p r o j e c t . 0 2 rehearsal room for musicians semester II | 2010/2011 asny k square | poznań teacher: arch. k. skalska poznań university of technology department of architecture asny k square is located in architecturally interesting neighborhood, which is unfortunately filled with low standard of social life. lack of meeting spaces for people, both indoor and outdoor, results in relatively low safety level . the area - mostly at night - is filled with either drunk or agressive people, especially between 15 and 30 years old. the idea of project.02 is based on working with two layers. first layer is square surface, slightly bended upwards, on which a playground for kids has been made. its form introduces a bit of theatricalness into children’s activities, being the only hill in the whole neighborhood. the second layer is rehearsal room for musicians, or actually a set of rooms located under asny k square. spanning over 40 square meters, this layer contains rooms with piano, drum set, and two smaller rooms for meeting with friends.

giant modular grid , upon which project.02 is based on, was created with arcs and not concentric circles. it fill the place with dynamic emotions and provokes to spend the time with vivid activitie s. some of the moduls ha d been designed with a function. in front of the rehearsal room modules transformed into benches and staircases. on the playground for kids - on the other hand - they became not only benches, but also sandpits and slides, taking advantage of the slope. another important elements are skylights placed nearby sandpits, which are subtly pouring rays of light into rooms below.

interior of rehearsal room set is also based on the modular grid, making inside more connected to outside. bended walls are made to move obser ver into another dimension, to take him out of perpendicular walls’ monotony and propose to him fresh, architecturally unique point of view. a musician starts his experience with the interior by entering rehearsal room ser through huge, slide doors made out of glass. he enters the tunnel, which is prepared out of elliptical segments. their size decreases while going further inside. at the end of the tunnel there is a small buffet with cold drinks and a single room for the staff. entrances to each rehearsal room can be found alongside the walls. ever y single room has been adapted to the needs of disabled people. it was accomplished by creating ramps with low-degree slope in the tunnel and into the rooms . the whole interior is made out of bended wood, painted white. inside each room, on the other hand, white panels with perforation had beed installed, increasing accoustic parameters.

an inspiration for the form of project.02 was sand worm: mythical creature, living in deep sands of planet arrakis, from frank herbert’s ‚dune’ segments of his heavy armour, which in so expressive way slided on sand dunes, were a base idea for the tunnel inside rehearsal room set for musicians

elliptical segments of the tunnel are based on golden section and overlap each other

tunnel bends slightly towards one side. this makes a r ythm, which leads obser ver inside

entrances to the rooms were made simply by cutting sides of the segments and drawing them aside

that’s kindergarten! nurser y school for 3 groups semester IV | 2011/2012 dąbrówka | 5km from poznań teacher: arch. p. bartosik poznań university of technology department of architecture nurser y school in dąbrówka was as interesting, as r esponsible from the ver y beginning. tr ying to design edcation facility indicated a slight change of approach: now the need was to tr y view the world, particularily rooms and furniture, from the perspective of 4-years old children... and to keep in mind how fast and chaotic they can be. the design begun with evoking emotions of 4-years old children, whose interests and ‚plans’ can differ during the day realy fast. there are although activities, that are universal each day, despite summer ’s hot sun or winter ’s snow: running, rolling down the slope, riding a bike or simply paying something.

form of this nurser y school is strong only in the topographic point of view, - most of all - lies strongly in percepof dąbrówka citizens. smoot h transifrom plain into quasi-hill evokes wish of not only in kids, but also in their parents.

that’s kindergarten! is based on a circle, which implies equality between children and adults, making in the same timean active space for social and sport meetings, which surrounds children from ever y side. placement of group - rooms is dictated by sunlight in the morning.

ground plan

key element of this nurser y school is green roof. it was made especially for children, which are always happy to join games on the hill, where grass works as a shock-absorber

entrance to the roof is combined with and outdoor courtyard, which is in the center of the whole design. courtyard can be easily reached from ever y group - room and from inner f oyer. it is a common space, which gives an extremely exotic view - taking into consideration the form itself - but in the same way provides security.

the facade was made out of concrete slabs, which are not only holding the green roof, but are also creating r ythm, which can be a key elemen t in children games. it invites also adult to come and explore this complex form. while going further from the entrance, people are heading towards the place, where the roof meets with the ground.

