After a humdinger opening last Sunday, a bumper card heralds the first Saturday meeting back at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on 2 December, with the R1 250 000 WSB Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas the headliner. Fourteen high-class sophomores will line up in the fairer sex clash, with five visitors looking to follow in the hoofprints of the grey flyer Majmu, who was the last ‘away’ winner when scoring for Mike de Kock and Anthony Delpech in 2014. Sean Tarry’s star Mrs Geriatrix, currently 6-1 with Hollywoodbets, will be keen to bounce back after suffering her first defeat when running fifth in the Western Cape Fillies Championship behind the progressive Rascova last time. Mrs G has drawn 13 at her first start at the Southern Suburbs venue, while Rascova has a

nice gate at 5, and should relish the step up to the mile. Mike de Kock saddles the exciting Silver Sanctuary (6-1), a winner at her last start of the Listed Summer Pudding Handicap on her Turffontein home ground. The daughter of Silvano is drawn in midfield and looks decent value at the price. Justin Snaith last lifted the sought-after trophy in 2017 with Snowdance. The SA champion saddles recent Western Cape Fillies Championship runner-up Double Grand Slam, who jumps from pole position and is currently 7-2 favourite with Hollywoodbets. A R1 million National Yearling Sale purchase, she looks sure to enjoy the mile and could give Grant van Niekerk his second success after Chansonette upset the applecart in 2021. Candice Dawson saddled Saturday’s Betway Summer Cup Consolation winner Perfect Witness and will be hoping that her William

Longsword daughter Just Be Lekker can make the step up in class and to the mile. She has a tough gate to beat. While the fillies classic will hold pride of place, the appearance of KZN star See It Again, Charles Dickens and SA Horse Of The Year Princess Calla in the R600 000 WSB Gr2 Green Point Stakes will also be a major attraction. Both See It Again and Charles Dickens won their season debut contests, while Princess Calla will be smarting after being beaten by

lesser light King Regent at Hollywoodbets Durbanville. The third Festival meeting on Sunday 10 December, features the Gr2 Cape Merchants, followed by another action-packed day on Saturday 16 December, which will see the running of the Gr1 Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas, the Gr3 Ridgemont Peninsula Handicap, and the Gr3 Hollywoodbets Victress Stakes. The highly anticipated return to the new look Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday was even better than we expected! From unrecognizable improvements and upliftment in facilities across the board, to a tangible change in attitude and hospitality from personnel, the Greg Bortz ideal of ‘world-class’ suddenly doesn’t look like a far-fetched pipedream anymore.

The cynicism, doubts and apathy of a year ago have been converted into support across the board, and a sense of community prevailed under sunny skies. We don’t all have to like each other, but racing rules and we are a part of history in the making! We love it!

v

After a largely frustrating Betway Summer Cup day by his high standards, Sean Tarry’s highly regarded Tail Of The Comet compounded the agony as he failed to find the cash in the Hollywoodbets Kenilworth Sunday headliner, while Justin Snaith’s Hluhluwe suddenly looks a serious classic contender. The R500 000 Gr2 Cape Punters Cup is a traditional stepping stone into South Africa’s leading classic at the same venue on Saturday 16 December. SA Champion trainer Justin Snaith will be feeling a lot better in his bid for a third Cape Guineas victory after he saddled a Drakenstein bred 1-2, with the progressive Trippi colt Hluhluwe coming from the tail of the field to beat Lancaster Bomber stablemate Snow Pilot. Who would have thought there was an R88 Snaith exacta lurking in the wings? After his cracking Cape Racing Sales Ready To Run Stakes demolition job at the country course in October, Tail Of The Comet started at 6-10 and looked hard to beat. But just as the pace and bad luck had frustrated the multiple champion trainer on the Betway Summer Cup day, the pace was again a factor as ‘they dropped anchor’ early on, in the words of Richard Fourie, thus destroyed the Comet’s hopes of a confidence booster into the classic. It is fair to observe that, had the sales race been run as scheduled at Hollywodbets Kenilworth as originally scheduled, Tarry would have benefitted from the track experience from both his 2yo flagbearers. Lest we forget that Mrs Geriatrix was caught offside in The Gr2 Western Cape Fillies Championship and starts in the WSB Cape Fillies Guineas next Saturday, without the benefit of a race at HQ. But let’s not detract from the Snaith victory! Likened to a young version of Jet Dark, Hluhluwe was a convincing winner and is clearly on the up! Hluhluwe (14-1) went on well to win by 0,40 lengths – no time was published. Snow Pilot (25-1) looks a dark horse for the Guineas and finished second with a fastfinishing Green With Envy (20-1) a neck back 24 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

in in third. Tail Of The Comet (6-10) failed to quicken and ran a 2,75 length fifth. Hluhluwe was bred by Drakenstein Stud and raced by Nic Jonsson. He is a son of Trippi (End Sweep) out of the one-time winning Giant’s Causeway mare Lebombo Breeze, who celebrated a winner 24 hours earlier at Turffontein when her Twice Over sired son Breeze Over won the 3200m Racehorse Owners Association Stakes, run at a muddling gallop over 3200m. Hluhluwe, a R500 000 National Yearling Sale graduate, took his stakes tally to 4 wins with 1 place from 8 starts for stakes of R597 988. Entries for the Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas close on Monday 4 December. The Cape Summer Season of Champions continues at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Saturday 2 December when the Gr1 World Sports Betting Cape Fillies Guineas headlines another terrific afternoon of horseracing.

he Bass Racing Centenary Syndicate celebrated their biggest win to date at the revamped Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday when the Var gelding Future Variety showed his appreciation for the 1200m, to win the R225 000 City Of Cape Town Listed Sophomore Sprint under a welljudged ride by Morne Winnaar. In a climate of spiralling costs, syndication is the new buzz word in Cape horseracing, and Greg Bortz and his team couldn’t have scripted things better on the opening day of their Summer Festival Of Racing. A crowd of owners, including the likes of celebrated former Champion jockey Kevin Shea, enjoyed the sunshine, terrific new facilities, and the joy of a feature win, courtesy of the handsome chestnut son of Var. The under-utilised Morne Winnaar had the

gelding relaxed early and built him up as they came through the 300m, with the speedmakers up front gasping for air. At the 250m Future Variety (10-1) was in full stride and he went on really well to win by 0,50 lengths in a time of 70,06 secs. Stablemate Captain Arrow (10-1) finished next best, with the early pacesetter Underworld (10-1) in third, a head off second place. The highly regarded favourite Ready To Charge (11-10) had nothing to offer late, and ran out of the money, but only 1,50 lengths behind the winner. He is worth another chance. Future Variety was bred by Lammerskraal Stud and is a son of the deceased Var (Forest Wildcat) out of the one-time winning mare Furina (Parade Leader). The winner took his stakes tally to two wins with three places from six starts for stakes of R307 900.

