LET’S DO IT ALL AGAIN Described as a wide open race, the Hollywoodbets Durban July is set for a humdinger with crowds back on course on Saturday and a high-class field of 18 duelling it out for the greatest prize in South African horseracing. Reigning SA Champion
trainer Justin Snaith saddles 5 runners in his bid to win the Hollywoodbets Durban July for the sixth time on Saturday. The Snaith attack includes topweight and dual Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Jet Dark, as well as two past winners in the ‘old man’ Do It Again (2018,2019) and Belgarion (2020). The latter

will be ridden by multiple champion record-breaking rider Piere Strydom, who returns from an injury enforced break to attempt to equal Anton Marcus’ record of five winners. Strydom won the Durban July winners with London News (1996), Trademark

Fourie says his mount only has to concentrate for two minutes to just about win it!
Do It Again caught the eye at the gallops and bids for an historic third win- he will be ridden by Aldo Domeyer.
Multiple SA Champion and international ambassador Mike de Kock saddles a quartet of July runners, and will be keen to get back on to the illustrious honour roll, having last saddled the brilliant filly Igugu to win in 2011.
In the new generation of jockeys, Richard Fourie, who partners Cape Derby star Pomp And Power for Justin Snaith.is next best with 3 winners, in Legislate (2014), Do It Again (2019) and Belgarion in 2020. They were all trained by Snaith!
Coincidentally, De Kock saddles the only member of the fairer sex in the 2022 renewal in the Silvano daughter Sparkling Water, who races in the famous Wilgerbosdrift silks.

Former multiple SA Champion Sean Tarry has won the Durban July twice and his two-handed attack is headed by Gr1 Summer Cup hero Flying Carpet and champion stayer Nebraas, who is a reserve runner. Defending champion Kommetdieding will again be ridden by Gavin Lerena and ‘lucky’ owner Ashwin Reynolds drew gate 13 for his star. Trainer Michelle Rix said that Kommetdieding carries

the race that we all want to win,” Kannemeyer told the Sporting Post.
“It’s hard to win one July –let alone 2 with the same horse! But it is difficult not to be confident looking at his gallop and his fitness! We are looking forward to Saturday!” she added.
Trainer Joey Soma has pointed out that Gr1 SA Classic winner Red Saxon, who coincidentally drew the same 14 gate as his illustrious stablemate Got The Greenlight in 2021, is the only horse to have beaten the favourite Safe Passage. Soma has substituted Serino Moodley for injured Rachel Venniker.
Milnerton trainer Dean Kannemeyer has won the Durban July three times and saddles Waterberry Lane who races in a partnership of the late Mike Rattray and his wife, Norma. “I am pleased with the 7 draw. He is a very smart 3yo and nothing would mean more to me than to honour Mike Rattray’s memory and enormous investment in the sport by winning the Hollywoodbets Durban July. If we don’t have a ticket we don’t have a chance and it’s
SA Champion trainer elect Paul Peter only has one runner. “Astrix’ last win was no fluke – he is very well and his gallop was very good. Punters please don’t leave him out!” added the man from Turffontein. Trainer Vaughan Marshall says that 2021 runner-up Linebacker’s prep has gone to plan. “I couldn’t be happier with him. He worked well on Thursday morning!”
Johan Janse van Vuuren has two in the race. “Puerto Manzano has found his best form as a late 4yo. He is well, has a good draw and a jockey with BMT in Raymond Danielson. Against him is that he prefers a long straight - so Hollywoodbets Greyville may not suit him ideally. But there could be speed in play, which will counter the short straight concern. He is preferred to Second Base,” he said. Trainer Sean Tarry said that his Summer Cup winner Flying Carpet is in a good space. “I’m very happy to be carrying 53,5kgs with a Gr1 winning 4yo. There are many lines of form to suggest he is not out of it.”

LYLE SUGGESTS LINEBACKER THE ONE TO BEAT Multiple SA Champion jockey Lyle Hewitson suggests Linebacker to beat Do It Again and Sparkling Water on Saturday, when we chatted to the Hong Kongbased rider earlier this week. While the Hollywoodbets Durban July day Pick 6 is the major play, with a R2 million carryover expected to boost the pool to R12 million, the big race quartet is expected to reach a healthy R10
million. Only four tote aces will be paid on the Hollywoodbets Durban July. Hollywoodbets offer fixed odds though for 2,3,4,5 and 6 places. Another big play on the day is the free-to-enter Hollywoodbets Punters Challenge, where a prize of R10 million awaits the player/s able to select all 12 winners on the card. There is also a R250 000 must-bewon prize to be shared by the top

destination timeously.
It was Jet Dark, and I was searching for a Safe Passage to Waterberry Lane near Hollywoodbets Greyville race course. I had been there many times before with Puerto Manzano and Zapatillas, but now I was going to Do it Again all by my lonesome self. I had to be there by 2 July, no later. Or my race was run.
After summoning the spirits of my guru, Al Muthana, and gently dropping some Sparkling Water on the holy ground, I took to the air.
My loyal aide of many a July, the English communist, Red Saxon, suggested I use my trusted gold and purple Flying Carpet to reach my
Time was of the essence. I shouted at him, "Kommetdieding!" And he quickly brought it to me.
I flew over Hoedspruit, Limpopo, careful not to violate any Airways Law. Even though I had barely touched Second Base, I began to feel hungry. With one hand steering the carpet, I stuck the other into my backpack, searching for my Aragosta and Linebacker. But, as my learned comic, Astrix, once cautioned me, it is not wise to eat and drink when flying. I journeyed on, knowing for

certain that I'd arrive at Hollywoodbets Greyville by 2 July, to be greeted excitedly by Hollywood's Pomp and Power. But I couldn't tell if my geriatric French Afrikaner friend, Pierre Belgarion, would make it on time. Well, if he couldn't, perhaps Nebraas might sneak in, which, if truth be told, is something of a long shot. Not far to go now. I can hear the roar already, the air pungent with the smell of sardines. This is no Hollywood movie. This is the real deal, the stuff dreams are made of...

SECURING BELGARION’S ART!
With Hollywoodbets Durban July fever sweeping the country, SP reader Anand-Jay Hariparsad of Phoenix penned this contribution to the fashion, finesse and flamboyance associated with this truly great sporting event. ASTRIX Magazine revealed details of the much anticipated auction of paintings owned by the Duke of BELGARION. “ It’s time to DO IT AGAIN, so
KOMMETDIEDING ! ( bags of cash ) , he quipped. From ARAGOSTA to ZAPATILLAS they flocked to the island of PUERTO MANZANO, the Duke’s, SECOND BASE, in an attempt to secure a prized painting or two. The bidding began in earnest and a RED SAXON secured FLYING CARPET outbidding the Count of NEBRAAS in the process ! Similarly, many other paintings found new owners. The highlight of the evening was

the auction of a trio of paintings centred around a common theme which were meant to be sold as a unit. AL MUTHANA, who had the Sheik as a LINEBACKER, was able to display his POMP AND POWER on the night. He hired JET DARK and used AIRWAYS LAW to ensure that his paintings, HOEDSPRUIT, SPARKLING WATER and WATERBERRY LANE had a SAFE PASSAGE to their new home !

