Our Sprint cover star this week, Winning Form’s South African champion jockey Warren ‘Wagga’ Kennedy partners Paul Peters’ lightly raced Sworder Street in Sunday’s Listed Michaelmas Handicap at Hollywoodbets Greyville. Warren says that his mount is a ‘progressive stayer’ and must rank a major runner in the weekend’s only stakes feature. The champion jockey is holding fourth position on the national log as we wind our way to the end of the first quarter of the new term. As we went into Wednesday’s KZN meeting, Warren (23 winners) was 18 behind Lyle Hewitson, with East Cape champion Greg Cheyne on 33, and the in-form S’manga ‘Bling’ Khumalo, enjoying a flying start after a dull few seasons, on 32 in third. Warren tells us that he is determined to defend his hard-earned title with vigour. “Last season I came out the blocks flying and hit a high momentum early on. This season my Gauteng and KZN yards have not hit top gear yet and I haven’t been riding in the Eastern Cape. So given the circumstances, I’m not unhappy with the state of play. The horses will start turning soon and then we will be in the mix,” he added confidently.
Warren conceded that there was no pressure on him in the early part of last term. “I was the hunter and I was really going great guns. This season I am wearing the crown and there are some top-class jockeys, including past champions, looking to take it back. It’s early days yet, but they will have to fight for it as I’m definitely not giving it to them on a silver tray,” he laughed. The happy gurgling of Warren’s almost 17 month old daughter Jamie can be heard in the background as he chats to us. “Chasing the title takes a lot out of family life. I leave when Jamie’s asleep and get home when she’s asleep. So I have worked hard on putting in quality time when I get the chance. They grow up quickly – and I’m determined not to miss out,” he adds. Warren partners the Cheveley Stud-bred Judpot gelding Sworder Street, who won his maiden beating subsequent Gr1 SA Derby hero Out Of Your League by nine lengths back in September 2019. “His return run after a year break was a fair effort. He can only strip fitter on Sunday and while inexperience and the trip may be factors against him, he is a

smart stayer in the making and could well be good enough,” says Warren. Justin Snaith’s year older Crown Towers has to give the Gauteng raider 9,5kgs but has shown his class with some reasonable showings in stronger company. The 2020 Listed Jet Master Stakes winner could be the Snaith’s first serious off-season feature prospect out of their new Summerveld satellite base. The Listed Michaelmas Handicap is run at 15h30 on Sunday.

While it has taken almost a lifetime in the game and a testing twist and turn or two along the way, the vastly experienced Carl Hewitson saddles his first runners – four in total - out of his brand-new Summerveld base at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday. The year 2020 has delivered a few curved balls along the way for all of us – but the internationally accomplished former jockey is taking it all in his stride as he approaches his 56th birthday on 22 October. The cucumber-cool horseman has an unflustered air of confidence about him.
It’s clear that South Africa’s youthful Champion Jockey of last term, Lyle, gets his nerves of steel direct from ‘Daddy cool’. Carl Hewitson’s name was quietly published in the National Horseracing Authority Calendar Volume 120 Issue 11 on 9 October 2020. The administrative rubber stamp opened the doors to a new world of new challenges for Yvette Bremner’s former Lieutenant. After the events of 17 September – Fairview’s Black Thursday – as the
media labelled it, the Briton’s life as he knew it, was changed forever. Yvette Bremner’s Dippin’ Blu stables, from where Carl had, as an Assistant Trainer, saddled plenty of winners, looked like a deserted movie set after the events of that dreadful day. The scurrying tumbleweed was the only evidence of life twenty four hours later. “It’s been a very different kind of year for the whole world, I suppose. If you has asked me a month ago if I would be readying to send my first horses out at Hollywoodbets Greyville, I may have thought you were crazy. But that’s life