THE FUTURE IS SWEET! Glen Kotzen-trained Sweetie Darling (Philasande Mxoli) charges home | Credit: Chase Liebenberg

A brand-new chapter opened for horseracing in the Cape under glorious summer skies on Sunday as the R200 000 The Futurity Plate kicked off the return to action at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. Increased stakes and a revitalized and wellthought-out programme has changed the landscape for 2yo racing in the Cape and the first juvenile scurry of the season produced an exciting finish, with its share of drama. The Glen Kotzen-trained Sweetie Darling swept past the 28-10 favourite Sahara Cat to win well under Philasande Mxoli for Itssa It & Business Solutions (Pty) Ltd. The fancied Sahara Cat showed a lot of early pace and she went on strongly but had no 32 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

answer to the strong late effort from the Glen Kotzen-trained Sweetie Darling. Kola Tonic ran an eye-catching race in third, while Lion Rampart stumbled in the shadow of the post but managed to hold on for fourth. There was no luck for the connections of Wizz as jockey Devan Ashby was unseated as the gates opened. The winner is a R150 000 Cape Yearling Sale purchase. A daughter of Royal Mo (Uncle Mo) she was bred by Patricia Devine Investments (Pty) Ltd and is out of two-time winning Captain Al mare, Captain’s Darling. Sweetie Darling has R118 750 stakes in the bank and looks a filly to follow and races in the same silks as WSB Cape Fillies Guineas prospect, Rascova. Eugene and Sandy Arundel will be thrilled!

Enemy Territory is an easy winner under Gareth Wright | Credit: Chase Liebenberg

CANFORD CLIFFS’ DAUGHTER BOWLS ‘EM OVER

The Kieswetter family have plenty to look forward to with the progressive Canford Cliffs filly Enemy Territory as she made it three victories on the trot with a fluent performance in Sunday’s R180 000 Schweppes Summer Bowl at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth.

While carrying a light weight, her 22.9 second 400m-finish sectional in her victory here was decent, and she can be watched for further progress up the ladder.

The Brett Crawford-trained Barnane Stud bred 4yo has found her feet beyond the sprints, and came home powerfully under Gareth Wright at 33-10 to beat the rested Saartjie (25-2) by 3,25 lengths in a time of 97,77 secs for the mile.

A daughter of the international stakes winning sire Canford Cliffs (Tagula), she was bred by the Kieswetter’s Barnane Stud out of the thrice winning High Chaparral mare, Chevauchee.

A winner of 4 races with 2 places from 8 starts, Enemy Territory has earned stakes of R341 451.

FLOWER ALLEY SON WINS FOR WHYTE & FERRARIS IN HONG KONG Wilgerbosdrift’s highly successful sire Flower Alley had a memorable weekend, with his daughter Perfect Witness capturing the Betway Summer Cup Consolation at Turffontein on Saturday, and his son Apex Top winning at Sha Tin on Sunday. The gelded Apex Top raced just off the pace early in the Chevalier Insurance Handicap before hitting the front a furlong from home and going on to score by a head. Ridden to victory by Luke Ferraris, Apex Top is trained by Douglas Whyte. Bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein, Apex Top has now won three times in Hong Kong. The gelding, closely inbred to Forty Niner, is out of the Rich Man’s Gold mare Cosima Liszt.

His Gr1 Travers Stakes winning sire Flower Alley is also the sire of the very classy mare Perfect Witness, who dug down deep to win the Betway Summer Cup Consolation on Saturday. Under Diego De Gouveia (who is unbeaten on her), the five-year-old stuck her head down where it mattered most to win by a head. Bred by Sandown Stud, the Candice Dawson trained Perfect Witness has now won seven times, with the mare victorious in each of her three latest starts. Flower Alley is also the sire of South Africa’s reigning Horse Of The Year Princess Calla, a runner in Saturday’s Gr2 World Sports Betting Green Point Stakes.

WINTER WINNERS! Drakenstein Stud sire What A Winter struck twice at the Vaal on Tuesday, with the multiple Equus Champion’s daughter Inventrix successful in the eighth race on the card, and the gelded What A Tiger victorious in the ninth and final race on the day.

Bred by Hemel ‘N Aarde Stud, Inventrix has finished either first or second in each of her last four starts.

What A Winter went close to having a treble on Tuesday with his daughter What A Honey beaten just a head when runner-up in the sixth race.

The Fabian Habib trained What A Tiger was always prominent in the running of the MR 68 Handicap (1000m) before powering away, under Denis Schwarz, to score by two and a quarter lengths.

Four-year-old Inventrix proved too strong for her rivals when she landed the www.tab4racing.co.za FM 78 Handicap (1000m) by just under three parts of a length. Ridden to victory by Denis Schwarz, Inventrix is trained by Fanie Bronkhurst.

The filly, who is out of the Jallad mare Lamarr, was a R100 000 purchase from the 2021 August Two Year Old Sale.

Bred by Shadwell Stud, What A Tiger was a R175 000 buy from the 2021 National Yearling Sale. Runner up on the South African General Sires List last season, the four-time Gr1 winning What A Winter has nine lots on offer at the 2024 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Sean Tarry leads Thunderstruck (Richard Fourie) in after his win on Sunday | Credit: Chase Liebenberg

THIS IS MORE LIKE IT!

It has been some time between drinks for the Rafeef colt Thunderstruck. Without a win for over a year, the 2yo Gr1 winner found his best stride to win the R200 000 The Banty Bay Stakes at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday. Sean Tarry’s handsome 4yo is a class act and he produced a workmanlike showing to stamp his summer season feature claims here. Backed from 4’s to 2’s, he drifted out late, but maintained his momentum to the line under Richard Fourie to beat Surjay (6-1) by three quarters in a time of 62,11 secs.

An Avontuur-bred son of Ridgemont kingpin Rafeef (Redoute’s Choice) his Gr2 winning dam Varikate is a daughter of the late super sire VAR (Forest Wildcat). Thunderstruck has been quite lightly raced and took his tally to 4 wins with 6 places from 13 starts for stakes of R1 052 250.

second stage entry after winning the Listed Michaelmas Handicap in his home province last month, Nathan Kotzen’s Royal Victory became the first KZN-based galloper this century to win the R5 million Betway Gr1 Summer Cup at a bustling Turffontein on Saturday.

A former assistant trainer to multiple champion Mike de Kock, Nathan Kotzen enjoyed the rare privilege of prepping the R90 000 son of Pathfork, now an earner of over R3,6 million in stakes, to beat his former boss’ big hitter Safe Passage in a thrilling finish to the Highveld showpiece. With the scratching of the Tony Peter duo of Meridius and Electric Gold reducing the field to 18 for the record stake renewal of the historic 2000m contest, it was Litigation who won the scramble for the early lead and the pace was always muddling. In the run for home Royal Victory, having his first run over 2000m, built up from rear of

midfield as he picked them off one by one and had Son Of Raj and Safe Passage firmly in his sights at the 200m. Under an enthusiastic left handed ride from Muzi Yeni, Royal Victory (33-1) showed his appreciation for the trip to score a deserved 2,25 length victory in a time of 124,05 secs. Safe Passage (11-2) found his better form again and ran his heart out in second, ahead of Sean Tarry’s gallant filly Bless My Stars (11-2) in third. Fabian Habib’s Zeus (8-1) found support and ran a cracker in fourth. The winner is raced by passionate racing folk Peter Victor, B J Wiese & Natasha Sturdy and was a peak career moment for Summerveld conditioner Nathan Kotzen.Bred by Ambiance Stud, Royal Victory is by Ridgemont’s Distorted Humor stallion Pathfork out of the four-time winning Kahal mare, Kailani. An astute R90 000 buy off the National Yearling Sale, he has now won 4 races with 6 places from 15 starts for stakes of R3 636 250.

