SUPER SATURDAY – TIME TO SET RECORD STRAIGHT!

5 Candiese Lenferna

After fluffing her lines with excuses on Hollywoodbets Durban July day, Snaith star Captain’s Ransom has been priced up as a 7-2 antepost favourite for the R1 million Gr1 Mercury Sprint which will be run at Hollywoodbets Greyville on the ‘Super Saturday’ season climax on 30 July.

by the fireworks, and finding a pedestrian pace not to her liking. After suggestions that she would be given a break after winning 5 of her 6 term starts, and brought back fresh in the Cape Summer, it seems that a decent draw and the fact that the Mercury Sprint will not be run under the lights, may have invoked a rethink on the part of the connections.

was the top stayer last season, and defence of his title is definitely on his agenda. There are some decent challengers for him this year, including stablemate Black Thorn, Grade 1 SA Derby winner Aragosta, and Shangani, who beat Nebraas at Turffontein on 3 July.

The winners of last year’s Grade 1 Champions Cup and Mercury Sprint, as well as the Grade 3 Marshalls World Of Sport Gold Cup, have all been nominated to defend their titles at Hollywoodbets Greyville on the final big day of a top notch season.

Captain’s Ransom currently narrowly heads the SA Horse Of The Year table, and victory on Super Saturday will seal the deal.

Also run on the day are the Grade 1 Premiers Champion Stakes and Thekwini Stakes over 1600m, and the Umkhomazi Stakes and The Debutante over 1200m, all for two-year-olds.

Captain’s Ransom was beaten at dirty short odds in the Brentford FC Garden Province Stakes a fortnight ago after being upset

Hollywoodbets Durban July runnerup Jet Dark won the Champions Cup over 1800m in 2021, and he has been joined by eight other entries in his title defence, which includes Kommetdieding, Linebacker, Al Muthana, MK’s Pride and Astrix. The 2021 Gold Cup was won by Sean Tarry-trained Nebraas, who

PURE GOLD DEBATE It is refreshing to see the SA Derby winner possibly lining up in the Marshalls World Of Sport Gold Cup. There is a perennial debate about the Equus Stayers Award and it usually hinges on whether the Gr1 SA Derby winner should get it ahead of an out-and-out stayer. There was a camp of thought who disagreed with last year's decision to award it to Nebraas last season, who had won both the

Grade 3 Gold Vase over 3000m and Grade 3 Gold Cup over 3200m with low weights, because that left the WSB SA Triple Crown winner Malmoos empty-handed. Nebraas will now be given the opportunity to prove a point because he will carry topweight and faces a field that includes an SA Derby winner. Both Nebraas and Aragosta are merit rated 118. Aragosta will receive only 2.5kg from Nebraas despite the weight for age scale at this time of the 6

year allowing three-yearolds 3,5kg. This is due to the weights being compressed. The topweight will have an easier task than usual this year as the minimum weight has been set at 54kg, as opposed to the normal 52kg. The DSTV Gold Vase winner Black Thorn would receive 9kg from Nebraas in a normal handicap but will now only receive six.

PETER LEADS SNAITH IN TITLE CHASE

With the Marshalls World Of Sport Gold Cup raceday just under three weeks away, Turffontein trainer Paul Peter holds an approximate R2,7 million stakes lead over defending champion Justin Snaith in the race for the 2021/22 SA champion trainer title. Paul Peter is on 214 winners (18,58% win strike-rate) after Saturday’s Turffontein racemeeting. The Gauteng maestro,

who has over 200 horses under his control, is ready to establish a new benchmark in his maiden championship title chase and looks ready to beat Sean Tarry’s record of 215 winners set in the Randjesfontein resident’s halcyon days of the 2016/17 season, when earning over R33 million in stakes.

While there are 21 racemeetings left locally, the major gamechanger is likely to be the big Hollywoodbets Greyville day on Saturday 30 July, where the R750 000 Gold Cup, together with 4 Gr1 races (total stakes of R3 million),

8

and three Gr2 contests (total stakes R650 000) will be run. Despite the decision to rest stable kingpin Captain’s Ransom, Hollywoodbets Durban July runner-up Jet Dark will defend his Gr1 Champions Cup title, and the Snaith yard are always competitive on the East Coast. The entries for these events will be published after 11h00 on Monday morning.

On the minor feature front, the follow races remain:

• 30 July HWB Greyville:L MWOS Darley Arabian R150 000

• 15 July Fairview: L Port Elizabeth Gold Cup R175 000

It was ratified by the National Board of the NHA in May 2015 that stakes earned by horses competing in restricted races are excluded from the national statistics.

• 17 July HWB Greyville: Ethekwini Sprint (Poly) R120 000 • 23 July Kenilworth: Gr3 Champagne Stakes R200 000 • 23 July Kenilworth: Gr3 Final Fling Stakes R200 000 • 29 July Fairview: L Champion Juvenile Cup R200 000 • 30 July HWB Greyville:L MWOS Umngeni Hcap R150 000

As a result, this ruling applies when determining the national champion breeder, champion sire and champion trainer title. The decision to exclude the stakes of restricted races from the national statistics was motivated by the view that these races may potentially influence the log positions based on their ‘closed’ nature. This does not apply to owners and jockeys, as all owners have the

9

right to buy and compete where they want to and jockeys are at liberty to accept engagements as and where they wish. As a result, restricted race stakes are included for owners and jockeys log stats. Last season’s champion owner Suzette Viljoen (R7,9 million) is currently third behind the rampant Drakenstein Stud (R11,3 million) and the Hollywood Syndicate (R8,4 million), who have attained record levels of success this term. The Equus awards function is scheduled for Wednesday 24 August.

