Kommetdieding - the Klawervlei Farm Sale race was the start

ANOTHER KOMMET IN THE WINGS?

The R200 000 GG Gaming Klawervlei Farm Sale Graduate Race, won in 2020 by Kommetdieding, tops the billing at Durbanville in an unusual Sunday slot this weekend.

Delayed during lockdown and only run in June last year, this was the race that launched the meteoric rise of local star Kommetdieding, when he sauntered to a debut victory on a chilly day in June at Kenilworth.

Won in the inaugural year by Sean Tarry’s Rock The Globe , the third renewal reverts to Durbanville, where it will be run over 1250m. The fourteen horse field includes only one winner in Brett Crawford’s Vercingetorix colt Masked Vigilante – who broke the ice impressively at odd-on when making his debut earlier this month. The connections of the seven first-timers in Sunday’s line-up will be hoping that a

3

Kommetdieding lurks amongst them. Sharon Kotzen is the lone raiding trainer and she travels from Fairview with Normandy Stud-bred Coup De Grace colt Zacpack Assassin, who has run two reasonable seconds at home and has the edge as the jointly most experienced contestant in the field. The race is off at 16h45.

CARRYOVERS v

SOME PROGRESS!

In an attempt to provide punters with transparent information, TAB have commenced publishing a weekly table of carryovers, with ‘reserves’ displayed. On inquiry, a spokesman for TAB explained to the Sporting Post that the current total available for Pick 6 carryovers is R5 801 160. Against that reserve they have provisionally allocated three Pick 6 carryovers totalling R6 million. As it stood at 11 March there is a R200 000 shortfall and, if necessary, the amount of one of those provisional carryovers may have to be reduced to

balance the books. The current total available for Quartet carryovers is R2 848 707. Of that, R2 million has been provisionally allocated for Champions Day, but they cannot utilise much or any of the R848 707 excess because they have another R2-million carryover commitment in just over three months’ time on Vodacom Durban July.

available for a particular bet type, it will be deployed as a carryover pool on a suitable date/s etc. For example, as in the case of the Jackpot carryover on Cape Derby day. Total of sports carryovers (virtually all soccer) was R1, 9 million on 11 March, which excluded the R300 000 in carryovers allocated weekend 13-14 March.

Total of carryover monies for all other horseracing bet types like Double, Trifecta, Pick 3, Jackpot etc, but excluding the Pick 6 and Quartets is R2 163 172.

Soccer carryovers are normally allocated at the beginning of each week with similar principles to horseracing – that is, suitable dates, matches, sufficient amount to drive turnover etc.

Once there is a significant reserve amount

The online table will be updated weekly.

Muzi Yeni has Vars Vicky flying to get up late

VAR’S 53 In a timely win for his Cape Premier Yearling Sale alma mater, the progressive Vars Vicky registered his first career stakes success, and again underscored the strength of the current 3yo crop, when he made it five wins in eight starts to win the R250 000 Gr2 Senor Santa Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday. The Gary Player Stud-bred galloper cost R150 000 at the big Cape sale in 2019 and took his earnings to over R350 000 when he finished powerfully at 33-10 under Muzi Yeni to collar

VARS VICKY has had his merit rating raised from 106 to 112 following his success in the Senor Santa Sprint. The Handicappers were of the view that 4th placed EDEN ROC made for the most suitable line horse, which leaves him unchanged on a mark of 119. In rating the race this way, VARS

tamely, it was the rampant Yeni and Vars Vicky who came home full of running to win a good race – a kilo under sufferance to boot, in a thriller.

Mike de Kock’s classic disappointment of the season so far, Mount Pleasant set the pace on the outside rail, and was tracked by Bohica, Singforafa, Gallic Princess and with Vars Vicky further back.

A son of perennial speed power producer Var (Forest Wildcat) for whom he was the 53rd stakes winner, Vars Vicky, who races in the familiar silks of owner Vicky Veeramootoo, is out of the twice winning Captain Al daughter, Seminole.

With Bohica shaping like a winner inside the 250m as Mount Pleasant fell away

He has won 5 of his 8 starts with 3 places and stakes of R358 125.

The Merits

VICKY actually achieved a mark of 116. However, the specific conditions of the Senor Santa Sprint allowed only for a maximum six-pound increase for the winner and for placed horses, obliging VARS VICKY to be capped at 112. Likewise, runner-up BOHICA had his rating increased from 112 to 118

7

even though he achieved an actual rating of 122. There were no other ratings increases, but three horses were given drops. SINGFORAFA was trimmed from 119 to 118, MARDI GRAS is down from 111 to 107, and MOUNT PLEASANT drops from 120 to 114.

Savannah Storms charges to victory under Marco van Rensburg

STAR OF

SUFFERANCE!

While he hasn’t covered any mares for two years, Riverworld’s Jet Master stallion Sudden Storm is in the pink of health and produced his first stakes winner on Saturday afternoon when his 4yo son Savannah Storm won the R100 000 Listed Drum Star Handicap at Turffontein.

Trained by Phillip Vermeulen for his wife Jeannique, Savannah Storm defied every rule in the handicapper’s book when, all of 13kgs under sufferance, he comfortably disposed of Sean Tarry’s Cornish Pomodoro by three quarters of a length, to make it three wins on the trot. The Riverworld-bred gelding out of the one-time winning Jallad mare, Slinky Jalinky, made it 3 from 6 for stakes earnings of R144 000.