HOW 4RACING SAW IT The race day was pure excitement from start to finish, but it wasn’t just the incredible racing that stole the show on a family fun Jozi day, in which the event’s theme of ‘Summer Reign’ burst into vibrant life on a sweltering day on the Highveld.

The glitzy Red Carpet dazzled with Johannesburg’s finest socialites and the who’s who of the horseracing and sporting industries. The likes of former national cricket captain Graeme Smith, Kaizer Chiefs Marketing and Commercial Director Jessica Motaung, former Bafana Bafana internationals Siphiwe Tshabalala, Lucky Legwathi and Hlompho Kekana, as well as sports broadcaster Motshidisi Mohono, were among those who 46 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

brought glitz and glam to the Red Carpet, along with 4Racing CEO Fundi Sithebe, Purple Group CEO and 4Racing Board Chairperson, Charles Savage, and glamorous Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Tasneem Motara. In keeping with the theme of the Betway Summer Cup being the ‘People’s Race’ all the hard-working Grooms who lovingly nurtured the horses in the final field of the Betway Summer Cup were awarded an amazing R20 000 each by Betway, as they all left the course as winners regardless of the outcome of their horses. The renowned DJ Zinhle had everyone dancing with her beats, making the whole racecourse pulsate with energy and when Lady Du hit the stage, the crowd went wild!

The fashion on the day was absolutely incredible, with everyone interpreting the ‘Summer Reign’ theme in various ways. African Luxury Design House and partner- Excelsior Lusso showed off their amazing new collection - Lekgawa la di Kgosigadi on models strutting down the red carpet, turning heads and making jaws drop.

– KING OF THE SUMMER! The thrilled Royal Victory team | Credit: Candiese Lenferna

50 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

‘My Dad owned horses forever – he had one winner. I have been it for five minutes, and here’s my first Grade 1!’ v

29 NOVEMBER 2023 | 51

v

Betway Summer Cup winning owner Peter Victor scrapped plans of becoming a jockey years ago. He was too big, but rode work and did his time in the stable yard, before the demands of domestic life dictated that he find a ‘real job’. In 2015 he became an owner. On Saturday he celebrated a maiden Gr1 success. An infectious, yet considered and quietly spoken personality, the 55 year old Peter Victor, who is a passionate 12 handicap golfer, lives at the Heron Banks Golf Estate on the beautiful Vaal River. He spoke to the Sporting Post in the aftermath of a memorable Saturday, following the 4yo Ambiance Stud-bred Royal Victory’s resounding victory in the Highveld flagship race under the enthusiastic showman, Muzi Yeni.

52 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

The man who grew up in Alberton joined the Post Office after school, and wasn’t always in a position to own racehorses. He remains conservative in his outlook today and enjoys having partners in his horses. A successful business manufacturing firelighters – we call it Blitz – has enabled him to live his passion. And the Royal Victory story is a fairytale in many respects. From getting involved after the original buyer had to bale out, with a horse that cost just R90 000, to his first horse with Nathan Kotzen, Star Of Joburg, being retired. “Things have just worked out unbelievably. Star Of Joburg, who I had sent down to race on the all-weather, was ready to call it a day. Nathan phoned me and suggested I get involved in a youngster he had just bought. I transferred the cash for my 51%. Today I am the proud owner of this magnificent Pathfork

v

gelding, together with Natasha Sturdy and Brandon Wiese.” Peter enjoyed his first winner with the Erico Verdonese-trained She’s A Flirt, who won a R90 000 maiden at Turffontein under Smanga Khumalo on 29 May 2016. But while he is quick to point out that every winner is to be celebrated, Saturday’s Gr1 will remain with him forever. “The emotion that we all felt afterwards was enormous. This wasn’t about the R5 million stake. It was about a life plan come together. My Dad Vic had horses for years and years and years. He had one solitary winner ridden by then apprentice Deon Sampson back in 1992. I am still mates with Deon. And now I am in the game for 5 minutes, and here I have had probably 32 winners, including a Gr1 and Gr3,” he adds emotionally.

When Peter decided to take out his colours, he and son Michael went down to the NHA offices eight years ago, and were mulling over the silk selection. “Silks are like a flag – they represent you. We couldn’t decide on colours until Michael said, ‘what about Oupa’s silks?’ I asked the lady, quite optimistically, whether they still had Mr Vic Victor’s silks. She said yes, and they were still available. That was it!” he adds. He recounts that his Dad’s silks on the back of Royal Victory was all he could focus on inside the final 500m on Saturday. “I said to Nathan, ‘how far?’ They’re all off the bit and he’s still cruising!’” He described the moment when Royal Victory pulled away from the Mike de Kock-trained Safe Passage to win rather easily.

29 NOVEMBER 2023 | 53

v

“I don’t even know what happened. It was like a blank. A blur.A pinch yourself moment.” When reality dawned the group had become scattered and Peter had to look for his wife Belinda. He found her hyper-ventilating. “On Sunday morning I woke up and thought it was all just a dream. Seriously!” His most emotional win was actually Royal Victory’s 2023 PinkDrive Listed Michaelmas triumph, because it happened to be on the annual cancer raceday. His daughter Chantal was diagnosed with cancer shortly after matriculating and sadly passed away just four and a half years later. Peter is a cancer survivor himself , but on Monday he had just been to see the doctor and was given a clean bill of health. He enjoys the togetherness of family and sees his 35 year old daughter Sharon and 28 year old son Michael, often. “In the hurly burly of the moment, there are so many people we may forget to thank.

54 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

Nathan Kotzen and his team have done an amazing job. Together with Ted Hughes, who transported our boy up and for the attention to detail – like leaving shortly after midnight to ensure they were travelling in cool conditions. Then 4Racing and Betway for putting up the prize money. Racing is about us all working together. The day was a special success – I know I am probably a bit biased,” he laughs. So where to now for the gallant Royal Victory? “He has now earned a break and will be aimed long term at the 2024 Hollywoodbets Durban July. I can confirm that there are no plans to travel to Cape Town. Let’s look in that direction late next year maybe if things go well,” adds Peter. And we had to ask – did he banker his horse in the R12 million Pick 6 on Saturday? “I told friends he will win. He was 70-1 with the Bookies. One pal of mine had R500 each way on the tote – he collected over R10 000 and now probably thinks it’s an easy game! I had ten horses in my Pick 6 in that leg. Just shows!” he laughs as he bids us farewell.

Pitcher made it five on the trot and registered his maiden stakes strike in gung-ho fashion with an electrifying late dash under Kabelo Matsunyane. With the long-time pacesetter Gimmeanotherchance (11-2) rolling along powerfully, as the odds-on favourite Sandringham Summit (5-10) battled to make up ground from last, Purple Pitcher (25-2) produced a finely timed late burst to win in a time of 97,57 secs.

v

The son of New Predator’s momentum was deceptive, with his winning margin a quarter length, and the winning rider not being certain that he had actually gotten up to win! Sandringham Summit lobbed along in last and took forever to get going. He was beaten 2 lengths into third. The best performed son of the deceased New Predator (New Approach), the winner is out of the one-time winning Count Dubois mare, Heliantha. A winner of 5 races – he has not been beaten

since winning his maiden in August- with 2 places from 9 starts, Purple Pitcher took his stakes earnings to R268 750. He was purchased for R170 000 off the BSA National 2yo Sale last year and now looks a realistic SA Triple Crown contender. So, a day that promised so much just weeks ago, as we debated a possible showdown between top 3yo’s Main Defender and Sandringham Summit, saw the one ignominiously withdrawn, and the other beaten fair and square. Racing is not for the fairytalechasing faint of heart!

