Gem King (Bernard Fayd’herbe) draws clear of Future Prince (Louis Mxothwa) to win the opening leg of the Cape Winter Series

Pacaya Could Be The Value

While Future Prince looks a very decent progressive sort, Grant van Niekerk has suggested players may want to give the enigmatic Pacaya another chance to shine when he steps out in the World Sports Betting Gr3 Legal Eagle Stakes at Kenilworth on Saturday. The race is the second leg of the Cape Winter Series. Pacaya takes on first leg winner Gem King (Richard Fourie takes over from Fayd’herbe) and the Hollywoodbets Durban July entry Future Prince, who looked a winner before

having to play second fiddle to the Ennion runner there.

Van Niekerk has enjoyed a great few weeks and between commuting to KZN and riding in the Cape, he feels his season is peaking at the right time. “It’s all about confidence. It’s a mind game. Sure, you have to be riding the proper horses, but things tend to go better when one is on top of your game.” Grant says that Pacaya is a classy sort and that he should not be written off in Saturday’s feature.

3

“I have won twice on him. He gives the feeling of a good horse. Justin (Snaith) has been doing one or two things differently. So we are expecting him to come back to his best. You saw what they achieved with Do It Again last Saturday!” Pacaya returned from a 12- week break post gelding when contesting the Gr3 WSB Variety Club Mile last time and was clearly in need of the outing there. Mark Currie – ‘let’s do what is best for Cape racing’

Naïve, Maybe...? Currie Calls For Calm Chairman of The Thoroughbred Horseracing Trust Mark Currie has urged all stakeholders to disregard the ‘noise’ around Kenilworth Racing and support the process of placing the region in the best possible hands to achieve a sustainable future. In an open letter to stakeholders, Mr Currie writes that, whilst he is the

Chair of the Thoroughbred Horseracing Trust and writes with the permission of his fellow Trustees, he expresses his personal thoughts on the open sessions held, the letter from the NHRA, as well as various commentaries doing the rounds. The ‘financial distress’ of Kenilworth Racing (KR) The company is audited annually, and our auditors

5

are required to review both the liquidity and solvency of Kenilworth Racing prior to releasing their audit report. They therefore satisfy themselves that we are solvent (assets fairly valued exceed liabilities) and liquid (the company can meet its cash flow obligations for 6 months after the date of signing KR’s financial statements).

KR’s assets are worth significantly more than its liabilities which is principally its loan owing to RMB (guaranteed by MOD and Phumelela). Liquidity has always been an issue for KR since before Phumelela went into business rescue and was supported through the Sustainability agreement, facilities from RMB, as well as short-term working capital provided by Phumelela. When Phumelela went into business rescue, the directors (both Robert Bloomberg and I acted at that stage with Robert providing executive services to KR as well) sought alternate sources of funding, reaching out to numerous stakeholders for support. MOD were the only organisation prepared to provide such liquidity, for which the directors and Trustees were grateful to Mrs Slack for her unwavering support. MOD have to date always provided assurances that have satisfied the directors that they have sufficient liquidity to meet the liquidity test required. Wehann Smith made reference to a ‘liquidity crisis’ that took place after the Cape Summer Season. This was caused primarily by the

Omicron virus which curtailed attendance and impacted significantly on both tote turnover and sponsorship. Again, 4Racing stepped forward and assisted with this liquidity requirement. In exchange, both MOD and 4Racing requested that adequate security be provided for these loans. When it became clear that permission for such encumbrance was required from the WCGRB, both MOD and 4 Racing still provided guarantees and liquidity for KR to continue operating. The notion that 4Racing or MOD were trying to ‘steal’ KR’s assets is absurd as a simple repayment of the loans provided will release any security that the WCGRB sanctions as appropriate for such loans. Purpose of Kenilworth Racing / Trust meeting The purpose of the open meeting held at Kenilworth on 5 May was to inform Cape Stakeholders of the Trust’s intention to dispose of Kenilworth Racing, as well as to note the challenges that KR currently faces. The sale process will not be a highest cash bid wins, but rather meeting the goals of the Trust and stakeholders of Cape Racing.

6

Broadly speaking, these would include, amongst others, property ownership, composition and size of stakes pot, strategy on dealing with current Cape stakeholders/customers (covering Grooms, Trainers, Jockeys, Owners, Punters, Racegoers and Staff) as well as the mechanism for stakeholder engagement in the future. The meeting got a little sidetracked and hopefully this clarifies our intention. Business Rescue I hear many calls for Kenilworth Racing to be placed in Business Rescue. Whilst not being totally au fait in the law of Business Rescue, I do know that this takes decisions around the company out of the hands of directors and shareholders and places it in the hands of a business rescue practitioner. Absent of post commencement funding, the BRP would in all likelihood place the company in liquidation which would lead to a sale of KR properties to developers rather than a race course operator. I fail to understand how this would benefit any Cape Racing stakeholders and for this reason, KR directors and Trustees have resisted placing KR in business rescue.

MOD / 4 Racing I am personally disappointed at the criticism being levelled at both 4Racing and MOD. We as the racing public have short memories, and I remind all critics that MOD was really the only entity that stepped forward and stabilized racing in SA. Whilst people may see Charles Savage and his comments as arrogant, his points are extremely well made. 4 Racing has set out their strategy for the future of SA racing and we can agree or disagree with their stance.

