BYE BYE BAAEED!
With connections expressing their relief that Baaeed missed a rainsoaked Longchamp in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, the stage is set for the four-year-old Shadwellowned colt to end his career in style in the feature £1.3 million event as the British Flat racing season draws to a grand finale on Saturday with Qipco British Champions Day at Ascot.
The highlight of the day is the Qipco Champion Stakes (17h00) run over 10-furlongs. Ten entries were declared for the Group 1, but all eyes will be drawn to the William Haggas trained champion Baaeed.
The four-year-old Shadwell-owned colt bids to extend his unbeaten run to 11 and provide Haggas with a sizeable chunk of prize-money towards the trainers’ title. Baaeed has already won twice at Ascot, namely the QEII 12 months ago and this year's Queen Anne Stakes and will be long odds-on for his final start before being retired to stud.
Four Group 1 contests are on offer and the prize-money available will decide the Flat trainers' title fight between Charlie Appleby and William Haggas. Their rivalry could be settled in the Qipco Champion Stakes, in which Baaeed will bid to end his stellar career on a high in Britain's richest Flat race.
Appleby will not go down without
a fight, however, and aims to send last year's Derby and King George hero Adayar out for his first toplevel start since finishing fifth in the race last year.
Inspiral, Emily Upjohn, Trueshan and Creative Force are just some of the star names likely to make an appearance on Saturday at the unmissable six-race meeting.
Shamrock reports that Race 1 on the card is the Gr2 Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup run over 2 miles at 14h25. The race revolves around the participation of star stayer Trueshan from the Alan King stable. 14 entries
were declared, and with the absence of Kyprios and retirement of Stradivarius, he looks the standout on official ratings. However, trainer King stated that more rain is needed to ensure Trueshan’s participation.
Doncaster Cup conqueror Coltrane and Quickthorn reoppose, whilst the potential presence of St Leger and Ebor heroes Eldar Eldarov and Trawlerman could add plenty to an intriguing opener. The first of the Group 1 events is carded to start at 15h00 with the running of the Qipco British Champion Sprint Stakes over 6 furlongs.
19 entries were declared including last year’s winner,
Creative Force for Charlie Appleby and Godolphin. Opposition include dual Wokingham winner Rohaan, who struck over course and distance last time out and fellow Godolphin-owned stablemate Naval Crown, the Platinum Jubilee hero in June. Commonwealth Cup scorer Perfect Power from the Richard Fahey yard attempts to follow up on his Royal Ascot success.
15h40 sees the running of the Qipco British Champions Fillies and Mares Stakes over a mile and a half. John Gosden’s Emily Upjohn looks to have a serious chance in this Group 1 contest with Frankie Dettori in the irons. The three-yearold flopped in the King George at this track when last seen, but the Musidora winner and Oaks runner-up has a strong chance of a breakthrough Group 1 success if bouncing back to her best form.
Eternal Pearl, who is chasing a five-timer, could step up in grade for her first Group 1 for Charlie Appleby and Will Buick.
The Gosden’s could saddle another filly to Ascot glory on Saturday with the Cheveley Park-owned Inspiral. The 3-year-old is favourite to land the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over the straight mile (16h20). 10 entries have been declared including Godolphin’s Modern Games and French raider The Revenant, victorious in this contest in 2020.

a proper
horse, and they can dream now for next year’
A phenomenal week for Frankel in the Newmarket sales ring was capped in style on the track as 12 years after the super sire won the Dewhurst, his chestnut son Chaldean repeated the feat under a battered and bruised Frankie Dettori.
Frankel, the jewel in the crown of bloodstock behemoth Juddmonte, was the highest-grossing stallion at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale across town, with his 25 lots returning receipts totalling 18,745,000gns over the three days, including the 2,800,000gns top lot.
The Racing Post reports that Chaldean was bred by Whitsbury Manor Stud and sold to Juddmonte for 550,000gns as a foal, but that is looking good business after wins in the Acomb Stakes, Champagne Stakes and now the Darleybacked Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes.
Having made the majority of the running, Chaldean showed a burst of speed his sire would have been proud of over two furlongs out, before holding on gamely to defeat runner-up Royal Scotsman by a head. For good measure Juddmonte also sent out Kingman colt Nostrum to finish third as they topped a phenomenal week on and off the track.
"He's a special horse by a special stallion," said Juddmonte racing manager Barry Mahon of the winner. "We're very lucky to have Frankel and Kingman. They're two phenomenal sires and testament to Prince Khalid's breeding for over 30 years that he's bred elite stallions like these two.
"Chaldean won't have any problem staying a mile, and neither will Nostrum. He'll be a better horse next year and we've got two lovely horses who will keep us dreaming through the winter."
Reflecting on Frankel's impact in the sales ring earlier in the week, Mahon added: "We've seen that every buyer of thoroughbreds around the world was keen to add a Frankel to their stable – that's how well he's done as a racehorse and a stallion."
Dettori managed his customary flying dismount after the race, but he was clearly suffering having taken a heavy fall earlier in the day when his mount Liftoff clipped heels with a rival in the Zetland Stakes.
"I'm pretty shook up, I must say," said Dettori. "I don't envy the jump jockeys, but luckily I'm in one piece. I've got a couple of knocks and a bit of a headache but there's nothing like a Group 1 to put you right, right?"
On the winner, he added: "When we shot clear I thought we had it in the bag, and I think Chaldean lost his concentration a bit as he was all on his own. I probably kicked a bit too early, but he's tough
and well-balanced.
"At the moment I'd say a mile is no problem. He's neat and compact and handled the Dip well. He's a proper Guineas horse, and they can dream now for next year."
