In contrast to the male 3yo ranks, where outstanding colt Cousin Casey towers over his contemporaries after last season, none of the fairer sex dazzled quite as brightly and the division looks far more open. That was clearly underlined by the result of the Gr2 Golden Slipper on July day, where a number of highlyregarded fillies failed to cut the mustard, most notably the unbeaten duo of Sweet Pepper and Maharanee.

Candiese Lenferna

The daughter of Oratorio already had the Listed Devon Air Stakes to her name and won by the proverbial whisker from low flying Rafeef filly Rock The Fox, with many pundits convinced Sean Tarry's charge had got up on the line. In a blanket finish, with no more than a half-length covering the first four across the line, the Paul Peter-trained Bless My Stars was a neck further back in third and she had a similar margin to spare over Hold My Hand, a Drakensteinbred daughter of Gold BoastingStandard.an enviable record of three wins and two seconds from as many starts, Canadian Summer will in all probability be crowned Champion Juvenile

the Gr2 SA Fillies Nursery amongst her perfect four-win streak. Alas, both lost their unbeaten records, victory instead going to Glen Kotzen's Strelitzia Stakes winner Ameena, while Sweet Pepper finished ninth in a field of 12, with favourite Maharanee next Whilebest. Sweet Pepper and Maharanee were licking their wounds so to speak and Amanee declared a non-runner, the Gr1 Thekwini Stakes on Gold Cup day also threw up somewhat of a surprise winner in Canadian Summer, who provided local trainer Daryl Moore, owner Preggie Somasundram and jockey Jason Gates with their respective very first Gr1 successes.

Gr1 Thekwini Stakes joy for Canadian Summer and connections

Paul Peter is extremely excited about his crop of Classic fillies, which outnumber his colts dramatically and are 'top Asclass'.far as he is concerned, a line can be drawn through Maharanee's Golden Slipper "Itflop.was her first run at Hollywoodbets Greyville, she overraced from her wide draw and became difficult," he told Sporting Post. "She will stay a mile and is a Classic filly."

7 filly. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see how this quartet progresses as the season gathers

Another unexposed filly Peter rates as one of his Classic prospects is Mrs Browning and for obvious reasons - she is an own sister to Gr1 SA Derby winner Aragosta! The once-raced daughter of Rafeef fully justified her cramped odds with an eye-catching debut win at Turffontein.

Peter races Mrs Browning in partnership with the Wernars, owners of the smart Querari filly Gobsmacked. This halfsister to Gr1 winner Mighty High took her flawless record to three from three in the Gr2 Debutante at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

Another who has raced under the radar, but is worth keeping an eye on, is Alec Laird's Rockets Red Glare. This daughter of The United States made a mockery of her 66-1 starting price with a jaw-dropping debut win at Turffontein, romping home by eight lengths. Last week we mentioned

Peter is also bullish about Thekwini third Bless My Stars, remarking: "She is top class and is right up there."

The same applied to his Ruffian Stakes winner River Queraress, who met her match against the boys in the Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes after finishing third in the Gr1 Allan Robertson. "Please don't ignore her," he remarked. "She was inexperienced, was interfered with and is much better than that."

In addition to Ameena, Glen Kotzen could have another exciting prospect in Bonika. A half-sister to smart Port Elizabeth stakes winner Whatever Next, she snatched victory in the Listed Irridescence Stakes over 1500m and, being by Cape Derby winner Jackson, will no doubt relish further.

May all those mentioned above - and any as yet unknowns waiting in the wings - grow in physical and psychological strength in the coming months!

Chere For Me easily landed both the East Cape Fillies Nursery and Lady's Slipper Stakes, while the former left her male rivals trailing in the Dahlia Plate and finished a creditable fourth in the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship at Hollywoodbets Scottsville. That completes the overview of what could be some of the main players in the three-year-old division.

It is no secret that the KZN trainers simply do not have the same firepower as their Cape and Gauteng counterparts, so it was rather refreshing to see Mike Miller's Woodland Retreat finish second in both the Gr2 Golden Slipper and Devon Air Stakes. By Pomodoro out of a Silvano mare, she may well continue to make some noise this season.

