Belgarion looks tough to beat on Saturday

RIGHT ROYAL RACING The running of the 160th Queen’s Plate and fifth year of the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Racing Festival behind closed doors at Kenilworth on Friday and Saturday takes the Cape Summer Season to the next level in extraordinary times. With the recent step back to lockdown level 3 protocols, racing is just one of the many pursuits impacted upon. Gone is the elegance of blue and white, best dressed and best hat competitions, set amidst the relaxed Friday garden party and the splendour of Saturday. But the horses are still in the spotlight and on Saturday eight runners go to post for South Africa’s premier weight-for-age mile test, with Justin Snaith looking to continue his sizzling home summer as he saddles

half the field. Snaith’s quartet includes his 2019 winner Do It Again and the former SA Champion also fields recent Gr2 WSB Green Point Stakes winner Belgarion – who produced a sensational seasonal debut and is unbeaten from three starts over the course and distance. Now a 6yo, Do It Again comes in off three placed efforts in the SA Champions Season, and while winless since the 2019 Durban July, could bounce back under Anton Marcus – a man who has a 50% strike rate in this mile over the last decade. Snaith’s 3yo Jet Dark was a fast finishing fourth in the recent Cape Guineas and the son of Trippi looks to emulate the only other 3yo winner of the Queen’s Plate this century.

3

Eric Sands’ Rainbow Bridge, who ran third behind Vardy last year, producing a decent return when he ran a 0,40 lengths third behind Belgarion in the Green Point. A trifle unlucky, he was held up for a run between the 400m mark and the 300m mark there and the son of Ideal World, who put up a reasonable public gallop recently at Kenilworth, should strip much fitter on Saturday. Sean Tarry won this race three year’s running with Legal Eagle and he brings the game Cirillo to the party. Gavin Lerena takes the ride and on course form the son of Pomdoro must have a trifecta chance. Follow all the latest LQP news on www.sportingpost.co.za

A ROYAL PICK 6 Saturday’s Kenilworth Pick 6 boasts a carryover of R3 million. The exotic starts in the fourth at 14h10 and the pool is expected to reach R10 million.

Superstar Summer Pudding has her first start in the Cape on Saturday

PUDDING TAKES ON QUEEN The Darling of the South African turf, Summer Pudding, is doing well at Milnerton in preparation for the Gr1 Cartier Paddock Stakes over 1800m at Kenilworth on Saturday but trainer Paul Peter admitted the defending champion Queen Supreme was the horse to beat.

Summer Pudding has a wide draw but this is the norm for her.

He told www.goldcircle.co.za’s David Thiselton that: “Summer Pudding is fresh and bright and eating well but this will most definitely be her toughest task to date. It is her first run in the Cape and her first time around a left- hand turn but she does seem to be taking to the Cape.”

Warren Kennedy, in accordance with the lockdown restrictions, has chosen to ride in the Cape for the month of January especially for this ride.

Peter continued, “I am scared of Queen Supreme. She has been very impressive in her last two starts and is perfectly course and distance suited. She is the horse to beat.”

Peter said, “It might be a blessing. They have the Cape crawl here so better to be in the open where you can go as quickly as you want rather than boxed in.”

Peter said, “Warren has sacrificed a lot to be here, he loves this filly. He rode her in a grass gallop last Wednesday. She galloped with Heart Stwings and they both went very well.” Summer Pudding will be attempting to make it ten out of ten, which will put her just one short of the unbeaten record of eleven set by Homeguard in the late

5

1960’s. Queen Supreme runs in the same familiar black and yellow colours of the Oppenheimer family, which are officially owned by their Mauritzfontein Stud farm these day. Heart Stwings is also in the Paddock Stakes and Peter is hoping for a place. He said: “She is thriving here in the Cape and ran way above her rating when a half-a-length second in the Victress Stakes last time (same course and distance as the Paddock Stakes). She is a natural handy or front-running type and if she had sat closer to Silvano’s Pride last time she might have even got closer. I am hoping she will run into the money.”

Dual Paddock Stakes winner, Olympic Duel

TRUE

PADDOCK POWER!

It is hard to believe that it is more 30 years ago since the brilliant racemare Olympic Duel claimed the 1990 Gr1 Paddock Stakes, a race she would go on to capture the following year. The sister to July winning champion Dancing Duel was one of the finest

racemares ever to set foot on a South African racetrack, and, unlike many champion fillies, Olympic Duel has also gone on to make her mark at stud as well. Olympic Duel, who was sired by top broodmare sire Dancing Champ, was an official South African champion three

7

seasons running. Her seven Gr1 scores included triumphs over males in all of the J&B Met, Champion Stakes and Mainstay International, also finishing runner up in the 1990 Rothman’s July and Queen’s Plate.