DYCE RUNS THEM OFF THEIR FEET! The Betway Summer Cup day carryover Pick 6 pool soared to R12 127 000 as Lucky Houdalakis’ flyer Dyce ran his opposition off their feet to win the R400 000 New Turf Carriers Gr3 Merchants in the fashion of a speedster going places. While the dramatic withdrawal of Tony Peter’s high-class 3yo Main Defender was the talking point, Dyce (9-10) jumped exotic favourite and pulled one back for punch-drunk players as he produced a display of low flying speed under Craig Zackey for the happy big day crowd and was never headed to beat Gladatorian (8-1) by 4,25 lengths in a time of 67,31 secs. Danilo Danilovitch (33-1) gave the trifecta a lift as he ran into third, a further 1,50 lengths back. Bred by Dave Shawe’s Titanium Racing, Dyce is by Cape Guineas winner William Longsword (Captain Al) out of the one-time winning Galileo mare, Beshaayir. Dyce has won 6 races with 5 places from 12 starts for stakes of R734 500.

Dyce was one of the best two-year-old’s of his crop, culminating in a big win in the Epol Gr2 Umkhomazi Stakes over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Greyville turf, which he won by 4,30 lengths. An injury then kept him off the racetrack for 15 months. In his comeback he won second time out in impressive style in a Graduation Plate over 1200m and then finished a narrow second in the Grand Heritage to stablemate Duke Of Sussex, to whom he gave 3,5kg. Dyce had one more run after the Grand Heritage before the next injury put him out for eight months. Now a 5yo, he has won all his three starts on his return to action this term. He should pay to follow!

Saturday’s Gr3 New Turf Carriers Merchants winner Dyce (William Longsword) hails from a truly exceptional female line. His dam Beshaayir, who was sired by Galileo and granddam Sarkha by Danehill, while Dyce sports Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes/Gr2 Lowther Stakes winner Dead Certain (Absalom) as his fourth dam. The latter accounted for two highly successful broodmares in Line Of Thunder, dam of Kentucky Derby winner and champion sire Thunder Gulch, and Chimes Of Freedom, dam of US champion Aldebaran and Gr1 winner Good Journey, when she won the 1989 Gr1 Cheveley Park Stakes. Described as “difficult to train and temperamental”, Dead Certain retired to stud having won five of 12 starts, including

68 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

the 1990 Gr2 Prix Maurice De Gheest. At stud, Dead Certain produced nine winners, including Cornwallis Stakes runner- up Deadly Nightshade. The latter’s Danehill daughter Sarkha is the dam of Listed Thukela Handicap winner Lehaaf, as well as Gr3 Flamboyant Stakes second Salsabeel, and also ranks as the granddam of Saturday’s smart winner, Dyce. Further back, this is also the family of Gr1 winning milers Accidental Agent and Mohaather, Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Pleasantly Perfect, and Oaks winner Pia, with Dyce directly descended in female line from Plucky Liege (Spearmint), one of the greatest broodmares in history. Hailing from the same family as legendary racemare Sceptre (Persimmon) and unbeaten British Triple Crown winner Ormonde (Bend Or), Plucky Liege produced four hugely

v

influential sire sons in the form of Bull Dog, Sir Gallahad III, Bois Roussel, and Admiral Drake. All four of those stallions were named chefde-race, with Sir Gallahad III Champion Sire in the USA four times and 12 times Leading Broodmare Sire in the same country. Sir Gallahad III’s full-brother Bull Dog was responsible for five times US champion sire Bull Lea, with Bull Dog Champion Sire in the USA in 1943. He also sired champion Occupy broodmare sire of outstanding sire Habitat - as well as Miss Dogwood, the latter being the third dam of legendary breed shaping stallion Mr Prospector.

The latter’s progeny included another outstanding sire in the form of Unbridled, as well as the highly successful Quiet American -who shared his third dam Cequillo with his sire. Fappiano also sired Cryptoclearance, whose grandson Candy Ride is the sire of current boom US stallion Gun Runner, among many others.

This female line has met with plenty of success in South Africa and has also produced the likes of Gr1 Vodacom Durban July winner Hunting Tower (Fort Wood), graded stakes winning half-sisters Mocha Java (National Assembly) and Mochachino (Silvano), triple graded stakes winner Barahin (Gimmethegreenlight),and Crimson King (Dynasty), a close up third in Saturday’s Betway Summer Cup Consolation. The Gr1 Sword Dancer winning Go Deputy, yet another descendant of Plucky Liege, made his mark in South Africa as the sire of Triple Crown winner Abashiri, as well as the likes of Changingoftheguard, Royal Badge, Icy Trail and Flying Ice. The latter has a Bivouac filly on offer at the 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Yet another eye-catching recent South African winner descended in female line from the remarkable Plucky Liege is last week’s devastating debut winner Taegan’s Champ (Gimmethegreenlight). The latter, out of the Var mare Varachino, descends directly in female line from Plucky Liege’s great-great granddaughter Cequillo, dam of former South African sire Kama, who produced Rothman’s July winner Occult, among others, and third dam of outstanding US sire and Gr1 Metropolitan Handicap winner Fappiano (Mr Prospector).

Gimme A Nother went on powerfully under Bryanston Auctioneers-sponsored JP van der Merwe | Credit: JC Photos

SA TRIPLE TIARA IS ON THE RADAR Mike de Kock lauded the Betway Summer Cup on-course ‘energy’ and made it a 1-2 in the R350 000 Betway Gr3 Fillies Mile at Turffontein on Saturday. The race heralded the arrival proper of the smashing Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein Studhomebred Gimme A Nother, who made it three

on the trot as she registered her maiden stakes success. Weaving her way homewards from midfield at the 300m marker, Gimme A Nother (3-1) went on powerfully under Bryanston Auctioneerssponsored JP van der Merwe as she beat bridesmaid stablemate White Pearl (9-4) by 2 lengths in a time of 98,13 secs.

29 NOVEMBER 2023 | 71

v

Sean Tarry’s Let’s Go Now (25-1) looked a potential winner at the 300m, but she faded slightly and was definitely not disgraced, a head back in third. Winning rider JP van der Merwe said that it was a sluggish start and his mount was hard against the bit at the 600m. “She’s quality and the further we go, the better she will get. But I will ride her over 1200m too,” laughed JP van der Merwe, who is enjoying a solid season. Mike de Kock paid an accolade to former Cape champion trainer Joey Ramsden, who gave him the heads up about Mother Russia. “I trained the grandmother, mother and now the daughter – I’m feeling old! But this is an honest hardknocking family. What an honour to train

72 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

horses like this,” added an elated Mike de Kock. The winner is by champion stallion Gimmethegreenlight (More Than Ready) out of the Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein twice Gr1-winning champion homebred Nother Russia (Tiger Ridge), who in turn was the only foal produced by the four-times Gr1-winning champion Mother Russia (Windrush). Jessical Jell mentioned that the mare had been covered recently again by Gimmethegreenlight and thanked Varsfontein Stud. Gimme A Nother has won 3 from 3, with stakes earnings of R337 500. The SA Triple Tiara is now on the radar for Gimme A Nother, although the veteran trainer said he was ‘not convinced’ about the SA Oaks third leg.

