2025 CONCACAF CHAMPIONS CUP RUNDOWN
HISTORY
The Concacaf Champions Cup is the premier men’s continental tournament, which crowns the club champion of the region and provides the sole qualification route to the new and expanded FIFA Club World Cup and the inaugural edition of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup.
Since 1962, when the first iteration of the tournament was formed, there have been 30 different winners of the Concacaf Champions Cup, from Mexican club CF Pachuca in 2024, back through a list of major clubs from Central America, North America, and the Caribbean.
FORMAT
The Concacaf Champions Cup is played in a direct elimination knockout stage format and is composed of five rounds: Round One, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Final.
The first four stages each include home and away aggregate scoring, while the Final, where the region’s Champion will be crowned, is played as a single-leg match.
Of the 27 clubs that will participate, 22 begin play in Round One and five receive a bye to the Round of 16. The qualification process for the clubs is divided per region.
DRAW & SCHEDULE
Concacaf conducted the official draw for the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup on December 10, 2024. Sporting KC was drawn against fellow MLS side Inter Miami CF in Round One, with the first leg taking place at Children’s Mercy Park on Feb. 19 and the second and decisive leg being played at Chase Stadium on Feb. 25.
• Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. CT: Sporting 0-1 Inter Miami (Children’s Mercy Park)
• Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. CT: Sporting at Inter Miami (Chase Stadium)
The winner of the Round One matchup will advance to the Round of 16 where they will face Jamaican club and Concacaf Caribbean Cup champions Cavalier FC.
SKC IN CCC

Sporting’s semifinal appearances in 2002 and 2019 mark the club’s best-ever finish in the competition - falling to Mexican sides on each occasion: Monarcas Morelia in 2002 and CF Monterrey in 2019.
Sporting qualified for the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup as last year ’s U.S. Open Cup Finalists. The spot is typically awarded to the U.S. Open Cup champions, but since LAFC had already qualified for the tournament via their finish in Leagues Cup, Sporting qualified as the next best team in the Open Cup.
SPORTING KANSAS CITY NEWS AND NOTES
FOCUS BACK ON CHAMPIONS CUP
Sporting Kansas City will shift focus back to the Concacaf Champions Cup when the team takes on Inter Miami in the second leg of the club’s Round One matchup at Chase Stadium on Tuesday night.
Sporting have begun the 2025 campaign with a pair of narrow 1-0 losses - first against Inter Miami in the first leg last Wednesday at Children’s Mercy Park before taking another slender loss in the club’s MLS opener on the road at Austin FC at Q2 Stadium on Saturday night.
Sporting is participating in the Concacaf Champions Cup for the seventh time in club history and first time since advancing to the semifinals of the 2019 tournament. Sporting’s best finishes in an international competition came in 2002 and 2019 when the club reached the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup.
Sporting has a 5-11-4 road record in international competitions, while SKC owns a 1520-10 record in 45 international matches all-time. Sporting has a 12-11-6 record in the Concacaf Champions Cup, including a 6-8-4 record away from home.
DECISIVE SECOND LEG WITH MIAMI LOOMS
Sporting Kansas City will look to shock hosts Inter Miami CF in the second and decisive leg of the two teams’ Round One Concacaf Champions Cup clash this Tuesday night at Chase Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
Inter Miami claimed a tense 1-0 victory in frigid conditions at Children’s Mercy Park last Wednesday in the first leg and Sporting will be looking to overturn that deficit on Tuesday night in the aggregate-scoring affair, with away goals serving as a tie-breaker.
Sporting and Miami have met twice in MLS play - with Miami claiming narrow 3-2 victories on each occasion. Sporting first visited Chase Stadium on Sept. 9, 2023 in MLS regular-season play and took the lead through Daniel Salloi only for Miami to score three unanswered goals to take a commanding lead before Alan Pulido struck a late consolation.