Riverworld’s Juan van Heerden spoke to the Sporting Post and confirmed that he is selling his farm and calling it a day with breeding.

But Sudden Storm still has four years of covering left in him in Juan’s opinion, and could be a nice option for a breeder keen to take a chance on a mostly unexposed sire that was a top-class forward galloping racehorse – and bred on the same lines as top Varsfontein sire, Master Of My Fate. “I’d love him to go to a good home where he could have another chance. He has only covered a handful of mares. He produces magnificent foals – strong boned, lovely specimens. My horse Sudden Star with the Robinsons won three on the trot and is consistent. Phillip Vermeulen astutely bought the Savannah Star family – he has two full-brothers and a full-sister to the Drum Star winner. But

9

let him tell you about them when you chat to him.” Sudden Storm was priced up an early favourite to win the Durban July in 2006, after winning 4 of his first 7 starts, including the Cape Breeders, where he set a new Kenilworth 1800m course record, and a smashing 5,50 length score in the Listed Easter Handicap at Clairwood. Juan recalls proudly that his own mare, the 2008 Gr1 Paddock Stakes winner Badger’s Gift, was to go on and break Sudden Storm’s 1800m record – and it still stands today. Sudden Storm did a tendon three weeks before the 2006 July and was off for a year. He came back and was to win again – but had lost a yard or two of his deadly

v

speed and was retired to Riverworld after a gallant swansong second in the 3200m Durbanville Cup, where he was beaten by the late Carl Burger’s subsequent Gold Vase hero, Grey Cossack. Sudden Storm retired having raced over 6 seasons for stakes of R441 950. He won 5 races and ran 11

places from his 36 starts. Juan concedes that he could probably have put more energy in to giving Sudden Storm more mares earlier on. “He is a good looking horse. He was a powerful and versatile son of Jet Master and is out of an Elliodor mare, Erin’s Chant. So the

blood is there. If any breeder wants to take a chance on him, please ask them to give me a call.” Juan may be contacted at: info@vhgroup.co.za / or chat to Handre at C(084)976 7076.

The Merits SAVANNAH STORM has seen his rating increased from 76 to 106 after he handled a steep rise in grade with a start-to-finish win in the Listed Dum Star Handicap. This sharp increase is predominantly due to the fact that SAVANNAH STORM was no fewer than 26 pounds or 13 kgs under

sufferance at the weights. It was 3rd placed YOUCANTHURRYLOVE who was used as the line horse here, leaving him unchanged on a mark of 112, while 2nd placed CORNISH POMODORO goes up from 102 to 104. PACK LEADER drops from 110 to 109, DIVINE ODYSSEY goes from 112 to

10

110, BARAHIN is down to 119 from 123, GREEN HAZE drops from 110 to 108, HERO’S HONOUR drops from 104 to 102, and lastly SEVEN PATRIOTS was trimmed from 103 to 102.

Drum Stars! Phillip Vermeulen and Marco van Rensburg celebrate the memorable moment

LOVE YOUR HORSE Family and horses are all that really matter in his life. Slightly unorthodox in his gentle approach, and a passionate horse-lover to the tips of his immaculate boots, Randjesfontein-based Phillip Vermeulen celebrated an early career maiden stakes winner at Turffontein on Saturday. Savannah Storm made a mockery of his modest rating to win the Listed Drum Star Handicap – in new class record time, nogal! Many trainers in South Africa are playing a combination of poker and chess daily with Lennon Maharaj and his not-so-merry band of NHRA handicappers, as they conspire to squeeze every last ounce of advantage from the system for their hard-pressed owners. But not Phillip Vermeulen – he threw the conventions text book out of the window on Saturday and ran the 76

rated Savannah Storm, owned by his wife Jeannique, all of 13kgs under sufferance.

first trainer and mentor – and the man who inspired his interest to train horses.

“He is a lightly raced 4yo. I have brought him along very slowly, and felt he had improved to the point where was ready to step up and show his worth on Saturday. I am thrilled it worked out and we will have to take our medicine from the handicapper,” adds Phillip philosophically.

“So to break my stakes ice by winning this race – and with a horse owned by my wife - was really very special,” he adds.

Jockey Marco van Rensburg graciously accepted the riding engagement and then had a look at the entries, believing the horse would probably not make the cut anyway. Then when he saw the final fields, he started thinking about excuses he could use afterwards! A smiling Van Rensburg was full of half embarrassed praise for Savannah Storm afterwards. Saturday’s Drum Star Handicap victory was special in more ways than one for the Vermeulen family. Phillip owned horses from the age of 25 and Roy Unsworth, the top-class Drum Star’s original trainer before Mike de Kock took over, was his