Retired to stud, Olympic Duel produced a trio of stakes winners headed by Gr1 Daily News 2000 winner Flying Duel (Foveros), as well as the stakes winning dam of Gr1 Gold Cup winner, and champion, Thundering Star (Fort Wood). Her Java Handicap winning daughter Supreme Duel (Royal Chalice) ranks as the dam of three black type winners - notably the graded stakes winning females Supreme Sunset (Western Winter) and Northern Heritage (Western Winter). The champion, whose dam Mashka (New South Wales) was South Africa’s Broodmare Of The Year in both 1991 and 1992, was directly descended in female line from one of the most important broodmares in the stud book – Double Life (Bachelors Double). Herself winner of the Cambridgeshire, Double Life founded a remarkable dynasty of her own, with her own progeny headed by the likes of Casanova (Dewhurst Stakes), and successful sires Persian Gulf

(Coronation Cup) and Precicpitation (Gold Cup). (Persian Gulf would also make his mark in South Africa as the sire of six times South African champion sire Persian Wonder).

Gold Standard, who is out of Olympic Duel’s daughter Olympic Dam (Model Man), is a half-brother to Spook Express Handicap runner up Gottalottalov.

Double Life also ranks as the third dam of triple classic winning filly Meld (Alycidon) –whose son Charlottown (Charlottesville) captured the 1966 Epsom Derby. Other notable members of this family include Twice A Prince (second to Secretariat in the 1970 Belmont Stakes), Judicate (Irish St Leger) and Shahtoush (Epsom Oaks).

The bay has seven members of his first crop on offer at the 2021 Cape Premier Yearling Sale, with Gold Standard also represented at this year’s Cape Yearling Sale in February. It will be interesting to see what mares Gold Standard fares well with, with his female line having enjoyed success when mated to Western Winter, Var and Fort Wood among others.

Olympic Duel’s grandson Gold Standard (Trippi) could further enhance his remarkable granddam’s record in the coming seasons. A fine poster boy for the Cape Yearling Sale (he was knocked down for R725 000 at the 2015 Val De Vie Yearling Sale), Gold Standard captured both the Gr2 Selangor Cup and Racing Association Stakes at three, when he also finished runner up, to William Longsword, in the 2016 Gr1 Cape Guineas.

Atyaab returns to Kenilworth on Saturday

ATTIE’S ON THE ROAD AGAIN What have Summer Pudding, Golden Ducat and Atyaab got in common as we count down to Saturday’s L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate Festival? The three Gr1 winners are the only mounts of Winning Form’s reigning SA Champion jockey Warren Kennedy on day 2 of the premier racing festival. While Summer Pudding and Golden Ducat are well established stars, there will be plenty of hometown interest from Port Elizabeth in their newsmaking hero Atyaab, aka Attie, who makes the nine hour journey with Choice Carriers from his Fairview home base to Milnerton on Friday afternoon, to contest the Grade 3 Okapi Chairman's Cup.

After his arduous journey North in November to contest the WSB Summer Cup, Attie came away with his reputation and fan base intact after finishing ten lengths in sixth place behind SA Horse Of The Year, Summer Pudding. The run was a meritorious effort, given the fact that he hadn’t raced in over nine months.

building his fitness in the interim,” Ziets told the Sporting Post on Wednesday.

This weekend he travels a 25% shorter trip at sea level.

“He finished third behind class-record time winner Doublemint in last year’s renewal. It’s a conditions race and he is well weighted. He is the only Gr1 winner in the field. We are going out fighting and competitive and we are living on a prayer!” declared Ziets.

And he is right as rain for Saturday, according to his enthusiastic conditioner, Zietsman Oosthuizen, who says proudly that Warren Kennedy’s agent phoned for the ride. “We decided not to race him at Fairview and have kept him ticking over and

His charge is quoted at 13-2 with Hollywoodbets for Saturday – Ziets says one can make a strong argument for his charge, a Gr1 winner at Kenilworth in his 3yo season.