10 Piere Strydom canters to post on Belgarion – history never happened but he is chasing the 5500 winner record

STRYDOMS MOVE TO CAPE ‘At the age of 56,11 champion jockey Piere Strydom is tying up professional loose ends and making changes in his life’

At the age of 56, champion jockey Piere Strydom is tying up professional loose ends and making changes in his life. This includes a move with his Attorney wife Chrisna to the affluent wine-producing suburb of Constantia in the Cape, where the excited couple intend running an Airbnb. One of the greatest riders to grace the turf in this country, Piere Strydom recently made a sensational comeback to the saddle after an injury-enforced absence of some 14 months following a semidetached retina. While his first ride back was a winner, as the dependable

Nexus came home powerfully under the Snaith banner, Piere’s brave bid to equal Anton Marcus’ Durban July quintet of winners failed to materialise. Former winner Belgarion finished well down the illustrious field. “I feel that Smanga Khumalo won the Hollywoodbets Durban July at the start on Sparkling Water as he had her out and placed beautifully. Belgarion didn’t jump well and after that the muddled pace and our position meant that we were always playing catch up of sorts. I was also forced to switch wide as after they eased it up a bit, he was running on to Kommetdieding’s heels. The Hollywoodbets Durban July is a no-holds barred race where you need luck to go your way. Belgarion is a lovely horse and a victory would have meant plenty to me and the connections–

Piere is introduced to the crowd before the Hollywoodbets Durban July

He says that fitness had not been an issue on his return to the saddle, but weight was a different story. “We aren’t as young as we used to be! So losing weight is not a case of a quick-fix crash diet and exercise. I was about 5kgs overweight after the break and thought that would be manageable to lose. I lost 3kgs but battled with the other 2kgs. So from looking for rides at 55kgs, I am now limited to 57kgs plus.” When he returned to the saddle, Piere was also chasing his 11 win shortfall

but it was not meant to be,” the veteran told the Sporting Post.

to reach a sensational 5500 milestone. “I am currently only nine winners short on that score, and I will be pursuing that goal during the Cape spring and summer as we are relocating down South,” he says, adding that he and Chrisna will be vacationing in the UK during August. “Chrisna practices law and has quite a few clients in the Cape. We thought we’d combine the change in environment with a lifestyle adjustment and will be running an Airbnb. I hope

that the racing industry out-oftowners from Gauteng, KZN and Gqeberha will be supporting our new venture!” Questioned about any rides on Marshalls World Of Sport Gold Cup day, Piere says that most of the top yards have their jockeys entrenched. “It’s not easy getting a good ride these days as there is a new generation of talented rider around and they have forged relationships with the top trainers. But I am available if anybody requires my services,” he adds with a smile. Piere tells us that he is also open

13

to offers of a sponsorship. Given his achievements in a career spanning almost 40 years, it could eventually lead to a movie on the back of his status as a legend in the annals of South African turf history. “I’d be happy to consider a sponsorship. It’s good positive media and I hope to reach the milestone in the Cape summer season. I’m not going to go on past my sell-by date, either though!”

ZIETS LIVES IN AN IDEAL WORLD The Ideal World mare Rattle Mouse scored a courageous victory in Friday’s R150 000 Walmer Handicap at Fairview, when she dug deep under JP van der Merwe to give SA Champion owner Suzette Viljoen her 102nd winner. The top three to finish are all daughters of the

Mauritzfontein Kingmambo resident, Ideal World. Described as ‘crazy as hell’ by an elated trainer Zietsman Oosthuizen, who bemoaned the fact that it wasn’t a black-type feature, the Rathmor Stud-bred mare vindicated her passionate conditioner’s faith when registering her fourth victory from 32 starts with 10 places, pushing her stakes bank up to nearly R310 000.

15

“Oom Japie (JP van der Merwe) rode a brilliant race. Thanks so much to Suzette and Basie for the patience too, “added a happy Zietsman Oosthuizen, who said he was 9 winners short of hitting his career 100 winner mark this term. Starting at 12-1, the consistent Rattle Mouse beat Sharon Kotzen’s pair

of Wings Of Fire (12-1) and Ideal Angel 6-1, by a quarter length. The fancied Golightly (1310) gave Greg Cheyne a torrid time and finished out of the money. The winner was a R250 000 National Yearling Sale buy,

who started her career with Justin Snaith. She is out of the one-time winning Alami mare, Rattled. Hollywoodbets-sponsored Gavin Smith and jockey Warren Kennedy enjoyed a treble on the afternoon. Trainers Zietsman Oosthuizen and Jacques Strydom

16

saddled two winners apiece. The next Fairview racemeeting is on 15 July and is headlined by the Listed PE Gold Cup.

BLING HITS WORLD RANKINGS Former SA Champion jockey Smanga Bling Khumalo has been listed at joint sixth on the latest Longines World's Best Jockey rankings published this past weekend. Please click here for the rankings The 36 year old, who weighed 30kgs when he started and hails from the KwaMashu township L section, produced a gem

of a ride earlier this month to win the R5 million Gr1 Hollywoodbets Durban July on Sparkling Water for Mike de Kock and well-known owner Mary Slack. This was his second win in the premier event after Heavy Metal in 2013. A natural showman, Khumalo had the large crowd roaring in approval and capped the show with his trademark Frankie Dettori dismount.

Currently at fourth position on the national log with 163 winners at a strike-rate of 14,8%, Bling was dislodged from his mount Home Of The Brave en route to the start of the first race at Turffontein on Saturday. He suffered a sprained shoulder and hip but will be taking up his engagements according to his agent Monty Mariemuthoo.

NO EXCUSES, SAYS JOEY While nothing really went right in the build-up to the R5 million Hollywoodbets Durban July for Joey Soma and his Gr1 winning 3yo Red Saxon, the Turffontein veteran says that if he could have chosen a day to suffer a disappointment it would have been Saturday 2 July 2022. “The Hollywoodbets Durban July reawakened the spirit of the great race for me as somebody who has been a part of the game for 50 years. The build-up and the vibe, the organisation and the way we as connections were treated

in the Durban View Room on the day, was simply outstanding. It was a unanimous opinion of everybody I spoke to – Gold Circle and Hollywoodbets deserve every accolade for finding the fire and soul of a racing event that is a gem in our proud history – it gives me genuine hope and I am already looking forward to next year,” Joey Soma told the Sporting Post on Saturday. He said there were logistical issues that would no doubt be remedied. “I was at the back when the fireworks upset Captain’s Ransom and a few of the other horses. And it’s not acceptable to run a big race past schedule. It’s not good for

the contestants, the public and for the international jurisdictions betting on it. But these are fixable items – overall, I salute the Gold Circle and Hollywoodbets Teams for a top class job well done!” A man who enjoys a wager, Joey said that it was a tough day on the punting front but that Xavion’s victory in the Listed Compendium Insurance Brokers Handicap as the shadows lengthened, had gotten them all out of it. “That’s why we love this game. We are on the canvas Candiese Lenferna

there could be no genuine hardluck stories for any of the runners and that Sparkling Water was a deserved winner.