To attempt to disparage them only creates doubt in other interested parties as to the true colours of Cape Racing stakeholders – do they seek an enduring solution to horseracing or do they look for a soapbox to air their personal grievances with the way they perceive they have been treated? Conclusion Whilst I may be considered naïve, my call to interested stakeholders is to rally around and seek a solution for Cape Racing.

7

The Trustees, and particularly the Trustees dealing with the KR disposal, are independent and are committed to achieving an enduring solution for KR that will benefit all Cape stakeholders. I urge you to disregard the noise around Kenilworth Racing and support the process of placing the reigion in the best possible hands to achieve a sustainable future.

Anton Marcus pushes Do It Again out to an eyecatching victory

The 2022 R5 million Gr1 Hollywoodbets Durban July received a media turbo boost of some proportions when dual past winner Do It Again stormed to victory in the R350 000 Gr2 World Sports Betting 1900 at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday to set course for a

date with history on 2 July at the same venue. Not tuned up, going straight into a 1900m contest, and returning from a fifteen week break after running on the fringes in the WSB Cape Town Met in January, Do It Again, despite drifting in the betting to

8

7-2, stormed through under Anton Marcus’ hands from midfield to demonstrate his well-being. The 7yo resumed his winning ways two days short of a year after winning a Pinnacle Stakes in class record time at Hollywoodbet Greyville.

Candiese Lenferna

After his forward galloping stablemate Crown Towers had led the charge for much of the race, Do It Again was poetry in motion as he raced clear to beat the consistent Mount Anderson (5-1) by 1,90 lengths in a time of 116,16 secs.

Gainsford (12-1) stayed on well for third, a half length back, with Crown Towers (8-1) fading late for a well-beaten fourth.

• Crown Towers ran a 3,15 length fourth • Litigation ran a 3,75 length fifth

While Do It Again’s Hollywoodbets Durban July prospects have brightened, there were five other entrants:

• Crimson King was sixth and 3,80 lengths off the winner

9

• Decorated ran ninth and 10,05 lengths behind

• Origami finished last and 13,15 lengths off Ridgemont Highlands jockey Anton Marcus celebrated a feature double on the day and suggested that we need to appreciate moments like this. “Do It Again has become a public favourite as shown by his reception here today. I was warned not to be too hard on him today. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him in the mix when the chips are down on 2 July again,” added the man who rode Do It Again to his first July victory in 2018. An elated trainer Justin Snaith, celebrating his first feature success of the 2022 SA Champions Season, said that Do It Again’s work ‘was incredible’.

“I was hoping for a positive run. He is a legend and an incredible horse. He is what a racehorse should look like. He is so graceful,” he added. Bred by the Northfields Stud, Do It Again is by Twice Over (Observatory) out of the triple Gr3 winner Sweet Virginia. A four-time Gr1 winner, Twice Over has enjoyed a royal season so far with his top runners including Gr1 Cape Guineas winner Double Superlative, Gr2 Senor Santa Stakes winner Smorgasbord, unbeaten filly Call The Wind, and stakes winners Resonate and Young Love. The 7yo gelding has now won 9 races with 13 places from 28 starts for earnings of R9 249 100.

Do It Again won the Durban July in 2018 and 2019 and is one of only five horses to have won the big race back-to-back. The others are Campanajo (1897/98), Corriecrian (1907/1908, Milesia Pride (1949/50) and El Picha (1999/2000) Seven-year-olds have won the July only five times in 125 renewals. Do It Again has shortened to 12-1 on the big race antepost sponsors, Hollywoodbets

The Merits DO IT AGAIN remains unchanged on a merit rating of 126 following his success in the Grade 2 World Sports Betting 1900 over 1900m on the turf track at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday 14 May. The Handicappers were unanimously of the view that runner-up MOUNT ANDERSON made for the

best line horse, especially as in rating the race this way 3rd placed GAINSFORD also runs to his mark and effectively becomes a line horse as well. As such, MOUNT ANDERSON and GAINSFORD remain unchanged on marks of 104 and 99, respectively, and in rating the race this way DO IT

10

AGAIN only runs to a mark of 124. Hence there was no change to the winner’s rating. The only ratings increase was for 5th placed LITIGATION, who goes up from 99 to 101. The solitary drop was for TRISTFUL, who is down from 112 to 110.

Anton’s Gracious Gesture Our cover image this week is courtesy of Equus Award winning photographer Candiese Lenferna shows Anton Marcus handing his WSB 1900 trophy to a couple of young fans around the Hollywoodbets Greyville

parade ring on Saturday. It was a really decent and gracious gesture by the top jockey, a Durban July record holder.

His win on Do It Again in 2018 made him the only rider in history to have won the July five times.' He might be able to make it six on 2 July!

PREMIER LEAGUE SIDE SPONSOR JULY DAY GR1 FEATURE Leading English Premier League side Brentford FC will bring an excitingly innovative and intriguing international dimension to Hollywoodbets Durban July day on 2 July, when ‘The Bees’ will proudly sponsor the prestigious undercard of the R1 million Gr1 Garden Province Stakes.

In what is an historic and watershed moment for South African horseracing, Brentford FC becomes the first international professional sports team to sponsor a major event on the South African horseracing calendar.