Having landed the 2,000 Guineas with Kameko in 2020, winning trainer Andrew Balding was delighted to have another genuine contender for the Newmarket Classic on his hands, and agreed with Dettori and Mahon that the mile would be no issue come the spring.
"The nice thing is he's so relaxed," said Balding. "He should go on next year and certainly stay a mile, so we've got lots to look forward to.
"He's just a dream horse really. He doesn't have to make it and the bigger the field, probably the better off he'll be. He's all speed on his dam's side, so I'd be surprised if he gets further than a mile. We'll see how he's training in the spring, but I think I'd be comfortable going straight for the Guineas – I can't be making that decision at the moment, though."
His fourth victory of the year sent Chaldean towards the head of the betting for next season's 2,000
Guineas, with Paddy Power offering 8-1 (from 12) for the Newmarket Classic over a mile, with Little Big Bear the 5-1 favourite.
This is the first season Balding has trained for Juddmonte, and he revealed that Chaldean was the first into his famous Kingsclere yard of the horses which were sent to him.
"It's a huge privilege to train
for them, particularly when you get sent horses like him by the stallions they have access to, it's a dream," said the trainer.
"It's an amazing race to win and the most important two-year-old race of the year. My father [Ian] won it with Silly Season, Mill Reef and Dashing Blade, so I've got a bit of catching up to do!" Runner-up Royal Scotsman put a disappointing run in the Gimcrack behind him to confirm the promise he had shown earlier in the season for Paul and Oliver Cole, pushing
the winner all the way to the line to leave connections keen on a rematch in the Guineas.

‘Good horses never fail to set pulses racing. That much was evident at last weekend's Turffontein meeting, where a trio of smart winners spiced up the day's action’
Good horses never fail to set pulses racing. That much was evident at last weekend's Turffontein meeting, where a trio of smart winners spiced up the day's action.
In the 1000m third race, all eyes were on Mike de Kocktrained filly Iphiko, who has not looked back since cracking her maiden in late August and came into the race with a three-race win streak in tow.
Notwithstanding the fact that she was taking on male rivals, the Hollywood Syndicate-owned four-yearold started well in the red and once again, she put up a sterling effort.
On the lead virtually from the jump, she never saw
a rival and kept up her relentless gallop to win with the minimum of fuss. This sparkling all-theway victory, her fourth in a row, also confirmed that black type should be well within her scope, prompting De Kock to remark on Twitter: "Looks like we'll have to set our sights higher with Iphiko."
Remarkably, the filly's winning spree came after an eight-month layoff. Hollywood Racing Manager Anthony Delpech elaborates: "We found out she had a niggling back problem, and she was sent to the farm. It was the right decision; she came back a different horse. She has turned the corner and is doing everything we ask of her."
"Mike has earmarked the Listed Gardenia Stakes on 5 November and although opposition will be stronger, we would obviously like to get some black type into her.
Depending on that run, she will probably then go to Cape Town, but at the moment, it's one step at a time."
Hats off to Team Valor's Barry Irwin for breeding this talented daughter of perennial hot sire Trippi.
From a family bursting with top-notch talent, her dam, the Western Winter mare Valor Red, won the East Cape Oaks and is a daughter of blue hen mare Nacarat, whose liaisons with the former Lammerskraal champion resulted in no less than five stakes winners, headed by the Gr1 winners Red Ray and Nania.

Stuart Pettigrew's unbeaten three-year-old Captain Peg lived up to her name when she claimed the scalps of some smart sorts over 1450m, notably that of last season's Gr1 Thekwini Stakes runner-up Rock The Fox. The winner also ratcheted her perfect record to four from four with a cosy half-length victory over the returning Moraine, a winner of her only start back in June.
Pettigrew had snapped up the daughter of Jay Peg for a mere R70 000 at the Cape Ready To Run Sale and at the time of writing, she leads the log for next month's lucrative Ready To Run Stakes. Will the R600 000 stake lure her to the
Western Cape, considering there is valuable black type up for grabs in the Gr3 Starling Stakes on the same weekend?
Pettigrew answered that question: "It all depends on the draw. Don't forget, it's an expensive exercise to take just one horse to Cape Town. However, now that Cape Racing want out-of-province horses to come and are prepared to pay the expense, we may nominate her. Feather Boa, who recently won me the Bloodstock SA Sales Cup, will go for the Starling, but that too, is draw dependent."
Bred at Hassen Adams's Nadeson Park Stud, Captain Peg is a daughter of champion racehorse Jay Peg and is the first foal of the Captain Al mare Emblem Ahoy, a winning own sister to the stakes-placed duo of Ribbons
For Thee and Captain's Emblem, while grandam Main Emblem boasts a string of stakes places headed by a second in the Gr1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship.
Pettigrew explained his purchase of Captain Peg: "I just liked the cross, Jay Peg on a speedy Captain Al mare. I paid R70 000 for her and to be honest, I couldn't place her, people thought I was mad to buy a Jay Peg, so I ended up keeping her for myself. In fact, together with my son, we are the major shareholders. She's a small filly, but she has done us proud."
Corné Spies-trained Prophet proved another popular
winner on the day. The son of Querari repelled a strong challenge from favourite Quantum Theory to notch up his third win and first beyond 1100m. Already a Gr3 winner of the Godolphin Barb Stakes, he is the pride and joy of owner/breeder Arné Botha and is out of stakes-placed Amber Bouquet, who like Jay Peg, is by the shortlived Camden Park.
