchise. The History: When Hollywood searches for a nice midwestern town location for filming, they often look to Pasadena, California for a stand in. With limited palm trees and midwestern home aesthetics, most of your favorite “midwestern” locations are filmed there. When they were searching for a location to film John Carpenter’s 1978 classic Halloween, they had one word on their mind - cheap. The now iconic house was an abandoned property that had fallen into disrepair. It was owned by a church, and for a pittance, they were allowed to do whatever they wanted with the house for filming. The original home was built in 1888, and in its original state did not contain bathrooms, or even a kitchen. That had to be built specifically

for the movie. The later scenes of the film were actually filmed first, as the house was already in a run-down state. They then cleaned up and repainted the house for its earlier scenes of young Michael murdering his sister. And there it sat after filming, wasting away again as another abandoned home in the neighborhood. In 1987, the house, and the entire neighborhood surrounding it was scheduled for demolition to make way for a new hospital. David Margrave, having watched the bulldozer demolish all the other houses in the area, saw that it was on its way to clear the Myer’s home. He asked the bulldozer operator to stop, and he went searching for the current owner of the home. He bought the home for only $1, but the land still needed to be cleared for the hospital. He hired a crew to move the home from the property, but having no land of his own to move the house to, asked them to set it on some railroad property just around the corner. Luckily the railroad company and the town recognized the historical importance of the home and allowed it to stay. The town named it

“The Century House” and gave it the designation of “Landmark #34” in the local historical building registry. Historians have even gone as far as naming it the city’s first duplex and “possibly the city’s oldest surviving frame residence.” Today, the house still stands, but it is now a private office building. Many tenants have come and gone, from chiropractors to massage therapists, but the house is not home to any families: murderous or otherwise. Just don’t try to enter uninvited, and keep the pictures in the parking lot, as the sign says in the window. But if you are in the area, some of the other locations from the film are in the local area. This includes Nichol’s hardware store, which is just across the street. This is the same hardware store where Michael Myers stole his iconic white Shatner mask. If the California location is too far for you to visit, you may also consider The Myers House - North Carolina. A horror fan’s replica Myers home built in the rural farmlands of North Carolina. There are some events and tours available, but do not show up unannounced.

PALAZZO VECCHIO Hannibal (2001)

Location: Piazza della Signoria, Florence, Italy. The Scene: Inspector Pazzi discovers Hannibal Lecter posing as an art historian in Florence, Italy after his escape from Baltimore ten years earlier. Ignoring warnings from Clarice Starling, and with golden lira signs in his eyes, decides to confront the cannibal alone. Hannibal, knowing that his cover has been blown, and always a step ahead, knocks out and hangs the Inspector from the balcony, asking the age old question before he pushes him to his death: “Bowels in or bowels out?” The History: The Palazzo Vecchio has a long and storied history spanning at least four different countries, many ruling families, monarchs, clergy, and bold artistic claims. In 1299, Florence was its own republic, separate from Italy. When Florence was rising to prominence, the people decided that they needed a new seat of power that matched their city. A palace that was rugged and strong, but with plenty of room to display their artistic endeavors inside. In an age of reason and in the heart of the renaissance, Florence was where many of the famous artists, politicians, and of course, bankers resided. The mighty house of Medici decided to move their headquarters there

after their grip on the city became strong enough to flex it directly. Although they never controlled Florence directly, they produced some political powerhouses of the 15th through 18th centuries. Popes, Monarchs, Cardinals, and Dukes were plentiful in their family tree and their power was unquestioned. Florence became part of the much larger kingdom of Tuscany soon enough, and the Medicis took direct control and ruled as a Grand Duchy. Their line eventually fell in 1737 with the death of their last Duke, but their claims to fame were many. They asserted that they were responsible for the creation of the piano and opera, financed the construction of St Peter’s Basilica and the Cathedral of Florence. They also claimed to be patrons of many great artists of the time including Michelangelo, Leonardo DaVinci, Raphael, Machiavelli, Galileo, and Botticelli. Some of these claims may indeed be true, as there is direct evidence that both Michelangelo and DaVinci had conceptualized and perhaps even started giant battle paintings inside the Palazzo. Michelangelo would be called away to work on a little project called the Sistine Chapel, and DaVinci would abandon his work after an accident with wax-based

paint melting when it wasn’t drying fast enough. There are some claims that this work was covered instead of being painted over by his replacement, but no evidence of this has been substantiated. The palace continued to be the local seat of power until 1865, when it became the temporary capital for the entire kingdom of Italy. This only lasted a short time, until 1871. Since then it has remained the office of the mayor and the meeting place for the city council of Florence. It is largely a museum now, but even in the present day, the mayor and city council still hold offices there, and it remains a true seat of power. It even contains a copy of the David statue by Michelangelo in the courtyard outside. The scene in which poor Inspector Pazzi meets his end, Hannibal Lecter describes a plot in which his ancestor Franceso Pazzi was publicly hanged from the balcony as punishment for an assassination attempt. This story is indeed mostly true. Two men, Francesco Pazzi being one of them, attacked and stabbed Giuliano Medici 19 times, killing him, and seriously wounding his brother Lorenzo. The true story has not Francesco being hanged from the balcony, but his brother Salviati Pazzi, who was also involved in the plot.

ALL SAINTS CHURCH The Omen (1976)

Location: All Saints Fulham, Pryors Bank, Bishops Park, London, UK. The Scene: Father Brennan, clutching a crucifix, warns Damien’s father Robert Thorn that his son is indeed the antichrist. After killing his entire family and inheriting all of their wealth and power, Satan himself will give the boy the power to destroy the world. Robert dismisses these claims and saunters away, but Father Brennan is confident that they will meet in hell soon enough. A freak storm rolls in, with gale force winds and lightning strikes. After trees and even a fence are struck and burst into flames, the good father runs back to his nearby church, but is denied entry, as the doors will not open. Hearing another crash, Father Brennan looks up and sees that the lightning rod on top of the tallest bell tower has broken loose and rockets down to impale him. The History: The All Saints Church in Bishops park, London, has been around for a very long time. The very first records indicate that there was a church in this location date back to 1154, revealing that the church located here was involved with a local tithing dispute. That means there has been a

church on this site for over 900 years. The tower, the tallest part of the church, was built in the mid 15th century, and has stood until the present day. It is not known exactly what the name of the church was before that point, but would thereafter be named the All Saints Church. The rest of the church has been remodeled several times, the most recent being during the Victorian era, sometime around 1880. The church is still in use today, and services are still held there on a daily schedule. The church is also right next door to Fulham palace, a headquarters for the bishops in London, and many prominent members of that group are buried there. This is also the site where the notorious bishop Edmund ‘Bloody’ Bonner reportedly tortured over three hundred Protestant “Heretics” during the latter half of the 16th century. Under the rule of Queen Mary I, he imprisoned, tortured, and interrogated his prisoners in a hidden dungeon that was accessed through a secret door under the stairs. It was also reported that there were multiple passages and tunnels that led to various places

around London, and that all of these were lined with rotting and decaying skeletons. The Baron’s ghost has continued to be sighted around the palace grounds, most recently in 2019. He doesn’t just stay in one spot either, and is sometimes seen wandering the streets in a ghostly black carriage with horses so dark that they are black voids that absorb light. His zealotry was unmatched and his cruelty as chaplain to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey even supposedly reached all the way to the ears of Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell. When Elizabeth I came to power, the Bloody Bishop was banished and clapped in irons, soon after being buried in an unmarked grave. The lightning rod scene itself was filmed with a very simple technique. They simply slid the hollowed out rod along a wire, which then embedded itself into the ground. Father Brennan then stood several feet in front of the rod and awkwardly froze in place, giving the illusion of being impaled. I’m sure the doctor regenerated soon after and became his third incarnation.

LISTEN TO THEM. CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT, such music they make. Dracula, horror icon, has been in film or tv for nearly 100 years. Bram Stoker wrote his book in 1897, changing the way the world saw vampires, taking them out of the old folklore and into the rest of the world. Every tale or story has some nugget of truth, and Dracula is no exception. Based on Vlad the Impaler, truth is stranger than fiction as Vlad was more of a monster than Dracula ever could be.

SYNOPSIS:

We might as well acknowledge the elephant in the room with the original 1931 film starring Bela Lugosi: Renfield never went to Dracula’s castle. It was Jonathan Harker that went. There have been multiple movies about Dracula in the nearly 100 years of movies, but in the novel, Renfield was already

30 I

|Most Haunted Locations 2023

in a sanatorium in England before Dracula got to England. Anyway, in the original movie, Renfield goes to Transylvania as a broker in the purchase of Carfax Abbey. In the village outside the castle, Renfield is warned by the locals to not go to the castle at night, and there is a legend of vampires in or around the castle. Renfield is offered to stay at the local inn for the night, but he does not buy into the superstition and insists that he travels to the castle immediately. The coach driver is alluded to being Dracula in disguise and as Renfield sticks his head out of the window to ask the driver to slow down, he sees a bat flying above the horses. Once inside the castle, Renfield is welcomed by the count himself who has very odd mannerisms and behavior. Here we get

some business matters at hand, the purchase of Carfax Abbey in England. Renfield cuts himself on a piece of paper and bleeds. Dracula seems to have a hard time controlling himself around the sight of blood. While Renfield is eating and drinking, we get the classic line of “ I don’t drink… Wine”. Later that evening, Dracula insists that Renfield stay the night as it is late, and then proceeds to hypnotize Renfield into opening his window where he is promptly surrounded by Dracula’s brides. Dracula waves them away and then attacks Renfield.