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE 74 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

‘Mother Russia is not the first Gr1 winning mare whose legacy continues through just one foal’ Steven and Jessica Jell and the happy lead-in moment on Saturday | Credit: Candiese Lenferna

29 NOVEMBER 2023 | 75

v

One in the eye for those who believe that a female line cannot survive and thrive off just a single line of descent! Gimme A Nother, who took her career to a perfect three from three in Turffontein’s Gr3 Betway Fillies Mile on Saturday, poked a huge hole in that theory. A third generation stakes winner trained by Mike de Kock, the daughter of Gimmethegreenlight is a product of the venerable Mauritzfontein Stud and races in the famous black and yellow silks inherited by current owner Jessica Slack-Jell. It was Jessica’s mother Mary Slack who purchased Gimme A Nother’s grandam Mother Russia from Klawervlei Stud as a dual Gr1 winner of the Fancourt Majorca and Empress Club Stakes. She duly rewarded her new owner with victory in the Gr1 Paddock Stakes and in what was arguably the highlight of her star-studded career, the coveted Gr1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, a memorable occasion given that she thwarted the mighty Pocket Power’s bid of a fourth consecutive victory in the celebrated mile race.

There were high hopes for the champion daughter of Windrush when she retired to her owner’s Wilgerbosdrift paddocks as a four-time Gr1 winner. However, racing and breeding is fraught with incredible highs and the heartbreak that is the flip side, hence it was not just a cruel blow when Mother Russia died at age ten, her innings as a broodmare yielded just a single foal. It looked like her name would quietly fade into obscurity. Not so. Fortunately, that foal, a filly named Nother Russia, is keeping the flame alive. Like her mom before her, she joined the De Kock stable but raced in the colours of Jessica, who had purchased the chestnut from the Wilgerbosdrift draft for R550 000 at the National Yearling Sale. One can speculate as to why Wilgerbosdrift would offer for sale a filly out of a champion racemare, but at the time, Mother Russia was alive and well and looked to have many years of her broodmare life ahead of her. Fate decreed otherwise.

76 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

v

Let’s just say that Jessica’s purchase was money well spent, for Nother Russia proved herself to be very much her mother’s daughter. She stepped into the history books as the first back-to-back winner of the Gr1 Empress Club Stakes, the second of which coming on the back of a superb runner-up effort in the Gr1 Horse Chestnut Stakes, where she pushed Horse of the Year Legal Eagle all the way up the long Turffontein straight and failed by a diminishing neck, achievements which saw her emulate her dam as the recipient of a Champion Older Filly/Mare title. Retired to Mauritzfontein, Nother Russia has to date produced four foals, and considering that three of those are fillies, it would seem that for now, the family fortunes look secure

and should mushroom in years to come. By the way, Mother Russia is not the first Gr1 winning mare whose legacy continues through just one foal. Astute readers will no doubt come up with others, but I’m sure Cape racegoers of an older generation will remember the fine racemare Boland Pride, who counted what is now the Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas amongst her eight victories. An own sister to SA Nursery winner Bold Persian, she too, produced just one foal, the New South Wales filly Country Pride, who never raced, but became the dam of Gr1-placed stakes winner Country Glory and grandam of Gr1 winner Proud Pilgrim.

BIRTHDAY WISHES DO COME TRUE Winning Form’s national log-leading rider Richard Fourie had to wait nine races to celebrate his birthday with a winner. That came in the form of the 4yo Rafeef filly Mrs Browning, who won the R250 000 Joburg Tourism Gr3 Carry On Alice Stakes for another patient man in trainer Sean Tarry. It must be some seasons since Sean Tarry didn’t celebrate a winner on a big day, and Mrs Browning came to the rescue of the multiple champion trainer as she responded to a powerful Fourie ride, and put the cap on a R71 913 Pick 6 payout. Always in the firing line, Mrs Browning (28-10) was unleashed in the final 200m to hold off a late challenge from Coldhardstare (14-1) by 1,25 lengths in a time of 67,24 secs for the 1160m. Ice Star (25-2) finished best of the rest, and was just under a length further back in third. Raced by the Wernars family, Harry Willson and Johnny Peter’s Hyperpaint Syndicate, the winner was bred by Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein. She is a daughter of Redoute’s Choice stallion Rafeef (AUS) out of the Galileo mare Miss Galidora (IRE) – the latter placed at 2000m in the UK! This was Mrs Browning’s first stakes win and she took her tally to 4 wins with 5 places from 11 starts for stakes of R444 750. Tarry continued his luck into the last race when Gavin Lerena steered Jet Dynasty to victory, to put the seal on a tough day at the office. 78 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

Breeze Over gives Muzi Yeni his double for the day | Credit: JC Photos

82 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

v

THAT WAS A BREEZE! Muzi Yeni enjoyed a day to remember at Turffontein on Saturday! A little over a half hour after celebrating victory in the Betway Gr1 Summer Cup, he rode a tactical masterclass aboard Breeze Over in the non black-type R250 000 Racehorse Owners Association Stayers to bring up a feature race winning double he’ll never forget. With the Tony Peter trained Flying Bull joining Mambo Come Tesio on the sidelines, only seven runners jumped away from the 3200m start on their marathon journey. In the early stages, no one was keen to take make the running and top weight Nebraas was seen fighting for his head on the rails coming past the winning post for the first time. Muzi Yeni got the lightly weighted Breeze Over across from his wide draw and eased to the front going into the first turn. With an uncontested lead of about two-lengths over Positive Attitude down the back straight the pace slowed considerably, and Yeni could allow his mount to gather his energy for the last couple of furlongs. Breeze Over lead the field into the home straight and showed a good turn of foot to quicken away from the chasing pack around the 400m mark, and from thereon in was no contest. Breeze Over (5-2) had 3,75 lengths to spare over Positive Attitude (20-1), winning in a time 212,92 secs. In a strung-out race, Flying First Class (33-1) was a further half-length back in third. The first three past the post all carried 50kg, all running under sufferance, interesting times for the handicappers. 29 NOVEMBER 2023 | 83

v

It was a bad result for punters with all of Nebraas, Black Thorn and Arumugam missing out of the placings, helping boost the PA, and resulting in a first Jackpot payout of R4 308-10. Trained by Mike and Adam Azzie, Breeze Over has now won three from fourteen starts for stakes of R415 500 for his connections and

could well pay to follow in staying events later in the Gauteng season. A four-year-old gelding by Twice Over (Observatory) out of the Giant’s Causeway one-time winner Lebombo Breeze, Breeze Over was bred at Drakenstein Stud and was sold for R180 000 at the National Yearling Sales.