17

For the social set, and in a delightful nuance for the fashionistas looking to put in a star performance in the Hollywoodbets Durban July Fashion Theme, ‘Show Me The Honey’, the presence of ‘The Bees’ on the great racing day adds the proverbial sting in the ‘tale’, and offers a treasure trove of creative

delights for those seeking some sartorial inspiration. The Brentford FC Garden Province Stakes is the supporting Grade 1 feature to the R5 million Hollywoodbets Durban July to be run at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Africa’s premier day of horseracing. Alongside the Gr1 Schweppes Majorca Stakes and the Gr1 HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes, the Garden Province Stakes is a potential Equus championship clincher and the season’s final leg of the unofficial fairer sex weight-forage mile ‘Triple Crown’. A strategic contest on the 2021/22 season programme, the illustrious Garden Province honour roll boasts a bevy of fairer sex stars of the ilk of champions Beach Beauty, Inara, Celtic Sea, and many more. And the 2022 renewal is again set to host an outstanding line-up that could see a sensational North vs South showdown between the 2022 SA Triple Tiara winner Rain In Holland, recent HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes winner Princess Calla, and Cape superstar, Captain’s Ransom, a dramatic last stride winner of the 2022 Schweppes Gr1 Majorca Stakes.

Gold Circle Marketing Executive, Steve Marshall labelled South Africa’s newest Grade 1 sponsor ‘a win for South African horseracing and a scoop for the country’s flagship day’. “We have great pleasure in welcoming Brentford FC to Durban. The Garden Province Stakes is one of the premier attractions on the SA Champions Season programme and history shows that it always hosts the best fillies and mares from across South Africa. Having an internationally recognised football side like Brentford FC – who boast a global following – on board is a feather in the cap for all stakeholders, and represents an appeal for Africa’s greatest horseracing event to a wider market of sports fans.” Sponsored by South Africa’s leading international sportsbook operator Hollywoodbets, the West London-based Brentford Football Club competes in the English Premier League, after gaining promotion via the playoffs at the end of the 2020– 21 Championship season. Jon Varney, CEO of Brentford, said that the unique sponsorship opportunity was an honour and privilege. “Our proud association with Hollywoodbets has grown in leaps and bounds over the past

18

two years and, as a club and corporate entity, we share many of the same values. We look forward to sponsoring the Garden Province Stakes and being represented at the home of the Durban July, Hollywoodbets Greyville, on the big day to share in the great African celebration of the sport of horseracing,” he added. Popularly tagged ‘The Bees’, Brentford FC was founded in 1889 and played home matches at Griffin Park from 1904, before moving to the Brentford Community Stadium in 2020. Their chief rivals are fellow West London clubs, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers. Entries for the Brentford FC Gr1 Garden Province Stakes close at 11h00 on Tuesday 14 June. Declarations are due by 10h00 on Wednesday 22 June. The Hollywoodbets Durban July will be run at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday 2 July. Limited tickets are available. ‘I have a lot of the family and this brings them all alive again. It’s going to make the Derby so much more exciting for me’- Gaynor Rupert

20 Gr3 Derby Trial Stakes winner Stone Age

Caroline Norris

EPSOM DERBY CONTENDERS’ SA LINKS 21

For avid followers of British racing, May is an especially important month, as it marks the build-up to the Epsom Derby, a time when three-year-olds come out of the woodwork to lay claim to a berth in the famous Classic. Interestingly, the current market leaders are two colts whose families can be found at the most southern tip of Africa. As has become the norm, Ireland’s powerful Ballydoyle stable boasts a veritable arsenal of Derby prospects. Luxembourg was the winter favourite to give Aidan O’Brien an unprecedented ninth English Derby win until a muscle injury sent him to the sidelines. No worries though, O’Brien immediately had a ready replacement in Stone Age, who became the new Derby favourite following a runaway victory in the Gr3 Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown just over a week ago. The colt is a son of O’Brien’s first Derby winner, the mighty Galileo (who else) and hails from the same female line as Drakenstein Stud’s venerable broodmare Buffalo Dance. By Sadler’s Wells out of Gr1-placed, multiple French

Gr2 winner Bright Moon, this Irish-bred showed little on the track, as did her half-sister, the modest winner Bonanza Creek, who features as the dam of Stone Age. However, the pair’s siblings include a host of stakes winners, amongst which the champion and French Oaks winner Bright Sky and Bonanza Creek’s Gr1-placed own sister Board Meeting, who produced the Gr1-placed stakes winner Big Blue to Galileo. Since her arrival in 2001, Buffalo Dance has established her own dynasty at Drakenstein. Her progeny include Gr2 Betting World Oaks and Gold Bracelet third Shingwedzi and East Coast Handicap runner-up Barberton Daisy, who is already dam of Perfect Promise Sprint victress Lesedi La Rona and East Cape Oaks winner Swazi Queen. Buffalo Dance is also grandam of Gr2 Premier Trophy winner and Hollywoodbets Durban July entry Hoedspruit, and the champion Zimbabwean filly Raven Girl. Many of her daughters and grandaughters now roam the stud’s paddocks and not surprisingly, owner Gaynor Rupert is looking forward to the Derby with keen interest. “I have a lot of the family and this brings them all alive again. It’s going to make the Derby

22

so much more exciting for me,”she remarked. However, Stone Age has been relegated to second favourite by Sir Michael Stoute-trained Desert Crown, who will bid to become his veteran trainer’s sixth Derby winner. By Galileo’s champion son Nathaniel, he made an auspicious start to his career when disposing of his rivals by five and half- lengths on debut in November. The colt returned to action at last week’s York meeting where he lived up to his lofty reputation by landing the Gr2 Dante Stakes with utter authority. Commenting on his colt’s Derby chances, Stoute remarked at the time: “I think he has to go there with a very strong chance. He is a beautifully balanced horse.” Out of a Green Desert mare, the colt hails from a family nurtured at another famous stud, Juddmonte Farms. His grandam Foreign Language is a half-sister to the successful Juddmonte broodmare Binche, the dam of champion French miler Byword, who, during his brief spell as a stallion in South Africa, sired Gr1 Empress Club victress Camphoratus.