Running Brave storms home under Muzi Yeni to beat Expressfromtheus With bold plans to travel South for the Cape Met later this month, World Sports Betting-sponsored Randjesfontein trainer Fanie Bronkhorst made a sparkling start to his new career when he saddled the gutsy mare Running Brave to win the R125 000 Gr3 London News Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday – a race run annually in honour of a chestnut champion whose victory in Hong Kong’s Gr1 Queen Elizabeth 11 Stakes in 1997 opened the international doors for SA racing in the post-political era. Bronkhorst, who only took out his owner-trainer licence recently and saddled his first runner on 5 December, celebrated a sensational first winner on Saturday when the recent WSB Gauteng Summer Cup runner-up powered home under Muzi Yeni as a 2-1 favourite to withstand a dogged challenge from the improving Expressfromtheus and win by three

quarters of a length in a time of 109,99 secs. Bred by Summerhill Stud, the big-hearted Running Brave is a daughter of The Fort Stud’s Brave Tin Soldier (Storm Cat) out of the Jet Master mare Movingandgrooving and cost just R30 000 off the National 2yo Sale. She has won 8 races with 12 places from 30 starts for stakes of R1 700 274. Fanie clearly fancied Running Brave’s chances in the WSB Summer Cup. “After a shaky start, her prep all came together in the final two weeks and being beaten by champion Summer Pudding, with the rest well behind, was no mean feat!” says the proud 38 year old as he looks ahead to a possible bid on the Cape Met. Hollywoodbets have the Brave Tin Soldier mare listed at 20-1 in their Cape Met ante-post.

14

“We plan to travel ten days before the race with Choice Carriers,” adds Fanie as he concedes that the long Kenilworth summer straight is not ideal for his talented flagbearer. “But on the flipside, the left-handed turn will help her to settle better I believe,” he says positively, confirming Muzi Yeni will ride – ‘if he can travel’. In terms of the current jockey travel protocols, Yeni, who with his trainer has acknowledged that Running Brave is no easy ride, rode at the Vaal on Tuesday, so is currently technically out of the Met candidate jockey pool. It’s funny how things work in racing. Paul Matchett, who has mentored Fanie for the past 30 months, also enjoyed a great day at the office on Saturday and the duo were able to pose for a rare special moment

The competitive Fanie was also a promising talent on the rugby fields – turning out for Tukkies as a centre and fullback before injuries put paid to that passion.

student-teacher pic with their loads of silverware. Matchett’s star 3yo filly War Of Athena won the Gr3 Three Troikas Stakes earlier in the day. A man whose current stature belies his early dreams of becoming a jockey, Fanie Bronkhorst grew up in a racing family in Kathu, the iron-ore capital of the Northern Cape Province. “My family were all involved in racing and my father and grandfather owned horses that raced in Kimberley and Bloemfontein. And just after finishing school in the year 2000 I worked with the late Peter Miller for a year as a stable employee. I originally wanted to be a jockey, but grew too big, and have wanted to train since a young age.”

charges.

He then drifted away from racing for a while as his company Sonador Building Projects took up his time after its founding in 2006. A great stress-antidote for the modern business word, he continued to pursue his love for horses, training and riding endurance horses – a discipline in which he holds Springbok colours. While he has made a storming start, Fanie is restricted to an owner-trainer licence until the end of this season. That means he can only train his own horses. He currently has one barn at Randjesfontein, where he houses his 25

“Only six of the 25 are older horses, so I will be taking things slowly. When I can open my doors to outside owners at end July, I hope to expand. There is only one way to run a racing stable, and that is on a business basis. I have been very fortunate to have learnt from the best in the game!” he smiles. Away from racing, family man Fanie is married to Dezr. They have two children in Kayla (9) and Reghardt (7). Let’s hope we get to see the perpetual motion machine Running Brave taking on the big guns in the Cape Met on 30 January. In this age, horseracing desperately needs more fairytales!

Rafeef's daughter Bella Chica makes history for her champion Dad

ICEBREAKERS‌

RAFEEF & RED RAY ARE FLYING! The emergence of a new crop of juveniles never fails to add fizz to racing and this past week, we saw two 'first crop' stallions register their very first winners. Rafeef, an Australian-bred son of supersire Redoute's Choice and former South African Horse of the Year and champion sprinter National Colour, excelled at four in the Shadwell colours when successful in the Gr1 Computaform Sprint and Gr2 Hawaii Stakes. Based at Ridgemont-Highlands, he was the first to break his duck as a sire when his Ashley Fortune-trained daughter Bella Chica won at