Wilgerbosdrift owner Mary Slack is living every owner’s dream. Over the past two weeks, she has tasted international success not once, but twice. At the recent Royal Ascot meeting, her three-yearold colt Claymore opened his stakes account in the Gr3 Hampton Court Stakes in just his fourth start. The son of New Bay, who is trained by Jane ChappleHyam, bounced back from a disappointing effort in the French 2000 Guineas. Incidentally, Claymore was bred by Guenther Schmidt, whose family sold 1973 German Oaks winner Oraza to Mary’s late father Harry Oppenheimer. A small world indeed! History will show that Oraza’s stakes-placed daughter Countess Palotta was sent to Mauritzfontein where she became ancestress of champion juvenile Seventh Plain, Gr3 winner East Wind and Gr1 Gold Cup third Ile Maurice. Claymore’s win provided compensation for the disappointing effort of Wilgerbosdrift UK-bred Aikhal in the opening days Gr1 St James’s Palace Stakes. To be fair though, the colt was making his seasonal debut after an absence of nearly eight months. However, who but the Aidan O’Brien-trained three-year-
old resurfaced barely a week later at the Curragh and displaying all the toughness of his sire, ‘the Iron Horse’ Galileo, Aikhal put up a dazzling performance to win the Gr3 International Stakes with an impressive turn of foot, coming home in splendid isolation. “I am absolutely gob smacked,” Mary remarked afterwards. “I thought it was crazy running him after only a week, but what a happy ending!” Raced in partnership with Coolmore and George van Opel’s Westerberg, Mary bred Aikhal in Ireland from the Gr3 Gladness Stakes winner Diamond Fields, a half-sister to Gr1 Irish Derby hero Latrobe and Gr1 English Oaks runner-up Pink Dogwood. Mary’s dream run could very well continue this weekend at Hollywoodbets Greyville, when her splendid homebred filly Sparkling Water lines up in the country’s premier race, the Durban July. The Mike de Kock-trained fouryear-old is by Silvano, whose record in the race is unparalelled. The former Maine Chance linchpin has sired a quartet of July winners to date, the first of which, Bold Silvano captured the race in 2010, while Heavy Metal followed suit three years later. In 2015, Silvano created his own unique history when siring a Maine Chance-bred trifecta, his sons Power King, Punta Arenas and Tellina filling the first three places. Two years later, champion Marinaresco led home paternal Al Sahem in a blanket finish, with the Silvano filly Nightingale carrying 18 a joint fourth Mary’s colours into place.
Sparkling Water may be the proverbial rose amongst the thorns on Saturday, yet she is no stranger to downing male rivals. Earlier this season, she defeated Golden Pheasant and fellow July runner Astrix in the Gr3 Victory Moon Stakes, again proved best in the Gr2 Western Cape Stayers, and was beaten two necks in the Gr2 Colorado King Stakes won by another July candidate Second Base. In her most recent start, she found only Astrix her superior when going down by a head in the Gr1 Premier’s Champions Challenge. At last week’s official Hollywoodbets Durban July gallops, she gave notice of her wellbeing when matching strides with stable companion and recent Gr1 Horse Chestnut winner Al Muthana. It’s been eleven years since a filly last wore the winning sash, that being champion Igugu, who like Sparkling Water, was trained by De Kock. For Mary, it would be a first Durban July winner. Her link to the iconic race is a tangible one, as her late parents won it no less than six times and we are sure she would love to continue the family tradition!
HURDLE CHAMP RETIRES Nicky Henderson has called dual Champion Hurdle hero Buveur D'Air "a real friend and a very special horse" after it was revealed connections have called time on the topclass hurdler's career. A winner of no fewer than eight Gr1’s for the master of Seven Barrows, JP McManus's star performer bows out at the age of 11 after connections decided against pursuing another campaign this season. His final appearance came
when finishing down the field in last season's Morebattle Hurdle following an 11-month absence, but the ultra-slick jumper will be best remembered for his back-toback Champion Hurdle triumphs in 2017 and 2018. Rated 172 at his peak, the French recruit also won two consecutive runnings of the Fighting Fifth Hurdle, while further toplevel successes came in the Top Novices' Hurdle, Aintree Hurdle, Christmas Hurdle and Punchestown Champion Hurdle. In his early days at Seven Barrows he carried the colours of Potensis

Bloodstock Ltd and Chris Giles, but he was sold to join McManus ahead of the 2016-17 season. Henderson told the Racing Post: "He was a real friend and a very special horse. A joy to have around the place. We've been so lucky that the Champion Hurdle has been quite good for us, but he was a horse of a lifetime, really. He was a beautiful horse, too.

The outstanding offer available at BetXchange means that bettors may be interested in looking at a few of the outsiders in the Durban July markets. Horses at single-digit prices haven’t
had the best of luck in the race over the past 14 years, with the shortest-price winner being Bold Silvano in 2010 at 2/1. Since then, we have seen a 20/1 winner in the form of Pomodoro, and two 18/1 winners in the shape of Kommetdieding and The Conglomerate.
There is certainly outside value in the betting for the race this year. Justin Snaith has won three of the previous four renewals of the Durban July, and his outside contender this year comes in the form of Belgarion. The 2020 winner will be looking to join the greats as a two-time winner of Advertorial

the famous race, and he looks to be getting back on course after finishing ninth in the race 12 months ago. His latest start saw him finish second in a Pinnacle Stakes, and it could be hard to discount the experienced seven-year-old at 33/1!

WHAT A HISTORY! ‘Winningmost jockeys are Anton Marcus with 5 victories, and Tiger Wright, Anthony Delpech and Piere Strydom, with 4 each. Strydom rides Belgarion on Saturday, while relative young gun Richard Fourie (in his 37th year!) can make it 4 wins - if Pomp And Power behaves himself!’
The 126th renewal of the now Hollywoodbetssponsored Durban July at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday hails a new benchmark with a stake of R5 million, making it the richest graded stakes race in the land. Saturday also marks a return to people on track after the covid-19 pandemic led to a ghostly silence in 2020 and 2021. The race was first run in
1897 over 1600m for a stake of 500 sovereigns and named The Durban Turf Club Handicap. While we are used to it being run on the first Saturday in July, in 1897 it was run on 17 July, the third Saturday that month. In 1899 the stake was increased to £1000. In 1902 the crowds could enjoy the new (mostly finished) grandstand. In 1903 the stake jumped to £1250 & it was the first year that an official time was taken (Henry