We were happy and worked well there. But Summerveld is superb.” Carl has been accompanied by his long-time friend and colleague Rocky Agrella – another former jockey. and the circumstances that got us here were sudden and a shock for all of us. that Carl has done for many of his 56 years. He started out as an apprentice to veteran Kingstone Warren trainer Henry Candy. Now in the twilight of his career, Candy has trained for a half century with success at Gr1 level with the likes of Time Charter, Master Willie and Kyllachy and Limato, to mention a few. Carl’s solid grounding was reinforced when he worked for another experienced top man in Mark Usher at Rowdown Stables, before moving to Western Europe and Belgium where he rode with some success for four years. Carl got an invite from a South African trainer to come and visit here on a working holiday. That was to prove a turning point in the British jockey’s life as he made Africa his base forever thereafter. “I rode in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, and also spent 6 years in Malaysia and 4 years in Mauritius.
But like so many guys, the weight bogey got the better of me and I hung up my saddle 20 years ago.” He sends out his first runners on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Greyville and says he expects the first few months to be a serious learning curve. “They may appear to be working well at home but one never knows until we get the local balance right. So my first few may well need the outing. But I have been very fortunate to have had the likes of my son Lyle, Wayne Agrella, Stuart Randolph and Gareth Wright riding my work and providing feedback.” As for the transfer of support from the Eastern Cape to KZN, Carl says he has been fortunate to enjoy the backing of dyed-in-the-wool passionate racing folk who have made the move a fairly smooth transition at short notice. “I don’t want to name names or leave anybody out. The people that have stood behind me and made it

possible know who they are. I am deeply appreciative and the kindness has extended to the racing operator and my colleagues here. Our team is looking forward to the challenge of racing in what is South Africa’s leading racing centre.”

REVIVING THE VIBE With the Cape Summer Season on the horizon, Kenilworth Racing and the Racing Association have appointed Donovan Everitt with the brief to build a new, fresh ownership experience, as well as improve hospitality, events, on-course experiences and commercial partnerships. It’s a massive job! The 42 year ‘young’ – in his words - Selborne College old boy has many years of experience in event delivery and commercialisation having previously been involved as a direc-
tor of the Cape Town Cycle Tour, in the formative years of the L’Ormarins Queens Plate day and the Cape Town Rugby 10’s. He has since disposed of his interests in the rugby tournament company. A family man and sports fanatic, Donovan quoted his spare time activities as ‘changing nappies and the odd surf’ when he caught up with the Sporting Post earlier this week to introduce himself to our readership. Donovan proudly tells that he represented South African Rugby at U18, U21 and U23

level and was part of the winning team in U21 Junior World Cup in Argentina in 1999, with Jake White as coach and John Smit as Captain. With a youthful disposition that belies his experience, Donovan successfully ran his own Brand Activation Agency for a decade, representing a host of blue-chip clients within the South African market place . Based in London within the Event and Experiential marketing sectors, he worked on many of the top Festivals such as O2 , T in the Park , V Festival and Creamfields, to name a few.
Donovan Everitt son, he started and managed Rugby Tens alongside Bob Skinstad and Rob Fleck for 8 years, and then moved on to the Cape Town Cycle Tour where he was a Director for the past just under 5 years. He isn’t brand new to racing – he was also heavily involved in the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate in the formative stages of South Africa’s premier classic raceday for a period of 3 years. He has been attending events at Kenilworth for a good part of 20 years, over and above the annual pilgrimage to the Met and the Durban July.
Explaining his potential value-add for Cape racing, he outlines that his experience is essentially made up of understanding the operational requirements and systems to deliver major events effectively, while having the experience within the commercial partnership footprint to bridge operations and deliver a commercial Return on investment. We asked how he saw himself bringing his more popular mainstream sport exposure experience into the narrower racing domain? “I’ve been exposed to a lot within different sectors and I’ve experienced and represented both sides from an event and

