Kieran Connolly Rowing

United Kingdom

Welcome I started rowing when I was 15. A sport I chose because I was willing to try something new. I had not been given the opportunity to row before moving to England, as previously I lived in Dubai in the Middle East.

by Kieran Connolly

After the first ergo test, I was made aware that I was already better than the rest of my year. This allowed me to push myself to remain the best I could be, allowing me to reach my goal of the 1st 8 by year 11, as well as attending the Team GB potentials camp. At college I have been rowing in the 1st 8 for 2 years, and in the 1st 4 which won a series of events in the winter months. When leaving college and moving to America, my goal will be to reach the top boat of my chosen university, and continue to remain pushing myself harder in order to win more events. - Kieran Connolly

Reference

RE: Kieran Connolly Kieran has shown excellent leadership qualities and these have recently been evidenced when directing a team for the 'Third Form Challenge' and when carrying out his Prefect duties in his boarding house. Kieran has also been appointed as Head of Lower College in his boarding house and the house representative for the anti-bullying committee. He is a kind sort, and, as such, a good role model for the younger co-habitants in his boarding house. Kieran has not found some aspects of learning easy, yet, to his credit he has persevered. This was particularly evidenced in his Design and Technology coursework, where he was very keen to perfect his work and to achieve the best possibly grade. The high A grade he achieved for this only being possible through excellent time management, organisation and a high level of practical ability and dexterity. This not only gaining him full marks in the making element of his Design and Technology work, but also helping him in Biology when setting up experiments. Kieran is proactive in his approach to learning, taking an active role in the classroom to compound his knowledge. He works and communicates extremely well with his peers; he is equally comfortable working in a team and independently. One example of the former being when studying the ethics and methodology issues of a key psychological piece of research by Milgram and his findings into explanations for obedience, as seen in Nazi Germany. Kieran very much lead his team and his confidence was born from his excellent preparation before and the clarity with which he constructs a persuasive argument. He has demonstrated a great ability to write clearly and effectively, using appropriate language, and has created a variety of written reports in the form of full experimental research write ups, literature background reviews, essays and concise short answers. In completing the essay questions and experiments he has shown he can research and critically evaluate texts, interpret graphs and data and ultimately build an informed argument. Further to this he has shown that he is capable of also looking at the same problem from a wide variety of perspectives and can evaluate the merits and limitations of each one. With a keen interest in the Human Anatomy component of the Biology syllabus as well, Sports Psychology would be an excellent area of study. Graham Cutts Head of Sixth Form
