Personal Statement

Welcome by Portia Davies 2015/16 has been my most exciting and successful Hockey Season: for the first time, both teams that I play for qualified for their respective u18 Indoor and Outdoor UK National Final. In the indoor we made the final, only to be beaten on penalty flicks after a draw at full time; and out of the 250 teams that competed in the out door we finished third, only actually loosing to the eventual winners Repton. This was one place higher than last year, having secured our place in the final 8 for 4 consecutive years. It should be noted our regional qualifiers include teams such as Millfield and Queens Taunton, which are schools that specialise in sport. These results was the culmination of players working together in highly motivated and tightknit teams, with our success founded on diligent preparation, training and a love and passion for the game. At my American University I want to build on this solid foundation and through expert and skilled coaching delivered within first class facilities, develop my game to its full potential. I am excited at the prospect of training and playing with like-minded women and promoting a strong competitive team spirit. Drawing on my experience and back ground, which during this summer includes Captaining our joint hockey and netball tour of Canada, I would like to positively contribute in an encouraging, constructive and supportive manner, so that my team can meet with success and prosper in the wider sporting community.

Reference

Ref: Portia Davies – Sports Scholar and Top Sportswoman Portia Davies is a remarkable and gifted sportswoman. She is an extremely personable and delightful young woman. She has excellent communication skills and is highly motivated; she is exceptionally driven in all that she does. In my capacity as her coach, England Hockey mentor and former International player, I can confirm that Portia is a top sports scholar and she thrives in all areas of the sporting curriculum. Her main passion is hockey and this is obvious from all the school, club, county, regional and national teams she has participated in. Portia is undoubtedly an exceptionally talented hockey player. She currently plays in the Tier 1 England hockey system, which is the equivalent of one level below international hockey. Portia has also played in three national Schools finals in a midfield/inside forward position. The school has just qualified for its four successive national schools final, which is a huge and rare achievement in itself and the teams aim is to go one better than the semi finals, which was achieved last year. Portia has shown dedication and commitment to her sport and this has paved the way to succeeding at county and regional level. Portia is diligent, highly motivated and competitive in her training and match play, always seeking to improve her skills and tactical knowledge of the game. She shows extremely high levels of independence of thought and relishes the challenge of exploration. Portia was an outstanding co-captain of the school U16 hockey squad and led the team to the regional and national finals. She possessed all the necessary qualities of a leader, an excellent motivator. All these competitions prove her desire to succeed, passion for life and incredible sporting skills. Portia was awarded the highest sports scholarship for her year and joined our elite sports programme for the schools top 16 athletes. One of the benefits of this programme is one to one personnel fitness training to improve endurance, agility and core strength, the benefits of which can be seen in her game.
