Reference
USA University Athletics reference for Joel Leon Benitez I have known Joel for 5 years in multiple capacities; as his personal coach, head coach for the national team and now as Director of Athletics at Millfield School where he studies and trains. Joel has progressed rapidly in his achievements in the pole vault since he began during the summer of 2012. In the 2013 English Schools Championships he finished 8th however in 2014 he became national champion at the same event, in the process he set a new championship record! During 2015 Joel worked hard to develop his take off and worked with longer poles. His tireless work ethic and drive to succeed saw him rewarded with another 30cm improvement and reach the final of the IAAF World Youth Championships. Joel has shown excellent consistency in all of the competitions this season, competing within fifteen centimetres of his personal best on 6 occasions despite adverse weather conditions at many events. He has also shown great drive, ability and focus by making the final at his first international championship attempt. As well as his pole vault ability Joel is developing his skills in other events demonstrating his ability to be part of a team environment in an individual sport. His long jump and sprint times have improved each season and I would expect to see them improve more significantly in each of the next two summers as his physical development programme increases. Joel has consistently shown a desire to be the best that he can be in all aspects that he undertakes at the track. However he balances his drive to succeed as a senior member of the training squad by supporting, encouraging and advising younger athletes. I believe he would be a credit to any university programme that he attends. I recommend him to you most enthusiastically. Alan Richardson Director of Athletics amr@millfieldschool.com
