GIVING BACK
Arecent study showed that, if paid, the average volunteer at a nonprofit, should be receive $28/hour. That means that an organization doesn’t have to pay this amount to an employee, and can instead use this money for other programs and activities. And b) that they should make sure their volunteers are appreciated. Volunteers bring plenty of value to both the person giving their time and talents, and to the organization benefitting from them. In some cases, someone who is retired can do “the best parts of their job” for an organization they like, and not have to deal with the parts of employment they didn’t care about. At the same time, organizations can benefit from skilled help and expertise. Other studies have shown that getting involved in one’s community – especially a non-profit or charity – can let people directly feel like they’re making a difference. They can have a sense of satisfaction and happiness, plus a fun place to spend their time. Even organizations that aren’t strictly nonprofits may welcome volunteer help: hospitals can use guides. Museums can use docents and schools may have committees.