As regards the Eastern Cape, on exposed form Ekoria and Chere For Me must rate as the region's leading young fillies.

As Romi says, with all the recent good news announcements for racing, there is plenty of expectation amongst vendors and buyers ahead of the BSA August Two Year Old Sale, which will be held at the TBA sales complex in Germiston on Friday 26 August and Saturday 27 August.

The Western Cape has led the field in the past month with a host of positive news that is likely to have lifted the general appetite for existing and new owners.

All jockeys experience injuries – it’s in the nature of life in the saddle. I personally have battled to come to terms with my careerending experience. Managing the Hollywood Syndicate provides me with so much pleasure and pride, and goes a long way to filling the void, as I’m intimately involved in this great game,” added Anthony Delpech, who also recalled those days of the early ‘80’s.

Anthony Delpech’s life changed forever on 7 April 2018 when he was badly injured, coming off Majestic Mambo during the SA Classic at Turffontein.

Another multiple national champion, Anthony Delpech pointed out on Friday evening that racing is ‘near impossible to walk away from.’

Emotions ran high at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Friday evening. Fivetimes SA champion jockey Mark Khan booted home a winner for his former SA Jockey Academy buddy Anthony Delpech. It was a sentimental crossing of their path, some 38 years after they trained as young Anapprentices.energetic soon-to-be 54 year old on 30 September, Mark Khan boasts the athleticism and well-being of a man half his age and rode a typically balanced and powerful finish to win the second race on Phaka Imali on the Global Team Horseracing evening, for the Hollywood Syndicate. “It’s interesting how life takes us on different paths. When we were teenagers, we were firm friends – we still are. We had stars in our eyes and great plans and ambitions. Who thought that life would have taken both us all over the world, and here I am riding a winner for one of the country’s leading owner syndicates, managed by Anthony Delpech? What a rare pleasure that winner gave me!” Mark told the Sporting Post on Sunday as he said he was blessed to have been given the opportunity to enjoy a fantastic career amongst wonderful people and great horses.

STILL ON THE MARK!

“Mark has had his injury challenges. He is a real soldier. In my case it was no coming back after my accident in 2018. I relate to Mark and admire his tenacity,” added the Hollywood Syndicate boss. And that is certainly the Markcase. Khan announced his Mark is led in on Phaka Imali by Anthony Delpech and his daughter, Brooklyn

“Stanley Amos, Karl Neisius and Garth Puller all went to a good age of varying degrees. Look, there is no question there is a new generation of young rider – and there are some really top youngsters. But it’s a cycle – we were there once – we thought it would never end. It’s their turn today –tomorrow there is a another emerging generation coming through. It’s much like any sport – rugby , cricket, soccer. We all get our turn. I am just enjoying my racing and honoured to be a part of it all still. My son is in grade 11 and varsity beckons. So we work and soldier on,” he laughs.

The Khans are resident in the River Club in Sandton. Quizzed on racing’s future, Mark says that he believes there are exciting prospects on the horizon, and that things are moving forward.

“I feel we shouldn’t be so quick to criticize or be negative. Take the Global Team Horseracing concept. It’s a lovely buzz and atmosphere on-course, and while there are aspects of it that probably need tweaking, and it’s very fast - despite the fact that we only ride in alternate races - there is a concerted effort to do something on the lines of the T20 concept and make it exciting for a wider audience. And there is no question that horseracing needs to broaden its appeal. Let’s give initiatives like this our support rather than hanging on its tail,” he suggests.

21 GR2MUSCUTT’SCRACKER! Racing TV

The ultra-consistent son of Sea The Stars has progressed rapidly through the ranks this season and following silver medals at Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood, added this Group Two prize to the Bahrain Trophy he landed at Newmarket’s July Festival earlier in the campaign. Unable to run in the St Leger due to the fact he is a gelding, a trip to Australia for the Melbourne Cup could be an option for the winner.

