Sean Tarry's In Other Words faces her big test as she goes for five on the trot

Gr3 FLAMBOYANT STAKES at Greyville on Friday

I

Last season’s Equus Outstanding Stallion Dynasty celebrated a top two finish in the Gr3 Christmas Handicap at Greyville last weekend and he could repeat the feat at the same venue on Friday evening when three of his smart daughters line up in the R250 000 Gr3 Flamboyant Stakes.

t Is Written became the 32nd stakes winner for former Horse Of The Year Dynasty when he won at Greyville on Boxing Day beating the talented Stormy Eclipse. This weekend it is the turn of the girls to get 2016 off to a champagne start and with Olma, Sabaha and Brown Sugar carrying the Dynasty banner, fireworks are but a spark of genius away.

Overdue

Frank Robinson trains the Cheveley Stud bred Olma, a lightly raced winner of 5 of 15 starts – and an overdue candidate for a stakes victory. Olma cracked back to something like her best last time when beating Sabaha (another Dynasty 1-2) in a Conditions Plate over 200m further than she runs on Friday evening. A glance over Olma’s formline shows that she has been highly regarded

by her connections and has campaigned against the best of her generation. She meets Sabaha again here and has a 2kg weight turn against her for the 1,75 length beating. Olma looks to have matured and strengthened into her 4yo term and her penultimate start when a 1 lengths second to Alghadeer in the Listed Michaelmas Handicap was an outstanding effort – albeit on the polytrack.

Duncan’s Duo

Duncan Howells has two runners in the race and he must fancy the chances of Sabaha turning the tables on Olma. The Gary Player Studbred Sabaha has only blot on a generally consistent copybook. That was her out of province raid to the Gr2 Joburg Spring F&M Challenge where she ran 9,25 lengths off the class act, Lazer Star. She is quite a highly strung

sort but if she brings her A-game to Greyville and behaves under the lights, she could give Olma a serious run for top honours. Stablemate Trini’s Colateral is one of only two 3yo’s in the field. The daughter of Lateral has not run for 11 weeks as she missed a scheduled prep due to a surface change in mid November. She has won twice from six starts and while not exposed at any level of competition, could challenge for minor place money.

De Kock Challenge

Mike De Kock’s Australianbred Alice Springs has drawn widest of all but looks set to recapture her earlier spark when winning 4 of her first 6 starts. The daughter of Hussonet ran a decent third to Chennai Babe on the polytrack last time, despite being hampered at a crucial stage of the race. She may also hold Sabaha on

the Joburg Spring Challenge run – but the Howells’ filly will be a different proposition at home. Sean Tarry’s Trippi filly In Other Words has stepped up the ladder with impressive resolve, winning her last four on the trot – since her debut second. Drawn wide here, she will enjoy the services of Anton Marcus and needs to show that she is as effective on the turf as she is on the poly – where all her four wins have been achieved. It is difficult to fault her and if she is good enough, she won’t be going home emptyhanded.

Fair Form

The former Stuart Pettigrew runner Future Fantastic has her third run for Des Egdes. The daughter of Lateral ran third behind Olma and Sabaha last time of asking and is 2kgs worse off for a 5,25 length beating by the Robinson runner. Her early Joburg form was fair. The Weiho Marwing trained Lertasha has drawn nicely at 2 but comes off an eight week break since an unplaced run at Turffontein. She is more competitive in KZN but looks outclassed by the younger fillies.

First South African Yearlings 2016 by the Proven Sire

Sire of 7 Gr1 winners Sire of 75 Stakes Performers Sire of 20 Group Winners

Gavin Van Zyl has a decent hand with both Cassie O’Malley and Brown Sugar looking capable of upsetting the applecart – but both would need to run above their ratings. Cassie O’Malley has been placed consistently in lower handicaps since her last win beating Krystke Carrington over the 1800m at Turffontein. Brown Sugar has not won in over a year but has run two decent thirds at her last two starts. She does look held by In Other Words on her penultimate start. Doug Campbell has kept the 3yo Visionaire filly Lala ticking over nicely and she has found her feet since herb unsuccessful feature exploits early on. She won a lowly rated handicap 1200m at her penultimate start and then ran on strongly on the poly when under a length fourth to Chennai Babe last time. If this test of strength has not come too early for her, she could well find her way into the place money. The Dennis Drier-trained Casha has pulled the best of the draw but has not run for 26 weeks and has poor form at her last three starts. It is difficult making any sort

Winning Start

Olma is surely one of the better non-stakes winning 4yo fillies around and she is the selection, albeit not an overly confident one, to get the better of In Other Words and Sabaha. It may pay to add Alice Springs to bigger perms. Here’s to a great 2016 – and what better way to start than on a winning note.

Khaya Stables Gr2 DIADEM STAKES at Kenilworth last Sunday It is often said that jockeys are the worst judges. But that maxim came slightly unstuck at Kenilworth on Sunday when Mike Bass’ retained rider Grant van Niekerk produced the Trippi mare Lanner Falcon with a sustained late run to clinch top honours in the R400 000 Khaya Stables Gr2 Diadem Stakes.

M

ike Bass Racing maintained their outstanding record in the race by saddling the top two home – a pair of grand blacktype mares, who can pace it with, and show up the best of the boys, on most days. It was also a fifth Diadem win in 17 years for Mike Bass – who saddled his first winner in the 1200m feature when young Van Niekerk was still riding a tricycle. It was clear that the victory came something out of the blue, with the winner’s

owner-breeders absent from the post-race presentations, hosted by leading Kannemeyer patron and big-race sponsor, Lady Christine Laidlaw of Khaya Stables. But the man with the biggest smile on the honours stage was the rising youthful talent of Grant van Niekerk, who cheekily suggested (as subsequently confirmed by assistant Candice Robinson), that a lot of the credit for the win must go to himself. “I think they wanted to send her to PE – so a lot of the credit must go to me. I think she is a top filly and I have always felt she might even have a Gr1 win in her along the way. She found

all the way to the line. She just doesn’t like to be bustled – last time they went too fast for her over 200m shorter. This one is for Mr Bass,” chirped Van Niekerk. Assistant trainer Candice Robinson confirmed her jockey’s claims. “We considered a Listed race for her in PE on New Year’s day. But Grant said he’d win the Diadem, so we gave him the chance. She is so versatile and her next target will be the Majorca Stakes,” she said. With the South Easter howling, the ten-strong field split into groups on the inside and outside of the track, with Sean Tarry’s

speedy 4yo Bichette leading the charge on the outside – with Fly By Night and Gulf Storm showing the way on the inside. Lanner Falcon was relaxed some way off the pace down the inside, and with 300m to go it was apparent that the outside group were under severe pressure as Fly By Night galloped strongly, with Gulf Storm snapping at her heels. But Van Niekerk had switched the chestnut Lanner Falcon out for a run and the daughter of Trippi came on strongly to reel in Fly By Night inside the 100m marker and won by 1,50 lengths in a time of 72,08 secs, to secure

a career peak victory. Gulf Storm was a head back in third, with the grey bomber King Of Pain running a decent L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate prep by storming late into fourth, and 2,30 lengths off the winner. The pacesetter Bichette faded out to last. Lanner Falcon has now won 8 races with 10 places from 28 starts and took her earnings to R1 221 025. The Drakenstein bred mare is a daughter of Trippi, out of the USA bred French Deputy mare, Hosta, and thus hails from a Gr1 winning family. She will make a superb broodmare one day – and don’t write off a Gr1, just yet.

her record to 4 wins with 4 places from 11 starts and stakes of R269 325. Bred by Team Valor International, she is a daughter of multiple

champion sire Captain Al out of the three-time Western Winter mare, Chiquita, who won from 1000m to 1200m. Pencil her name in.

LAISSERFAIRE STAKES (Listed) at Kenilworth last Sunday

Victoria Is Queen Of Kenilworth

T

Justin Snaith is unstoppable in the Cape juvenile races and racked up his third win from three races with Captain Al colt, Sergeant Hardy at Kenilworth on Sunday. Five races later he was back in the winner’s box courtesy of the multiple champion sire again, when Victoria Lavelle won the R150 000 Listed Laisserfaire Stakes.

he former SA champion trainer has enjoyed extraordinary success with the Captain Al progeny and the speedy 3yo Victoria Lavelle put her hand up as a decent sprint prospect, when registering her first stakes success against some quality opposition, that included Gr1 winner, Entisaar. Victoria Lavelle produced a scintillating display of speed in the 1100m feature and stayed on strongly when it counted to beat the long rested (and nibbled at) Champery by 1,50 lengths in a time of 65,93 secs. Dean Kannemeyer’s Real

Princess was best of the more fancied runners, doing her optimum work late to finish a head back in third – indicating again that she may well be crying out for a little more ground. Mike de Kock’s Entisaar ran under 2 lengths back in fifth, in another below-par performance. Winning jockey S’manga Khumalo said that Victoria Lavelle had demonstrated plenty of natural speed. “She played up before the start and was slightly slow away. But things went very well and she won convincingly,” he said. Trainer Justin Snaith said that he was excited to get a

call from S’manga Khumalo’s agent to enquire about a ride in the feature. “You have to have a top jockey on board and S’manga rode a great race today. Funny enough, Bernard (Fayd’herbe) rode her last week and said that this filly is in a bad place. I took her to the beach and she was so relaxed, and gave me a good feeling.” Part owner John Freeman said that the winner was named after fellow partner Countess S Labia’s late sister and that he could also not take the credit for selecting her at sale. “Chris and Jono (Snaith) were keen on her,” he said modestly as he reflected on

One Man's Dream could follow up on his last win

SOPHOMORE SPRINT (Listed) at Kenilworth on Saturday

Gr3 LEBELO SPRINT at Turffontein on Saturday A competitive looking sprint handicap opens the page on the 2016 Gauteng feature programme at Turffontein on Saturday. After his confidence boosting last win, it may pay to follow Louis Goosen’s One Man’s Dream as a potential winner of the R250 000 Gr3 Lebelo Sprint.

A

ndrew Fortune teamed up with the talented 5yo son of Greys Inn who scored his first victory in over a year when running on stoutly to ward off the attentions of Moofeed over Saturday’s course and distance. Coming in with 60kgs in a mixed bag nine horse field, he has a little more to do now and meets Tiger Territory on 1,5kgs worse for a 1,50 length beating last time.

Interesting Runner

Tiger Territory was a proven sand performer before the demise of the Vaal alternate surface , but he is no slouch on the turf and is always dangerous when chasing them late. His stablemate Wisaam is a lightly raced son of More Than Ready, who has won two of his four starts. Muzi Yeni partners the unexposed 3yo as he steps up in class. If the top stable has sorted out the respiratory noise he made when chasing Manx Park home on Christmas Eve, he may be worth including. Roy Magner’s hardknocking Kahal gelding Greasepaint has lost the sparkling edge of his form of three months ago. At best he could run this lot down, and should be watched as he drops down his handicap mark.