Nourse’s chestnut filly Peerless won it in 1 min 42.5 seconds). The most successful Julyproducing mare was Pauline, who celebrated the winner for 3 consecutive years Apollo (1901), Chaos (1902) and Peerless (1903). In her turn, Peerless produced Nobleman, who went on to win the race in 1911, becoming the first and last 2yo to ever win the July. Nobleman was ridden by Alec Laird,
father of the legendary Syd Laird & grandfather of the current Alec Laird. Peerless’ grandson Full Dress won it in 1930. Not bad to have 3 generations of winners from a single family ! Another notable mare in the July history was Maritime, who was the dam to winners Sea Cottage and Naval Escort. Other horses to have won the July who have gone on to produce offspring to win it are Sadri II (1941) with his daughter Gay Jane (1951) & son C’est Si Bon (1954), Kipling (1940) with son Mowgli (1952) and Bush Telegraph (1987) with his son London News (1996). The July has been won on objection twice. In 1975 Gatecrasher was disqualified & the race awarded to Principal Boy. In 1994 the objection against Surfing
Home by Pas de Quoi was upheld, with the race awarded to Space Walk.
1922 is significant for the winning apprentice jockey (Fred McGrath) being 12 years old.
In 1904 the stake was £1500. In 1906 it decreased to £1000 again.
By 1926 the stake was £4000 & £5000 in 1927 (when it was won by JWS (Willie) Langerman’s Hussein, trained by C Wade & ridden by Granville Gorton.
The distance was extended to 1800m in 1913 (when it was won by Caged Bird, giving owner/ trainer Frederick William (Fred) Murray his 4th consecutive win. He first won with St Caulin in 1910, then Nobleman in 1911, Lombard in 1912 & Caged Bird in 1913. In 1915 the trip was increased again to 2000m (and won by Winnipeg for the Hon HA Wyndham-who has written a history of horses in SA). 1917 was the first year the race was filmed. The stake increased to £1250 again, it was £1775 in 1918 & £2125 in 1919 & climbed steadily after that.
1928 was the first year the race was officially named the Durban July Handicap. 1934 saw the implementation of the Benjamin starting gates. In 1941 the race was again increased to 2200m & won by owner/trainer Syd Garrett’s Sadri II, ridden by Stanley Amos. Incidentally Syd Garrett also rode 2 July wins of his own (Goldwing in 1919 & Pamphlet in 1920).

1946 was the first year jockeys’ silks were published in the Duff’s Turf Guide. The stake was now up to £7500 & jumped to £10 000 in 1947. In the 1949 meeting, out of 9 engagements for the day, Tiger Wright rode 5 winners (including the July), a second & a third on the card. In 1952 the race was run over the subway for the first time. 1958 was the first year that the Stipes were able to contact one another from around the course by telephone.
1961 was the last year of pounds & shillings before we moved over to the decimal system & it was won for the first time by Syd Laird with Kerason. It was the first of Syd’s 7 victories: Kerason in 1961 / Colorado King 1963 (first year of the Rothmans sponsorship) / Java Head in 1966 (the year Sea Cottage was shot & still finished 4th) / 1964 deadheat with Sea Cottage & Jollify (even though Sea Cottage carried 12,5 kg more than Jollify) / 1971 with Mazarin (setting a new class record of 2 min 14sec) / 1973 with Yataghan / 1978 was his last win with the great Politician. Rothmans of Pall Mall joined as a sponsor in 1963 (when it was won by Colorado King) & the prize money was R33 800. They

continued their sponsorship until 2000. In 2001 (when it was won by Trademark) the race was run as the Durban July. Vodacom stepped in as a new sponsor in 2002, the year it was won by Ipi Tombe & Mike de Kock. 1966 was the first year the horses’ weights were recorded in pounds only. In 1989 bad weather forced the club to take the unprecedented decision to abandon the first 6 races in favour of the July, which resumed at the normal starting time. It was won by Right Prerogative. In 1990 the stake was pushed up to R1 million.
It was also the first year the race was run as ‘The Rothmans July’ (not the Rothmans July Handicap). In 1991 Flaming Rock won the July from the 20 draw. Subsequently Dynasty won it from the 20 draw in 2003 and Pomodoro won it from the widest draw in 2012. Winningmost jockeys are Anton Marcus with 5 victories, and Tiger Wright, Anthony Delpech and Piere Strydom with 4 each. And Power behaves himself! The greatest winning margin was recorded by Riboville in 1974. It was the year Jamaican Music clipped heels with another horse & dumped Tom Rattley 350m from the start. In fact, despite Riboville’s historic winning margin of 4.5 lengths, the unburdened Jamaican Music beat him home with ease! Jamaican Music won the July the following year. 1986 was the year of the first Millard whitewash when he trained the first 3 past the post (Occult, Fools Holme & Enchanted Garden). He did it again in 1990 with Illustrador, Olympic Duel & Jungle Warrior.
Pamphlet won it twice (1918 & 1920) and several horses won it in consecutive years including Campanajo (1897 & 1898), Corriecrian (1907 & 1908), Milesia Pride (1949 & 1950), El Picha (1999 & 2000) and Do It Again (2018 & 2019), who bids to make it an historic third on Saturday. Last, but not least, Candice Bass-Robinson (2017) and Michelle Rix (2021) are the only lady trainers to saddle a Durban July winner. Mrs Rix can make it two if Kommetdieding defends his title successfully on Saturday!

Arch rivals? Justin ‘Bieber’ Snaith & ‘Stoute Michael’ de Kock share a word at the gallops
At least 35 000 people are expected to descend on Hollywoodbets Greyville for the iconic Hollywoodbets Durban July on Saturday. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, eThekwini mayor Mxolisi Kaunda said the event would have “handsome” economic spin-offs for the city. He said the expected spend would be about R145m. At least 740 people would be employed as a result of this event. “We believe these numbers are likely to increase following the welcome announcement of the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions,” said Kaunda. He added that the lifting of these restrictions also
signalled a turning point for the hard-hit tourism industry.
July attendees to adhere to this year’s theme.
“Even before government’s announcement, there had already been growing interest from visitors to come to Durban.”
Timol expects a great turnout and spectacular outfits at this year’s Hollywoodbets Durban July, saying that, especially this year, people need the July to come together, “It’s been a rough two years and I think people are excited.”
Kaunda assured visitors that law enforcement would be on high alert to ensure their safety. This year’s exciting fashion theme is Show Me The Honey, and attendees are encouraged to use black, white, and yellow as their primary colour palettes for their outfit choices. With South Africans’ track record for showing up with eccentric, eye-catching, and overthe-top fashion ensembles, we are all in for a treat! Local fashion influencer and one of the six winners of the 2022 Gateway Famous Influencer Search, Muhammed ‘Mo J’ Timol spoke to the Berea Mail and offered his fashion tips for Durban

For those attending the Hollywoodbets Durban July for the first time, Timol says to keep it minimal. “Go for a classic, simple look. The minimalistic look is trendy at the moment. So keep it elegant, simple, and minimal. Don’t try too hard,” he said. “To stay on par with the theme wear a classic black or white ensemble, a dress or a suit, and add a hint of yellow,” advises Timol.
He says that accessories like watches, rings, chains, or sunglasses could provide that pop of colour that you will need.

“Play around with colours. You can pair a blazer with Chino pants and combine two complimenting colours. Knitwear is on-trend at the moment, you can pair a great knitwear outfit with some chunky sneakers and you have a look!” said Timol. Timol says that between formal and casual wear, one is no better than the other for the Durban July. He advises, however, that if you are going with casual wear, keep it smart casual.