At this stage, the young gelding has big shoes to fill, considering his own brother Monks Hood completed the Gr2 Dingaans/Gauteng Guineas double prior to his export to Hong Kong.
Prophet may have the makings of a Guineas prospect but as his trainer pointed out, that's still a long way off.
He elaborates: "Yes, a nice run with Prophet. His two immediate aims right now are the Graham Beck Stakes over 1450m at the end of the month and then the Dingaans. And let's not forget the Tony Ruffel, the race William Robertson won back in January.
"One has the Cape sort of in your mind, but it's a 5% sort of niggle, I'm not too sure whether I would want to travel him with all the races in Joburg coming up. It does take a lot out of them, that Cape trip, but you know, depending on how he goes I suppose you can't totally
disregard it. Let's sort of stick with the Graham Beck and the Dingaans for now and then we'll assess it as we go."
It goes without saying that the connections of this talented trio have plenty to look forward to, so here's hoping they will continue their upward trajectory as the season gathers momentum!

A MOMENTOUS DAY FOR DENNIS DRIER
Dennis Drier was the master planner behind the star-studded career of former darling of the South African turf Beach Beauty, and it was sentimentally appropriate that the Summerveld senior statesman saddled the winner of Sunday’s Hollywoodbets Greyville feature named in honour of his dashing daughter of Dynasty.
The Boland Stud-bred Master Of My Fate filly Broadway Girl followed up on her recent maiden
victory when she cruised in to win the R90 000 nonblack-type Beach Beauty Mile, and she now heads to the Cape for their season and far tougher assignments.
The diminutive Beach Beauty won five Gr1’s for Dennis Drier, and while the Sunday feature attracted no stakes performers with a highest MR of 85 for debut winner Palm Breeze, Broadway Girl could do little more than win and she looks likely to show further improvement when going over more ground.
Having her fifth start, Broadway Girl (9-4 favourite), who races in a
family partnership of Dennis’ son Wayne, the veteran’s daughter Claire and Mom Gill, accelerated with some ease 350m from home and went on to beat Mystic Angel (16-1) by 3,50 lengths in a time of 97,90 secs.
Devils And Dust (10-1) was beaten a further 1,10 lengths back in third. Now a winner of 2 races with 3 places from 5 starts, Broadway Girl took her stakes earnings to R131 250.
A ROYAL MOMENT
The coronation of King Charles III will take place on May 6 next year on the same day that the 2,000 Guineas is set to be run at Newmarket.
The BHA is understood to be considering the implications of the announcement in relation to fixtures due to be held that day.
There are five further meetings scheduled in Britain at Doncaster,
Goodwood, Thirsk, Hexham and Uttoxeter.
The Jockey Club, which runs both of Newmarket's courses, said it was too early to comment about the announcement.
The coronation will take place at Westminster Abbey in London and be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. The King will be crowned alongside his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort.
The King enjoyed his first winner in the royal silks with Just Fine at
Leicester this month, while Perfect Alibi's Beckford Stakes success at Yarmouth on Monday was a first Listed victory for the monarch.
The coronation will be the first for almost 70 years, the last being for Elizabeth II in June 1953, and the first held on a Saturday since Edward VII in 1902.

Broadway Girl is welcomed back by jockey Keagan de Melo and the Drier team after her feature win on Sunday
LOOK OUT FOR BROADWAY GIRL’S HALF BROTHER!
Boland Stud enjoyed a good few days over the past week, with the Ceres farm responsible for breeding Sunday's impressive Beach Beauty Mile victress Broadway Girl, and also a pair of winners at Turffontein the previous day in the shape of Hollywoodbound and Seconda Errore.
Broadway Girl, however, was the star of Boland's show over the weekend, with the three-year-old Master Of My Fate filly powering away to win Sunday's Beach Beauty
Mile by a clear-cut three and a half lengths.
Trained by Dennis Drier, Broadway Girl has now won twice from just five starts with the three-year-old having broken her maiden last time out.
Boland's Eugene Freeman remembers Broadway Girl as "a beautiful, tall scopey filly, always loved the big blaze! She was a very kind, friendly filly much like her mother."
Unfortunately, Eugene no longer has Broadway Girl's dam Nzinga (by Dynasty), but he will be
offering a Captain Of All half-brother, named Tribal Leader (Lot 38) at this year's November Two Year Old Sale.
His breeder raves about the colt, saying he is a "beautiful big boy".
Broadway Girl has a fascinating pedigree -her sire Master Of My Fate (also sire of Hollywoodbound) is son of the legendary Jet Master, while her granddam Make My Millenium was a half-sister to the mighty Jet Master.
LIFE’S A BEACH – WELL, SORT OF…
Already an industry pacesetter after becoming the first member of the fairer sex to be crowned SA Champion Apprentice Jockey last season, Rachel Venniker ticked off another item on her professional bucket list when booting My Ami Beach home at Fairview on Friday – thus opening her East Cape account and now officially having ridden a winner in all of our three racing jurisdictions.
Just under 24 hours after winning the second race on Eye Of The Prophet for trainer Paul Matchett at the Vaal in Vereeniging on Thursday, Rachel was in action 1000km away in Gqeberha and walking the Fairview track prior to Friday’s meeting.
“Patience is a fundamental attribute of any professional jockey’s make-up, but I was very keen and felt that I really needed to break my duck down in the Eastern Cape. I walked the Fairview track before the first on Friday and thought it surely can’t be that complicated! I ran second on Mhlabeni for Mr Duncan McKenzie in the fifth race – and then left it to the very last when My Ami Beach ran a cracker. She gave me a very nice feel – she’s a lovely filly and she will always be special as my first Fairview winner,” enthused Rachel in a chat
with the Sporting Post on Sunday.
