LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP DETAILS
The Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup returns for the 2024 season as the tournament’s 109th rendition. Dating back to the 1913-14 season, the Open Cup tournament is the longest-running soccer competition in the United States.
Sporting KC is one of eight Major League Soccer teams that entered at the Round of 32 in a field that features 24 teams from leagues in the lower divisions of American soccer. Open to all professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer, the 2024 U.S. Open Cup will crown a champion in September after eight rounds of singleelimination play and the winner will claim the Dewar Challenge Trophy along with $300,000 in prize money and a berth in the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup.
Sporting KC has won the U.S. Open Cup, named in honor of former Kansas City Wizards owner Lamar Hunt, on four occasions (2004, 2012, 2015, 2017), tied for the most among MLS clubs. Sporting have prevailed in 29 U.S. Open Cup matches since 2012, more than any other team in American soccer, during a run that includes an active 16-match home unbeaten streak in U.S. Open Cup play since the start of 2015.

SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES
SPORTING HEADS TO LAFC FOR U.S. OPEN CUP FINAL
Sporting Kansas City is set to play one of the club’s most monumental matches in recent history when the team heads to the west coast to take on Los Angeles FC at BMO Stadium on Wednesday night in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final.
Sporting advanced to the club’s fifth Open Cup Final following a 2-0 victory over Indy Eleven at Children’s Mercy Park on Tuesday, Aug. 27 and will now visit LAFC as the team looks to become the first team in the MLS-era to win the tournament five times and tie the record held by Maccabi Los Angeles and Bethlehem Steel in the competition’s 109-year history.
Sporting will visit an LAFC team that has spent the 2024 season close to the summit of the Western Conference. Sporting advanced to the final with a 2-1 win in extra time at Union Omaha (USL League One) in the Round of 32, a 4-0 victory over FC Tulsa (USL Championship) in the Round of 16, a 2-1 triumph in extra time against FC Dallas (MLS) in the Quarterfinals and a 2-0 win over Indy Eleven (USL Championship) in the semis.
Sporting has prevailed in 29 U.S. Open Cup matches since 2012, more than any other team in American soccer, during a run that includes an active 16-match home unbeaten streak in U.S. Open Cup play since the start of 2015.
UNDER THE LA LIGHTS
Sporting Kansas City hits the road for a massive match this week, heading to the west coast to face off against Los Angeles FC in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final at BMO Stadium.
Sporting and LAFC have met once already in 2024, facing off early in the season as Sporting earned a point during a 0-0 draw at BMO Stadium on March 9, 2024, limiting a potent LAFC attack to 15 shots on home turf as Tim Melia made six saves in his first shutout of the season.
LAFC has had the better of the series in recent years, with Sporting going 0-4-2 in their last six meetings against the Californians since a 4-1 thrashing on the road on Aug. 4, 2021. Sporting has enjoyed some success at BMO Stadium - a venue not many visitors experience much joy - going 2-3-2 in their seven visits.
Sporting trails the all-time series with LAFC 4-6-2, while Wednesday’s Open Cup final marks the first-ever meeting between the two sides outside of MLS regular-season competition.
HISTORY OF SUCCESS IN FINALS
Sporting Kansas City is preparing for the club’s first cup final in seven years when the team jets off to Los Angeles to take on high-flying LAFC at BMO Stadium on Wednesday night in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final.
Sporting last participated in a cup final back on Sept. 20, 2017 when goals from Latif Blessing and Daniel Salloi earned the club a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls in the 2017 U.S. Open Cup Final at Children’s Mercy Park.
The organization has enjoyed a tremendous amount of success in cup finals throughout club history, winning six of the seven finals the team has participated in - two MLS Cups and four U.S. Open Cups, only suffering defeat in the 2004 MLS Cup against D.C. United.

FIRST FINAL FOR MAJORITY OF ROSTER
As Sporting Kansas City gets set for the club’s first cup final since 2017, remarkably just two players remain from the roster that beat the New York Red Bulls 2-1 at Children’s Mercy Park in the U.S. Open Cup Final on Sept. 20, 2017.