Candiese Lenferna Piere Strydom storms clear on Nexus to make it a heroic comeback to the saddle – Battle Force (Craig Zackey) was runner-up
STRIKER REVS UP FOR JULY SHOWDOWN Call it the Striker magic, call it what you like, but Piere Strydom’s magnificent winning comeback to the saddle after a 14 month absence to win the R600 000 KZN Breeders’ Mile on the KZN Breeders raceday at Hollywoodbets Greyville was a highlight of our local weekend racing.
Out of action since 8 April 2021 with a semi-detached retina, Striker recently turned up the Hollywoodbets Durban July volume, when announcing that he would be returning to attempt to match Anton Marcus’ record of five Durban July winners. The blonde bomber, who turned 56 a week ago, already has July wins on London News (1996), Trademark (2021),

Pomodoro (2012) and The Conglomerate (2016) on his impressive cv. He will ride Belgarion for Justin Snaith in the 2022 renewal of Africa’s richest graded stakes race. And it was for the Snaith team that the Gauteng-based form multiple champion returned on Sunday.
Nexus, on who he had won the 2020 Gr2 Peninsula Handicap in such dazzling style, was his return – and only – mount and Striker did the rest. Tracking Gr1 speedster Battle Force in a slow-run race, he angled Nexus (9-2) to the inside rail and produced that old magic to
win by three quarters in a time of 98,25 secs. The victory took Nexus’ earnings over the R1 million marker, and was the best tonic the veteran jockey could have hoped for with his eye on the record prize this coming Saturday. Nexus, a R1,7 million National Yearling Sale graduate, was bred

‘If Pomp And Power just gives me two minutes of commitment, concentration and focus, then we could be celebrating’ – Richard Fourie
Richard Fourie and Hollywoodbets Durban July ride Pomp And Power with Bongani Gagula at Summerveld this week
RICHIE’S IN WINNING FORM With a projected pool of R10 million, Saturday’s Hollywoodbets Durban July Pick 6 is a five-legged challenge according to Winning Form’s newly sponsored rider Richard Fourie. The 36 year old Carletonville-born jockey, known to his friends and colleagues as ‘Dutchy’ or ‘Richie’, recently matched retired legend Jeff Lloyd’s
season tally of 7 Grade 1 victories, and confidently declares that he is aiming for ten Grade 1 trophies for the current term. “We have to set our sights high. This is a competitive sport and there are many good jockeys around,” Richard tells the Sporting Post, as he talks about his brand new sponsorship and the prospects of success on Hollywoodbets Durban July day. “It is an honour and a privilege 35
to be riding under the Winning Form banner. Their whole team do so much for horseracing and I’m just thrilled to be a part of it,” explains the passionate hobby fisherman. It has been a great start under the Winning Form flag, with Richard having ridden Aunty Lizzy to victory for Kumaran Naidoo on the KZN Breeders raceday at Hollywoodbets Greyville on
Sunday, and then Running Rifles 24 hours later at the same venue for the Snaiths. He tells us that he is looking forward to the big day at Hollywoodbets Greyville. “The return of the crowds makes the big days extra special, and while the record books show Gr1 wins as Gr1 wins, irrespective of crowds or not, believe me the adrenaline rush of an atmosphere adds the edge and brings out the best in horse and rider. And the Hollywoodbets Durban July is the biggest!” he says with enthusiasm.
Richard is the only jockey with a ride in all twelve races on Saturday’s bumper programme. Captain’s Ransom won’t make any of us rich at 3-10, but she looks the proverbial penalty kick in the Brentford FC Gr1 Garden Province Stakes. “I suggested when we started chatting that it’s a five-legged Pick 6 and I will stand by that. Captain’s Ransom is a wonder. What do I say? Her form says it all. And what makes it even more exciting is that the race honours Brentford FC. That’s a unique name in SA racing and I know they carry the Hollywoodbets branding in the English Premier League. So there is great two-way synergy. Football is our number 1 sport. All the guys
at the stables are so excited about this race!” Richard rides Pomp And Power in the Hollywoodbets Durban July, a contest he describes as ‘very open’. He won the Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby on the spirited son of Vercingetorix. Smart places in the WSB Guineas and a runner-up berth in the Gr1 Daily News behind Safe Passage, suggest he is a horse on course for a big run – but he is a bit of a ‘wild child’, as somebody labelled him recently. “Pomp And Power is a really very smart 3yo. But with all that ability,

36 Richard says Captain’s Ransom (seen here with owners Basie and Suzette Viljoen) is a ‘wonder’
he has a free spirit and a mind of his own. If he just gives me two minutes of commitment, concentration and focus, then we could be celebrating. Don’t leave him out,” he cautions. “I have nice rides across the afternoon. Gainsford runs in the Vodacom 2200. It’competitive and it’s his first time that far. But I know him well and I feel he will get the trip. Keagan de Melo rides Black Thorn in the Pick 6 opener. He is a smart stayer and I feel he will go very close. I ride Eden Roc in the Gr2 Post Merchants. It’s a wide open last leg of the Pick 6. We must have a big quartet chance. Overall, we are going out fit and trying, and I’d tell punters to include me if the budget permits!” he says with a confident smile in his voice. When taxed about his fishing, Richard is still big on hooking the big ‘uns, but with all the travelling and feature race winners, he has had to put his rod and reel on the back-burner somewhat. He can’t catch the tearaway Warren Kennedy on the top of the SA national log, but Richard is pleased with his 178 winners at a strike-rate of 18,33% and over R20 million in stakes. “Keagan de Melo and I
are going to push each other and chase the championship next season. He is also riding under the Winning Form banner now and is a really promising up-and-coming young jockey. He has a great work ethic and attitude. It’s tough but we are in it to win it!” Another new Winning Form signing, Keagan de Melo is in third spot on the national log with his 172 winners (16,44%) generating close on R17 million in stakes. The Alberton-born jockey turns 29 on 24 September. He is married to Demi, a young Lawyer, whose brother Callan jets out from Australia to ride Al Muthana in the Hollywoodbets Durban July on Saturday. Keagan rode first winner on Western Gem for the now Koreabased Bart Rice at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on 8 August 2010. A serious Arsenal supporter, Keagan started his apprenticeship in 2009. Retained by Lady Christine Laidlaw’s Khaya Stables, Keagan is first choice rider to the powerful Dean Kannemeyer yard and will partner 3yo Waterberry Lane in the Hollywoodbets Durban July. Keagan adopts a chilled attitude to life and is on record saying that he is thankful for the small mercies rather than stressed about the things that he can’t change. He rates loyalty and integrity top of the pile and says both characteristics feature strongly in 37
his career highlights so far. We will catch up in a few weeks with Keagan de Melo. In the meantime, include the new Winning Form duo in all bets!