Trainer Emmanuel Kaknis told the Sporting Post that his team was proud to have been able to give the SA Champion Apprentice her first winner in the coastal racing centre.
“She really is a professional individual and a very talented rider. We wish her many more winners and will continue to follow her fortunes,” he added.
The Jonsson Workwear-sponsored Rachel has gained invaluable experience by travelling to different centres and says that she is humbled by the support all over South Africa.
“Jurgen van Heerden, who is based just outside of Port Alfred, asked me to travel down to ride a few of his horses. So the door opened and I’m really happy to get the opportunity in the Eastern Cape. The flights to Gqeberha are pretty pricy, so we really have to make the trip count and I hope to ride many more winners in what is a really friendly and warm racing community,” added Rachel.
Travelling to Gauteng is a slightly different logistic as Rachel hitches a lift up the N3 on the SAJA bus with the other apprentices.
“I have been given some solid support up North too, and I really enjoy the challenges of the different racecourses. It’s all great experience!”
Asked if she had an Agent to optimise her riding opportunities,
Rachel points out that apprentices are not allowed to make use of third party ride bookers.
“I did ask, but the request was declined. The rules do not allow for Agents for trainee riders,” she adds.
While the 21 year old lifetime equestrian had to originally bizarrely break down doors to get an opportunity to ride professionally, the blonde lady bomber has more than proven herself equal to the task since booting her first winner Calulo home for her mentor Michael Roberts in July 2021.
It took the influence of the legend Roberts, fellow champion Garth Puller and Kevin Wright, to finally get Rachel Venniker through the doors of the SA Jockey Academy at Summerveld.
It was a fourth attempt and a thankfully successful one at breaking down the resistance and South African racing is well and truly richer for Miss Venniker’s presence.
And all of this happened against a background where we are ironically supposed to be encouraging female participation – but a solid candidate (and that’s not only in hindsight!) has to bulldoze her way in. Bizarre?
Go figure!
And to add to the confusion, female jockeys were allocated a 1,5kg allowance from the start of this term which ‘hopefully has the desired effect of growing the female participation in our jockeys ranks in South African and thereby creating sustainability of their participation’. That’s the official word.
With another winner at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday, Rachel has picked up momentum since a slower than normal start to the term, even though she is once again in command at the top of the apprentice
log. She is currently on 24 winners at a strike-rate of just under 12% and a commendable eighth on the senior national log.
We asked if the recent hullabaloo over the sex allowance had impacted on her.
“It wasn’t fun I suppose being near the epicentre of a fairly heated debate, but I am the only active female jockey in South Africa, so I can’t blame anybody for involving me or mentioning my name in despatches. But it’s nice that folk have generally stopped talking about it,” she laughs.
Rachel comes out of her time at end 2023. We asked about a second national title after her 70
winners from 570 rides at the end of last season.
“Things are going well and I’m working hard. There are a lot of talented youngsters in our riding ranks, and it’s a long road yet. But I feel good.”
Rachel has declared that her future dreams include the opportunity to ride in Hong Kong, the UK and Japan.
For now, she is focussed on being the best of her generation. And she certainly is doing a damn fine job of building that professional reputation!
Pauline HermanA CHANGEAS GOOD AS A PAID HOLIDAY!
Pumi Mjoka steers Phedra to a breathtaking win Pauline Herman PhotographyThe Sharon Kotzen-trained Phedra ran some very talented boys clean off their feet with a dazzling display of speed to win the R175 000 Cradock Place Stakes at Fairview on Friday.
The daughter of Vercingetorix has well and truly turned her career around since relocating from the Cape earlier this year. Phedra is a galloping mobile billboard for any owner looking for a reason to take their chances in the Eastern Cape!
An eleven times raced maiden in the Western Cape, the decision to transfer the 4yo flyer to
the Eastern Cape has resulted in a first-time maiden victory and a total of 6 wins from her 7 starts to date.
That’s not half bad going, and while Friday’s feature was merely a nonblack-type dash, she bolted in like a speedster in her prime and surely headed for some decent paddock boosting feature credit sometime soon.
Mpumelelo Mjoka allowed the 8-1 shot to stride from the 1200m jump and she duly delivered, beating the 18-10-year younger hotshot Cliff Top by an emphatic 1,75 lengths in a time of 68,40 secs.
Phedra races in a partnership of Ben Botha (Pty) Ltd (Nom: Mr Arne Botha), Messrs K B Larsen, I D
Berg, Robin Strydom & G M Kotzen.
A R50 000 Cape Premier Yearling Sale graduate, Phedra, a Maine Chance bred by Vercingetorix (Silvano) out of the unraced Trippi mare Prittim, has now won 6 races with 4 places from 18 starts for stakes of R357 526.
The Sharon Kotzen team maintained their good form with a three-timer on the day, with Gavin Smith and Alan Greeff grabbing a double apiece. Luyola Mxothwa and Richard Fourie were the top jockeys on the afternoon with two winners each.

Johannesburg charities. The charities will once again draw a horse in the race and depending on the finishing position they will receive a cash donation.

READY, STEADY, GO SOETENDAL!
Julia Pilbeam’s
Soetendal Estate is the acknowledged benchmark platform of Ready To Run stars over seventeen years of blood, sweat, tears, and a deep love and passion for the horse.
Looking ahead to the Cape Racing Sales Ready To Run Sale on 29 October at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, Julia says it’s all system go for another vintage draft.
