the art of falling with ewelina pawlik
aggregation of energy is a great challange for contemporary architecture. taking into consideration different time scales, various strategies can be developed aim of this project is to gather sun energy during hot summer days, storing it as potential energy high above the ground, and finaly releasing it in the winter time with a help from gravity. unit uses this energy to adjust his form and position, giving maximum from tiny landscapes. located in vienna project tries to find a way to solve problems with lack of sun power during colder seasons

creating habitats the include not only capacity for people, but also for energy storage, is a challange for upcoming years. this proposal seeks to reclaim areas of vienna, that in normal conditions are not used at all - like the shore of donaukanal or southern sides of every bridge in the city. vertical movement give also opportunity to minimize physical footprint of the unit, thus making it perfect to small vertical communities blended into surrounding it can be also an enchancement of ideas like car to go or bike to go - simply take out your phone, check next empty unit in your app and there you go - whole night in a cozy hanging cocoon, slowly balancing 12 meter above the ground awaits. thw whole energy is being stored in a current state of the unit - which simply means the more sunlight it gathers - the higher it moves. climbing upon secondary construction is a relatively slow process, taking few weeks to complete. once up - the form begin to gradually lower itself over winter months releasing its hidden power by using gravity

two engines, located at the bottom and at the top back part of the unit, help to create movement not only vertically: by moving in different velocity they can squeez or stretch the whole unit, opening it up according to inhabitants or the sunlight demand

asnyk square, poznań, poland the idea of project.02 is based on working with two layers. first layer is square surface, slightly bended upwards, on which a playground for kids has been made. its form introduces a bit of theatricalness into children’s activities, being the only hill in the whole neighborhood. the second layer is rehearsal room for musicians, or actually a set of rooms located under asnyk square. spanning over 40 square meters, this layer contains rooms with piano, drum set, and two smaller rooms for meeting with friends. subtle atmosphere is enlighten with roof windows, giving an amazing visual, but also sonic interaction with upper playground

asnyk square is located in architecturally interesting neighborhood, which is unfortunately filled with low standard of social life. lack of meeting spaces for people, both indoor and outdoor, results in relatively low safety level. the area - mostly at night - is filled with either drunk or agressive people, especially between 15 and 30 years old. giant modular grid, upon which project.02 is based on, was created with arcs and not concentric circles. it fill the place with dynamic emotions and provokes to spend the time with vivid activities. some of the moduls had been designed with a function. in front of the rehearsal room modules transformed into benches and staircases. on the playground for kids - on the other hand - they became not only benches, but also sandpits and slides, taking advantage of the slope

propose to him fresh, architecturally unique point of view. a musician starts his experience with the interior by entering rehearsal room ser through huge, slide doors made out of glass. he enters the tunnel, which

is prepared out of elliptical segments. their size decreases while going further inside. at the end of the tunnel there is a buffet with drinks and a staff room. entrances to the rooms can be found alongside the walls

every single room has been adapted to the needs of disabled people. it was accomplished by creating ramps with low-degree slope in the tunnel and into the rooms .the whole interior is made out of bended wood, painted white. inside each room, on the
other hand, white panels with perforation had beed installed, increasing accoustic parameters. high, glass doors, placed in the entrances to the rooms, are additional inspiration for the musicians, keeping them visually all the time with unique form of the tunnel

an inspiration for the form of project.02 was sand worm: mythical creature, living in deep sands of planet arrakis, from frank herbert’s ‚dune’. segments of his heavy armour, which in so expressive way slided on sand dunes, were a base idea for the tunnel inside rehearsal room set for musicians. elliptical segments of the tunnel are based on golden 19

section and overlap each other. tunnel bends slightly towards one side. this makes a rythm, which leads observer along inrigouos curvy path, closed from one side by the bar, and opened to the square surface on the other end. inside entrances to the rooms were made simply by cutting sides of the segments and pulling them aside

strategy with m. kitala and z. belousova, design independently located in okayama prefecture, inujima used to host more than 3000 people on its tiny area, mostly because of work opportunities. for centuries granite was exploited from multiple quarries, providing material for buildings all around japan. beginning of 20th century brought a slight change in production - when copper refinery was introduced to the island. yet after shutdown of the refinery - population begun to migrate, and connections with japanese mainland begun to blur currently inujima has less than 50 inhabitants with an averege age above 80 - what creates an astonishing feeling of being in other space. our proposal for the new image of the island inujima is a school of craft