With three below-par runs to Red Saxon’s name and an official gallop, where a dead bird added to the trauma, the standing down of potential history-making lady rider Rachel Venniker just five days prior to the race, told a story of a prep straight out of a horror movie.

“We are going to give Red Saxon a good break now. We need to restore his confidence and will aim him at the Autumn Season – races like the Horse Chestnut. We will do his bloods regularly and consider gelding him. We know he has the ability and for me as the trainer, it’s my job to get him running back at that level.”

“We are dealing with flesh and blood, and these challenges arise. To top it all, Red Saxon was never a happy camper at Summerveld. He is a different horse at his Turffontein home base. Then he got cut into during the race – but nothing serious to be fair. Somebody has to run last. This was our turn. No excuses. We got beaten fair and square.” Joey says that he felt that

Joey saddled a smart-looking winner in Lady Of Power at the Vaal on Thursday. He says that it’s amazing what a winner does for the morale and spirit in the yard. “You travel, have expectations and then nothing works out. Back home a few days, and a winner brings us back boxing. I will enter Lady Of Power for the fillies race on Gold Cup day at Hollywoodbets Greyville at the end of this month. She has ability but let’s see if she gets in.”

20

The veteran said it had not been a golden season in terms of winners for his yard, but that Red Saxon’s Gr1 SA Classic victory had remedied that. “Grade 1 wins are the reason we wake up shortly after most people have gone to bed. That Gr1 trophy makes up for the win numbers. We start all over on 1 August and we never stop dreaming and hoping for better things!”

place on the overall Juvenile List, he is long odds-on to become Ridgemont Highlands’ second successive champion freshman sire after Rafeef claimed the title last season.

At the time of writing, Ridgemont Highlandsbased Canford Cliffs leads the way, both in terms of winners (13) and stakes won (R1,388,700). Also in fifth

Boasting an impressive haul of Gr1 victories in the Irish 2000 Guineas, Sussex, Lockinge, Queen Anne and St James’s Palace, Canford Cliffs proved himself Europe’s dominant miler at three and four.

23

He retired to Coolmore Stud in 2012, from where he shuttled to Australia until his purchase by Ridgemont Highlands as a proven sire of Graded stakes winners in both hemispheres. As befits a horse of his stature, Canford Cliffs covered well over 100 mares in his first South African season and it is only fitting

that his first stakes winner, the Summer Juvenile Stakes and East Cape Nursery winner Cliff Top, was bred by Ridgemont Highlands. Racing is very much a numbers game and having enjoyed such strong support in his first local season, it comes as no surprise that his winners have come from a sizeable 35 runners. That the majority have shown plenty of toe is also no coincidence, since Canford Cliffs won the Gr2 Coventry Stakes at two. In addition, he is a son of the Gr1 juvenile winner Tagula. Mind you, those that have shown scope and have

scored over 1400m and 1600m include Meridius, who finds himself amongst the entries for the Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes, while daughters I Am Regal and Rock The Fox have thrown their hats into the ring for the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes. Chasing Canford Cliffs to the title is Maine Chance-based Erupt, whose seven winners from 25 runners have earned R932 500, which also places him in ninth position on the Juvenile Sires list. A son of Dubawi from the sireproducing female family of Encosta De Lago, Flying Spur and Lode, Erupt certainly lived up to his fine pedigree on the track, winning both the Gr1 Grand Prix de Paris and Woodbine’s Gr1 Canadian

International. He too, has sired a first-crop stakes winner in Karangetang, who started his career in sensational fashion by winning the Listed Storm Bird Stakes on debut and following up in the Gr3 Protea Stakes. Considering that he was a late maturing stayer, Erupt’s ability to sire seven juvenile winners is a feather in his cap, especially as all have won over sprints. Maine Chance owner Dr Andreas Jacobs is understandably proud of the young stallion: “We are thrilled with JC Photos

the start of Erupt, if not pleasantly surprised. As we know with Dubawi in Europe, he does have the ability to put speed into his progeny and so do his sons at stud. With the troublesome first year in South Africa, Erupt was only able to cover a very small book and to have had the juvenile success off those small numbers, is very encouraging. We are most excited about his crops to follow, as he more than doubled his first crop covering size in his next two years and his second crop yearlings have been well received at the sales this year. We fully expect him to follow through with more stamina horses and when the numbers kick in from his next crops, he should really make his presence felt,” he added.

son of leading American sire Uncle Mo, he took his time to get off the mark and only sired his first winner in early June, when Justin Snaith-trained Royal Aussie broke his maiden at Kenilworth over 1400m. Royal Mo has since made up for lost time with Mo Jive and Rule Of Thumb both scoring fluent victories over a similar distance. Furthermore, his nine starters to date also include four that have placed. Now that the winners are coming, there is every reason to believe that this handsome individual will keep the momentum going.

Another to keep an eye on is Klawervlei’s Royal Mo.

Rounding out the quintet of successful freshman sires is KZNbased Rabada. Trained by Mike Azzie, this grandson of Storm Cat

Drakenstein-based Gold Standard, a Gr1-performed son of the farm’s champion stallion Trippi, was also slow out of the gate before siring a trio of winners in fairly quick succession, amongst which the Drakenstein homebreds Hold My Hand and Golden Hostess, both of which have been entered for the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes.

set the seal on an unbeaten juvenile campaign with a smart victory in the Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes at Hollywoodbets Greyville and returned twelve months later to earn his classic stripes in the Gr1 Daily News 2000. Initially retired to birthplace Summerhill Stud, he now stands at Bruce le Roux’s Blue Sky Thoroughbreds. To date, he has sired a brace of winners in Summerhill-bred duo Mysterious Girl and Onnetilia, both fillies scoring second time out. With a good number of placed runners lurking in the wings, that total is sure to grow, for as Bruce remarked: “We obviously would have liked to see a couple more winners, but the feedback is positive and many report that the Rabada’s are only now starting to come to hand.”

