A change of tactics and headgear did the trick for the talented 4yo Pathfork gelding Royal Victory who finished with a wet sail to win the R90 000 non black-type PinkDrive Michaelmas Handicap at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday and reinforce his aspirations for a berth in the starting line-up for the R5 million Betway Summer Cup on 25 November.
The gelding started at 8-1 and held off the handily weighted Pirate Prince (8-1) by a head in a time of 115,75 secs.
A class act on his day, and just off the best as a 3yo, trainer Nathan Kotzen chose to drop the blinkers and instructed Calvin Habib to drop Royal Victory out at his first try at 1900m.
Addabar was quickening gradually, but it is difficult to see him having won the race, even with a clear passage.
The plan worked a charm and it was an emotional victory on a wonderful day in the fight against the scourge of breast cancer for part-owner Peter Victor, who lost his daughter to cancer eight years ago and had his own struggles against cancer last year. Peter travelled down from Johannesburg for the thrilling victory and will harbour great hopes of having his first serious Summer Cup candidate. Tried over a mile and below for much of his career, Royal Victory languished in the rear and came from last into the straight, showing courage as he took a tight gap down the inside rail.
Long-time pacemaker Cape Eagle (9-2) ran around a bit in the closing stages and appeared to hamper the 18-10 favourite Addabar, who was forced to check late and ran just out of the money.
Bred by Ambiance Stud, Royal Victory is by Ridgemont’s Distorted Humor stallion Pathfork, Ireland’s Champion 2YO Colt of 2010, and is out of the four-time winning Kahal mare, Kailani. An astute R90 000 buy off the National Yearling Sale, he has now won 3 races with 6 places from 14 starts for stakes of R761 250. The Hollywood Syndicate enjoyed a terrific day with three winners on the pink dominated afternoon. Richard Fourie also enjoyed a treble and chipped away at Muzi Yeni’s lead, making up two winners on the afternoon.

PATHFORK POWERS ON ‘What odds both Royal Victory and Main Defender will continue to keep their sire’s name up in lights this season?’

Royal Victory slips through down the rail with a sustained finish to win Sunday’s feature | Credit: Candiese Lenferna
We have said it before and will do so again, Ridgemont’s Sandown-based stallion Pathfork has largely flown under the radar his entire stud career, yet continues to make his presence felt. Numbers don’t lie, and in the first two weeks of October, this underrated son of Distorted Humor has sired seven individual winners, the most recent being Royal Victory, who regained the winning thread in the PinkDrive Michaelmas Handicap at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.
If not for the fact that it was run for the first time without Listed status, Royal Victory would have given his sire a quickfire stakes double, for his win came barely seven days after three-yearold Main Defender led his rivals a merry dance in Turffontein’s Gr2 Betway Joburg Spring Challenge to score a scintillating 6.50 length maiden stakes win. Lest we forget, Pathfork had already sired Listed East Cape Paddock Stakes winner And We Danced earlier this season. 18 OCTOBER 2023 | 13

Trained by Natie Kotzen, Royal Victory has always been a class act. He proved himself a rattling good juvenile when runner-up in both the Gr2 Golden Horseshoe and Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes.
came from off the pace to land the Michaelmas in a thrilling blanket finish. Co-owner Peter Victor, who travelled down from homebase Johannesburg, commented in the post-race interview: “We decided to try him over more ground and besides, he’s more mature now.”
He built on that fine juvenile form when travelling from his Summerveld base to finish third behind subsequent Gr1 SA Classic winner Anfields Rocket in the Gr3 Graham Beck Stakes Kotzen added that the Gr1 Summer Cup looks before showing his Joburg rivals a clean pair of a distinct possibility, which means Royal Victory heels to land the Gr3 Tony Ruffel Stakes by the could once again make the journey up the N3. best part of four lengths. and Empress Game, both of which broke their maidens in fine style. Royal Victory’s female line was also developed by Summerhill, who imported his Irish-bred third dam, Royal Relation. A daughter of Lord Gayle, she won five times and went on to become a prolific broodmare as the dam of nine winners from eleven foals. Significantly, she clicked with Summerhill’s champion stallion Northern Guest to produce Gr3 winner and Gr1 SA Derby runner-up Royal Tours and his Gr2/3-placed sibling Presidential Suite, whilst her Coastal daughter Coastal