Daniel Salloi scored the game-winning goal that day, putting his side two goals to the good midway through the second half before the Red Bulls pulled a goal back in stoppage time to make the final score 2-1.
Sporting was backstopped by goalkeeper Tim Melia that night, who also guided the team to glory in the 2015 Open Cup Final as he made two saves in the shootout as Sporting claimed the crown on penalties over the Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park.
SPORTING’S MARCH TO THE FINAL
Round of 32: Union Omaha 1-2 Sporting KC
Sporting kicked off the club’s 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup campaign with a visit to regional foes Union Omaha at UNO Caniglia Field on May 8, 2024. After falling behind to Lagos Kunga’s first-half goal, Marinos Tzionis equalized just after the break before Alan Pulido struck a dramatic 120th-minute winner to spare Sporting from penalty kicks.
Round of 16: Sporting KC 4-0 FC Tulsa
It was much more straightforward for Sporting in the Round of 16, cruising beyond USL Championship outfit FC Tulsa at Children’s Mercy Park. Felipe Hernandez bagged a brace on the night to go along with goals from Stephen Afrifa and Tzionis.
Quarterfinal: Sporting KC 2-1 FC Dallas
After enduring a 108-minute weather delay early in the second half, Sporting took the lead through William Agada’s fine finish, only for Petar Musa to bag an unlikely equalizer taking the game to extra time. Dany Rosero headed home the eventual winner in the second half of extra time to keep Sporting’s dreams alive.
Semifinal: Sporting KC 2-0 Indy Eleven
Another weather delay impacted Sporting’s semifinal, as the match kicked off two hours and 32 minutes later than scheduled. Undeterred, Sporting got first-half goals from Johnny Russell and Rosero to propel the squad in the 2024 final.
PULIDO ROUNDING INTO FORM
Sporting Kansas City forward Alan Pulido was back to his best during last Wednesday night’s 4-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids at Children’s Mercy Park, firing home a match-winning brace with goals either side of halftime. Pulido was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for his performance.
Pulido gave the hosts an early lead with Sporting’s second-quickest goal of the season, coming when he rifled into the bottom left corner in the eighth minute. Four minutes into the second half, Pulido doubled his side’s lead with a piece of individual brilliance, wriggling between three Colorado defenders before firing into the corner for his eighth goal of the season in all competitions.
With the brace, Pulido recorded his seventh multi-goal match in the MLS regular season, tying Preki and teammate Johnny Russell for third most in club history, while he also now has five goal contributions in his last five MLS matches.
THOMMY SHINES MIDWEEK
Sporting Kansas City midfielder Erik Thommy struck twice off the bench during the club’s 4-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids at Children’s Mercy Park last Wednesday night.
Thommy replaced Alan Pulido in the 59th minute of the match and went on to fire home his side’s third goal and fourth goals. Thommy’s seven goals in all competitions are third most on the team behind William Agada (11) and Alan Pulido (8). The German was named to the MLS Team of the Matchday for his performance.
With a brace off the bench on Wednesday, Thommy becomes the fifth player in club history – and first in 17 years – to score multiple goals in an MLS regular season match as a substitute. It was also Thommy’s second brace of the season, his first coming in Sporting’s 3-2 loss to Inter Miami CF at Arrowhead Stadium on April 13.

Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes
On the second half…
“We deserved a lot more than we got, a lot more. Forget about the second goal. On the first goal, obviously we have two guys there. One doesn’t go to pressure. The other one doesn’t cover. They both stand back and the guy gets a shot off and scores. Unfortunately, in regards to that goal, that’s happened way too many times. That’s why we’re in the position that we’re in this season.”
On getting ready for the U.S. Open Cup Final…
“They have off tomorrow to clear their heads and get ready for the final because we have got a big challenge in front of us to obviously go play LA in their stadium. It’s going to be a big challenge but we we’ll work towards that on Monday and Tuesday to get ready for Wednesday.”