RIDGEMONT HIGHLANDS ON PARADE The Ridgemont Highlands Stallion Day of 2022 is set to take place on Friday 5 August, with the stallion parade due to commence at 13h00, followed by luncheon. Parties interested in attending the Stallion Day are asked to RSVP, by 29th July, to shaylene@ridgemont.co.za

Their five time Gr1 winning stallion Canford Cliffs, one of the finest turf milers of the century, has made an explosive start with his first South African runners in 2021-2022. Captain Al’s star son Malmoos looks an exciting addition to the South African stallion band, while Potala Palace continues to make waves, despite having a relatively small number of runners to his name. 25

The sensational Rafeef is without doubt one of the most exciting stallions standing at stud in South Africa. New man Real Gone Kid is one of the best bred horses retiring to stud in 2022.

BROODMARE TITLE WILL BE CLOSE The title of South Africa’s Broodmare Of The Year for the 2021/22 season appears very much up for grabs. With one final major race meeting to be run, the award could only be wrapped up at the end of the current racing season. The likes of Espumanti, Imvula, Lyrical Linda, and Secret Obsession, to name but a few, are all mares who

have had notable updates this season. Top-class racemare Espumanti, a daughter of outstanding broodmare sire Dansili, had already produced Gr2 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge runner up Gin Fizz (Soft Falling Rain) as her first foal but went considerably better when her second foal turned out to be this season’s Gr1 Hollywoodbets Durban July winner Sparkling Water (Silvano).

27

To date, the latter has won a trio of graded races with her earnings currently standing at over R4,354 million. Imvula, a half-sister to Dancer’s Daughter, is not only dam of Equus Champion, and this season’s Wilgerbosdrift Triple Tiara winner, Rain In Holland, but also the luckless Rain In Newmarket – who has finished second in six

graded or listed races. Imvula’s two-year-old son Itsrainingwilliam (William Longsword) also caught the eye when shedding his maiden by three lengths at Kenilworth recently. Former Garden Province Stakes queen Lyrical Linda (Jallad) produced her fourth stakes winner when her daughter Lyrical Dance (Vercingetorix) captured the Listed WSB Scarlet Lady, in so doing joining the likes of Gr1 Summer Cup winner Liege, Secretariat Stakes winning sire Lance and Thukela Handicap winner Lockheed Jetstar. Winner of the Listed Syringa Handicap, Secret Obsession (by emerging broodmare

sire Captain Al) celebrated her second stakes winner when her son Salvator Mundi (Dynasty) won the Listed Kenilworth Cup earlier this season before finishing second in the Gr3 Track And Ball Derby. The well-bred Secret Obsession also ranks as the dam of Salvator Mundi’s Gr2 winning own brother Bunker Hunt, as well as former Gr2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas runner-up Silver Thursday (Silvano). Sea Point, a winning daughter of successful broodmare sire Spectrum, marked her second graded stakes winner, following Gr1 Gold Medallion winner Sand And Sea, when her son Winchester Mansion (Trippi) won this season’s Gr3 WSB Pocket Power Stakes, while Pink Tourmaline became her dam Sapphire Gem (Trippi)’s second graded stakes winner when

victorious in the Gr2 Track And Ball Oaks. Galileo’s beautifully-bred daughter Miss Galidora has had a fine season this past year or so, with the half-sister to French classic winner, and successful sire, Clodovil, responsible for this season’s Gr1 World Sports Betting SA Derby winner Aragosta, and also the very impressive debut winner Mrs Browning, a full-sister to Aragosta. Dynasty’s brilliant daughter Beach Beauty, an Equus Champion in both 2013 and 2014, has proven nearly as successful at stud as she was on the racecourse. The seventeen-time winner, and five-time Gr1 victress, has

already produced a pair of graded stakes winners in the form of Gr2 WSB Guineas winner Wild Coast (Trippi) and the 2021 Gr2 Western Cape Fillies Championship queen Amanzimtoti (Trippi). Beach Beauty is also dam of the recent Gr3 DSTV Gold Vase runner-up Rex Union and the very impressive debut winner Narina Trogon (Silvano), who caught the eye when scoring first time out over 1000 metres. Candy Stripes’ daughter Peru looks to be another leading contender for this year’s award.

A half-sister to triple Gr1 winner Paraca, South Africa’s Champion 2YO Filly of 2001, Peru is dam of this season’s Gr1 Jonsson Workwear Cape Derby winner Pomp And Power, and is also responsible for the smart filly Pucallpa, who finished third in the Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery. Pomp And Power also claimed the 2021 Gr2 Concorde Cup. Peru could arguably have had a Gr1 winner earlier in her career when her son Punta Arenas finished a controversial second in the 2015 Gr1 Vodacom Durban July. In total, Punta Arenas earned more than R2 million during a career which saw the Silvano

29

gelding capture a trio of graded races. • The Equus Awards will be held at Emperors Palace on Wednesday 24 August.