A son of Kahal, he won the Gr2 Joburg Spring Challenge, ran third in the Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes as a juvenile, and split Vercingetorix and Capetown Noir in a thrilling three-way finish to the Gr1 Daily News 2000. As for Pathfork, he is quietly going about his business at Sandown and will be covering his 12th book of mares this season. “He’s doing so well and should get between 30 and 40 mares,” confirmed stud owner James Armitage. Sandile Khathi – horrific fall on Tuesday Credit: Pauline Herman
JOCKEY MEDICAL – SYSTEM IS FLAWED
NO COVER, NO RIDE! 18 | 18 OCTOBER 2023
v
In what has been an unrelated spate of accidents in recent weeks, Sandile Khathi is the latest jockey to fall victim to the omnipresent dangers associated with race-riding.
Private care, in contrast, can accommodate patients far more expeditiously and emergency treatment is prioritised according to the severity of the condition.
The accident, in which the journeyman rider fractured his clavicle, has also highlighted potential shortcomings in the supervision and oversight of the jockey medical care process.
A benefactor, who chooses to remain anonymous, stepped up to guarantee the deposit for Khathi’s admission to a private medical facility.
Khathi came down in the third race at Fairview on Tuesday when his mount Celtic Vixen clipped the heels of Gideon’s Daughter (Richard Fourie) and fell.
The generous racing man told the Sporting Post that it was intended as a gesture of goodwill to the hardworking jockey and his family, and for the better good of racing. He conceded at the same instance, that he was surprised to hear that jockeys can ride without medical cover.
Celtic Vixen was racing near the rear and ran onto the heels of Fourie’s mount, with both horse and rider hitting the poly as one in a perfect extension – literally in the blink of an eye. Immediately afterwards, the Montana Turnertrained filly apparently pulled up lame on the left fore.
Khathi was reported conscious and stable, with the possibility of concussion. But this is where an already unfortunate incident possibly goes further wrong. The official Stipes report advises that an investigation has been opened into whether the provisions of Rules 23.1; 23.2 and Appendix H have been met by Jockey Khathi following information received in relation to him being admitted to hospital. The Sporting Post has learnt that Khathi was apparently riding without valid medical cover, and some confusion arose in the ‘casevac’ process, with the possibility arising of him having to be treated in a government hospital. While Government hospitals provide a service, they often have backlogs at emergency centres.
While it is clearly the responsibility of every rider to ensure that he has medical cover, the National Horseracing Authority only verify the validity thereof on renewal of licences. The timing of that system surely creates the potential for a window of failure? Like countless South Africans, many jockeys are living under the pressures of the ever -spiralling costs of living, and the decision, if such arises, of whether to put a meal on the table or pay a medical aid premium, may not even be a question. A Fairview regular told the Sporting Post that the post accident next-of-kin referral is also not ideal, and that jockeys should not be riding on any racecourse without family contact details being readily available. A designated official should surely be assigned to deal properly with any information that needs to be disseminated. This was highlighted at a previous accident at the same centre. Let’s hope that Sandile recovers quickly, and that a solution can be found to improve the process for these professional sportsmen who put their lives on the line every time the gates fly open. Bottom line, no medical cover, no ride.

SUNDAY WHAT TO BUY?
It is now well documented that the 2023 CRS Ready to Run and Unbroken 2yo Sale has changed venue from Hollywoodbets Kenilworth to its former home at Hollywoodbets Durbanville. The Cape Racing Ready to Run & 2yo Unbroken Sales Race will be staged at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday, 21 October, with the Sale at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Sunday, 22 October. The move came about because of the renovations and ongoing work to uplift Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Racecourse, and Justin Vermaak, Racing Operations and Bloodstock Executive for Cape Racing, commented: “Going back to Hollywoodbets Durbanville for this Sale is sensible. The racecourse has a rich history and unique atmosphere, making it the perfect venue for this event. It was successful and popular in its traditional slot at the familiar old venue.
“Hollywoodbets Durbanville, with its atmosphere and rustic charm, will capture the same spirit as in years gone by. We look forward to enjoying the Sale’s festive spirit and welcoming buyers back to their old hunting ground.” Buyers are reminded that horses bought at the Bloodstock SA Sales and then resold at the RTR Sale in October will be eligible for two bonuses, the BSA R100 000 Bonus and the CRS R100 000 – therefore qualifying for R200 000 when they win their first Juvenile Races. For sale-related queries, please get in touch with Justin Vermaak (justin@caperacing.co.za) or Robyn Collyer (robyn@caperacing.co.za)

Julia Pilbeam’s top team has another draft of genuine quality at the 2023 Ready To Run and Two-Year-Old Unbroken Sale, to be staged at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Sunday. A cracking colt who has improved hand over fist during his preparation, I can’t wait to see his gallop on the day.” Lot 107: Unnamed c by Futura ex Cousin Liz “The first foal of Captain Al filly COUSIN LIZ (winner of the G3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery), she herself a half-sister to GIMME ONE NIGHT – this is a fantastic family. This colt is by Futura, a sire who is going from strength to strength. He’s an exciting colt with substance, excellent rein, and hindquarter, who uses himself well.” The Cape Racing Sales Ready To Run & Unbroken 2yo Sale will be held at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Sunday 22 October at 14h00. The gallops will be held at 09h00 on the same day.

JULIA ON RIDGEMONT’S FAB FIVE Ridgemont Stud will present 11 choice lots at the 2023 Cape Racing Ready To Run and Two-YearOld Unbroken Sale at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Sunday. Ridgemont’s Julia Kieswetter highlighted five two-year-olds she believes are desirable prospects, and shared her thoughts below:
Lot 58 Happy Wives (b f Canford Cliffs x Three Blue Cranes) “She is out of a Captain Al mare, a half-sister to Russian Sage. Happy Wives herself is a half-sister to the impressive Dynasty filly Happy Chance. She shares many similarities with her sister: she is very strong with a lovely, powerful hind end. She is levelheaded and will be early to the track. With these wonderful juvenile incentives, she will be a nice filly to buy as the return on investment will be quick.”
18 OCTOBER 2023 | 67
v
Lot 58 Happy Wives (b f Canford Cliffs x Three Blue Cranes) “Another exciting prospect by Canford Cliffs, Golden Rule is a striking second foal of the unforgettable G1-winning Visionaire mare, Takingthepeace. He is a strong colt that is a real head-turner. Beautifully balanced, he easily takes his work with an easy canter and nice scope. Certainly, one to watch.”
Lot 45 Under Wraps (gr f Danon Platina x Secret Society) “By Danon Platina, who is certainly firing on all cylinders, from the family of Biarritz and Outstanding Star, Under Wraps is a quick and punchy sprinting type that will be quick to the track. She is strong from her shoulder through to her hind quarter. She will hit the running out of the already proven mare Secret Society.” 68 |ground 18 OCTOBER 2023
v
Lot 4 Gondolaonthemolo (b f Lancaster Bomber x Dolomiti) “By the late Lancaster Bomber, she is a lovely filly with plenty of scope. Level-headed and easy to work with, she takes everything into her stride without a bother. She is improving daily in her work. The future will be very exciting for her.”
Lot 20 Comedy Club (b c Canford Cliffs – Joking) “Out of the Listed winning mare Joking, Comedy Club is the smart son of Canford Cliffs. An easy mover who is correct and balanced will be popular.”