Next we have another difference in that the boat they travel to England in is called the Vesta and not the Demeter. On the trip, Dracula eventually kills all the crew and Renfield is driven insane. The boat washed ashore and only Renfield is found to be alive and given his condition he is brought to Dr Seward’s sanatorium

while it happens to be next to Carfax Abbey. The next night we are introduced to the remaining cast of Jonathan Harker, Mina, Lucy and Dr Steward as Dracula joins them in the balcony for a play. They discuss him being neighbors. We get the allure of Dracula as Lucy is mesmerized by the Count. After the play, Dracula enters Lucy’s room and feeds on her. Lucy becomes very ill and they try blood transfusions to help her condition, but to no avail, Lucy dies the next day. We go back to Renfield and his meeting with Dr Steward and we learn that Renfield is eating insects and spiders to get their “lives”. He begs Dr Steward to send him away as he is afraid that his cries in the night might disturb Mina. A doctor is in town by the name of Van Helsing, who seems to have knowledge about vampires. He proceeds to show Renfield Wolfsbane, which is supposed to protect those from vampires and Renfield recoils from it, adding to the list of odd occurrences that lead Van Helsing to believe a vampire is around. Next Dracula starts to go after Mina, who survives but hides bite marks on her neck. Van Helsing puts a cross in her hand, which burns her causing her to pass out. Dracula makes a visit to check on Mina, and there Van Helsing shows everyone that Dracula has no reflection in a mirror, another staple of vampire lore. Most Haunted Locations 2023|

Mina leaves her room again and is attacked by Dracula. Newspapers report that a woman is biting children in the park and it is revealed that Lucy has risen from the grave. Harker and Van Helsing visit Lucy and drive a stake into her to stop her. In order to protect Mina from suffering the same fate as Lucy, Van Helsing protects her by putting Wolfsbane around her neck and orders the maid to not let her take it off. Renfield escapes from his cell but he invites Dracula in by promising Renfield more lives in the forms of rats. Dracula then proceeds to discuss with Seward and Van Helsing that Mina is his. Van Helsing and Dracula exchange words, and when Van Helsing is failed to be hypnotized, he pulls out a cross which causes Dracula to hastily retreat. Mina confesses to Jonathan that she does not love him anymore and is a child of the night and attacks Jonathan, but is stopped by Van Helsing and Steward. Dracula comes back one last time, and hypnotizes the maid to remove the Wolfsbane from Mina’s neck and open the window. As he is at Carfax Abbey, he is convinced that it is Renfield’s fault he was found out and kills him. DUring the day, Van Helsing and Harker hunt down Dracula. There he drives a stake into Dracula’s heart, killing him and returning Mina to normal.

DIFFERENCE IN MEDIA:

Since there have been many versions throughout the years after the novel came out, however there have been a number of mainstays that are consistent across most mediums. One big thing from the novel is the transformation into a bat. However, Dracula has been known to transform into a wolf, as well as fog. These other options do not appear as often but were seen in the 3 part Netflix series Dracula. In the novel, Wolfsbane was used as a ward against vampires, but garlic has become the more known protection. Since the novel and first movie, crosses have been a staple in the lore that Dracula has an aversion to them. Also the idea that a vampire does not show up in a mirror has been there, is a common trope. The most common reason is that they are soulless and mirrors are windows into the soul, therefore vampires do not show up in them. In addition, the ability to hypnotize has been there since the beginning, as well as not being able to be in the sunlight. A lot of stories and movies with Dracula combine the character of Renfield and Harker quite often. It is Harker who goes to the castle, and Renfield is in the sanatorium. The 1931 movie changed this and most media since then have

followed suit. Usually Lucy and Mina stay the same, and Van Helsing is still knowledgeable in the lore of the vampire. Van Helsing has become the most well known adversary of Dracula The voice of Dracula was greatly influenced by the natural accent of Bela Lugosi. His voice is used when impersonating Dracula in many forms of movie and TV shows. Not all have it, but it has become a trope of Dracula himself. In the newest movie about Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, we get to see what happens on the trip, which was only a brief section of the book from the Captain’s Log. As movies have changed, so has the lore. It used to be that only werewolves were affected by silver, but in some cases vampires are as well. Other additions have included them not being able to cross running water, having the need to count things like rice if thrown onto the count. Even how to become a vampire differs across media. One is that you must be bitten and then drink the blood of the vampire that bit you while in other cases, you are drained of all your blood, die, and rise up as a vampire. One major change to the lore that we are seeing about 25 years later is the idea of a familiar. While usually an animal, and reserved for witches and warlocks, Blade changed that. It has become

almost a staple that Renfield is a familiar and we see this continue in movies and TV shows such as What We Do in the Shadows. Regardless of any changes, whether it be that vampires sparkle in the daylight or die, it seems that stories of vampires and Dracula will continue.

HISTORY:

Dracula’s Castle, also known as Bran Castle, is located in Bran near Brasov Transylvania, which is found in Romania. Stoker depicted Dracula’s castle as a crumbling structure, but in description and media, bears little to no resemblance to Vlad’s Castle itself. Once a fortress for the now legendary conqueror, the castle is now a museum and tourist destination. The castle was not built for Vlad himself, but was built in 1211 as a fortress to protect the Southeastern border of Transylvania and took over 160 years to become the castle that we know today. It was not until 1459 that Vlad got control of the fortress. This is when his reign of terror really began. Vlad was merciless in his battle. He would impale his enemies onto pikes, giving him the nickname Vlad the Impaler. He would take the villagers of towns he plundered and impale them for everyone to see. Vlad was of the clan Dracul,

34 I

|Most Haunted Locations 2023

which means Order of the Dragon. This became the basis of the name Dracula, which also means devil in Romanian. His name became notorious for being a ruthless invader and soon the rumors spread. Even in the most modern takes of Dracula, in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, dragon imagery was used as a mark of Dracula’s clan. After Vlad’s reign, the castle exchanged hands over the centuries. Eventually in 1987, the castle got restoration work done and it took 6 years. This is when it became a museum and tourism came. Finally in 2009, after a legal battle, Bran’s Castle was returned to the rightful heirs. There are similarities between Bran’s Castle and Dracula’s Castle in Stoker’s novel. Both are described as big castles with looming towers, they stand on top of a rocky precipice, and are known for the views of the surrounding area. There are some conflicting ideas that Vlad may never have actually lived in the castle and Stoker may not have even known or visited Bran’s Castle. In 1931’s Dracula, the castle was built on a soundstage and the views of the castle were painted as a backdrop. For Stoker never having visited or even known about Bran’s castle, some say that the resemblance is uncanny.

Dracula’s castle changed over the near 100 years of film and TV. The description used in the novel and the old Universal movies were even used in other media such as in video games such as the Castlevania series. Stories of Vlad came even during his reign. Many believe that his violence was wildly exaggerated by the Saxons. Regardless, Stoker used these stories and created one of the first monsters in Dracula. Before Stoker’s book, vampires and Dracula did not go together. Stoker took many tales and folklore and combined them with one of the most ruthless invaders in the area. Nowadays, it is hard to separate Vlad aka Dracula from vampires. There never was any mention of Vlad himself in the book, however movies such as 1992’s Bram Stokers Dracula went into his past and merged Vlad with Dracula. And just as iconic as Dracula is, his castle has become a mainstay in horror, even entering all stages of media including children’s shows. For many, a trip to Bran’s Castle is a great combination of history and horror. The allure of Dracula and becoming a vampire is still seen to this day, but we must try to remember the horrible history behind Dracula to fully understand the legacy.

‘‘EVERY TOWN HAS AN ELM STREET’’ - WES CRAVEN In the small little town in Springwood Ohio, sits a house almost as iconic as the characters of Nancy and Freddy on 1428 Elm Street. This home seems to be every town’s dream home: multiple bathrooms and bedrooms, great square footage, and even a perfect place for the white picket fence. The one catch, a guy with blades on his fingers might invade your dreams.

SYNOPSIS

The original A Nightmare on Elm Street came out in 1984. It centers around Nancy Thompson and her group of friends, as they try to survive their dreams. The movie begins with Tina being chased in a boiler room by a horribly burnt man with a glove that has 4 blades attached to it. She is taunted and mocked by the burnt man and he seemingly slashes at her. She then wakes up in a cold sweat and her mother points out that she has slashes in her nightgown. Tina goes to school the next day and she begins to recount the dream she had the night before with her best friend Nancy and Nancy’s boyfriend Glen. When Tina starts to describe the man in

her dreams, the three of them realize that they all had the dream about the burnt man with blades for fingers. Tina is afraid, so she convinces Nancy to stay the night while her mother is out of town. Glen is also staying the night there. The sleepover is interrupted by Tin’a boyfriend Rod. Later that evening, Tina falls asleep and has a nightmare that Freddy is chasing her again. This time around, we see Rod’s perspective as Tina is getting dragged along the walls and ceiling of the room while getting slashed to death by an unseen force. She falls to the bed, dead. Nancy and Glen go to investigate the noise and see that Tina is dead and that Rod has fled the bedroom. The next day as Nancy is walking to school, she is taken aside by Rod, who is still barefoot and hiding from the night before. He tells her what happened and that Nancy has to believe that he did not kill Tina. Nancy’s father, who is a policeman, takes Rod in for questioning. Nancy goes to school and falls asleep in class and hears something outside. She sees Tina’s body being dragged in a

bodybag and she follows. Nancy ends up in the same boiler room that Tina had found herself in prior. As Nancy is being chased, she purposely puts her arm on a hot pipe and wakes up to find that we feel asleep in class and her arm now has a burn mark on the spot where she got burned in her dream. After school, Nancy visits Rod in jail where he confessed he also has been having the same dreams about Freddy. Nancy goes home and falls asleep in the bathtub and is almost drowned. She is convinced that she needs to stay awake and convinces Glen to watch her while she sleeps. Nancy dreams and sees Freddy hanging Rod in the jail cell with the sheet from the bed. Freddy then turns towards Nancy and starts to go after her, but Nancy is woken up by her alarm as Glen also fell asleep. At Rod’s funeral she is describing her dreams to her parents, her parents become worried. Nancy’s mother is concerned as Nancy is relying on caffeine and pills to stay awake so she is taken to a sleep clinic. At the clinic, she is attacked again and when she is woken up, she is holding a hat that has the

name Fred Krueger on it. Nancy’s mom finally comes out with the truth, that Fred Krueger was a child murderer and that while arrested got off so the parents on Elm Street formed a mob, cornered Fred and burned him alive. Nancy realizes that Freddy is a ghost and is getting revenge on the parents by killing their kids, who live on Elm Street. Glen, who lives across the street, has fallen asleep. Nancy, who sees this, calls over to talk to his parents to wake him up, but Glen is killed by Freddy in his nightmare. Nancy soon realizes that she needs to pull Freddy into the real world, like she did his hat to stop him. The final act of the film ends in a climactic showdown between Nancy and Freddy. The next time we see 1428 Elm Street is in the second movie of the franchise. A family moves in years after the events of the first movie. The son, Jesse starts to have dreams about Freddy and is always hot. Over the course of the movie, Jessie, is being controlled by Freddy, who is stuck in the house. He uses Jesse’s body to kill for him. Eventually Freddy is fully in control and by the final act, is able to turn the tables on Freddy. In Dream Warriors, Freddy has taken the house over, which is now abandoned again and tries to lure the children in a psych hospital to it. Eventually Nancy comes back into the picture as a doctor, and the final battle with Freddy happens inside the iconic house. where Freddy is defeated again by

his bones being salted and burned. Nancy and her father both die in this movie. In Dream Master, a model house was built at 1428 Elm Street. The house has become the backdrop for this movie and the next, with Freddy being in control of the house, and the boiler room scenes taking place in it. In Freddy’s Dead the Final Nightmare, we see flashbacks to Freddy as a human, where his wife and daughter used to live in the house. We see in the final battle between Heather Lagenkamp, (who plays herself), in with the dream demon who got power from the new Nightmare on Elm Street movie being made. Eventually Heather’s house turns into 1428 Elm street, where where Heather must rescue her son from the dream demon aka Freddy Krueger Finally, the last movie we see 1428 Elm Street is in Freddy vs Jason, where we learn the final

girl Lori lives. In that movie, her boyfriend thought he saw Lori’s father kill her mother, but it was really Freddy all along.