Top Efforts

Paul Peter’s Mod Barley always shows good pace and seldom runs far behind. He finished 3,40 lengths off Brutal Force in the Merchants and looks better than a threetime winner at this stage of the game.

His runs to Doing It For Dan in the Golden Loom and to Zambezi Trip prior to that are a measure of his real ability and the son of Antonius Pius is a danger in a closely contested event. Sean Tarry’s Arabian National is back from KZN where he won two of his five starts. Both of those were on the polytrack though and he looks held on his Joburg turf form. Grant Maroun’s speedy Mullins Bay gelding Viking Hero is always thereabouts and was down to run this past Tuesday at Turffontein. His run there should be monitored and he will certainly strip a fit horse if he takes his place here. He is a course and distance specialist and must be taken seriously. The speedy Jo Malone is the only filly in the race and looks a likely pacesetter. The daughter of Tiger Ridge registered her last win on the sand and may be best for a quartet back end berth. Leon Erasmus’ Supanova is also a proven sand horse – his only two wins have come on that surface. He contested a lowly rated handicap over the course and distance last time and lost a shoe when finishing a well beaten 6,10 lengths behind Carter.

Close Call

In typical handicap fashion, there is not too much to choose between the majority of them. Mike De Kock’s Wisaam has only his fifth start and could be the biggest headache for Andrew Fortune as he gets 7kgs from the Goosen runner. Greasepaint is due to find his earning legs again and Tiger Territory and Mod Barley are both capable of securing top honours.

T

The R150 000 Listed Sophmore Sprint is the main attraction at the first Kenilworth meeting of 2016. The multiple Gr1 winning CTS Million Dollar candidate Seventh Plain heads the weights and looks ready to atone for that last blot on his copybook.

rainer Dennis Drier made no secret of the fact that Seventh Plain was the spearhead of his larger than usual Cape raiding party this season and the jolt of seeing the handsome colt knocked off his pedestal in the Lanzerac Ready To Run Stakes last month, came as a shock to many.

Excuses Seventh Plain came into that race off a four month plus break with two consecutive Gr1 victories in the bag. His 15 draw over the Kenilworth 1400m and his lack of match practice told as Gavin Van Zyl’s Budapest ran right away from his field from a favourable draw to beat Seventh Plain by 5,75 lengths. The fact that Budapest ran stone last in his subsequent start in the Cape Guineas will not be a red light – the fact is that Seventh Plain is lengths better than Budapest and it is difficult seeing that one ever finishing in front of him again. Seventh Plain has seen the Kenilworth straight track, having won their on debut over the 800m. He was beaten next time up in the Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes by the enigmatic Buckinghampshire, who finally won his Novice just the other day in PE. Bar his last explained effort, Seventh Plain has continued to improve and with Anton Marcus in the irons should go in again to record his fifth career win.

Heel Deal Marcus rode Tar Heel to win the Need For Speed Sprint last time in a dazzling display of pace over the Kenilworth 1000m. The son of Var is very talented but he is drawn on the wide

Are you in it to win it? Be part of history with the richest horse race on African Soil, the CTS Million Dollar - runs January 2016

outside this time and will need more than a little luck to escape the attentions of Seventh Plain in the final stages. Mike Bass trained course and distance winner Ernie is no slouch and as a course and distance winner, must come into the quartet play. The son of Elusive Fort finished runner up in a desperately close call behind Captain Alfredo in the Listed Southeaster Sprint last time. That was over 100m shorter than he tries on Saturday and the way that he rocketed through off a strong pace, suggests that a repeat performance will be forthcoming on Saturday.

Forward Fellow Paul Reeves’ speedy grey King’s Apostle gelding Forward Drive is something of a course and distance specialist and meets Tar Heel on 2 kgs better terms for a 6,55 length beating in the Need For Speed Sprint. Forward Drive won his penultimate start (a MR 90 Handicap) with a display of tactical versatility – he ran on to beat The Tripster and showed that he is not a one-trick tearaway. Winter Prince will be bidding to give trainer Brett Crawford a further ratification of his smart potential. The son of Western Winter runs off an 86 rating and is thus way out at the weights with the proven gallopers. But he has won three on the trot since shedding his maiden at Durbanville in October, and drops 200m in trip. This well bred colt looks headed in the right direction.

Puller’s Pair Glen Puller saddles a pair of runners and Aldo Domeyer’s mount Illuminator looks the more progressive of the two. The son of Trippi won his first two jumps over

Saturday’s course and distance and then produced two very decent feature race efforts. He ran fourth and under 0,75 lengths off Hard Day’s Night in the Selangor and was then nibbled at in the betting before fading late to run eighth and 3,65 lengths behind Noah From Goa in the Cape Guineas at his last start. That was just a fortnight ago, so he will be very fit and could enjoy the reversion back to his winning trip. Western Storm is the second Puller runner and the second of the Var progeny in the nine horse field. His last two starts as a 3yo have shown little and he failed to show when 7,85 lengths off Tar Heel in that frenetically fast Need For Speed Sprint. He is 2kgs better off here with Tar Heel and actually beat the Ramsden speedster as a 2yo at level weights.

Crazy Psycho Syd shed his maiden over the track and trip at his sixth start last time out. He bumped a few decent sorts along the way to that win and could be a quartet lurker off his 52kg galloping weight. Recent course and distance winner Astrapi comes in under major sufferance and looks to have it all to do. The son of Mogok put a winning performance together at his seventh start when beating Five Star Rock just over three weeks ago. He is not exposed at feature level and will need to improve lengths (and more lengths) to have a say in the finish.

Banker Seventh Plain looks to strip a fitter horse and with a top rider in the saddle he is set to provide an exotic bet banker option for many. Illuminator, Tar Heel and Ernie should chase him home.

NHA AGM Barking Up The Wrong Tree? A proposal that the National Horseracing Authority of SA assist in the collection of overdue vet fees is just one of the interesting items up for discussion at the regulatory body’s AGM next month. There has already been some mixed reaction to the notice on our website. AGM Notice: Notice is hereby given that the One Hundred and Thirty Third Annual General Meeting of Members will be held at the offices of The National Horseracing Authority, Turf Club Street, Turffontein, on Wednesday, 20 January 2016, at 14H30.

The meeting is being held to transact the following business: To consider and confirm the Minutes of the Annual General Meeting of Members, held on Monday, 12 January 2015. To consider the Report of the Chairman of the National Board of Directors for the year ended 31 July 2015. To receive and consider the audited Financial Statements of The National Horseracing Authority of Southern Africa and the Funds held in Trust for the period ended 31 July 2015. To appoint the Authority’s Auditors. To transact any business which may be transacted at an Annual General Meeting.

Proposal made by Mr L Goosen: It is proposed that Equine Herpes vaccinations are made compulsory for all racehorses in South Africa, from the age of three months. Proposal made by Mr L Goosen: It is proposed that all Local Conditions which guarantee runners in regions are scrapped. Proposal made by Dr R H Katzwinkel: It is proposed that the NHA assist in the collection of overdue veterinary fees for registered owners. The NHA has agreed to assist trainers in collecting outstanding training fees after being notified. I have been informed that the NHRA does not assist with the collection of unpaid accounts for veterinary services rendered to registered owners. I would like to request that the NHA reviews this decision and agrees to assist veterinarians working on registered owner’s horses if the accounts for veterinary services are unpaid after 60 days.

Motivation: As racetrack vets we are expected to apply the NHA rules. This includes vaccination protocols as well as the medication protocol, their wellbeing and soundness. Private veterinary services to the horse industry is essential for its continued survival. Since horse ownership is a luxury pastime, horse owners should be expected to settle their debts as part of the registration requirement of the NHA. Horses belonging to owners who are not paying their vet accounts are not being vaccinated for horse sickness or influenza as required by Jockey Club rules. This point has been raised with the NHA at a recent inquiry. It is common knowledge that the horse industry is debt ridden. The decision by the NHA to assist trainers in recovering outstanding debt should also be extended to the veterinarians servicing the industry. Vet Is Out Of Order I admire Dr Katzwinkel for trying to highlight the plight of Vets (If it is indeed a real difficulty) when it comes to nonpayment by racehorse owners. He also deserves credit for his tenacity in trying raising this issue through the backdoor, so to speak. In this regard, unless Vets hold colours or are employed by the NHA, they are not subject to the Constitution of the NHA or its Rules. I do not believe that the NHA should involve itself and assist veterinarians working on owner’s horses if the accounts for veterinary services are unpaid. It appears as if Dr Katzwinkel seeks that Vets obtain special treatment from the NHA because they are essential to “the survival of horseracing.” There is no doubt that Vets are essential but that does not give them the right to be treated differently. cog in the horseracing wheel is essential. Vets are obliged to keep specific registers by their own Society regarding the veterinary services rendered. To the best of my knowledge, Vets are not bound to follow the NHA rules unless the Veterinary Council has made it an obligation on the Vets to do so. I understand that should a Vet want to provide veterinary services to horses in the thoroughbred industry and the NHA requires him/her to fulfil certain obligations, then the Vet has a choice to comply or not to comply. Would Vets accept that they can only charge owners “medical veterinary rates” (i.e low and basic rates) determined by the NHA? I think not. Ii is out of order to use an alleged luxury pastime (which it is not for countless people) as a reason why the NHA should become

involved in this issue. It is not the function of the NHA to undertake “collections” for any person other than the NHA. I know of no creditor who does not know what to do if he is not paid. If there is such a creditor, I want his services. Brett Maselle via www.sportingpost.co.za comments

Gr3 CHRISTMAS HANDICAP at Greyville last Saturday

T

Trainer Dean Kannemeyer put the cherry on top of a superb 2015 out of his permanent Summerveld satellite base when Fred Crabbia’s It Is Written stormed home to win the R250 000 Gr3 Christmas Handicap at a mixed polytrack-turf meeting at Greyville on Boxing Day.

he Vodacom Durban July winning combination of Kannemeyer and jockey Stuart Randolph were back on their favourite hunting ground and put what looked like a decent challenge of local handicappers to the sword, after enjoying a perfect passage from a 1 draw in the mile handicap contest. After the enthusiastic 9yo Royal Zulu Warrior had set a decent gallop in the well subscribed feature , the race for glory was on down the home straight and any one of half the field looked to have a chance at the 300m marker. With Anton Marcus unleashing the consistent Stormy Eclipse down the wide outside from many lengths back, Stuart Randolph produced It Is Written down the inside as the son of Dynasty took the shortest route home. It Is Written ran on best to win well by 1,25 lengths in a time of 96,91 secs. Stormy Eclipse ran a courageous race after a slow start, to grab second, to give Dynasty a 1-2 in the race. The weak 15-4 favourite Saratoga Dancer maintained his consistency by staying on for third. A solid handicapper, It Is Written showed early promise and was being spoken about as a July candidate. His two KZN Champions Season victories culminated in a good win in the KZN Breeders 1600. He ran in the Consolation July where he finished 8,40 lengths behind Ultimate Dol-lar. Saturday’s win was his first this season after

three outings and he is a decent sort who looks most effective around a mile to 1800m. It was Kannemeyer’s second December feature winner for owner Fred Crabbia, after Captain Alfredo had clinched top honours in the Listed Southeaster Sprint at Kenilworth on 5 December. It Is Written was bred by Keivan Stud and is a son of last season’s Equus outstanding stallion Dynasty out of the one-time winning Northfields mare, Good Rapport. A R210 000 National Yearling Sale purchase, It Is Written has now won R535 925 in stakes and took his win tally to 7 with 2 places from 21 starts. He is the 32nd stakes winner for former Horse Of The Year Dynasty, whose son Fourth Estate won the same race back in 2014. Sire of last year’s R5.2 million record priced colt at the same sale, Dynasty has a superb draft of 14 lots on offer at next month’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale. They include a half brother to current star Silver Mountain and a colt bred on similar terms to Artie Schiller (Lot 42), a half brother to G2 Selangor Cup winner Hard Day’s Night (Lot 35), a filly out of Danehill Dancer’s superbly bred G3 winner Crimson Blossom (Lot 183), and a half brother to G1 winner Wavin’ Flag. Jockeys can achieve success without being hitched to a dominant yard. Keagan De Melo proved that and was the most succesful rider on the day with four well taken winners – for four different yards.