PERFECTION! Perfect Witness (Diego De Gouveia) takes it by a neck to beat Star Coin (Kaidan Brewer), Crimson King (Kabelo Matsunyane), and Pyromaniac (Richard Fourie) in a thriller | Credit: Candiese Lenferna

86 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

With stakeholders still reeling from the shock move by the Stipendiary Stewards to withdraw all of the Tony Peter runners from the third race onwards on the Turffontein big day, the R300 000 Betway Summer Cup Consolation produced a thrilling three-corned finish, with Diego De Gouveia extracting a great effort from the trojan mare, Perfect Witness. v

In a double whammy for punters, the withdrawal of the original Tony Peter favourite Street Art saw Pyromaniac start tote favourite, and the Tarry chestnut duly did the dirty by running fourth and consigning thousands of Bipot and PA tickets to the waste dump. While this was the official consolation race, the

only horse eliminated from the big race was River River Romeo, who did the donkey work in a field reduced to 8 runners. In the run for home the pacemaker came under pressure as Pyromaniac unwound down the outside. In the final 50m any one of three could win it, but it was the Candice Dawson-trained Perfect Witness (9-2) who found more to hold off the always prominent Star Coin (25-2) by a neck in a time of 124,46 secs. The 8-1 Crimson King was the villain of the peace as he held Pyromaniac (11-10) out of third by the proverbial nose.

v

The curtain came down on a sizzling hot 2023 BSA November 2yo Sale at the TBA Sales Complex in Johannesburg on Sunday afternoon, with the market holding strong after a recovery in 2022, following a testing 2021. Top price of R1,5 million was paid by Summerveld trainer Michael Roberts at the one-day platform, for a lovely daughter of Vercingetorix. Consigned to the sale by Varsfontein Stud, as Agent, the filly named Ladyofdistinction (Lot 121) had gained further gloss to her pedigree when her brother Gladatorian ran second behind the flying Dyce in the Gr3 New Turf Carriers Merchants, run a day prior to the November Sale. Another daughter of Vercingetorix, the Sandown Stud consigned Warrior Royale (Lot 135) was knocked down to Pound Bloodstock for R900 000, which made the filly out of the well bred Captain Al mare Lady Al, the second top lot sold on Sunday.

92 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

The buyers list was topped by Pound Bloodstock, who signed for eight lots for a total of R2,75 million “This was a quality sale with plenty of options for a variety of tastes and pockets,” said Pound Bloodstock’s Sterling Miller, who also signed the R600 000 chit for lot 68, the top priced colt, an athletic Lancaster Bomber out of the Gr3 Final Fling Stakes/Listed Ladies Mile winner Brave Move (Horse Chestnut), consigned by Sandown Stud. “We bought 8 horses to race for a partnership of Tony Jelinski, Morgan Govender, new man Ryan King, and myself,” added Sterling Miller, confirming that the draft would be aimed at racing as 3yo’s.

v

Maine Chance Farms’ star sire Vercingetorix proved the king of the sales ring, with the champion son of Silvano heading the sires list for the 2023 November Two Year Old Sale. In total, Vercingetorix had five two-year-olds on sale gross R3 170 000, with his lots on Sunday’s sale averaging a very healthy R634 000. Overall, a wide buying bench and an optimistic market saw healthy increases in both the average and median prices, while the total aggregate, despite suffering from a small catalogue than last year, remained on par. The aggregate for the November Two Year Old Sale dropped slightly from R25,2 million in 2022 to R25,045 million this year, with the

number of horses on sale dropping in 2023 to 152 (196 went on sale in 2022). However, both the average and median were up on the 2022 sale, with the average rising from R159 494 to R178 893, while the median jumped from R105 000 to R140 000 in 2023. James Armitage’s Sandown Stud had a magnificent sale, and ended up the Leading Vendor at the auction, selling 12 two-year-olds for R3,89 million. Thus he was not there when the likes of Street Art, Main Defender and Captain Hindsight were tested,” explained Paul Peter. He said that Tony Peter had left Turffontein at 12h30. “He was naturally upset and left the racecourse to meet his legal counsel for an urgent meeting. His phone was on silent as he was being

By the time he went through his calls and messages , it was late and there were no Grooms available either.” The NHA cannot reasonably be expected to respond at this stage, but it could well be that their communication and processes definitely warrant a second look. While horseracing has been in denial for years, it actually matters what stakeholders think – and that includes Joe Public. So where to from here?

The Collingwood Stud-bred Slim Jannie has developed a minor fan following since arriving in the Eastern Cape from KZN as a maiden winner seven months ago. Now a winner of five races from eight starts in the region, the decision to relocate the athletic gelding has been an inspired one on all fronts. Raced by the Adam Kethro Property Trust and Clive Williamson, who was on course to lead the winner in, Slim Jannie was the ham on the sandwich of a treble for the high-riding Hollywoodbets-sponsored Gavin Smith yard as he charged to a thrilling victory in the R175 000 non black-type Glendore Sprint.

The 9-4 raiding favourite Iron Bark was never in the race and ran stone last. The Vet was requested to examine him and nothing obvious was detected. This wasn’t his form and the rigours of travel from KZN to the Western Cape, and then up the Garden Route may have taken the pep out of his step. Bred by Collingwood Stud, Slim Jannie is a son of Pathfork (Distorted Humor) out of the onetime winning Rebel King mare, Good Rebel.

BETWAY SUMMER CUP WINNER GOES TO 119 Royal Victory has had his merit rating raised from 111 to 119 following his success in the Betway Gr1 Summer Cup Handicap run over 2000m on the Turffontein standside course on Saturday 25 November 2023. The Handicappers were of the view that both 2nd placed SAFE PASSAGE and 3rd placed BLESS MY STARS made for suitable line horses, which leaves them unchanged on marks of 117 and 119 respectively. It must be noted that ROYAL VICTORY’s adjustment includes the under-sufferance amount of 3 pounds as this race was benchmarked at 113 = 54kg. The only other increase in ratings was for ZEUS who was also under sufferance and goes up from 111 to 113. The following horses were given drops in ratings. SHOEMAKER was dropped from 112 to 111, ARAGOSTA was dropped from 114 to 112, SECOND BASE and ANFIELDS ROCKET were both dropped by 3 pounds each from 117 to 114 and 120 to 117 respectively, while EAST COAST and LADY OF POWER were both dropped by 2 pounds each from 110 to 108 and 107 to 105 respectively. 102 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

Jonsson Workwear Dingaans (Gr2)