commercial perspective. I believe that challenge is to broaden the narrow racing domain into an offering that appeals to all. And take Kenilworth and Durbanville – they are both fantastic racing locations that can offer a multi purpose venue offering within their geographical spaces. Around the globe, horseracing is the spinal cord that is the base of the Melbourne Cup in Australia and Goodwood in the UK and offer a multitude of consumer experiences.” He goes on to say that he believes that if we are able to create an environment of a multipurpose venue offering, within a cost effective consumer experience, the better we will be positioned to expose people to racing. “I also believe the offering of a Race-Day experience needs to be repositioned to add entertainment for the whole family.” We asked him to nominate what he saw as the biggest single hurdle preventing him reaching his goals – and facing racing. “Right now our focus is really just to do

the basics well, operationally deliver, up our communication and support to our stakeholders and, from a service and consumer price point perspective, deliver experiences at the races that cater for all and leave people wanting to come back.” He concedes that there is a lot that needs to be done in order to deliver the above effectively. “I would not say there is anything preventative, but more so time management challenges within listening to stakeholders and then aligning our strategies collectively in order to reach our combined objectives . A lot can be achieved together.” We asked him for his view of racing’s perception in the public domain as an entertainment option?

Vercingetorix built on that early success when Ikigai won last season’s Gr3 Tony Ruffel before cruising home in the Gr2 Gauteng Guineas and he narrowly missed out on a second Classic winner when Padre Pio went down by the shortest of shortheads in a fierce heads up, heads down finish to the Gr2 Guineas at Hollywoodbets Greyville, prior to his fine second in the Gr1 Daily News 2000. To date, that initial crop has yielded a fourth stakes winner in Listed Umngeni Handicap winner Celtic Voyager, Gr2 Ipi Tombe third Wisteria Walk, Gr3 Cape Nursery second Fearless Warrior and the stakes-placed quartet of Battle Of Alesia, Vaseem, Nebraas and Glory Days. The young stallion’s first top level winner emerged from his second crop, courtesy of Vernichey claiming the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship at the expense of Gr2 Debutante victress Ecstatic Green and the ultra-talented War Of Athena. Rascallion, who finished an eye-catching third in the Gr3 Cape Nursery on debut prior to the start of the Covid-19 lockdown, has now reeled off two wins from as many starts and looks well above average, whilst another colt One Way Or Another recently made an auspicious start to his

Since the start of the new racing season on August 1, Vercingetorix has already sired 22 individual winners, amongst which an unprecedented four-timer at Kenilworth. Currently in sixth position on the General Sires log, he leads the way on percentage of winners to runners, his impressive 34.4% being far in excess of any of the other top 20 stallions. Immensely popular since his retirement, Vercingetorix has enjoyed full support from breeders, to the extent that he has covered full books of mares these past three years, with demand for his services far outstripping the number available. His

early success on the track has also spilled over into the sales ring, with a number of his progeny having reached the seven-figure mark. For now, Vercingetorix appears to be the sole heir apparent to his illustrious sire, as Bold Silvano’s stud career was brought to an end by fertility problems in 2018, whilst champion Hawwaam has been exported. With three crops yet to represent their sire on the track, we can but hope that there will be at least another stallion prospect lurking amongst them!

Champion jockey Frankie Dettori has admitted the decision to call time on champion Enable’s career on Monday left him quite tearful. Still at the peak of his powers, the popular rider said he cried, particularly as he was caught a little off-guard given Enable was widely expected to have one more start, probably on British Champions Weekend. After an anti-climatic end to a dazzling career where a bog track destroyed any hope she had of creating history as a three-time Arc winner, Dettori had bonded deeply with one of Europe’s most successful mares ever, having ridden Enable in all but one – her first – of 15 career wins, almost all at the top level. According to theguardian.com, Dettori reflected: “I had to emotionally accept it (her sudden retirement). But I woke up this morning, I was fine. Now that I know that she’s safe and she’s gone, I’m able to slowly be touched by emotions and just look at the wider picture.” In a touching tribute Dettori said: “She’s done so brilliant for all of us and I love her. I’m never going to forget her.
I went to see her this morning. We had a tremendous journey for three-and-a-half, four years. She was the horse that most touched my heart.” Enable will be covered early next year by Invincible Spirit sire-son Kingman, a fitting choice for the turf’s Queen. Douglas Erskine Crum, CEO of Juddmonte, said: “After consulting her trainer John Gosden and his racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe, Prince Khalid has decided that Enable will be retired from racing and will now join the Juddmonte broodmare band to be covered by Kingman in 2021.” Enable retires having won 15 of her 19 career starts, including 11 Gr1’s. Earlier this summer she became the first horse to win a third King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Qipco Stakes at Ascot, while her big-race haul also includes the Oaks at Epsom, the Irish Oaks, two Yorkshire Oaks’ and the Coral-Eclipse. Enable accumulated record earnings for a European-trained horse of £10.7 million during five seasons and in 2018