Turffontein over 1000m on the very last day of 2020. A close-up third on debut, the Klawervlei-bred filly showed plenty of zip in her second start and despite drifting in the latter stages, she lasted long enough to hold on for victory. She was bred to be precocious, as her dam War Path is a daughter of the late champion Captain Al, who had no peer when it came to siring precocious two-year-olds and led the juvenile sires list for eight straight years. Rafeef has a sizeable crop of juveniles to go to war with and now that he is off the mark, look out for placed runners Star

Of The West and Civil Rights, both of which should find the number one box sooner rather than later. Fellow sprinter Red Ray didn't waste any time either and he rang in the new year with his first winner, courtesy of juvenile son Global Glory landing the 1000m opener at Greyville on Sunday. His sire's first and only runner to date, the Mike Miller-trained chestnut built on his debut third at the track. Sadly, it was the colt's South African swansong, as he will enter quarantine next week en route to Mauritius. A philosophical Miller remarked: "That's business. Red Ray is going to be

Red Ray’s son Global Glory storms home up the outside to win his second start alright though, I like his progeny and must get my hands on more of them!" Bred by Waterford Stud, Global Glory is the first winner out of the National Emblem mare Friday's Child, who showed little on the track unlike her dam, the Michaelmas Handicap victress and Gr2 Golden Slipper second Child Model. Bred by Lammerskraal Stud, Red Ray mixed it up with the best in a career

spanning four seasons and was rewarded with Gr1 honours in the Mercury Sprint. He is the latest son of champion Western Winter to taste success as a stallion and for those not familiar with his pedigree, is out of the blue hen mare Nacarat, who produced no less than six stakes winners. She was a regular consort of Western Winter and rightly so, for in addition to Red Ray, that coupling also yielded his Gr1

20

winning sister Nania, the Gr2 winners Brutal Force and Bishops Bounty as well as the Listed winner Valor Red and Gr3-placed Vermilion. Initially retired to Klawervlei, Red Ray relocated to the famed Vogel Vlei Stud in 2018. Once home to a host of powerhouse stallions, with names like Fairthorn, High Veldt and Plum Bold readily coming to mind, here's hoping some of that magic rubs off on its latest incumbent!

Catch Twentytwo powers home under Gavin Lerena to beat stablemate MK’s Pride

PETER’S 1-2

Trainer Paul Peter underlined the strength of his 3yo crop this term when he dominated matters in Saturday’s R125 000 Gr3 Tony Ruffel Stakes at Turffontein with a repeat of his Dingaans exacta of Summer Day last year. The race was won in a marginally slower time than the fairer sex a half hour earlier.

The Peter duo of MK’s Pride and Catch Twentytwo were always dominant and even though Warren Kenney looked to stretch his opposition at the 350m, the 2-1 favourite Catch Twentytwo was going the better and he surged forward to beat MK’s Pride (7-2) by a half length in a time of 86,95 secs – marginally slower than the fillies’ five horse equivalent.

on the afternoon. A R120 000 National Yearling Sale purchase, the winner is by former SA champion stayer Elusive Fort (Fort Wood) out of the one-time winning Argonaut mare, Ignition Lady. A winner of 3 races with 2 places from 7 starts, Catch Twentytwo has earned R228 250.

This was the Peter yard’s third winner

The Merits Catch Twentytwo remains unchanged on a rating of 116, after he got the better of stable companion MK’s Pride to win the G3 Tony Ruffel Stakes. The handicappers believed that MK’S

Pride made for the best line horse, which has Catch Twentytwo running below his mark of 116, achieved when he beat MK’S Pride by a considerably bigger margin in the Gr2 Dingaans over 1600m at the same venue in late November. 3rd placed Copper Mountain is up from 100 to 109, while 4th finisher Eliud is up from 93

23

to 102. The only other increase was for Bartholdi, who is up from 82 to 87. Two horses received a ratings drop. Bingwa is down from 111 to 106, while Flying Carpet was dropped from 103 to 96.