PURPLE PITCHER had his rating adjusted from 112 to 114 after his win in the Jonsson Workwear Gr2 Dingaans over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday. The Handicappers were of the view that PURPLE PITCHER would not have run below the 114 he achieved when winning a Handicap last time out. Accordingly, the Handicappers used his actual achievement of 114 to rate this race. GIMMEANOTHERCHANCE who controlled the pace of this race was deemed to have had the run of the race and was only adjusted to a rating of 112, two pounds below PURPLE PITCHER despite his margin of defeat which mathematically works out to 1 pound. SANDRINGHAM SUMMIT was not considered as a suitable line horse here as the Handicappers felt that he had underperformed after meeting with early interference, which left him with far too much ground to make up in the home straight. The only other horse that was given an increase was THE AFRICA HOUSE, who was increased from 98 to 106, this makes him higher than the

v

105 rated GUY GIBSON who he beat here at level weights. Two horses were given ratings drops of 1 pound each, PURE PREDATOR and FIRE ‘N FLAMES were both dropped from 101 to 100. New Turf Carriers Merchants (Gr3) DYCE saw his merit rating climb from 116 to 130 after he emphatically accounted for his rivals in the New Turf Carriers Gr3 Merchants Handicap over 1160m at Turffontein on Saturday. Here it was 3rd placed DANILO DANILOVITCH who was considered to be the most suitable line horse, leaving him unchanged on a rating of 108. In rating the race this way, MOONSHININGTHROUGH runs to a mark of 101, effectively making her a line horse as well. GLADATORIAN was the only other horse in this event to get a ratings’ increase, he was

raised from 114 to 117. While it was noted that GLADATORIAN was a well beaten runner up, he still managed to beat the line horse by 1.5 lengths and in order to give the rest of the runners in this field a chance of being competitive he had to be adjusted upwards. The following horses were given drops, SWING UPON A STAR was dropped from 106 to 103, DAVE THE KING was dropped from 124 to 122, ULTRA MAGNUS was dropped from 102 to 100 and MERCANTOUR was dropped from 113 to 110. Joburg Tourism Carry On Alice Stakes (Gr3) – Formerly the Magnolia Handicap (Gr3) MRS BROWNING remains unchanged on a rating of 103 after winning the Joburg Tourism Gr3 Carry On Alice Stakes over 1160m at Turffontein. MRS BROWNING herself was considered to be a line horse here and in rating the race this way both COLDSHARDSTARE and ICE STAR run to their official ratings effectively making them line horses as well. Accordingly, their ratings remain unchanged. The only runner to have received a rating’s increase was TROPPO VELOCE who was raised from a rating of 96 to 98. A number of horses were given a rating’s drop, MARIGOLD HOTEL was dropped from 106 to 104, BON VIVANT was dropped to 100 from 103, TIME FO ORCHIDS saw her rating cut from 94 to 90, FLOWERBOMB was dropped marginally from 105 to 104, ON CUE was dropped to 81 from 84, GOOD QUEEN BESS was given a 3 pounds drop to 86 from 89, while both FULL VELOCITY and NO FILTER were both dropped significantly from 101 to 97 and 94 to 88 respectively. Cape Punters Cup (Gr2)

The only other horse to receive a rating’s increase was KING PELLES, who was increased from 93 to 95 which makes him at least equal to GREETING MY MASTER who is also rated 95. No horses received a rating’s drop in this event. City Of Cape Town Sophomore Sprint (Listed) FUTURE VARIETY had his rating adjusted from 94 to 99 after his hard-fought win in the City Of Cape Town Listed Sophomore Sprint over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. Here it was TENANGO who was deemed to be the most suitable line horse and accordingly, his rating remained unchanged on a rating of 94. Narrowly beaten 2nd place finisher, CAPTAIN ARROW was adjusted to 98 from 92 and will be rated 1 pound lower than FUTURE VARIETY. The following horses were given drops, both UNDERWORLD and JERUSALEMA RAIN were given drops of 2 pounds each from 105 to 103 and 109 to 107 respectively, while both MEU CAPITANO and MOJO MAN were given drops from 98 to 95 and 101 to 99 respectively. • Press release by NHA on 28 November 2023

HLUHLUWE was increased to a rating of 111 from 105 after fluently winning the Gr2 Cape Punters Cup over 1600m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth on Sunday 26 November 2023. The consistent ZOOMIE was considered to be the line horses here leaving him unchanged on a rating of 101. 2nd Placed, SNOW PILOT and 3rd Placed GREEN WITH ENVY had their respective ratings increased from 105 to 109 and 101 to 108. This ensures that the pecking order of this field is correct except for QUESTIONING who was deemed to have performed below his victory in the Cape Classic where he easily accounted for SNOW PILOT.

Golden Sixty – one of the greatest! | Credit: HKJC

ANOTHER GOLDEN YEAR? Breaking records seems to come quite easily for Golden Sixty – Hong Kong’s superstar racehorse who has already gone where no other has been before.

The Pride of Hong Kong – Golden Sixty – is the city’s all-time leading earner (HK$147.93 million), only three-straight Hong Kong Horse of the Year (2020/21, 2021/22 & 2022/23) recipient and only nine-time Group 1 winner. Across 29 starts, Golden Sixty has won 25 times, remarkably ranging from 1200m to 2000m, which includes a Four-Year-Old Classic Series sweep in 2020 and two conquests over

Romantic Warrior – recent victor of the G1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m) in Australia. Once again though, Golden Sixty has the chance to rewrite history in the HK$32 million G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Mile (1600m), by doing so after a record number of days between runs – 224 – since his most recent outing on FWD Champions Day last April.

29 NOVEMBER 2023 | 107

v

Glorious Days won the 2013 LONGINES Hong Kong Mile after a 189-day break, the current record, while the next closest since the race was extended from 1400m to a mile in 1999 is Firebreak, who prevailed after 57 days in 2004. Even before 1999, no horse won what was then known as the Hong Kong International Bowl (1400m) – which was first run in 1991 – with more than 100 days between runs. Outside of Glorious Days in 2013, Admire Mars is the only horse since Firebreak to win the LONGINES Hong Kong Mile with 50 or more days between runs. Ahead of his highly anticipated return, Francis Lui’s charge trialled over a mile on the turf at Sha Tin this morning (Tuesday, 28 November) under jockey Vincent Ho, who has been ever-present throughout Golden Sixty’s storied racing career, which features a pair of LONGINES Hong Kong Mile crowns in 2020 and 2021.

“It’s exciting. It’s a privilege to be on Golden Sixty. To have such a connection with an animal like him is very special. It’s hard to explain – I’m proud,” Ho said. The upcoming HK$118 million LONGINES Hong Kong International Races on 10 December at Sha Tin will be Golden Sixty’s fourth in succession but first fresh, after crossing the line third today in 1m 37.15s behind Romantic Warrior and Helene Feeling, respectively. “It looked good. They went slow at the corner and someone jumped a cone, we were at the back and then in the straight I just let him build up slowly and he came along nicely. “I wish the pace was faster but it was good. He knows what I want – if I don’t move he comes back and relaxes but he knows when I just ask him even a little bit for an effort, he gives it to me straight away – I was happy,” Ho said. 108 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

Golden Sixty is five out of five when resuming but he is yet to restart against international competition. An armada of race-fit overseas challengers await, comprising five Japanese runners, led by Namur – last-start winner of the Gr1 Mile Championship (1600m) on 19 November at Kyoto, as well as Soul Rush – second in that race. “It looks challenging, the overseas horses and Hong Kong’s horses. There’s a couple of good ones in there but it’ll be fun. He is always good when he runs fresh. We needed this trial just to let him have a nice blow,” Ho said. Serifos, Danon The Kid and Divina also feature for Japan, while last year’s winner California Spangle shoots for another upset victory and the emerging Beauty Eternal seeks a first toplevel win at his initial attempt. Victory would see Golden Sixty join Good Ba Ba (2007, 2008 & 2009) as the only three-time winners of the race. Ho also rides Senor Toba in the HK$24 million Gr1 LONGINES Hong Kong Vase (2400m) and Straight Arron in the HK$36 million G1 LONGINES Hong Kong Cup (2000m). “Senor Toba ran well last start. Let’s see, the Europeans and Japanese look very strong,” Ho said. The developing Straight Arron claimed the HK$5.35 million Gr2 BOCHK Jockey Club Cup (2000m) last start but is yet to face Romantic Warrior over Sunday week’s trip. “He’s going well. Hopefully we’ll be competitive – it’s a strong field but he is fit and he is ready,” Ho said.