In a devastating turn of bad luck, Apprentice Rachel Venniker’s opportunity to become the first female to ride in the Hollywoodbets Durban July was dashed after a freak incident in the final race at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Monday. The talented 21 year old was unseated when her mount Kileigh’s Fate reared as the gates opened at the start of the eighth race. According to Gold Circle Racing Executive Raf Sheik, she was reported to have suffered concussion and whiplash and was stand
down on medical advice. “I am so sad and sorry for Rachel. She is such a professional and I know that she was proud and excited to have her first Durban July ride and make history,” Joey Soma told the Sporting Post, confirming that he had been inundated with calls since the incident. “These things happen in racing. But for now we wish Rachel a speedy recovery and thank her for all her hard work,” added the veteran Gr1 conditioner. While a decision was made to utilise Rachel Venniker ahead of regular rider Julius Mariba in view of her local track experience, there
were 18 jockeys (including apprentices) carded to ride at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday that could make the 53,5kgs. Rachel was allotted plus half due to her restricted minimum riding weight. On Tuesday trainer Joey Soma announced that Durban-based Gr1 winning jockey Serino Moodley would partner Red Saxon in Saturday’s R5 million Gr1 Hollywoodbets Durban July. For now, Serino was already at work on Red Saxon today (Tuesday) and it is all systems go. We wish Rachel a speedy recovery and
If Serino Moodley were to win the Hollywoodbets Durban July, he would become the first Indian rider in history to lift the prestigious trophy. JUST HAVING A BALL!
Saturday’s Hollywoodbets Durban July programme hosts a milestone Gr1 event on the bumper undercard, which represents a unique first for South African horseracing. The R1 million Brentford FC Gr1 Garden Province Stakes (16h45) is the first race on African soil to be named after an English Premier League side. This arose through
the partnership between the flagship raceday’s major sponsor Hollywoodbets and Brentford, with the leading international sportsbook operator being the front-of-jersey sponsor, and principle partner, of Brentford FC, fondly known as ‘The Bees’ by their legion of fans. While the prestigious mile contest for the fairer sex hosts a nationally representative field. and an intriguing sub-plot of a ‘best of North’ vs ‘best of South’ battle royale, in a delightful nuance for

the fashionistas looking to put in a star performance in the Hollywoodbets Durban July Fashion Theme, ‘Show Me The Honey’, the presence of ‘The Bees’ on the great racing day adds the proverbial sting in the ‘tale’, and offers a treasure trove of creative delights for those seeking some sartorial inspiration. Alongside the Gr1 Schweppes Majorca Stakes and the Gr1 HSH Princess
Charlene Empress Club Stakes, the Garden Province Stakes is a potential Equus championship clincher, and the season’s final leg of the unofficial fairer sex weightfor-age mile ‘Triple Crown’. The illustrious Garden Province honour roll boasts a bevy of fairer sex stars of the ilk of champions Beach Beauty, Inara, Celtic Sea, and many more. Justin Snaith’s Equus champion older filly elect Captain’s Ransom, a dramatic last stride winner of the 2022 Schweppes Gr1 Majorca Stakes, is a red hot 3-10 favourite with Hollywoodbets to register her sixth consecutive victory, and also her sixth elite level success. Her preparatory run in the Gr1 SA Fillies Sprint earlier this month over
Hollywoodbets Scottsville 1200m was breathtaking and underlined her enormous versatility. Captain’s Ransom galloped under regular pilot Richard Fourie after the official Hollywoodbets Durban July public gallops on Thursday last week, and turned heads as she strode out and looked in fine fettle for her Brentford FC Gr1 Garden Province Stakes test on Saturday. Jon Varney, CEO of Brentford, said that club representatives were looking forward to experiencing one of the world’s great racedays, against the backdrop of the warm hospitality and passion for sport that South Africa was well known for. “Our proud association with Hollywoodbets has grown in leaps and bounds over the past two years and, as a club and corporate entity, we share many of the same values. We look forward to the Garden Province Stakes and being represented at the home of the
Durban July, Hollywoodbets Greyville, on the big day to share in the great African celebration of the sport of horseracing,” he added. Hollywoodbets Brand And Communications Manager Devin Heffer said that soccer was South Africa’s favourite sport and that the involvement of a global brand like Brentford FC with a major local horseracing event, created a host of possible synergies. “Like soccer, horseracing offers adrenaline-charged thrills and excitement for fans. It is this broad-based cross-pollination and diversity that we are aiming to drive for the benefit of both codes, on a day that is unrivalled across the African continent,” added Heffer.
ERUPT MAKES IT FIVE! Maine Chance Farms’ exciting young sire Erupt marked his fifth first crop winner when his twoyear-old daughter Queen Of Sparta saluted at Durbanville on Wednesday afternoon. Trained by Candice BassRobinson, Queen Of Sparta had finished third last time out and was sent out tote favourite in Wednesday’s TAB Maiden Juvenile Plate (Fillies) (1250m).
Bred and owned by Jagessar Limited, Queen Of Sparta is out of the Medaglia D’Oro mare Divine Inspiration. She is the fifth winner to have emerged from Erupt’s first crop.

SLIM HOPE – BUT OUT IN THE COLD 51
While both are good sportsmen and seasoned racing folk, trainers Andre Nel and Sean Tarry are disappointed and shocked that their respective charges Airways Law and Nebraas did not make the final field of 18 for Saturday’s R5 million Gr1 Hollywoodbets Durban July. Both are reserves. Twenty runners (18 plus 2 reserves) were selected from the 28 that stood their ground at final acceptance. There will always be hardluck stories, as any horse included means another would be left out. While there is still time until 08h15 on Friday, neither Nel nor Tarry want to come in through the back door on somebody else’s rotten luck. Andre Nel said that Airways Law, who is now carded for the R175 000 Gr3 Vodacom 2200, or ‘consolation July’ as it is tagged, is on the up
and spot on for Saturday.
Anderson.
“He has improved more than 30 pounds in his last 3 runs – and it is not inconceivable that he can improve further. One makes the deduction that the reserve runner would run last had all run. I don’t see Airways Law landing up last. And how many Cup Trial winners have not gone on to make the Durban July field? Now we are relegated to the ‘consolation’ race. It’s an ordinary handicap for a stake of R175 000 and hardly consolation. It goes without saying that we are very disappointed not to have made the cut.”
He will be 3,5kg under sufferance if running in the July, and was merit rated lower than many other borderline horses.
After winning the ‘preferred consideration’ event, the Gr3 Hollywoodbets Dolphins Cup Trial, Legislate son Airways Law was supplemented at a cost of R30 190 into the Hollywoodbets Durban July. The handicappers awarded Airways Law a 108 merit rating after he had come from last to win the Cup Trial over 1800m by 0,25 lengths from the consistent Mount
Trainer Sean Tarry told us that he was ‘shocked’ when his ultra consistent Equus Champion stayer Nebraas was made second reserve. “Nebraas has won 6 of his last 8 starts – 4 of those were in features. I’m shocked he didn’t get in. He is a decent staying sort, who would have been a massive runner off his weight, and could have possibly led in a race that looks devoid of any pace.” The 2021 Marshalls World Of Sport winner Nebraas does not run in any other race on Saturday and will likely bid to defend his title in the 3200m contest at the end of the season.

AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR SOUTH AFRICAN BREEDERS Ridgemont Highlands is excited to announce that the blue-blooded speed machine Real Gone Kid will stand at Stud for the 2022 breeding season. The handsome chestnut bears striking similarities to Ridgemont Highlands' outstanding young sire Rafeef, with both Rafeef and Real Gone Kid being lightning-fast performers from the Redoute's Choice male line. A son of Redoute's Choice's greatest sire son, thus far, Snitzel – himself a four-time, consecutive Champion Sire in Australia and Leading Sire of 2YOs in Australia on three occasions, has sired more than 120 world-wide stakes winners. Hailing from a wonderful female line, Real Gone Kid is a son of Equus Champion, and G1 Cape Fillies Guineas and G1 Woolavington 2000 heroine, In The Fast Lane - a daughter of seven times South African champion sire Jet Master. In what is seen as a very exciting opportunity, any breeder who sends a mare will incur no covering cost. If a breeder commits to sending a mare every year for four years they will receive a share of the horse which will entitle them to a further free service every year, plus any dividends that the stallion may earn thereafter. An understandably delighted Craig Carey is quoted, “Without a doubt Real Gone Kid has an international standard pedigree that wouldn’t be out of place in any stallion barn around the world. Access to a bloodline of this strength and quality is very exciting – Ridgemont Highlands are committing to send Real Gone Kid a minimum of twenty mares every year, for four years.” 55

Winchester Mansion (Louis Mxothwa in blue) gets the better of The Futureisbright (Craig Zackey) in an exciting finish
TRIPPI’S 88TH STAKES WINNER With hopes dashed that Piet Steyn's Gem King would scoop the Cape Winter Series triple crown after failing to stay, Brett Crawford produced an ace staying 3yo in the shape of Trippi colt, Winchester Mansion. Drakenstein Stud’s resident champion sire Trippi has enjoyed an outstanding season in 2021-2022 and the evergreen son of End Sweep sired yet another stakes winner when his
progressive son Winchester Mansion won Saturday’s Gr3 World Sports Betting Pocket Power Stakes at Kenilworth. Trained by Brett Crawford, the Drakenstein Stud bred and owned Winchester Mansion had looked unlucky when a close second in the Gr3 WSB Legal Eagle Stakes last time out, but made no mistakes when running out a convincing winner of Saturday’s Pocket Power Stakes. Under Louis Mxothwa, Winchester Mansion came from the back of
56
the field to win going away by half a length. Out of the Spectrum mare Sea Point, Winchester Mansion has now won twice from eight starts with the promise of plenty more to come. Winchester Mansion became his sire’s 88th stakes winner when he captured the final leg of the Winter Series on Saturday. The progressive colt is
bred on very similar lines to another graded stakes winning three-year-old son of Trippi, with Winchester Mansion hailing from the immediate family of the Trippi sired 2021 Gr3 Cape Classic winner Trip Of Fortune. Trippi has a fine crop of three-year-olds this season, even by his high standards. While his sophomores in 2021-2022 are yet to include a Gr1 winner, Trippi’s current three-year-old crop includes six black type horses notably the aforementioned pair of Winchester Mansion and Trip Of Fortune, Gr2 Western Cape Fillies Championship heroine Amanzimtoti, and Gr3 Strelitzia Stakes/G3 WSB
Magnolia Handicap winner Sound Of Warning. However, Trippi’s success this season has not been limited to his three-year-olds with his champion son Jet Dark capturing the Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate for a second time, and his two-year-old daughter Sweet Pepper victorious in the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship (a race which Sound Of Warning finished second in last year). Trippi also looks poised to make his presence felt at Hollywoodbets Greyville this Saturday. He is broodmare sire of two runners in Saturday’s Bloodstock SA Sales Cup (C &G) in the form of Raffles and USA’s Hope respectively, Sweet Pepper runs in the Gr2 Zulu Kingdom Golden
57
Slipper, and Sound Of Warning lines up in the Gr2 Post Merchants. Trippi is also broodmare sire of Gr1 Brentford FC Garden Province Stakes contender She’s A Keeper and Merchants hopefuls Sheela and William Robertson. Trippi has also made his presence felt in the Gr1 Hollywoodbets Durban July -his son Jet Dark lines up, while Trippi is also broodmare sire of fellow July contender Hoedspruit.

LIGHT SPEED CLOCKS THE GALLOP 60
61 Grant van Niekerk and Light Speed return after a smart win
The Snaith Racing Team continued their Hollywoodbets Durban July day build-up in good style when the talented Gimmethegreenlight colt Light Speed went all the way to win the R250 000 World Sports Betting Gr3 Langerman in courageous style. When Grant van Niekerk does things right, there are few riders to match him and the 31 year old rode a cracker from the front on a clearly promising sort. Even when Louis Mxothwa and the Gujadhur family’s Port Louis (another Gimmethegreenlight son!) moved up looking a winner late, Van Niekerk straightened Light Speed and didn’t panic as the Maine Chance-bred colt soared home.
In a quicker time than the fairer sex in the Irridescence Stakes, Light Speed (6-1) beat Port Louis (5-1) by 1,75 lengths in a time of 95,98 secs. Vaughan Marshall would have been thrilled with Lord William’s late rattle to run third at 10-1, a further 0,30 lengths back. The favourite At My Command (5-2) came on late to run fourth in a blanket scurry for the end of the quartet berth. Drakenstein-sponsored jockey Grant van Niekerk rode a cracker. “His draw played a huge role. I set my own pace. He is a lovely scopey horse and has a lot of ability – I thought he wasn’t ready. The Snaiths proved me wrong – again!” he laughed. “He is a big horse and is going to take some time. I thought the
62
second horse had us when he moved up. But Light Speed is fresh and lightly raced. He is not a typical Gimmethegreenlight. Well done to Andreas Jacobs and Tim Bootsma at Maine Chance. And this is Switzerland-based Thomas Lines first horse here – what a fairytale start!” said Jonathan Snaith. A R175 000 National Yearling Sale buy, Light Speed is out of the once winning Fort Wood mare, Lady In Love. He has won 2 of 3 starts for stakes of R195 500.

Going Up (Keagan de Melo) catapults clear down the inside
SHE’S ON THE UP! An astute call to revert to the sprints paid dividends for trainer Candice BassRobinson as she provided the Hollywood Syndicate with their first Cape feature success, courtesy of Gimmethegreenlight daughter Going Up, who impressed with a sweeping victory in the R150 000 WSB Bet With The Best Listed Olympic Duel Stakes. The lightly raced 3yo was bred by Ridgemont Highlands, and is leased by the Hollywood Syndicate. It was a milestone victory, as
she is also Candice’ first horse for the powerful KZN-based yellow and purple syndicate. Described as something of a tough cookie to condition and a classy sort who gives her trainer sleepless nights and headaches, Going Up was easy to back at 132. Coming from some way off the speed under the Winning Formsponsored Keagan de Melo, she carried too many guns for a class line-up and went on well to Major Attraction (17-2) by 2,25 lengths in a time of 74,48 secs for the straight 1200m. Snaith rounded off the trifecta with the consistent Phil’s Dancer (10-1)

holding out Walk Of Fame for third, in something of a minor Place Accumulator knock. Bred by Ridgemont Highlands, the winner was another feature success on the sunny afternoon for Varsfontein sire Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready) and is out of the eight time winning Goldkeeper mare, Raise The Bar. Going Up has won 2 races with 3 places from 7 starts for stakes of R185 750.