12

An almost spiritual and kind approach to training comes to the fore when chatting to Phillip. He has policies – like he won’t run a 2yo. Before horses race they enjoy a fun trip to the course on racedays to absorb the vibe and positive experience. Paddocks are important – he doesn’t believe in keeping his horses standing in their boxes all day. He feels strongly about a grasp of equine mental health. His stopwatch accompanies him all the time – “times don’t lie,” he says. Phillip tells how he trains by the guiding principles of a fascinating book – Backyard Race Horse - written by trainer Janet Del Castillo with Lois

v

It describes how to condition horses naturally at home or off-track in one’s own environment. Without medication. “It’s really mostly about a lot of common sense and plenty of respect for the horse,” adds Phillip. The book draws from De Castillo’s own experiences in transforming a $2 500 cast-off into a $300 000 earning racer and explains her natural way of training, which includes no meds, plenty of space to run, and a non-aggressive training regimen. In contrast to widely accepted outlooks, there are suggestions that the track isn't the only place to train a winning horse. The 51 year old Phillip Vermeulen grew up in Kimberley, matriculated at Helpmekaar College, and qualified as an Electrician after his compulsory military service was completed. He always had a fascination for horses and racing, and was an owner from a relatively young age. Roy Unsworth, Roy Howe, Bev Snow and Brett Warren – Phillip absorbed all he could learn and drew on the decades of experience and guidance offered by these veterans. He was originally going to be an owner-trainer, but now has an open licence and has attracted ‘two good owners’ in recent months. His first winner came courtesy of the 7yo Kings Cup, who won a modest MR 71 Handicap over 2400m under Cole Dicken at the Vaal on 22 September last year. The old boy has since won again.

“If you are in this game for the money, you are making a big mistake. I am fortunate to have the resources to live my dream.” Phillip’s current leading owner – his wife Jeannique – is also his key staffmember and assists by running the Vermeulen Racing set-up with a well established team. His children – Hannah turns 15 on Wednesday – and 11 year old Caleb, also enjoy getting involved. “What a life. We are so blessed and really have so much to be thankful for. Horses and the great outdoors. As a family we love and live it together.” Back to Saturday’s star, Savannah Storm, Phillip is monitoring how the son of Sudden Storm takes Saturday’s run. “We may look at the Horse Chestnut 1600. As long as he keeps on improving and he is happy, we will step him up again. I rate him.” Savannah Storm’s breeder Juan van Heerden was thrilled about the big victory as it was a first stakes strike for his semi-retired Jet Master stallion, Sudden Storm. “Phillip bought the whole family off Riverworld Stud. He clearly is an astute judge! I still have two of his here with me. I am so happy for him. They are in good hands,” added Van Heerden, who has

retired and given up breeding. Besides the 4yo Savannah Storm, Phillip has his 3yo chestnut full-brother My True North, as well as the 2yo sister and a yearling brother. The latter two are still in Paarl, as pointed out by Juan van Heerden. “I don’t want to put the youngster through the trauma of a long road trip to Joburg yet. But My True North is doing well – make a note of his name. He will run soon.” Phillip recalled that when Savannah Storm arrived from the Cape, he had colic and was a very sick horse. “He stepped off the float and I was very worried. But patience, TLC and the R20 000 vet bill later, he has repaid us over and over again after Saturday.” The family man is unusually positive about South Africa and horseracing’s future. “Negative energy is a wasted emotion. This is a beautiful country. There are issues all over the world. We are here – we must make this work. And for racing, I believe MOD and the new team are going to make a difference. The development of Randjesfontein is also an exciting vote of confidence in the future of the sport.”

Schwartz, and published some 28 years ago

Phillip, who bought Jurgen van Heerden’s beautiful property next door Randjesfontein when his former colleague headed South, has 10 horses and is building a new barn to accommodate the anticipated growth. But he is not in a hurry. Only 4 of his string are in training and racing, and the other 6 are ‘babies’ – and he doesn’t race 2yo’s, remember! He declares that he is in racing for the horses and the thrills of racing.

16 Louis The King’s son Pamushana's Pride wins the Listed Derby Trial last Saturday

v

17

v

Louis The King (Black Minnaloushe - Pamushana) Turffontein has been a happy hunting ground for South Africa's second Triple Crown winner Louis The King. He reserved his greatest triumphs for the Joburg track, which appropriately also features as the venue of his first Stakes success as a stallion, courtesy of the game victory of first-crop son Pamushana's Pride in last weekend's Listed Derby Trial. Trained by Alec Laird for owner/ breeder Louis van der Vyver, Pamushana's Pride was scoring for the fourth time in six starts and races in the same silks carried by his sire. Incidentally, he was bred from the Ideal World mare Ponal, whose third dam Rawl Plug is a half-sister to none other than the first Triple Crown winner, the mighty Horse Chestnut! On the track, Louis The King added to his Triple Crown by claiming the Gr1 Sansui Summer Cup at four and fully deserved his chance at stud as a triple

Gr1 winner of seven races and earnings in excess of R5-million. In addition to his Gr1 treble, he finished second in the Gr1 L'Ormarins Queen's Plate and third in the Gr1 Daily News 2000. Bred by The Alchemy and by far the best South African-bred performer sired by Irish 2000 Guineas and St James's Palace Stakes winner Black Minnaloushe, Louis The King is the only foal out of Rich Man's Gold mare Pamushana and traces to a fine old family which excelled at the long-gone Hartford Stud, that of the imported English triple winner and Princess Margaret Stakes third Anne Of Orange, who descends from the legendary race and broodmare, Pretty Polly. For what it's worth, several of the ancestors in the female line of Louis The King are inbred to this peerless mare, most notably his grandam Milden Magic, through her sire National Emblem, who traces to Pretty Polly's great-grandaughter Sister Sarah. Louis The King now holds court at Terry and Annabel Andrews' Sorrento Stud in