The two sides met again in a monumental occasion on April 13, 2024 as Sporting hosted Miami at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium and a crowd of more than 72,000 witnessed a pulsating encounter, with Erik Thommy scoring twice for Sporting while Diego Gomez, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez tallied for the hosts.
SPORTING ANNOUNCES ROSTER COMPOSITION
Sporting Kansas City announced last Friday the composition of the club’s roster for the 2025 MLS season, with information on the designations for Sporting KC’s senior and supplemental roster, international roster spots, Designated Players and U22 Initiative Players as of Feb. 21.
Entering the 2025 MLS campaign, Sporting has 25 rostered players and five open roster slots. The club has filled 18 of 20 spots on its Senior Roster and seven of 10 spots on its Supplemental Roster.
Sporting currently has six players occupying international roster slots: William Agada, Zorhan Bassong, Joaquin Fernandez, Manu Garcia, Dejan Joveljic and Shapi Suleymanov. Tim Leibold has received his green card and no longer occupies an international slot. The club has one open international spot available.
Sporting’s current Designated Players are Garcia and Joveljic. The club’s U22 Initiative Players are Ndenbe and Voloder.
In addition, Sporting has selected the U22 Initiative Player Model entering 2025. This roster construction model allows the club to assemble a roster that includes up to two Designated Players and up to four U22 Initiative Players while also receiving up to an additional $2 million of General Allocation Money (GAM).
SHAPI MAKES SKC DEBUT, THREE OTHERS EARN MLS DEBUTS
During Sporting Kansas City’s 1-0 loss to Austin FC at Q2 Stadium on Saturday night, four Sporting players made their MLS debuts for the club - including a debut in Sporting Blue for winger Shapi Suleymanov.
After not appearing during Wednesday night’s season-opening match with Inter Miami in the Concacaf Champions Cup, Shapi played the final six minutes on Saturday after replacing Erik Thommy on the right wing.
Fellow offseason arrivals Jacob Bartlett, Manu Garcia and Dejan Joveljic - who all made their club debuts in the Concacaf Champions Cup last week - each earned their MLS debuts for Sporting on Saturday as Bartlett started and played the opening 45 minutes in central midfield while Garcia and Joveljic came off the bench as a tandem during the halftime interval.
ESPINOZA JOINS TECHNICAL STAFF
Longtime Sporting Kansas City midfielder Roger Espinoza has joined the club’s technical staff as a Professional Development Coach and first team assistant coach ahead of the 2025 season. Espinoza, 38, steps into professional coaching after retiring as a player last summer.
In his new role, Espinoza will serve as an assistant coach for Sporting KC while also working with players on all three levels of the club’s professional player pathway - the first team, Sporting KC II and the Sporting KC Academy.
Espinoza joins Manager Peter Vermes, assistant Kerry Zavagnin, assistant Ash Wallace and goalkeeper coach Alec Dufty on Sporting’s first team coaching staff. In addition, the former MLS All-Star and World Cup veteran will play a leading role in the development of young players at the MLS, MLS NEXT Pro and Academy levels through individual training programs and ongoing mentorship off the field.
SPORTING WAIVES ALENIS VARGAS
Sporting Kansas City announced last Friday that the club has waived forward Alenis Vargas.
Vargas, 21, signed for Sporting ahead of the 2024 season after spending the 2023 campaign with Sporting KC II, where he had six goals and seven assists at the MLS NEXT Pro level. In his debut MLS season last year, the Honduran winger had two goals and one assist in 20 league appearances.
Sporting’s roster now stands at 25 players as the team began MLS action this past weekend with a 1-0 setback against Austin FC at Q2 Stadium on Saturday night.
“ONE KC” PRIMARY JERSEY UNVEILED
On Feb. 14, Sporting Kansas City unveiled the club’s new primary jersey for the 2025 and 2026 seasons featuring a progressive take on a classic look as the Sporting Blue kit proudly displays the club’s signature hoop stripes with each Dark Indigo stripe intricately composed of a repeating state line pattern.