We’ve got to the end of another revolution around the sun. They say the unexamined life is not worth living and life’s rear view mirror occasionally shows up details that weren’t obvious at first glance, so before we launch headlong into 2016, I thought it would be fun to look back at the year that was. Of course, not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted, counts. However, the goal is to turn data into information and information into insight, so here goes.

January

An awkward NHA AGM, led by ousted Chairman Altus Joubert, revealed the cataclysmic rift between the operators and the regulator. The vote for a new Chairman was deferred after Rian du Plessis walked out, leaving no voting quorum. Pine Princess nearly missed the Paddock Stakes thanks to the State Vet. In the event, the laurels went to Inara, giving Grant van Niekerk his first Gr1 – Pine Princess finished 4th. However, LQP day belonged to Brett Crawford, when Futura romped home under Bernard Fayd’herbe, deputising for injured Glen Hatt. Futura made it a big race double, also winning the J&B Met. Glen Hatt announced his retirement. Sharon Patterson was shot outside her Randjes base, escaping with a broken arm. The 2015 Cape Premier Sale saw a new sales record when Maine Chance’s Dynasty colt was knocked down for R5.2 million. A few days later, Markus Jooste’s R4,5 million CTS buy, Brutal Force won the R1 million Sales race. Mike de Kock chalked his 100th Gr1 win in the Cape Flying Championship and Mauritzfontein lost champion sire Fort Wood.

February

Igugu safely produced her first foal – a filly by Dansili. The abuse of cobalt came under the spotlight in Australia. Shared Belief beat California Chrome comprehensively in the San Antonio Stakes and 19-time Champion jump jockey Tony McCoy announced his retirement. Peter de Beyer’s homebred Siren’s Call purposely avoided the Cape classics in favour of chasing the CTS Sales cheque and duly won the R2,5 million Book 2 Sales Race. However, she proved herself a classy sort winning the first leg of the Triple Tiara. Smanjemanje, who finished 2nd by a whisker in the 2012 Durban July, was sent out for a non-black type R100k feature over 1400m at Flamingo Park. He finished 8th, 16.25 lengths off. Yogas Govender left Plattner Racing to strike out on his own. Computaform moved to a ‘new look’ format, much to punters’ dismay. SA

Champion Horse Chestnut died aged 19.

March

While Mubtaahij won the Al Bastakiya, SA runners drew a blank on Super Saturday, with Vercingetorix doing a suspensory in the Jebel Hatta and retiring to Maine Chance Farms’ stallion roster. Having installed Ken Truter as WC representative on the NHA Board, cricket man Andy O’Connor was announced NHA Chairman. Dave Mollett resumed presenting duties after his knee replacement and in a shock move, Futura moved to Snaith Racing. Turffontein’s Classic Day saw an on-form Sean Tarry taking the Jacaranda handicap, Man O’War sprint, the colts’ Classic and a beautifully judged ride by Striker clinched the second leg of the Triple Tiara for Siren’s Call. On World Cup Night, Mike de Kock won the UAE Derby with Mubtaahij. The Dubai World Cup was won by Prince Bishop, with US challenger, California Chrome second. The Bookmaker / Tellytrack saga continued with KZN Bookmakers lodging complaints with ICASA and the Competition Commission. Buller Benton passed away after a short struggle with cancer.

April

The first July entries were announced and Gold Circle widened the track to accommodate 18 runners. CTS hosted its inaugural Select Sale at Emperors Palace on 18 April, 4 days ahead of the BSA National Sale. The NYS saw a new SA record price for a filly, when Mike Rattray went to R4,75 million for Lammerskraal’s lot 221, Savannah Cat. Triple Tiara aspirations went up in smoke on Champions Day as Sirens’ Call finished the narrowest of margins 2nd to Pine Princess after throwing a shoe on her way to the start. Wylie Hall was vindicated in the President’s Champions Challenge and Sean Tarry took the SA Derby with Legal Eagle. The breeding industry saw the loss of Lowell Price and Leigh Southey.

May

The opening day of the KZN season proved eventful

when an ANC meeting hosted at the track resulted in toyitoyi-ing, forcing patrons to leave by a side gate. CTS fired another shot across the bows, scheduling a new 2yo sale on 7 August. Futura won on his Snaith debut, in a pinnacle plate at Greyville. Tsogo Sun sprint weekend delivered a Gr1 double for ‘Uncle Den’ with Seventh Plain in the Gold Medallion and Captain Of All in the Tsogo Sun Sprint. Entisaar won the Allan Robertson and Carry On Alice the City of Pietermaritzburg Fillies Sprint. Trouble brewed at the Vaal with persistent rumblings about the sand track. Operators announced a 1% stakes deduction to go towards grooms. Denzil Pillay resigned as NHA CEO with Colin Hall performing CE duties in the interim. The NHA published minutes of their 2015 AGM 6 months early! Louis The King fractured a sesamoid and retired from racing. Mike de Kock saddled Mubtaahij in the Kentucky Derby, which was won by American Pharoah.

June

Frankie Dettori won the Epsom Derby on Golden Horn and American Pharoah made Triple Crown dreams come true in the Belmont, while SA fans shouted Mubtaahij home for 4th. Legislate won the ‘Duel of the Dynasty’s’ in the Rising Sun Gold Challenge. Ronnie Sheehan’s Captain Chaos won the Cape Nursery, Lucinda Woodruff saddled her first winner at Kenilworth and Wylie Hall retired to take up stud duties at Cheveley Stud. The NHA announced fee increases, including a foal registration fee hike to R1 700. Stan Elley announced his retirement from racing at the end of the season. Dolf Maeder, Mike McLachlan and Deon Visser also step down. Kevin Shea announced retirement from riding and the industry was shocked when Paul Lafferty was diagnosed with cancer. Retired jockey Gerrit Basson passed away of a heart attack and Newmarket GM, Jeff Moffett died of lung failure at the end of June.

July

Craig Peters called his 30th July. Maine Chance entered into breeding legend,

producing the first 3 past the post, but there was controversy as Power King clinched victory on objection over Punta Arenas. Punta owner Butch Watson-Smith passed away a few days later. Captain Of All bowed out on a high in the Mercury Sprint and retired to stud at Klawervlei. Sean Cormack was injured at Greyville on fallen runner, Zacharias. Drakenstein Stud acquired Kingsbarns, a Gr1 winning son of Galileo. Robin Bruss resigned from the NHA. The announcement of two new sales races worth R1 million each was not enough to rally support and BSA cancelled their 2015 R2R sale. Adverse weather forced the postponement of the Gold Cup “Super Saturday” meeting to 1 August, causing the racing programme to be reshuffled across the country. Pat Shaw won a 2nd Singapore Derby with Quechua and SAP became the new sponsor of the Emerald Cup. Patrick Davis resigned and Phum announced the end of the Vaal sand. Corne Spies was named Zimbabwean Champion Trainer, Ascot Stud lost sire Sail From Seattle and Kimberley trainer Vernon Rugg lost his battle with cancer.

August

The carding of Magical Trip at Scottsville on caused an ownership dispute. The NHA ruled in favour of new owner, E Hughes and the filly finished 4th under Anthony Delpech. The RA decree to calculate Cape awards by the national, rather than regional log courted controversy. Mike Bass fell seriously ill. CTS held their inaugural 2yo Cape sale at Durbanville with the sales topper reaching R260k. BSA’s National 2yo Sale sales topper went for R1,1 million. The Equus Awards saw Futura crowned Horse of the Year, Sean Tarry Champion Trainer, Gavin Lerena Champion Jockey, Markus & Ingrid Jooste champion owners and Klawervlei Champion Breeders. BSA’s R360 microchip levy drew heavy criticism and was retracted swiftly. Clyde Basel replaced Patrick Davis as Racing Executive. The President’s Champions Challenge purse was raised to R4 million and the Charity Mile to R1 million. The RA announced all Phum trainers’ stakes / acceptance fees are to be paid to Kenilworth Racing, discounts for early payments were withdrawn and arrears over 60 days will have noms suspended. ‘S’manga-gate’ was finally settled with a R75k fine. An NHA investigation into Sean Tarry’s role in the matter was branded a ‘witch hunt’ by Robert Bloomberg. Furore

erupted over Piere Strydom’s ride on Dublin Rebel at Turffontein, resulting in an NHA enquiry.

September

One could be forgiven for thinking it was April when the first of the month saw racing delayed at Kenilworth due to a broken axle on a bank of starting stalls. With only one bank of 8 stalls available for the remainder of the day, racing continued using the NRB elimination procedure. Despite a public apology for the Dublin Rebel ride, Striker received a 90 day suspension, which he subsequently appealed. Tarry was cleared of wrong doing in ‘Smanga-gate’, earning a call from Robert Bloomberg for the NHA to get its house in order. Unbelievable Chad won his maiden at the second time of asking for Olympic swimmer, Chad le Clos. Deputy Jud won the SAP Supreme Cup. Duke of Marmalade’s daughter, Simple Verse, won Doncaster’s St Leger. Demoted to 2nd after an enquiry, she was later reinstated. Plattner Racing appointed Andre Nel as new trainer and Karl Neisius was booked off for 6 weeks with a back injury. Kenilworth Racing’s letter urging trainers to fill fields saw the reinstatement of draws after acceptances as well as changes to the scratchings period. July winning trainer Brian Cherry died after suffering a stroke and Rhona Beck passed away

October

The GGB turned down Phum’s license amendment application. Brian Finch was appointed to the Phum board. CTS’ Inanda Ready To Run Sale saw serious money paid for imports with a joint top price of R2 million for the sales topping colt and filly. The Vaal hosted its last sand meeting on 29 October. Piere Strydom and Lyle Anderson faced a civil claim over the Dublin Rebel debacle, but the case was dismissed. Pointed questions from owner Steve Reid elicited some response from the RA, who said they were ‘keen to engage’ - in private. NHA confirmed a total of 18 lab positives prohibited substances this year. The R2.5 mil CTS Ready To Run Cup was won by Champagne Haze and Andrew Fortune was fined R5k for using the F-word in his post race interview. Senior jockey, Gerrit Schlechter was sidelined due to injury and Gift Funeka, the first black jockey to ride in the July – passed away.