18

the Western Cape and to say that he has received limited support, would be an understatement. His first three crops total around 80 foals, less than those sired in a single crop by any of the most popular stallions! Unraced at two and given his own racetrack achievements, his progeny were always going to improve at three as proven by Pamushana's Pride and three-time winning daughter Princess Of Fire, both of which have shown their ability over ground. Yet it was Matthew The King who displayed precocity to become his sire's first juvenile winner and proved his sprinting ability when second to Erik The Red in the Listed Somerset 1200. As for Louis The King's second crop, he already boasts a winner in juvenile filly Waymaker, who made an auspicious debut, scoring at cramped odds for Gavin Smith. Sorrento's Annabel Andrews was

v

understandably over the moon following the Derby Trial success by Pamushana's Pride. "We expected this horse to go a trip. We foaled and raised him on behalf of Mr Van der Vyver. He was a beautiful, big foal and also the mare's first. She now has a filly foal at foot, a chestnut full sister to Pamushana's Pride, a big strong girl."

Despite receiving just R80 000 for a Louis The King filly related to Running Brave at the recent Mistico Yearling Sale, Annabel nevertheless remains upbeat: "There was quite a bit of interest and the vibe was positive. We supported him with our own mares and have some super two-year-olds on the farm if anyone is interested!"

"Louis has the most divine temperament, he is very gentle and very fertile. Sadly, he has received only limited support and has had to do it the hard way, yet his foals can run and they are so brave."

Sorrento will not be taking any Louis The King yearlings to Johannesburg for the National Sale - however he will be represented at the Klawervlei farm sale in June. As for Pamushana's Pride, the

Terry and Annabel Andrews – Sorrento Stud hosts

19

progressive three-year-old is clearly on an upward curve. Considering that his dam is an own sister to Gr3 Track and Ball Derby winner Cape Speed, hopes are high that he can go close to emulating his sire in next month's Gr1 SA Derby. He certainly has the cv and the pedigree for the task at hand.

Lyle Hewitson steers Aryaam to victory

DYNASTY FILLY

SCORES IN OAKS TRIAL

Bred and owned by Al Adiyaat South Africa, the Sean Tarry-trained Aryaam broke her maiden with a convincing win in Saturday's Listed Oaks Trial at Turffontein.

The daughter of Dynasty powered home, under a well timed ride by Lyle Hewitson, to go away and score by half a length in

a time of 125,85 secs.

The winner is out of the five time winning Asiatic Boy mare Ahlaam. The consistent Aryaam had finished second or third in each of her four previous starts, and she looks a progressive filly in the making.

The Tarry yard went close to having further feature race success on Saturday, with Cornish Pomodoro finishing second in the Listed Drum Star Handicap, and Ushuaia and Invincible Warrior finishing third and fourth respectively in Saturday's Listed Derby Trial.

The Merits ARYAAM has had her rating raised from 76 to 80 after she recorded a first career victory in the Listed Ormond Ferraris Oaks Trial. 3rd placed KEEPINGTHEPEACE was deemed to make for the best line

horse and has had her rating restored to the 79 which she ran off, having been dropped to 78 following the publication of weights for this race. The only other increase was for 2nd placed IDEAL JET, who goes from 88 to 91, while

21

three fillies were given drops. SIREN OF GREECE is down from 72 to 68, PHOENIX is down from 82 to 80, and QUEEN BOMI drops from 77 to 74.

COHEN’S GOIN’ Gauteng-based racecaller Alistair Cohen made an auspicious auctioneering debut for CTS at the 2021 Cape Premier Yearling Sale on Sunday. Slotting in as if he had been doing it all his life, Alistair replaced Graeme Hawkins, who was unable to be at the sale this year, due to his contractual obligations to Bloodstock South Africa. The young racecaller came out of the ‘trial run’ with credit. He was on the podium with veteran auctioneer Andrew Miller. Last month the 20 year old Fisokuhle ‘Fiso’ Hadebe made his gavel debut at the Mistico Cape Yearling Sale.

CHAMPS ARRIVE

The first hints of the 2021 SA Champions Season are in the air if one looks at the healthy entry for the Listed Kings Cup to be run at Hollywoodbets Greyville on 28 March. Vaughan Marshall and Sean Tarry are two names that jump out of the 28 strong entry list for the mile turf feature, although we could throw Johan Janse van Vuuren (Copper Mountain) and Dean Kannemeyer (Seventh Gear) into the mix. Supplementary entries close at 11h00 on Friday 19 March, with declarations due by 11h00 on Tuesday 23 March.

MAURITIUS DELAYED The start of the 2021 Mauritius Racing Season, scheduled for Saturday 20 March, has been postponed until further notice. Mauritius went into a two-week nationwide lockdown last week, the second time the Indian Ocean archipelago nation has imposed such a restriction since the coronavirus pandemic began a year ago. The country is in confinement until 25 March.