“I don’t think I have ever
had a more quality offering of diversity and the whole team is excited and looking forward to heading to the Southern Suburbs in a few weeks from now. It’s a great venue and we are all set for a big one,” she adds.
The beautiful Soetendal Estate is a horsey paradise and lies some 15km northwest of Wellington, off the R44, facing the dramatic mountains of the Limietberg and offering stunning scenic views on all sides. The magnificent farm, a National Heritage
Site, was founded in 1852.
Julia started the Wellington based operation on a small scale on 50 hectares of magnificent Boland countryside in 2005.
The property was extended to offer a range of superior services including backing and pre-training, yearling and Ready-to-Run sales preparation spelling, rehabilitation and postoperative care, permanent
boarding of broodmare, foaling down and weaning, and transportation of mares to all sires in the Western Cape.
Here is a collection of thoughts from Julia’s notebook:
# 6 – unnamed colt by What a Winter ex Cordial Report
Well-grown, scopey What a Winter colt. He’s a fluent mover with an incredible temperament. His dam is a half-sister to champion Highland Night and dual Gr1 winner, and sire, Warm White Night -the latter, like What A Winter, sired by Western Winter.
# 10 – unnamed colt by Twice Over (GB) ex Dancing Delight
Big, powerful Twice Over colt; he’s forward in his work and already looks like a three-year old. He is out of a half sister to Gr1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship winner Give Me Five.
# 11 - filly named Frances Ethel by Rafeef (AUS) ex Daphne Garland
Tall, rangy filly; a classic type who will just continue to improve and from the same female line as Rafeef's grandsire Danehill. She is a half-sister to the smart Jaimala and out of a full-sister to triple graded stakes winner Queen's Bay and the dam of Gr1 SA Derby winner Bouquet-Garni, also the family of Australian Gr1 winner
Ace High -whose dam, like Rafeef, was sired by Redoute's Choice.
# 17 - colt named Mo Gem by Royal Mo (USA) ex Emerald Eye
This Royal Mo colt is the epitome of athleticism. A balanced colt who loves to work, he is a half-brother to a winner, out of a half-sister to two black type horses. The granddam is a 3/4 sister to Gr3 Magnolia Handicap winner Princess Faberge.
# 22 – unnamed filly by Fire Away (USA) ex Hollywood Strip (AUS)
Exciting filly by first crop sire Fire Away. She’s well grown,
Wayne MarksLot 67: Across the Bow (c) by Vercingetorix ex Beau Var
carries herself beautifully and has an elastic action, a forward, tough filly. She’s a half-sister to the useful Pretty Ballerina, and is closely inbred to Danzig, out of a half-sister to dual Gr3 winning filly Hollywoodboulevard, dam of Gr3 Champagne Stakes winner Walk Of Fame and In Full Flight Hcp winner On That Boulevard.
# 45 – colt named Mo Ment by Royal Mo (USA) ex Peach Delight
Big, deep-girthed Royal Mo colt with a lot of quality about him - he moves very well and looks a classic type! His dam won seven and was runner up in
the Listed Lady's Bracelet
# 47 – unnamed colt by Captain of All ex Pepperdine
It’s hard to believe that this quality Captain of All colt is a very late foal; he’s done exceptionally well through his prep, and we are very excited with what he’s showing us. He is nicely bred too, being a three-parts brother to a winner out of a Trippi half-sister to Gr3 Umkhomazi Stakes winner Captain In Command and Ladies Mile winner Canadian Sunset -both of whom, like Captain Of All, were sired by Captain Al.
# 50 – unnamed filly by William Longsword ex Polly Wolly Doodle
Beautifully put together William
Longsword filly with a powerful hindquarter; she’s tough and honest, and has been one of the easiest horses to prep in the draft - everything has been easy for her! Her dam is also a half-sister to Gr1 winner Master Plan, out of a 4 time winning own sister to Gr2 winning filly Polyphonic and 3/4 sister to champion filly Along Came Polly.
# 51 -unnamed colt by Pomodoro ex Radiant Splendour (AUS)
Quick, racy and precocious, this Pomodoro colt is from a top Australian family.
Out of a twice winning daughter of star sire Lope De Vega, this colt's granddam won the Gr1 Australian Oaks.
# 67 - colt named Across the Bow by Vercingetorix ex Beau Var
From a very speedy dam line, this exciting colt is a beautiful mover. He’s a forward colt and very honest, bred on the same cross as Gr1 winning sprinter Alesian Chief. He is out of a winning own sister to stakes winners Le Var and Winter Passion, family of SA Oaks winner Wind Chill -who, like Vercingetorix, was sired by Silvano.
# 69 – unnamed filly by William Longsword ex Cranberry Gold A William Longsword filly
that caught our eye from the day she arrived with her good walk and big, bold eye, she has a very good action too. She is out of a Silvano three quarter sister to Oaks Trial winner Chariot Of Gold.
As agent for Owloon, Julia is offering a tantalising trio:
# 39 - filly named Milliondollar Girl by Flower Alley (USA) ex Money Surger
A compact, strong and precocious sort, this racy filly looks early and just does everything she’s asked. She is a half-sister to a useful winner, this filly is out of the tough, ten time winner Money Surger.
# 62 - filly named That's My Baby by Master of My Fate ex Xilomante (BRZ)
She’s a late foal but is well-grown with good substance. She already shows good work, and will keep improving; she’s bound to catch
the buyer’s eye. She is a half-sister to two winners, including Gr3 Man O'War Sprint runner up Laetitia's Angel, this filly's dam won seven including the Listed Queen Of The Sand Handicap.