November

Phum’s High Court application to set aside the GGB’s October interim order was dismissed with costs. The NHA shortened the epistaxis suspension period from 90

to 60 days for a trial period of 1 year. Gary Player turned 80. Hassen Adams delivered a presentation on ‘potential upgrades’ to Kenilworth racing, including polytrack at Durbanville. The SA jockey international caused a storm – again. Pat Shaw won a 3rd Singapore Gold Cup with Cooptado. The Green Point Stakes was relegated from a WFA to a conditions contest, with all Gr2 and lesser features standardised across all racing jurisdictions. CTS launched its ‘day of dreams’, moving the Investec Derby to 23 January to sit alongside their million dollar race. CTS announced a new mare sale to be held at Highlands on 10 June 2016. Geoff Woodruff had another Summer Cup triumph, saddling the first two past the post. Karl Neisius announced his retirement and Muzi Yeni celebrated his 1000th career winner.

December

Phum granted leave to appeal the High Court’s 6 November decision. The DA waded in on the KZN Gaming and Betting Amendment Bill. Gold Circle appointed a new Chairperson, Dr Phumla Mnganga. The RA held their AGM, although there has been no news or reports of what happened. The NHA published rule changes, along with notices of its 2016 AGM and SGM, proposing sweeping Constitutional changes. Strydom’s appeal succeeded and his suspension was reduced to 25 days. Jarred Samuel’s fall at Greyville on 4 December sparked controversy about race day safety procedures. Silver Mountain won the Cape Fillies Guineas by 5 lengths, but fell just short of Noah From Goa in the colts’ race. Candice Robinson announced that she is taking over the reins at Mike Bass Racing. Gavin Lerena won the Hong Kong’s Longines International Jockey Challenge. Cold As Ice won on her second UK outing at Chelmsford. PE trainer Mitch Wiese gave up training, as did Dominic Zaki. Phumelela and Arena Racing Company concluded a landmark deal, ensuring SA racing will be broadcast to the UK and Ireland until the end of 2022. Phumelela acquired a 50% interest in Supabets. Cartier announced sponsorship for 2016 Queen’s Plate, Trevor Denman announced his retirement, Greg Cheyne was injured at Kenilworth, breaking his foot in 3 places and Anne Upton turned 80. As we turn the final page on 2015 and prepare to start the process again on Friday, may I wish you all a very happy, prosperous and above all, interesting 2016.

On New Year’s Eve in 2000 we raced for R40 000 in a maiden race at Clairwood and the average house price in SA was R271 000. Today we race for a shade over double that stake and the average house price has grown to R 1 275 000. What does it all mean?

Magic Man Pay Pal Joao Moreira’s voracious appetite for victory showed no signs of abating at Sha Tin on Sunday, with the star jockey feasting on no less than six winners on the 11-race card, including three for trainer John Size.

Cheers AT

After 44 years of broadcasting, Queensland racecaller Alan Thomas, affectionately known as ‘AT’, hung up his binoculars at the Gold Coast on Boxing Day. It was a trip back to where it all began at the age of 18 for a man that has become part of the fabric of racing in the sunshine state.

Farewell Fuji Pensioned stallion Fuji Kiseki, sire of a number of good runners in Japan and elsewhere, including four champions, has died at the age of 23 at Shadai Farm. From the first crop of Sunday Silence and bred by Shadai Farm, Fuji Kiseki sired Sun Classique, the Mike Bass-trained South African champion 3-year-old filly of 2007.

Horse-racing aside, debt is debt, and over the ages the wealthy and super-rich have notoriously been the slowest payer. So says the articulate William Milkovitch on www.sportingpost. co.za comments in a distant reference to a Vet suggesting that owning horses is a luxury pastime.

Fathers & Sons 48 year old Glyn Schofield had his first ride in 9 years in Hong Kong last Wednesday after being asked by the HKJC to be available, while on holiday. Chad and Glyn Schofield will be only the second father and son to hold a jockey’s licence simultaneously in Hong Kong’s professional racing era. Tony Cruz’s father Johnny still had a licence in the first year of Tony’s apprenticeship.

Gould As Gold

Jockey Teaque Gould has ridden 3 winners in the past 2 Fairview meetings. That is a major strike rate improvement on his 1 win in November, 3 in October, a blank in September and 2 wins in August. Now let’s hope he smiles for a change in the post-race interviews.

Making A Mint

A trainer was giving last minute instructions to the jockey and slipped something into the horse’s mouth just as a stipe walked by. “What was that?” inquired the official. “Oh nothing” said the trainer, “just a polo”. He offered one to the stipe and had one himself. After the suspicious stipe had left the trainer continued with his instructions “Just keep on the rail. You are on a certainty. The only thing that could possibly pass you down the home straight is either the stipe or me”.

Eat Your Tweet

The Stipes are always making news but this will go down as the penalty to remember in 2015. Jockey Cathy Gannon received a £290 fine for tweeting a picture of the stomach-churning food on offer to jockeys at Newbury. The public outrage that followed proved that we can all sympathise with dodgy racecourse grub.

Domination

Betting turnovers are under pressure and even as the Magic Man sliced through the first eight Sha Tin races with his five wins, the day’s numbers were ultimately down by $117 million year on year or 8.67 per cent to continue the recent trend. “Sometimes, one rider can be just too dominant on a day and it works against you,” said one club official.

Weight Mystery “Not My Fault,” says Jockey

I

State Of The Union was disqualified from second place in Lingfield’s concluding handicap on Monday after his rider Kieren Fox weighed in 3lb light in circumstances that could not be explained.

t was accepted Fox had weighed out with with his lead cloth, a sizeable leather pouch that sits underneath the saddle, and that he handed it to trainer Lee Carter intact with the rest of his tack. However, it was missing when he weighed in. A search was conducted of the track itself, of the stable yard where Carter saddled State Of The Union, of the short walk from the winner’s enclosure to the weighing room and even of the wheelie bin into which the used number cloths are placed before being sent to the laundry. However, no clue was found, leaving the stewards bound under the current rules to find both Fox and Carter in breach, since no blame could be apportioned. 'The rules need changing' Fox was livid at being stood down for two days (January 11 and 12) and called for the rules to be amended. He said: “The rules need changing. It was there when I weighed out and handed the saddle over. It’s not there now and I don’t know where it is, but how can it possibly be my fault? What am I supposed to have done with it?” Carter, who was fined £500, said: “It’s never happened before. I saddled him in the stable yard, which is where I saddle all of mine, and it must have come off in the race, although Kieren never felt it go.” www.racingpost.com

Robin Scott

Swinging The Pendulum With a recent winner for Mogok in Hong Kong and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the KZN Breeders Awards, we chat to breeding legend, Robin Scott. The KZN Breeders Newsletter recently ran a notice that Scott Bros are offering 30 Two Year Olds ready to go into training. Besides progeny of Scott Bros stallions, the draft includes progeny by Kahal, Curved Ball, Kildonan, King Of Kings and King’s Chapel. There is no formal auction, they are all for sale directly off the farm.

The Scott Bros story The Scott Bros are from Irish stock, with their father hailing from Belfast and their mother also from Northern Ireland. The Scott Bros story has its roots buried in the sands of Isipingo beach, where Robin and boyhood friend George Rowles galloped George’s father’s racehorses across the beach and took part at the local gymkhanas. At the age of 22, with some financial assistance from his mother, Robin opened the first Scotts shoe store at the bottom of Berea Road in Durban. Brother Des joined in running the retail business which flourished into a national chain comprising 120 shoe and clothing stores, four shoe factories and three clothing factories. Brother Neville was a farmer, who worked for the Oppenheimer’s dairy in White River.

Racetrack success Robin and Des had a number of horses in training and the distinctive Scott livery of black, white maltese cross, red sleeves and white cap became a firm fixture in winner’s enclosures across the country. “Devon Air was my favourite horse to race,” remembers Robin. “We bought her in the UK, brought her over here and she won three Grade 1 races – the Greyville 1900, the July and the Gold Cup – in three months. The best horses I raced were Jungle Class and Bold West; both were multiple Grade 1 winners trained by Herman Brown.” Another to carry their silks with distinction was Spanish Pool and they had a particularly close and successful association with Terrance Millard, to whom they entrusted the likes of Sunera, Prontisimo and July winning, Devon Air and Ilustrador.

Highdown Stud It wasn’t long before Robin started acquiring mares, which he kept with John Rowles, George Rowles’ brother. In 1967, the dairy farm across from Ivanhoe

came up for sale and the brothers snapped it up, enlisting the help of brother Neville to run it for them. Although they continued the dairy for a while, the lure of breeding soon became too strong, so the cows went and the breeding operation started in earnest. “When Des, Neville and I came into the bloodstock business everyone called themselves by their surnames – Birch Bros, for example,” explains Robin. “I think it’s more significant than saying Highdown Stud.” After travelling extensively to study the best stud farms across the world, the Scott Bros got to work. Neville built all the infrastructure and planted all the trees, and based the stables and farm buildings on the best of what he saw on his travels. “This farm is uniquely built in that everything is central to the stud office,” says Robin proudly. “The workshops, the stallions, the offices and stable blocks are all within easy reach.”

of Lenore, purchased from Archie Dell. She produced Leta (grandam of Steiger) and several generations on, The Apache. Also included were Baccarat (grandam of All The Aces), Night Jar (dam of Rise And Rule), Arctic Sweep (dam of High Frequency, Forever Amber; grandam of Goldenflo, great grandam of Foverflo and Flobayou), Rhine Maiden (dam of Pilsener), Elegant Miss (grandam of Chiffon Drive, great grandam of Basic Instinct and Heat of the Moment), Faenza (dam of Finney) and a number of imports including Ofa (dam of Politician) and the dams of La Fabulous, Teal and Ipi Tombe.

John Slade worked for Scott Bros early in his career. “George Rowles recommended him because he liked the look of John’s foals at the sales. I had a look at the foals, agreed with George and offered him the job. John is responsible for a lot of the trees in our paddocks. He asked if it would be possible to plant trees for shade for the horses – he did quite a lot of the horticulture here. John employed Tim (Bootsma – now succeeding John at Maine Chance), then Tim worked for us for another 10 years,” explains Robin. “Both those chaps now have top jobs and you could recommend them to anyone, anywhere in the world. They’re very good at what they do.”