IN OTHER MEDIA

In 2007, during Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights: Carnival of Carnage, the house was built as one of the haunted houses. It was modeled after the worn down house that can be seen in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. It was also built for the following year’s Nightmare on Elm Street: Home Sweet Hell and in 2015’s 25 year anniversary of Halloween Horror Nights. In comics, it can be seen when Nancy’s roommate’s nightmare about Jack the Ripper. Nancy also uses the house as a safe haven. In Freddy vs Jason vs Ash #5, the house is

destroyed in one of the fights. 1428 Elm Street was also the set used in two music videos. One was for The Fat Boys “Are you ready for Freddy” and in Dokken’s Dream Warriors.

HISTORY

Just like Haddonfield Illinois, Springwood Ohio is a fictitious town created solely for the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Elm Street and Springwood are place holders to represent any town in America. First seen in the original Nightmare on Elm Street, 1428 Elm became a mainstay in the franchise. Nancy Thompson first fought and defeated Freddy. Next Jesse’s family moved in a few years later and Freddy came back. In sequels and remakes, the house itself became a focal point for the franchise. The exterior shots used for 1428 Elm Street was actually a house in LA. The actual address being 1428

N Genesee Ave, Los Angeles California, USA. The house number did not need to change for the movie, so it became 1428 Elm Street. The house was built in 1941 and is a Dutch Colonial. Unlike the movies, the house did not fall into disarray but like most houses, it needed to be updated. It is reported that when the house as last for sale, it went for higher than similar houses in the area and it is due to the fact that it is part of film history. Pictures of the renovations can be found online for anyone looking to see what the inside of the house actually looks like and can compare it to shots from the movie. In 2021, the house sold for over $3 million and once was owned by film director Lorence Scafaria. Despite what people may want to believe, there are no

real life incidents with anything spooky or paranormal. During the time that Lorence owned the house, comedian Bo Burnham filmed an entire special during COVID. With the exterior shots being done in California, one can see many hints that this house is not in Ohio. In the 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street, there are clear palm trees seen around the house and neighborhood, which are not found in Ohio due to the climate and conditions needed for them. Most of the interior shots of the house were built on a soundstage, with the exception of one scene where Nancy Thompson is looking outside and can be seen from the outside. The actual house would not return until Wes Craven’s A New Nightmare. Between the original and A

New Nightmare, a facade was used to replicate the exterior shots. While a facade was used in Freddy vs Jason, during which the main character realized that her house was 1428 Elm Street, the movie was not filmed in Los Angeles, but rather in Vancouver Canada. To many, visiting Nany’s house is a trip that horror fans want to take. 1428 Elm Street became a mainstay in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise and is included in many haunted attractions and is recreated for those invested in many of their houses, an attraction around Halloween. Whether it has a red door or a blue door, 1428 Elm Street is a horror icon unto itself and it is in the ranks of the Myers House, the Amity House and the Overlook hotel.

BY TYSON D. POWELL

WHEN IT COMES TO HORROR HAUNTS, WALES ISN’T TYPICALLY one of the first locations that comes to mind, but it should be. With a grand and sordid history of executions and ghost sightings, Wales might be one of the most haunted countries in all of the UK, which is why it was the best possible setting for The Witches, a 1990 comedy horror directed by Nicolas Roeg which took place mostly in the Headland Hotel in Newquay Wales, with several other scenes shot elsewhere in England.

THE HEADLAND HOTEL

Before the Headland Hotel even had opened its doors, architect Silvanus Travail thought to use his vast knowledge to design and create a Victorian styled hotel that would stand the test of time. In what might be considered something of a grim portent, the construction

46 I

|Most Haunted Locations 2023

of the hotel was plagued by protests and riots in the form of fishermen that had been fishing on the coast where the hotel would be settled. They destroyed equipment, the foundations and even set forest, but that would not stop Travail and the men he hired to complete the project. After some time, the exterior was completed in 1898 and the hotel would open its doors in the year 1900 soon after. At some point in the movie, there is a flashback to a time where Grandma Eveshem is telling Luke about her experiences with witches and how one of them wound up kidnapping one of the childhood friends and trapping her in a painting. There are a number of interior and exterior shots filmed in Cookham Dean, Berkshire, England. These scenes help to establish the passage of time and show how long witches have been a problem for the children in England, and that reality might not be too far off. While Cookham Dean itself doesn’t have a history of witchcraft and magic, its neighboring town of Reading had a bout

of witch accusations in the 1600s. Not much is known about what happened to these poor women and girls, but the few surviving accounts that have been found showed that the accusations did cause them to suffer or become imprisoned. They may have been innocent unlike the evil witches in this movie and book, which is a common theme throughout most of witch-fearing history.

THE PLOT OF THE MOVIE

Based on the novel 1983 by Roald Dahl, The Witches (1990) tells the story of a boy named Luke and his grandmother as they have to contend with a convention of witches trying to figure out a way to turn every child in England into rats. The movie is a bit of a trip to watch as it seems as though it’s going to be the standard childhood affair of a kid setting traps and causing mischief against the villainous adults trying to hurt him, but then as soon as he makes first contact with the witches, Luke is captured and turned into a mouse for the rest of the movie. It’s a staggering turn as Luke figures out how to navigate the hotel, avoid both the regular staff and the witches and help his grandma and another child (who was turned into a rat) fight off the evil. It’s a lesson about maintaining one’s human spirit, despite whatever causes you to become small so that you may rise above it. What starts off as a pretty campy children’s movie, descends into something of a horror and a heartfelt family film, as Luke, his grandma and the other boy have to accept that maybe they will be rats forever. Seeds of this are planted early in the movie as a family loses their daughter as she’s trapped forever in a painting, and there’s a small lesson in overcoming that difficulty

to continue being loving families despite the magic and the tragedy. The witches act with a hilarious amount of camp, evilly hating children as if they’re nothing but cartoon villains. Anjelica Huston’s performance as the Grand High Witch is the most enthralling example of this as she brings a cackling cruelty to the role, demanding “maximum results” from her fellow witches, meaning the death of every single child in the country. There’s even a point where the Grand High Witch pushes a baby carriage down a hill in order to lure Luke away from his hiding place. Even the reasoning for their hatred of children is mildly childish in and of itself as their sense of smell makes the children smell like dog droppings, so what better way to make the world better than being rid of them altogether? It’s just the perfect plan. And how did they plan to turn all of England’s children into mice? By hiding their poison in chocolate! In potentially a nod to his other famous book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dahl made sure to include this bit of fun detail into his book as a wink to his regular readers or those who were aware of his past works. Most of the movie’s visual/practical effects were done by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, overseen by Jim Henson and John Stephenson, with the Grand High Witch makeup done by Steve Norrington and Lindsay MacGowan. The Creature Shop was located in England in this time

Most Haunted Locations 2023|

I 47

period and would have made the travel between the shop itself and Wales quite easy. What wasn’t quite as easy was the amount of time that Anjelica Huston had to spend in the chair as her make up was being done. Application of the Grand High Witch makeup and prosthetics took six hours and removal took an additional five to six to remove, ensuring that they remained intact for the entirety of the shoot. This movie would also be the final one that the late great Jim Henson himself would work on. He helped to lend the movie its wonderful visuals through fantastic looking mouse puppets, with three differing sizes - small, medium and large, each for the different kinds of shots that he and Director Roeg were trying to achieve, whether they were wide shots showing Luke crawling through the hotel: close ups to him or his fellow rat friend talking or medium shots as he talks to his grandmother. The effects look absolutely fantastic and the mouth movements on the puppets match the dialogue in a scarily uncanny manner. It was great work and the perfect send off for Jim Henson’s amazing puppetry career, though the same can’t be said for Roald Dahl who hated the wide release ending that the movie received, especially after seeing an original cut which mirrored his book to the letter and caused him to weep from joy. While this would be the final adaptation that Dahl would see in his lifetime, it wasn’t the last time that this particular story would be put to screen. In 2020, director Robert Zemeckis and Warner Bros. Pictures released a new version of The Witches starring Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer and Jahzir Bruno among others. This adaptation strayed away from the book’s European setting with it instead being set in Alabama in 1968, but also stayed true to Roald Dahl’s vision with its ending remaining the same. Now, Alabama doesn’t have a long history of witchcraft to speak of, aside from what might have been perceived as such from overseers

48 I

|Most Haunted Locations 2023

with their slaves practicing their old religions, but there is one curious tale of a woman who was hanged for witchcraft a hundred years after Salem’s own witch trials. Abigail Abercrombie was a resident of Russell County, Alabama and a widow two times over when she met a man who then died of mysterious circumstances. The owner of the land that the woman’s husband was the overseer of, a man by the name of Claymore, began looking into Abigail and found that she had

no past to speak of aside from the men, almost as if appearing out of thin air. It was then “discovered” that all cats nearby had disappeared when she arrived, that she could erase the memories of children and just as quickly, she was tried and executed as a witch. Hanged above her grave and buried vertically due to superstition, nothing ever grew around the area and Claymore commanded an iron gate be erected around her grave to serve as a warning. Whether or not the tale is true, shows the fervor with which people believe stories of witches and magic, so it only makes sense that The Grandmother in The Witches believes in these ladies of myth so much and is proven right when she’s able to confront them with her

grandson. While not every real life witch is nearly as evil as the ones in this film, the history of persecution that they’ve had to contend with is very much real.