# 68 - colt named Donny Tee Duke Of Marmalade (IRE) ex Cape Charlotte
This Duke of Marmalade colt walks exceptionally well, and has a groundcovering action - definitely one for the shrewd buyer, as he will continue to develop. He is closely inbred to Danzig, this colt is out of Listed Stormsvlei Mile runner up Cape Charlotte.

Racing Ready To Run Race is restricted to eligible graduates of the 2021 CTS Ready To Run Sale.

CHAMPIONS DAY – DID YOU KNOW…?
Baaeed will become only the second horse, after Frankel, to be rated higher than 130 to run on Champions Day. He has an official rating of 135, the same that Frankel boasted before he won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in 2011. Twelve months later, Frankel was rated 140 before and after his
Champion Stakes success.
Kyprios has carried all before him in the staying division this year but will be a notable absentee in the Long Distance Cup. Instead, it will be his older sister, Search For A Song, runner-up in 2020, who will carry the family flag. On the subject of siblings, Wordsworth is in line to try and emulate his brother, Kew Gardens, who won
the Long Distance Cup in 2019, while Mimikyu will seek to win the Fillies & Mares six years after her sister, Journey, won the race for the same connections. And like Journey, Mimikyu will wear a hood.
We can’t wait for Saturday!

Nature Strip wins the 2021 TAB Everest
SCHOFIELD RIDES GODOLPHIN'S EVEREST HOPE
Sydney’s Royal Randwick hosts the world’s richest race on turf on Saturday, 15 October 2022. History will be made as twelve of the fastest horses compete for A$15 million in prizemoney.
The TAB Everest has made headlines both in Australia and Internationally. The world’s richest race on turf sees twelve of the very best sprinters compete for over $15 million in prizemoney.
Sydney’s Royal Randwick hosts the race day as one of Australia’s most prestigious racing venues. Runners for the Everest are allocated using a unique concept developed by Racing NSW, whereby 12 'slots' are available for sale, which then allows the slot holder to negotiate with owners, pick their own horse and agree on a prize money split to then have that horse run in the race over 1200m.
Former South African jockey Glyn Schofield rides Ingratiating for James Cummings in the
Godolphin silks.
Trainer James Cummings believes Ingratiating's racing pattern of closing with a late rush will be suited by the frenetic tempo of The Everest.
"He gets a huge test this weekend, there's no doubt he's got an enormous mountain to climb," Cummings said.
"But he's one of the horses
who should be able to capitalise on the pattern and be storming home in the race. He's going to be an off-speed horse in a race where there's going to be plenty of pace up front. He copes with his racing very well and has that glint in his eye at the moment, so it's no surprise to see from us that he's back in the best form of his life."
Godolphin has come closest to winning The Everest with minor placegetters Osborne Bulls (2018), Trekking (2019) and Bivouac (2020).
"We have had some very good competitors in the past but Godolphin is yet to win the race," Cummings said.
"We'd dearly love to win,
Runner (Barrier)
1. Nature Strip (12)
but it doesn't get any easier every year, and a very difficult year presents this year with the world champion sprinter in Nature Strip.
Nature Strip has drawn the widest barrier for this year's TAB Everest, as the champion sprinter looks to defend his crown.
The eight-year-old gelding took out the 2021 edition of the race in dominant fashion and is the overwhelming favourite to go back-to-back for Chris Waller, but will have to overcome barrier 12 to take out the $15 million feature.
The wide draw for the eight-time Group 1 winner hasn't impacted his price in the market, with Nature Strip still rated a $1.90 chance with TAB.
Joyful Fortune has drawn the inside barrier for Saturday's race at Royal Randwick, while three-year-
old Jacquinot will jump from the second gate.
Group 1 winner Private Eye will jump from barrier three, while the veteran sprinter Eduardo, who has beaten the favourite on multiple occasions, will come from barrier nine for Joseph Pride.
Lost And Running, who many believe is the main danger to Nature Strip, has drawn barrier seven.
The barrier draw was announced on The Jackson yacht around Sydney harbour on Tuesday night, after the actual draw itself was done earlier in the day.

IT'LL BE ONE FOR THE BOOKS!
Dubai Racing Club has announced an enhanced programme for the 2023 Dubai World Cup Carnival, which will see millions up for grabs across nine exciting weeks of action at Meydan Racecourse.
Established in 2004, the 20th edition of the Dubai World Cup Carnival will get underway on Friday, January 6th, when the Gr2 Al Maktoum Challenge and Gr2 Al Fahidi Fort provide twin feature races. Alongside them on a
pulsating night of racing is the Gr3 Dubawi Stakes for the dirt sprinters, as well as the Listed Ertijaal Dubai Dash – renamed in honour Shadwell’s seven-time course winner.
The second week of the Carnival, on Friday January 13th, also features a new race; the Thunder Snow Challenge, over 2000 metres on dirt, which recognizes the dual Dubai World Cup winner and could provide a pointer towards that very race.
Speaking of equine stars, the same night sees the inaugural running
of the Ipi Tombe Stakes, for fillies and mares on turf over 1400metres, which honours the Zimbabwe-bred mare who won the Al Fahidi Fort and Dubai Duty Free in 2003 on her way to Horse of the Year Title.
Major General Mohammed
Al Essa, General Manager of Dubai Racing Club, explained the new look of the Carnival programme: “Under the guidance of Sheikh Rashid Bin Dalmook
Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Racing Club, we
have been working hard on the Carnival progamme for 2023,” he said. “We have reintroduced several handicaps which will hope will increase overseas participation and work well with the established Grouprace calendar.