“Ofa was purchased from a sale in Kentucky and was the most expensive broodmare to be brought to South Africa at the time. Our great

History The first stallions to stand at Highdown were Kimberly Kid and the imported Ambiopoise. With a policy of only breeding from high quality mares, the original broodmare band consisted of 30 mares, most of which are still active in the stud book and include the likes

While there have been numerous breeding highlights over the years, Politician was an early and obvious standout who came along after only 6 years in business. However, Politician very nearly didn’t happen. It’s a well-worn story, but one that has lost nothing in the re-telling.

friend Eppie Nelson used to help with our pedigrees and matings and he suggested the mating to Oligarchy. Neville had a fit, because Oligarchy was defunct at the time. He asked why he had to put a mare of Ofa’s calibre to one of the worst stallions in the country! But we did it and got Politician, who won eleven Grade 1 races. We were lucky. You can go a whole lifetime in the breeding industry and never have a champion,” he muses. “Politician only sold for R5,250, which is proof for anyone that buys a cheap horse, that he has a chance as good as anyone else.” Politician may have put the Scott Bros on the map, but with the help of champions sires Jungle Cove and Foveros among others, there have been many subsequent successes. They were also responsible for breeding Arctic Cove and Jungle Rock and more recent stars Eton Square, Orbison, Meadow Magic, The Apache and recent Gold Cup winner, Wild One. As the family fortunes have waxed and waned over the years, in 1990 Robin took a decision to sell Highdown, holding a number of dispersal sales, including many of the stud’s top broodmares. He then had a change of heart and sold his Berea home instead, moving to Nottingham Road to take over the running of the farm, where he has been ever since. Regarding the stock dispersal earlier this year, Robin confirms that that was Des’ stock. “None of us are getting any younger and this sort of thing happens to everyone eventually. Chris Saunders had to sell his farm, our neighbour George Rowles has got out of racing – we’ll all eventually have to do the same

if there’s no-one to continue the business. Des sold about 40 mares - we’ve still got 150 on the farm. We’re just going through breeding season now, getting them back in foal, etc. I’m not saying we won’t be dispersing and selling our farm in future, I guess it’s just a matter of seeing how things go at that particular time.”

Good value Highdown stock is usually value for money. “We do well with Mogok progeny at the sales,” says Robin. He’s popular because he suits the chaps who don’t have the funds to pay for the Western Winters.” Funds or not, Mogok has had more international success than most stallions standing in SA, with Gr1 and Gr2 winners in Dubai and America such as Gypsy’s Warming and The Apache. His Gr1 winning son Orbison, was sent to Dubai, but sadly injury forced his return and he was unraced in the UAE. Meteor Mike is a five time winner in Singapore and Mogok has recently scored in Hong Kong with Monsieur Mogok. “From my point of view, there are very few stallions in the country that are as well bred as Mogok,” offers Robin. “He is by Storm Cat, he’s a half brother to Machiavellian and his third dam is Natalma, the dam of Northern Dancer. As far as I’m concerned, in my lifetime there has never been a better progenitor than Northern Dancer. You can bring all the other stallions like Mr Prospector and the rest, but there’s no-one quite like him. He’s been the greatest influence on the breed in my time. You can imagine that when they sent Mogok’s dam to Storm Cat, the service fee was about $450k no return. That’s how good his sire line is, you know what I mean? And that’s the sort of pedigree he’s got,” he says warmly. “It was fortuitous that we got Mogok from the Niarchos family on a sale in France. A bloodstock agent who’s a friend of ours phoned my brother and said ‘do you want the best bred stallion in Europe?’ Des said of course he wanted him, but wouldn’t be able to afford him. The agent said he’d never raced and he thought he could get him for a decent price. It doesn’t matter to me if a horse hasn’t raced. I prefer a horse that hasn’t raced with good pedigree, to a horse with a Gr1 win and no pedigree, because the genetics aren’t there to make the success.” “He’s really done us proud. He’s produced 2 ARCSA award winners, multiple Gr1 winners, his performance overseas has been fantastic. He’s done the job as far as I’m concerned, but he doesn’t get the recognition. I don’t

know why, but he doesn’t. As far as we’re concerned, he’s been a great servant to us and still is.”

Stallion roster Of the rest of the stallion roster, Robin says, “Miesque’s Approval was the best horse to race in his year. He was the best grass horse in America, he won the Breeders’ Cup Mile and he’s an Eclipse winner. He’s done us proud. His progeny run very well on the poly surface and he was the 2nd leading sire last year. He’s very good. He gets winners all the time, but we haven’t had a very big winner from him yet. He’s had Gr2’s and so on, but no big winners. But it’ll come. He’s doing very well.” “Now we’ve got Crusade, who’s a Middle Park Stakes winner in England, which is their major 2yo race. He’s a Natal Breeders Syndicated horse, and they’re giving him support because they own shares – you always support the company you own shares in. He’s a beautiful looking horse and a lovely stallion. He’s had 100 mares a year for the last few seasons, which augers well and indicates the popularity of the horse. His foals are very nice indeed and I think he’s going to be popular at the sales.” “Eightfold Path came into the country at the same time and he’s absolutely magnificent. He’s by Giant’s Causeway, the leading sire in the world in terms of stakes winners. His dam won 5 Gr1 races, which is simply unheard of. She won every major race in France including the French Guineas and the French Oaks and we’re so blessed to have this wonderful pedigree. Eightfold Path belongs to a chap in Mainland China who bought him with a view to breeding here and taking horses back to China when racing opens there eventually.”

Renewed optimism Although the Cape has been the breeding power house for a number of years, there is a definite feeling of renewed optimism and energy in the KZN ranks. Robin concurs. “It’s like a pendulum this breeding game. You do well for a bit and then you don’t and then of course, the thing swings back. KZN has certainly got the stallions to make the process swing back to us and it will. It’s a phenomenon of the business and you’ve just got to wait your turn.” Anyone interested in the Highdown draft can view them on the KZN Breeders website, or contact Robin directly either by phone on 082 495 4920 or by email at scottbros@worldonline.co.za

On Cue For A Big Payday Winning jockey incurs wrath of race stewards

T

Cue Card made a late charge to edge out long-time leader Vautour and win the King George VI Chase at Kempton on Saturday at the fourth time of asking.

he nine-year-old (92) looked beaten at the final fence but dug deep under Paddy Brennan for victory. Vautour and Ruby Walsh had been at the head of the field for much of the three-mile test of stamina. The 15-8 favourite Don Cossack fell with two fences to go while well in contention and Al Ferof finished third. Two-time winner Silviniaco Conti was pulled up after a disappointing run. Cue Card, trained by Colin Tizzard, underwent surgery on a trapped epiglottis in February and has been in superb form this season with wins in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby and Haydock’s Betfair Chase. This success puts him in line for a £1m bonus on offer to the winner of the Betfair Chase, the King George and then the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. Vautour, bidding to become the first Irish-trained winner since Kicking King in 2005, looked the more likely to triumph as they turned for home but a jumping error at the second last gave Cue Card a chance. The pair fought it out to the line with Cue Card getting his nose in front in the final couple of strides to win by a head with Al Ferof third for the third year in succession, this time for Dan Skelton.

Cue Card wins the King George VI Chase

What they said

“It’s the best feeling of my whole career,” said Brennan. “I can’t take it in. I’ve beaten one of the best horses in training and beaten one of the best jockeys I’ve ever ridden against. My wife and son watching at home will be so proud. “For people that say he

doesn’t stay, he stayed right to the line to get there.” Tizzard added: “Nowadays he’s a completely different horse, he might not look as if he’s going very well but he has that left for the end. It’s fantastic. “He’s been a great horse for five or six seasons now. Going to the last, if he’d met it on

a good stride he’d have won easier. “We’ll see how he is, but he looks like a Gold Cup horse now, whether he races again [before Cheltenham] I don’t know, he’s had a hard race and was all out.” Vautour’s trainer Willie Mullins said it appeared that a lack of stamina cost his horse. “He did everything right, bar the last 20 yards,” he said. “He didn’t jump the last as efficiently as he could have, but it was a very brave run, as it was from the winner. I don’t know if his stamina gave out, but it probably looks like that.”

But…

Paddy Brennan was fined £4,200 and banned for 11 days for excessive use of the whip in winning on Cue Card. And Ruby Walsh also fell foul of the officials, picking up a two-day whip ban. www.bbc.co.uk

Lizzie – The Real McCoy! Lizzie Kelly has become the first female jockey to win a Grade One jumps race in Britain after guiding favourite Tea for Two to victory in the Kauto Star Novice Chase at Kempton on Saturday. KELLY was always well placed on the 9-4 shot, trained by her stepfather Nick Williams and owned by her mother Jane. “I’m delighted to do it on this horse. He showed what he is worth today,” the

22-year-old told Channel 4. “This has been a long time in the planning and it is some feeling.” Tea for Two jumped superbly with Kelly giving him an excellent ride and the pair stayed on strongly to defeat

Southfield Royale in their 14th outing together. Kelly had nearly landed a Grade One win in France last month when Aubusson was narrowly beaten by Thousand Stars. www.bbc.co.uk

New Kid on the Block

First For New Sire

The stallion was credited with his fourth individual Feature race winner in little more than a month when Lord Tattler stormed home to capture the Gr3 Peninsula Handicap over 1800m at Milnerton on 3 January. Lord Tattler represents the second of Bush Telegraph’s five crops, and his win follows on the recent big race victories of London News, Cape Hunt and Western Telex. New Stallion For Ascot Stud Rose and Ashley Parker of Ascot Stud in PE have acquired a new stallion to stand alongside Al Mufti. Newcomer Kilconnel, imported from Ireland, is a son of Mr Prospector and a half brother to three Gr1 winners. The grey stallion is out of the mare Balidaress, who has an outstanding stud record. Balideress is the dam of 8 winners, including Irish and English 2yo champion Park Appeal (by Ahonoora), Irish 3yo champion filly Alydaress (by Alydar), and of Gr1 placed Desirable (by Lord Gayle) who is the dam of champion 2yo UK filly Shadayid. Desirable had been sold for one million Guineas at the end of her 3yo career in 1984. Kilconnel is a winner of 4 races at 3 and 4 in Ireland, and will stand his first season at Ascot Stud in 1996.

Time For Action There has never been any doubt that the Mike Bass colt Counter Action is virtually the equal of any member of the powerful 1991 foal crop, and success in the Queen’s Plate proved the point yet again. This 1600m Weight For Age contest is one of the jewels in the South African racing crown, and it almost invariably requires a horse of real class to win it.

T

he latest renewal was never going to be any different, with the likes of National Emblem, Bushmanland, Golden Globe and sprint king Flobayou included in a field which boasted no fewer than eight individual Gr1 winners even after the late scratching of Eli’s Truth.

shade Bushmanland out of second place. National Emblem was a short head behind Bushmanland in third, and a similar distance in front of La Fabulous. Flobayou almost certainly failed to stay the trip, for he was beaten a long way from home and even some early traffic difficulties are probably not enough to explain his lacklustre performance. He’ll no doubt stick to the sprints from now on.