SPORTING KANSAS CITY QUICK HITS
KINGS OF THE CUP
Sporting Kansas City’s four Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup titles (2004, 2012, 2015, 2017) are tied for the most among MLS clubs and tied for the most among all active teams in the tournament’s 109-year history. Sporting KC will play for a fifth national championship to match the all-time record held by Bethlehem Steel (1915, 1916, 1918, 1919, 1926) and Maccabi Los Angeles (1973, 1975, 1977, 1978, 1981) on Wednesday in LA. Sporting has won three of the last 10 U.S. Open Cup tournaments, most of any team, during a remarkable run that has seen Sporting prevail in a tournament-high 28 U.S. Open Cup matches since 2012.
CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER COACHES
Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes (2009-present) has won three U.S. Open Cup titles, the most among active coaches, and second most in the modern era of the competition (1995-present) behind the late Sigi Schmid (x5). In addition, Vermes’ three assistants – Kerry Zavagnin (2009-present), Zoran Savic (2009-present) and Ash Wallace (2012-present) – have been part of all three of the previous U.S. Open Cup championships (2012, 2015, 2017). Zavagnin, now in his 25th consecutive year with the club, started in the 2004 U.S. Open Cup Final for the then Kansas City Wizards and has been a player or assistant coach for all seven major championships in club history (2000 Supporters’ Shield, 2000 MLS Cup, 2004 U.S. Open Cup, 2012 U.S. Open Cup, 2013 MLS Cup, 2015 U.S. Open Cup and 2017 U.S. Open Cup).
CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER PLAYERS
Three Sporting Kansas City players have previously played in – and won – a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final during their careers. Goalkeeper Tim Melia started in the 2015 and 2017 U.S. Open Cup Finals for Sporting Kansas City, recording seven saves in regulation and two penalty stops against Philadelphia in 2015 and making six saves against New York in 2017. Forward Daniel Salloi -- the club’s all-time leading scorer in the U.S. Open Cup with eight goals -- came off the bench to score the game-winning goal for Sporting Kansas City in the 2017 U.S. Open Cup Final, striking for his third goal of the tournament that year. Similarly, midfielder Memo Rodriguez scored three goals in Houston’s run to the 2018 U.S. Open Cup championship.
WIN ONE FOR THE SKIPPER
Sporting KC captain Johnny Russell, who scored the game-winning goal in this year’s U.S. Open Cup semifinal, is set to play in his first cup final and will be seeking the first trophy of his 18-year professional career. The Scottish winger made his pro debut in May 2007 and has since played in nearly 600 matches for club and country, however Russell has played in only one final of any kind in his professional career: the 2014 Football League Championship playoff final in which Derby County lost 1-0 to Queens Park Rangers despite Russell drawing a red card on QPR midfielder (and now Premier League head coach) Gary O’Neil.
THOMMY BOY LEADS KC TO FINAL
Midfielder Erik Thommy is the only Sporting Kansas City player to start all four matches in the club’s run to the 2024 U.S. Open Cup Final. The German playmaker is coming off a superb cameo against Colorado on Wednesday, scoring twice as a second-half substitute in Sporting’s 4-1 win at Children’s Mercy Park to earn MLS Team of the Matchday honors. Thommy has recorded seven goals and five assists in all competitions this season, giving him 15 goals and 20 assists since debuting for the club – against LAFC – in July 2022.
ROSERO GETS UP FOR THE CUP
Defender Dany Rosero was the only player in this year’s U.S. Open Cup to score in both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds. The Colombian centerback scored the gamewinning goal in the 111th minute of a 2-1 win over FC Dallas on July 10 – heading home a corner from Johnny Russell – then found the back of the net again on Aug. 27 with a headed finish in the 35th minute of Sporting’s 2-0 win over Indy Eleven. Rosero has scored seven goals for Sporting in all competitions since joining the club in early 2023 with all seven coming via headers.