m a r c i n e k student integration house BA thesis | 2013/2014 śwmarcin/piekary | poznań teacher: dr hab. inż. arch. ewa pruszewicz-sipińska, prof. nadzw. PUT poznań poznań university of tech. department of architecture Św. Marcin and Piekary street crossing is truly a curious place. It is here where historical sacrum and modern profanum meet. It is also here where two major axes ends - those of Św. Marcin and Marcinkowski Avenue. It is here where history put next to each other medieval church and shopping mall with its facade - literally - warping space around itself. It is here where kebab on the corner saved the night for many people, and it is finally here, where the dream of Piekary Cross-City Line turned into one of the most peculiar urban form: a parking lot. This place, however - despite series of destabilizing factors is filled with potencial hidden on multiple levels. Memory of Św. Marcin filled with joy, urban-cultural identity of the church, or the story of non-existing corner building - invites us to begin the dialog, to look for possible intervention.

Design of Student Integration House was based upon two main assumptions. First of them was to bring order into chaotic , filled with multiple architecture styles neighbourhood. It led to closing the quarter with 4-storey building, which architecture blended into surroundings, creating a dialog with nearby Św. Marcin church in the same time. Second assumption was to activate thePRODUCT space, to PRODUCED BY AN AUTODESK EDUCATIONAL create a vivid communication hub bursting with life, which could affect not only close neighbourhood, but also - by involving students from nearby un iversities - influence entire western part of Pozna ń downtown, Św. Marcin street in particular.

Important factors in close neighbourhood are educational buildings: Adam Mickiewicz University, Music Academy, University of Economics and University of Fine Arts, which are creating significant student activity. Connection between Św. Marcin/Piekary street crossing, and universities listed above, is done by diverse means of transport - which can lead to different perception of this place and creation of various mental maps.

The project is located at Św. Marcin and Piekary street crossing, in downtown, Poznań. It is connected visually with Św. Marcin widening, and cognitively with Wiosna Ludów square and Plac Wolności square. In close distance buildings permanently inscribed into local perception can be seen - Św. Marcin church, Piekary High-Rise Offices and newly built Galeria MM shopping mall.

Function program lays upon three main factors: integration area, exhibition area and lecturing space. Exhibitions consist of installations and space interventions, that can reach up to few meters. That is why open, triple-volume space has been designed for it, allowing to suspend installations under the ceiling, giving an opportunity to play with the distance between visitor and art itself. Furthermore, common exhibition area is located near transparent facade next to the church, which creates unusual dialog, and subtly separates sacrum from integration’s profanum. Key function of Marcinek is widely understood integration, spanning over the first floor. This introduces slight tectonics into space flow, allowing integration area to visually and accoustically connect with exhibition space. In order to activate integration and give people tools to begin with, series of elements had been placed inside, such as hammocks, comfortable seats and tables with access to electricity and internet. The entire wall is covered with red foam pyramids, which bind all the integration area together, visually and kinetically stimulating all activities, giving proper accoustics for conversations in the same time.

To complement those areas located on 0 and +1 level, spaces for creative business on level +3 were designed, giving a chance for student start-ups, atelier and workshops to develope in cooperative atmosphere. The last major design factor was the facade. As the front wall of Marcinek was supposed to open itself towards Św. Marcin street, and activity around it was to increase - pavement lamps were introduced in order to cover entire wall with shadowplay, spanning over a large steel mesh facade. It is also a nod towards earlier ‚Marcinek’ - a children’s theater located on this ground before the place was teared down with bulldozers. It lasted here from late 40’ until mid 70’, educating several generations of Poznanian children.

lay

Space for integration is divided into two main , double-volume parts, which are located near exhibition area and next to lecturing space. Hammocks and soft pillows are filling the area called integration+exhibition, creating proper atmosphere to chill out with friends and integrate with games and activities. It can be also district of calmness, giving unusual opportunity to rest - or even sleep a bit - in hammock or right upon the pillow stock. Near the auditorium - on the other hand - a space of integration+lectures is created, prepared for short backstage meetings with lecturers.