Easy Pace

No To Met

The race was run at no great speed early, with first Centenarian and then Golden Globe showing the way to Bushmanland and Counter Action, while National Emblem was beautifully poised just off the leaders. Bushmanland took command soon after turning for home and last season’s Cape Guineas winner looked for a long way as though he would land the honours. National Emblem was in hot pursuit, but could never quite get his nose in front of James Lightheart’s runner, while Flobayou went absolutely nowhere in midfield. The picture changed inside the last 100m, however, with Counter Action flying up between horses to lead in the dying strides and Eldoriza coming home like a rocket on the outside to

Connections of horses entered for the J&B Met will rest a little easier knowing that they won’t have to contend with the Queen’s Plate winner come January 27th. It is almost an unwritten rule that the horse who captures the Queen’s Plate has a go at the big Cape summer double, but Counter Action won’t be trying to following the hoofprints of Empress Club or Mark Anthony. This year’s Met falls within the Muslim holy month and Counter Action’s owner Ismail Patel does not allow his horse to race during that time. Ironically, it was for the very same reason that Counter Action (unsuccessfully) contested the Met as a three-yearold last season, instead of the more appropriate Cape Derby, one week later.

Queen’s Plate day saw young Cape trainer Joe Ramsden scored his first career win (be it a very narrow one) with Salamis, a R40,000 National Sale purchase in a maiden juvenile plate over 1000m. The chestnut filly, a full sister by Foveros to Pelagos, and a half sister to Henrietta Fair, was steered to victory by Glen Hatt.

What A Breeze Al Mufti confirmed his reputation as one of the best young sires around when Bertie Hayden’s charge Beat The Breeze won the 1600m Flamboyant Stakes at Greyville on New Year’s Day with Muis Roberts in the irons. The result did nothing to change the view that the Ascot Stud resident is a much better sire of fillies than he is of colts, for Beat The Breeze is his fourth individual Stakes winner and all four have been of the female persuasion.

Sporting Start Freshman sire Sportsworld made the best possible start to his career at stud when his first runner Roving Ambassador was a 2.75 length debut winner at Milnerton on 3 January. The eightyear-old stallion, who stands at Daytona Stud for a fee of R6000, has 28 juveniles to represent him in his first crop.

Much travelled sire Badger Land had his first South African winner when Yankee Lass made a successful debut over 1000m at Arlington on 29 December. Alan Greeff’s filly is from the first crop of Badger Land, who has been commuting between Graham Beck’s Maine Chance Farms locally and the same owner’s Gainesway Farm in Kentucky since 1992, thus doing stallion duty in both the northern breeding season and the southern. This may seem unusual, but the movement of stallions between Australia and the Northern hemisphere has become quite common in the last few years. The talented son of Codex was a talented racehorse, winning five races up to 1800m between the age of two and three, including the Gr1 Flamingo Stakes as well as a Gr2 and a Gr3 event. Retired to stud in the USA in 1988, the 13-year-old stallion’s progeny have included dual Gr2 winner Diamond Duo and a pair of Gr3 scorers. His South African service fee was pegged at R12,000 and he has no fewer than 56 two-yearolds to represent him in his first local crop.

Tattle-Tale Bush Telegraph’s premature demise at the age of nine back in 1993 is proving to be a greater loss with almost every passing week.

T

While Highlands Farm is home to many top broodmares and Gr1 performers, there can be no doubt that the wonderful Our Table Mountain ranks among their finest matrons.

he daughter of Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus was a classy race mare whose six wins included the Listed Olympic Duel Stakes and Our Table Mountain won from 1200-1600m. Our Table Mountain, whose half-brother is former Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Mile winner and successful US sire Artie Schiller, has proven even more successful at stud. Her first four foals have all won and they include the G1 performers Careful Hiker (by Spectrum) and Helderberg Blue (by Jet Master). The latter has won four times and ran a creditable third in last year’s G1 J&B Met when beaten just under three lengths by subsequent

Horse Of The Year Futura. Helderberg Blue looks on track for another tilt at the Met, having finished a smart third to stable mate Paterfamilias last time out in the G2 Premier Trophy.

Star Filly

Our Table Mountain’s 3yo is none other than star filly Silver Mountain, a winner of four of just six outings to date. Silver Mountain’s victories included a five length romp in the G1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas and a 1.5 length win (from a wide draw) in the G2 Choice Carries Fillies Championship, and she currently ranks as head and shoulders as the best 3yo filly seen out this season. A daughter of Silvano, Silver Mountain currently

ranks 1st on the log for the inaugural CTS $1 000 000 race to be run this January. Pleasingly, Our Table Mountain (who has a Dynasty colt on offer at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale in January) has tested in foal to Drakenstein Stud’s world class young sire Duke Of Marmalade. The latter had a fantastic year in 2015 with his runners including four individual classic winners, notable champion and G1 Ladbrokes St Leger heroine Simple Verse, G1 IDEE 146th Deutsches Derby winner Nutan and G1 Prix de Diane Longines (French Oaks) winner Star Of Seville. The latter will visit outstanding sire Deep Impact in her first year at stud in 2016. www.capebreeders.co.za

New Stallion Off The Mark - BOLD SILVANO

Bold & Besotted

A

The 2010 Vodacom Durban July winner Bold Silvano was the first son of champion sire Silvano to go to stud in South Africa and opened the batting for this term’s first crop sires when his first ever runner stormed home to win the opening event at Fairview on Monday. top-class winner of 7 races from 1100m to 2200m, Bold Silvano stands in the Eastern Cape at the place of his birth – Ascot Stud. He is out of the four-time winning Al Mufti mare, Bold

Saffron. His first winner will be a major shout of confidence for his three yearlings who come up for sale over the next few weeks. The beautifully bred sire has a single lot (# 143) on offer at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale and also has two lots (#111/#113) on offer at the Val De Vie Yearling Sale in February. His winning daughter Besotted, trained by Gavin Smith, beat five opponents to win the 800m Maiden Juvenile Plate under Warren Kennedy on Monday. The Riyo Stud bred filly, a 2015 National 2yo Sale graduate, produced a quick return on her R50 000 purchase price when she beat O Tamara by 0,25 lengths in a time of 45,72 secs. She was fancied and went off second favourite at 22-10. Besotted is out of the Point Given mare Right Call – whose relatives include Gr1 Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Aptitude and his very close relative, US Champion Slew O’Gold, as well as

Gr1 Belmont Stakes winner and former local sire Coastal. Bold Silvano was a top class two-year-old, who won two of his four outings as a juvenile, including the G3 Champion Juvenile Cup. South Africa’s Equus Champion Middle Distance Horse campaigned in Dubai for Mike de Kock and won the Gr3 Al Maktoum Challenge, where he accounted for the outstanding international performers Interaction, Gr1 Dubai Duty Free hero Al Shemali, $2 000 000 earner Gitano Hernando, and Gr1 Racing Post Trophy winner Crowded House. He stands at Ascot Stud for a fee of ZAR15 000.

Equine artist and qualified pilot Caryn Fisher has an impressive horseracing pedigree. The former assistant to Mike Azzie, Clodagh Shaw, Dennis Bosch and Charles Laird has ridden eight amateur race winners, worked internationally for Godolphin and looked after Breeders Cup horses.

aryn is settled in the beautiful town of Hoesdpruit and happily married with three children these days. It was a typical racing reminisce back to a winning ride on Top Cat at Clairwood on Boxing Day 1998 that got the thought processes reflecting back on a colourful and happy career. She is now known as Mrs Bowie and admits readily that she misses her nineteen years in the horseracing industry. “My equine art provides an outlet to feed my love of the horse and I keep a finger on the pulse of the game from a distance,” she says, while explaining that little in life provides as much excitement and pleasure as horses. “I did my Pilot’s license at Piarco International Airport in Trinidad but even flying an aeroplane is not as exciting as riding in a race!”

In The Saddle Caryn tried to get her jockey’s license but it was in the early days when they were just taking the first girls into the SA Jockey Academy. “I tried to go to Australia but bush tracks seemed to be the only option,” she says with a resigned air of mature contentment. Caryn’s horseracing career began when she left school. She did a horsemastership course with Mitch Hansen and then went to do equine physiotherapy with Winks Green. “It was at Winks where I started riding work. I then moved as assistant manager at Kingswood Stud where I learnt to deliver foals, tube, stitch and all sorts of exciting things, yearling sales preparation, breaking and pretraining.” Robin Smith came from Zimbabwe to Nottingham Road to train and Caryn started riding work early in the morning before the day on the stud began. “I spent a year in Australia, doing yearling prep on Arrowfield stud, then the Inglis Easter Sales and then became a rider for Alan Bell at Randwick in Sydney.”

On The Move In 1999 she went to the United States and worked for Irish trainer Niall o’ Callaghan, based at Churchill Downs but travelled to Lexington and then Fairgrounds in New

Top Cat Orleans for the winter. “In 2002 at the end of the winter season at Summerveld with Charles Laird I said I was keen to go to work in Dubai. After a few phone-calls to Mickey Goss the job at Godolphin was mine. I worked for them for 6 years, travelling between Dubai, Belmont Park,New York and Newmarket, UK. The most famous horse I rode and went to New York with was Imperial Gesture who ran twice on Breeders Cup Days, placing both times,” she says with a fond pride. In 2008 the family moved with their two children to Trinidad and Tobago. “That signalled the end of my racing career and my third baby was born there in 2009.” The Bowies boast an international family! With their youngest holding a Trinidad and Tobago passport, their first child was born in 2005 in the UK and their second in Dubai in 2007. “I call them my Pom, my Arab and my Rasta,” she laughs. The family moved to Hoedspruit in 2010 so that the children could attend a private bush school on the wildlife estate where they reside. “My entire life I have loved art, and studied it. I am a Graphic Designer and love wildlife. I am focusing on Equine art and doing wildlife photography, which I manipulate to get out the ordinary effects. I do commissions of horses and market my prints which are printed on high quality canvas,” she says. Cheyne On Injury List

H

Avontuur-sponsored Cape champion jockey Greg Cheyne is the latest addition to the casualty list of local riders after he broke a foot in three places when his mount reared and unseated him prior to the first race at Kenilworth on Sunday.

e joins Jarred Samuel, Charles Ndlovu and Donavan Mansour on the sick list. Cheyne was riding the fancied 2yo Mount Keith, when the Glen Kotzen-trained colt dropped the 39 year old Cape-based jockey. He was rushed to hospital after being stabilised at the start by the oncourse medical personnel. Delays were kept to a minimum and the 4×4 ambulance was despatched to the start to cover the first race, while Cheyne was whisked away. X-rays revealed that he had suffered a triple break and the presence of bone fragments led to him being admitted overnight by the attending doctor.