Pretty Polly Stakes winner Galla Vanting comes under the hammer

SATURDAY SALE IS WORTH A LOOK! Captain Lannister, the consistent and lightly raced classic performer, is one of nine lots to be sold at a Horses In Training Sale after the race meeting at Turffontein on Saturday, which will be conducted under the auspices of Cape Thoroughbred Sales (CTS). Lot 4, Captain Lannister, is a son of Captain Of All from Ashley Fortune’s yard, who showed his talent early with a fourth in the 2021 G1

Gold Medallion over 1200m, won from 1000m – 1450m, and then proved his scope and versatility with an excellent and close-up third to Red Saxon and Safe Passage in the G1 SA Classic over 1800m. Also from Fortune Racing is Lot 1, Winter Smoke, a fast and classy, multiple-Graded winner by What A Winter, with bold black type and a good female line, and has good paddock value. While two-year-old Gimme The Flame (Lot 2) has not won a race in

34

six starts, she has good form to show against high class sorts Prophet and Time Fo Orchids (both Gr2 placed on July Day), and her first taste of success is not far off. As a daughter of Gimmethegreenlight out of a Captain Al mare, she already has future broodmare potential. Lot 3: Galla Vanting, the smart unbeaten daughter of Querari, and winner of the Gr3 Pretty Polly Stakes;

all class, and set for a top career. Lot 5: Rosy Lemon, an unraced filly by Ideal World from a mare by Strike Smartly, bred for ground from the family of Meranti, and related to eight-time winner Amazing Strike. Lot 6: Lidl Miss Sunshine, is a beautifully bred daughter of Silvano and a mare by Fastnet Rock. She has shown ability with an early 1400m win from just six starts, and promises more. Lot 7: Funky Music (Capetown Noir), has won three races, with 14 places

to his credit. His most recent win came at the Vaal late in May. He has not raced since, but is a perennial bread-and-butter handicapper, with more in his tank at four years of age. Lot 8: Edward Longshanks is a perfect fun horse, with a win and six places from 15 starts, a consistent low handicap form, and who will win more races. He is by William Longsword out of a mare by leading broodmare sire, Var. Lot 9: is the five-year-old mare Before The Dawn, whose record shows 7 wins and, still, an apparent zest for racing. She is a quality sprinter by Oratorio out of a mare by Var, with a good stud value, and she may well win again before she

35

departs to the broodmare barn. CTS MD Grant Knowles said: “This is a small sale of horses in training in which quality and much promise is reflected in the race records and pedigrees. With two weeks to go, we will keep the entries open, as this sale will attract a good share of buyers.”

Mambo In Seattle (Kingmambo – Weekend In Seattle)

VALE MAMBO IN SEATTLE

With his son Royal Agility paying tribute by winning again in Hong Kong a week earlier, popular Gr1 stallion Mambo In Seattle was euthanised last Wednesday. Originally based at Moutonshoek in the Cape, the son of Kingmambo relocated to Clifton Stud in KZN in 2018.

“With a heavy heart I have to inform you that Mambo In Seattle had to be euthanised last Wednesday, having broken his tibia, between the hock and stifle, in the night in his box. He was found standing and no signs of being cast. As a farewell to Mambo, his son Royal Agility won again in Hong Kong last Friday – he has won two races in his last three starts in Hong Kong and was ridden by Lyle Hewitson,” Clifton’s

37

Peter Blyth told the Sporting Post. Mambo In Seattle produced a number of stakes horses, and also boasted a solid winners to runners record. In his first season his 28 male runners returned 22 winners and in his second season his 32 female runners returned 21 winners.

Mambo In Seattle, whose dam is a half-sister to the great AP Indy, was suited to South African-bred mares as his second and third dams are the blue hen mares Weekend Surprise and Lassie Dear respectively. These two mares have had a great influence on the South African thoroughbred breed. Lassie Dear is the dam of Al Mufti, who was SA Champion Sire, SA Champion Broodmare Sire and also sired the SA Champion Sire Captain Al as well as the Grade 1 producing sire Victory Moon. Weekend Surprise is the dam of the late

Wilgerbosdrift stallion Tiger Ridge (Storm Cat), who has had a lot of success in South Africa, including producing Triple Tiara heroine Cherry On The Top. Weekend Surprise’s greatest progeny was AP Indy, who was the US Champion three-year-old colt in 1992, the US Horse Of The Year in 1993, the leading sire in North America in both 2003 and 2006 and the leading broodmare sire in North America in 2015. Mambo In Seattle was bred on the same lines as the prominent USA stallion Lemon Drop Kid. Both stallions are by Kingmambo, both of their dams are by Seattle Slew and Lemon Drop Kid’s second dam is Lassie Dear, who is the third dam of Mambo In Seattle. As a racehorse his finest moment happened when he was beaten

38

a nose in the Gr1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga by Colonel John despite running six wide. The Travers Stakes is the thirdranked race for American three-year-olds according to international classifications behind only the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes. Mambo In Seattle, a 7/8 brother to Lemon Drop Kid, also won a Listed race over 1800m at three.

AHS VACC SHORTAGEDEADLINE EXTENDED The deadline for African horse sickness vaccinations has been extended from 31 October 2022 to 31 December 2022 for all horses that are resident in the AHS endemic/ infected zone,

Authority records in a press release published earlier this week that it has noted that Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP) Is experiencing a crisis in the supply of the registered African horse sickness (AHS) live attenuated vaccine.

is achieved under the crisis of supply.

In March this year it was reported that the Democratic Alliance received a petition with signatures from more than 6000 horse owners and breeders who expressed concerns about the shortage of African Horse Sickness vaccines and in some instances delayed delivery of vaccines.

Consequently, this has resulted in industry stakeholders such as vets, trainers, owners, and breeders having limited access to AHS vaccines.

• Horses that are under the age of 3 years old, or with less than 3 sets of vaccinations previously should be vaccinated as priority as they would be at highest risk of infection and disease. This is especially important for horses within the controlled area that are likely to travel as vaccination for these horses can only occur between June and October.

The National Horseracing

The NHA advises that it is recommended that during this time, and any other time, when supply may be an issue, the administration of the AHS vaccine that does become available should be done in a prioritized manner to ensure that optimal disease control

40

Below is the order in which vaccination administration should be prioritized by veterinarians during a time of supply crisis:

• Horses within the AHS controlled area that are likely to travel out of the AHS controlled area and have not been vaccinated within the last 24 months should be prioritized. • Horses in South Africa with less than 6 sets of vaccinations in their life and/or horses that are competing or moving regularly therefore increasing the risk of AHS spread. Regarding horses resident in the AHS controlled area (free zone, surveillance zone and protection zone), the legislated permitted AHS vaccination period of 1 June to 31 October 2022 remains in place unless/until DALRRD rule otherwise. The NHA will re-evaluate NHA rules for horses that

reside in the AHS controlled area that may be affected by the unavailability of the AHS vaccine individually and in consultation with SV Boland. “It is an offence to vaccinate horses in the AHS controlled area after 31 October 2022, unless a written exemption has been granted to do so by the national Director: Animal Health at DALRRD. Individual written and motivated applications for permission to vaccinate outside of the legal window period may be considered, under appropriate and strict vector protected conditions.” DALRRD Whilst vaccinating outside of the AHS controlled area – in the AHS infected zone – is not recommended to be done post 31 October, it is permissible without written exemption from the national Director: Animal Health at DALRRD.

