Roger Espinoza played five seasons in Kansas City from 2008-12 before moving abroad to Wigan Athletic FC. After a two-year stint in the English Premier League and English Championship, Espinoza returned to Sporting KC in 2015 and tallied one goal and four MLS assists. His 2015 campaign was cut short due to a left foot injury sustained in early August, but returned to the fold as a regular starter in 2016. Espinoza set new careerhighs in both goals (3) and assists (9) in 2018. Espinoza was an MLS All-Star in 2012 and helped lead the club to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup title that season. He has made 357 appearances for the club in all competitions, tallying 14 goals and 44 assists over 13 seasons. He is both the club’s all-time leader and the all-time MLS leader with 13 red cards. In two years at Wigan Athletic, he logged 57 appearances, including eight in the UEFA Europa League, and started in the club’s 2013 FA Cup Final victory over Manchester City. Espinoza earned 51 caps for the Honduras Men’s National Team after debuting in 2009. He has competed in the 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cups as well as the 2012 Summer Olympics before retiring from international play in 2019.

Sporting Kansas City signed center back Andreu Fontas, a 10-year professional with more than 200 appearances in his native Spain, on Aug. 8, 2018. Fontas underwent Achilles surgery in late 2019, keeping him out for the majority of the 2020 season before making his return with three starts late in the campaign.

Fontas spent five seasons from 2013-2018 with Celta Vigo in Spain’s top-flight La Liga, where he started 100 of 105 league appearances and helped the club to the semifinals of the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League. The defender developed in FC Barcelona’s famed La Masia youth academy alongside current Sporting KC midfielder Uri Rosell, playing nearly 100 matches combined for FC Barcelona B and FC Barcelona from 2008-2012. Fontas advanced through from the B team to the first team in 2009 and played in 16 games for the Spanish giants, including a sub appearance in the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup Final that Barca won 4-0 over Santos. Fontas spent the 2012-13 season on loan at Mallorca before signing with Celta Vigo in June 2013, where he made 139 appearances over five years. Internationally, Fontas has represented Spain at the Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 levels and has also played for the Catalonia National Team.