“We look forward to welcoming horses, trainers, jockeys and owners to Dubai for what we are sure will be an exciting and memorable 20th running of the Dubai World Cup Carnival.”
In total, there are 21 Group races for Thoroughbreds, while Purebred Arabians
have their share of the action, too. They have a new race, the Big Easy Arabian Sprint Championship. The rest of the Arabian races are of Group status, including three Group 1 legs of the Al Maktoum Challenge series.
The 2023 Carnival will provide ample opportunities for handicappers, with 20 handicaps, divided between dirt and turf, complementing the pattern races. The Jumeirah Turf Series for threeyear-olds returns for a second season with an enhancement of two Classic races for three-year-old fillies' events also on turf.
Super Saturday – the official ‘dress rehearsal’ for the $30.5million Dubai World Cup meeting – takes
place on Saturday, March 4th and once again features two Group 1’s – the Jebel Hatta and Al Maktoum Challenge Round 3 – and four Group races, plus the new Ras Al Khor, which was oversubscribed for the inaugural running in 2022.
The official Horsemen’s Brochure for the 2023 Dubai World Cup Carnival will be published shortly.
The full programme can be viewed online here: DWCC Program 2023.pdf (dubairacingclub.com)
THE STAR OF THE SHOW!
The first day of Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale got off to a strong start, with six lots selling for 300,000 guineas or more led by a SEA THE STARS colt who topped the opening session at 800,000 guineas, the highest price at the sale since 2019 and the third
highest priced colt in the history of the fixture.
Following the unparalleled demand for yearlings by DUBAWI and FRANKEL at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, it was the turn of another European ‘super-sire’ to claim the headlines.
A son of SEA THE STARS provided the highlight of the opening
session when selling for 800,000 guineas to Anthony Stroud of Stroud Coleman Bloodstock.
Bids came thick and fast from around the ring for the Windmill Farm consigned colt with trainer Charlie Fellowes, stood alongside Will Douglass, raising the
price above half a million guineas before Stroud and eventual underbidder MV Magnier settled into a protracted duel with the former prevailing.
The successful purchaser commented: "He is a very good-looking horse with a good pedigree. The nick works quite well with the Shamardal mare, and also you have Al Aasy, by Sea The Stars, in the family too. He’ll be trained by John Gosden for a longestablished client."
The colt is out of KITCARINA, a daughter of SHAMARDAL and Listed
winner KITCAT and a full sister to the dam of Group 1 Coronation Cup second AL AASY, from the family of European Champion PENTIRE. The sale is the best yearling price achieved by consignor Fiona Marner’s Windmill Farm, who commented: "We bought the mare and since her purchase the pedigree has just really developed. Her full-sister Kitcara became the dam of Al Aasy and this colt has been so special all along. We have a lot to thank John Clarke for as we had the foal share to Sea The Stars, and the mare is back in-foal to the sire, carrying a colt. It is just fabulous to have such a good first foal out of her."
Marner continued: "He has done so well in the last month, every day
he keeps improving and he just loves his work and has a wonderful temperament. It is such a team effort, we are just a tiny farm, we only have five young mares. The mare is owned with two very long-standing and loyal partners, Derek James, who is in America, and Peter Wollaston."

TATTS SALESTOPPER'S SA TIES
Last week's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book1 sales-topper is a colt with a truly exceptional pedigree.
Knocked down to Godolphin for 2.8 million guineas, the Frankel colt, bred on the same Frankel/ Dubawi cross as Gr1 winners Adayar, Dream Castle and Homeless Songs, is the highest priced yearling sold anywhere in the world in 2022.
One of three yearlings by
Frankel to fetch 2 000 000 guineas or more at the Book 1 Sale, the sales topping colt is out of the top-class racemare So Mi Dar (Dubawi). A full-sister to champion Too Darn Hot and Gr2 Middleton Stakes queen Lah Ti Dar, So Mi Dar showed plenty of ability in her racing career, winning four of her seven starts and running out a four length winner of the 2016 Gr3 Tattersalls Musidora Stakes and finishing a close up third in the same year's G1 Prix de l'Opera.
The impeccably bred So Mi Dar, whose Gr1 Prix Vermeille winning granddam Darara is a half-sister
to champion sire and outstanding broodmare sire Darshaan (Shirley Heights), is out of a more accomplished racemare in the form of Dar Re Mi (whose sire Singspiel was a half-brother to successful South African stallion Rakeen and who sired Ridgemont Highlands' G1 winning sire Potala Palace).
Dar Re Mi proved something of a globetrotter, like Singspiel, with Dar Re Mi capturing Gr1 races in Britain, Ireland and
Dubai. Dar Re Mi was also controversially disqualified from first place when finishing first in the 2009 Gr1 Prix Vermeille when she was eventually placed fifth.
Dar Re Mi, a Gr1 winner and Gr1 producer out of a Gr1 winning daughter of the influential mare Delsy, is directly descended in female line from French 1000 Guineas winner Banshee (granddam of outstanding sire Tourbillon), and this is also the female line of such breed shaping stallions as Mr Prospector and Seattle Slew.
This is also family with ties to the South African stud book. Ridgemont Highlands' well performed
successful broodmare Crimson Blossom (Danehill Dancer) is a member of this outstanding family.
Crimson Blossom's Dabtiya is a Shirley Heights' three-parts sister to the aforementioned Darshaan, with Crimson Blossom's fourth dam being none other than Delsy.
Winner of seven races including the 2007 Gr3 Final Fling Stakes, Crimson Blossom did her bit to uphold family honour by producing Gr3 Gold Cup/Gr3 Gold Vase winner Dynasty's Blossom (Dynasty) as well as Listed East Cape Guineas winner Brilliant Crimson (Trippi).
