WELCOME W

ith the global COVID-19 pandemic, we are all living with much uncertainty. What is clear already now is that this situation has profound implications for everyone in the Olympic community as well as for the entire world of sport. The most visible impact was the historic decision to postpone the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 to next year, in order to safeguard the health of the athletes and everyone involved in Games. This unprecedented decision would not have been possible without the unified support of so many, in particular the International Federations, the National Olympic Committees, the athletes, and our Japanese partners and friends. This great demonstration of unity in the Olympic Movement is a strong foundation as we look ahead to make the postponed Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 into a celebration of solidarity and resilience of humankind. The IOC is working at full speed with our Japanese partners to ensure safe Olympic Games that are fit for the post-corona world. Around the world we are seeing the return of international live sports events. This return of sport shows us all that we can organise sport competitions even with current restrictions in place – and it gives us confidence for the safe organisation of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. While the crisis is far from over, we can see already now that sport is widely recognised as an essential factor in fighting the pandemic and as an integral part of the solution for the crisis recovery. Held under the theme “How Sport and Society Can Emerge Stronger from a Global Crisis” this year’s IF Forum puts the spotlight on the positive impact of sport on society. In this way, the IF Forum sends an important signal to the world: sport is ready to contribute to rebuild a more human-centred and inclusive society. Over the past weeks and months, we have seen clearer than ever that we are always stronger together. In this Olympic spirit, I wish you fruitful discussions and a successful IF Forum. Best regards,

Thomas Bach President, International Olympic Committee

IF FORUM 2020

WELCOME I

am delighted that you are joining us for this groundbreaking 14th edition of the International Federation (IF) Forum.

In normal times, we would be meeting in person in Lausanne for our annual gathering that has become an established and highly anticipated event on the calendar. However, it is evident that 2020 has been far from normal. This year, faced with a multitude of restrictions and uncertainties in relation to the pandemic, we have all had to rise to a different type of unforeseen challenge and adapt on a daily basis. At SportAccord, the challenge has been to innovate, by adapting the established format of the IF Forum into a fully virtual gathering – and the team has worked relentlessly to facilitate a virtual solution allowing us to come together as a group under these unusual circumstances. The IF Forum has always encouraged the sharing of knowledge, the strengthening of relationships, and frank discussions about the crucial issues facing International Sport Federations. For that reason, this year’s IF Forum, which brings together the global sports movement as a community, has never been more important. The IF Forum 2020 conference theme, ‘How Sport and Society Can Emerge Stronger from a Global Crisis’, has been shaped by developments over recent months and, thanks to a collaborative effort, more than 30 leading figures have been lined up to tackle several important issues. Insights will be provided by International Sport Federations and other subject matter experts on various strategies to drive the recovery of sport following the pandemic whilst enabling sports leaders to put in place game plans that will mitigate challenges that may arise from possible unforeseen disruptions in the future. Several critical topics will be debated, including crisis management, scenario planning, how to limit risk from a legal and financial perspective, law-related commercial considerations for IFs and how to stay connected and reassure athletes, fans and stakeholders in times of adversity. I am sure we can all agree that these are all priority areas for sport’s governing bodies over the coming months and years. Although we are not able to gather together in person this year, the strong programme and line-up of contributors means that the IF Forum will be a vital signpost for the global sports movement as the dust settles on a turbulent 2020 and thoughts turn to a brighter future. All of sport’s custodians and decision-makers have an important part to play in collaborating to inspire positive change whilst preparing for possible future challenges, and the IF Forum 2020 will serve as an essential starting point. I wish you a successful IF Forum 2020,

Dr. Raffaele Chiulli President, SportAccord and GAISF