ONE-ARMED BANDITS Jockey Denis Schwarz is recovering at home after fracturing his right clavicle in a fall from his mount Golden Belle in Saturday’s Gr2 Senor Santa Stakes at Turffontein. In a tragic and sad incident, the Sean Tarry filly was humanely euthanased after breaking down on her right front about 100m from the post. The 21 year old Denis came down heavily and fractured his right collar-bone (clavicle). He went under the surgeon’s knife on Sunday. His Stepfather Pieter Brown said on Monday that Denis was expected to be out of action for anything between 8 to 12 weeks. Pieter explained that it has been a tough few days for the family – in an ironic twist, Denis’ 12 year old sister Abigail broke her right collar-bone on Thursday while practising on her pony for the Maple Ridge Presidents Cup.

SPARKLING! The Hollywood Syndicate’s Var first timer Shampompo Shampizi won a cracker at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday under emotional circumstances. Ridden by former SA Champion Lyle Hewitson and trained by Alyson Wright, Shampompo Shampizi (7-2) accelerated up the outside for an eyecatching first-up win, beating Lhasa Star by 1,90 lengths in a time of 61,28 secs. A large group that included Hollywood staff and family of the late Kaunda Ntunja, who was a well known rugby pundit and Xhosa rugby commentator, and named the handsome bay, was on course to enjoy the moment. The happy winner

PITBULL IS R500 000 RICHER! A Stanger-based lifetime racing fan made history on Sunday when he won the biggest competition prize ever offered in South African horseracing. The lucky punter banked the R500 000 Hollywoodbets Punters’ Challenge must-be-won bonus for selecting the most winners on the afternoon. After a dramatic climax to the Hollywoodbets Punters’ Challenge last Wednesday, when Cape Town resident Russell Boulineaux narrowly missed the R1 475 000 all-winner bonus when his selection in the final race ran fourth, the 37 year old Sandeep Lall, aka ‘Pitbull’, made no mistakes when selecting more winners on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Greyville, than all of his close on 16 000 competitors. As a once-off extra-value for the punter, the R500 000 must-be-won special was offered by Hollywoodbets for selecting the most winners on the day, on con-

dition that no punter, or punters, won the R1,5 million progressive pool prize for picking all nine winners. And no bonus points – which are calculated for the Hollywoodbets Punters’ Challenge leaderboard standings on a dividend-based winner formula – were applicable in the R500 000 must-be-won prize.

was run out of it in the last stride by longshot Foxy Lady, on whom Jarryd Samuel rode a cracker. It was heartbreak for JakesR, who was driving home when the Sporting Post phoned him. The top prize on the leaderboard was Mvundla 11, whose 151.71 points banked the R4000 cheque.

It was thus a straight number of winners, as opposed to the leaderboard standings, that counted – and an elated Sandeep was the man who came out tops, beating the field of 15 974 other players by selecting seven of the nine winners on the afternoon.

Racing returned to Hollywoodbets Greyville today where the progressive prize for a 100% winner selection stands at R1 025 000. A R10 000 must-be-won prize will be shared by the leaderboard top twenty.

There was further drama at the same venue on Monday afternoon, when player JakesR selected the first 7 winners on the card and went into the last race with a R1 million all-winner bonus prize running on favourite Hereinafter.

Greg Cheyne has Viking Moon in control

MOON OVER FAIRVIEW The World Sports Betting East Cape Poly Challenge bonus of R250 000 is unlikely to be won in 2021 after the impressive young out-and-out sprinter Viking Moon cruised to victory in the R80 000 opening leg over 1200m at Fairview on Friday.

The Birch Bros bred galloper strode away to beat surprise package Wolfgang (16-1) by three quarters of a length in a time of 69,58 secs “He pegged his ears back and he was always going to run them off their feet late,” said a pleased Greg Cheyne, who rode three winners on the afternoon.

Starting a well-supported odds-on favourite, the good looking Viking Moon showed his class on his return from a 15 week break to make it four wins on the trot, and his 7th victory in fifteen starts.

Juan Nel has made an impact this term and the former Mike de Kock assistant saddled both the runner-up and the third placed What A Winner (10-1).

He is unlikely to go all the way to the mile of the third leg. Greg Cheyne settled the headstrong gelding two lengths off the leader The Highway Man and launched his attack from the box seat 350m from home.

The winner races in the silks of Frans van den Berg and took his stakes earnings to R357 000. Breeder Syd Birch told the Sporting Post at an earlier win that the cross with the Silvano stallion Vercingetorix that produced Viking Moon – with the Untouchable mare Touch The Moon – had been one of their preferred choices.

29

The second leg is the R80 000 WSB East Cape Poly Challenge 1400 (Non-Black Type) to be run over 1400m at Fairview on Friday 9 April. The challenge is wrapped up over a mile at Fairview with the running of the R80 000 WSB East Cape Poly Challenge 1600 (Non-Black Type). A bonus of R250 000 will be paid to the connections of the horse that wins all three legs of the challenge. A consolation bonus of R50 000 will be paid in this challenge to the highest points scorer, if no horses wins all three legs. To qualify, a horse must participate in all 3 legs and win at least 1 leg. Points allocation for Consolation: 1st 10, 2nd 6, 3rd 4, 4th 3, 5th 2 and 6th 1.