However, Crimson Blossom is not the only South African mare with ties to the recent pricey buy.
Selkirk mare Darisha, whose
granddam was none other than Delsey, left behind six winners including the speedy Darwin. That daughter of National Assembly finished runner up in all of the Listed Bauhinia Handicap, Listed Umngeni Handicap and Listed Gardenia Handicap, while Darwin's half-sister Dolomiti, dam of winners Val Gardena, Permesso Avanti and Trentinno, won four times and finishing runner up in the Gr3 Magnolia Handicap.
CLIFTON’S FUTURE STARS ON SHOW
Peter and Jenny Blyth of Clifton Stud are stalwarts of the South African thoroughbred breeding industry and quality is a foundation principle of their long-established operation.
Originally located in Ermelo, Clifton Stud was relocated to Rosetta, in Kwazulu Natal. The beautiful farm is situated 2,5kms off the R103, east of Rosetta and the farm is 138 hectares in extent of which 36 hectares is under irrigation.
A home to the last wellperformed son of former Lammerskraal lynchpin Western Winter to take up stallion duties, Last Winter, Clifton has produced
champions of the ilk of 1998 Durban July winner Classic Flag, Bezanova, Whatalady, Olympic Flag, Fort Vogue, and Jet Express who won the Jebel Ali Mile in Dubai.
The Clifton team have given us a peek at six of their recent new arrivals!
Enjoy the six youngsters and a standout could be the Act Of War filly out of the Al Mufti mare Valdovino – who was coincidentally trained by Michael Roberts.
The foal is a rather exciting prospect as a half sister to the Hong Kong Gr3 winner Chefano. The latter (a son of champion sire Silvano) was bred in partnership by Michael Roberts and Maine Chance and fell to a bid of R300 000 by Colin Bird at the 2016
Emperors Palace Select Yearling Sale. Chefano raced here in the care of Robbie Sage, when named Vacquero.

Liverpool vs Manchester City | Sunday 16 October | Anfield | 17:30
A game which showcases the very best in England – or if your eyebrows are already raised, it used to. Nonetheless, it’s the sort of fixture which forces your attention and intrigue irrespective of the colors of your flag.
Anfield will once again rise and welcome the Champions of England – but if its blood they are after it might not be as pleasant nor a respectful meeting, writes Ryan Liberty.
To Win Liverpool 26/10 Draw 31/10
Man City 9/10
Liverpool
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are currently 10th on the log with just 10 points from 10 games – a horrifying statistic to read of course. Now whilst I am no saint when it comes to respecting certain clubs in England, my irritation at this time stems from the narrative constantly being applied to Liverpool in the media.
This is a side who just a couple months ago were being touted as possibly the best team the league has seen. Jurgen Klopp’s ability was placed squarely on a pedestal after raising
the league and Champions League title. The impenetrable nature of Liverpool was celebrated and compared to the best players throughout history.
May I also remind you that this is a club who between those comments and their current league position, have only lost Sadio Mane from their proverbial top drawer and replaced his with an 80 million plus attacking ‘beast’.
There can be no excuse for their horrible start to the season as far as I am concerned, and more criminal narrative of ‘when it clicks for Liverpool, we know how good they can be’ needs to die a painful death.
Anyway, back to the matter at hand…
Liverpool’s defensive instability was shown against Arsenal, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus completely dominated their final third and the Reds defence had no answer. Arsenal enjoyed 46 (yes, I invite you to read it again) touches in the Liverpool box last Sunday afternoon. That’s an insane statistic – in fact I wouldn’t blame you if you thought I was pulling your leg.
It illustrates – albeit in a small way – the ease and dominance Arsenal had in entering the final third and looking to make something happen. I fear for Liverpool here though, City have players who will have the same pace and ability as Arsenal’s forwards and go on to combine that with physicality and strength, which will all be held together by patience.
Manchester City City are going to score a couple, aren’t they? I don’t mean to make throwaway comments but given the current consistent performances of both two sides – where on the field do Liverpool get a foothold? Where do they look to dominate?
Pep Guardiola’s side have become masters of managing games, and Pep himself seems happy to rest players and manipulate the outcome of games whilst also resting players given their stacked schedule.
How do you fault Manchester City, or what they have managed to do so far this season? They are unbeaten, they’ve got a certain attacking player upfront that continues to make a mockery of this brilliant league and at the risk of sounding uninspired with a touch of cliché – City are untouchable.
I know this writeup need only cover the events scheduled for Sunday evening, but is it too early to start asking about –or least postulate – the possibility of a quadruple? I mean that as a genuine question because the rotation Guardiola has available to this team is at times a little silly.
I would probably even go as far as to say that in all
his time at City, he hasn’t had the squad available to him as he does this season. Of course, I include new signings but also in terms of keeping a group of players fit.
Predicted Line-ups: Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Tsimikas; Thiago, Henderson; Diaz, Jota, Salah, Nunez.
Manchester City: Ederson;
Akanji, Dias, Laporte, Cancelo; De Bruyne, Rodri, Silva, Mahrez, Foden, Haaland.
Prediction: Manchester City + Over 2.5 goals (29/20)
For me the prediction is a bit of a non-entity really. There is nothing to suggest this ends in any other way outside of a City win. However, I think City and over 2.5 goals is a bet which obviously has an increased odds available but with little risk.
City are capable of winning with more than two goals being scored in the game on their own, but Liverpool also have the ability to get on the goal sheet. You know, if it all clicks or something.