LAMAR’S LEGACY: FOREVER OUR FOUNDER
The U.S. Open Cup was named in Lamar Hunt’s honor 25 years ago this month on Sept. 7, 1999. Kansas City’s original founding owner, Hunt operated the Wizards for over a decade -- from the inaugural 1996 season until selling the team in 2006 – highlighted by the club’s historic 2000 campaign (Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup double) and 2004 U.S. Open Cup championship. Hunt was inducted into the Sporting Legends hall of honor in 2014 and his name is proudly displayed above the championship wall in the northeast corner of Children’s Mercy Park.
SEPTEMBERS TO REMEMBER
Sporting Kansas City will celebrate the anniversaries of the club’s first U.S. Open Cup championship and the team’s most recent U.S. Open Cup championship in the days leading up to the 2024 U.S. Open Cup Final. Friday marks the anniversary of Sporting Kansas City’s 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls in the 2017 U.S. Open Cup Final at Children’s Mercy Park as Tim Melia recorded six saves and Daniel Salloi scored the game-winning goal. Sunday marks the 20-year anniversary of the Kansas City Wizards –led by current assistant coach Kerry Zavagnin -- defeating the Chicago Fire on a golden goal in the 2004 U.S. Open Cup Final at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
FROM FAN FAVORITES TO FOES
Sporting will face two familiar faces in the 2024 U.S. Open Cup Final against an LAFC squad that features a pair of players who won U.S. Open Cup championships in Kansas City. Midfielder Ilie Sanchez began his MLS career with Sporting Kansas City, making 171 appearances for the club across all competitions – including a start in the 2017 U.S. Open Cup Final – during five seasons (2017-2021) in which he was named the team’s Newcomer of the Year (2017) and MVP (2018). Forward Kei Kamara also played five seasons in KC (2009-2013) with 126 appearances for the club, earning team MVP (2010) and Golden Boot (2010, 2011, 2012) honors while also scoring in the 2012 U.S. Open Cup Final.
SHOWDOWN IN TINSELTOWN ROADDRON
Sporting Kansas City is expected to have more than 600 supporters in attendance at BMO Stadium for the 2024 U.S. Open Cup Final through the club’s longstanding tradition of offering complimentary tickets to away matches for Season Ticket Members and supporters group members. For fans not travelling, Sporting Kansas City will host a watch party at No Other Pub in the KC Power & Light District. Doors will open at 9 p.m. CT and the initial 50 fans in attendance will receive their first drink on the club with food/ drink specials available throughout the event as well as a raffle for premium giveaways.

KC AND CHILDREN’S MERCY KANSAS CITY CONTINUE TO IMPACT LOCAL COMMUNITY
A leading independent children’s health organization dedicated to holistic care, translational research, educating caregivers and breakthrough innovation to create a world of well-being for all children, Children’s Mercy Kansas City began a 10-year partnership with Sporting KC in 2016. Children’s Mercy provides the highest level of care for children from birth through the age of 21. U.S. News & World Report has repeatedly ranked Children’s Mercy as one of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals.”
The comprehensive partnership between Sporting KC and Children’s Mercy Kansas City – which includes naming rights to Sporting KC’s world-class stadium, Children’s Mercy Park, as well as the Sporting KC II and Sporting KC Academy complex at Swope Soccer Village – is also at the forefront of Sporting’s state-of-the-art training ground at Compass Minerals National Performance Center. In a first-of-its-kind collaboration between a professional sports team, a national sports federation and a sports medicine provider, the facility opened in 2018 and features the Children’s Mercy Sports Medicine Center alongside Sporting Kansas City and U.S. Soccer.
Children’s Mercy Kansas City is also the official health care and sports medicine provider for the Sporting Kansas City Academy and Compass Minerals National Performance Center as part of a multi-faceted partnership that focuses on the following three components to impact the local community:
1. Strengthening community
• The partnership directly supports The Victory Project, Sporting’s foundation to help children - including those with cancer and disabilities – through all of life’s challenges.