NORMANDY – 34 YEARS ON AND READY TO WIN! This year marks 34 years since we first started taking two-year-olds to ready to run sales. The top-class sprinter Knife Edge was in that first draft, followed two years later by the Germiston November Handicap winner, Quick Wit. Normandy’s Oscar Foulkes writes that since then, their drafts have produced many graded stakes-winners, most recently the Equus Champion Sprinter, Rio Querari. Another recent Grade One-winning sprinter was Sergeant Hardy. A regular feature of our RTR drafts has been the presence of pinhooks – yearlings we bought for the purpose of resale on RTR. There are three Grade II winners on this list – Bishop’s Bounty, Wonderwall and Homely Girl. Four of the top 20 on the 2023 RTR Race log are from our 2022 draft, three of which are
pinhooks, including the log-topper, Tail of the Comet. The owners of these horses are taking advantage of the hard yards we’ve put in at various yearling sales. Our fourth representative on the top 20 is the smart prospect, Public Benefit. There wasn’t a bid for her when she was on the sale last year, which shows that there are opportunities throughout the catalogue! Our 2023 draft comprises 15 two-year-olds, representing many of South Africa’s leading stallions.

Lot 75 filly Meursault (Querari (GER) – Celigny (USA))
72 | 18 OCTOBER 2023
v
Normandy Stud Lot 14 colt Hospices de Beaune (Erupt (IRE) – Good Cause) The full-brother to Public Benefit, out of a halfsister to Crowd Pleaser, who was one of four graded stakes-winners from our 2015 RTR draft. He looks like a precocious type. ‘Double-dipper’: qualifies for BSA Juvenile Bonus as well. Lot 26 colt Worldly (One World – Lady Wylie) The three-parts brother to our Cape Flying Championship winner Sergeant Hardy. He’s an athletic colt, who looks like he could be an early sort. ‘Double-dipper’: qualifies for BSA Juvenile Bonus as well. Lot 35 filly Blowin in the Wind (Querari (GER) – Nordic Wind) The full-sister in blood to Rio Querari, and her dam is a full-sister to the multiple Graded stakes-winning Nordic Breeze. She moves beautifully, and looks speedy. Lot 39 colt Mister Speaker (Erupt (IRE) – Point of Order) This cracking colt exemplifies all of the reasons why we believe that Philanthropist mares are a ‘nick’ for Erupt (as if Public Benefit wasn’t already reason enough). It’s the family of one of our RTR stars, Cap Alright, tracing to our great mare Terpsichore. ‘Double-dipper’: qualifies for BSA Juvenile Bonus as well.
Lot 55 filly Sesame (Legislate – Tahini) This filly has numbers on her side, in the form of Legislate’s sensational strike rate. She also has family on her side, coming from the great Sun Lass female line. Our branch of it is through the Fillies Guineas winner, In Camera, who became the foundation mare for a disproportionate number of top-class race fillies. This filly looks primed to follow in their hoofprints. Lot 69 filly Quasikat (Quasillo (GER) – Yekaterina) The full-sister to Miss Putin, who placed third in the listed Devon Air even though she did her sesamoid in the running. This granddaughter of Sea the Stars from the close-up family of Mother Russia is every bit a racehorse. Lot 75 filly Meursault (Querari (GER) – Celigny (USA)) The full-sister to Champery, a top-class sprinter in her own right, who produced the Fillies Guineas winner, Chansonette. Celigny’s only other daughter at stud has also produced a stakes-winner. This is a top international family of Grade One winners, of which this filly is a worthy representative. She looks speedy.

Lot 3 filly Unnamed (Querari (GER) – Dieu Te Garde)
Lot 44 colt Grand Pavilion (Futura – Sea Point)
As a Querari filly, she has the ideal profile for collecting the two juvenile win bonuses. Her dam is a full-sister to the dam of the top-class Without Question. ‘Double-dipper’: qualifies for BSA Juvenile Bonus as well.
The half-brother to HWB Durban July winner, Winchester Mansion, as well as Grade I winner Sand and Sea. As a December foal he’s just going to get better and better. And, as a son of Futura, he’s likely to go any distance he’s asked. ‘Double-dipper’: qualifies for BSA Juvenile Bonus as well.
Lot 21 filly Julie’s Quest (Querari (GER) – Julie Doolittle) By multiple Champion 2YO Sire, Querari, from a classic (in all senses of the word) Mauritzfontein family. Dam has a 100% record. Lot 22 colt Ardabil (Danon Platina (JPN) – Kerdassa (IRE)) The only colt on the sale by new sensation Danon Platina. He’s from a top international family and he looks the part. ‘Double-dipper’: qualifies for BSA Juvenile Bonus as well. Lot 34 colt Unnamed (Legislate – Nordic Light) The half-brother to smart sprinter, Beerenberg, out of a half-sister to the dam of Rio Querari. He’s a very athletic colt, who looks like a sharp juvenile in the making. ‘Double-dipper’: qualifies for BSA Juvenile Bonus as well.
Lot 54 filly Unnamed (The United States (IRE) – Tagine) By top-class young stallion, The United States, out of a prolific mare. This filly’s extended tabulated pedigree has inbreeding patterns that will get pedigree buffs excited. ‘Double-dipper’: qualifies for BSA Juvenile Bonus as well.