After consultation with industry stakeholders, it has been deemed in this instance that the risk to the population of having a large number of unprotected/ poorly protected animals in the AHS endemic areas of the country, especially in areas where AHS outbreaks occur every year, should be mitigated where possible. As a result, the deadline for vaccinations as per Rule 39.1.1 has been extended from 31 October 2022 to 31 December 2022 for all horses that are resident in the AHS endemic/ infected zone. Please read more here.

WHY DON’T WE HAVE A HANDLE ON NUMBERS LIKE THIS? We can learn from the Americans when it comes to reporting on turnovers. The recently concluded Belmont Park spring/ summer meet generated $13,437,509 in average daily handle, the New York Racing Association announced. With this year’s 2 percent increase from 2021, average daily handle at the Belmont Park spring/summer meet has risen 23.1% since 2019.

On-track handle for the 2022 spring/summer meet totalled $57,531,001, an increase of 16.6 percent from the 2021 figure of $49,343,664. All-sources handle for the 44-day spring/summer meet totalled $591,250,409, which compares with $632,208,251 in 2021, when the meet was contested over 48 days. The June 11 Belmont Stakes Day card, highlighted by Mo Donegal’s victory in the 154th running of the $1.5 million Belmont Stakes, 41

generated all-sources handle of $98,766,906. Average field size for the 419 races run during the 2022 spring/summer meet was 7.35, a 3.6 percent decline from the 2021 average of 7.62. The 2022 spring/summer meet saw 233 races on dirt and 186 on the turf. Twenty-six races were forced off the turf because of weather.

Katak charges home under Vlad Duric

RIDGEMONT CHAMP SCORES AT KRANJI After a superb Hollywoodbets Durban July weekend at home and abroad, leading Cape breeders Ridgemont Highlands were celebrating again when their Cape Winter Series star Katak registered his most emphatic win to date at Kranji on Saturday.

2015 Stakes run over 2000m on Saturday.

Le Grange went with the snip.

The win was a much-welcome relief to his connections, who went through some head-scratching moments when the 2020 Cape Winter Series Triple Crown winner put in two disappointing runs following back-to-back wins earlier this year.

It paid off after the son of Potala Palace turned his form around in the Kranji Stakes A race, albeit with an obvious flaw still yet to be fixed.

It did not take long for Katak to make amends in the best possible way in the SG$100,000 Spanish Bay

He only beat two home in the Gr1 Kranji Mile (1600m) on May 21 at his last start. After giving it serious consideration, his trainer Ricardo

42

“It was a big call for me to geld the horse because if that didn’t work, where do we go,” quipped the winning trainer.

“To (owners) Marsh (Shirtliff, father), Guy (son), Bryn (Ressell), (racing manager) Mark (Van Deventer) and the breeders at Ridgemont Highlands Robertson Stud (South Africa), thank you so much for your support and the time you’ve given me with this horse. “I think there could be times they were scratching their head and thinking ‘does this clown know what he’s doing?’ “Today, he (Katak) showed me what I’ve always expected of him.Everything was against him, the weight

(58kgs), the draw (eight) but he still put paid to a decent field, with him giving weight to some multiple Group 1 winners. “Big thanks to Ayie (track rider) who rides him every morning. He’s not an easy horse to work. And to (assistant-trainer) Jacci (de Tert), who does a lot of work behind the scenes. It’s a great win, but I still want to work out why he is hanging out.” After assuming the leader’s role on the paint early, Katak (Vlad Duric) kept charging to the line, but started hanging out badly at the 250m. Hard Too Think (Marc Lerner),

43

stablemate Pennywise (Krisna Thangamani) and Circuit Mission (Ronnie Stewart) were making up ground and about to hunt him down. But under a few reminders from Duric, the favourite maintained the gap to an unassailable level to romp in by five lengths from Circuit Mission. Minister (Jake Bayliss) flew home to finish another neck away in third. The winning time over 2000m on the Short Course was 2min 2.49secs.

Duric noticed Katak’s tendency to lay out when the pair won in a barrier trial last Tuesday. He reckoned the waywardness could have been a bad habit since young. “He did hang out mildly in the trial but there was not much pressure then,” said the Australian jockey. “He’s sound in his action, so this probably was a habit he picked up when he was

a colt. We bowled along and he was too good. He’s a proper horse, but in saying that, the track today was too firm and some give in the ground would be better for him.” Duric, who is set to ride out the remaining season at Kranji, took home a hat-trick of wins on Saturday with two other winners, Illustrious ($12) in the $50,000 Countofmontecristo 2017 Stakes, a Class 4 Division 1 race (1200m) and Born To Win ($15) in the $30,000 Super Easy 2012 Stakes, a Class 5 race (1600m).

44

With his third win from nine starts in Singapore, Katak has amassed close to SG$260,000 (R3,2 million) in prizemoney for the Vasco Stable. Katak is a son of the Ridgemont Highlands-based Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes winner Potala Palace and the three-time winning Windrush mare Sapphire Silk.