NADINE 30

TELLYTRACK’S LEADING LADY

v

The R85 000 Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery heads the Fairview card on Friday, and while she is a true impartial professional in every respect, Tellytrack presenter Nadine Low Ah Kee’s heart is in a victory for her adoptive hometown. The former lady jockey-turned TV star, sporting a new more efficient and ‘convenient’ hairstyle these days, is one of the most polished and professional presenters on our much maligned racing channel. She does the prep and the interviews in advance of our favourite Friday racing fun, and one doesn’t think mute when her voice hits the airwaves. “With the visitors in town, it will be very competitive again on Friday.Gavin Smith’s Miss Nibbles was both super speedy and showed a good turn of foot in above average time first time out. The champion combo of Alan Greeff and Greg Cheyne are always a factor, and while Old Glory was horribly disappointing last up, the going was sticky that day and she is a leggy filly, so can hopefully get back to best. I also have big respect for Glen Kotzen’s Jewel Of Doha - but it does look like they all have to beat the Snaith runner Europeana who on debut ran third to Gimme Dat who won the Kenilworth Fillies Nursery in her next!” Nadine was part of probably the last ‘power lady’ intake at the SA Jockey Academy. The year was 1996 and she was accompanied by Chantal Moys (now Cormack) and Danny Mcreedy (married to Sherman Brown today). Her intake also included, amongst others, Bernard Fayd’herbe and Lucas Bester, who are both still riding today. She rode her first winner for trainer Anil Maharaj, who was slightly unorthodox but taught her the fine art of pace judgement – years before technology arrived. On 11 October 1997 Nadine had her crop tied to her right wrist with an elastic and stormed to victory at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Desert Dueller, almost taking out the hot dog stand in the process! “Mr Maharaj was scared I’d drop the crop – so he strapped it to m! I was

so young and didn’t come from a horsey background, so was willing to learn. And he taught me plenty of value – like the counting to judge pace.” Nadine has an extraordinary record which

she treasures to this day– a handwritten register of every horse she ever rode – with comments! Now 40 and happily married to Gary Low Ah Kee for the past nine years,

Nadine is the oldest of two kids. Her younger brother Wayne lives in the UK. Dad Ernest passed away a few years ago and her Mom, Annette, lives in the Rapson hometown, Greytown KZN. That is further away than Nadine would choose - but she says that they chat every week. Grandad Stanley, who is 95 this year, also lives in Greytown. “Locally I am lucky to have my in-laws, Noeleen and George, and sister-in-law Yvette, that we can see regularly,” says Nadine with a smile. She rides to keep busy in her spare time. And one of the reasons she cut her hair, is her hectic exercise routines.

surrenders to change very reluctantly and always has everything planned to the last detail. All these ups and downs and curved balls have been very disorientating. Racing folk have had to deal with the double whammy of uncertainty with Covid and the massive changes in our industry.” She is now in her eighth year on Tellytrack. “There’s been mention of upgrading our production significantly, which would be great! I love my job and honestly give 100% at every meeting. There is plenty of prep work leading up to a race day behind the scenes. And I do prefer the presenting to the tipping by a vast margin! I also love the special moments when there is a story behind the winner, and though every win is special, sometimes some are just that little bit more!”

While the arrival of the Cape raiders are frowned upon in some quarters with their regular plunder of the Fairview features, Nadine feels that the presence of the Capetonians bolsters the local racing and lifts the standard. “I am looking forward to our 3 year old features this season as we have two standouts that have held their own against the Cape Raiders already. Global Drummer and Santa Therese are just two horses that have shown outstanding ability and they could well hold their own!”

there are no kids in the house – only the ‘furkids’. The Low Ah Kee residence is populated by Dexter the Boerboel, Gamble the Pitbull, Pheebs the Jack Russell, as well as her two horses - Fly Wolf and Credibility.

“I’ll play polocrosse when I get the chance - although with a lot more enthusiasm than talent. I also really enjoy cycling. I try to take my mountain bike out as often as I can. But that’s always work and weather permitting.” She adds that her favourite past-time will always be curling up with a good book. “From thrillers to romance, whodunnits to historic novels - I just love reading!” With Covid-19 hitting the racing industry so hard in the last year, Nadine says that she has fared a lot better then many, and for that she is grateful. “Living in limbo is a disconcerting feeling for a person like me that

SAEHP MD Adrian Todd – ‘situation is normalising’

EXPORTS

LIGHT ON HORIZON The long and rocky road since the ban, due to an outbreak of African Horse Sickness, on the direct import of horses from South Africa to the European Union in 2013, could be smoothing out with news last week that the SA government is in negotiations with the UK authorities. With the 2021 sales season upon us, we approached SAEHP Managing Director Adrian Todd last week for an update on the export protocol status. Todd said that the situation is normalising and gaining momentum again. “The really big announcement is that

we have been listed for a 2021 EU audit. We have been engaging with the UK for a while and post Brexit our Government opened formal negotiations. We also received official word on Thursday that the UK were amenable to furthering direct export negotiations. Our government is being really proactive in getting this finalised.” Director of Animal Health DALRRD Dr Mpho Maja has gone on record that South Africa is listed for a 2021 EU audit. “The Department has started negotiations with the UK and direct exports seem to be possible, but preceded by an audit. They