Varsfontein Stud’s bang inform stallion Master Of My Fate, who has seven lots on Sunday’s sale, dominated proceedings at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Monday when the son of Jet Master was responsible for four winners on the eight-race card. Remarkably, the progeny of Master Of My Fate won races three, four, five and six on Monday. His first success on Monday came when the Justin Snaith trained Princess Izzy won the third race, the Cape Racing Sales Maiden Plate (F&M) (1400m), in convincing style. Sent off tote favourite, the three-year-old was given a fine, front-running ride by Grant Van Niekerk. Van Niekerk set a slow pace up front, which quickened up as the field turned for home. Princess Izzy kept finding in the closing stages and drew off to record a comfortable one-anda-half length maiden win, with another Master Of My Fate filly, Epikleros, finishing third. Bred by Varsfontein Stud, Princess Izzy was making the fourth start of her career with the filly having finished third and second in her two previous starts. Out of the What A Winter mare Destiny Dancer, Princess Izzy was a R650 000 buy from the 2022 August Two Year Old Sale. Master Of My Fate struck again in the very next race when his Candice Bass-Robinson trained

Lord Fyfield won the Gulf Racing Club Maiden Plate (1800m), beating his paternal half-brother Masterofallstorms into second place. Under Aldo Domeyer, the Master Of My Fate colt raced well off the pace early on, before powering home down the centre of the track to get up and win by half a length. Bred by Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud, three-year-old Lord Fyfield, who is due to be gelded, is out of the Seventh Rock mare Seventh Storm. His sire struck yet again when the flashy Master Of My Fate colt Avignon came with a strong late rattle, under Richard Fourie, to claim the Cape Turf Club Syndicates Maiden Plate (1800m) by three parts of a length. One of two winners for trainer Piet Botha on Monday, the three-yearold had finished third last time out. Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Avignon is out of the Var mare Var Countess and is thus bred on the same cross as G1 winning champion Tempting Fate. Master Of My Fate’s fourth and final success on Monday came when his well-bred daughter Fatal Gem ran out a convincing winner of the The Kings Club Maiden Plate (F and M) (1600m). Under Malesela Katjedi, the Brett Crawford trained three-year-old powered home down the centre of the course to get up and break her maiden by a length and three-quarters.

Marco van Rensburg – exciting new challenge | Credit: Pauline Herman
SA JOCKEY IS OFF TO DUBAI! ONE OF OUR BEST VALUE LIGHTWEIGHTS! The last time Marco van Rensburg was in the UAE he was holidaying and watching SA champion Victory Moon running third under Weichong Marwing behind Richard Mandella’s Pleasantly Perfect in the Dubai World Cup. Fast forward nineteen years, life’s changed a bit. Marco’s grown up and evolved professionally, and now he’s simply looking for a change of scenery to take his career to another level. Chatting to the Sporting Post just before he boarded an Emirates Airlines flight at OR Tambo International on Monday evening, the 40-year-old former SA Champion Apprentice, and certainly one of the best value lightweight riders in the country, said that
he was genuinely excited about his new Dubai challenge. “My good mate Zaan Thompson got me involved and it’s come at a time when I am yearning for a chance to see something different. I will be riding for the Mardood Racing stable and the M1 Racing stable. One needs new challenges and I feel fit and ready for what lies ahead,” chirped the talented and versatile rider, who is chasing a career 1200 winner milestone. 18 OCTOBER 2023 | 87
v
Asked how a genuine son of Africa, born on the banks of the Vaal River and a lover of a good old braai, would be adjusting to life in Dubai, the Grade 1 winning jockey smiles broadly. “Do you know that when others were half dreading the trip to the Northern Cape every Monday, I was looking forward to it. Heat and the desert are my kind of environment. I’d far rather be boiling hot than ice cold! And the adjustment shouldn’t be difficult – I have friends and colleagues there and I have ridden overseas previously,” he adds as he reflects back on his Mauritius stints, the last of which was in 2016. “Looking back now, I loved Flamingo Park. I’d go so far as to say it was my favourite track. No matter the weather, the conditions – the track handled it, and it ran true. There was never any kickback – it was a great surface. I wish they could have transferred the track to the Vaal!” he laughs.
88 | 18 OCTOBER 2023
An International Mauritian all- star young champion where he represented his country in 2002/3, Marco was Northern Cape champion Jockey for two seasons, and also rode in Zimbabwe where he won the Castle Tankard. One of his standout features is his never-saydie approach, seeming absence of fear, and a versatility and ability to judge pace on all surfaces – that’s from the emerald green turf of Hollywoodbets Greyville, to the diamond dustbowl sand of Kimberley, and the allweather at Fairview. Lucas Marthinus ‘Oublank’ van Rensburg was born on 18 April 1983 and grew up in Sasolburg. Always slight in stature, but as strong as an ox, he joined the SA Jockey Academy in 1998 alongside Chad Little, Tyron Langdon, Ralton Peters and Robert Fayd’herbe.
v
Marco rode his first winner for Dennis Bosch on Pearly Queen at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on 17 December 2000 and was to go on and pilot top horses in a sparkling career. He achieved an early Gr1 success in the SA Fillies Classic on Spiced Gold. Easily recognizable big names on his cv include Geoff Woodruff’s Zouaves who won the Gr2 Hawaii Stakes, subsequent Durban July winner Greys Inn for Mike de Kock, Charles Laird champion Hinterland, and then the gallant Azzie galloper Orpheus, with whom he had a special affinity, and on whom he won the Listed Sledgehammer. “I also won nine on Brother Jason for Cliffie Miller in Kimberley. He was a machine on the sand,” he adds enthusiastically. Marco is looking forward to getting a feel of the tracks before the new look Dubai Racing Club season commences on 10 November.
In line with Dubai’s fast-paced development and innovation, under the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, Dubai Racing Club has unveiled a new structure for the 2023-24 racing season. The season culminates on 8 March 2024 and comprises 14 meetings and precedes the $30.5million Dubai World Cup meeting on 30 March. The new season gives international trainers, jockeys and horses the chance to compete in Dubai for much longer than was previously the case. So Marco will find the competition red hot! Purses for the Dubai Racing Carnival 2023-2024 are up by the equivalent of R56 million – a 27% increase from the total for the 2022-23 season.