The “One KC” kit celebrates the deep connection between club, city and community with a design that showcases two powerful symbols: the beloved hoops that have become an unmistakable hallmark of Sporting KC as well as the state border that defines the region’s unique identity.
Compass Minerals debuted as Sporting’s official jersey front partner in 2022 and the company’s logo is prominently displayed on the front of Sporting’s primary and secondary kits through a First Team partnership as the club’s official plant nutrition and salt provider.

Sporting KC Manager Peter Vermes
Thoughts on the match… “It’s an opening match at somebody else’s place. I thought they obviously had more of the ball. We could have scored one in the first half and they could have scored one in the second half. It was a similar play. Willy (Agada) had his and they had one. The game was one in which they had more of the ball for the most part. We suffered a little bit defensively just because we kept defending and defending, which is what you have got to do sometimes in situations like that. I thought that, in a lot of situations, we were very good for the majority of them. Unfortunately, we give away a set piece with a corner. We probably could have done something else in that situation. You always have got to limit as many set pieces as you can against you, whether it be corners, wide free kicks, free kicks in and around your box. You’re trying to limit the amount that you give and unfortunately we did on that situation and we lose the game based on a set piece. We have a long way to go and we have got a lot to build off of.”
On the play from the newcomers…
“It’s going to take some time. We have to get all those guys together. They have to get 90 minutes fit. The reason why all those guys didn’t play is because they’re not there yet. And right now we have got to try to keep increasing their minutes each game. And it’s a little bit of a strategy and sometimes you’re kind of forced into what you’re doing with those guys in regards to when they play and how much they play. Do you start them in the second half? Do you start them in the first half? What do you do? You can see at times there are really good things there, but we need time and unfortunately we just started the season and now we have got to find that time as we go into each game.”

Children’s Mercy provides the highest level of care for children from birth through the age of 21. U.S. News & World Report has repeatedly ranked Children’s Mercy as one of “America’s Best Children’s Hospitals.”
The comprehensive partnership between Sporting KC and Children’s Mercy Kansas City – which includes naming rights to Sporting KC’s world-class stadium, Children’s Mercy Park, as well as the Sporting KC II and Sporting KC Academy complex at Swope Soccer Village – is also at the forefront of Sporting’s state-of-the-art training ground at Compass Minerals National Performance Center. In a first-of-its-kind collaboration between a professional sports team, a national sports federation and a sports medicine provider, the facility opened in 2018 and features the Children’s Mercy Sports Medicine Center alongside Sporting Kansas City and U.S. Soccer.
Children’s Mercy Kansas City is also the official health care and sports medicine provider for the Sporting Kansas City Academy and Compass Minerals National Performance Center as part of a multi-faceted partnership that focuses on the following three components to impact the local community:
1. Strengthening community
• The partnership directly supports The Victory Project, Sporting’s foundation to help children - including those with cancer and disabilities – through all of life’s challenges.
• Sporting KC players and staff engage with, encourage and inspire Children’s Mercy patients throughout the year during hospital visits and special events.
• FLEET, an innovative team of remote experience robots operated via an iPad, regularly attends Sporting KC home matches to provide an all-access interactive experience for patients at Children’s Mercy. Manufactured by Double Robotics, the robot allows users to enjoy two-way live audio and video captured from a 150-degree wide-angle lens while navigating to control their own VIP behind-the-scenes journey.
• Launched in 2018, the RED CARD campaign addresses one of the most significant social issues impacting children nationwide by empowering youth and adults to prevent and intervene in bullying. Through school assemblies and community-wide messaging, the RED CARD initiative aims to reach children, parents, teachers and coaches who have daily opportunities to create supportive environments and stop bullying in its tracks. In 2023 and 2024, Sporting and Children’s Mercy teamed up to provide 90 students at 30 local elementary and middle schools with SKC jerseys on National Random Acts of Kindness Day as part of a Kindness In The Schools (K.I.T.S.) initiative.
