t is difficult to recall when last a new race-riding appie has attracted the amount of attention that has greeted the young man who only joined the SA Jockey Academy in January, and had his first professional ride only in the first week of this month. The former champion workrider rode his first professional winner on Blizzard Belle at Fairview on 18 March in an emotional

moment for the family – his Dad Carl is assistant to trainer Yvette Bremner and is also part owner of the SA 1000m record holding filly. All races are around the turn at Greyville and there was some consternation and puzzlement recently when Lyle was not allowed to ride at the Durban City venue. “Lyle has now fulfilled his qualifying rides and is allowed to ride experienced horses around the turn – by ‘experienced’ we refer

to a horse that has run a minimum of three times,” confirmed NHA KZN Stipe Derk Anderson on enquiry. Hewitson looks full value for his 4kg claim and although the gulf between workriders and jockeys is an enormous one, it can only be a matter of time before he starts reeling in the winners with regularity.

Scottsville 20th March A maiden juvenile plate over 1200m got anxious moments. There were four races run over proceedings underway in Pietermaritzburg on 1200m in total and the fastest of these was the girl’s Sunday and here we saw a very comfortable division of the maiden juvenile plate won by BLAZE victory for the most experienced runner in the OF MYSTERY. Allowed to ease out to 3/1 from 18/10 field OCEAN DRIVE SOUTH. Backed into in what was priced up as a boat race, Duncan Howells’ favouritism at the track (16/10 into 14/10), the charge also made all. She was challenged strongly by son of Warm White Night was soon at the head the 6/10 favourite FINAL JUDGEMENT over the of affairs. He was just a half-length clear going final 300m, but despite having the remainder some through the 500m and extended his advantage seven lengths adrift, she couldn’t get closer than a half to a length and three quarters without any at the wire. Lightly weighted QUEEN’S ADVANCE ran on strongly from off the pace when comfortably accounting for her six rivals in the MR89 Handicap over 1600m.

Fairview 21st March They raced on the poly track on Monday where three of the afternoon’s eight races were staged over 1900m. The fastest of these was the MR72 Handicap won by ALL THE BIDS. Soon positioned close to the speed, the Daring Bid gelding put his head in front 300m out. The front running VALMODE found extra when challenged though, and in a thrilling three way finish which also involved SKY FULL OF STARS, he only got the verdict by the narrowest of margins. Causing a major upset in the faster of the two 1300m events, a MR94 Handicap, was the veteran RUSSIAN MIG. Freely available at 20/1 on the off, Hekkie Srydom’s charge raced in the backend of midfield during the early part of the race. He quickened best of all at the top of the short home straight and under a well-judged ride from apprentice Kersley Ramsamy, he got up late to score by three quarters. On a card where five of the winners scored by no more than a neck, the biggest winning margin (just a length and three quarters) was recorded by VELVET VERONA in the MR77 Handicap over 1300m. A fluent winner over 1000m on turf just 72 hours earlier, Corne Spies’ charge made all. He was always in command and ran out a very comfortable winner.

More From The Front Turffontein Tuesday afternoon’s action took place on the inner track where the faster of the two 1000m races on my clock was the MR76 Handicap won by the speedy CATALUGA. Taken straight to the front by apprentice Eric Ngwane, the daughter of Fort Beluga was soon a length and a half clear. She kept up a healthy gallop throughout and just held on by a rapidly diminishing short head from the rank outsider of the nine horse party LAVENDER GIRL. Easily seven lengths off the pace coming off the strip, the runner up was flying at the finish. The faster of the two 1450m maiden plates that opened up proceedings was the work rider’s race won by TRULY. Another to win from the front,

22nd March Gavin Van Zyl’s charge was always clear and won without any anxious moments by a length and a half. A MR82 Handicap topped the bill and here we saw a smart performance from the lightly raced 3yo MILLA’S WORLD. Yet another to win from the front, Sean Tarry’s charge raced a length and a quarter clear for most of the journey. His biggest threat could be Dennis Bosch’ Cutting Edge, a consistent 3yo son of A P Answer, who was desperately unlucky last time to find the rampant Royal Armour in a galloping mood. Cutting Edge moved up like a winner there and with Anthony Delpech retaining the ride, he looks ready to win his third race.

Key To Success

Brian Wiid travels again with the smart 6yo National Key, who jumps from a decent gate in the hands of the improving Keagan De Melo. The son of National Assembly is very effective over the course and distance and may have just found the mile a touch too far when hanging under pressure late

in the race and beaten 0,35 length in a blanket finish behind Mumsy’s Jet. The gallant Mr Whatever has similar mileage on the clock to the Eudey topweight and is never too far off – while not looking like he can win again too soon. Tristan Godden takes 2,5kgs off his back and he can be expected to box for a place again.

Good Pace

Former PE galloper Insearchofthesun showed pace and won well against lesser last time. That was on the Greyville turf and his first success since his relocation. Warren Kennedy takes the reins again. Sean Tarry’s Silence Descends registered his last win over Wednesday’s track and trip but this is

much tougher and only his lightweight of 50kg appeals. He is 2,5kgs better off with National Key but has 3 lengths to make up on their last meeting. Charles Laird’s lightly raced top-form is a course and distance maiden winner and may need it after 13 weeks off. Bill Human pays a visit with his seasoned mare Caribbean Bay who brings her Kimberley form into the

equation here. She could be anything but has some big guns to silence.

It is a competitive race but we are siding with the improving youngster and the class. Cutting Edge and his senior Flyfirstclass look set to do battle with the superbly consistent National Key a likely joker in the pack.