There will be three valuable feature race nights; starting in December (R24 million), then January (R50 million), and Super Saturday in March (R50 million); which brings the total purses for the three meetings to the equivalent of R124 million. The minimum prize money per non-stakes races is the equivalent of R825 000 – interestingly the same as pre-pandemic levels.
90 | 18 OCTOBER 2023
The flagship Dubai World Cup night brings the curtain down on the Dubai season and retains its enormous pool of prize money of US$30,5 million. “I will still be following the South African racing closely. I have many friends and top horses that I have been privileged to be associated with. Thanks for the chat,” he said as he dashed off to catch his flight.

Apache Fighter (Muzi Yeni) wins the Allez France Stakes at Turffontein | Credit: JC Photos
MAGNER MARE TAKES HOME THE ALLEZ FRANCE The 2400m Listed Java Stakes on Allied Steelrode – Onamission Charity Mile day in a fortnight from now could be next on the agenda for the free-striding mare Apache Fighter, who showed that she is back to her best with a smart win in the R150 000 Allez France Stakes at Turffontein on Saturday. Labelled as one of the better bets of the day, the daughter of The Apache was available at 28-10 and benefitted from a perfectly judged ride by national log-leader Muzi Yeni in the non black-type feature named in honour of the American-bred champion racehorse of the 1970’s. 92 | 18 OCTOBER 2023
A fairly one-paced mare with a big heart who easily stays the trip, Apache Fighter was allowed to lope along in second behind Opera Glass for the early stages. When the astute Gavin Lerena eased slightly and started playing a tactical cat-and-mouse game on the leader, Yeni drifted Apache Fighter to the outside and she powered on relentlessly as she galloped all the way to the line. Philasande Mxoli unleashed a powerful midfield challenge late on Quiet Rebellion (14-1), but a confident Yeni had a half-length to spare where it counted.
v
The winner clocked 142,40 secs for the 2200m. Opera Glass (25-2) did a lot of the donkey work and stayed on well a further 0,30 lengths back in third. Bred by Stewart Robinson, who races her in partnership with his son Gavin, Apache Fighter is by the Mogok stallion The Apache, an international winner on three continents and Equus Champion of his year.
She is out of the four-time winning Spaceship mare Class Of Her Own, who has produced a winner up to 2400m. Back in form this term with her three starts delivering two seconds prior to Saturday’s victory, Apache Fighter is now a winner of 4 races with 7 places from 16 starts, Apache Fighter took her stakes earnings to R393 075.

BURROUGHS THE WORLDBEATER! The Weighted To Win show’s Daryn Burroughs was the big winner as the curtain came down on Saturday on the Hollywoodbets Spring Country Series Racing Stars competition, which was again run on the massively popular Hollywoodbets Punters’ Challenge platform. The initially weather interrupted series ran from 13 September, and culminated with some serious jostling for position on Saturday 14 October at Hollywoodbets Durbanville as the jockeying for supremacy between South Africa’s racing presenters, personalities, commentators and journalists reached fever pitch. Overall series winner though was Weighted To Win’s ‘young gun’ Darryn Burroughs, who walked away with a kitty-boosting R6 250 for his consistency in finding the winners. The 37-year-old Daryn Burroughs, who tells the Sporting Post that the Computaform is his form guide of choice, is the son of the late Colin
Burroughs, who trained his share of winners in the Cape in years gone by. Daryn makes no bones of the fact that finding the winners is hard work and can mean up to eight hours of form study a day, often days in advance of the racemeeting. “Look, it’s not really hard work when you love it!” he laughs as he thanked Hollywoodbets for the fantastic gesture and generosity of offering a chance to win really nice cash prizes. “The competitions have gone a long way to building bridges and the positive banter and ragging on the Racing Stars whatsapp group is great fun. It’s been thoroughly enjoyable and

at the end of the day it’s a love of racing that is the ultimate golden thread that runs through all of us and gives us such joy and entertainment,” he added. 4Racing’s Nadine Low Ah Kee won the R500 cash for topping the log on Satuday, while Team Betway Weighted To Win, comprising the series winner Daryn Burroughs, Clyde Basel and Darryl Maree, topped the team charts and picked up R250 each. In the overall series team competition, Team GC Presenters, represented by Deez Dyanand, Graeme Hawkins and Paul Lafferty, proved again that there is simply no substitute for experience. The old school trio won R2500 each. 4Racing’s Lyall Cooper earned R500 for the most winners in the series. It was a meritorious performance given the fact that he has not been well in recent months. Meet the Hadlow Twins | Credit: KZN Breeders / Cathy Martin
BRIGHT FUTURE FOR TWIN STARS Foaling season brings a mixed bag of emotions for breeders, whilst the hours of selecting pedigrees come to fruition from August each year with the hopes of a safe foaling and a good sort delivered, as with any animal husbandry there can also be setbacks.
The highs equal the lows and every breeding season has its challenges, but for two foals at Hadlow Stud who have overcome difficulty, the future looks bright indeed. Cathy Martin, Chairman of the KZN Breeders Club, tells the story of taking care of two orphan filly foals. “We have a chestnut filly by first season sire Chimichuri Run, out of Shuffles. The mare died during foaling, and Doug Campbell lost his Var mare Val La Ree at Sugar Hill Stud in Richmond, not long after due to post foaling colic complications; she produced a 98 | 18 OCTOBER 2023
Willow Magic filly. This foal belongs to Doug Campbell with clients.” It has come full circle for the little Willow Magic foal, as her deceased dam Val-La-Ree was born and raised at Hadlow Stud. Shuffles is a Sarge mare who has produced two winners, and Val-Le-Ree had a promising start to her racing career, winning three starts in quick succession. “We would normally try and foster the foals onto a mare who had recently lost her own foal. These days, with new knowledge, it is a fairly
v
quick and easy process as opposed to the time it could take in previous years. This way the foster mare raises and feeds the foal as she would her own – it’s a win-win situation.” “Unfortunately, at the time there were no foster mares available. I contacted Doug and proposed teaming them up as friends. There is nothing more gut wrenching than looking at a little orphan foal lying alone in a stable. They also need to be fed hourly, so it is quite an intensive process.” “Doug sent his filly the next day and they became firm friends very quickly, which is quite a warming moment to watch after a heavy heart. We moved them together into a small paddock and they have never looked back!” “We were fortunate to be able to get a ‘dry nanny’ to keep them company. A lovely crossbreed mare, Nanny Mcfie was rescued by the Coastal Horse Care unit a few years back and went to Bush Hill Stud to keep an orphan company. She has done her job year after year with great love and care ever since.” “Last year she did duties at Blue Sky Thoroughbreds and I was very lucky to be able to use her this year. Her job is to keep them company and teach them manners, which is important for orphan foals. On arriving here she took to them immediately, what a star nanny she has been.”
These two get a whole lot of attention! Credit: KZN Breeders / Cathy Martin
“They are starting to go into a bigger paddock together in the day. The end result will be to integrate Nanny and her two babies into a small herd of mares and foals to allow the orphans to grow up as naturally as possible.” Cathy says the two babies are going from strength to strength and growing beautifully. She advises that they are currently fed every two hours and each drink 24 litres of milk replacer a day, certainly a case of “drinking for the team”. “Being involved in this gives you renewed respect for the mares, who have to produce