PROMINENT CRIMES AND HAUNTINGS

England has a terrible history of conquering, colonization and religious upheaval. One might imagine that all of this would eventually lead to some amount of bloodshed and that would come in the form of the Monmouth rebellion where protestants tried to depose the Catholic King James II, however, it was a Welsh judge who would become one of the most hayed figures of the time. George Jeffreys was born in Acton, Wrexham, Wales and would go on to sentence more than 180 prisoners to death where many of them were either drawn and quartered or hanged in what is now known as the Skirrid Mountain Inn. This would earn him the moniker of The Hanging Judge. Jeffreys was a very well hated man and had to be hidden in the Tower of London in order to not be murdered by the people of Wales for all of the blood on his hands due to his sentencing. He would die of kidney disease after a long life being plagued with stones and many would say that his suffering wasn’t nearly enough for the crimes against humanity that he committed in the name of the King. Haunted castles and mansions are in something of an abundance in Wales with there being accounts of spooks, specters and spirits in a varied amount of places throughout the countries long history. Places such as Ruthin Gaol in Denbighshire used to be a home for horrendous criminals and their presence is still often felt in those cold halls. Margam Country Park has reports of ghost orbs, Victorian spirits and strange noises in its late hours! Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire even boasts of having the ghost of an ape and if the chance of encountering that isn’t worth the price of admission, one would be hard pressed to find Images from The Times - travel edition, headlandhotel, Tony Atkin and Geograph.org.uk, Stock Photos, Warner Bros pictures, Expedia.com, Timberline Lodge

something else that would be! While the Headland Hotel itself doesn’t have a long history of hauntings, its most terrifying claim is being used as a military hospital during the Second World War, unfortunately seeing the deaths of many service members during that time. To this day, some people still claim to hear the screams of those spirits as they try to sleep or roam the halls or the cries of the nurses that treated them. Everyone is aware that the war was its own kind of hell and knowing that the hotel housed members of the Welsh Royal Air Force added to its mystique and probably contributed to the feeling

of unease that the hotel was able to capture. The Headland Hotel is still standing to this day, though unfortunately the rooms and many of the set layouts for the movie have been obviously changed since the 1990s. The hotel, however, still prides itself on being the one seen in the movie more than thirty years later and the mutual fans of Roald Dahl’s novel and the movie itself flock to the hotel every year to see a wondrous piece of movie history. While Dahl himself wasn’t a great fan of this adaptation (or any that wasn’t 1989’s BFG) it does still hold a special place in the hearts of some fans of his work. It’s well worth giving a look and if one ever finds themselves in Wales, The Headland is one of the first places to be visited, maybe there’ll be a good ghost or two as well!

ALL WORK AND NO PLAY MAKES JACK A DULL BOY. Grab the axe, stay away from the twins, and get lost in the hedge maze as we go into the Overlook Hotel. Stephen King famously stayed at the Stanley Hotel and experienced some spooky things, which in turn inspired him to write the Shining, which takes place at the Overlook Hotel. King and his wife had stayed in room 217 just before the hotel was due to close for the season. Just like many movies, the locations that inspired the stories are not filmed there for a multitude of reasons, and 1980’s The Shining by Stanley Kubrick is no different.

SYNOPSIS - THE SHINING

The movie follows Jack Torrance, his wife Wendy and his son Danny. Jack is a struggling writer and is a former school teacher

(Stephen King was a school teacher turned writer). It is suggested that he find a nice secluded area to go work on his novel and to also get a job to keep his family from struggling. Jack interviews for the position of the winter caretaker. The manager informs Jack that it can get isolated there over the long winter and that the last winter caretaker got cabin fever and killed his family and himself. We learn that Danny has what is later called the Shining. Danny has a vision from his friend Tony, who informs him that his father got the job, and later predicts that his mom will get a call saying Jack got the job. Tony also gives Danny visions of the grisly past and future. This causes him to have a seizure where Wendy takes Danny to the doctor and lets him know about the past, where Jack had

an alcohol problem and hurt Danny. The Torrances arrive and get a tour of the hotel and the head Chef, Dick Hallorann tells Danny that he too has the gift and he calls it “The Shining” and gives Danny the nickname Doc. As time passes, everything seems normal, Jack is working on his novel, Danny is riding around the hotel on his big wheel, but always stops outside room 237 and stares at it, almost as if something is calling to him. One day while riding, Danny is confronted with ghostly twins who want Danny to come play with them. Jack is having issues writing and is starting to show signs of cabin fever. Eventually Danny does go into Room 237 and comes out with bruises and injuries, which Wendy accuses Jack of doing due to his past history. Jack eventually finds his way into the Gold and is greeted by a bartender out of nowhere and begins to drink again. from this point, events continue to spiral downward, as Jack pushes further into psychosis and Wendy and Danny find themselves in a desperate struggle to survive against the growing powers of the Overlook Hotel.

SYNOPSIS - DOCTOR SLEEP MOVIE

Doctor Sleep takes place roughly 39 years after the events of the Shining. Danny is now grown up

and has turned to alcohol to suppress the Shining. Assisted by the ghost of Dick Halloran transition to death peacefully, thus earning the nickname ‘Doctor Sleep’. Meanwhile, a group of people who have the shine find others who drink their essence to extend their lifespans. A young girl named Abra, who has a stronger shine than Danny and has been contacting him through chalk writing on his wall. She reaches out to Danny through and alerts him of a murder which alerts the group to her presence and Danny’s. Abra is able to astral project herself to see events as they are happening. Rose and her band of supenatural villains (known as the Knot) set Abra in their sights, leading to the ultimate showdown between good and evil and taking place in the iconic Overlook Hotel.

DIFFERENCES

Kubrick’s The Shining made changes from the book to the movie itself, which King has gone on record stating he did not like. One change that did happen was the change of the room from 217 to 237. This was on the request of the owner and staff as they were afraid that visitors would not want to stay in room 217 at the lodge because of the movie. Kubrick agreed and changed the room to 237, which does not exist at the Timberline Lodge. The Overlook hotel has been gone over by many people who theorize about how

the inside of the hotel does not match the outside, some stating that rooms that have windows would not as it was located not on an outside wall. The carpet seems to change from shot to shot in the movie, giving it more of a creepy feeling. The hedge maze was made on a soundstage and was not found at the Stanley hotel, which was changed in 2015 to include a 10,000 sq ft maze for visitors to wander through. Other than the room, some differences in the movie can be found. It can be argued that the ghosts were more implied in the movie and that Jack is moreso slowly delving into madness. The book explicitly states that the hotel is haunted. Two major scenes that everyone remembers are the bleeding elevator and the twins that ask Danny to come play with them. While the girls are mentioned in the book, they are not

twins nor does Danny have any interaction with them. The elevator that releases blood is not to be found in the book. That scene came directly from Kubrick himself. Then, there is the finale. There is no hedge maze in the book so the movie ending did not happen. Instead the hotel is blown up with the boiler exploding and a stingray-ish shape is seen moving away from the hotel. This ending is remedied in the Doctor Sleep where the Overlook Hotel is finally destroyed

IN OTHER MEDIA

The Shining has been made into a movie, a tv mini-series and had a follow up book and movie called Doctor Sleep which the 3rd act is back at the Overlook Hotel. Many tv shows and movies have parodied this. Even one segment of the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror finds the Simpsons stuck at a hotel in a blizzard and

Bart has the “Shinning”. The Shining influences can also be seen in writings and the movie Ready Player One, where the players must go into the Overlook Hotel as part of the game and receive a key. The Timberline Lodge itself has also been seen in other tv shows and movies. These include Jingle Belles, Bend of the River, Wild, Lost Horizon, Hear No Evil and All the Young Men. On TV the hotel was used in multiple episodes of Hogan’s Heroes. In Season 2 of Sy-Fy’s show, Ghost Hunters, the crew investigated the hotel for any paranormal activity. The following year, they returned for a live 5 hour event for Halloween.

HISTORY

was only the exterior of the Timberline Lodge that was used for the exterior shots of the Overlook Hotel. The interior shots were done at the Elstree Studios in England. The Timberline Lodge is a destination for those looking for a great place to ski in the Northwest as it has the longest ski season of any location in the United States and it is open to skiers and snowboarders 12 months a year. In a tour of the western facilities helped out by the government, President Franklin D Roosevelt made a speech dedicated to the Timberline Lodge saying “I am here to dedicate the Timberline Lodge and I do so in the words of the bronze tablet directly in front of me on the coping of this wonderful building: ‘Timberline Lodge, Mount Hood National Forest dedicated September 28, 1937, by the President of the United States as a monument to the skill

and faithful performance of workers on the rolls of the Works Progress Administration’”. The lodge was created by the Works Progress Administration, which was funded by the US to help create jobs for workers during and after the Great Depression. The Timberline lodge became a beacon for what the WPA and the CCC was able to do to create jobs and tourism for the state of Oregon. The following year work began on creating a way for winter sports, especially skiers to get to the top of Mt Hood, while the CCC worked on all the wood signs for the lodge. The lodge closed during WWII and was also shut down in 1955 due to the lack of workers and visitors. It has since made a recovery, helped in part by The Shining. The lodge leans heavily into The Shining and has a shop and online store dedicated to The Shining souvenirs. The Timberline lodge

itself has not had any reported supernatural cases, but it does remain a destination for horror fans. In 1982, director Boris Sagal was killed in the parking lot from walking into the tail rotor blades of a helicopter. The Stanley Hotel, on the other hand, has had many cases of paranormal activity. Many go to stay in room 217, the same room that King visited decades ago to see if they can experience anything he described. Many events, festivals are held at the Stanley Hotel in honor of the Shining. There have been reported cases of ghostly apparitions, voices heard, especially around room 217. So whether you are a skier, snowboarder, or horror enthusiast, the Timberline Lodge is for you. The beauty of the mountain in the winter is worth the trip and to get the best look of The Shining hotel exterior. Just stay clear of room 217!

