Welcome by Darcy Jennings When I started rowing at my school 3 years ago and realised I wasn’t half bad at it, a passion began brewing inside of me. Now, looking back at everything rowing has enabled me to achieve, on and off the water, I feel so privileged to be a part of the community that is rowing. When I picture my future, I see rowing in a great deal of it; at this point in time, I can’t imagine any obstacle deterring my devotion to the sport. That is why I would love to attend an American university and share this passion with a whole squad who feel similarly. The thought of excelling in an environment where everyone is sharing the same pain because they love the same thing seems surreal. Not to mention, the facilities in the US are incomparable to those offered in the UK. I belong in the college athlete environment because I’m hungry to achieve my dreams. I want to keep pushing my boundaries so I can become physically and mentally ruthless as an athlete; after all, rowing is mostly mind games where your biggest opponent is yourself.

Regarding my sporting achievements, I am the Captain of the Senior Girls’ Squad at my school. I have competed in the Boston, Lincolnshire 5k February GB trial where I came 13th out of the 76 JW18 competing in their singles’. This meant I moved up about 40 places compared to where my ergo placed me in the start order. Last season, I spent most of the time competing in a coxed four. In this boat, we won several competitions. The highlights of the season were winning Schools’ Head of the River (JW16 4+) in the winter and achieving a silver medal at National Schools’ Regatta in the summer. To add to this, I also competed in the JW16 GB trial where I came 2nd in my single and 4th in a double meaning I was invited to attend a sculling camp over the Easter holidays. The aim for this year is to get a GB vest and go to an international junior regatta. My ambitions for rowing in the distant future are to row for my country in the Olympics.