this quantity themselves on a daily basis – incredibly, it is approximately 3% of her body weight per day for the first 3 months.” Feeding wise, the two are starting to eat some hay and concentrates so while the quantity of milk stays as is, the regularity of their feeding will decrease until they are getting milk replacer four times per day. The KZN Breeders Club consists of a tight knit group of Thoroughbred breeders, who via a Whatsapp forum assist each other when the need for foster mares are sought. The mares are then returned to their respective farms after the foals are weaned.
There are many success stories the world over of orphan foals going on to win Group races, and the most recent local success story of a foal going onto Graded Stakes winning success was Visionaire filly Emirate Gina, winning the Gr3 Tab4Racing Fillies Mile. Cathy concludes that she hopes by giving the foals a well-balanced diet and good paddock discipline from Nanny McFie and other horses, the play and company of other foals, they will grow up as normally as possible. “We look forward to seeing them developing into the athletes they were born to be!”

THE EQUINE INDUSTRY’S CROWN JEWEL:
HOLLYWOODBETS DURBANVILLE Hollywoodbets Durbanville, the country cousin of Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, has blossomed into a sporting venue now able to stand tall with any other racecourse in South Africa. It used to be a racetrack that provided a “holding service” in the winter months until the sun came out again and all roads led back to Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. Gary Lemke has one statement on this, “Not anymore!” and here’s why… Thanks to a huge cash injection from Hollywoodbets and the unbridled enthusiasm and expertise of Cape Racing, Hollywoodbets Durbanville has become a jewel in the equine industry’s crown and racegoers have embraced the venue. Further confirmation of its rise comes this Sunday when the Cape Racing Sales Ready To Run and Unbroken Two-YearOld Sale takes place at the course.
Not that it’s entirely new, because in previous years it was held there. It’s just that now Hollywoodbets Durbanville is able to showcase all its charm and uniqueness again, as Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, which hosted the Sale for three years from 2020-2022 is being made picture perfect for the looming Cape Summer Season. Veteran trainer Greg Ennion says that he actually prefers Hollywoodbets Durbanville for the CRS Ready To Run Sale. “I think at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth the horses are too far away, while at Hollywoodbets Durbanville you’re able to judge them galloping a lot better, because as a spectator you’re that much

closer. It makes a big difference when making decisions. That’s one of the bigger positives,” he said at the course last weekend.
to grow from being sold as yearlings and an owner doesn’t have to wait that long before they hit the racetrack.
At last count there have been 18 withdrawals from the 110 catalogued horses – including Nadeson Park Stud, so affected by the recent Cape storms, and who took out their 13 lots – but it’s packed with quality. The 2020 Sun Met winner One World has his offspring on show and he’s the only stallion with unraced progeny.
You will also find Kuda Insurance’s Bloodstock Product Manager Jo Campher and Janine Koster, Kuda’s division head of niche products. The latter is part of the Koster family which runs Cheveley Stud in the beautiful Western Cape region of Ceres. It was founded by Wilfred and Shirley Koster in 1980 and is now overseen by another Koster in Vaughan. Some 15 different Grade One winners have been bred by the farm over the years, including London News, National Emblem, Argonaut, Badger’s Drift, Divine Act, Gluwein, Legislate, Snowdance and Bela Bela. Legislate, the 2014 Horse of the Year, is represented by four lots, one of which was bred by Cheveley Stud.
It is a Sale which always throws up a future champion and naturally there’s the incentive of the lucrative Ready To Run Stakes to provide an incentive for owners to get involved. The winner’s roll of the RTR Stakes in recent years has been Seeking The One (Klawervlei bred), Fifty Fiver (Klawervlei), Seeking The Stars (Klawervlei), Pure State (Limpo Trading) and Cirillo (Riverton). The other incentive is that, being two-year-olds, they’ve had a chance

Among the products that anyone buying a twoyear-old and looking to insure them at the sale can choose from are two that stand out.
“The After Auction Keep Cover is a fall of hammer product where Kuda insures the horse on an annual basis for a selected mortality value based on the fall of hammer price. Training, spelling, pre-training and other horse related costs can be quite substantial. In the unfortunate event that your horse should perish, choosing this cover at or after the auction covers you for up to R12 500 per month (minus earnings) as additional protection,” Campher explains.
“The Lifesaving Surgery and Critical Care extension is really worth considering when buying a horse at this Sale,” says Campher. “We refer to it as ‘higher limits with lower worries’. It’s an all-in hospital cover, including treatments and operations, where the horse’s life is in immediate danger. It covers up to R100 000 or eight days, whichever comes first. Then there is the Among the products that anyone buying a two-year-old and looking to
It’s a product aimed at new and existing owners and applies to the first year after a Sale.
“It all shows that when it comes to a Sale there are so many moving parts, and that everyone has a role to play in making the experience memorable and stress-free,” she adds.