The winner, the new Melbourne Cup favourite, was ridden by Newmarketbased rider Daniel Muscutt who recently became Hollywoodbets’ first Northern sponsoredHemispherejockeyand Brand Ambassador. The Zimbabwe-born Muscutt ‘s father Peter is a trainer at Summerveld. It was stablemate and eventual third El Bodegon who looked likely to claim the spoils, hitting the front two furlongs out in the hands of Hollie Doyle, but Daniel Muscutt was tracking nicely and it was simply a case of when and not if for the talented gelding.

Deauville Legend led home a one-three for trainer James Ferguson in the Gr2 Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes at York on Wednesday.

“Credit to both horses, they’ve both run fantastic races and I’m delighted for both sets of owners. They should both have successful careers Down Under.

The BSA August 2yo Sale, scheduled for the TBA Sales Complex in Germiston on Friday and Saturday, will be held without the eighteen strong Maine Chance Farms draft. One of South Africa’s longstanding quality nurseries, Maine Chance is a popular vendor and the loss of their quality draft will be a disappointment to many.

SALE: PRECAUTIONARYCHANCEMAINEMOVE

Maine Chance – place of beauty!

“The decision to withdraw our draft is a precautionary move in the best interests of our horses and that of our fellow participating vendors. In our pre-travel prep last week, we detected what appears to be a mild virus being incubated by a couple of the youngsters. Rather than take a risk, we have decided to pull the whole draft off the sale. It just wouldn’t be fair to the horses, and we’d rather take no chances. It’s a massive disappointment for the team who have put in a lot of hard work. But the decision is supported by Dr Andreas Jacobs, and our horses always take top priority,” Stud Manager Tim Bootsma told the Sporting HePost.added that the draft would move to the unbroken 2yo’s section of the CTS Ready To Run Sale to be held at Kenilworth on 29 October.

THE INSHOW’‘TALKWOWSTHEWET Berthwell Arosi shows off Talk Of The Town - an athletic good-looker!

Chase Liebenberg

• To enquire about Talk Of The Town’s fee and to book a mare to this impressive young sire, please email Pippa at stud@avontuurestate. co.za.

Town is out of the unraced Street Cry mare Street Wise, whose granddam is the outstanding Nijinsky II mare Dancing Show. The latter is granddam of the great Redoute’s “AndChoice.remember what they said about Northern Guest before he made his mark!” added the horsewoman with the midas touch, as Berthwell Arosi, the man who looked after Divine King, Dominion Royale, Oratorio and VAR, proudly showed his charge off. After his champion sire’s passing earlier this year, the R3 million yearling Talk Of The Town looks the perfect successor to Dad’s hallowed throne. Now in his third season at stud, Talk Of The Town has already stamped his offspring with his exceptional demeanour and athletic good looks. His sire VAR left us earlier this year and is a legend on SA racetracks. He was a Leading Sire of 2YO’s in 2016-17 and 2017-18, and Champion Sire of Winners in 2018The19. sire of 10 Gr1 winners, including the referenced 2012 Equus Horse of the Year Variety Club, and Champion Sprinters Val de Ra and Via Afrika amongst many other well-known names in South African racing, VAR is the sire of over 100 black type horses with his progeny earning more than R150 million. He has also stamped himself as a broodmare sire of some Theproportions.consensus amongst the audience was that Talk Of The Town has to be given an opportunity to show in the stallion barn what he was denied in a premature end to his track career.

80 Climate change aside, August in the Cape is inevitably wet. And Mother Nature played a consistent ball again as over 200 invited guests gathered with brollies and boots to welcome the magnificent chestnut Talk Of The Town to Avontuur last Thursday. Racing and breeding’s movers and shakers turned up in numbers on a day when many must have been tempted to keep the slippers on and stay put. It was cold and wet! “I remember 17 odd years ago when we gathered to welcome this very impressive specimen’s Dad, VAR. The weather was exactly the same as it is today. They say the rain is a blessing. He is a helluva nice horse,” quipped leading owner and breeder Marsh Shirtliff as the rain fell gently on the immaculately manicured lawns of the Manor House, with longstanding Avontuur GM Pippa introducingMickleburghhernewman to a keen audience. An injury forced the end of the handsome Talk Of The Town’s racing career. He raced just five times for three straight victories. “Those closest to him said he was as good as Variety Club – and we all know what he did,” added Pippa of the former SA Horse Of The Year as she pointed out the 10 sires and 8 Gr1 winners in the first 3 generations of Talk Of The Town’s Talkpedigree.OfThe

“The blood is there in all its glory. Look at the specimen. He was doing it on the racetrack. He ticks the boxes. He has to be worth a chance to prove himself,” said a veteran.

