Saturday also marks a return to people on track after the covid-19 pandemic led to a ghostly silence in 2020 and 2021. The race was first run in

1897 over 1600m for a stake of 500 sovereigns and named The Durban Turf Club Handicap. While we are used to it being run on the first Saturday in July, in 1897 it was run on 17 July, the third Saturday that month. In 1899 the stake was increased to £1000. In 1902 the crowds could enjoy the new (mostly finished) grandstand. In 1903 the stake jumped to £1250 & it was the first year that an official time was taken (Henry

Nourse’s chestnut filly Peerless won it in 1 min 42.5 seconds). It was also the first year the race was run as ‘The Rothmans July’ (not the Rothmans July Handicap). In 1991 Flaming Rock won the July from the 20 draw. The Snaith Racing Team continued their Hollywoodbets Durban July day build-up in good style when the talented Gimmethegreenlight colt Light Speed went all the way to win the R250 000 World Sports Betting Gr3 Langerman in courageous style. When Grant van Niekerk does things right, there are few riders to match him and the 31 year old rode a cracker from the front on a clearly promising sort. Even when Louis Mxothwa and the Gujadhur family’s Port Louis (another Gimmethegreenlight son!) moved up looking a winner late, Van Niekerk straightened Light Speed and didn’t panic as the Maine Chance-bred colt soared home.

In a thrilling finish to the R150 000 WSB.co.za Listed Irridescence Stakes at Kenilworth on Saturday, Ridgemont Highlands rider Greg Cheyne got the Jackson filly Bonika up to shade Richard Fourie on Miss Marguerite in the shadow of the post. On a beautiful sunny winter’s day at the Southern Suburbs track, the outcome went to the judge, with ace racecaller Rouvaun Smit leaning towards Bonika on the outside, but without any certainty. horses, Bonika made it three wins with four places from eight starts and took her stakes tally to R233 100 with a courageous victory. “She was beautifully bred and Glen and I went across the road to have a look at her. We liked her and thought we would take a chance at R15 000. We couldn’t go too far wrong at that price and she has really done so well and has so much heart,” said a thrilled Kathi, wife of Woodhill Racing conditioner Glen, who spoke to the Sporting Post from Durban. 83 Trueshan defies the weight to win under Hollie Doyle

The Alan King trained Trueshan made history over the weekend when victorious in the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle racecourse. He put up one of the greatest weight-carrying performances of modern times on the flat, shouldering 10st 8lbs, whilst conceding between 19 lbs and 30lbs to his nineteen rivals. In metric terms that equates to the six-year-old having to carry just over 67kgs over 3200m, conceding between 9.5kgs and 13.5kgs to the field! He justified favouritism under an inspired Hollie Doyle when getting up to beat Spirit Mixer who was in receipt of 28lbs. A gelded son of French stallion Planteur, Trueshan has won twelve of his twenty starts including two at the top level – the Gr1 Goodwood Cup and the Prix du Cadran at ParisLongchamp - to earn his official rating of 124. Originally targeted at the Ascot Gold Cup earlier this month, he was prevented

from doing so due to ground conditions. He has never run on turf with the going described as firmer than good. The Northumberland Plate, run on the artificial tapeta surface suits as far as underfoot conditions are concerned, however, unlike most flat handicaps there is no ceiling to the weights. A first prize of £81,000 may have been an added incentive for a horse that needed to run after missing his intended target, but that left the small matter of having to give lumps of weight away all round. Alan King admitted on Sunday he had been "very surprised" to see him start 3-1 favourite. He could not see his star stayer defying a rating of 120 on Saturday when dropping him back to handicap company as a prep race for the Goodwood Cup. “I'm still finding it quite difficult to take in," said King.