J P

JP: How’s it going Galaxy? Thank you so much for having me on. GALAXY: You’re a DJ, you’re a comic book creator, you’re a writer, JP, what made you want to create the Ninja Funk comic book? JP: First off, it’s been a lifelong dream for me to create a comic book, and then making music with my buddy Steve. He would always joke around “let’s make a comic book, let’s make a comic book”. He knew I was in the industry, He knew I knew the players in the game. And one day during COVID, he sent me a PDF with a full story for Ninja Funk, the first issue, and I was blow away! I was like, okay, this guy’s serious. And I used all my resources. We went into the lab and started creating this lore of Ninja Funk, and here we are today. GALAXY: You’ve known Steve for a long time, right? You guys were in music school together? JP: Yes, we went to music school together, and Ninja Funk is a music project first. We’ve been doing it for over 10 years. And DJing and making music. It’s just a lifelong passion. GALAXY: Ninja Funk is a really cool comic. Very cool concept. What is Ninja Funk about? JP: So Ninja Funk is written in the language of music. So Galaxy, that being said, when you hear music and it’s off key, like, well, how does it make you feel? GALAXY: Ruins the vibe. JP: It kills the vibe, right? In our Ninja Funk universe, it’s killing life itself. And so what the Ninja Funk characters are trying to do is bring the universe back, to bring life back to the universe, bring the vibe back to upbeat and bring the universe back to true harmony.

GALAXY: Did you ever imagine doing something like Ninja Funk? JP: I didn’t imagine it as something like this. I definitely, at that point, wanted to create a comic book for my whole life. So I knew in some form or fashion, this would be my future. It’s almost like my magnum opus. And this is the culmination of everything I’ve learned and picked up and all the talents and skills that I’ve picked up along the way. And all the awesome people like yourself that I’ve got to work with and collab with. So yeah, in a way, yes. But if you were to ask my younger self, they would be so proud of where we’re at right now or where I’m at. GALAXY: If you can do a Bill and Ted and go back, what advice would you give that younger self? JP: I would tell them just be you stay on course. On course. Yeah. And it’s just gonna happen. Like, it’s not the destination. No, this is a trope, but it’s true. It’s not the destination. It’s the journey. And you have to go through this life. The life that that young, younger self is going to go through to get to where I’m at today. GALAXY: Do you have four or five issues of Ninja Funk? JP: We have five- Actually six issues. So, five of them were general release and the sixth one was given out at my wedding. So my wedding did happen, but yeah, it was called the wedding edition. It’s the rarest Ninja Funk comic book out there. GALAXY: Congratulations! Only the guests that attended your wedding received one? Can fans get the wedding issue? Is it going to ever be on sale? JP: The plan is to put it into a compendium or trade paperback. It does affect

J P the story. We made it so that the wedding issue had a similar ending to issue five so that if you did pick up issue five and then read issue seven, that it wouldn’t deter you too much, like you wouldn’t be out of sync. Which has happened. In general it has the same type of ending so that it would seamlessly work. But yea, so hopefully we get out to the fans through that little easter egg sometime in the future. GALAXY: That’s really cool. You basically commemorated, encapsulated, memorialized - let’s use more cool words - you extravaganza’d your wedding by creating a comic book. How did your wife feel about that? You created a whole comic book issue for her! You did it for her, right, not for yourself - wink wink. JP: I did it for everything, you know? Ninja Funk is a part of me and what more can you do but bring a part of yourself to the wedding and that’s something that I totally could have done. Me and Steve DJ’d my wedding and I got to show what we do for a living by giving out our comic book. GALAXY: I read somewhere that you created the first mystery box in the comic industry. JP: I popularized the mystery box. I don’t want to say I was the first because grab bags have been around since I was a kid. But to get the premium format put in a box. And I did it a while ago. But yeah, I don’t always claim that we’re the best mystery box but I always claim that we’re the first. Until someone tells us that they did it before us. Most of the bigger companies, most of the famous artists even know us. But they copied me and they were like “yeah, we copied you.” It’s almost the same thing where you’re talking about the wedding issue. That’s where I love it, you know, when people do it. It’s a form of flattery when they do it, especially when they let us know. Like Comic Tom, he

64 I

|Most Haunted Locations 2023

has probably the best Mystery Box Mystery Mail Call. You know, they noticed us too, so that was cool. GALAXY: Do you still do that? JP: Yeah we have mystery boxes on our whatnot page. That Spider-Man Booth and it’s because we’ve been doing it so long. We still do it pretty well, I would say. And we’ve been doing it years and years. So yeah, you could find this on whatnot, That Spider-Man Booth and Street Level Hero. GALAXY: So in your page on Whatnot, you sell mystery boxes, you sell comic books and variants and things like that? JP: Yes GALAXY: Well, hopefully we can do something with my new comic book series

Almost Dead, it’s releasing Halloween night, but that’s a whole other conversation. JP: Of course, let’s do it. I was gonna say that well, that’s how we came to meet, ‘cause I’ve been working with Tyler Kirkham for almost, I think like six years now. Six, seven years doing variants. And you know, you got him to do your cover. That’s awesome. That’s how it all connects. GALAXY: Tyler is our cover artist, a very cool dude. He connected us and you and your crew came to After the Con our annual event during San Diego Comic Con. JP: After the Con was great! The best party during SDCC. GALAXY: What’s the goal for Ninja Funk, season two, season three? How many issues for this first run?

J P day, you can slow down the feeling of time passing by too fast. haha. JP: Haha.. GALAXY: I heard that your first four issues of ninja funk, basically sold over 250,000 copies. JP: I think that’s the first five issues. We sold around 250,000 with issue one, selling 105,000 units.

JP: So the first one was the four issue mini series. But we have up to issue 25 planned out, outlined. And we’ve written all the way up to issue 17, and the artists are working on issue 10 And 11 simultaneously. And so that’s the thing that the second story arc - well the first story arc, if you know the main antagonists are called B.A.D. Music, which stands for bass and destruction. So the second story arc is called Ninja Funk: B.A.D. Music. And so it has a sub header: B.A.D. Music because they’re taking center stage for the storyline in that story arc and that’s going to be early 2024 and WhatNot, who is our publisher, We are the first original storyline that WhatNot published. And we’re planning for a huge 2024 launch for Ninja Funk: B.A.D. Music and the first four issues were really fun. And we wanted to show this wild world. And the second story arc is really internal, and just has a lot of character development. We really think you guys will enjoy it and focus on BT Bella Bay, and B.A.D. Music and Ninja Funk is off to the side. They’re still the main characters, but they’re taking a backseat while they’re trying to figure things out. GALAXY: Bigger and bigger we go! JP: Yes, this Ninja Funk project,

we’ve been doing it with music, as far as I can remember - for over a decade. And so when I jumped into things, I stopped doing it with everything I have. And for as long a time as I have, i’ll be doing this till the end of McFly and hopefully the end of JPG and hopefully someone can carry it on after I pass. GALAXY: Hey, brother, you got a long time. But, I have a theory if you walk backwards for about half a mile a

GALAXY: That’s wonderful! So, if someone wants to create a comic book series, is it costly? and what’s the most expensive part of creating a comic book, in your opinion? JP: So, I have a simple answer, and then I’ll elaborate on it. The answer is time. So it’s time that costs you because whether you have let’s say you have a lot of money, and then you could just pay for everything yourself, right? It’s still that you had to use your time to make that money and now you can pay for everything. Or you could write a story and just make the best story ever and bring it to the public which may take a lot of time rewriting, send these people and give it to a publisher that will fund it for you. So the answer will be time whether you need to create something the publishers can’t pass up on and they’re going to pay for everything And or you have to make money to throw another way and pay for yourself. And I would say, but then it feels that way. I guess the other answer, I’d say about $50,000$60,000. And that’s me just kind of roughing it out. I don’t want to. Yeah, the way I stand is a little different. Yeah, it’s much, much bigger than that. GALAXY: Absolutely! You can create a Comic for $100 or $100,000 JP: Yeah. Yeah. That’s why I say the answer is time. Because you could just invest a ton of time. And you

Most Haunted Locations 2023|

I 65

J P could create an awesome story. It just might take you a month, or it might take you three years to make that awesome story. And the publisher will pick it up. GALAXY: With the connections, and the amount of people we know in this industry, it still took me five years to create ALMOST DEAD. I’m very picky! Just ask my publisher. haha, I’m the pickiest guy in the universe. But, you’re absolutely right, time and a little bit of money, but please don’t sell drugs. I know JP was saying make money in other ways. Haha. He doesn’t mean sell drugs, he means have a job. JP: Or sell comic books like me. Definitely get a WhatNot. It’s a very good moneymaker for a ton of people. GALAXY: That’s a whole other show we need to do about WhatNot. JP: I’m ready, anytime! GALAXY: When a person purchases your comic, they could also download music with it to listen to while they’re reading the comic book. JP: Yeah, so there we hit, in quotation marks, QR codes there that you could play along, that adds a little element of music and background music to be seen. And so like, if you notice in issue two, we have a QR code where they’re chained up. And then we have a lot of industrial sounds within that song because they’re chained up. And yeah, so it’s, it’s something different. And I think that it’s another thing that we are innovative, at least that I know of, and hopefully it could become a thing with other comic creators. I love to think outside the box and do you know what other people aren’t doing? GALAXY: That’s a great idea. Is it unique?

66 I

|Most Haunted Locations 2023

JP: I definitely try to be, like when we come up with things we Google it I Google it to see if like it’s been done before. And then if it’s been done before in a different industry, you know, most of the time, like will still continue. But yeah, even with how our characters get their power sets, they control the frequencies of the air. And that’s why it has to do with music. And I haven’t heard of anything. It’s possible.

