Personal Statement
Smart Photo Welcome by Millie Broom
I am a highly skilled, very tenacious, dedicated and fit field hockey player. What sets me apart is that I am small and agile, quick to surprise and get around the opposition. Although I love to play in attack and score goals, I am flexible and can defend too. I want to come to university in the USA so that I can combine my love of hockey with academic study. I love to challenge myself and I would like nothing better than to immerse myself in the college hockey scene. I play school and club hockey and have made it through the highest levels of tournaments and to England training camp. If that camp is a taste of College hockey then I’m up for it!

26 October 2015 Ref: Millie Broom I have known Millie in a coaching capacity for 3 years, as her Head of Hockey. Millie came to us in the fourth form (a 15 year old) and immediately had an impact on our hockey programme. She impressed immensely within her age group to a level that by the mid season break she had been elevated to the 1st XI squad. Since her elevation Millie has continued to develop and push herself in various aspects of her game and has now established herself as one of our senior players with still another year left in the 1st XI. Millie does have a genuine passion for hockey, as well as being a member of the 1st XI she continues her club hockey outside of school with Cheltenham HC along and has bee regularly involvemed with England hockey’s Single System Pathway where she has in the past 3 years made it to Tier 1 level and was part of the U15 England assessment Training Squad. Millie is also a member of our Talented Athlete Programme (TAP) where she has received exclusive coaching and support for her hockey requirements as an athlete, this has included 121 sessions on the astro, gym work or goal setting. In each instance Millie responds well to the instruction she receives and will work hard in achieving her aims. She is a dedicated athlete who is aware of her strengths and areas she needs to develop. This is very much so the case in terms of her hockey, Millie has a distinct talent for goal scoring. This is how I became aware of her at College as she was regularly scoring multiple goals in matches for her U15 team. What was more noticeable about the goals were in what areas within the D she was scoring from, you would be very confident if a ball was loose in the D that Millie would pounce on it or she would be there to finish off the move. From the moment we brought her up our offence gained some potency as Millie was able to read the game and ensure her movement complimented the passes being made to her. Her size was brought into question but this is an area we have worked upon and Millie has learnt to be more robust in her defence and turns a lot of ball over from defenders carrying the ball but what is more evident is her physicality on the ball. She carries the ball well and with confidence allowing her to play a multitude of passes both forehand and backhand which so why we this season to further develop her she has had a lot of pitch time in the midfield. She is a confident receiver offering passes to her team-mates but also has now develop her link up play. I would thoroughly recommend her as a suitable hockey athlete for your University hockey programme not just on her potential talent on the pitch but an athlete who will work hard on their game and apply themselves both on and off the pitch. Regards Gwyn Williams Head of Hockey