Once asked to win his race, the William Haggas trained four-yearold quickened decisively and put 6 and a half-lengths between himself and second placed Mishriff at the line. He returned a 2-5 favourite to great applause from the crowd and emulated his sire Sea The Stars and fellow great Frankel with victory in this prestigious race. He is now rated the third highest horse by Timeform this century behind Frankel and Sea The Stars.

94 it should be said that is the case despite Leicester’s performances. Brendan Rodgers confirmed that Wesley Fofana was not in the right state of mind amid talks with Chelsea – and so the defender was resigned to the stands for the game. His absence was surely missed though, the Foxes failed to deal with balls being played into those half-spaces asking for an aerial dual between striker and defender. The defeat increased pressure on Rodgers, he’s seen his side lose five points from winning positions already this season…funny enough the last time they did this they were crowned champions by the end of the season! I must say Leicester are frustrating to get behind in the betting markets…they blow hot and cold. They look really menacing for large parts of the game only to come up short and often lack that killer instinct when they are able to claim all three Rodgerspoints.isa quality football coach; one I would be patient with and back handsomely in the market. My only point of confusion is where a player doesn’t want to be at the club and yet the management want to hang on…I say cash in and invest elsewhere. Proud English clubs collide in the Capital on Saturday afternoon. Neither necessarily enjoying their start to the domestic season after rocky starts – but that won’t deter the fight and relatively new rivalry that has become apparent in this fixture. It should be another fiery installment and I’m certainly here for it!

To Win (90 mins) Chelsea 4/10 Draw Leicester4/1 13/2 Chelsea Chelsea, who have spent more than 170 million quid on players during the summer window, were the architects of their own demise against a spirited Leeds side on Sunday. Edouard practicallyuncharacteristicallyMendygaveLeeds the lead early on, miscontrolling a fairly straightforward back pass. Raheem Sterling who has looked lively this season so far was the cause for a Leeds free kick on the edge of the box which gave Rodrigo his fourth goal for the Chelseaseason.obviously then went on to concede a third and lost the game 3-0 – but for me the disappointment of the day was the lack of fight evident from an already proven, fighting manager! Kalidou Koulibaly was sent off close to full-time, arguably showing his naivety for life in the Premier League. Chelsea was crestfallen, second-best at 50-50 situations and just couldn’t match the intensity that Leeds looked to employ at Elland Road. Thomas Tuchel suggesting they were the better side in many media publications is laughable –only to the extent that a manager of his caliber could not surely be serious? His side were outplayed and reduced to cowardice against the backdrop of a difficult Tuchelsituation.might be wondering whether his side require more signings to fix the complications on display from Sunday. This is a narrative I’ve found to gain more traction in the aftermath of the game…but admittedly its likely a little premature. The fact does remain though – against Spurs the battle and fighting character has been credited with them earning a league point…a week later a lack of fight and character led to their Anyway, embarrassment.whoam I? Surely this is just a bad day at the office? Blue could still be the colour and football the game this weekend! Leicester James Maddison has been flying so far this season, and yet in truth

Leicester: Ward; Castagne, Evans, Amartey, Justin; Drewsbury-Hall, Ndidi, Maddison; Perez, Vardy, Barnes. Prediction: Chelsea and Both Teams To Score

95 the killer-instinct required at this level, I still cannot get behind them to claim all three points. I think they score, but Chelsea wins here and likely with a

I(2/1)think defensively Chelsea might be a little vulnerable this weekend. Leicester could be given a couple chances in that regard but without

Chelsea is probably the better side, but I think the confidence to back them here is largely rooted in the fact that Leicester can’t seem to buy a victory lately.

Predicted Line-up: Chelsea: Mendy; Cucurella, Silva, James; Chillwell, Jorginho, Gallagher, LoftusCheek; Mount, Havertz, Sterling.