World’s best Equinox strolls away with Japan Cup | Credit: RacingTV

EQUINOX OF 2023 JAPAN CUP Equinox was a class above in this year’s Japan Cup, easily beating a stellar field which included eight Gr1 champions from Japan and abroad.

Billed as a showdown between the brown colt and this year’s Triple Tiara victor Liberty Island, the highest rated horse in the world prevailed while extending his Gr1 winning streak to six, becoming the third horse in JRA history to do so following T. M. Opera O and Lord Kanaola. Following the footsteps of his sire Kitasan Black who won the Japan Cup in 2016, Equinox has marked a milestone with this victory in becoming the first horse ever to exceed 2 billion yen in earnings (JPY 2,215,446,100). The colt has given his trainer Tetsuya Kimura

his seventh JRA-Gr1 title, his latest being with the colt in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) last month, while jockey Christophe Lemaire, who notched the Queen Elizabeth II Cup with Brede Weg two weeks earlier, scored his 49th overall JRA-Gr1 win and is now tied with Yutaka Take in landing four Japan Cup titles (Vodka in 2009, Almond Eye in 2018 and 2020), more than any other jockey so far. The full field of 18 started in front of the packed stands and, as expected, Panthalassa rushed to the front, setting a rapid pace that timed 57.6 seconds in the first 1,000 meters, widening an 29 NOVEMBER 2023 | 109

unmeasurable lead in the backstretch while three-time Gr1 winner Titleholder followed in second and Equinox a length behind in third. By the last corner, Panthalassa had gradually squandered his huge lead but was still about 100 meters ahead of the others in early stretch when the hot favourite unleashed his signature stretch drive. The top-rated horse in the world easily caught Titleholder 400 meters out and then inherited the lead from the used-up pacesetter just before the 200-meter marker to cruise to an incredible four-length victory.

“Equinox was able to come into the race in good condition. He was aggressive from the start and was relaxed during the race despite the fast pace of the frontrunner. With Equinox extending his Gr1 winning streak for over a year, the pressure was so great before the Japan Cup that I felt relieved when he won the race. “He is a very well-balanced horse—shape of his hooves, bone structure and firm muscle— everything is perfectly balanced. It’s a miraculous combination. So, we try to maintain this balance when we train him.” Said Trainer Tetsuya Kimura. Jockey Christophe Lemaire added, “I felt happy and relieved. Many emotions came to my mind because it was an unbelievable race. Horseracing fans and lovers were able to see something very special. He is a top horse and can adapt to any kind of race or surface.

so today was very special. Equinox is easy to ride—he knows his job very well and he doesn’t use too much energy—so riding a horse like him is a pleasure and I felt very privileged to be in the saddle of such a fantastic horse.” Three-year-old Triple Crown filly Liberty Island took a ground-saving trip behind the eventual winner in fourth. Although unable to match the speed of the winner, the second pick did not disappoint, displaying her good turn of foot and pinned Titleholder 250 meters out then Panthalassa 150 meters to the wire for second place. Fifth choice and 2022 Best Three-Year-Old Filly Stars on Earth was settled behind Equinox and right next to Liberty Island most of the way. After entering the stretch side by side, the two fillies rallied briefly in early stretch but while unable to keep up with the eventual runner-up, Stars on Earth closed tenaciously for third while holding off a late charge by Do Deuce. French raider and tenth pick Iresine was a touch late out of the gate, travelled on the rails in mid-pack and showed effort in the stretch but lacked the needed kick, unable to reach contention, to finish ninth. Trainer Jean-Pierre Gauvin after the race stated, “I think Iresine ran a good race. The gate was different from France, so he couldn’t get a good start, and he was unable to run in his usual style because the pace was too fast. “However, Marie and I are satisfied with his performance. I have no regrets about racing him in the Japan Cup, and I’m happy that he was able to finish the race without any problem.”

“I’m very happy with Iresine. He gave his best. The race did not develop in his favor but he tried hard to keep up with the fast pace and strived in the straight. Tokyo Racecourse is “When we came back in front of the huge happy crowd who witnessed the race, I became a wonderful racecourse. Equinox was just spectacular.” Added Jockey Marie Velon. very emotional. As a professional jockey for many years, I work hard to ride to perfection, www.japanracing.jp 110 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

Fastorslow beats Appreciate It and Galopin Des Champs in Gr1 John Durkan | Credit: Racing TV

FASTORSLOW PACKS A PUNCH!

There was a changing of the guard at Punchestown on Sunday as the curiously named Fastorslow defeated Galopin Des Champ in the Gr1 John Durkan Chase. Add to that Bravemansgame’s defeat by Royale Pagaille at Haydock, and this season’s Gold Cup now looks very open. Fastorslow had already rolled the freshly crowned Cheltenham Gold Cup victor Galopin Des Champs last April in the Irish equivalent. Then he started 20-1, but the market didn’t give him much credit for beating Mullins’ star that day, and he was still sent off 9-1 to confirm his superiority when they lined up back at Punchestown. This time Fastorslow was no less clinical. Trainer Martin Brassil was the only opposition 112 | 29 NOVEMBER 2023

to the Willie Mullins quintet in the €100,000 contest and his stable star was a worthy winner. Under jockey JJ Slevin, Fastorslow travelled easily, jumped slickly, and quickened decisively. Always handy just behind the leader Appreciate It, he showed his class to quicken off the slow pace after the last and win a tad cosily by half a length. Appreciate It ran the race of his life in second after making the running. However, this was a performance that confirmed the winner’s credentials as a serious contender for the Gold

v

Cup next March. Brassil’s French import is now a 4-1 shot for Gold Cup glory at Cheltenham, having been as big as 20-1 on Sunday morning. “He needed to back up his run in the Punchestown Gold Cup.” the Grand Nationalwinning trainer stated afterwards. Having gone two years and eight completed starts without defeat, Galopin Des Champs has now twice been humbled and Mullins didn’t disguise his dejection. “I’m just disappointed,” he said. “He didn’t seem to jump early on and the writing was on the wall from there. There was no spark and Paul said he was very dead in himself.” “We’ll go home and see how he is, but we’ll probably stick to what we did last season, when he went to the Dublin Racing Festival

[for the Irish Gold Cup], but I’m not making any decision today.” It was also a day that reinforced concerns as to how much winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup can ‘leave a mark’. For a horse who used to run and jump so supremely, on Sunday that was nowhere to be seen. The Irish Gold Cup is also an option for Fastorslow, but Brassil said the Savills Chase at Christmas could be next. Post-race, the owner of Fastorslow Sean Mulryan revealed how Fastorslow came to be named. “The name was actually a mistake,” he said. “A guy in France asked me to name the horse and I asked him, is the horse fast or slow? And he said, ‘Okay, that’s fine’!”
