If I wish to achieve my full potential in skiing the reality is that I will have to now leave the UK. There are a number of reasons for this but underlying them all is the fact that in the UK skiing is very much a fringe minority sport and this has a number of consequences, principle amongst which is that there is little support either financially or institutionally for people like myself. When I talk to Austrians, Swiss and Norwegians at international tournaments I am often struck by how much support and backup they enjoy and I will never forget an Austrian ski coach at a slalom event in Wildschonau who remarked to me after a very competitive run, "That was very good indeed ... for a Brit!" The culture that says it's OK not to beat the Alpine nations because you represent somewhere classified as a 'low country' is something I need to now escape and for me that means continuing my education and skiing career in the USA Although I am a very ambitious skier I am conscious that no matter how hard I train and where, I must never neglect my education. For me this is the great appeal of attending college in the US, the possibility of combining world class coaching and facilities with a world class education. If I stay in the UK I will have to choose one or the other, whereas in the US I will have the opportunity of both. I am under no llusions as to the amount of work and effort involved, but I have always been a very determined person and I am now ready to make the necessary commitment