Corne Orffer and Andre Nel celebrate a plan come together!
FLAWLESS IS AS FLAWLESS DOES Rondeberg conditioner Andre Nel commendably achieved his goal of securing black-type for the Legislate chestnut So Flawless, when the 4yo ran on best of all to win the R150 000 Listed WSB Sign Up Now Ladies Mile at Kenilworth on Saturday. Still reeling from the disappointing news earlier this week after his terrific job of getting Sabine Plattner’s Airways Law to the cusp of a Hollywoodbets Durban July run, Nel bounced back like the professional we know him to be, when So Flawless came out firing after a 20 week break to win well.
Under an elated Corne Orffer, So Flawless (16-1) delivered the Pick 6 knockout when finishing with a wet sail to hold off the Snaith challenger Veronica Mars (5-1) by 1,25 lengths in a time of 102,50 secs. Topweight Rain In Newmarket (7-2) finished powerfully for third, with the winner’s more fancied stablemate Fusillade (7-2) was back in fourth. Trainer Andre Nel said So Flawless had only been on a break as races were ‘continuously being cancelled’. “But she likes running fresh, even though I would have preferred a run or two first. She is one of the more unlucky fillies I have had. I
67
am glad we got a Listed race on her cv as I said to breeder James Armitage that I would do my best. To Mrs Plattner and the team, well done!” added Nel. Leased from breeder James Armitage, So Flawless is a daughter of former SA Horse Of The Year and Durban July winner Legislate (Dynasty) out of the Judpot mare Natural Beauty. So Flawless has won 4 races with 9 places from 17 starts for stakes of R282 225.

Grant van Niekerk steers Young Love to an impressive win
YOUNG LOVE LIVES! The high-riding combination of Andre Nel and Grant van Niekerk enjoyed a feature double at Kenilworth on Saturday when the La Plaissance Stud home-bred Young Love followed up on So Flawless’ victory in the Ladies Mile, with a gutsy showing to win the R150 000 World Sports Betting Listed River Jetez Stakes. Trainer Andre Nel said that some of the riders to have partnered Young Love tried to dissuade him from running her over the 2400m, as she has loads of quality and class. But with no staying races on the
calendar, he took his chances and it paid dividends in style. Grant van Niekerk enjoys an armchair ride on Young Love (Pic – Chase Liebenberg) A winner of the Cape Winter Series first leg, the Listed Sweet Chestnut Stakes back in April, Young Love was cleverly drifted across to the outside rail at the 300m by the quick-thinking Van Niekerk. Young Love (28-10) joined the gallant free-striding Maria Querol (6-1), and after a brief hesitation, straightened and drew off in her blinkers to beat the Snaith filly by half a length in a time of 157,47 secs. The rest were well beaten.
70
A La Plaissance Stud-bred daughter of the high-class Twice Over (Observatory), Young Love is out of the Plattner-raced four-time winner Rosie Tibbs (Casey Tibbs). A winner of 3 races with 1 place from 7 starts, Young Love took her earnings to R245 000. Hopefully the race programmers are listening to the concerns raised by Andre Nel: “We may as well send her to stud now. There are no staying races for her,” he quipped.

Chase Liebenberg 73 Bonika (Greg Cheyne) ranges up on the outside of Miss Marguerite (Richard Fourie) in a great finish
In a thrilling finish to the R150 000 WSB.co.za Listed Irridescence Stakes at Kenilworth on Saturday, Ridgemont Highlands rider Greg Cheyne got the Jackson filly Bonika up to shade Richard Fourie on Miss Marguerite in the shadow of the post. On a beautiful sunny winter’s day at the Southern Suburbs track, the outcome went to the judge, with ace racecaller Rouvaun Smit leaning towards Bonika on the outside, but without any certainty. A R15 000 bargain buy off the first online mare and weanling sale by Kathi Kotzen, who was looking for a companion for one of her
horses, Bonika made it three wins with four places from eight starts and took her stakes tally to R233 100 with a courageous victory. “She was beautifully bred and Glen and I went across the road to have a look at her. We liked her and thought we would take a chance at R15 000. We couldn’t go too far wrong at that price and she has really done so well and has so much heart,” said a thrilled Kathi, wife of Woodhill Racing conditioner Glen, who spoke to the Sporting Post from Durban. While it was Bonika’s first trip beyond 1200m, the daughter of former Ridgemont Highlands -based sire Jackson (Dynasty) had shed her maiden early on at Durbanville and coped admirably with the turn.
74
Running on strongly late in the race after Lady Mistico had done the donkey work, Bonika (6-1) got the verdict by a head from tote favourite Miss Marguerite (3-1) in a time of 96, 95 secs. The fancied Ciao Bela (3-1) had every chance but had nothing to came and stayed on tamely in third, a further 1,75 lengths back. Bred by Alec Foster, the winner is a daughter of now Gauteng-0based sire Jackson (Dynasty) out of the three-time winning Captain Al mare, Petala. Assistant trainer Des Mclachlan did the honours.

Winchester Mansion (Louis Mxothwa) returns
THE WEEKEND FEATURE MERITS The National Horseracing Authority handicappers have reported on the assessment the feature race ratings for this past weekend. Gr3 World Sports Betting Pocket Power Stakes WINCHESTER MANSION remained unchanged on a mark of 99 following his victory in the World Sports Betting Pocket Power Stakes (Grade 3) at Kenilworth on Saturday 25 June. The
Handicappers were of the view that 4th placed BARATHEON made for the most suitable line horse which leaves him unchanged on a rating of 90. In rating the race this way the winner only achieves a rating of 92 - well below his official rating of 99, however, it was considered that this race produced a time that was a full 2,67 seconds slower than the World Sports Betting River Jetez Stakes (Listed) which took place approximately 35 minutes earlier. The Handicappers felt that it was unlikely that WINCHESTER HILLS had performed to the same level here than when it ran 2nd
77
to GEM KING in the WSB Legal Eagle Stakes (Grade 3) on 21 May, given that the race time was actually 2.32 seconds faster than MARIA QUEROL managed when winning the Stormsvlei Stakes (Listed) run earlier that day. There were increases for 2nd placed THEFUTUREISBRIGHT and 3rd place TOP QUALITY who were both increased to 91 from 82 and 86 respectively and they will
now be rated 1 pound higher the BARATHEON who they beat at level weights and these three would now meet on correct weight terms should they all meet in a Handicap race. There were no other changes in this event. Listed World Sports Betting River Jetez Stakes YOUNG LOVE had her rating increased from 95 to 98 after showing her versatility when winning the World Sports Betting River Jetez Stakes (Listed) at Kenilworth on Saturday. The Handicappers were of the view that runner-up MARIA QUEROL would not have run below her rating having beaten the rest of the field by at least 6,75 lengths and accordingly opted to select her as the line horse for this event. There were increases for 3rd placed DOUBLE CHECK, who despite producing a performance figure of 84, was only given a partial increase from 71 to 74 and HIGH DUDGEON who was similarly given only a partial increase from 69 to 72 having achieved a performance figure of 82. The Handicappers took cognizance of the fact that the River Jetez Stakes was not a Handicap and these two fillies were not weighted of their official merit ratings,
but ran at unfavorable weight terms. It was therefore considered that their performances here may not be sustainable given their overall profiles. There were no drops for any runners in the event. Listed WSB Sign Up Now Ladies Mile SO FLAWLESS has had her rating raised from 96 to 100 following her win in the Listed WSB Sign Up Now Ladies Mile over 1600, at Kenilworth on Saturday. The Handicappers were of the view that runner-up VERONICA MARS made for a suitable line horse when assessing this race, which leaves her unchanged on a mark of 97. There were ratings adjustment to two other runners in this event, DUPLICITY dropped from 87 to 85 and CELTIC NIGHT was reduced to 84 from 86. Listed WSB Bet With The Best Olympic Duel Stakes GOING UP has had her rating raised from 92 to 98 following her win in the Listed WSB Bet With The Best Olympic Duel Stakes over 1200m at Kenilworth on Saturday. The Handicappers were of the unanimous view that both MAJOR ATTRACTION and PHIL’S DANCER made for the correct line horses when assessing this event and accordingly their ratings remain unchanged on 103 and 102 respectively. There were ratings drops for two 78
runners in this race, WINTER MOSAIC was dropped from 99 to 94 after failing to confirm her performance in the Listed Milkwood Stakes and MARMALISA received a 3 pounds drop from 93 to 90. • Media release by National Horseracing Authority on Tuesday 28 June 2022

