I entered at the very last minute after a colleague encouraged me to, and to win back-to-back is certainly very special and I have many people to thank for it,” said Candiese, who adds with genuine enthusiasm that Warren deserves his acknowledgement. “I think more so than mine! I am absolutely over the moon for my husband - he is so passionate about what he does, we both eat, sleep, and breathe our work and he deserves this prestigious accolade. He has a superb talent for his TV work, nothing flusters him at all, and he just has a natural ability for questions and speaking off the cuff, which he makes look so easy – trust me, it’s not!”

While the committeeEquusdelivered a polished show with public voting a la Cartier Racing Awards style introduced for the first time this year, they did trainer Justin Snaith and jockey Richard Fourie ‘a disservice’, in the words of a leading racing personality, by failing to acknowledge their Gr1 winning achievements. This is the opinion of veteran racing man John Freeman, who told the Sporting Post that this observation was in no way intended to detract from the extraordinary achievements of newly crowned champion trainer Paul Peter and jockey Warren “PaulKennedy.Peter and Warren Kennedy are deserving recipients of the championship titles, and nobody is arguing that. But given the fact that Justin Snaith saddled 9 Gr1 winners over the season, and Richard Fourie lifted 9 Gr1 trophies, surely a mention or accolade at the awards would have been appropriate? There was talk that Fourie had targetted Jeff Llloyd’s season tally of 7 Gr1’s, but informed SP readers, including now Aussie-based former Durban jockey and Weichong’s former ‘kit boy’ Chris Taylor, pointed out Weichong Marwing’s extraordinary 1998/99 season where he won 13 Gr1’s.
In a chat with the Sporting Post on Sunday, Weichong, who now trains out of Turffontein, recalled that the pre-millenium period was a halcyon season, where stallion Fort Wood played a major part.

“I haven’t got big-spending owners, but I feel we bought well and it’s a game that takes great patience. I have the work ethic and have learnt from the best –so I have no excuses,” he laughed.
That 3yo season of the great Horse Chestnut included Weichong riding 9 of his Gr1 victories for Mike de Kock. While the SA season runs from 1 August to 31 July, Chris Taylor also points out that the De Kock/ Marwing combination achieved 12 Gr1 wins in the space of 12 months from the 1998 Gold Challenge to the 99 SA Derby.
In a market loaded with positivity and hungry for the return of horseracing’s halcyon days, the curtain came down on the 2022 BSA August 2yo Sale at the TBA Sales Complex in Johannesburg on Saturday with the numbers speaking volumes, as all stats are up year-on-year. WINTER IN CLIFTON – AT THE PRICE, LIFE'S A BEACH!
All things happen for a reason. Following the untimely loss of resident stallion Mambo In Seattle in June, Clifton Stud has found a more than worthy replacement in Last Winter, who arrived at his new home in early August.
The last well-performed son of former Lammerskraal lynchpin Western Winter to take up stallion duties, Last Winter relocated from Bush Hill Stud, where he had stood his first two seasons. His first foals are now yearlings. 'It all happened very quickly and I'm thrilled to stand a high quality son of Western Winter," remarked Clifton Stud master Peter Blythe. However, with no runners yet to show his powers and his racing career now a fading memory, the third season at stud is a dreaded one for any stallion and Peter wryly admits it's not going to be easy to get his new recruit a decent number of mares. Lest we forget, KZN has experienced a dwindling mare population in recent years, exacerbated by the loss of big guns Summerhill and the Scotts' Highdown Stud. In addition, breeders invariably succumb to the allure of 'new stallions', so Last Winter also faces stiff competition from the likes of newcomers Got The Greenlight and Declaration Of "BothWar.will probably take about 200 mares out of a limited pool of mares,"