we want people to spend time more actively on the island. tourists will be encouraged to learn the history of craft and make their souvenirs during classes. people, who realy want to explore given problem, will be able to take part in workshops, spanning from few days to several months, making them inhabitants of inujima. during their stay, they will carry out more complicated tasks and produce high quality objects. crucial element of our School’s scenario is production of elements for the future reconstruction of inujima

the aim of this project was to find actuall nature of fibers, synthesize it, and try to experience multiple possibilities hidden in this intricate form of geometry first step begun with choosing two simple materials - cotton fibers and hot glue. while cotton is already in its fibrous state, research took off immediately, trying to mix it with water in the first place. results were satisfying, but with a lack of durability. next phase started by taking liquid glue, and dipping cotton fibers directly into it. forms generated in such process were of manual work, but were preserved after drying. with this material input the process itself gained much more priority, and the first result of such was to take take cotton poured with glue, and twist it with drill. the result seen at the photo invited us to go further into research, direct into micro world of intricate interconnections

fibrosity // material research + design // with nicolas rivero drilling glued cotton fibers gave an opportunity to produce relatively uncontrolled forms, but with clearly controlled typology. behaviour of such fiber movements gave certain repetitive results, such as micro-scale interconnections between main strains of cotton, which were twisted around itseld and along with other strains. when looked at them in detail they do not present completely different structural behaviour that standard - ‘clean’ cotton fibers: they are just an exaduration in terms of self organization. to explore this thema we organized another process - using wind as both drying and moving force. this time fibers were soaked in a mixture of liquid glue and water, in order to unitize input material. then wet mass was forced to move and twist itself, being tarnished by hot air and gravity. the process itself took slightly less time than previous one, since drying time was shortened to approximetely 5 minutes. result differed from drill research, and took the same intricate interconecctions, separated and pinched them together, producing those amazing, porous surfaces, still reminding of fibrous nature when examined in detail second part of the research was based upon hot glue. using this simple tool, we have begun to force liquid to become an actuall fiber material. next step was to incorporate cold water, in order to speed up cooling process, and achieve more random forms. an enhencement came with changing the pistol to bigger pan filled with hot glue - this time poured into cold water more as unified mass. results were more intricate and moved to the next step of research. in order to achieve real flow of glue, hot material has been poured into flowing stream of water, forcing it to twist along and catch small particles of air 33

processing script, based on plethora core and boids behaviour, consist of four main driving forces: separation keeps agents in certain distance from each other, securing the ‘safe area’ arond them cohesion and alignment on the other hand are driving boids to head towards each other, and after critical distance is reached - go with each other along resultant force the last force was pressure - an input given from outside the script, to which boids react - if the pressure is low, then formation is more twisted and coherent, but if the pressure gets higher, formation begin to react more chaotic and intricate

behavioral simulations along with involvement of pressure encouraged us to try implementing such structures into diving center, using different typologies to enchance perceptions of underwater space, as well as keeping the construction safe according to different amounts of pressure met in various heights of the building.upper parts of the diving tube are based upon standard twist behaviour of the boids, giving good warmup for the divers, while last , deepest parts of the tube remind of real unhuman structures, desolated spaces that one could reach only in deep space or in the depths of our oceansis is also play with memory, giving harder environment to be lost in as we go deeper, leaving clear structural typology in upper - safer parts of the tube. change of flock behaviour on the bottom of the tubes aims also to allow construction to connect into water pumping system located underneath the center

beautifully grotesque workshop with michael hansmeyer in the age of algorythm-based design, deliberous usage of mistakes could be as important as concious construction of an argument completed during workshops with michael hansmeyer and christoph mueller, this project dives into processing 2.0 subdivision scripts, taking generation of 2D drawings to a whole new level of details. yet - what seems to be most important here - lays outside of pure mathematical bounds. by shifting from deformations to concious mistakes, new interpretation of existing graphic pattern can be achieved