Chase Liebenberg

Hollywoodbets Durban July entry Hoedspruit – powerful family connections! Also dam of multiple Gr1 winner Proviso, Binche recently produced a fourth stakes winner when her Frankel son Baratti won Longchamp’s Listed Prix Lord Seymour in the Juddmonte silks.

Those silks were also carried by Stoute’s most recent Derby winner Workforce, who claimed the blue riband in 2010. Desert Crown on the other hand, races in the same Saeed Suhail colours of Stoute’s 2003 winner Kris Kin.

This year’s Cazoo Derby will be contested on Saturday, June 4.

Chollima storms in under Corne Orffer to beat Peace In Our World (JP van der Merwe) in a top finish

DERBY DAZZLER FOR WOODHILL Glen Kotzen’s Woodhill Racing Team threw any Friday 13th caution or nerves to the wind, and travelled up the Garden Route to claim a sparkling victory in the R350 000 World Sports Betting East Cape Derby at Fairview on Friday. The big win came in the form of the clearly talented Pathfork gelding Chollima who built on his solid Cape form to storm home from last in the straight to win with something in hand. Corne Orffer partnered the Pathfork (Distorted Humor)

gelding who gave Paarl trainer Glen Kotzen a second victory in the race after Captain Cook won it for owner Juan van Heerden back in 2006. Chollima looked the right one but started a generous 7-2. He stormed forward early in the home strip and held his advantage to the line to beat local hope Peace In Our World (20-1) by 1,25 lengths in a time of 149,94 secs. The Snaith’s Top Quality (112) moved up dangerously but had to be content with third, a further 1,25 lengths back.

24

Bred by Dr Veronique Kritzinger, the winner is out of the unraced Silvano mare Chillon. Now a winner of 2 races with 6 places from 15 starts, Chollima took his stakes bank to R380 150. A peach of a purchase for just R50 000 at the 2020 BSA Mistico Yearling Sale by the astute Glen Kotzen, Chollima looks a candidate for better things and the Gr3 Pocket Power Stakes at Kenilworth at the end of June could be next.

The Merits CHOLLIMA has had his rating raised slightly from 89 to 90 following his win in the Listed WSB East Cape Derby over 2400m on the Fairview turf course on Friday 13 May. The Handicappers were of the view that runner-up PEACE IN OUR WORLD made for the best line horse here,

leaving him unchanged on a rating of 90 (bearing in mind that he carried 1 kg more than the winner in terms of the race conditions.) 3rd placed TOP QUALITY was raised from 78 to 86, while 6th finisher ALMIGHWAAR was picked up from 68 to 74 to at least make him the equal of

25

the 74-rated 7th placed FUTURISMO, whom he beat at level weights. There was also an increase for WAR MAN, who is up from 67 to 70. The only ratings drop was for THIS GENERATION, who is down from 73 to 71.

Lot 13-a 1/2 sister to PE Gold Cup winner Plano, sells in foal to The United States

SILVANO’S TOP WEEKEND IN ADVANCE OF THURSDAY SALE Silvano has three wellbred daughters on the Cape Mare And Weanling Sale, set to take place at Kenilworth racecourse on Thursday. Silvano’s champion sons Hawwaam and Vercingetorix both also feature as covering sires at the Cape Mare Sale. And not for a first time, the now deceased former SA Champion sire Silvano stole

the show on a South African feature race day – but this time it was as a broodmare sire that he shone. Silvano mares produced a hatrick of winners at Fairview racecourse on Friday, with Ekoria (Futura) victorious in Friday’s sixth race, the Listed WSB Dahlia Plate, Chollima (Pathfork) landing the seventh race, the Listed WSB East Cape Derby, and Basetsana

27

(Ideal World) winning the eighth race on the Fairview card. Silvano is also broodmare sire of smart three-year-old Homely Girl (Querari), who finished second in Sunday’s Listed Syringa Handicap. Silvano daughters also fared well on the racetrack the following day where Princess Anastasia and Silver

Maria ran second and third respectively in Saturday’s Listed KRA East Coast Cup. Ekoria is out of the Silvano daughter Equina, a former star in Zimbabwe who won the 2014 Castle Tankard among others, Chollima is out of the unraced Silvano mare Chillon, and Basetsana (bred on the same Ideal World/Silvano cross as Listed The Scarlet Lady winner Louisiana) is out of the winning Silvano mare Vera. Promising two-year-old Ekoria sports a particuarly interesting pedigree. Not only does her highly promsing sire Futura (Dynasty) sport the Plum Bold mare Bold Vixen as a fourth dam, the aforementioned Bold Vixen also ranks as the third dam of Ekoria’s high-class dam Equina. Chollima’s dam Chillon hails from an outstanding international family, while Chillon’s speedy half-sister Champery (Querari) dam of this season’s Gr1 WSB Cape Fillies Guineas winner Chansonette (the latter being sired by Silvano’s outstanding son Vercingetorix). Chillon’s dam Celigny is a half-sister to Gr1 Las Virgenes winner Eden’s Moon (Malibu Moon), and this is the immediate family of US champion and top-class sire Theatrical (Nureyev) among many others.