Sadly, an international campaign proved to be litany of bad luck and niggling injuries and after placing fourth once in just two UK starts, both in Listed company, he returned to South Africa. That Last Winter wasn't snapped up by one of the leading Cape studs came as somewhat of a surprise. After all, here was a Gr1-performed horse, a smashing looker who had sold for R3.7million as a yearling, sired by a powerhouse stallion out of a Gr1 winning daughter of Silvano, from the direct family of breed-shaping stallion Bold Ruler. One can only speculate. "I am really excited about him" is how respected bloodstock consultant John Freeman expressed his admiration of Gold Standard, the latest addition to the portfolio of stallions he manages. The accomplished son of champion Trippi stands alongside his sire at Drakenstein and so impressed Freeman at the stud's recent stallion show, that he offered to manage the young stallion's career. No wonder Freeman was captivated by Gold Standard's physique, he commanded a R750 000 price tag as a yearling. In addition to his good looks, he boasts a splendid female line, being out of Olympic Dam, a daughter of Horse of the Year and crack sire Model Man and the champion racemare Olympic Duel, whilst his third dam is Broodmare of the Year Mashka. On the racetrack, Gold Standard certainly lived up to his fine Trainedpedigree.by Glen Kotzen, the bay put together a smashing hat-trick over a mile at three, culminating in a career-best victory in the Gr2 Selangor Cup at the expense of subsequent Cape Derby and Daily News 2000 winner Edict Of Nantes. He added: "Gold Standard's progeny are nice scopey horses, and their quality is very much in the mould of his famous sire Trippi. He is very fertile, covers well and he is a very happy horse." And with his impeccable hind leg he will help fix that Sadlers Wells fault,” enthused the veteran bloodstock man. Due to his advanced age, 25-year-old Trippi will understandably be available to shareholders only this season, which makes Gold Standard an attractive alternative. A OPPORTUNITYNORDIC Erupt's son Beerenberg - seen as a yearling
Achieving (if this word could be used) R305k for five yearlings, with another four not sold, was Amongstdire. the four not sold was an Erupt colt that we thought had promise. Not the biggest, but there was plenty of him, he moved well, and he was out of a halfsister to the dam of Rio Querari. Except that Rio hadn’t yet won the Computaform Sprint. There wasn’t a bid for him. In fairness, the temperature in the auction venue was unbearably hot, the mood in the industry at the time was somewhat frosty, and Erupt was not exactly volcanic. However, we had a plan. This colt, subsequently named Beerenberg, qualified for the BSA Juvenile bonus, as well as the Cape Yearling Sale Cup. We’d put him into training, and if things didn’t work out, we’d retire him early.
39
Looking at the stellar results from the August Two-Year-Old Sale, it’s hard to imagine that just 18 months ago our draft of 10 yearlings consigned to the Cape Yearling Sale realized R505 000. Of that total, R200k was for
Erupt has 10 first crop winners, which is incredible for a horse that made his debut over 2200m halfway through his three-yearold season, and who then won two Grade Ones over 2400m. Admittedly, his sire, Dubawi breeds Grade One winners over all distances, as do his sons. One could say that Dubawi lays claims to being the hottest sire of sires in Europe at the moment. There’s a chance that Beerenberg could be a sprinter (after all, his dam is a half-sister to the dam of Rio Querari), but he is a similar type to his sire, so one can’t rule out the possibility of him getting a little further.
Our plan with Beerenberg didn’t work out quite as expected. He never ran in the sales race. He missed out on collecting the bonus for his juvenile win. However, we’ve proven that we have a racehorse.
The family isn’t just about Rio, though. Beerenberg’s dam is half-sister to two mares who each produced 10-time winners. Nordic Rebel is still in training at nine, having won his 10th race at the age of eight. Similarly, Cheers won 10 races, with the final coming at the age of 10. It’s an amazing family, a source of both Grade One excellence and longevity. As much as we’d love to race him ourselves, we’re a commercial operation. Putting Beerenberg into training after our failed attempt at selling him in February 2021 was Plan B. So, he’s returning to the sales ring in September. Well, a virtual sales ring, in the form of the BSA Online
had a race on 23 January, mostly because we had to do something with him before the sales race. However, he was still woefully immature, showed zero interest in the running, and finished well back in the field. He came back to the racecourse late in February with an improved thirdplace finish, but he was so shin sore that we decided to geld him and give him time to Whilerecover.hisshins continued to be an issue, his first run as a gelding (on 8 June) was a much improved third, beaten just over a length. 17 days later he was a close second. Then he had a break of just six days to his next race, when he doddled in despite being very green in the running. It says a lot for his constitution that he had three runs in a little over three weeks, with the final two races coming just six days apart. In travelling to Fairview for his maiden win (sadly, a week too late to catch the final BSA Juvenile Bonus) he seems to demonstrate some of the laid-back attitude of his globe-trotting sire. He had seven weeks off, and then made his three-year-old debut, finishing a good second in dreadful conditions. He certainly would have needed that run.
WeSale.think he represents a great opportunity, as a promising young racehorse who is going to improve further with maturity and Withracing.his most recent second-place finish coming on 20 August, we’d be remiss in not pointing out that he could be entered for a race immediately after purchase, to take advantage of the improved prize money on offer in the Cape. Ed – the BSA September online sale is from 08h00 on 6 September to 12h00 on 7 September.

The plan didn’t start well. At his first grass gallop, he did an abrupt right turn, nearly putting his work rider – and himself – over the rail. The video is available on Beerenbergrequest.

A brief stint, courtesy of Gold Circle’s hospitality, in KwaZulu-Natal following the Flamingo Park closure saw Cliffie and his team again hit the long road to Gqeberha in early 2021, where he currently plies his trade. So,, after 42 years of blissful stability, two provincial moves in a short time were not exactly the tonic the Jagersfontein-born William George Clifton Miller needed in his life. While he has never found himself in the champion fold as he did in the Northern Cape, Cliffie has adapted his attitude and soldiers on with just 30 Onhorses.Friday he saddled Naval Spirit Greenlighttoheavenand to a glorious 1-12 in the R175 000 Nelson Mandela Bay Racing Poly Challenge Leg 1 at Fairview. “The big yards are getting bigger and steamrollering the smaller guys. It’s not good for the racing ecosystem – it makes for boring racing too as competition is at the core of this sport. I’m thus really grateful to Basie and Suzette for their support.”
“I must thank Basie (Viljoen). He called me and said let’s run him, despite him being out at the weights. You see, we trainers maybe overthink the science and maths of it, sometimes,” he laughs.