AN EXCITING OPPORTUNITY FOR SOUTH AFRICAN BREEDERS Ridgemont Highlands is excited to announce that the blue-blooded speed machine Real Gone Kid will stand at Stud for the 2022 breeding season. The handsome chestnut bears striking similarities to Ridgemont Highlands' outstanding young sire Rafeef, with both Rafeef and Real Gone Kid being lightning-fast performers from the Redoute's Choice male line. A son of Redoute's Choice's greatest sire son, thus far, Snitzel – himself a four-time, consecutive Champion Sire in Australia and Leading Sire of 2YOs in Australia on three occasions, has sired more than 120 world-wide stakes winners. Hailing from a wonderful female line, Real Gone Kid is a son of Equus Champion, and G1 Cape Fillies Guineas and G1 Woolavington 2000 heroine, In The Fast Lane - a daughter of seven times South African champion sire Jet Master. In what is seen as a very exciting opportunity, any breeder who sends a mare will incur no covering cost. If a breeder commits to sending a mare every year for four years they will receive a share of the horse which will entitle them to a further free service every year, plus any dividends that the stallion may earn thereafter. An understandably delighted Craig Carey is quoted, “Without a doubt Real Gone Kid has an international standard pedigree that wouldn’t be out of place in any stallion barn around the world. Access to a bloodline of this strength and quality is very exciting – Ridgemont Highlands are committing to send Real Gone Kid a minimum of twenty mares every year, for four years.” 47

BRITISH RACING’S CROP RULES CHANGE Britain's jockeys will have to make fundamental changes to the way they use the whip within a matter of months following the unexpected news that a review group has decided to ask for a ban on whip use in the forehand position. The Racing Post reports that this is one of 20 recommendations by the Whip Consultation Steering Group, set up last year, which were published on

Tuesday, having already been approved by the BHA's board. As was suggested by a leak last week, disqualification is to be introduced as the ultimate sanction in cases of extreme breaches of the whip rules, although officials would be delighted if they never have to use that power. It will be available for all races, not just high-profile ones, as was mooted by the leak. An innovation is the creation of a whip review panel which will take most of the responsibility for enforcement action from

48

raceday stewards. Penalties for breaches are to be increased and will be especially stiff in major races, at double the level set for standard races. Totting-up bans will be triggered by three breaches in a six-month period, rather than five as at present. The aim is for the recommendations to be incorporated into racing's rules by late autumn but David Jones, a BHA director who chaired the group, was

careful to avoid being tied down to a specific date as he addressed a press conference. A detailed implementation plan is to be developed, making time for training of jockeys and stewards and allowing for a bedding-in period before the new rules will be applied in earnest. Jones believes there is nothing to be gained by rushing and

more time will be allowed for that process if necessary. While the changes are more significant than many in racing will have anticipated, the steering group's hope is that they will take the heat out of the issue for many years and satisfy most of the sport's critics that it is serious about its responsibilities to the horse. "It's really key for us to show that we really want to make a difference and this is a serious

49

issue," Jones said. "It was right at the heart of what we wanted to do, to show that we were not just tinkering." Please read more here

BOOST FOR STATES Moutonshoek’s beautifully bred resident sire The United States got a handsome boost to his pedigree on Sunday when his close relative Tenebrism captured the Gr1 Haras D’Etreham Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly. Winner of last year’s Gr1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes, the Aidan O’Brien trained three-year-old had a length and a quarter in hand on the runner-up with a further short-neck back to

the third-place finisher.Ridden by Ryan Moore, Tenebrism travelled in mid-division for most of the race before being asked for her effort just outside the two-furlong marker. She took control in the final 100 yards and kicked clear to achieve a comfortable success.

a pleasure to ride. She was very comfortable over seven furlongs today.”

Winning jockey Ryan Moore said of Tenebrism:

A half-sister to unbeaten Gr2 Airlie Stud Stakes winner Statuette, Tenebrism has now won three of just five starts.

“She’s always shown plenty. She was still a bit green and struggled around the bend but finished well. Today, it was nice to come to a level track on nice ground. She’s

Remarkably, Tenebrism provided her trainer Aidan O’Brien with his first win in the Prix Jean Prat.

TOP JOCKEYS FOR SHERGAR CUP The 2022 Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup is set to feature some of the leading jockeys from around the world as a starstudded line up has been assembled for the unique team competition.

Italian star Frankie Dettori, the winning-most active Royal Ascot jockey, will captain the European team, four time winners of the competition. Dettori will be making his 11th appearance in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and first since 2016.

No fewer than ten nations will be represented across the four teams for the 21st renewal of the event at Ascot with riders from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Britain and Ireland competing for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup.

Frankie Dettori said: “It’s been a few years since I’ve ridden in the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup and I’m looking forward to it. I love Ascot and it’s always a great day so I hope people put it in their diary and come along to have a good time and enjoy something a bit different. “The European team looks really

51

strong. I remember when we won it in 2014 it was a really special day and hopefully we can lift the trophy again this year.” He will be joined by compatriot Antonio Fresu as well as last year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Rene Piechulek from Germany and nine-times champion Spanish jockey Jose-Luis Martinez. The Great Britain and Ireland team will be captained by Jamie Spencer, who is one of just a handful of jockeys

to have ridden more than 2,000 winners, including 26 at Royal Ascot. He will have Danny Tudhope, who enjoyed an excellent Royal Ascot this year with four winners, Neil Callan and Kieran Shoemark alongside him. The Ladies team, victorious last year for the third time, will once again be captained by Hayley Turner and she will be joined by last year’s Alistair Haggis Silver Saddle winner Nicola Currie and multiple Royal Ascot winner Hollie Doyle. The side is completed by Canadian star Emma-Jayne Wilson, who has appeared at the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup

six times, including when on the winning side in 2015. Hayley Turner said: “I love the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, it’s always one of my favourite days of the year. It’s great for the event to have lots of international riders travelling over for the day again and I’m excited to have EmmaJayne back again on our team. “Winning last year for the third time was really special as they let me keep the trophy which I’ve now got at home. The Ladies look strong again with Hollie and Nicola so hopefully we can retain the crown and win the new trophy as well.” The Rest of the World team features two of Japan’s leading

52

riders at the moment in Takeshi Yokoyama and French-born Christophe Lemaire who represents Japan as a JRA licensed jockey. They are joined by three-time Melbourne Cup winner Kerrin McEvoy from Australia and New Zealander Jason Collett, who has enjoyed a superb season in Sydney. Please read more here –see the teams.