Vera, dam of Friday winner Basetsana, is another Silvano mare to hail from an outstanding female line. Her dam Vain Affair (Vain) was a sister to Gr1 winner Festal and half-sister to La Bamba -the dam of Gr1 Hong Kong Sprint winner Inspiration (Flying Spur) and Gr1 Australian Guineas winner Wandjina (Snitzel). (La Bamba also ranks the granddam of former high-class South African raced twoyear-old Banaadeer, who ran second, to champion Carry On Alice (Captain Al), in the 2014 G1 SA Nursery.) This past weekend, however, is not the first time that Silvano sired broodmares have made their mark. Silvano already ranks as the damsire of such notable graded stakes winners as Goodtime Gal (Gr3 Victress Stakes, Gr3 Diana Stakes),

28

Wonderwall (Gr2 Joburg Spring Challenge), Cosmic Light (Gr2 The Debutante), Barahin (Gr2 Golden Horseshoe, Gr2 Charity Mile, Gr3 Jubilee Handicap), and this season’s top-class threeyear-old Cosmic Highway (both Barahin and Cosmic Highway being sired by Gimmethegreenlight while Wonderwall and Cosmic Light were both sired by QuerariCosmic Highway and Cosmic Light are both out of Silvano mare Cosmic Dream). With a number of topclass daughters yet to be represented on the racetrack, Silvano’s broodmare influence looks set to grow in the coming years. Here is a snapshot of each of the lots – please click this link for more

Ekoria charges home under JP van der Merwe

FUTURA STAR ON THE RISE Drakenstein Stud’s highly promising sire, and former Horse Of The Year, Futura came up with a very impressive two-year-old winner when his daughter Ekoria landed the Listed World Sports Betting Dahlia Plate at Fairview on Friday.

jockey JP Van Der Merwe guiding the filly home to a clear-cut and emphatic three and a quarter length win.

Trained by Gavin Smith, Ekoria came into Friday’s two-year-old feature off a brilliant, seven and a quarter length maiden win, with the Futura daughter having previously finished second in the Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery on debut.

She is out of former Zimbabwe star and Silvano mare Equina -who, like Futura, is directly descended in female line from the Plum Bold mare Bold Vixen.

Ekoria turned Friday’s Dahlia Plate into a procession, with

Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Ekoria was a R260 000 buy from the 2021 August Two Year Old Sale.

This is also the family of impressive recent Gr2 Heineken SA Nursery winner Miss Cool -whose dam French Rose is a half-sister to Futura.

30

The latter had also enjoyed success at the Vaal last Thursday where his Listed Ormond Ferraris Oaks Trial winning daughter Light Of The Moon ran out a good winner of the fifth race. Futura has some very smart two-year-olds representing him this season, with the champion also sire of recent Gr3 Godolphin Barb third placegetter Aztec Warrior and the promising filly Princess Ozma.

GARETH VAN ZYL’S FEATURE 1-2

32 Anton Marcus drives She’s A Keeper to an easy win

Candiese Lenferna

33

In a unique move to use a Gr1 as a stepping to a Listed contest, after her fair effort behind Princess Calla in the HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes at Turffontein on 23 April, trainer Gareth van Zyl crowned a great race as saddled the first two home in the afternoon’s support feature. After La Luvia had carted them along at a muddling pace, Anton Marcus produced She’s A Keeper with a characteristic turn of foot at the 350m.

The daughter of Gimmethegreenlight scythed through her field and went away powerfully to beat stablemate Princess Anastasia (33-1) by 1,20 lengths in a time of 124,05 secs. Dean Kannemeyer would have been pleased with the showing of third-placed Silver Maria (10-1) after an eighteen week break. Jockey Anton Marcus said that She’s A Keeper was the class in the race but that she was still carrying the pudding. “A lot of effort has gone into this filly. Gareth deserves an accolade for getting her ready. And for those that argue that the weight differentials are relative, I don’t agree. We carried 61,5kgs – I’d prefer

60kgs – and with the weights then dropping at the base accordingly. The winner was bred by the Missing U Syndicate and is a daughter of champion sire Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready) out of the Trippi mare, Gold Trip. She’s A Keeper has won 7 races with 2 places from 14 starts and stakes of R700 925. Hollywoodbets Durban July entry Lyrical Dance failed to show and finished out of the money and 5,55 lengths off the winner.

The Merits SHE’S A KEEPER remains unaltered on a rating of 115 following her success on highly favourable weight terms in the Listed East Coast Cup for fillies and mares over 2000m at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday. The Handicappers took the view that 5th placed KEEP ON DANCING and 6th placed LA LUVIA made for the best line horses here, which leaves them unchanged on marks of 94 and 84,

respectively. In assessing the race this way, 8th finisher AQUAE SULIS runs to her mark of 87, effectively making her a line horse as well and leaving her rating unchanged. In assessing the race this way, SHE’S A KEEPER only runs to a mark of 107, hence her unchanged rating. There were ratings increases for 2nd placed PRINCESS ANASTASIA, who goes up from 81 to 90, for 3rd placed SILVER MARIA, who

35

is up from 80 to 88, and for 4th finisher SCENTED MISTRESS, who goes from 90 to 94. The only drop was for ONLY THE BRAVE, who is down to 85 from 87.