• Sporting KC players and staff engage with, encourage and inspire Children’s Mercy patients throughout the year during hospital visits and special events.
• FLEET, an innovative team of remote experience robots operated via an iPad, regularly attends Sporting KC home matches to provide an all-access interactive experience for patients at Children’s Mercy. Manufactured by Double Robotics, the robot allows users to enjoy two-way live audio and video captured from a 150-degree wide-angle lens while navigating to control their own VIP behind-the-scenes journey.
• Launched in 2018, the RED CARD campaign addresses one of the most significant social issues impacting children nationwide by empowering youth and adults to prevent and intervene in bullying. Through school assemblies and community-wide messaging, the RED CARD initiative aims to reach children, parents, teachers and coaches who have daily opportunities to create supportive environments and stop bullying in its tracks. In 2023 and 2024, Sporting and Children’s Mercy teamed up to provide 90 students at 30 local elementary and middle schools with SKC jerseys on National Random Acts of Kindness Day as part of a Kindness In The Schools (K.I.T.S.) initiative.
2. Improving access to pediatric-trained sports medicine
• The Children’s Mercy Sports Medicine Center at Village West is located inside Compass Minerals National Performance Center and offers a full range of sports medicine services, resources and programming for youth athletes. More than two million high-school athletes and 3.5 million children under age 14 are injured each year in the U.S. playing sports. Only a small percentage are treated by pediatric-trained sports medicine specialists who truly understand the youth’s growing body, developing brain and unique psychosocial stressors.
3. Protecting youth athletes and educating parents and coaches
• The partnership provides athletic training, rehabilitation and conditioning programs for the Sporting KC Academy’s six teams at Swope Soccer Village, which hosts Sporting KC II home matches as well as year-round athletic leagues, tournaments and other marquee events.
Peter Vermes is in his 16th season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2024 and is the longest-tenured active head coach in MLS. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 251 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won four major trophies – the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regularseason standings in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Western Conference in 2018 and 2020. His three U.S. Open Cup championships are the third most in Open Cup history. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to eight straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 203 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank third most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions.
On August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd MLS regular-season game with Sporting KC, becoming the league’s all-time leader in games coached for one club. He was named the first-ever MLS Sporting Executive of the Year by his peers in 2018. Vermes has coached 597 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.
With over 15 years of service at Sporting KC, Vermes is one of the longest serving managers in world soccer. Among all leagues with an average attendance of 10,000+, Vermes ranks second, only behind Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim’s Frank Schmidt (Sept. 17, 2007 – present). Among the top 126 leagues in the world as denoted by the CIES Football Observatory in March 2022, Vermes’ tenure at ranks as the fifth longest active run.
Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, Sporting Kansas City II (MLS NEXT Pro) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.
Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.
Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueres of the Spanish Second Division.
For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final.
Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful season of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
PETER VERMES HEAD COACHING RECORD AT SPORTING KC
ASSISTANT COACH | KERRY ZAVAGNIN
Kerry Zavagnin currently holds the MLS record as he enters his 25th season with one club as a player or coach. Zavagnin first joined Kansas City in 2000 as a holding midfielder and was an integral part of the club’s midfield for the next nine seasons, during which time he helped lead the Wizards to MLS Cup (2000) and U.S. Open Cup (2004) Championships. He was named to the MLS All-Star team and the Best XI in 2004. Zavagnin’s primary duties as an assistant include scouting, developing Sporting Kansas City’s younger players, breaking down film and assisting with training sessions. He started his professional career with the MetroStars, where he played in 39 games over two seasons. After spending one season with the Lehigh Valley Steam (USL-1), Zavagnin came to KC in 2000. He played 237 games and logged 20,516 minutes for Kansas City, setting team records in both categories before being overtaken by Matt Besler early in 2018. He scored eight goals and added 22 assists in his nine seasons in KC. Zavagnin was named Team Defender of the Year in 2001. On top of his club success in Kansas City, Zavagnin also appeared 21 times for the U.S. Men’s National Team. He recorded one assist for the U.S., who went 15-2-4 when Zavagnin featured.