This puts us in the series with a chance to do really well as 1200m is their minimum trip – so the 1400m and mile mean that we are in a more comfortable zone. We are going to do be doing our best believe me, and I’m so thankful to my owners for the support.”
Cliffie has trained winners in every centre, bar the Cape where he has not had a runner. He suggests the spread of owner support is key to racing’s prosperity.
Talking about a revival of Northern Cape Racing is Cliffie’s favourite subject. “There are a few guys looking at the options. I must hold on to the dream of getting back to the grand old days of sand racing.
Cliffie was in Kimberley a month ago. He says nothing has changed, bar the fact that the track is covered with vegetation. “It’s not sentimentality but I still have the house in Kimberley. Heather (Reddie, my partner) is there. It’s not ideal living this lifestyle, but we are making things work and I love my horses – they are the best reason to wake up every day. I must be close on my 1000 winner mark. One of the most significant innovations in the Global Team Horse Racing (GTH) Live Series has been the use of live trackers. These trackers provide “in running graphics” for the live broadcast and have additionally produced hotly anticipated sectional timings which can greatly benefit South African Horse Racing. Currently, the absence of historical data limits the amount of comparative information gained from the sectional times. However, over the course of the four GTH race meetings, significant new data will be generated. This new data will, in turn, further enable form students to gain an insight into how races are run on the HollywoodBets Greyville turf.

GTH has funded the cost of developing sectional timing in its entirety for the GTH series.
William Dien, Head of Department & Communication for McLloyd states, “Our track record in Horse racing is undisputed. We are heavily involved in France and are proud to expand our horizons and bring our technology to South Africa. Our GPS Tracking system will be used to capture racing data in real time and provide fans with digital representations of the data we track, in a bid to increase fan engagement.” McLloyd’s HPv2 trackers are the most accurate system on the market, with more than 30 indicators generated every 100 milliseconds for every single runner. The data collected is accessible in real time, with low latency, for a flawless transition to the supporters in the stands and in front of their screens. The fact that the system requires no antenna or wires means that the HPv2 system is also the most convenient in terms of Dienlogistics.adds:

The last time these two sides played, United were in a terrible position, and I suggested they would win – they lost. This time around they are in a bit of purple(ish) patch. I suppose I should suggest they lose and then they win? That’s how it works right? Anyway, I think this should be another show-stopping game of football. Two strong sides with incredible ability and depth. Let’s get in United Manchester United I will happily be the first to admit that it is not all fixed at Manchester United. I’m not necessarily talking about the Glazer family situation either, personally I’m not really on the bandwagon of blindly saying ‘Glazer out’ either – but that might be another article for another day, writes Ryan Liberty. Erik ten Hag has certainly been given quid to spend in the market after their horrible start. They’ve now brought in no less than five players the manager certainly believes can turn it around for the club, but also players who are starting to show their metal.
here! To Win (90 mins) Manchester
Arsenal What else is there to say about Arsenal anyway? They have been fantastic this season! Mikel Arteta has managed that side with absolute poise and conviction, even when the Arsenal support base and general football media questioned him. He got rid of a massively talented attacking player because he couldn’t fit into the culture the manager expected, he’s

66 unapologetically stuck to his idea on how football should be played and now that his side are reaping the rewards, they find themselves at the summit of the league with a brilliant start to the season. They have scored an average of 2.75 goals per game and yet only conceded an average of 0.3! They are insane statistics, and at the risk of sounding a little batty, I’ve got to ask the question…Are Arsenal Football Club dark horses to compete with City and Liverpool for the title this Andyear?what does that say about United should they win at Old Trafford!? Ok, ok that might have been a little banter just to lighten the mood – but in all seriousness, Arsenal for me have shown so far that they deserve your respect and I think the game on Sunday will show that.
Sunday 4
15/10 Draw Arsenal51/207/4
The Red Devils have an excellent chance at securing a second win at home when they welcome old friends from the London area. This will truly be the test in my opinion, United will need to start powerfully as they did against Liverpool and not give Arsenal a chance to catch their breath. It should be a real clash of styles as well. United under their new Dutch coach seem to want to hold onto the ball and protect possession all over the pitch – a slight adjustment to their previous approaches. I think it’s a real show of confidence and belief to see a side who are obviously under incredible pressure, stick to their principles and play the ball irrespective of the field positioning. There is a good feel about United now and should they come away with a positive result here…well, they might just kick on!

67 United canter to victory –this is my best bet for the game. At 33/10, surely you don’t need much more convincing. Prediction: Draw + BTTS (33/10) Yes, yes say it – I’m sitting on the fence! Well contrary to popular belief, I can’t honestly see how this doesn’t end in a draw, assuming both teams play to a particular standard. United surely come out with the same fire and brimstone at Old Trafford that was so evident against Liverpool, and Arsenal maintain excellenttheir approach. I think it ends all square – and while I once again wouldn’t mind calling this wrong and seeing