He will be going for a CT scan this week to determine the road forward in terms of corrective surgery. Third on the SA jockeys’ log last season, the three-times East Cape champion jockey made his International Jockeys Challenge debut last month. Cheyne has won six Gr1 races in South Africa, including the Mercury Sprint on Captain Of All last term, as well as the 2009 Vodacom Durban July on Big City Life, and the 2008 Gold Cup on Desert Links. He has ridden in Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Germany, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Macau, winning the Gr1 Malaysia Sprint and the Malaysian International Jockeys Challenge. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Following last week’s re-published Racing Record essay on Star Effort, here’s one on another filly who beat the colts - Empress Club, born just one year after Star Effort. The essay highlights her 4yo career.

mpress Club - rated 126 Empress Club 4 b.f. by Farnesio – Elysee (El Gran Capitan); won 15 [this season '93) 1000; 1600; 2000; 1600;] Racing Record 1993

History is what historians make it. It isn’t necessarily a truthful account of events, merely a reflection of the way socially influential people see them. Clearly, the intellectual quality of these influential voices has great influence on the way future generations perceive the recorded events and background. Sadly, it seems rather likely that racing fans of the future will never be able to fully appreciate the quality of South African horses of the Eighties and Nineties. At least they won’t if the official ARCSA awards are used as the yardstick. The ‘official’ Horse of the Year Awards were hijacked in the mid-Eighties by the Association of Racing Clubs of South Africa (ARCSA). Staunch supporters of the notion that great minds think by consensus, ARCSA made up a selection of what it perceived to be knowledgeable racing people to cast their votes. Unfortunately the ARCSA selection was neither representative nor knowledgeable. It resulted in Horse of the Year blunders such as Right Prerogative, the selection of Royal Chalice over Mark Anthony, and the non-election of Model Man. In recent years ARCSA made some token attempts to redress the imbalance noted by its critics, but never wholeheartedly or with purpose, and always authoritatively and without consultation. The committee spirit persists at the expense of knowledge and understanding. This was never more visible than in 1993, when the worst blunders of all were committed, not only in the Horse of the Year category – the titles for Stayer of the Year and Sprinter of the Year were equally poor in its final outcome. Although Horse of the Year awards will presumably cause controversy anywhere in the world, the glaring injustices done to some of this year’s South African losers put serious doubts as to the value of the local awards. Clearly, the fact that no one in particular will accept the responsibility for the final selection (or is remotely capable of motivating it) speaks volumes. Worst still, South Africa’s official handicappers are

still incapable of producing season’s-end Classifications, so there isn’t even an ‘official’ yardstick to measure the ARCSA awards by. It is high time that both ARCSA and the Jockey Club took their respective responsibilities to racing’s intellectual heritage seriously. ARCSA in terms of instituting meaningful awards, which reflect selections that can be motivated and defended, before another party takes the bull by the horns. And the Jockey Club (whose sub committee on handicapping came up empty handed after no less than three years of apparently fruitless debate) in terms of education, in order to be able to align itself with internationally accepted handicapping methods. The choice of Flaming Rock as Horse of the Year couldn’t have happened to a gamer, more consistent performer – but he wasn’t the best by a long shot. Empress Club, earlier in the year billed as ‘the wonder filly’, beat Flaming Rock pointless on two of the three occasions they met. The Argentinian filly’s most convincing win was in the Gr1 Queens Plate, run at weightfor-age at the height of the Cape summer season, which she won by five lengths from the Irish-bred son of Ballad Rock. Empress Club won three Gr1’s and had a seasonal rating of 126 (Timeform comparable), against a single Gr1 win for Flaming Rock (TFR 123). There really was no comparison. Empress Club started the season with what was generally regarded as a warmup sprint at Durbanville, where she met a choice selection of seasoned sprinters over 1000m. The magnitude of her task was reflected in her starting price, with the bookmakers freely offering 4/1 about the top weight. Vying for favouritism were the previous season’s top sprint filly Marie Galante (16/10) and Taban, who would be given title of Sprinter of the Year at the end of the season in progress. Empress Club had been set to give 3 kilos to the filly, and half a kilo more to Taban. Marie Galante was in front from the break, and came into the straight with Taban

at her quarters. Empress Club raced some 3 lengths back in third, moving smoothly, then drew level with the champion sprinters a furlong out to win going away by a length and a half. For good measure, Empress Club also broke the (hand-timed) course record to show that this win was no fluke. Two weeks later came the Gr1 Queen’s Plate. Run at weight-for-age, it was surprising that as many as fifteen opponents had the courage to face her at the start of the 1600m event at Kenilworth. Empress Club shortened in the betting to 5/10, with Flaming Rock (9/2) and Spanish Galliard (8/1) the only others in single figures. Flaming Rock’s stable mate King of the Strip set a useful pace, with the fancied horses in midfield. Some 400m from home the Empress gathered her skirts and with breathtaking acceleration took some three lengths on her field in the space of 200m. Well clear a furlong out, she extended her lead to 3.5 lengths over Flaming Rock at the finish. Spanish Galliard finished a modest third, beaten six lengths. The win caused clouds of chalkdust around bookmaker’s boards, where the filly was priced up at odds-on for the Gr1 J&B Met three weeks later. She didn’t disappoint her supporters, winning by 2 lengths from Flaming Rock, Secret Rites and Spanish Galliard. Let’s pause for a minute and put the Empress’ first three runs of the season into perspective. She began by beating two of the country’s top sprinters, including the subsequent ARCSA Sprinter of the Year, over 1000m, in record breaking time, giving weight all round. She followed up by making hacks of the country’s best milers, at weight-for-age, including amongst her scalps the one of the subsequent ARCSA Horse of the Year. And at her third start she did the same effective demolishing job on the best middle distance racers, beating Flaming Rock over 2000m under identical weight conditions as in the Queen’s Plate. It’s worth noting that subsequent Gr1 Mainstay winner Secret Rites ran a well beaten third. Empress Club reappeared on the Rand some five weeks later, in the Gr1 First National 1600m over a mile at Turffontein. The race was run

Empress Club winning the 1993 Gr1 J&B Met at weight-for-age, which gave good reason to the bookmaker fraternity to price her up at 1/6 – and concentrate on bets for who would run second. The Empress cruised in, easing up by almost three lengths from Please Be True and Queens Gold, adversaries who might as well have raced on a different planet. Despite her achievements, 4/10 seemed rather short odds on the Empress in the Gr1 Administrators Cup, a 2000m handicap run in alternate years at Turffontein and Gosforth Park, where the filly had been set to carry top weight of 58 kilos. Her connections had flown former champion jockey Felix Coetzee out from Hong Kong to take the ride as regular jockey Marcus was suspended. Incredulously, the Empress finished eighth, beaten six lengths by Cardinal Fury, who’d made all the running in what was announced as a new race record time. The record came as no surprise, as this was the first time ever that the race had been run at the Gosforth Park track! The Jockey Club opened an official inquiry in to the events surrounding the Empress’ failure when rumours surfaced that all hadn’t been well with the filly’s blood picture before the race. The inquiry centred on Rule 70.1 which (broadly) deals with running on merit. The inquiry board heard expert evidence three weeks after the race and accepted that the filly’s blood picture had been within normal parameters

given her previous blood picture history. It was now April, and the travelling feature race circus moved to Natal for the winter season. Opening early 5/2 favourite for the Rothmans July, Empress Club drifted in the betting to 10/1 and more as rumours concerning her wellbeing kept on surfacing. Her connections did little to defuse the situation, refusing to commit themselves about whether she would run right up to the final declaration stage. But once she was known to be a certain runner, the money poured on and Empress Club ended up 3/1 joint favourite together with stable companion Dancing Duel. She had been set to carry 58 kilos, joint top weight with Flaming Rock, who therefore was 2.5 kilos better off for a beating of less than 3 lengths in the J&B Met. Coming from well off the pace, Empress Club again didn’t show her kick, but even so was beaten less than 2 lengths in a bunched finish by Dancing Duel. Flaming Rock reproduced their J&B Met running. Indeed, at the weights (few pay attention to the effect of weights in the July handicap) Flaming Rock and Empress Club were the two horses that gave the best performance, with only winner Dancing Duel anywhere near them in terms of ability. Empress Club found herself unable to reverse the ‘beaten favourite’ trend in the Gr1 Mainstay handicap over 1800m at Clairwood. She topped the boards at 18/10,

:

with Cape Guineas and Derby winner Eli’s Truth next at 7/2, and Flaming Rock easy to back at 11/2. Flaming Rock carried 58 kilos, half more than Empress Club. Close to the pace throughout, Empress Club completely failed to show her acceleration. She finished ninth, five lengths behind winner Secret Rites, who was a mere nose ahead of unlucky loser Flaming Rock. Empress Club, an athletic, muscular, quite leggy individual, has shown her best form over a mile. Her major asset is her ability to quicken in a few strides, the hallmark of class. Despite her relative failures later in the season, when seemingly all wasn’t well with her health, she showed herself superior as a fouryear-old to the best sprinters, the best milers, and the best middle distance horses in the land. That the title of Horse of the Year was denied her was a travesty. Early in the new season it was announced that Empress Club would continue her career in the US. Assuming that she regains her best form after what will be an unreasonably lengthy period of quarantine, it seems likely that the Empress as a 5yo will make her presence felt in the highest circles. The Americans are sure to treat her with respect – Argentinian mares, after all, have an excellent record on the West-coast. We’ll follow her exploits with great interest. (Millard) (rated 126)

The Year That Was 2015 Triple Crown winners, Epsom Derby dazzlers and a trifecta in the Vodacom Durban July – 2015 had a lot to celebrate

January

February

The first month of the year saw Fort Wood and his progeny make headlines in South Africa. One of Fort Wood’s greatest sons Dynasty was in the news thanks to his brilliant son Futura, who won the Cape’s two most famous races, the GR1 J&B Met and GR1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. Futura was subsequently named Horse Of The Year. Dynasty made more news that month when a colt sired by him fetched a new SA record (R5.2 million) at the Cape Premier Yearling Sale. Sadly that month, the death was announced of Fort Wood, Sadler’s Wells and Fall Aspen’s Gr1 winning son – a champion sire and broodmare sire in this country, who left behind 15 G1 winners including the above mentioned Dynasty and legendary champion, Horse Chestnut.

One of the grudge matches of the year takes place in North America, where Shared Belief, an unlucky loser of the Gr1 Breeders Cup Classic, takes on popular Horse Of The Year California Chrome. It is Shared Belief who prevails comfortably over his chestnut rival to take his score line to nine wins from just ten outings. Sadly, after winning the Gr1 Santa Anita Handicap by an effortless four and a quarter lengths, Shared Belief breaks down badly next time out. Tragically, he never races again and dies in December of colic. Sad end to a hugely talented athlete!

March Dubai World Cup night, on March 28th, saw a host of notable performances – including a stunning eight length demolition by the Mike

The progeny on sale are by a wide variety of stallions

Scott Bros – Quality Offering The Scott Bros once again are offering 30 Two Year Olds, ready for training, for sale directly from the farm.