2. Improving access to pediatric-trained sports medicine
• The Children’s Mercy Sports Medicine Center at Village West is located inside Compass Minerals National Performance Center and offers a full range of sports medicine services, resources and programming for youth athletes. More than two million high-school athletes and 3.5 million children under age 14 are injured each year in the U.S. playing sports. Only a small percentage are treated by pediatric-trained sports medicine specialists who truly understand the youth’s growing body, developing brain and unique psychosocial stressors.
3. Protecting youth athletes and educating parents and coaches
• The partnership provides athletic training, rehabilitation and conditioning programs for the Sporting KC Academy’s six teams at Swope Soccer Village, which hosts Sporting KC II home matches as well as year-round athletic leagues, tournaments and other marquee events.

MANAGER | PETER VERMES
Peter Vermes is in his 17th season as Sporting Kansas City Manager in 2025 and is the longest-tenured active head coach in MLS. He is the team’s longest-serving manager and his 251 coaching victories in all competitions are the most club history. During his tenure, he has won four major trophies – the 2012, 2015 and 2017 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups and the 2013 MLS Cup championship – and finished atop the Eastern Conference regularseason standings in 2011 and 2012, as well as the Western Conference in 2018 and 2020. His three U.S. Open Cup championships are the third most in Open Cup history. He is the first coach in club history to lead Sporting KC to eight straight postseason appearances, as well as the only person to ever win the MLS Cup as both a player and a coach with the same team. His 203 regular-season wins top the club’s all-time chart and rank third most in MLS history. He passed his former coach Bob Gansler as the winningest manager in team history with a 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Aug. 12, 2015, his 109th victory in all competitions.
On August 4, 2018, Vermes coached his 302nd MLS regular-season game with Sporting KC, becoming the league’s all-time leader in games coached for one club. He was named the first-ever MLS Sporting Executive of the Year by his peers in 2018. Vermes has coached 603 total games during his Kansas City coaching career, most in club history.
With over 16 years of service at Sporting KC, Vermes is one of the longest serving managers in world soccer. Among all leagues with an average attendance of 10,000+, Vermes ranks second, only behind Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim’s Frank Schmidt (Sept. 17, 2007 – present). Among the top 126 leagues in the world as denoted by the CIES Football Observatory, Vermes’ tenure ranks as the fifth longest active run.
Vermes oversees all soccer operations for Sporting KC, including the active roster, Sporting Kansas City II (MLS NEXT Pro) and the Sporting KC Academy. Vermes entered MLS ahead of its inaugural season in 1996 and retired from the league in 2002, closing out his playing career in Kansas City after stints with the New York/New Jersey MetroStars and Colorado Rapids.
Following a standout high school career in which he was named New Jersey Player of the Year, Vermes was a star forward and All-American at Rutgers University. After college, Vermes represented the United States in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea, and was named 1988 Chevrolet U.S. Male Soccer Athlete of the Year for his efforts.
Vermes was an integral part of a young U.S. team at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, where he nearly scored against the host Azzurri. It was the first time the U.S. had qualified for the World Cup in 40 years and set the stage for the progress of the U.S. National Team. In 1989 and 1990, Vermes became the first American to play in the Hungarian and Dutch First Divisions, playing for Raba ETO and FC Volendam, respectively. He later spent five years with Figueres of the Spanish Second Division.
For MLS’s inaugural season in 1996, Vermes served as captain of the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 1997, he was traded to the Colorado Rapids for current Sporting KC Assistant Coach Kerry Zavagnin and played in Denver through the 1999 season, leading the Rapids to the 1997 MLS Cup Final.
Vermes joined Kansas City in 2000 for what would be the most successful season of his MLS career. During his first year in Kansas City, he anchored one of the best defenses in league history and won MLS Defender of the Year honors in helping lead the Wizards to the 2000 MLS Cup Championship. He retired in 2002 after appearing in 209 MLS matches (including playoffs) and playing more than 18,000 minutes. In 2013, Vermes was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