39

have undertaken to endeavour to progress the discussions regarding the audit as soon as international travel permits. The department is fully aware of the challenges faced by the equine industry and is committed to doing everything possible to secure audits to take place as soon as it is physically possible to travel,” Dr Maja added. A delighted Adrian Todd confirmed that SAEHP has received direct communications from Minister Thoko Didiza confirming our government’s commitment to securing direct equine exports. “Due to current travel restrictions, it

v

has not been possible to schedule an exact date in 2021 for the EU audit yet, but it is listed. With the UK now also announcing their openness to direct exports, things are looking up. Without COVID the 2020 audit would have taken place and we would be exporting by now. In the wake of the postponement, we explored all the options regarding a virtual audit. This however did not come to pass, given that the scope of the audit required

our trading partners want a boots on the ground inspection.” Todd reaffirmed that our system is world class, and he was confident that it will pass any audit. “I feel the message of the implications and impact the audit delay has had has reached our international trade partners. Our government is also cognisant of our issues and fully

40

committed to resolving the situation. SAEHP is vigorously pursuing both EU and UK workstreams. While the delay of the 2020 audit was a blow, I would say that to be sitting twelve months later with two audits on the horizon while we are in the midst of the largest pandemic in living memory, is not a reason to be negative.”

NATIONALS

FOUR WEEKS AWAY!

The sale season is in full swing and the 2021 BSA National Yearling Sale catalogue is now online.

This year’s National Sale will take place over two days, with South Africa’s oldest premier sale set to take place at the TBA complex in Germiston on 15 and 16 April. Former National Sale graduates have been enjoying an excellent season in 2020-2021, with the likes of Captain’s Ransom, Jet Dark, Malmoos and Rainbow Bridge all excellent advertisements for the quality of thoroughbred on offer at the National Yearling Sale.

The Varsfontein Stud bred Malmoos, the second top sold at the 2019 National Sale, made it six wins, from just seven starts when he won the recent Gr1 World Sports Betting SA Classic.

winner Jet Dark was knocked down to Nick Jonsson for R200 000 at the 2019 National Yearling Sale. Excitingly, Jet Dark has a Futura half-brother (Lot 151) on offer at this year’s National Sale!

Star filly Captain’s Ransom was a R225 000 buy from the 2019 National Sale, and she has gone on to win five of her first six starts including both the Gr1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas and Gr1 Majorca Stakes this season.

This year’s National Sale will also seeing half-siblings to Horse Of The Year champions Do It Again and Legal Eagle (both previous National Sale graduates) among the catalogue.

Dual Met winner Rainbow Bridge, who has earned more than R7.293 million in stakes, was a R300 000 purchase from the 2016 National Sale, while this season’s Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate

Rachael holds the Champion Hurdle Trophy

RACHAEL’S CHELTENHAM HISTORY Rachael Blackmore made racing history as she became the first female jockey to win the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham on Tuesday with victory on Honeysuckle.

Last year's runner-up Sharjah was second again, with the 2020 winner Epatante in third.

The Irish rider coolly guided the 11-10 favourite to win by six and a half lengths for trainer Henry de Bromhead.

Despite the meeting being held without spectators, Honeysuckle and her jubilant rider were given a rousing reception into the winner's enclosure by those in attendance.

It was an 11th successive victory for the unbeaten mare, and a landmark win for her 31-year-old jockey.

Appreciate It was a 24-length winner of the Supreme Novices' Hurdle while Shishkin won the Arkle Chase by 12

45

lengths and veteran Vintage Clouds took the Ultima Chase. Meanwhile, the 80-1 outsider Jeff Kidder caused a shock in the Juvenile Handicap Hurdle, while Denise 'Sneezy Foster - who has stepped in for Elliott during his suspension - had her first Festival winner, with Black Tears in the Mares' Hurdle.

v

AND DAY TWO DAWNS… Day two of the Cheltenham Festival is run today and features seven fantastic races. The feature event is the Gr1 Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase, which looks set to be yet another thrilling renewal. Everyone loves a superstar grey and last year’s popular winner Politologue will be bidding to retain his crown for Paul Nicholls and John Hales after his poignant success 12 months ago. He’s likely to face a legion of

challengers though, including a dual winner of the race in Altior and an emerging trio of First Flow, Nube Negra and Chacun Pour Soi. The supporting card features two novice events with a fine record for producing stars of the future in the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle and the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase, while the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase is also on the bill. The race is like no other at The Festival™, being run on a specialist course that features unique obstacles and potentially throwing up a mouth-watering rematch

between Easysland and the dual Randox Grand National hero Tiger Roll. Russian Emperor(left) works recently – a big runner

KARIS EYES HONG KONG DERBY

Mauritian-born SA Jockey Academy graduate Karis Teetan is on track for his first Hong Kong Derby triumph and believes impeccably-bred Dougie Whyte Russian Emperor is capable of delivering a breakthrough success at Sha Tin on Sunday. By Irish super sire Galileo out of champion Australian mare Atlantic Jewel, Russian Emperor charged to the line when second over 1800m in the Hong Kong Classic Cup behind Healthy Happy on 21 February, fuelling Teetan’s belief the Ascot Gr3 winner is ready to fire. “I’m looking forward to the Derby this season, I would say this could be my best Derby ride since I got to Hong Kong,” the Mauritian said of Douglas Whyte’s charge. “I’m excited and looking forward to it.