became the only horse to win the Arc and the Breeders’ Cup Turf in the same year. Having finished second to Waldgeist when bidding for the Arc hat-trick last season, the daughter of Nathaniel was kept in training as a six-year-old in the hope of going one better. And while she ultimately came up short in testing conditions in Paris, she will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the greats. Grimthorpe said: “She has brought so much joy to everyone who has been involved with her. Her elegance and forceful personality have been nurtured by John and his team at Clarehaven, especially by Imran who has looked after her with such calm and devotion. “In her, Frankie found a willing partner to execute her ability on the racecourse. Her CV withstands the closest of inspections, very few can match what she has given to racing.”

The Lancaster Bomber offspring continue to catch the eye and light the sky and here’s another smashing colt by the Drakenstein Stud-based son of War Front. Born on 10 September, he is a first foal of the stakes performed Trippi mare, Miss Katalin, who was also victorious in the CTS Ready To Run Stakes. Miss Katalin is the daughter of the Gr1 winning Jet Master mare, Little Miss Magic. The colt’s sire Lancaster Bomber is a son of International Sire and Sire of Sires War Front. He was Champion Older Horse in Ireland in 2018 and Gr1 winner of the Tattersalls Gold Cup in one of the fastest times in the history of the race.

The la�er made it three wins in a row when scoring a courageous win over 1600m. Now a four �me winner, the four-year-old Elusive Force is trained by Paul Peter. A son of Lope De Vega was the star turn when selling for 675,000 guineas on a remarkable second day on Tuesday of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, which saw nine lots sell for 300,000 guineas or more, taking the two-day total to fourteen, three more than last year’s three-day total.

Anthony Stroud continued his buying spree on the second day of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, securing the Lope De Vega colt out of the Galileo mare Loch Ma Naire for 675,000 guineas.
800 lots will go under the hammer across the 3 sessions, with bloodhorse.com noting that the six-figure momentum from the recent Book 1 is likely to keep rolling.
“He is bred on a successful cross – Lope De Vega ex Galileo – he is an attractive horse and beautifully bred, and Lope De Vega has done incredibly well,” said Stroud, after buying on behalf of Godolphin. With the global bloodstock industry perhaps better insulated than expected since the onset of COVID-19, particularly at the top end of the market, fireworks are expected for several sought after lots across Tattersalls October Yearling Sale (Books 2 to 4) this week.
Tattersalls marketing director Jimmy George enthused, “It would be fair to say that Book 1 went an awful lot better than people either feared or expected. It was 20% down on turnover, which, by global standards, is a huge result compared to what we’ve seen so far, and the average and median were down less than that to levels of 2015-16.” George added, “I think it was a measure of the quality of the horses, the reputation of the sale in terms of being

targeted specifically by buyers who were restricted, or felt restricted in the number of sales they could attend, and various factors at play.” Market buoyancy has been bolstered by new and emerging buyers as well as the unimpeded influence of the Gulf region. From a US and southern hemisphere perspective, George also confirmed, “The Americans were fantastic again, and that’s success driven—as is the focus of Australian interests, who were very busy through the week, and that will hopefully filter into Book 2 as well.” Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continued with the third and final session this morning.