Beamonesque, powerful sprinter | Credit: mikedekockracing
ONE FOR THE NOTEBOOK There are a few relevant puns to think of, in reference to Beamonesque’s seven-length win in a 1200m Maiden on the inside track at Turffontein on Saturday. “He jumped well and put daylight between himself and his rivals” is one, and “We’re hoping he reaches great heights” could be another. Beamonesque was named after Robert ‘Bob’ Beamon, an American former track and field star, best known for his world record in the Long Jump at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968. He jumped 8.90m and broke the existing record by a staggering 55cm – still the Olympic record! But, as always, Mike de Kock won’t want to jump the gun. things for this smart-looking son of Rafeef and Mohallela, a lightly raced mare who placed twice for the stable in 2018 before she was retired to stud under Sheik Hamdan”s Shadwell banner. He said: “Beamonesque has a lot of pace, so much so that I won’t mind putting him in a 1000m race. I think we’ll keep him to sprinting for now. It’s too soon to make a call on him, we’ll need to see more, but he does give us the vibes of a horse that has a future. He reminds me a bit of (our international Gr1 winning sprinter) Shea Shea.” Jockey Gavin Lerena said that Beamonesque gave him a nice feel: “He jumped well and switched off, did it like a gentleman. He’s a nice horse and this was a lovely win.” Beamonesque races for Warne Rippon and Arun Chadha’s ASSM Syndicate, with Mathew

de Kock, Corey Smith, Clint and James Prebble from Australia also involved, and Mike owning a share himself. Said Corey, the communications manager for Mathew and training partner Robbie Griffiths at Cranbourne: “We watched the race live and we were ecstatic. Clint is a lifelong racing supporter and a big fan of Mike and his crew. James works in racing, also, for Mathew Cumani who has another South African Jason May (formerly from Drakenstein) working for him. So, we all shared a smile!”
Woman Of Power opened the day with her Maiden win for Jessica and Steven Jell of Mauritzfontein. She was drawn wide again, like two weeks ago when she ran out of steam near the line. but Jockey JP van der Merwe waited a bit longer before he hit the accelerator this time and he said: “She was fitter today and she won well, there was more in the tank.” Mike agreed and said: “Woman of Power is progressive. Being by Vercingetorix out of a Fort Wood mare, I think she’ll go on from here and enjoy a bit more ground. She’s a decent filly.”

City Of Troy wins the Gr1 Native Trail Dewhurst Stakes on Saturday | Credit: Racing TV
JUSTIFYING CHAMPIONSHIP STATUS Unbeaten US Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy) made a tremendous start to his stud career with his first crop. In the Southern Hemisphere, Justify ended the 2022-2023 season as Australia’s Leading First Season Sire, while the chestnut’s first Northern Hemisphere crop was headed by the Gr1 winners Arabian Lion (Woody Stephens Stakes) and Aspen Grove (Belmont Oaks). However, Justify’s second Northern Hemisphere crop, now two, is looking potentially even better with this crop already including by Saturday’s brilliant Gr1 Native Trail Dewhurst Stakes winner City Of Troy.
The latter looks likely to be crowned a Cartier Champion later this year. He has drawn comparisons with none other than Frankel, having won his three starts by an aggregate of twelve and a half lengths. At the time of writing, the exceptional City Of Troy (an impressive winner of the Gr2 bet365 Superlative Stakes back in July) is one of seven stakes winners to have emerged from Justify’s second Northern Hemisphere crop. This crop has also produced the Gr1 winning fillies Opera Singer (Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac) and Just F Y I (Frizette Stakes), as well as the graded/ group stakes winners Buchu, Hard To Justify and Ramatuelle. 18 OCTOBER 2023 | 117
v
Justify, who is inbred to the South African champion Hawaii, has covered plenty of mares by Galileo, with this cross having yielded the aforementioned four stakes winners headed by City Of Troy, while Galileo’s sire Sadler’s Wells is broodmare sire of the aforementioned Opera Singer. Sire of five Gr1 winners in his first two Northern Hemisphere crops, Justify, whose son Gasper De Lemos ran second in Saturday’s Gr3 Ghaiyyath Zetland Stakes, is currently responsible for 21 stakes winners. He is also continuing the impressive record that sire sons of the much missed Scat Daddy are enjoying. The Coolmore Stud based Scat Daddy son No Nay Never, whose flagbearers include Breeders’ Cup winner Meditate and outstanding two-year-olds Little Big Bear and Blackbeard, has been responsible for more
than 50 stakes winners thus far including 2023 group winners Array, Les Pavots, Matrika and Lake Forest. No Nay Never’s dual Gr1 winning son Ten Sovereigns continued his sire line’s hot streak when his first-crop son Inquisitively won Friday’s Gr3 Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket. Another son of Scat Daddy, the now Japan domiciled Caravaggio, is the sire of 2021 Gr1 Diana Stakes winner Whitebeam as well as this year’s Gr1 Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes winner Porta Fortuna, while Scat Daddy’s Gr1 Phoenix Stakes winning son Sioux Nation has come up with eight group winners from his first two crops, including Friday’s Gr2 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards Challenge Stakes winner Matilda Picotte.

