Facts and Figures about the Austrian Life Science Sector*
Life Science Austria - LISA is a program acting as a hub for people from all over the world who are interested in the life science sector in Austria. Together with its associates in the Austrian regions, LISA is the first point of contact for anyone with questions about scientific collaboration, setting up an operation, or funding and sponsoring projects and businesses in Austria. The primary objective of the initiative is to increase the number of life science companies in Austria, either by setting up new ones or introducing established enterprises from abroad. Thus, LISA offers assistance and advice to those planning on establishing their company in Austria.
In 2007, Austrian life science companies generated revenues of 8.7 billion EUR, invested 590 million EUR per year and employed over 28.000 people. 10% of total revenues are spent on research, 21 % in the biotech sector alone. 44% of Austrian life science companies were set up before 1999. Within the biotech sector, more than half of companies are active in the field of human health. Half of Austria’s biotech companies have been set up

The surveyed companies consisted only of R&D and production companies. No service or trading companies were considered.