Lyle Hewitson steers Sovereign Secret to victory

2021 OPENER FOR SNAITH Justin Snaith and Kuda-sponsored Lyle Hewitson opened the South African feature programme for 2021 in fluent style at Fairview on Friday when the beautifully-bred Sovereign Secret surged to a commanding victory in the R85 000 Listed Lady’s Bracelet. At the first Fairview meeting on turf for close on four months, the Cape raiders dominated proceedings, winning five of the eight races on the public holiday card. It was something of an ironic show of strength at the start of a month where leading riders, like four-time winning Aldo Domeyer and the Gauteng-based Hewitson, are unlikely to be seen in the Eastern Cape again.

rider to get a shout in when he upset his more fancied stablemate Golden Chance (Greg Cheyne) to win the fourth on the promising Pathfork filly Step Lively who came back from a 44 week break to score. The winner was bred by veteran Highlands stud manager Stanley Bennett from the 2008 Durban July dead-heat winner, Dancer’s Daughter. But back to the feature, after being shaken up by Hewitson just through the 400m, Sovereign Secret (5-2) drew away to beat former stablemate Sailing Ship (13-2) by 3,50 lengths in a time of 97,69 secs. Consistent Alan Greeff mare Wallis Simpson (8-1) came out of the pack to secure third, a further 0,25 lengths back.

The winner, a R1 million Cape Premier Yearling Sale purchase races for Pete and Janet Carolin, and was recording her first black-type success and only her second win from 13 starts with 5 places. She has earned just under R900 000. Bred by Klawervlei, she has the makings of a magnificent broodmare prospect. She is by champion Dynasty (Fort Wood) out of six time winning Captain Al champion, All Is Secret. Aldo Domeyer and Candice Bass-Robinson enjoyed a great day with four winners, even if their feature hope Gimme Gimme Gimme ran well below expectations.

Charles Ndlovu was the only local

The Merits Sovereign Secret has seen her rating raised from 94 to 100, after she easily won the Listed Lady’s Bracelet. Runner-up Sailing Ship, who easily won a Listed race on the only other occasion that she raced

on the Fairview grass, was used as the line horse and as such remains unchanged on 95. 3rd finisher Wallis Simpson is up from 91 to 92, while Cruise Along and Bell Tower both go up from 82 to 85. No other horse was given an increase, but there were ratings drops for

26

numerous horses. Princess Kalisi is down from 95 to 94, Luna Wish drops from 98 to 96, Gimme Gimme Gimme was trimmed from 89 to 88, Second Request is down to 81 from 85, and Seeking Wisdom was dropped from 93 to 91.

War Of Athena storms home under Muzi Yeni to beat Anything Goes

WAR RAGES ON Paul Matchett’s Act Of War filly War Of Athena turned the tables on her undefeated arch-rival Anything Goes, when she showed the benefit of superior race fitness to win the R100 000 Gr3 Three Troikas Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday. In a quality five horse field, all eyes were on Stuart Pettigrew’s unbeaten-in-five Anything Goes, who was having her first run since winning the Gr2 Joburg Fillies And Mares Spring Challenge over 1450m on 3 October.

The Merits War Of Athena had her rating raised from 116 to 120 after she won the Gr3 Three Troikas Stakes. It was 3rd placed Caralluma who was used as the line horse, which leaves her on a mark of 103.

She had been withdrawn from the Emperors Palace Ready To Run Cup so she clearly has had her issues – but full marks to Muzi Yeni and the bargain buy War Of Athena. After Caralluma had made the running, War Of Athena and top weight Anything Goes locked horns briefly down the rail – but in receipt of a kilo, War Of Athena (17-10) was full of enthusiasm and she gunned clear to beat Anything Goes (2-1) by 1,75 lengths in a time of 86,73 secs.

A R30 000 buy from the 2019 Ready To Run Sale, War Of Athena has won 5 races with 5 places from 11 starts for stakes of R576 300. Bred by Summerhill, War Of Athena is by Act Of War, one of the very best sons of deceased SA Horse Of The Year, Dynasty, out of the Requiem mare, Qaphela. The SA Triple Tiara is next – 6 February at Turffontein with the running of the Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas!

Caralluma (4-1) was beaten a further 1,25 lengths into third.

The handicappers elected to make the winner the equal of runner-up Anything Goes, who was conceding War Of Athena 1 kg, and was returning from a three-month absence, and raced with a slipped saddle. Given that Anything Goes beat War Of Athena by a neck at level weights in the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes at

29

Greyville in August, it was felt that it was the fair option to have them rated as equals on 120 for the time being. The only other change was for 4th placed Sentbydestiny, who drops from 113 to 111.

DWC - SLASHED TO $26,5 MILLION The financial effects of the Covid-19 pandemic are being felt all over the world, with the Emirates Racing Authority the latest to announce significant prize-money cuts to its headline fixture, the Dubai World Cup card. The showpiece meeting, which is due to be run at Meydan on 27 March, has had $8,5 million taken off its undercard, but the World Cup itself will still be staged for $12m. In 2019 the total prizemoney for Dubai World Cup night was increased to $35m (from $30m), with the 2020 event cancelled just six days prior due to the pandemic.