There’s another story like that, but at the very least, I didn’t see it. And so yes, we devil I try to to be different. And I think us we’re not even trying to be different. I guess we’re just because I believe that everybody, it everybody is, I believe everybody is different, and that we’re not conforming to what has been done before, and just are naturally different. So I have a good story with Steve. Steve was forgot about, you know? Yeah. Yeah, he

J P he was, you know, we’re getting in this comic books. And I, I’m not jaded, but I have a story about comic books. And you know, I’ve been through it, and I’m familiar with it. And he’s like, Oh, should I read comics, like, get a better feel? And this is like, do not study comic books. You already have someone in this, me and you that I’ve read comic books my whole life. You are the one that outlines outliers that we kit, it’s automatically completely different. You don’t have any set rules in your head. And when you say spit stuff out. It’s it’s truly truly from a almost like a child’s point of view, where he’s like saying out spitting out ideas. I’m like, No, what’s it called? This? Or what’s it called? Does that because he doesn’t he’s not in the comic book world. But I tell him, it’s like, ah, for else. Yeah. But him spitting out all those ideas. It’s just quicker to an original idea. GALAXY: Is djing important? JP: DJing is the ultimate high. And you don’t even have to be high. You don’t have to be drunk, you don’t have to be anything, just control a crowd, and then rocking to the direction you’re taking them. And building this story with music, and seeing them feel it and feel the storyline you’re trying to create for them. And then they just rock it out. There’s no other better feeling than that. And I know you DJ, that I’m sure you. You got those types of feelings, too. I could be wrong. But I mean, I’ve never had anything that is more gratifying than rocking a crowd we’ve, you know, oh, you had people that you know. And the new wave of DJs? Is that the crowded space scene, the DJ and its performance? It’s not? It’s not like, oh, let’s play popular music. What does this guy have? What storyline is this DJ gonna bring me on and they’re facing the DJ 1000 people? Absolutely. And, you know, you bring them on a ride and you’re,

you’re the storyteller with music. It’s It’s beautiful thing. So now if I could do that 24 hours a day, and people would let me bring on the storyline, I would do it. GALAXY: So when you produce the songs you’re actually fully producing and you’re bringing the singers, a variety of musicians to play instruments, full blown production. JP: Yeah, when we have certain songs that we think as the better rapper will add to it. it or singer than we bring them in, we write the songs. And we vibe it out, you know, we look at the panels and make sure that the what everybody’s singing and our rapping goes with the panel, shout out to all the artists that are providing for ninja funking lend me their talent. So we appreciate them all. GALAXY: Are you a micromanager when it comes to the art? JP: I would say we give them a direction. But the biggest thing is, is an eye for talent. So you you got to know that these guys are, are at the top of their game with you know, Tyler Kirkham. You give them the direction, but this is what they do. And now you just have to get the best out of them. Make sure that it’s not a paycheck, and they’re part of the project. And they they really put out their best work. And so you can, you can tell when an artist is doing their best work or not. Because they have hundreds of them out there. They’re working full time. And you know, what is their best work, and what if, though, work maybe isn’t as good. So, just trying to get them every single time to get closer to the best of their work. And a lot of times what I tell the artists and I tell myself, this is really what I live by, I always say make your, your next project, your best project or make your next art piece your best piece. So right now I’m designing

a character. And I’m thinking that every single, I’m doing a while I’m on the phone, I’m thinking that every single second like I’m like, make this like best character ever. And like, that’s beautiful art ever that I’ve ever done. And so I tried to make that everybody around me. That’s what I want. Because this next song is going to be the best song we’ve ever made. This next comic book is going to be next, the best comic book we’ve ever made. That’s, that’s what we live by. Nice, I kind of went on a tangent, but hopefully, hopefully that makes sense. GALAXY: JP, you got ninja funk, you got the music you produce, you DJ, what’s next in the works for you? What’s the next thing? Are you thinking about creating another project along with Ninja Funk? Or is this the project right now that you’re putting all your heart and soul into? JP: Ninja Funk is always gonna be the heart and soul. But it’s it’s funny that you would ask about that I am currently developing another another project, you know, I have these other short stories in my head that is in in them in different universes and the universe is

very grandioso and very apocalyptic and not real world type stuff, even though it has real world situations and real world character development. It’s not set in the real world like this current world. And so I have these little short stories in my head I am currently working on. So I mean, hopefully we can get our 2024 release. So look out for that. GALAXY: You must be so excited. I have seven projects I’m currently working on simultaneously, and all the stories are in my mind. JP: That’s amazing, wow! Seven projects, I imagine you never have a dull moment, right? GALAXY: Every time I create a character, I want to meet that character. So I bring the character to life. And I introduce myself to it. My family thinks I’m crazy. But I tell them I’m not crazy. This is my process, it’s how I’m supposed to do it. They’re like, why are you introducing yourself to a imaginary character that you created? I say, because it becomes real to me at that point. And some of these characters are so real to me, sometimes, I feel like I met them already. Or I know them, but I know they’re not real. And I have this one story that I’m working on, it’s a very vicious world I’m creating in that series. So many cool things can become a reality

from someone’s mind. Storytelling I think it’s the best way to share it. I can go on and on. JP if you can share one message with the world, what would it be? JP: That’s a that’s a good one. Let me think about it for a couple of seconds. That’s the big thing to put on. What’s the goal? I think I said this earlier, but it’s that that we’re all born different. And that’s, that’s a positive in life. And we go through life, trying to conform to what’s normal and to what everyone else is doing. But in reality, everyone else is different. So it’s everyone else is trying to be like each other. We’re just trying to be the same. So I think the power comes in just being yourself. And truly recognizing that though, it’s not just it being a trope, and people always saying like, Oh, yeah, important, different, different. actually recognize that. That’s the truth. And that’s the power that you have is that you’re already different. And you can innovate, just by being yourself. But you come up with ideas that other people aren’t coming up with. And so yeah, be yourself. I know, it sounds corny, but not everybody takes it to heart. They really take it to heart, be yourself. And you’re going to create something new, something the world has never seen. GALAXY: That’s really awesome. Yeah, be yourself. Such great advice! We want to bring

positivity to the world by creating and doing awesome things. JP, with all the success you’ve had, you’re very humble Dude, you’re very down to earth. Very cool person. I appreciate you. Fans, if you want to know more about ninja funk, please go to ninjafunkhq.com and ninja funk on Instagram. Follow Lazar Wolf and JP MCfly. JP: Yeah, first we want to thank everyone, we have this slogan. It’s, I am into funk. We are into funk. We are all ninja funk. We even said it in the comments. Because without the fans picking it up, without them influencing us, coming to our shows, meeting us in person, you know. And then also the absolute number one best thing you could ever do to support us more than buying a comic book online. Basically the most important thing to ever do to support us is support your local comic book store and go to your local comic book store and ask for things. It’s the biggest thing you could do for us. And, that’s really it. Thanks everyone. Thanks so much! Galaxy, thank you so much for this opportunity. GALAXY: Well said brother! Support Ninja Funk, go to your local comic book store, and if you like this interview, go to ComicCon-Radio.com listen to the full interview and join the pop culture revolution! I love you all!

IN THE REALM OF CLASSIC

HORROR CINEMA, ONE FILM stands as a mesmerizing amalgamation of gothic elegance, timeless terror, and stunning visual aesthetics. “Dracula” (1979), directed by John Badham, presents a fresh take on the age-old tale of the infamous vampire lord. Nestled within the intriguing narrative of this adaptation is the enigmatic St Michael’s Mount, Cornwall, a location that exudes an aura of mystery and intrigue. As we embark on this cinematic journey, we shall delve into the captivating allure of “Dracula” (1979), exploring its connections to St Michael’s Mount, all while catering to both die-hard comic book and sci-fi fans, as well as those unfamiliar with the lore.

I. THE GOTHIC REVIVAL AND CINEMATIC AESTHETICS

The year 1979 marked a significant resurgence of gothic allure in cinema, a movement that captivated

72 I

|Most Haunted Locations 2023

audiences with its emphasis on dark, atmospheric, and visually captivating storytelling. This resurgence was evident in the release of “Dracula” (1979), a film that not only paid homage to gothic motifs but also stood as a testament to the revival of this genre. Within this adaptation, a multitude of gothic elements were expertly woven into the narrative, creating an experience that resonated with both die-hard fans of the comic book and sci-fi genres, as well as newcomers to the gothic realm. Gothic motifs are intrinsic to the allure of “Dracula” (1979),

contributing to the film’s immersive and captivating atmosphere. Eerie castles, with their towering spires and looming presence, play a central role in this cinematic revival. One of the most iconic settings in the film is Dracula’s castle itself, a place that exudes an aura of mystery and danger. This architectural choice draws inspiration from the Gothic Revival movement, which sought to rekindle the architectural styles of medieval castles and churches. This influence can be traced back to the Victorian era and its fascination with the romanticized past, ultimately finding its way into the film’s set design and art direction. Dramatic landscapes, another hallmark of gothic storytelling, further accentuate the allure of the film. From the sweeping vistas of Transylvania to the haunting beauty of St Michael’s Mount, Cornwall, these landscapes mirror the grandeur and melancholy that define the genre. The film embraces the wild, untamed nature of its locations, reinforcing the sense of isolation and otherworldliness that gothic tales often evoke.

A brooding atmosphere is another pivotal element that “Dracula” (1979) skillfully integrates. This atmosphere is a result of the convergence of various cinematic techniques, such as moody lighting, evocative music, and deliberate pacing. The film’s director, John Badham, effectively employs these tools to create an ambiance that is equal parts unsettling and mesmerizing. For die-hard fans of comic books and sci-fi, who are accustomed to narratives that explore the depths of human emotions, this atmosphere adds an extra layer of complexity and intrigue. Various film historians and critics have acknowledged the gothic revival of the late 1970s. For instance, a comprehensive analysis of the gothic genre’s resurgence in cinema can be found in Joel Black’s article “Gothic in the 1970s: The Descent into Darkness.” This article discusses the influence of gothic literature on

cinematic storytelling during that period, emphasizing how “Dracula” (1979) aligns with this trend. Additionally, the film’s production notes and interviews with the filmmakers provide insight into their intentions when incorporating gothic elements. In interviews with director John Badham and production designer Peter Murton, the deliberate choices made in designing the film’s sets and visual aesthetics are highlighted. Their discussions shed light on how the film’s gothic motifs were meticulously crafted to capture the essence of the genre’s revival. “Dracula” (1979) indeed stands as a testament to the resurgence of gothic allure in cinema during the late 1970s. The film masterfully integrates eerie castles, dramatic landscapes, and a brooding atmosphere, all of which are

quintessential gothic elements. Drawing from sources that analyze the gothic revival in cinema, as well as interviews with key figures involved in the film’s production, it becomes evident that “Dracula” (1979) pays homage to the genre’s legacy, while offering a visual treat that resonates with both dedicated fans and newcomers to the world of gothic storytelling.

