Welcome Sport has always been a passion of mine and I enjoy the demands of training alongside the satisfaction of competition.
by Kate Willis
Although I have always been an all rounder at sports, since moving to Cambridge, I have discovered a strong interest as well as an aptitude for rowing. This natural ability had recently been identified by the GB Rowing Start Programme. In October 2014, I visited a number of US college sporting facilities as part of a school PE trip. I was overwhelmed by the excellence of their facilities and their strong emphasis on sporting achievement. I decided then that I would love to be able to have the opportunity to combine my academic aspirations with my wish to row competitively, in an environment which provides the best possible resources to achieve my potential. Despite having only been rowing for a year, I believe that my aptitude, commitment and competitive spirit means that I can progress rapidly. I would be proud to be considered as a college rowing team member.

Reference
To Whom It May Concern: This letter is a personal reference for Kate Willis. I have coached Kate as both a part of Cantabrigian rowing club's junior squad and as a member of Hills Road Sixth Form College's rowing program for the last 6 months. Over that time, Kate has impressed me immensely as a quiet yet driven individual whose approach to both training and racing is an example for anyone. Kate is naturally suited to rowing with both the height and build to progress a significant distance in the sport. I think the simplest way for me to show Kate's physiological potential is to mention her recent selection onto the World Class Start programme nearby in Ely run by British rowing for a trial period. Selection for this is based on both a series of height, weight and arm measurements as well as strength and erg tests. This programme is aimed at taking athletes with raw potential and giving them additional coaching through to national level and ultimately national squad selection. Kate's inclusion is a mark of the raw potential she has as a rower and given her approach to training I have no reason to believe she won't fulfil this potential especially given the advanced coaching she will get within that programme. On the subject of mentality and attitude, Kate has shown a real drive to work on making the most of her natural potential and push herself to fulfil all her clear promise. She has shown good mental strength in both her racing and test ergs and is capable of pushing herself right to the limit. She has committed fully to the rigors of training twice a day around her academic studies and has handled the work load well. She is a pleasure to coach on the water, engaging in coaching and getting on well with her crewmates. She learns quickly and makes changes based on technical feedback rapidly. In the last 6 months she has progressed quickly to a good level in both her sculling and rowing technique. In summary, Kate has been a pleasure to coach over the last 6 months in both her attitude, ability and in the knowledge that she will go on to be a very talented rower in the future who would be a real asset to any programme she attends.
