Sporting Kansas City signed center back Kaveh Rad as a Homegrown Player in April 2021, becoming the 16th player to emerge from the Sporting KC Academy to the first team. He made his MLS debut at Real Salt Lake on May 1, 2021. A native of North Carolina, Rad started 34 of 36 matches for Sporting Kansas City II in the USL Championship in 2019 and 2020. He enjoyed a breakout year for the club in 2019, signing an academy contract and making 22 appearances. Rad started 14 matches for Sporting KC II during a shortened 2020 campaign, leading the team in minutes (1,260) and passes (871) while starting in four of the club’s five wins. Rad and his twin brother Jahon - who is under contract with Sporting KC II - moved from Durham, North Carolina, to Kansas City to join the Sporting KC Academy in 2016. He recorded seven goals and 65 league appearances in the U.S Soccer Development Academy from 2016-2019, representing Sporting at the U-15 through U-19 levels. During his time in the academy, Rad helped lead the Sporting KC U-19s to consecutive appearances at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy Playoffs in 2018 and 2019, including a dramatic run to the quarterfinals in the summer of 2019. Prior to arriving in Kansas City, the Rad brothers competed for North Carolina academy club Capital Area RailHawks Academy.

Sporting Kansas City signed free agent midfielder Oriol “Uri” Rosell ahead of the 2022 season. Rosell returns to Kansas City after helping the club to the 2013 MLS Cup title. The Spanish midfielder played three seasons under Manager Peter Vermes from 2012-2014 before transferring to Portuguese powerhouse Sporting Lisbon. Rosell has spent the last four years in MLS with Orlando City SC, where he logged 73 appearances across all competitions. Born and raised in Puig Reig, Catalonia, Spain, Rosell joined FC Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy as a 14-year-old in 2006 before debuting professionally for FC Barcelona B in January 2012.

Rosell began his first stint at Sporting KC in August 2012, making six MLS appearances during the final stretch of a campaign that saw Vermes’ side win the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and finish atop the Eastern Conference regular season standings. The following year, Rosell started 41 of 42 matches in all competitions, led MLS with 130 interceptions during the regular season and finished as the team’s leader in successful passes and tackles won as Sporting won the 2013 MLS Cup. Rosell was transferred to Sporting Lisbon in Portugal in June 2014 where he earned debuts in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League. He ended the 2014-15 campaign with 22 total appearances as Sporting Lisbon won the prestigious domestic cup title. Over the next three seasons, Rosell was loaned to Portuguese clubs Vitoria Guimaraes, Belenenses and Portimonense, respectively. Rosell signed for Orlando in January 2018 and went on to appear in 70 MLS matches during his four-year stay in Orlando.