O

ne of the horses for sale is two year old colt Final Cup, a Mogok half-brother to Durban July winner Hunting Tower and a full-brother to The Lonsdale, who won at Greyville recently for trainer Doug Campbell. From 11 starts, The Lonsdale has placed seven times and won once. The progeny on sale are by a wide variety of stallions besides Scott Bros’ own leading polytrack sire Miesque’s Approval, Mogok, The Sheik, Overlord and Atso – including a lovely big colt by Kahal out of a Danehill Dancer mare, and progeny by Curved Ball, Kildonan, King Of Kings and King’s Chapel. The sale also includes a handsome two year old Overlord colt named Karioke Kelly – a full brother to winner Lord Kelly and Promissory, a graduate of this farm sale earlier this year who has placed twice from both of his starts. Contact the Scott Brothers for more details.

daughter Simple Verse wins the Gr1 Ladbrokes St Leger. The first filly since User Friendly to prevail in the Doncaster classic, Simple Verse finishes first past the post, is disqualified only to be later re-instated as the winner. She is her sire’s fourth classic winner of the year and later goes on to win the Gr1 Qipco British Champion Fillies &Mares Stakes at Ascot. Simple Verse will bid to emulate her sire and become a King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner in 2016.

de Kock trained Mubtaahij in the Gr2 UAE Derby. The son of Dubawi will later take his place in the Gr1 Belmont Stakes. Another superb win on the night came in the form of the French galloper Solow, who puts four and a quarter lengths between himself and runner up (and Prix Du Jockey Club hero) The Grey Gatsby in the newly named Gr1 Dubai Turf. The gelding will go on to win his four races (all Gr1) in a row, culminating in a win in the Gr1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot. North America lost a leading light when dual US Champion Sire Smart Strike died at the ripe old age of 23. His offspring included champions Curlin, English Channel and Lookin At Lucky – all of whom tasted success as sires themselves this year. In Australia, unbeaten Medaglia D’Oro colt Vancouver wins the world’s richest 2yo race – the Gr1 Golden Slipper.

April Champions Day at Turffontein saw a number of smart victories. Subsequent Equus Champion 2YO Filly Entisaar landed the Gr2 SA Fillies Nursery, continuing the fine run of form enjoyed by Australian-breds in South Africa, while disqualified July “winner” Wylie Hall gained some well-deserved reward for his controversial July loss with a win in the Gr1 President’s Champion Challenge, and the impressive Legal Eagle outgamed subsequent Equus Champion and stable mate French Navy to win the Gr1 SA Derby by three lengths.

July

American Pharoah justifies favouritism in the Kentucky Derby, when beating Firing Line by a length. The son of Pioneerof The Nile will go on to become the first US Triple Crown winner since in 1978 when he adds wins in both the Gr1 Preakness Stakes and Gr1 Belmont Stakes. The champion will confirm his place among the all-time greats at the end of the year at Keeneland. At Newmarket, jockey Ryan Moore enjoys a great Guineas double when his mounts Gleneagles and Legatissimo win the 2000 and 1000 Guineas respectively.

Once again controversy mars the running of South Africa’s most famed race – the Gr1 Vodacom Durban July when the Dean Kannemeyer trained Power King beats Punta Arenas into second, but bumps the runner up badly in the proceedings. Remarkably, the first three home were all bred by Maine Chance Farms with all of Power King, Punta Arenas and Tellina being sired by the farm’s champion sire Silvano.

June Frankie Dettori enjoys his second English Derby win when he scores on Cape Cross colt Golden Horn in the Investec Derby. While Golden Horn is dispatched favourite for the Epsom classic, the Investec Oaks sees a shock result when Aidan O’Brien trained Fastnet Rock filly Qualify wins the Oaks at odds of 50-1. While Qualify fails to feature in the Irish Derby next time out, Golden Horn goes from strength to strength winning the Eclipse Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes and Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe before suffering a surprise loss in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.

August Captain Al picks up his first general sires title, while Futura is named Horse Of The Year at South Africa’s Equus Awards. Gavin Lerena and Sean Tarry are the country’s champion jockey and trainer respectively. The Gold Cup, controversially run on the first day of the new season, goes to former runner up Wild One, who sadly dies just shortly after winning South Africa’s premier staying race. In the USA, American Pharoah suffers only the second defeat of his career when beaten by Keen Ice in the Gr1 Travers Stakes.

September Drakenstein Stud’s new sire Duke Of Marmalade makes more headlines when his

The Breeders Cup is held at Keeneland for the first time. American Pharoah lives up to expectations when winning the Gr1 Breeders Cup Classic by six and a half lengths, with subsequent Gr1 winners Effinex and Tonalist behind him. The great horse breaks the track record in the process and he now retires to Ashford Stud for a 2016 fee of $200 000.

November Michelle Payne makes history when becoming the first female ride to win the Gr1 Melbourne Cup when scoring on 100-1 shot Prince Of Penzance. Sadly, three time runner up Red Cadeaux breaks down in running and is later euthanized. Trainer Geoff Woodruff ’s success in the Gr1 Sansui Summer Cup as he saddles Master Sabina and Deo Juvente to fill the first two placings.

December Silvano’s great year continues when daughter Silver Mountain outclasses her rivals to land the G1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas by five lengths. However the filly, a clear leader of her generation thus far, is beaten into fourth by Gr2 Investec Dingaans winner Noah From Goa in the G1 Grand Parade Cape Guineas two weeks later.

Scottsville 20th December Surprisingly the fastest of the three charge ran on strongly in the closing 1200m races in Pietermaritzburg on stages and got up late to deny the front Sunday was the MR77 Handicap running ANSWERINGENESIS. The not so lucky last (races 9 & 10 were in which the recent maiden winner HUMIDOR (7/2 into 16/10) showed abandoned) was a MR80 Handicap over good improvement. Now a winner of 1600m and here we saw a comfortable two from three, Tony Rivalland’s charge victory for the former sand campaigner made all. He led by just three quarters of OLYMPIC BOLT. Racing off a mark a length for most of the journey before some fourteen points lower than his extending his advantage to three under a rating on that surface, the 8/1 shot was strong ride from Anton Marcus over the always handy. He took up the running as they approached the 400m marker and final 400m. The faster of the two 1000m races was won well by a length and three quarters the bill topping pinnacle stakes won by from the similarly unfancied SIR EARL BARBOSA. Sent off at the prohibitive GREY. After being a little slow into odds of 3/10, Dennis Drier’s charge was stride, CAT IN COMMAND ran on soon positioned close to the speed. He well from the back to fill third position put his head in front 150m out and went in this race. on to extend his winning sequence to TITBITS four very comfortably by a length and LITTLEBLACKNUMBER made it three three quarters. from seven over the course and distance The first juvenile race of the KZN when winning the MR90 Handicap over season had gotten proceedings underway 1200m. and quickest home here was the 7/2 shot ROB’S JEWEL. Fairview 21st December Four of the eight races at Monday’s poly track meeting were run over 1300m and the quickest home in these was PATAUDI in the MR64 Handicap. Soon positioned close to the speed, Justin Snaith’s charge put his head in front coming off the bend and won well by two and a quarter. In the slowest of the 1300m events, the girl’s maiden plate, we saw a smart performance from the Yvette Bremner trained CLASSIC DELIGHT. Sent off a well-supported favourite at 15/10, the daughter of Lecture could be sighted at the back of the ten turning for home. Once in the straight though she ran on best of all, and under a well judged ride from S’manga Khumalo she got up late to deny the second favourite HAIZI’S DAISY. The only other favourite on the card to oblige was the recent maiden winner FRATERNIZE in the MR63 Handicap over 2200m. Backed into 22/10 from 4/1 at the track, Pataudi’s stable companion was always in touch with the leaders. She put her head in front going through the 200m and won going away by a length and a quarter. A MR72 Handicap over 1600m brought proceedings to a close and in what proved to be a real thriller the lightly weighted 14/1 shot LAWS OF SUCCESSION registered his third career victory. The favourite CRUZCAMPO was the first to make a move

Kenilworth 22nd December The 3yo ROYAL BADGE was nibbled at (5/1 into 4/1) to win what proved to be the fastest of the three 1800m events on Tuesday, a MR80 Handicap, and he didn’t let down his supporters. Taken straight to the front by Donavan Mansour, the son of Go Deputy led by just half a length throughout. He found extra when challenged by BIANZINO over the final 200m and looked to have a little in hand. They also ran three races over 1400m and stopping the clock in the fastest time amongst these was TONYA in the MR66 affair. Sent off a strong favourite at 14/10, Vaughan Marshall’s charge raced fifth of the six for most of the journey. She quickened well at the top of the straight and won going away by a length and a half

after striking the front 150m from home. The remaining two races were staged over 1200m and comfortably the faster of these was the MR88 Handicap won by JOINERS ARMS. At the helm from pillar to post, the Greys Inn gelding kept on strongly at the business end of the race to beat the always handy BLACK TRACTOR by a half. TITBITS Racing for the first time since winning easily by three and a half on debut 15 months ago, the 5yo LOHNROMANCE was never really asked to race when winning the MR70 Handicap over 1200m by three. The 3yo NIGHTINGALE won the girl’s maiden plate over 1800m by a length and a quarter with some in hand.

On The Upgrade Greyville 23rd December This was the meeting originally scheduled to take place at Scottsville. Two maiden plates over 1200m got proceedings underway at Wednesday’s turf meeting and much the faster of these was the girl’s affair won by MISS BRODY. Swiftly guided over from a wide draw by Stuart Randolph, the always handy daughter of A P Answer didn’t find the clearest of passages when the race began in earnest. Once into stride though she quickened nicely, and won well by three quarters from the running on WIND SINGER (also poorly drawn). The faster of the two 1400m races was the maiden event in which we saw an impressive performance from the Paul Lafferty trained ROY’S AIR FORCE. Nibbled at on course into 33/10 from 4’s, the second favourite raced fifth for most of the journey. He quickened in very good style after switching

out for a run 300m from home and then striking the front 100m later he cruised clear to score by three and three quarters. Another 3yo to show very good improvement on this card was the recent maiden winner TEN GUN SALUTE when landing the MR87 Handicap over 2000m. Sent off third in the betting market at 9/2, the son of Henrythenavigator was soon up handy. He was ridden to lead early in the straight and had the rejuvenated GREAT RUMPUS well held by three and a quarter at the wire. TITBITS After being a little slow into stride, the 13/10 favourite SISTER COSMOS ran on well from the backend of midfield when runner up in the MR68 Handicap over 1000m. Racing green the lightly raced 3yo SILKEN ran on well from the backend of midfield when only beaten a neck in the maiden plate over 1600m.

and when getting his nose in front 200m out he looked to have done everything right. The always handy son of Jay Peg challenged strongly below the distance though, and got the verdict on the nod. TITBITS The 4yo THE CAPTAIN’S CAT ran on strongly from the backend of midfield when getting up 60m from home to win the novice 1200m going away.