The 2021 fixture will carry a prize fund of $26,5m.

The Gr2 UAE Derby, which has been won in recent years by Thunder Snow and Mendelssohn, has received the biggest cut. It will be run for $750,000 in 2021, having previously carried $2.5m. The purses for the Godolphin Mile, Dubai Gold Cup, Al Quoz Sprint and Dubai Kahayla Classic (for purebred Arabians) have all been halved. UNITED

CROWN CONTENDERS? What a turn of events the Premier League has been this season. Big spenders Chelsea have taken themselves out of the title race after slipping down to eighth in the Premier League table, while Manchester United are now being talked about as contenders to Liverpool’s crown.

league having won eight and drawn two in that period. Elsewhere, Manchester City have gone about their business quietly, sitting just four points behind leaders Liverpool and Manchester United having played a game less. Further down the table, Arsenal have resurrected their top four hopes after recording three wins in a row.

33/20 Sheffield United | Draw 22/10 | Newcastle United 18/10 (20h00) Bottom-placed Sheffield United will be desperate to stop the rot against Newcastle United on Tuesday. Chris Wilder’s side have lost 15 of their 17 matches and have made the worst start of any team to a Premier League season. Steve Bruce's men need a reaction after being winless in their past five Premier League contests.

To be fair, they've had a tough run of fixtures with their last three matches against Manchester City, Liverpool and Leicester City. The Magpies completed the double over Sheffield United last season and I’m backing them to leave Bramall Lane with maximum points.

Midlands. I'm going with my gut and backing Wolves to triumph at 15/10 – they won this fixture 3-0 last season.

11/2 Burnley | 7/2 | Manchester United 5/10 (22h15)

Manchester City reminded everyone how good they can be last weekend, humiliating Chelsea in their own backyard with a 3-1 victory. It was City’s third straight win in the Premier League, moving them to within four points of top spot with a game in hand. Brighton is next on the agenda in what looks to be an easy encounter. Pep Guardiola's side dominated this fixture last season, winning 4-0 at the Etihad and 5-0 at the Amex. There's little value on the home win, go into the Multiscores market and select 4:0, 5:0 OR 6:0 at 52/10.

Manchester United have turned a corner after a stuttering start to the season. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side have stolen a march on Tottenham, Manchester City and Chelsea to nestle alongside Liverpool at the Premier League summit. However, the acid test for where United's title ambitions stand will come when they visit a resurgent Burnley side who did the double over them last season. Sean Dyche's men are unbeaten at Turf Moor since losing 3-0 to Chelsea (O how they’d love to play them now), beating Crystal Palace, Wolves and Sheffield United, they drew with Everton. I’m expecting a tight affair here, with Both Teams to Score catching my eye at 17/20. 15/10 Wolves | 22/10 | Everton 39/20 (22h15) Wolves are without a win in four Premier League games. During that time, Nuno Espirito Santo's side have lost twice, drawn twice and fallen to 13th in the table. Everton, on the other hand, have impressively won four of their last five matches, claiming wins over Chelsea, Leicester City and Arsenal. But even though Carlo Ancelotti's men are on the up, this will be a tough test in the

Thursday 14 January 11/20 Arsenal | 31/10 | Crystal Palace 5/1 (22h00) Arsenal are starting to hit their stride which is bad news for the likes of Leicester City, Tottenham and Chelsea. After three consecutive wins and slip-ups from direct rivals, the Gunners’ hopes of finishing in the top four have been brought back to life, while calls for Mikel Arteta to be sacked have been diverted to another manager in London. Crystal Palace have produced a few upsets this term, but I can’t see them providing a shock here. Get on the home win at 11/20 and throw it into your multiples. Currently seventh, Dean Smith's Villa have been hugely impressive this season and will be a hard nut to crack for Jose Mourinho’s team. The Villans have been punching above their weight, securing impressive wins at Leicester City, Arsenal and Wolves as well as famously thrashing champions Liverpool 7-2. Even during their 2-1 defeat at Manchester United last time out, they gave a really good account of themselves. Tottenham are faltering in their charge for the Premier League title and are without a victory in their last four away games. It might be a bold call, but my money will be on Villa at 18/10.