MJ puts another subject on the spot! Ululate comes home powerfully under Muzi Yeni

ULULATE SHOUTS LOUDEST

Mauritzfontein’s consistently successful sire Ideal World marked his 29th stakes winner when his classy daughter Ululate won the Listed Syringa Handicap at Turffontein on Sunday. Trained by her owner St John Gray, four-year-old Ululate received a welljudged ride from Muzi Yeni, who produced Ululate with a sustained late run which saw the Ideal World filly stay on powerfully to land the spoils by nearly a length and a quarter.

The Syringa Handicap was a fine result for Ideal World, whose daughters Ululate and Florentine ran first and fourth respectively.

Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Ululate has now won seven times for earnings of over R430 000. Out of the Shamardal mare Shauntrel, Ululate was a R100 000 buy from the 2019 National Yearling Sale. She is one of a large number of talented fillies sired by Ideal World, with the latter’s

36

other high-class daughters including champion Smart Call and graded stakes winners of the ilk of Inverroche, Mount Laurel, Saragon, Vistula, and Zante. Ideal World, whose other stakes winners this season include Cat Daddy and Donald McDonald, has four lots on offer at the 2022 KZN Yearling Sale.

The Merits ULULATE has had her rating raised from 92 to 96 after she captured the Listed Syringa Handicap for fillies and mares over 1600m on the Turffontein inside track on Sunday 15 May. The Handicappers were of the opinion that 3rd placed ROUGE ALLURE made for the most suitable

line horse, leaving her unchanged on a mark of 94. There were increases also for runner-up HOMELY GIRL, who is up from 103 to 104, and for 4th placed FLORENTINE, who was 2kgs or 4 pounds under sufferance at the weights and who goes up from 86 to 89.

37

Three horses were given a rating’s drop. NOW YOU SEE ME is down from 90 to 88, while VICTORIA PAIGE received the identical drop and also goes from 90 to 88. There was also a drop for PRETTY BETTY, who is down from 100 to 94.

Global Team Horse Racing

MJ puts another subject on the spot! Three teams compete over three weeks in a knock-out challenge, with the top two vying for the title at the final showdown on the 2nd of September 2022

MORE ON AN EXCITING NEW CONCEPT! It was recently announced that the Super Six Series that ran last year, is now back as Global Team Horse Racing (GTH) - only this time it will be bigger and better than before! WHAT is different and WHAT remains the same? The new format is moving away from the traditional horse racing model but the incentives for jockeys, owners and stakeholders stay the

same and the races are held strictly according to National Horseracing Association (NRA) rules and regulations. Jockey riding fees remain unchanged and the racing stakes are the same, if not slightly higher, than regular racing and regular punters will still be able to wager on the races via all the standard channels available. The net effect is that GTH will add four additional racing fixtures to the racing calendar

44

in 2022 as well as add more than R3,5 million in additional stakes. GTH has also committed over R10 million in investment for 2022 to develop the live series and broadcast all fixtures on SuperSport and through streaming services around the world.

HOW are the events run? To keep the audience fully engaged, GTH has been specifically designed to be fast-paced, with 8 races taking place within the span of two and a half hours and only a 15 to 20-minute break between races at the event.

competing in each race (4 runners per team) in races that don’t exceed 1600 meters. The teams will be balanced with horses matched according to their NHRA allocated merit ratings. Day 1 Showdown: Team A Vs. Team B

The first event of the GTH series takes place at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse on Friday the 5th of August 2022. Follow us on social media for updates.

Three teams go head-to-head over three weeks scoring points per race run, with the two highest-scoring teams battling it out in the final event in the fourth week of the series. Teams are easy to identify as the jockeys (10 per team) wear team colours.

Tex Lerena MJ puts another subject on the spot! Sherman Brown in his hospital bed on Friday evening

SHERMAN’S LONG ROAD AHEAD Jockey Sherman Brown was discharged from hospital on Saturday after he was airlifted from the Vaal last Tuesday, following his mount Crown Plaza appearing to clip heels around the 50 m marker in the seventh race. The 47 year old jockey was admitted to the Alberton Hospital with spinal and rib fractures.

He sent thanks to well-wishers from his hospital bed on Friday evening and said he was looking forward to going home. JASA’s Tex Lerena, who visited Sherman, told the Sporting Post that injury was an occupational hazard for any jockey and the fact that a rider could walk and talk after any accident was ‘a win’.

53

“Sherman looks brighter, although he is obviously still in pain. He is confined to wearing a brace and will be undergoing regular checks and therapy over the next few months. It is likely to be longer than 3 months before he can even consider a return to the saddle. For now it’s patience and recovery. We wish him the very best,” added the former jockey.

The Jockey Club MJ puts another subject on the spot! Former Cape-based Brian Finch

FORMER CAPE RACING MAN HEADS EPSOM DOWNS Former South Africanbased racehorse owner Brian Finch will succeed Julia Budd as the Chair of Epsom Downs Racecourse, The Jockey Club has announced. The appointment will take effect from Monday 5th June, immediately after the 2022 Cazoo Derby when Julia Budd’s term concludes. A passionate racing fan since childhood visits to Borrowdale Racecourse in Harare, Zimbabwe, Brian has been involved in racehorse ownership for more than 25 years in various countries including the UK.