Golden Sixty stretches impressively in work on Tuesday | Credit: HKJC
GOLDEN SIXTY A ‘HAPPY HORSE’ Trainer Francis Lui declared Golden Sixty a ‘happy horse’ ahead of his highly anticipated return this season in either the Gr2 BOCHK Private Wealth Jockey Club Mile (1600m) on 19 November or Gr1 LONGINES Hong Kong Mile (1600m) on 10 December. Initially slated to resume in the HK$32 million LONGINES Hong Kong Mile, Lui indicated that Hong Kong’s champion could initially chase winning a fourth straight HK$5.35 million BOCHK Private Wealth Jockey Club Mile after his galloper appeared in fine condition under jockey Vincent Ho at Sha Tin’s barrier trial session on Tuesday morning.
120 | 18 OCTOBER 2023
“We’ll see – maybe. Of course, the main target is the international. We can consider the Group 2, it all depends on how his condition is. He’ll trial again, once or twice and then we will decide,” Lui said. Golden Sixty’s record-breaking exploits have resulted in him becoming the only nine-time Group 1 winner in Hong Kong, the highest prize money earner in history (HK$147.93 million) and the only three-straight Hong Kong Horse of the Year (2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23) recipient. “He’s an older horse, a happy horse. He’s ok, Vincent was happy and said he was a little bit fat – of course, he hasn’t run for a long time,” Lui said.
v
The Medaglia d’Oro gelding has won 25 out of his 29 starts in Hong Kong. Lui isn’t looking beyond his bid to capture a third LONGINES Hong Kong Mile success with Golden Sixty, instead opting to take it one run at a time beyond his main target in December with his superstar horse who collected three Group 1’s last term. “He’s an eight-year-old, I will just try to not run him too much. I’ll let the horse tell me what to do. It’s good to see him come back,” Lui said. “His character is still good, even his mind and inside the stable it is still strong.” Golden Sixty won the 2020 and 2021 editions of the LONGINES Hong Kong Mile, while California Spangle thwarted his hat-trick bid in the 2022 renewal. California Spangle returned for a first-up victory in last Sunday’s (15 October) HK$5.35 million
G2 Sha Tin Trophy Handicap (1600m). The pair will meet again in either November, December or both contests. 2023 BMW Hong Kong Derby (2000m) winner Voyage Bubble worked through the same barrier trial as Golden Sixty and trainer Ricky Yiu also returned satisfied. “He trialled well, which I expected him to. He’s a fresh horse, he’s keen to do his job and he pulled up ok. He’s not blowing like he had a long break, he seems like he’s racing fit and the jockey (Alexis Badel) couldn’t tell that it was his first barrier trial for a long time – it’s a good sign. “I couldn’t fault him and I am looking forward to running him in November,” Yiu said. Voyage Bubble will return in the BOCHK Private Wealth Jockey Club Mile.

EXTRAORDINARY WIN FOR NZ PUNTER!
A
New Zealand punter miraculously selected the correct finish order for The TAB Everest from first to last - and won nearly NZ$10 million on Saturday.
The win equates to approximately R111 million! The punter correctly selected the placings of all 12 sprinters in The TAB Everest won by Think About It in a free competition open to all NZ TAB account holders. The odds of selecting the exact finishing order is believed to be nearly 500 million to one. The Auckland-based punter, who requested anonymity after his life-changing win, told the NZ Herald he saw the promotion on the NZ TAB website and decided to “give it a crack”. “I didn’t put too much thought into my picks 126 | 18 OCTOBER 2023
and just dropped the runners where I thought it could go,’’ he said. “Honestly, I could not believe I’d won it. I actually thought it was a hoax when they first rang me - I called the TAB back, and it took quite a lot of convincing before it sank in. “To have pulled it off, winning NZ$10 million in a free to play competition, is truly incredible for my family and I.” The Everest, the world’s richest race on turf with prizemoney of $20 million, was won by favourite Think About It from I Wish I Win and Private Eye. The placegetters were the top three in the betting so the punter was playing it safe selecting that trio but getting the next nine runners in order was an extraordinary feat.
v
Godolphin duo In Secret and Cylinder ran fourth and fifth followed by Hawaii Five Oh (sixth), Espiona (seventh), Buenos Noches (eighth), Shinzo (ninth), Overpass (10th), Mazu (11th) and Alcohol Free (12th). The odds of correctly choosing first to 12th in The Everest is exactly one in 479,001,600. The Everest Mega Millions promotion with its $NZ10 million ($A9.2 million) prize pool was designed by NZ TAB to raise awareness in that country of the rich Randwick race particularly with New Zealand-bred sprinter I Wish I Win one of the leading chances. I Wish I Win, trained by Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman, raced in the Everest slot of NZ TAB and its partner, Entain. The NZ TAB promotion was free to account holders but limited to one entry per person.
It is understood NZ TAB and Entain took out insurance for the promotion in the unlikely event a punter did select the 12 Everest runners in finishing order. Cameron Rodger, the managing director of Entain New Zealand which operates NZ TAB, said for a punter to take home the huge prize is “an amazing result”. “The Everest is the world’s richest race on turf and this customer has managed to take home more than the winner’s purse by pulling off one of the most impressive selecting feats we have ever seen,’’ Rodger said. “The race had over 400 million possible finish results, and he managed to nail the exact one needed. We’re thrilled with the customer engagement this innovative competition was able to generate and a huge congratulations to our winner.”

VAAL v
- IMPORTANT NOTICE
The 4Racing Racing Operations Team advise that racing at the Vaal has moved to the Classic Track from 12 October in order to allow the maintenance team to start the Vaal Main Track mini treatment early. The treatment has been administered and an inspection of the Vaal track was conducted on Tuesday, 17 October 2023. The conclusion was drawn that the Vaal main track needs additional time to fully recover.
As a result, a decision was made to move the meeting for 26 October 2023 from the Vaal main track to the Vaal Classic track. Additionally, the meeting for 2 November 2023 will be moved to the Turf inside track. We will be back on the Vaal main track on 7 November 2023. We continue to strive to provide the best possible racing surface for our horses and riders.