COURAGE & CLASS! 82
Newcastle Racecourse
83 Trueshan defies the weight to win under Hollie Doyle
The Alan King trained Trueshan made history over the weekend when victorious in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle racecourse. He put up one of the greatest weight-carrying performances of modern times on the flat, shouldering 10st 8lbs, whilst conceding between 19 lbs and 30lbs to his nineteen rivals. In metric terms that equates to the six-year-old having to carry just over 67kgs over 3200m, conceding between 9.5kgs and 13.5kgs to the field! He justified favouritism under an inspired Hollie Doyle when getting up to beat Spirit Mixer who was in receipt of 28lbs. A gelded son of French stallion Planteur, Trueshan has won twelve of his twenty starts including two at the top level – the Gr1 Goodwood Cup and the Prix du Cadran at ParisLongchamp - to earn his official rating of 124. Originally targeted at the Ascot Gold Cup earlier this month, he was prevented
from doing so due to ground conditions. He has never run on turf with the going described as firmer than good. The Northumberland Plate, run on the artificial tapeta surface suits as far as underfoot conditions are concerned, however, unlike most flat handicaps there is no ceiling to the weights. A first prize of £81,000 may have been an added incentive for a horse that needed to run after missing his intended target, but that left the small matter of having to give lumps of weight away all round. Alan King admitted on Sunday he had been "very surprised" to see him start 3-1 favourite. He could not see his star stayer defying a rating of 120 on Saturday when dropping him back to handicap company as a prep race for the Goodwood Cup. “I'm still finding it quite difficult to take in," said King. "It was something quite special to see.” “I thought he'd run very well but I was thinking I'd have been very happy if he was in the first four or first six. I couldn't really see him winning off that mark. However, I had no option, I had to get a run into him.” King added: “Hollie was firmly of the opinion, both after his first win
84
of the season at Nottingham and yesterday, that he's improved again since last year and you'd have to think the form book says that.” Doyle has now won seven from eight rides on Trueshan and King felt her experience was key. “He and Hollie are a great partnership. He was a little bit keen down the back, but she knows him so well.” The trainer is now hoping for rain so that conditions will allow for a successful defence of last year's ground-breaking first Group 1 victory in the Goodwood Cup, for which Trueshan is a best-priced 11-4 ante-post favourite. “He came back safely last night and now that he's had a run, he can have a quiet week or ten days and then we can build him back up towards Goodwood,” said the trainer. Ascot Gold Cup winners Kyprios and Stradivarius tackling Trueshan at Glorious Goodwood? One of the races of the season.

THE SOUND OF SAMBA! 87
Let the sound of Samba prevail and herald in a new age of supporters for Brazilian football! It’s from deep in South America that we find our appetite for club football quenched and as a delicate dessert: A 5/1 treble included… Bon appetit – or should I say Bom Apetite!
winning feeling experience is like! I mean they haven’t managed to score more than a single goal since April, let alone kill off an opposition.
Brazilian Serie A: Gameweek 15 Preview
Sunday 3 July
Saturday 2 July 12/10 Fluminense | Draw 17/10 | Corinthians 49/20 (21:30) The visitors come into this game off the back of a rather toothless draw to archrivals Santos. Fluminense have had the better of their guests in recent encounters, with the hosts winning four of their last six. For me, under 2.5 goals at 9/20 is the banker though. These sides have seen more than two goals being scored between them just once in the last seven years! As a great man once said – “if it aint broke…” 33/10 Juventude | Draw 2/1 | Atletico Mineiro 17/20 (21:30) I’m not sure Juventude remember what that
The same cannot be said for their guests though, Mineiro come into the game after winning three on the bounce and scoring more than a goal in every one. Get behind the visitors with confidence.
18/10 Santos | Draw 18/10 | Flamengo 15/10 (00:00) Tricky game I think, both teams have largely blown hot and cold all season and stayed clear of any consistency. Flamengo have been a bit more direct – even at their own expense – whereas Santos looks as though they prefer ball retention and playing through the phases. I can’t see where these two can be split, so why keep trying to complicate it? Back the draw at a steady price. 29/20 Ceara | Draw 17/10 | Internacional 39/20 (00:00) Historically these sides cannot really be separated but given the canvas of their respective seasons – you must side with the visitors. Ceara haven’t been able to get past their opposition for an agonizing five weeks, I’m not sure that this changes anytime soon. Internacional haven’t themselves exactly blown teams out of the water, but their results have been 88
there and there abouts. At 39/20 you shouldn’t need too much more convincing to have a dabble. 9/20 Palmeiras | Draw 11/4 | Athletico Paranaense 6/1 (02:00) You might look at this fixture and think it will be titanic – given their table positions – but I think it will be incredibly one-sided. The hosts have been surgical so far in the domestic campaign and I can’t see them being beaten here. 9/20 is generous – get stuck in. 12/10 Avai | Draw 18/10 | Cuiaba 24/10 (17:00) There isn’t much to split these two sides at the end of the day. I mean looking at their results so far might extract a well-deserved ‘eh’ and maybe a shoulder shrug – but aren’t going to expect them to start shooting the lights out in the league. The markets might lean toward a home win, but I’m going to go with a draw. I wouldn’t add it to too many multiples – but if you require a ‘get out stakes’ this weekend, well this might be the place to go. 39/20 Atletico Goianinse | Draw 17/10 | Sau Paulo 29/20 (21:00)
Sau Paulo seems to have an affinity with stalemates, to the point where even after just 14 rounds of fixtures, I think they will live to regret those missed opportunities. The hosts haven’t been much better though, and I don’t think they can match their guests all over the football field. I’m going to back the away win/draw double chance and over 1.5 goals at even money. 8/10 America Mineiro | Draw 2/1 | Goias 33/10 (23:00) I must be honest, the price available on the home win
surprised me. They’ve struggled so far in the Brazilian elite league and with such an inconsistent and uninspiring recent record – 8/10 seems short.
into this game. Yes, they’ve blown hot and cold – and probably deserve to be last – but they have shown they know how to win.
Their visitors come into the game off the back of a 1-0 home win, and they will undoubtedly find confidence in that result. I’m going to play devil’s advocate and challenge the bookies here – back the away win/draw double chance at 8/10.
It’s from that point I take my cue and am inclined to go with them. However, the betting angle I recommend for larger multiples and collections is both teams scoring at even money! TREBLE @ 4/1
33/20 Coritiba | Draw 17/10 | Fortaleza 7/4 (23:00) Not exactly the fixture that will steal the headline, but last-placed Fortaleza (at least on paper) look to be the favoured team coming