Also a keen student of bloodstock and pedigrees, his first experience at Epsom Downs came in the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year of 2012. Brian joined the Epsom Racecourse Committee in 2021. Brian, who has had a home in Epsom since 2005, spent most of his working career with a British multinational company. Currently retired, Brian is a member of the Racecourse Committee at Sandown Park Racecourse and a Trustee of the National Horseracing Museum. Julia Budd became Chair at Epsom Downs in June 2016

55

and during her tenure has overseen a rise in The Derby’s prize money value to £1.5million, ensuring it remains the richest race run in the UK. Her leadership was instrumental through the challenges created by the pandemic and her term has also seen the strengthening of ties between the racecourse and the local community in which it sits. Brian Finch said: “I am delighted and hugely honoured to succeed Julia at Epsom Downs, a racecourse that will soon host the 243rd running of the iconic Derby.

“I very much look forward to working with the Jockey Club team to build on the great work of my immediate and past predecessors ensuring that the Derby and Epsom Downs racecourse continue to remain part of the national social fabric.”

and Epsom Downs will be a huge asset as our stewardship of this iconic racing venue and its most famous race enters a new and exciting chapter. “I must also thank Julia for her dedication, time and wise counsel in her time as Chair.

Sandy Dudgeon, Senior Steward of The Jockey Club, said: “I am delighted that Brian has agreed to become Chair of Epsom Downs Racecourse following this year’s historic Derby.

“Her guidance in navigating the unprecedented challenges of the last two years has been invaluable and this year’s Derby and its place in the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations will be a fitting way to end her term.

“His experience both inside the racing industry and beyond, coupled with his huge enthusiasm for the sport

“She does so with my best wishes and the sincerest thanks of all at The Jockey Club.”

56

Julia Budd said: “It has been a privilege to serve as the Chair of Epsom Downs Racecourse for the last six years and to have worked with such a brilliant committee. “My thanks go to the team and the local training community for the support they have given throughout my tenure. “To me, The Derby will always remain as the greatest Flat race in the world!” www.racingtv.com

Newbury Racecourse Baaeed storms home under Jim Crowley

Superstar Makes It Seven Baaeed made the perfect start to his highlyanticipated four-yearold campaign with an emphatic victory in the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. William Haggas’ superstar made effortless progress

last term, going unbeaten in six runs and graduating from winning a Leicester maiden in June to winning back-to-back Group Ones in September and October. The Sea The Stars colt was a hot favourite to extend his winning streak to seven and the

58

4-9 market leader made short work of eight rivals in the mile showpiece. Chindit set out to make all, giving jockey Jim Crowley the opportunity to settle in behind and he could be called the winner some way from home as his rider started to move

up the gears and Baaeed lengthened away. To his credit, Real World tried to make a battle of it in second and ran a fine race in his own right, but he was no match for the three-anda-quarter-length winner, with Chindit staying on gamely for third, a further length and three-quarters back. Crowley said: "He is an absolute pleasure to ride and very straightforward. He is the most beautifully-bred horse. He is everything you want in a racehorse. Nothing seems to faze him. “He doesn't appear to have any weaknesses. I can't think of one. He is really bright, has gears, relaxes and stays the mile extremely well and has got a turn of foot. You couldn't ask for more really. William Haggas on future plans for Baaeed plus the possibility of his star miler stepping up in trip this season “I have sat last on him at Goodwood and he has got a very good turn of foot, so it is not like you have to be in a certain place in a race – just where he is happy, really. “Mohaather, who won the Sussex Stakes, was very underestimated. What he did that day was exceptional. This horse looks like he could be the best (I've ridden).

“It was very straightforward. Everything went smoothly – it was like clockwork. There was not a lot of pace in the race, but he has such a turn of foot, but if they had gone quicker, it probably would have helped him.” On stepping up in trip at some point, Crowley added: “You would imagine the Juddmonte (International) would be tailormade for him." A rather relieved Haggas said: “I have to say I have never been more nervous before a race than I was today. There was a bit of pressure, because all you fellows keep writing nice things about him. But he did it nicely today. “I would not go as far as to say he is the best horse in the world – that is the sort of thing others might say – but he has done very well. It was a strongish field, there was a Classic winner in there and two fillies who were very useful last year, so he has done really well. “If we step up to a mile and a quarter, if he stays fit and healthy, we will go for the Juddmonte." He added: “Even better news is that my wife sadly can't be here today, because she is in Dubai and our daughter's waters have just broken, so we could be grandparents again in the very

59

near future – which is much more important!” Unsurprisingly connections of the placed horses are plotting a Group One course to avoid the winner. Real World’s trainer Saeed bin Suroor said: “He’s run a big race back on turf and jumped well from the stalls, having missed the break last time. There is no disgrace finishing second to the best horse in the country and Europe, if not the world. “If Baaeed’s going for the Queen Anne, Real World would go for the Prince of Wales’s.” Richard Hannon, trainer of third-placed Chindit, said: “We had a point to prove and he’s proved it behind an exceptional winner, who obviously we will avoid in future. “We wanted to ride him prominently up with the pace and Pat (Dobbs) said he quickened lovely when he asked.”