II. THE CHARISMATIC COUNT: FRANK LANGELLA’S ICONIC PORTRAYAL

In the cinematic landscape, the portrayal of iconic characters can shape the way audiences perceive and connect with a story. In the case of “Dracula” (1979), the charismatic Count Dracula is masterfully brought to life by the suave and captivating performance of Frank Langella. This portrayal not only pays homage to Bram Stoker’s legendary tale, but also introduces a new dimension to the character; one that seamlessly combines the allure of the undead with the magnetism of a romantic lead. This innovative approach proves to be both fascinating and accessible, particularly for those who are uninitiated in the intricate lore of the vampire legend. Most Haunted Locations 2023|

Frank Langella’s interpretation of Count Dracula in the 1979 film provides a fresh perspective on the character’s multifaceted nature. Drawing inspiration from Stoker’s source material while infusing his own artistic flair, Langella imbues Dracula with an air of elegance, charm, and sensuality that differentiates him from previous cinematic portrayals. This transformation is essential in appealing to a diverse audience, including both dedicated fans of the original tale and newcomers who may not be well-versed in vampire lore. Langella’s portrayal introduces a pivotal concept that blurs the lines between horror and romance. This characterization of Dracula as a romantic lead paves the way for a unique exploration of the character’s motivations, emotions, and desires. Langella’s performance resonates with viewers, presenting a Dracula who is not solely a menacing antagonist but also a figure with depth and complexity. This approach taps into the universal themes of love and desire, making the character more relatable and engrossing for a wider range of audiences.

74 I

|Most Haunted Locations 2023

The 1979 adaptation is often highlighted as a turning point in how Dracula was depicted on screen. For example, in the article “A Closer Look at Dracula (1979),” written by film critic James Berardinelli, Langella’s portrayal is praised for adding layers of depth to the character while emphasizing his romantic and sensual aspects. Berardinelli’s analysis showcases how Langella’s performance bridges the gap between horror and romance, making the character’s allure accessible to a broader audience. In conclusion, Frank Langella’s portrayal of Count Dracula in “Dracula” (1979) adds a new layer of complexity to the character, blending the allure of the undead with the magnetism of a romantic lead. This approach, as discussed by film critics and historians, serves as a bridge between horror and romance, making the character

more intriguing and accessible to both seasoned fans and newcomers. Langella’s performance and the impact it had on the portrayal of Dracula enhances our understanding of the innovative direction taken by the film and its significance in cinematic history.

III. UNVEILING THE LOCATION: ST MICHAEL’S MOUNT, CORNWALL

St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall emerges as a location of profound historical significance, mythical intrigue, and awe-inspiring beauty, creating a backdrop that enriches the cinematic narrative of “Dracula” (1979). Nestled within the embrace of the Atlantic Ocean, this captivating island serves as a mesmerizing setting that draws parallels to the mystique often found in comic book and sci-fi settings. “THERE IS AN EERIE SENSE OF PANIC IN THE AIR, A SILENT FEAR AND UNCERTAINTY THAT COMES WITH ONCE-RELIABLE FAITHS AND TRUTHS AND SOLID INSTITUTIONS THAT ARE NO LONGER SAFE TO BELIEVE IN...”

The Killer walked on, oblivious to the heartbeats of many. Like the billion dollar business behemoths that are stretched across horizon and upheld by the millions who tirelessly work the machines, humans will take your orders. You certainly won’t see them on your plate. This is not a gas station out of Edward Hopper’s (Gas, 1940) dream or frame. It certainly ushers in a strange eerie sense to Leatherface’s universe. “You are what you eat.” Really, aren’t you? A gas station is etched in the rich tapestry of horror cinema. Yet there are surprises in gas stations. To list a few examples: the birds in Hitchcock’s The Birds, the duelling banjos in Boorman’s Deliverance. A special mention for Oliver Stone’s Noirish U – Turn – that comes complete with the grinning, toothy and

Getting back to the place. The postal address is as follows:1073 TX-304, Bastrop, TX 78602, USA. The gas station in Texas Chainsaw Massacre, that is. If you happen to be there anytime now, you will notice the change. The chainsaw, surely has disappeared. The remnants exist. Should you catch something in the air, it’s the barbecue. No sweat. However, the coke machine is up and running, and helps wash down anything you have recently eaten. Souvenirs and memorabilia, anyone? Plenty on display. Take your pick. Just in case, you want to bring back something. Spooky yet nostalgic. Texas Chainsaw Massacre was marketed as being based on true events to attract a global audience. It is a subtle commentary on the era’s political climate, maybe, contemporary as well. The gas station is a space like no other. It’s tough to make comparisons with graveyards or mental institutions. ON 31 MAY 2016, THIRD ACT PRODUCTIONS WAS CONFIRMED to use interior and exterior scenes in the township of Port Hope for the film, with filming scheduled to take place in various locations around the township from 11 July 2016 to 18 July 2016. 2016. The exterior of Port Hope’s Town Hall was doubled as the Derry Public Library. The interior scenes were filmed at Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto. Port Hope’s Town Hall is Located just south of the downtown core, at 56 Queen Street, Port Hope, Ontario, L1A, Canada.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF PORT HOPE TOWN HALL

This civic building, designed in the NeoClassic inspiration of the Victorian period, also has Greek revival and Italianate details. A two storey, red brick building, the Port Hope Town Hall has a tall octagonal cupola

with a clock and a bell. The Port Hope Town Hall is surrounded by lawns and gardens, with the Ganaraska River to the east. The Port Hope Town Hall has been recognized for its heritage value, by the Municipality of Port Hope By-Law 21/94, passed on June 27th, 1994. The Town Hall was built between 1851 and 1853, but it was almost destroyed by a fire in 1893. Fortunately, it was rebuilt and restored, and it still serves as the centre of civic life in Port Hope. Here are some facts and stories about the Town Hall that you might not know. - The Town Hall was not cheap to build. It cost

three times more than the original budget, and it caused a lot of controversy and criticism among the residents. Some people thought it was too extravagant and unnecessary for a small town like Port Hope. The Town Hall was not only used for political and legal purposes, but also for social and cultural events.

Before the Music Hall was built on Walton Street in 1871, the Town Hall hosted concerts, dances, lectures, and other forms of entertainment. It was also the place where people gathered to celebrate or mourn important occasions, such as the end of wars or the death of monarchs. The Town Hall has

welcomed some famous visitors over the years. In 1860, the Prince of Wales (who later became King Edward VII) stopped by the Town Hall during his tour of Canada. In 1879, Princess Louise (the daughter of Queen Victoria) and her husband, the Marquis of Lorne (the Governor General of Canada at the time), also visited the

Town Hall. In 1889, Sir John A. MacDonald, the first Prime Minister of Canada, unveiled a monument on the Market Square lawn, in front of the Town Hall. And in 1992, Ramon Hnatyshn, another Governor General of Canada, presented the Coat of Arms to the Town of Port Hope at the Town Hall. While much of the 1853 building was lost,

the 1894 reconstruction was completed in a similar style, although much of the interior space was rearranged and relocated. The Neo-Classical facade is very similar; however, the roof is a steeper pitch and the 12 over 12 windows were replaced with 1 over 1 sash. The octagonal cupola, of the clock and bell tower, is also different from

the 1851 original. The Town Hall has been a landmark in the streetscape for over 150 years. A stunning example of neo-classical architecture, it has a striking sevenbay facade with a central entrance that features a round fan light, a pair of elegant doors and a canopy supported by brackets. Above the entrance, there’s a beautiful Venetian window that adds to the charm of the building. The front is also decorated with pilasters that have caps inspired by the Greek revival style. The brickwork and stone details are original, as well as the end chimneys. The most eye-catching feature of the building is the octagonal cupola that sits on a high base. It has louvred sides with small windows and clocks, and columns with curved shafts. The cupola has a metal roof that extends in a pointed shape, and a cornice with a dentil pattern. On top of the roof, there’s a cast iron railing and a flagpole. The building used to have an indoor market on the first floor, but it was removed after a fire in 1893. The French doors were also replaced by simpler windows, and the steps from the first floor to the ground were eliminated, except for the main entrance. It was designed by Merwin Austin, a famous architect from Rochester, who also built the Second Monroe County Courthouse. The Town Hall was meant to serve as a place for the local government and the public market. The building

survived a fire in 1893, but some of its features were changed over time. The Town Hall has been restored to its appearance after the fire, following the approval of the L.A.C.A.C. (Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee). The Town Hall is a symbol of Port Hope’s history and identity. It reflects the town’s growth and development since 1834, when it was incorporated by an Act of Parliament. The Town Hall is open to the public and hosts various events and activities throughout the year. If you want to learn more about Port Hope’s heritage, you should pay a visit to this remarkable building.

WYCLIFFE COLLEGE

Wycliffe College is an evangelical Anglican school that started in 1877. It was founded by the Church Association of the Diocese of Toronto, a group of evangelicals who wanted to defend their beliefs and rights in the Anglican Church. They faced opposition from the bishop and most of the clergy, who wanted to limit their influence and exclude them from decision-making. The Association promoted the teachings of the English Reformation, such as the priesthood of all believers, and supported simple worship, democratic church governance, and cooperation with other

Protestants. They also created a newspaper, supported evangelical ministers and students, and established a divinity school. The school’s first principal was James Paterson Sheraton, a priest from the Maritimes who taught nine students in a schoolhouse near St. James’ Cathedral. The school grew quickly and moved to a building near the University of Toronto in 1881. That year marked the 500th anniversary of the first English Bible, which was based on the work of John Wycliffe, an Oxford scholar and reformer. The school’s building was named after him, and soon the school itself became known as Wycliffe College. In 1885, Wycliffe College joined the University of Toronto, and in 1889 it became one of its federated colleges. In 1891, it moved to its current location on Hoskin Avenue.