ASSISTANT COACH | ZORAN SAVIC
Zoran Savic joined Sporting Kansas City late in the 2009 season after a 30-year career at all levels of the game in the United States. A native of Gornji Milanovac, Yugoslavia, Savic began his journey through American soccer with the Buffalo Stallions of the Major Indoor Soccer League in 1980. Savic would go on to star for several MISL teams, with his most prosperous period coming with the Kansas City Comets, with whom he scored 70 goals in just over 100 appearances from 1982-1984. After retiring as a player in 1991, Savic turned his attention to coaching in the indoor game. Savic led the Kansas City Attack from 1992-1996, winning Coach of the Year honors for the 1994-1995 season while also serving as the team’s General Manager. Savic later coached the Kansas City Comets from 2000-2005. In 2007 Savic switched to the outdoor game, joining Chivas USA as an assistant to then-head coach Preki before moving into the commentary booth for Kansas City matches in 2008 and 2009. Savic’s career as a commentator was cut short, however, when newly installed Manager Peter Vermes tabbed Savic to be part of his coaching staff late in the 2009 season.
ASSISTANT COACH | ASH WALLACE
Ash Wallace has served on Sporting Kansas City’s technical staff since 2012, aiding the first team coaching staff in a variety of roles. Wallace, originally from England, helps scout and develop game plans for upcoming opponents, assists in planning and executing training sessions and provides valuable analysis for coaches and players regarding strategy. Wallace holds a U.S. Soccer A License. Wallace’s first involvement with the club came in August 2012 when he was contracted to produce a detailed scouting report on Seattle Sounders FC ahead of the U.S. Open Cup Final, helping Sporting claim their first of four major titles during a trophy-laden decade. Prior to joining Sporting KC, Wallace was a member of the Preston North End coaching staff and also served as an opposition scout for Fleetwood Town in his native England. Earlier in his career, he worked with Preston North End’s women’s academy teams and Penwortham Boys academy teams while earning a Degree in Sports Coaching from the University of Central Lancashire.
GOALKEEPER COACH | ALEC DUFTY
Alec Dufty is in his ninth season with Sporting Kansas City having been introduced to the organization as the Sporting KC II goalkeeper coach in the side’s inaugural season in 2016. In his first season working with the Sporting KC first team, starting goalkeeper Tim Melia enjoyed a recordbreaking season where he was named the 2017 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. A former MLS player, Dufty began his playing career with the New York Red Bulls in 2009, making one appearance before joining the MLS reserve goalkeeper pool. In 2010, Dufty joined USSF D2 Pro League side AC St. Louis, making 30 appearances before returning to MLS with the Chicago Fire in late 2010. He announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 2011 season. Dufty then took to coaching, first working with Florida Gulf Coast University and then the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2015, Dufty served as goalkeeper coach for Toronto FC II in their inaugural USL Championship season.
Joey Harty was named Sporting Kansas City’s Director of Sports Performance and Science ahead of the 2020 season, stepping up from his role as assistant fitness coach which he held from 2018-2019. Harty manages all aspects of the club’s performance department from the academy to the senior team. He oversees day-to-day training plans on and off the field, including work in the weight room, soccer session planning, onfield movement training, data analysis and more, aiming to optimize player health and performance. Harty joined Sporting’s organization in January 2016, serving as a fitness coach for the Sporting Kansas City Academy before spending the 2017 season as head fitness coach for Sporting KC II. The Colorado native then transitioned to assistant fitness coach for Sporting’s first team in January 2018 before landing his current role with the club. Prior to arriving in Kansas City, Harty worked for Phoenix Rising FC and Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. Harty attended Grand Canyon from 2010-2014, played for the men’s soccer team from 2010-2012 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science. In addition to holding several professional licenses and certifications in athletic performance, Harty is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