At the beginning of this season, we asked for a title race and an exciting finish to the domestic season – well we have certainly been given that and more! With what feels like an all or nothing weekend, the champions have a stake at defending their title… Liverpool want to win a league not fraught with five subs, no fans, or waterbreaks…Burnley, Leeds and Everton are still justling for survival and in North London we have a battle for European recognition! Ryan Liberty writes that gGoing through the season with all of you has been brilliant! Let’s do it again!! Sunday 22 May 2/1 Crystal Palace | Draw 5/2 | Manchester United 13/10 (17:00) A fixture which, may bring down the curtain, but won’t necessarily have too much interest other than pride. For the simple punter though, the goals market might be the place to live this weekend. In a game such as this, with not much to play for, one would expect each side to play with freedom and an absolute release from pressure. Both teams scoring and over 2.5 goals should earn a place on the weekend

betting slip. Get one at even money.

19/20 Leicester | Draw 26/10 | Southampton 26/10 (17:00)

5/10 Arsenal | Draw 34/10 | Everton 46/10 (17:00)

Leicester will likely come away from this campaign feeling neither here nor there. They haven’t been particularly great, but it is not as though they have shot the lights out either!

This could become an absolute humdinger of a fixture. It is one of the only fixtures on Sunday where both sides have an incredible amount to play for! Newcastle’s dagger to the heart of everyone associated with Arsenal football club. As far as Everton is concerned, they simply have to win this – and cannot afford to do anything less than have a crack here. Back Everton on the +1 handicap at 13/10. 1/6 Chelsea | Draw 6/1 | Watford 15/1 (17:00) A lot has been made of Chelsea this season, they were unlucky in the FA Cup final against Liverpool and I’m not sure you can have too much more to complain about if you support the Blues. Given everything that has happened off the pitch, I think Thomas Tuchel and those players have done an excellent job! Watford were battered by Leicester last weekend, and they are surely looking forward to resetting in the holiday and then their campaign in the Championship. Chelsea to win + over 2.5 at 6/10 is the play for me.

James Maddison has been brilliant though, and if the young midfielder is able to play in a role free of unnecessary structure and rigidness – I think we see the best of him. I can’t see how the Saints contain a Leicester attack playing with nothing to lose – back the hosts. 27/20 Brentford | Draw 49/20 | Leeds 19/10 (17:00) With so much on the line for Leeds, and only pride to play for at Brentford, you might be tempted to relegate this to a Leeds win…see what I did there? Look, Leeds simply has to win! That must be their mindset, and I am sure it will be. My only concern is that in wanting to get a result so badly, they might find themselves chasing the game and as a result be left exposed and vulnerable to a Brentford counter. For the safety of the betting slip, back over 2.5 goals at 15/20.

29/20 Burnley | Draw 23/10 | Newcastle 19/10 (17:00) Newcastle had their finale on Monday, I don’t think they have any added incentve to get a massive result here to be fair. It is Burnley who will likely be the only side with something to fight for. The thought of relegation isn’t nice or easy for anyone – so I think the Clarets will give it a go but I’m not sure they survive this season. Back Burnley to score under 1.5 goals at 5/10. 2/11 Manchester City | Draw 6/1 | Aston Villa 12/1 (17:00) Well, well, well. You cannot deny the fairytale association or the readymade headline: “Gerrard wins Liverpool historic 20th league title!”. Granted, it is a title that has never been seen before, but as much as I try, I just can’t shake the shivering feeling that the stars have aligned, and it just might happen. City looked almost weathered against West Ham. They couldn’t match the intensity and pressure being applied by West Ham at times and even Pep Guardiola seemed to pace and prowl the touchline in a way not often seen before. My worry is that Villa has nothing to play for and can totally have a crack at

City here. The saving grace of course is that City is an exceptionally talented side and are playing in front of their own supporters… For betting purposes, over 3.5 goals at 11/10 is a shrewd bet. One that allows you to sit back and enjoy everything this marvelous day will surely hold. 11/1 Norwich | Draw 54/10 | Tottenham 2/9 (17:00) Tottenham have ignited their Champions League hopes once again, they are squarely in this fight and will no doubt look to travel to Carrow Road with ideas of absolutely destroying the alreadyrelegated Canaries. The hosts will play with slight endeavor – propelled by their loyal fans – but very little quality. Spurs winning is a banker, for more value throw in a clean sheet for Antonio Conte’s men at 15/20. 29/20 Brighton | Draw 47/20 | West Ham 18/10 (17:00) I have been incredibly impressed with what West Ham have done this season. They have continued to at times punch above their weight, they have competed in the league and given themselves something to cheer about in Europe. David Moyes should take a fair bit of credit.

Brighton is almost in the same boat, Graham Potter’s side has fared well given their limited resources, and in this season alone they have taken points off United, Arsenal and Spurs! I reckon both sides will be looking ahead to next season already and I don’t think it’s necessary to split them. Both teams scoring is available at 7/10, get on. 1/5 Liverpool | Draw 58/10 | Wolves 12/1 (17:00) I know that the ramification of this game is huge, but I can’t seem to muster the same sort of excitement in looking at the fixture on paper. Wolves are horrible and I wouldn’t go anywhere near them here. They have had a miserable season, but for the burst of quality we saw in early February. Liverpool should have their way here. Playing at Anfield I think they have more of a chance of closing the goal difference gap on City than anything else here. Back the hosts to win by three or more at 27/20. QUAD @ 11/1 Crystal Palace v Man United: Over 2.5 goals & BTTS 1/1 Man City v Aston Villa: Over 3.5 goals 11/10 Tottenham Win 2/9 Liverpool By 3+ Goals 27/20