HOW PORT HOPE BECAME DERRY FOR THE IT MOVIE

If you are a fan of Stephen King’s horror novel It, you might be interested to know how the filmmakers recreated the fictional town of Derry, Maine, where the story takes place. They changed the signs,

the storefronts, the flags, and even added a giant statue of Paul Bunyan in the park. They also made sure to include some iconic landmarks from the book, such as the Thomas Hill Standpipe, the Barrens, and the Waterworks. The filming in Port Hope lasted for about a week in July 2016, and then moved to Toronto and other locations in New York. The movie is set in 1989, so they had to find places that looked like they belonged to that era. They also had to deal with some challenges, such as weather, crowds, and safety. Another location was Oshawa, a city about 60 km east of Toronto. The production team built a spooky old house on a vacant lot at the end of James Street, near the downtown area. The house was a facade made of modular pieces that were assembled by skilled carpenters. The filming took place from August 5 to August 8, 2016, and residents in the nearby streets received notices informing them about the project. The filming also involved another location in Toronto, the Cranfield House, a historic building from 1902 located at 450 Pape Ave, in the Riverdale neighbourhood. The production crew occupied the site from July 18 to August 19, 2016. The shooting in Oshawa

wrapped up on September 4, 2016, and the principal photography was completed in Toronto on September 21, 2016. The post-production process started on September 14, 2016.

CURIOSITIES ABOUT THE MOVIE MOVIE TRIVIA • The release date of the 2017 movie “IT” holds a hidden meaning for Stephen King fans. It aligns perfectly with the story’s 27-year cycle of terror. • Pennywise actor Bill Skarsgård kept his distance from the child actors during filming, heightening the impact of his terrifying character when they finally met. • The library scene in the film holds subtle details, with Pennywise’s face hidden in a book and a creepy librarian enhancing the suspense. • The bathroom flooded with blood scene in “IT: Chapter One” used a record-breaking 5,000 gallons of fake blood. • The young Losers Club members were digitally de-aged for “IT: Chapter Two” to maintain continuity. • Stephen King himself provided advice to

the director, Andy Muschietti, adding depth to the movies’ connection to the source material. The cast performed their own stunts, with some minor injuries and a lot of fake blood involved. The final battle was filmed in a massive water tank filled with 180,000 gallons of water. Bill Skarsgård entertained his brothers by Skyping them in full Pennywise attire, creating memorable family moments. Director Andy Muschietti makes a cameo appearance in a pharmacy scene, adding a touch of humor to the horror. Bill Hader struggled to keep a straight face while filming due to his tendency to smile when scared.

Skarsgard’s Pennywise: On 11 March 2017, Muschietti, at the SXSW festival, spoke of an element of the preproduction phase in his attempt to keep Skarsgård separate from the film’s child actors, in which the actor was not introduced to the young cast until their first meeting. About Pennywise with the kids: “It was something we agreed on, and that’s how it happened. The day he

appeared on stage, they went crazy. Bill is like seven – tall, and I can’t describe how scary he looks in person. He’s a tough man, squatting down, making sounds, playing, drooling, speaking in Swedish sometimes. Terrible.” Paul Bunyan: Did you spot the Paul Bunyan statue in IT: Chapter Two? It’s not just a random prop, it’s actually a reference to the original novel by Stephen King, where the giant lumberjack comes to life and attacks Richie, one of the Losers. The movie doesn’t show this scene, but it still pays homage to the statue by having it in the background when Mike explains the history of Pennywise to his friends. The statue is also a real landmark in Bangor, Maine, where King lives and where he based the fictional town of Derry. Many locals find the statue creepy and unsettling, and some even think it’s cursed. Maybe that’s why King decided to use it as one of his horror elements in his book. Towering over main street since 1959, a 31-foot-high Paul Bunyan stands in front of the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine, claiming the city as his supposed birthplace, while establishing a bit of celebrity all its own. The statue was a gift from a New York group of builders who celebrated their 125th anniversary in 1959 by honoring Bangor’s logging heritage. They hired a local

artist to create a realistic and cheerful likeness of the legendary lumberjack, using a metal frame and fiberglass. The result was a 31-foottall masterpiece that can withstand strong winds and harsh weather. If you want to visit the statue, you can find it in front of the Cross Insurance Centre and across the street from the Hollywood Casino. Year of release: Did you know that the release date of the 2017 movie “It” has a hidden meaning for Stephen King fans? The movie is based on King’s novel, where a group of kids called the Losers fight a shape-shifting monster that feeds on children every 27 years. The movie is a remake of the 1990 TV adaptation, which means that exactly 27 years have passed since the first time we saw Pennywise on screen. That’s a pretty cool coincidence, don’t you think? The Librarian: The movie also has some subtle details that shows how Pennywise is always watching the Losers. For example, in the library scene, when Ben is looking at a book about Derry’s history, you can see Pennywise’s face in one of the pages. But that’s not all. If you pay attention to the librarian in the background, you’ll notice that she is staring at Ben with a creepy smile. And every time the camera cuts back to Ben, she moves closer to him. This creates a feeling of

suspense, and makes you wonder if she is going to attack him. Bathroom flooded with blood: If you are a fan of horror movies, you might be interested in some behindthe-scenes details. The film features a terrifying scene where Beverly, one of the main characters, has to face her childhood trauma in a bathroom flooded with blood. The actress who plays Beverly, Jessica Chastain, revealed that the scene used 5000 gallons of fake blood, which is more than any other film in history. She also said during an appearance at San Diego Comic Con that she suggested making the scene more intense, inspired by the classic horror film ‘Carrie’. However, the fake blood was not easy to get rid of, and Chastain had to spend hours cleaning it from her eyes and hair. The child actors were de-aged using special effects: If you watched “It Chapter Two”, you might have noticed that the young Losers Club looked a bit different from the first movie. That’s because they were digitally de-aged to match their appearance in the original film. The sequel was shot only two years later, but the child actors had grown up a lot in that time. Director Andy Muschietti told Indie Wire that he planned to use de-aging effects from the start, and that it was included in the film’s budget. He said he

preferred to shoot the sequel two years later than five years later, because the kids would have changed even more. De-aging is becoming more popular in Hollywood, especially for movies that feature actors playing younger versions of themselves or their characters. Some examples of this include: The Irishman, Gemini Man, and Captain Marvel. But “IT: Chapter Two” is the first horror movie to use this technology, and it did so for a different reason: to keep the continuity of the story and the characters. The filmmakers also used other methods to make the kids look younger, such as shaving their legs and plucking their eyebrows. But the main tool was deaging, which helped create a believable illusion of the Losers Club as they were in the first film. Stephen King Advised Filmmakers During The Sequel: If you are a fan of Stephen King, you probably know that he is very protective of his stories and how they are adapted for the screen. But he was so impressed by the first “It” movie that he actually gave some advice to the director of the sequel, Andy Muschietti. One of the things that King suggested was to add a new scene that was not in the book or any previous version of “It.” Muschietti was thrilled to collaborate with King on Images from New Line Cinema

the movie. He said it was a dream come true for him, since he grew up reading King’s books. The influence of King is evident in both parts of the “It” saga. The movies are based on his massive novel, and they pay homage to his original story and other adaptations. Of course, the movies also made some changes from the book, especially in the second part. But some scenes were faithful to King’s vision, like the one with the giant statue of Paul Bunyan. That scene was taken directly from the book, and King asked Muschietti to include it in the movie. And Muschietti was happy to do so. The Actors Did Most Of Their Own Stunts: “Everyone did their own stunts on this movie,”

Hader said in an interview with IndieWire for “It Chapter Two.” The “SNL” actor also revealed that he suffered a minor injury during filming. “James McAvoy is jumping off 10-foot-tall things... Jessica [Chastain] is doing all this crazy stuff — I had to run 10 feet, and I pulled my groin muscle,” Hader said. He also shared that the actors were usually covered in fake blood and dirt at the end of each day. “You’d just have crap all over you — dirt, tons of fake blood, sweat, and all that stuff.”

“And to get it off of you, they’d put shaving cream on you,” Hader revealed. The Film’s Final Battle Was Filmed In A Sound Stage Water Tank That Was 75 Feet Wide, And Filled With 180,000 Gallons Of Heated, Filtered, And Chlorinated Water: How did the cast of “IT Chapter Two” face the evil clown in the final

battle? It was not an easy task, as they had to act in a huge pool of dark water that was almost five feet deep. But they had some help from the crew, who built a platform under the water so they could stand on it and be only 18 inches deep. The water was not cheap either: they used 180,000 gallons of it, which is more than

enough to fill two large swimming pools. Bill Skargard Made Skype Calls With His Brothers Featured As Pennywise: Did you know that Skargard would Skype his brothers dressed up as Pennywise? How hilarious is that? His brothers are also actors, and they loved seeing him in his clown costume and makeup. They would have a blast chatting with him and making jokes. I wish I could see those Skype calls, don’t you? But that’s not all. Bill Skarsgard also revealed some interesting facts about himself in a recent

interview with WWD. He said that he watched “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” for the first time on a plane. He was curious about why people are so obsessed with them. He even joked about making a show called “Keeping Up With the Skarsgards”. Can you imagine? He also talked about how he prepared for his role as Pennywise. He said that he had to improvise a lot for the first movie, but for the second one, he was more confident and familiar with the character. He said that he scared the effects crew with his crazy facial expressions. He’s so talented and versatile! Director Andy Muschietti Made A Cameo During The Pharmacy Scene: I love spotting director

cameos in movies. It’s like a little reward for knowing the person behind the camera and their style. Sometimes, they are easy to miss, but other times, they are right there in plain sight. That’s the case with Andy Muschietti, the director of “IT: Chapter Two”. He shows up briefly in a scene where Eddie visits the pharmacy. It’s a nice touch that adds some humor and personality to the horror film. If you didn’t know who he was, you probably didn’t notice him. But if you did, you got a kick out of seeing him on screen. Bill Hader Ruined Several Takes By Smiling: If you enjoy watching Bill Hader crack jokes and laugh on screen, you might be surprised to learn that he had a hard time keeping a straight face while filming a horror blockbuster. The actor revealed to Collider during the promotional rounds that he often smiled when he was scared, which ruined many shots and annoyed the director. He had to learn how to act terrified without showing his teeth. His efforts paid off, as he received praise for his role in the movie.

@AlmostDeadComics

Almost Dead is a post-apocalyptic horror- drama adventure about triumph, growth, and the resiliency of the human spirit. With their cinematic comic book series which depicts vicious and visceral events in a raw yet beautiful way, Galaxy has redefined the genre and nearly invented one of their own. Infusing the perilous and unexpectedly exciting journey with absolute horror and an attention to detail that’s rooted in and dedicated to realism, the creator and writers have established a nexus point between exhilaration and terror.