54 Alcohol Free charges home under Rob Hornby

Newmarket Racecourse

55

The highlight of Newmarket’s July Meeting was the Darley July Cup run over six furlongs on Saturday afternoon. Alcohol Free ran out an easy winner by a length and a half from Naval Crown. In the process, the fouryear-old filly secured her fourth Group One victory. Versatile would be a good description of this daughter of No Nay Never who has won at the top level from six furlongs to a mile on good to firm and heavy ground. Unfancied at 14/1 after running mid-field nearly three-lengths behind Naval Crown at Royal Ascot in the Platinum Jubilee, she reversed the form with something to spare. Her owner Jeff Smith suggested that she be entered in this Group 1 sprint and his judgement proved spot on. Naval Crown set off to make the running and Alcohol Free, settled just behind him by Rob Hornby, looked much more comfortable than she had three weeks earlier. Naval Crown had no

answer when Hornby sent her to the front just over a furlong out, finishing second with Artorius, third at Ascot, staying on from off the pace to take the same spot here. Anna Lisa Balding, the trainer’s wife, said: “Jeff has always said six furlongs is the right trip, so he deserves a lot of credit.” “She’s such a lovely filly, quirky but we all love her. She very rarely disappoints, and she’s got a huge heart.” Winning jockey Rob Hornby, unlucky to be “jocked off” Westover in the Irish Derby a fortnight ago, gained compensation with dual Gr1 victories at the festival. Friday’s Falmouth Stakes success on another filly, Prosperous Voyage, preceding Alcohol Free. “Two Group Ones in two days, who’d have thought it?”, Hornby said. “It’s been a crazy year but I’m in a very privileged position to ride top-class horses. “The thinking is that in this race, her stamina would kick in up the hill, she’d see it out really well and that’s what happened. The ground started to get quick, but it just goes to show her guts and bravery and how tough she is.” Alcohol Free is now expected to

56

step back up to a mile in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood later this month, a race she won 12 months ago, with the top-class colts Baaeed and Coroebus her likely opponents. Brian Meehan’s Manton stable fielded the winner of the Gr2 Superlative Stakes earlier on the card. Isaac Shelby, a Night of Thunder colt, may have Classic potential according to his trainer after narrowly denying the Godolphin hotpot Victory Dance by a head with the balance fourlengths behind. Meehan stated post-race: “He’s the business, I think, he’s really special, he could even be a Guineas horse.” “This is high-end stuff here and he’s really proved himself. You take it stepby-step but he’s a horse that’s going to continue to improve, physically there’s still massive improvement there.” “Goodwood would be too soon but Doncaster [for the Champagne Stakes in early September] is definitely a race I’ve thought of.”

Slowly but surely, we are creeping closer to the start of the domestic season – and I am getting more and more excited by the day! Teams are starting to explore and experiment their systems within contests and questions are beginning to be answered. Take a look at some of the pre-season fixtures we have selected for your perusal – let’s ensure we continue building up those coffers for early August, writes Ryan Liberty. Friday 15 July Melbourne Victory vs Manchester United (12:05) United were horrid at the end of last season and I think this pre-season run of fixtures will be used as a yardstick against the upcoming ideas and philosophy. Erik ten Hag is clear on what he expects, and I think should his side move closer to achieving that, they win this one. United have a better squad with exceptional players – their opposition has struggled already, and I can’t in good faith suggest the Australians win. Liverpool vs Crystal Palace (14:35)

pre-season brawl sort of football fixture against Millwall, running out 5-4 victors. Liverpool may have lost Sadio Mane this year, but their attacking threats are as dangerous as ever. I can’t see the Reds not scoring plenty and so Liverpool to win and over 3.5 goals seem to be the right one. Ajax vs AS Eupen (15:30) Ajax have largely been the topic of recent conversation due to their links with Manchester United and the interest in their players… but lest we forget that this is a serious football club with a clear philosophy and culture. The more things change amongst their ranks, the more it stays the same! They are a stronger side than their opponents and after their strong start to life after Erik – I think they win this. Besiktas vs Mainz (18:00) Not the easiest game to call in honesty, I think these sides are often held in the same regard on paper, but I think Mainz should be the focus here. They will likely want to have a go here and attack Besiktas with direct intent. From a Besiktas point of view, they have scored in every game since early April and so surely both teams scoring becomes a banker? Get on! Saturday 16 July

Palace enjoyed a usual

60

PSV vs Villarreal (00:00) PSV have had a nightmare start to their early preparations. They’ve yet to win a game and given the fact that they have conceded six goals in just two games, alarm bells are surely ringing! Villarreal will get their preparation underway on Saturday and given the high they managed to finish last season on – I suspect they come in brimming with confidence. As a point of safety, back over 3.5 goals in this one. Tottenham vs Sevilla (13:00) Neither side has kicked a football since the conclusion of their respective leagues concluded, and so this could be quite a balanced affair. I thought Sevilla enjoyed a positive end to an inconsistent season whilst Spurs settled in nicely under their fiery Italian boss. The energy and environment around Tottenham now seems impenetrable and absolutely together – it’s for that reason alone I’m getting behind here (and as a quietly confident early call, expecting them to compete for silverware in their domestic season).

Cologne vs AC Milan (19:00) AC Milan – unlike Manchester United – have managed to secure the services of their talisman for the upcoming season and avoid any unnecessary distractions around their pre-season work. They have a superior side and I expect them to hit the proverbial ground running – back them! Inter Milan vs Monaco (20:30) Inter have welcomed the return of their ‘prodigal son’ and I think they are not only happier for it but also exponentially more lethal.

Nevertheless, the Italian side are now just beginning their early preparation and against a spirited Monaco side I wonder how they will fare early on… Monaco have put a game under the belt already, winning 2-0 against Portimonense and so with a bit of confidence, I think they could get a positive result here. I’m on the Monaco Win/Draw Double Chance. now without any real heavy machinery upfront, I can’t see past an Arsenal win. Chelsea vs America (04:00) The work Chelsea have looked to do in the window has made sense and I think fans of the London club have reason to be pleased – well except maybe about their home jersey for the season…but that’s a topic for another day. Thomas Tuchel will no doubt use this opportunity to ensure his side is as prepared as possible for the upcoming season – and so I can’t go against the Blues here.