“Of course, it’s going to be interesting for Douglas, too. For a new trainer to have a horse like that in the Derby is pretty interesting. “Hopefully, we do well, his trial was good last week and so we’re looking forward to it.” Teetan’s best Hong Kong Derby finish so far is eighth – a position attained by Thunder Fantasy (2015) and also Amazing Beats (2020). Winner of the Gr3 Hampton Court Stakes (1993m) at Ascot on 17 June, 2020, Russian Emperor improved significantly in the Hong Kong Classic Cup to emerge as one of the leading Derby contenders. The gelding clocked a race-best 22.31s for the final 400m, sweeping from 10th to fail by a neck.

48

“He’s another European horse who has progressively improved with time and with each and every work out and race that I’ve given him.I think his last run was probably the fittest I’ve ever had him and the result suggested that,” Whyte added. The 97-rater, who is still a colt, is one of two gallopers by super sire Galileo in Hong Kong, both are under the care of Whyte and both are former O’Brien trainees. The other is Ode To Joy, a two-time winner in Ireland prior to export. “He’s (Russian Emperor) a really kind and gentle horse – he has the right frame of mind for a colt, there’s no nastiness about him and he’s very eager and willing to do whatever you ask of him,” Whyte said.

SOWETO DERBY TIME! 51

v

The biggest derby in the country will once again divide the nation as Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates lock horns in the Soweto derby! The Glamour Boys have already tasted defeat to Josef Zinnbauer’s Buccaneers three times this season, so a fourth loss against their bitter rivals will not only highlight their disastrous campaign, but Pirates will be able to rub it in their faces for many years to come. Will this tie swing in Pirates’ favour once again, or can Chiefs spring an upset against their crosstown nemesis? Let’s find out, shall we. DStv Premiership | Sunday 21 March | FNB Stadium | 15h00 To win Kaizer Chiefs 24/10 Draw 43/20 Orlando Pirates 5/4 Kaizer Chiefs Jesse Nagel writes that it’s been a difficult season for Kaizer Chiefs this term with reports now suggesting that Gavin Hunt has been handed an ultimatum to finish in the top eight or at least progress to the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League. Both feats seem like ridiculous tasks at hand, but with Hunt’s experience and the quality Amakhosi have at their disposal, they should be able to climb up the top half of the DStv Premiership at the very least. Domestically, Kaizer Chiefs are winless in seven games, which include six ties without victory in the league, while they were also dumped out of the Nedbank Cup to GladAfrica Championship side, Richards Bay FC.

There hasn’t been much to brag about from the Amakhosi camp, although, despite their long-standing run of results without victory, the Glamour Boys have been able to find the back of the net on a regular basis, but a lapse in concentration at the back, coupled with a few goalkeeping howlers have let Hunt’s side down big time. Samir Nurkovic has scored just once – a gift from the AmaZulu defence – while Bernard Parker is yet to score all season. Leonardo Castro has had to carry the burden this season but also has just three league goals to his name. Chiefs don’t have much of a chance on paper, but as we’ve seen in previous derbies, no team can be cheaply written off before the match. Orlando Pirates Orlando Pirates will look to do what has never been done before and beat their Soweto rivals four times in the same season. Its not only the results over Kaizer Chiefs that have been impressive, but also the manner in which Zinnbauer’s side have gone about their business, beating them 5-0 on aggregate in the MTN8, while Pirates also humbled Chiefs to a 2-1 defeat at Orlando Stadium. After a slow start, Orlando Pirates have now found their way again and are crushing teams at will. In the domestic competitions, Pirates are on a six-game unbeaten run, drawing only to SuperSport United in Pretoria. In that run, the Buccaneers beat Cape Town City, Maritzburg United, Bloemfontein Celtic and Chippa United, which has seen them back amongst the frontrunners for the CAF Champions League spots.

With Zinnbauer now in a rich vein of form, pressure has been eluded from the German with the club now looking the way they were in his first full year in charge. The German’s biggest downfall is arguably the rotation in his team selection. Siphesihle Ndlovu has shown glimpses of his brilliance, but the role he has played in has come under immense scrutiny. So too with Linda Mntambo. The leggy midfielder has played his way back into the team and after ‘Figo’ scored against Chiefs earlier this season as well, his late runs into the box could definitely be utilized again. Probable line-ups: Kaizer Chiefs: 4-2-3-1 Akpeyi; Frosler, Mathoho, Cardoso, Zulu; Katsande, Ngcobo; Kambole, Manyama, Mashiane; Nurkovic Orlando Pirates: 4-3-3 Ofori; Ndlovu, Hlatshwayo, Jele, Mako; Makaringe, Monare, Motshwari; Pule, Mntambo, Hotto Prediction: Orlando Pirates (5/4) As far as picking a winner in the derby goes, it doesn’t get any more straightforward than this. Orlando Pirates come into this game in much better form, don’t have to leave the country in midweek and have already gotten the better of their rivals three times this season. With the utmost respect to Chiefs, Orlando Pirates will not even need to be at their best to win this fixture. I’d go as far as saying include the Buccaneers in all multiples.
