Personal Statement
Welcome by Abigail Davies Throughout my life I have always played and thrived in a sporting environment exploring many different sports. Following the 2012 Olympic Games, I was inspired to start rowing and haven’t looked back since, dedicating myself to more than four training sessions per week for the past three years. My local club, Northwich Rowing Club has given me further inspiration as a result of its outstanding coaches who have helped produced rowers of national and international standard including a current GB two time Olympic medallist, and several current GB juniors. I would love to be able to join this illustrious local hall of achievement. From the outset I’ve shown that I have the strength to be an elite rower. After just three months I won a bronze medal at a national indoor rowing competition. I feel I am still on a steep development curve to realise my potential, but in my short career to date I have continued to excel. In September 2014 I was accepted on to the AASE programme which is an Advanced Apprenticeship in Sports Excellence only accessible to athletes that demonstrate early potential to compete at an elite level, this included having to achieve a sub 7:50 2k erg score. In November 2014 I was invited to the GB early ID trails (racing up a year as I will still be eligible for the same age group in 2015), which incorporated a 5k single scull. Despite this only being my third competitive outing in a single I still achieved the same ranking on the water as my ergo ranking against the same field of athletes.

Reference
To whom it may concern I am delighted to be able to provide a personal reference for Abigail Davies as both her coach and club captain at Northwich Rowing Club. Since she began rowing, Abbie has shown a quiet strength and determination to succeed which has been recognised from her performances both on and off the water. As an athlete she can be relied on to be both independent and self-motivated and her approach to training is a fine example to the other members of her squad. In the past twelve months in particular, Abbie has managed the transition to A ‘level studies along with a significant increase in training load to be selected for the Athlete Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme which has led to a number of invaluable training and competitive opportunities. These have included an invitation to the GB Rowing Team Potential Camp plus ongoing land and water assessments. She has also competed at national level in both a single and crew boats including Henley Women’s and National Schools Regattas along with and stroking an eight at the Schools’ Head of the River. The AASE programme means Abbie has taken time to fully understand goal setting for mental, physical, technical and tactical elements of both training and competition. She has demonstrated thorough understanding of what it takes to be a high performance athlete and the importance of both short and long term goal setting. Abbie is a real pleasure to coach and gives constructive feedback to me and also to her crew mates. As a member of a larger squad she is very much respected by her peers not only for her commitment but also because of how she supports them to achieve their own goals. She is a great asset to the club beyond her athletic ability and regularly volunteers for fundraisers and at club events. I am confident in Abbie’s ability to achieve her long term goal of competing as an international oarswoman and take great pleasure in recommending her for your programme. Sincerely Rachel Hooper Northwich Rowing Club Club Captain and Junior Coach
